-The Scorpions “Forever And A Day” Comes To DVD, Blu-Ray, And Digital Platforms On November 27th

Scorpions – “Forever And A Day” Trailer

The new fully-authorized Scorpions documentary “Forever And A Day” is wrapping up its theatrical run and will come to DVD, Blu-ray, and digital platforms on November 27th (in German with English subtitles). The movie takes a look at the German hard rock legends’ long career, while focusing on the band’s Final Sting trek, which initially was intended to be a farewell tour.

As the film shows, during the 2011-2012 tour, the band members were so energized by the response from fans that they decided to scrap their retirement plans. Founding Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenker says that if you watch “Forever And A Day,” you can see the veteran rockers come to the realization that they weren’t ready to call it quits.

Schenker explains, “Seeing all these old fans, the new fans coming, everything was sold out, and getting told by the fans what the music means for them, then we more and more” understood that the time wasn’t right for the band to retire.

Among the interesting career highlights covered in the movie is The Scorpions’ historic 1991 visit to the Kremlin in Moscow to meet Mikhail Gorbachev. The band presented the then-Soviet president with a gold record for its hit ballad “Wind Of Change,” which celebrated the end of the Cold War.

Describing “Wind Of Change” as “the soundtrack of the most peaceful revolution on Earth,” Schenker says The Scorpions’ visit with Gorbachev was “something very special” since they were the first, and possibly the only, Western band ever invited to the Kremlin. He adds that The Scorpions are still friendly with Gorbachev, who makes an appearance in “Forever And A Day” commenting about the group and the impact of “Wind Of Change.”

The Scorpions recently wrapped up the 2015 US leg of its 50th anniversary tour, which also is in support of their latest studio album, RETURN TO FOREVER. With regard to the band’s future, longtime Scorpions guitarist Matthias Jabs says, “It doesn’t look like the end is near. You know, we keep ourselves open now. We tried the farewell tour, and we [called] it afterwards the ‘went well’ tour.”

The Scorpions will finish the year with a series of European dates in November and December, with more to come in February and March of 2016, including a run of shows in their homeland. Jabs says the band also plans to play more US shows in May, and may visit South America and China as well. Check http://www.The-Scorpions.com/ for the group’s confirmed itinerary.

-Zierler’s ESC Out Now!

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — Multinational prog metal conglomerate Zierler, featuring members of Beyond Twilight, Halford, Firewind, Scar Symmetry, and Circus Maximus have their debut album, ESC out now via Vanity Music Group.

Two years in the making, ESC is Finn Zierler’s first new album in a decade and is his most mature as well as his most daring musical work to date. Drawing from a wide array of influences that bring to mind everything from the unabashed pomp of Queen and the madness of Devin Townsend, to the virtuosity of Dream Theater and the eclectic stylings of Danny Elfman, Finn and company masterfully walk the fine line between genius and insanity, combining a powerful, multi-layered progressive metal foundation with an often dark, majestic orchestral feel. A musical as well as a personal tour-de-force that took the better part of two years to finally complete.

“I set different goals for myself in making this new album. I wanted to accomplish doing album that was 100% uncompromising in every way. I wanted to break through new creative areas. And I wanted to show compositions, structures, and techniques that no one has ever heard or seen before,” reflects Finn on the making of ESC.

“This is by far the most time-consuming, complex, and detail-oriented album I’ve ever worked on. I took the time necessary to record this beast out of respect for the players, the compositions, and the music itself. I put a lot of emphasis on not taking the easy way out, not using technology to do edits to save time or whatever. The musicians involved are all so talented — there’s no cheating, no copy/paste anywhere. Everything on the album is recorded as organically as possible. Personally, I’m sick of listening to ‘plastic’ albums that sound more like machines than humans!”

Joining Finn in his latest venture are Swedish guitarist Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry, Kaipa), the first to come aboard, and Norwegian bassist/vocalist Truls Haugen (Insense, Circus Maximus), on the Scandinavian side. Finn also reached out to Texas drum veteran, Bobby Jarzombek, whose resume includes the likes of Fates Warning, Halford, Riot, and Spastic Ink. ESC also marks the return of another Texan, vocal powerhouse Kelly Sundown Carpenter, who sang on Beyond Twilight’s 2005 album, SECTION X, and was last seen with Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Gus G’s band, Firewind, as well as Darkology.

The album, featuring a 28-page booklet, can be ordered online at Vanity Music Group’s store.

1. A New Beginning
2. Aggrezzor
3. Darkness Delight
4. Dark To The Bone

Hesperia | Studio Report

As previously mentioned the recording of CAESAR [ROMA VOL. I], the sixth album by Hesperia, has started; an intro and the first track have already been recorded. This will be a concept album about Julius Caesar, and the first of a few albums about the Roman era.

The tracks will not form a “continuum” like on the previous album; despite being linked to each other by the concept story, they’ll be single tracks about five minutes long.

Caesar’s life will be recreated with a Roman and cinematographic feel, where orchestra meets metal in its entirety (including its various subgenres), neofolk, ’60s-’70s (and earlier) rock opera, old prog, and identitary rock.

Among these different atmospheres you’ll find two more culturally miscellaneous tracks:

– the track introducing Cleopatra’s theme, with its Egyptian monumental feel

– the track about Caesar’s work “De Bello Gallico,” with a Celtic feel. This has been achieved also by using the crwth, a typical Celtic instrument dating back to the 7th century.

Once again Italic-Roman folk instruments will be used, together with mellotron, Korg, and a Hammond organ.

The usage of opera and especially the tenor will be extended.

The recording places will be different.

The album will also feature a Hesperian thematic cover of the Iron Maiden song “The Ides Of March” (official Caesar’s day of death).

The ritual-sciamanic side will help the album’s birth in a way that will be explained in the next studio reports.

Attached to this studio report are a few pictures showing the crwth recording evening. The crwth lines were played and arranged by Hesperus himself at the Picene-Celtic sword master Behoram Wallace’s haven. Behoram is the owner of the Celtic traditional instruments.

-Vote For Bluesman/Spinal Surgeon, Daniel Ivankovich, For “CNN Hero Of The Year”

Few people can list “bluesman” and “spinal surgeon” as their top two levels of expertise.

But then again, Dr. Daniel Ivankovich is not your average gentleman. The Yugoslavian-born Ivankovich also goes by the nicknames of “Dr. Dan” or “Chicago Slim,” who does his best to aid blues musicians, and help them get proper coverage to suit their needs from the health system (and even often providing free care through his non-profit One Patient Global Health Initiative).

Ivankovich was once a college basketball star at Northwestern University, before a career-ending knee injury put an unexpected halt to his dreams. But instead of feeling sorry for himself, Ivankovich found solace in the fields of surgery and blues music.

By co-founding the Chicago Blues All-Stars band (for which he supplies vocals and guitar), it was by performing in blues venues that he crossed paths with blues vets who were in need of better health care.

Due to his good work, Ivankovich has received praise and coverage from the press:

And as a result, Ivankovich has been named a 2015 Top 10 CNN Hero. Voting for CNN Hero of the Year continues through Sunday, November 15. All of this year’s Top 10 CNN Heroes will be honored during “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute,” on Sunday, December 6, on the global networks on CNN. For more information (and to place your vote), visit:

“I know I can’t fix everybody,” he told CNN. “My goal is to be the battering ram to help break down the barriers to get these patients the care and the resources they need.” And now, those who have benefitted from the hard work and good deeds from Daniel Ivankovich can say “thanks” by helping him being named “CNN Hero of the Year.”

-Cool to see Slik Toxik’s IRRELEVANT getting reissued, but, honestly, I won’t be buying it. I still have my original and it was one of those early/mid-1990s albums by fun/party/”hair” bands that had gone adrift. (These albums caused me heartache, and led me to start seeking new bands via import shops… Remember Kiss’ CARNIVAL OF SOULS? That was the first big Internet leak I cared about, and ugh… How about Skid Row’s SUBHUMAN RACE, Extreme’s WAITING FOR THE PUNCHLINE, Motley Crue’s s/t, Warrant’s ULTRAPHOBIC, Wildside’s s/t, Dokken’s DYSFUNCTIONAL, Vince Neil’s CARVED IN STONE, and INSANITY BEACH by Sleeze Beez? Ugh, ugh, and more ugh.) I totally dug Slik Toxik’s prior album, 1992’s DOIN’ THE NASTY, and I remember paying a lot to get IRRELEVANT via mail order, and then when it arrived I threw it on and went “Oofff…” Still, it is cool to even be reading about Slik Toxik in 2015.

-I was trolling around YouTube and found a full Judas Priest show, from the REDEEMER OF SOULS tour in Oslo, Norway, this past June 2nd. I know there are countless full concerts out there nowadays, but for some reason I still get happily surprised when I completely unintentionally stumble across something I’m totally interested in. The link for the show is https://youtu.be/gxgmRHey9iU , and the set list is as follows: “Battle Cry” (intro), “Dragonaut,” “Metal Gods,” “Devil’s Child,” “Victim Of Changes,” “Halls Of Valhalla,” “Love Bites,” “Turbo Lover,” “Redeemer Of Souls,” “Jawbreaker,” “Breaking The Law,” “Hell Bent For Leather,” “The Hellion/Electric Eye,” “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” “Painkiller,” “Living After Midnight.” I saw a slightly longer version of this show on the US tour, here in Chicago back in May. Gotta love the Priest.

-I just saw in a Chicago Tribune book review by Lloyd Sachs that “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s new novel “Career Of Evil,” written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, has “a title, chapter headings and themes taken from Blue Oyster Cult.” That’s just crazy and cool. Made me think of some funny mash-up titles:

“Harry Potter And The Agents Of Fortune”
“Harry Potter And The Fire Of Unknown Origin”
“Harry Potter And The 7 Screaming Diz-Busters”

-So, yeah, that Saxon BATTERING RAM five-song preview on Yahoo!… I saw it mentioned several times on Facebook so I finally relented and checked it out. The songs sound cool, typical heavy latter-day Saxon, but then “Stand Your Ground” just ends abruptly. I tried it twice to see if maybe I just had a bad connection or something, but it happened again at the exact same spot. Didn’t anyone test this?
