-Saxon To Level A BATTERING RAM At The World On October 16th

Legendary British Heavy Metal Quintet’s 21st Studio Album Boasts A Clinically “Heavy” Echo Of Their Glorious NWOBHM Sound

Saxon have never dealt in half-truths or incomplete missions.

With SACRIFICE they filled your heads with heavy metal thunder, and now Saxon want nothing more than to crush them with their very own, hand-crafted, not-safe-for-children brand new album, BATTERING RAM. Not. A. Problem.

With Biff Byford singing as well as he ever has, Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt making full use of the term “shredding” with their guitars, and the lock-steady rhythm of Nibbs Carter’s bass and Nigel Glockler’s drums, the future and the past crash together in an ear-scintillatingly engaging, raucous, melodic-yet-classically heavy 10 songs collection which will instantly be hailed as a Saxon classic. The title track, with its delectable twin guitar assault heralding the album’s commencement, gives the listener an instant crack around the chops, whilst traditionalists will be delighted to hear such a perfect marriage of old, classic Saxon with the newer, fresher invective in such riff-fronted fare as “Destroyer” and “Stand Your Ground,” but there are still moments of space and exploration which fans will love.

“This one’s a natural progression from SACRIFICE,” says Byford, “There’s a bit less rock’n’roll and a bit more ‘heavy’ on it. We wanted to keep focused on a style rather than moving around too much.”

Produced by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Accept) at his Backstage Recording Studios in rural Derbyshire, Saxon were able to hone in and whittle down any excess, finding the sonic space and balance to let BATTERING RAM’s riffs and melodies get the necessary space to scream front and center, Sneap bringing a crispness to the sound which evokes memories of the early ’80s without for one moment sounding dated. “Yes, Andy has been in charge of everything with this album, I keep on overview of it all, but he’s done a great job and we’re both pleased with the results. We have a great partnership.”

Lyrically, BATTERING RAM covers a variety of social situations, like the screaming fans who rage at the gig barriers (“Battering Ram”) or engaging in some good old fashioned myth (“The Devil’s Footprint” — a 200-year-old tale of people waking up in winter snowfall to see unexplained hoof prints which they followed, looking for an answer in vain).

“When I’m writing lyrics I like to switch back and forth between complex things, reality, and rock’n’roll,” says Byford, “I thought the whole folklore behind ‘The Devil’s Footprint’ made it great material for a metal song, being that it’s both historic and mythical.

“With ‘Queen Of Hearts’ I wanted to write something around Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice In Wonderland,’ and it’s about the chess game that happens in the story. I wanted it to have prog-feeling in the way of its ambiance and mood. Then you have songs like ‘Destroyer’ and ‘Hard And Fast’ which are ’80s inspired songs with that modern slant on it. I’m a big fan of Marvel comics, and I wanted to write a song around the character Destroyer, and with ‘Hard And Fast’ it’s as the title suggests, about driving fast! I do like to tie the lyric into the song, so if it’s going to be a song about driving fast, well, it has to be a fast, hard song!”

There is also the album’s closing cut, haunting, gripping, melancholic tale of the First World War, “The Kingdom Of The Cross,” where a poem unfurls the feelings and horrors which comprised this most brutal of global conflicts. “This year is the centenary of the end of the First World War. Nigel had a piece of music which he played on a synthesizer for a couple of years that I really liked. We had an actor (and singer), David Bower from the band Hell, read the poem and I sang the choruses. I didn’t want it to be typical Saxon, so it is just keyboards, bass, me and Dave.”

Wonderfully uncompromising, with BATTERING RAM Saxon have once again established their rightly-venerated credentials as Kings and vanguards of heavy metal music.

Biff Byford – vocals
Paul Quinn – guitars
Doug Scarratt – guitars
Nibbs Carter – guitars
Nigel Glockler – drums

-Avantasia Is Back; New Album And World Tour!

The original is back! Edguy front man Tobias Sammet has returned to the studio to work on the new chapter of Avantasia. The sequel to the successful latest album THE MYSTERY OF TIME (2013, charting in 16 countries in Europe, Asia and America, including #2 in Germany) will be called GHOSTLIGHTS and is scheduled to be released in early 2016. An EP/single is also planned to be released this autumn, and in March 2016 a giant all-star ensemble will set off on the GHOSTLIGHTS WORLD TOUR.

Tobias Sammet: “In the past months I’ve spent a lot of time in the studio, an odd recluse in the basement, secretly working obsessively on something that reads and feels and sounds like a new — very strong — chapter in the story of Avantasia. I must say Avantasia is a fantastic outlet for creativity, and it’s truly inspiring to create a piece of music for so many great vocalists and instrumentalists.

“The new material is very bombastic and dynamic, and even though it’s extremely diverse, every minute of it sounds like Avantasia. I’m really proud of what we’re creating right now. And as if that wasn’t enough: I’m anxiously looking forward to hitting the road again. I didn’t necessarily expect this to happen as in the past it has always been difficult to align the individual schedules of the guest stars, but things have worked out, and we’re ready to make it happen one more time! We’ll put on a big show, we’re gonna play over three hours, and we’ll take the fans to a magical world all its own — to Avantasia. The live set list is going to embrace the entire history of Avantasia, from THE METAL OPERA to GHOSTLIGHTS and of course everything in between!”

The world tour will kick off in Berlin on March 4th, 2016.

-Whitesnake’s Guitarist Joel Hoekstra To Release DYING TO LIVE Via Frontiers Music Srl On October 16, 2015 Worldwide

One Of The Most Exciting Melodic Hard Rock Albums Of The Year!

Featuring: Jeff Scott Soto, Russell Allen, Tony Franklin, Vinny Appice, Derek Sherinian, And More!

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Joel Hoekstra has announced the release of his new melodic hard rock studio album DYING TO LIVE from his electrifying new side project, Joel Hoekstra’s 13. Hoekstra is best known to rock fans as the current guitarist for Whitesnake, and also known for his work with Night Ranger, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and the show “Rock Of Ages.”

DYING TO LIVE features an all-star cast of rockers including Jeff Scott Soto (vocals), Russell Allen (vocals), Tony Franklin (bass), Vinny Appice (drums), and Derek Sherinian (keyboards), and will be available via Frontiers Music SRL on Friday, October 16th.

Hoekstra took charge of the creative process by handling the production, song writing, and arranging (music and lyrics). The end result could best be described as hard, melodic, classic rock that is Dio-ish at its heaviest and Foreigner-ish at its lightest.

“Years ago, I released three solo albums that were mainly instrumental guitar music. I wanted to put something out that showcased my production, writing, and playing in the genre that I’m known for, which is melodic, hard rock,” explains Hoekstra. “That’s when I decided to start what I consider to be my rock side project, Joel Hoekstra’s 13. DYING TO LIVE focuses on struggles, potential pitfalls, and the art of overcoming obstacles in life to finally arrive where we are meant to be.”

DYING TO LIVE was conceived before Hoekstra joined Whitesnake. David Coverdale gave the album his full blessing. “David wants his players to spread their wings and fly and of course be ready to rock when Whitesnake needs them, which obviously won’t be an issue.”

Excited how the new album turned out, Hoekstra is looking forward to the overall reaction from fans and media. “I hope everyone will give it a listen. I feel it showcases my production, writing, and playing in the genre I’m best known for these days. The lineup of musicians is stellar! I want to thank everyone for any support in advance. Life is good!”

NEW YORK, NY — ALIVE AND BURNING, the debut DVD/Blu-ray from Black Veil Brides, has just hit #1 on the Soundscan Music DVD Chart!

“As a rock and roll band that spends most of our lives and career playing shows on the road, to have our DVD representation of that show hit number 1 in our home country where it all started is one of the greatest feelings I’ve experienced as a musician,” says vocalist Andy Biersack. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible! Ektomorf Unveil Special Guest For Upcoming Album!

Hungarian neo thrash masters Ektomorf will release their new studio album, which was again produced by Tue Madsen (Antfarm studios, Denmark), soon.

This new effort will feature a famous guest vocalist this time: George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher from death metal legends Cannibal Corpse, who contributed vocals for a track called “Evil By Nature.”

Band leader Zoli comments:
“We are friends with the Cannibal Corpse guys since a long time. Last year in November I spoke to George (Fisher) about doing a song together. The recent Budapest show of Cannibal Corpse then was the perfect opportunity to meet and record his parts. So I took small home recording studio gear with me and recorded vocals with George in the dressing room before their show. It was fun and turned out killer! The song’s title is ‘Evil By Nature’ and it will appear on our upcoming album. Be sure, it will smash your face 100%! Prepare!”

Stahlmann: New video clip!

The new album CO2 will be out on August 28th. You can watch the video for the first single “Plasma” here:

-Satan: British Heavy Metal Titans To Release New Full-Length Via Listenable Records This Fall

Following the success of their recent South American tour, British heavy metal titans, Satan, are set to release their new studio album this October via Listenable Records. Titled ATOM BY ATOM, the 10-track monster was recorded at Newcastle’s First Avenue Studios, mixed and mastered by Dario Mollo (Crossbones, The Cage, Voodoo Hill), who helmed the band’s 2013’s critically-acclaimed comeback album LIFE SENTENCE, in Italy, and includes a collaboration with Angel Witch’s Kevin Heybourne. Cover art was commissioned to Eliran Kantor ( http://www.elirankantor.com/ ; Testament, Sodom, Sigh, Iced Earth, etc.) who also crafted the art for Satan’s previous opus.

Issues guitarist Steve Ramsey of the upcoming full-length, “We wanted to keep some continuity going with both the look and sound of this album. We’ve been working on the music for nearly two years now and I think people will definitely hear a progression from LIFE SENTENCE. I can’t really describe it but I promise you, these songs will speak for themselves.”

ATOM BY ATOM Track Listing:
1. Farewell Evolution
2. Fallen Saviour
3. Ruination
4. The Devil’s Infantry
5. Atom By Atom
6. In Contempt
7. My Own God
8. Ahriman
9. Bound In Enmity
10.The Fall Of Persephone

Founded in Newcastle, England in 1979, Satan was part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Though generally obscure throughout their career, the band is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s. Their lineup has undergone a number of personnel changes over the years and even changes in band name. For a time the band was called Blind Fury, putting out one album — 1985’s OUT OF REACH — under that moniker before reverting back to Satan shortly thereafter. In 1988, the group changed its name again to The Kindred and then yet again to Pariah, releasing two albums under that name before folding in the early ’90s. In 1997 Pariah released another album. The band’s shifting lineup has included members of many other heavy metal bands such as Blitzkrieg, Rough Edge, Pariah, Atomkraft, Avenger, Persian Risk, Cronos, and Battleaxe. In 1990, guitarist Steve Ramsey and bassist Graeme English together with singer Martin Walkyier of UK thrash metal band Sabbat founded folk metal act Skyclad.

ATOM BY ATOM will see release in early October via Listenable Records with cover art and teaser tracks to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Stand by.

Satan Personnel:
Brian Ross – Vocals
Steve Ramsey – Guitar
Russ Tippins – Guitar
Graeme English – Bass
Sean Taylor – Drums

-Thundermother To Release ROAD FEVER Through Despotz Records

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN — There’s a new female hard rock band in town and if you don’t watch your back, the Swedish based quintet, Thundermother are going to be on you like roadkill as they place their smelly stamp on the rock n roll landscape everywhere they go.

ROAD FEVER, the sophomore effort from Thundermother will hit the streets on 4 September through Despotz Records. The follow-up to the critically-acclaimed ROCK N’ ROLL DISASTER sees the outfit treading familiar waters with their tried-and-true classic-influenced hard rock. Front woman Clare Cunningman says, “We stuck with a sound that we all love and know will work as we have gained so many fans worldwide with this winning formula. But we hope to reach out now to a wider audience as our sound drifts towards the classic Motorhead era.” Guitarist Flippa Nassil adds pointedly, “If you like ’70s rock you will appreciate what we do — I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Rock and roll is not dead.”

Formed in 2010 when guitarists Flippa Nassil and Italian born Giorgia Carteri met with the same goals and passions — to put together and play in the ultimate rock and roll band. Several meetings and a few lineup changes later the duo hooked up with three others that share that same vision in the form of Irish singer Clare Cunningham, bassist Linda Strom and drummer Tilda Stenqvist.

Releasing the well-received ROCK N’ ROLL DISASTER in 2014 and hitting the Swedish national charts at #2, the band made their mark quickly. “I remember getting the call!” exclaims Cunningman. “It was a moment none of us will ever forget. To be received so warmly on our first record was an incredible feeling and showed that this was the beginning of something big for us.”

With ROAD FEVER, Thundermother hit back even harder than before with tracks such as “Deal With the Devil” (the album’s second single and the band’s tribute to Lemmy), “Thunder Machine” (the band being major supporters of feminism, Cunningham got a feminist tattoo while on tour in Spain and it was performed with the Hawk Thunder Machine, hence the song title) and the album’s first single, “It’s Just a Tease.” (“We’re female, proud of playing rock and roll and being sexy at the same time,” laughs Nassil.)

The quintet headed into the studio this past May to finalize work of ROAD FEVER, after having completed five songs in Lemon Recording Studio in Klippan (South Sweden) with Martin Ekelund. This final batch of songs were recorded at Cobra Studios in Stockholm with main engineer Martin Ehrencrona and with the band’s guitarist and founder, Filippa Nässil at the helm. The vibe of the studio suited the ladies perfectly with it’s pure ’70s rock’n’roll analog sound and original gear.

ROAD FEVER track listing:

1. It’s Just A Tease
3. Alright Alright
4. Deal With The Devil
5. Give Me Some Lights
6. Roadkill
7. Enemy
8. Vagabond
9. Thunder Machine
10. Rock N Roll Sisterhood

-Opposing Motion Unveils Artwork And Track List For Their Second Album

UK-based progressive metal outfit Opposing Motion are excited to unveil the artwork and track listing for the successor to their 2013’s debut LAWS OF MOTION, released by Lion Music. This second LP, titled INERTIA, will be released early 2016 and showcase 11 new tracks of the band’s trademark melodic progressive metal sound, initiated in 2010 with the release of the first EP THE ILLUSTRATION. The album will be mixed and mastered at Domination Studios in Italy by Simone Mularoni, producer of many of the genre’s top acts such as DGM, Vision Divine, Lalu, Empyrios, etc.

The album’s original artwork is in the hands of the talented team at Mayhem Design, recently in charge of Pyramaze’s latest offering. Keeping with the tradition of the genre’s striking covers art, the artist created a strong new imagery for the band, illustrating many of the lyrical themes evoked in the new tracks, while subtly connecting it to the band’s original vision and signature visual themes.

Although INERTIA is not a concept album in the purest tradition, many of the lyrical themes are connected, as implied in the title, to the concept of constant motion, unstoppable forces, resilience, and our ability to always move forward despite adversity while overcoming personal battles and hardships. Several tracks also explore literary works dear to the band that contain references to historical events, dystopian futures, and mythical journeys, all centered on the concept of INERTIA.

The track listing for INERTIA is as follows (total running time: 65 min)

1. Endless Ripples
2. Inertia
3. Ghost Tapestry
4. New Heaven
5. Machines of War
6. Southern Lights
7. Windows to the Past
8. Optical Illusion
9. Mirror Image
10. Nothing Stays the Same
11. Across the Oceans of Sand

-Vly: International Collective Signs With Laser’s Edge; Band Features Current/Former Members Of Crippled Black Phoenix, Änglagård, White Willow, And Others

Recently formed, internationally-based and extremely diverse collective, Vly, has signed with Laser’s Edge for the release of their debut album early this Fall. Amongst the quintet’s ranks, several members of the outfit have previously spent time in Crippled Black Phoenix, one from Änglagård, and all currently hold rank in Diet Kong, Typical Reptiles, Karl Demata Band, Il Tempio Delle Clessidre, Bernie Torme’, Shark Island, White Willow, and Necromonkey.

Vly began as strangers sending 1’s and 0’s across the Atlantic Ocean. British-based guitarist Karl Demata had a vague idea and a few demos, when a friend put him in touch with New York singer/artist Keith Gladysz. Keith began working on the demos, adding a more melodic, dream-like and decidedly indie sensibility. “It was a new way to work,” says Gladysz. “The music and collaborative art I’ve made always started with people I knew, and creating naturally came out of that understanding. That’s not the case with Vly. We managed to make an album without ever meeting. There was no gauge or reference point except for the music. It was a total shot in the dark.”

The sound of Vly hits elements of progressive rock, classic rock, folk, early-Floydian psychedelia, intimate pop melodies, massive walls of epic guitar riffage, post-classical, post-rock, and electronic music. And it’s the diverse background of the members that lead to the breadth of their sound. The progressive sentiment of Italian keyboardist Elisa Montaldo quickly attracted the ear of Demata. “The first time I heard Elisa play,” says Karl, “I knew we had to be in a band. Her innate melodic approach and instinctual understanding and knowledge of ‘anything prog’ is simply remarkable.” “Karl asked me to join the project at the very beginning,” Elisa picks up, continuing, “My idea of prog is somehow more vintage, more typical ’70s Italian style. After various experiments on arrangements and sounds, I went to Karl’s studio to record most of the keyboards, where we found the right balance.”

Connecting with strangers and expanding circles of mutual friends became the pattern for Vly. Demata next recruited experienced bass player Chris Heilmann, whom he’d worked with previously in Crippled Black Phoenix. Chris provided a solid backbone with a more classic rock attitude.

And Demata doesn’t hold back when talking about Sweden-based musician Mattias Olsson. “He is simply a genius. And he’s never predictable as a drummer. Mattias also contributed some vintage keys and odd analog noises, which have a definitive effect on the band’s sound. A common friend described him as a ‘lateral thinker,’ and I can’t think of a better way to describe him.”

Vly makes good on the futuristic dreams of the late 1990s, when promises of international recording sessions via the Internet excited incredulous musicians. Now that it’s a reality, the method may be less glamorously sci-fi than one had hoped; still, they get the job done. “I always disliked the clichés about music as a universal language, and more recently about the Internet bringing people together,” explains Gladysz. “I’m even more uncomfortable with those sentiments now, since Vly proved them true.”

Vly’s debut album, I / (TIME), will see release through the Laser’s Edge imprint September 2015. The album was engineered and produced by Karl Demata, with additional production by Keith Gladysz and Mattias Olsen, and mastered by Bob Katz. Additional info on the album will be released through the Summer months, including audio samples, an official video, and upcoming European tour dates.
