-Heaven & Earth In The Studio With New Band Lineup Working On New Album Set For Release This Fall

Set To Play Sweden’s Väsby Rock Festival Saturday, July 18

Heaven & Earth — the Los Angeles-based quintet who masterfully fuse elements of hard rock, blues, and bits of classical on their acclaimed album DIG, which they toured Europe in support of throughout 2014 — are back in the studio working on a new album (produced by Dave Jenkins and available via Quarto Valley Records) set to be released this fall (title and date TBA). In between writing and recording the new album, Heaven & Earth — Stuart Smith (band founder/guitarist), Joe Retta (vocals), Kenny Aronoff (drums), Lynn Sorensen of Paul Rodgers/Bad Company (bass/vocals) and Ty Bailie (keyboards) — will make an appearance at the Väsby Rock Festival ( http://www.vasbyrockfestival.se/ ) in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, July 18. Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio) will be filling in on drums for Aronoff, the band’s regular drummer, as he’s currently on tour with John Fogerty.

Says Stuart: “We’ve been hard at work writing for the new Heaven & Earth album which has been a long process as we felt we had a lot to live up to after DIG. We spent 14 months crafting and recording the songs for that album — and after all the positive reviews and press, myself and Bruce Quarto, our record company president, felt that we had to bring out something equally as good or better. We’ve been aiming for the ‘better’ end of the bar we previously set.” Stuarts adds: “I’m pleased to say that we’ve got quite a few new songs that we’re really happy with and will be releasing a few teasers very soon. We’ll also be debuting a few songs off the new upcoming Heaven & Earth album at the Vasby Festival this month so we’re really looking forward to that. On a personal note I’d like add that I’m really looking forward to playing live for the first time my ‘Stuart Smith Signature Model’ guitar built by Aero3 Guitars ( http://aero3guitars.com/our-guitars/stuart-smith-electric-guitar/ ). It’s been sounding amazing on recordings and rehearsals but I’m looking forward to blasting it out at a big festival.”

Heaven & Earth connected strongly with music audiences on their 2014 17-date European tour, garnering strong reviews along the way.

o “Those in the venue witnessed a very special show in an intimate setting and such an opportunity won’t be available for long as the band are destined for much bigger venues.” (METAL EXPRESS RADIO)

o “What a Night! … On the evidence of this performance, you should move on Heaven & Earth, not to miss them!” (ROCKTOPIA)

o “Heaven & Earth may well have delivered one of the best shows of the year… A very special show by a hugely talented band” (THE NEWCASTLE CHRONICLE)

o “The highly acclaimed quintet from Los Angeles have a created a fusion of Blues and Hard Rock with a touch of classical which contains everything you could wish for… power anthems, ballads, and melodic rock rub shoulders in a rather potent mix” (THE BOLTON NEWS)

Heaven & Earth’s third studio album, DIG — released April, 2013 on Quarto Valley Records — was produced by Dave Jenkins — who’s turned the knobs for everyone from Metallica to Tower Of Power. The album features special guests Howard Leese (Heart, Paul Rodgers), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), and David Paich (Toto). Heaven & Earth’s music comes together explosively on the album’s first single “No Money, No Love” and its controversial video which has logged over 545,000 views and can be viewed here: http://tinyurl.com/cdopr5d .

About Heaven & Earth:
The origins of Heaven & Earth align the band’s founder and visionary, Stuart Smith, with a rich lineage of rock’s most celebrated musicians. Kelly Hansen (Foreigner), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), and Kelly Keeling (King Kobra) all fronted the band at various junctures. Guitarists Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and Howard Leese (Heart, Paul Rodgers), singer and bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Country Communion), bassist Steve Priest (Sweet), and drummer Carmine Appice (Jeff Beck Group, Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart), among others, have each contributed their extraordinary talents to Heaven & Earth’s first two albums: HEAVEN & EARTH FEATURING STUART SMITH (1994) and WINDOWS TO THE WORLD (2000). Heaven & Earth’s groundbreaking debut album, HEAVEN & EARTH FEATURING STUART SMITH, is considered a cult classic and brought Smith to the forefront of the guitar elite being compared in the press to Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page, and garnering Smith the award for “Best Guitarist” and “Best New CD” for three years running at the Los Angeles All Access Music Awards. In the summer of 2012, the guitarist set out to mold Heaven & Earth into a world-class recording and touring band which led to the recording of their new album DIG and now the future has never looked brighter for the band.

-Act Of Defiance Team Up With Rock Hard Magazine To Exclusively Debut New Track!

In a time of endless sub-genre classifications, Act Of Defiance’s highly anticipated debut offering simply delivers 100% in-your-face, uncompromising heavy metal. The scathing debut, BIRTH AND THE BURIAL, is set for an Aug. 21st release via Metal Blade Records and pre-order bundle packages are now available at http://www.metalblade.com/actofdefiance .

The group has partnered with the website of Rock Hard Germany to exclusively debut the new track, “Refrain And Re-Fracture,” so click here now to check it out!

Shawn Drover (drums) states: “‘Refrain And Re-Fracture’ is a great example of using musical dynamics in a heavy metal song. All of us in Act Of Defiance have always been fans of cool acoustic/classical song intros before the metal assault kicks in, so when Chris presented this song to me I immediately loved the tune.

“Henry Derek really did a great job here as well by using his range a bit more as a singer, going from brutal singing to injecting some more melodic phrasing within the song as well, but still sounding very powerful. ‘Refrain And Re-Fracture’ is just another great example of showing that BIRTH AND THE BURIAL is certainly not a one-dimensional heavy metal record.”

Broderick further adds: “‘Refrain And Re-fracture’s’ creation started off with the classical guitar of all instruments. I wanted a moody beginning into a heavy verse with each instrument entering and slowly, building the tension until the transition to the verse. At this point, a tempo change was needed for something more fast-paced and aggressive with heavy vocals (Henry definitely delivered on that!!!).

“For the chorus I definitely was looking for as much melody as possible but still heavy in nature. The bridge to the solo and the solo has a much more modern feel to them, utilizing polyrhythms to create groove and an open canvas for my solo. As for the solo, hell, I just hope people like what I did! Overall I feel this song does a great job of showing how diverse Act Of Defiance can be while still staying firmly rooted in metal!”

With a hefty resumé that chronicles time spent riffing and shredding in Jag Panzer, Nevermore, and a seven-year stint in Megadeth, Chris Broderick’s pedigree speaks for itself. Furthermore, joined by powerhouse drummer — and fellow Megadeth alumnus and former Eidolon drummer — Shawn Drover, bassist Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall), and vocalist Henry Derek (ex-Scar The Martyr), the band are a truly formidable metallic behemoth. BIRTH AND THE BURIAL is 10 tracks of armor-plated, state-of-the-art heaviness.

-Marky Ramone Announces Canadian Performance And Appearance, Autobiography Released In New Territories

Earlier this year, Marky Ramone issued what is fast becoming known as the definitive book on the Ramones experience, “Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As A Ramone.” And the buzz about the book continues to grow; as Marky will be out promoting it with appearances. And while the book was originally issued in the US on January 13, it has just recently been released in such other territories as Brazil, England, and Spain:

For Brazil you can purchase the book here:

For England you can purchase the book here:

For Spain you can purchase the book here:
Hard cover – http://www.planetadelibros.com/punk-rock-blitzkrieg-libro-196817.html
eBook – http://www.planetadelibros.com/punk-rock-blitzkrieg-libro-197867.html

Canadian fans should also keep an eye out for Marky, as he will appearing on August 6th at Phi Centre at 7:00 p.m. in Montreal (presented by Heavy Montreal Festival and Grimposium, http://phi-centre.com/en/events/id/markyramone ), to sign his book and also answer questions as part of a Q&A with journalist Kim Kelly (Noisey, Vice).

Then, just a few days later on August 9th, Marky will be performing all the Ramones classics with his band, Marky Ramones’ Blitzkrieg (with Andrew WK), at the Heavy Montreal Festival. Also, a new, all-animated video clip has been issued for the song “I Wanna Win The Lottery” by Marky Ramone & the Intruders, which can be viewed here:

“Back in the nineties my friend won the NYS Lottery,” explains Marky about the song. “I was struck by how his life changed overnight. It inspired me to write the song. It’s a universal daydream. The song was co-produced by me and my buddy, Lars Frederkisen from Rancid. A few years ago I met Laurent in Paris. He was a fan and came to my show. We share the same love of movies and anime. He asked if I would like him to do a video of ‘Wanna Win The Lottery’ and of course I told him yes.”

And the accolades continue to pile up concerning “Punk Rock Blitzkrieg,” including stellar feedback from New Noise Magazine (“Probably one of the best books yet about a punk band that managed to influence so many outside of the world of punk”), Kirkus (“The last Ramone standing dishes on Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee, and Tommy, but the drummer is a lot more revealing about his own remarkable life outside the famously dysfunctional band”), and Classic Rock Revisited (“From driving his car in a drunken state through a retail store, to being the only Ramone to visit Joey on his deathbed, to keeping their music alive in the current day… this sucker will keep you reading, that is until you are done! Gabba Gabba Hey!”), among others.

After working practically non-stop for 11 years, which included rehearsing two-three times a week, 800+ shows in 20+ states and well over 10,000 CDs sold on six continents, upstate New York pure American Metal band Enertia was at a crossroads. After spending in excess of $25k recording their fourth album, FORCE, with producer Neil Kernon, the band had finally exhausted their bank account and didn’t have the money or resources to properly record their fifth album. It was time for Enertia to regroup.

Fast forward to 2007, after three productive years laying the groundwork for what would become their much-anticipated new album everything had almost disastrously ground to a halt, that is, until bassist Joe Paciolla made up his mind that these recordings had to be completed no matter the cost. In 2011, the band fortuitously happened upon a great studio and in it the remarkable engineer/producer, Tim Lynch, who was enlisted to help guide Enertia through the completion of the album.

Three additional years of hard work and several hundred hours were spent at The Recording Company in Esperance, NY, where Enertia created the most diverse, infectious, and prolific album of the band’s lengthy career, PIECE OF THE FACTORY. Enertia is now almost two decades in from the release of their debut EP, LAW OF THREE, and after years of hard work and perseverance it would seem this could their end up being their swan song. Could PIECE OF THE FACTORY be Enertia’s farewell, only time will tell, but delivering the fans an album this powerful indicates they most definitely plan on going out with the biggest bang of their nearly 20-year career.

For Fans Of: Blind Guardian, Jag Panzer, Queensryche, Scanner

Judicator’s third release, AT THE EXPENSE OF HUMANITY, is a progressive power metal concept album about singer John Yelland’s brother who passed away after battling cancer. The album details the story of John’s family, their struggles, and his personal existential and philosophical quandaries that resulted.

Musically, AT THE EXPENSE OF HUMANITY shows the band moving away from the Germanic power metal styles explored on their sophomore effort SLEEPY PLESSOW and plunging into more progressive territories, as well as incorporating other elements they had yet to discover within themselves. AT THE EXPENSE OF HUMANITY is a big, bold step for US metal and Judicator exhibits no signs of impeding its momentum now.

Wülfhook – THE IMPALER

1. The Impaler

10. Atomic Punk

Country: USA
For Fans Of: Judas Priest, Malice, Grim Reaper, Metal Church

Wülfhook, having formed in 2009, is a five-piece American heavy metal band from Detroit, Michigan. They have impressively self-financed three remarkable demos including 2012’s stellar SACRIFICE, which are the recordings that lead to their deal with Divebomb Records.

Their debut album, THE IMPALER, is a culmination of years of hard work and overcoming unforeseen adversities along the way. The end result, which was mixed by Jamie King at his Basement Studios, is nothing short of magnificent. THE IMPALER, simply put, is an unrelenting sonic attack that reveals a band that is completely unaffected by what’s popular or what other musicians are doing and is zeroed in on exactly what will make Wülfhook stand out in the over-crowded underground scene. No tongue in cheek retro throwback, just straight up heavy metal.

Track List:
1. Mesmerised

Eradikator are a four-piece thrash metal band from Birmingham, England, the birthplace of heavy metal monsters such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Napalm Death. No strangers to Divebomb Records, Eradikator have returned to the label after the successful release of their debut album, DYSTOPIA, via the label’s Bootcamp Series which not only reissues obscure lost treasures of the past, but also is a showcase for new artists through alternative promotion helping to support them while they get a foothold within the industry.

Picking right up where DYSTOPIA left off, the new album, EDGE OF HUMANITY, was conceived with the help of producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, Exploited). Drawing on all their life and musical influences thus far, Eradikator set out to steamroll through barriers plaguing new school thrash bands. Rather than simply cranking out up-tempo riffs and barrage of double kick drums to get fans excited, Eradikator constructed thoughtfully crafted material choosing to reward listeners with an album that showcases their maturity and evolution as a band, while never giving up on the key elements that makes heavy metal great.

-Masters Of Metal To Release FROM WORLDS BEYOND

LOS ANGELES, CA — Masters Of Metal is the band launched by metal veterans and members of Agent Steel, Juan Garcia (guitars), Bernie Versailles (guitars & vocals), Robert Cardenas (bass & backing vocals), and Rigo Amezcua (drums).

The Los Angeles-based four-piece released an independent self-titled EP in April 2013 which included four blistering tracks with everything that you can expect from members of Agent Steel. Recorded by Bill Metoyer (Fates Warning, Trouble, Gwar), and mixed by Bernie Versailles; who, aside from being Agent Steel’s guitarist also worked behind the board on the band’s OMEGA CONSPIRACY (1999), ORDER OF THE ILLUMINATI (2003), and ALIENIGMA (2007) albums.

The band entered the studio in 2014 to record their first full-length and just as the album was being finished in October 2014 Versailles sustained a brain injury, winding up in a coma. Since his unfortunate accident he’s been making a miraculous recovery with the help of friends, family, and fans. With Bernie unable to complete the album, producer and friend Bill Metoyer completed the album and also tracked the last song “Vengeance & Might” (which features lead vocals by James Rivera (Helstar), along with Helstar guitarist Larry Barragan, and Andrew Atwood).

Masters Of Metal recently signed to the German label Metalville Records for the release of their debut, FROM WORLDS BEYOND, featuring cover artwork by Gustavo Sazes (Arch Enemy, Angra, Firewind).

Co-founding guitarist Juan Garcia (Agent Steel/EvilDead) who recently returned from a successful European tour with Body Count comments: “The music on this new album captures the integrity, and dedication of the band. I think everyone involved raised the bar on songwriting, performance, execution, and brought their best to the table.”

FROM WORLDS BEYOND is scheduled for release on September 18, 2015.

-New Book, “Survival Of The Fittest: Heavy Metal In The 1990s,” Tells Story Of One Of The Genre’s Best — Yet Most Difficult — Decades

Since its inception in the late 1960s, heavy metal has experienced quite a few ups and downs in popularity. But there was one specific decade that sticks out as the most troubling — the 1990s. In what seemed like one fell swoop, a style of metal that had been popular for much of the 1980s was rendered obsolete, and in its place, was a much more real, raw, and unique approach — detected in several new metal-based “sub-genres.” Add to it several changes in the music industry and media, and it appeared as if traditional metal may have met its expiration date… before several bands (and a certain traveling festival tour) helped put headbanging rock back on track.

Written by journalist/author Greg Prato, “Survival Of The Fittest: Heavy Metal In The 1990s” is the first book to focus entirely on this decade. Set in an oral history format, “Survival” features over 80 interviews conducted exclusively for this book, including current or past members of Pantera, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament, Dream Theater, King’s X, Extreme, Winger, Cinderella, Living Colour, Faith No More, Primus, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Stone Temple Pilots, Kyuss, Danzig, Clutch, Life Of Agony, Biohazard, Type O Negative, Within Temptation, Cradle Of Filth, Death, Coal Chamber, and System Of A Down (among many others), as well as Eddie Trunk, Riki Rachtman, and Lonn Friend. Also featured is a foreword penned by Pantera bassist Rex Brown.

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist, who has written for Rolling Stone and Guitar Player, and has authored such books as “Iron Maiden: ’80 ’81,” “The Faith No More & Mr. Bungle Companion,” “The Eric Carr Story,” and “Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History Of Seattle Rock Music.” “Survival Of The Fittest” is his 16th book overall.

Available as a paperback version [616 pages, $24.99], a Kindle download [$9.99], and a Nook download [$9.99], “Survival Of The Fittest” helps put the ’90s and heavy metal all into perspective.

Two New Releases For July 2015

July 15: Roadhouse – “Them Changes”

Lars Eric Mattsson’s new live band releases its first single as download (as well as video on YouTube).

“Them Changes,” a cover of the Buddy Miles classic originally recorded by Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Buddy Miles etc., is the debut single from Roadhouse:

Lars Eric Mattsson – Guitar
Johanna Mattsson – Vocals
Olle Sjöstrand – Drums
Mike Ahlskog – Bass

The story of Roadhouse goes way back to 1983-1986 when Lars, Olle, and Micke played together in the band Joe Cool, which was Lars’ first serious band and where he started writing and developing his own style as both a musician and as a composer. Lars’ recent album HOT AND ABLE 1983-86 features the songs written during this period. In 1986 Joe Cool split up, but later Micke was also a member of Lars’ band Vision in the early ’90s. Lars Eric Mattsson’s Vision sold well and charted in Japan in 1992.

After this period Lars worked with other musicians until early 2015 when talk came up about putting together a live band with the intention of doing cool original free versions of some cool blues and rock classics, and in came the amazing singer Johanna Mattsson who was just a child the last time the guys in the band played together.

Roadhouse is a live act more than anything and looking to bring their cool sounds to music lovers…

Currently they are performing a show of their own versions of classic blues and blues-influenced rock songs.

-Giannotti Merges Progressive Sounds With Songcraft On THE GREAT UNKNOWN

Admirers of such prog rock heavyweights as of Pink Floyd, earlier Genesis, Yes, Renaissance, and Jethro Tull are sure to enjoy the latest release from Giannotti, entitled THE GREAT UNKNOWN. The Connecticut-based singer/guitar/flute (multi instrumentalist) has previously appeared on the Jasper Wrath Album, three of Cannata/Cannata-Arc Angel CDs and the 1997 Jasper Wrath ANTHOLOGY release, before recently issuing his aforementioned solo debut.

And Giannotti worked with the best in the business on THE GREAT UNKNOWN, by enlisting Jonathan Wyner (who has previously worked with James Taylor, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Kiri Te Kanawa, etc.) to master the album, and having artist Ioannis (who has worked with Fates Warning, Dream Theater, AC/DC, Deep Purple, King Crimson, etc.) to supply the artwork for the album cover.

Speaking to the Classic Rock Revisited site, Giannotti was asked the meaning behind the album’s mysterious title. “Well Jeb, the answer to that question is… Unknown. Sorry, couldn’t resist. No secret meaning, it sounded mysterious and I like a little mystery. The Unknown is really about the future, for better or worse. In the title track it’s making it for the better. For the most part I like my lyrics to be positive and uplifting. Too much negativity out there.”

In the same interview, Giannotti was also asked if THE GREAT UNKNOWN was written as a concept album. “It was never intended to be a concept album, although ‘Sacred Ground’ fits perfectly coming off ‘The Great Unknown.’ That said, because the theme of all seven pieces were written from the same perspective, they do seem to fit. The track order had to be in that sequence to make it work.”

Additionally, the reviews regarding THE GREAT UNKNOWN have been stellar, as evidenced by a write-up in Progression Magazine by John Collinge, which stated “Giannotti is an excellent singer, player, and composer of melodies that register addictively from the first listen. He also writes enchantingly cogent lyrics, whose themes of inner/outer travels through time and distance impart a wistfully poignant sense of wonder.”

Additionally, Classic Rock Revisited gave it an “A” rating, and offered further praise: “This one is a winner from start to finish. Buy this one and support real music being made by real artists.” And writer Jeb Wright has been a supporter of Giannotti and his music, stating that “What was created is a complex and multi-dimensional album that is honest and pure in its intention. This is a classy, thought- and feeling-provoking album from the opening note until the finale” and “THE GREAT UNKNOWN is a progressive, art rock masterpiece.”

-Agusa: Swedish Psychedelic/Prog Unit To Release Sophomore Full-Length Via Laser’s Edge Later This Month

Boasting over 40 minutes of new material divided over two tracks, Agusa delivers a wide array of seamlessly-executed, organic rock. The band’s tranquil output blends tripped-out psychedelic and progressive rock structures, driven by folk-inspired occult influences. The otherworldly results instill visions of nature, the cosmos, and dreamlike passages, meandering into realms of a possibly supernatural or parallel existence. While not a fully instrumental recording, backing vocal mantras only seep in through purposeful cracks in the construction of these immense movements, adding an even more spacious feeling to the overall flow of the album.

As a precursors to its impending release, today The Obelisk offers up the 20-minute opening hymn, “Ganglat Fran Vintergatan,” elaborating eloquently and accurately, “AGUSA 2 further gels the chemistry Agusa showed on their debut into two extended pieces — side A’s ‘Ganglat Fran Vintergatan’ (20:22) and side B’s ‘Kung Bores Dans’ (18:17) — rife with progressive complexity, accomplished melodies of guitar, organ and flute, and quick-turning rhythms driven by a classic sense of movement that fits smoothly into Agusa’s method. As one might expect, both cuts offer plenty of sprawl, but the band operate from a sense of purpose as well, and it’s not merely exploration for its own sake, but an expression of a naturalist instrumental ideal, and one gorgeously conjured and languid in its flow but not at all sonically lazy. Both ‘Ganglat Fran Vintergatan’ (‘Marching Tune From The Milky Way’) and ‘Kung Bores Dans’ (‘King Winter’s Dance’) unfold gradually, with the organ as a figure no less prevalent than the guitar, and engage in a crisp but progressive bounce. There’s no mistaking a heavy sense of groove, but they’re also capable of jazzy turns when called for, adding a sense of spontaneity to the proceedings and allowing the band to shift fluidly from one movement to the next while also expanding the context of the album overall. Not bad for two tracks on their sophomore outing, and by that I mean Agusa 2 offers both proggy substance and a psychedelic aesthetic that makes their work eminently listenable.”

Trip into the sounds of “Ganglat Fran Vintergatan,” at this location:

AGUSA 2 track listing:
1. Ganglat Fran Vintergatan
2. Kung Bores Dans

Agusa was formed in the Springtime of 2013, when Tobias Petterson and Mikael Ödesjö, former members of Kama Loka, recruited Dag Strömqvist and Jonas Berge for their early ’70s progressive rock project. In the Summer, the outfit ventured out to the countryside where Dag lived, to a place called Agusa — virtually only a loose gathering of homes deep in the forest. Within these secluded surroundings, and the most amazingly sunny, warm Summer day, the new collective had an extensive, extremely inspired jam session which somewhat solidified the direction of their sound, so of course, the name Agusa was simply perfect for the outfit.

In the Autumn of 2014, the band went into the studio to record their first album, HÖGTID, which was released on vinyl and digital media in early 2014. After a handful of gigs during the Winter, Dag decided to leave Agusa to travel around India, and following a number of auditions, Tim Wallander, also a member of blues trio Magic Jove, joined the band. In the beginning of 2015, the refreshed lineup went into Studio Möllan once again to record their sophomore full-length, this time having asked a close friend of theirs, Jenny Puertas, to play flute on the recording. The match was so perfect that the band instantly invited her into the band on a full-time basis, expanding their lineup once again. They began performing with this new arrangement weeks later, and have not looked back.

Laser’s Edge, will release AGUSA 2 on CD and digital platforms on July 24th, while Agusa will issue the album on vinyl through their own Kommun2 label.

Tobias Petterson – bass
Mikael Ödesjö – guitar
Tim Wallander – drums
Jonas Berge – organ
Jenny Puertas – flute
