-We went to Five Guys for burgers the other day, and inside (and outside) they were jamming Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” Judas Priest’s “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” Jane’s Addiction’s “Mountain Song,” and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield,” among others. Free peanuts, too. I love that place. – Tim

-Act Of Defiance Debut “Throwback” Video And Launch Pre-Orders For Debut Album!

In a time of endless sub-genre classifications, Act Of Defiance’s highly anticipated debut offering simply delivers 100% in-your-face, uncompromising heavy metal. The scathing debut, BIRTH AND THE BURIAL, is set for an August 21 release via Metal Blade Records and pre-order bundle packages are now available at http://www.metalblade.com/actofdefiance .

The group’s first official introduction to the masses is via the album’s ripping lead-off track “Throwback,” which is a face-melting all-out thrash assault. The new music video for it, shot by renowned director Corey Soria (Danzig), can be viewed now at http://www.metalblade.com/actofdefiance .

With a hefty resumé that chronicles time spent riffing and shredding in Jag Panzer, Nevermore, and a seven-year stint in Megadeth, Chris Broderick’s pedigree speaks for itself. Furthermore, joined by powerhouse drummer — and fellow Megadeth alumnus and former Eidolon drummer — Shawn Drover, bassist Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall), and vocalist Henry Derek (ex-Scar The Martyr), the band are a truly formidable metallic behemoth. BIRTH AND THE BURIAL is 10 tracks of armor-plated, state of the art heaviness.

Drover states: “‘Throwback’ is not your average speed/thrash metal tune. The song is also pretty progressive at times with a lot of stopping and starting going into the bridge and they are all at different times, so we really had to memorize the count. I was really impressed with the way Chris wanted to write a little bit out of the box, shall we say.

“Chris also wrote all of the lyrics for the song, which were also impressive to me. They are certainly dark in the subject matter, as they should be to fit the aggressiveness of the song. Quite a nice fit if you ask me.

“Making the video in L.A. for ‘Throwback’ with Corey was the easiest and most focused video shoot I have ever been a part of. The concept was very ‘old school metal’ in nature with just smoke, lights, the band, and METAL! What a concept. We all shared the common vision of just being a Metal band captured on film and Corey got it right away. Corey and his entire crew were a sheer joy to work with.”

Broderick further adds: “‘Throwback’ came about through the influence of great thrash players such as Kerry King (Slayer) and Rob Cavestany (Death Angel). They gave me the inspiration to write a tear your head off, insanely fast rhythm. From there it progressed as I wrote, into a song that doesn’t only have elements of thrash but everything in between with elements of progressive, and groove.

“I never expected ‘Throwback’ to be the first release off the CD, as it’s not commercial, doesn’t follow a typical verse, chorus, solo scheme, and is almost six minutes long. However, when you hear the fire, emotion, and brutality of the song, it becomes very clear that it was a contender to show people what Act Of Defiance is really about.

“It was awesome working with Corey Soria on the music video. He had the same vision as us and understood immediately what the song was trying to say and how it should look. Along with the insight he had, there was a tireless work ethic, doing different angles, pans, and trying new ideas as he conceives them is an art in itself. When we looked at the first edit, my jaw dropped and then he came back with more that included post editing FX that added to the mood. From the camera angles, to the lighting and editing this video far surpassed what I hoped for.”

-Speedtrap Set Release Date For Second Svart Album

Speedtrap’s sophomore album, STRAIGHT SHOOTER, will hit the shops September 11th via Svart Records, and the new single, also titled “Straight Shooter,” is out now as a teaser for the album and the band’s summer live performances.

Speedtrap’s debut album, POWERDOSE, took many by surprise and left many established acts eating dust on several end-of-the-year lists in 2013. Metal Hammer called it “metal fed on a diet of Motorhead and alcohol, Exciter and suspect powders — high octane and hellbent for leather,” while InvisibleOranges.com considered it a “fist-raising triumph.” Since then, Speedtrap have performed across the European continent and also gone through some lineup changes: Jaakko Hietakangas (ex-Ranger) has joined the ranks as second guitarist, and Antti Salminen has taken up bass duties while earlier bassist Markus Hietamies has switched to the drum set.

Even though Speedtrap still are a loud, obnoxious bunch of catchy riff-mongers with no regard for speed limits, STRAIGHT SHOOTER also showcases the band’s ability to push the envelope and, with their new dual-guitar setup, write memorable songs that twist and turn like a drag racer on LSD. Hear the first evidence of this with the “Straight Shooter” single:

The album cover was painted by Paul Chapman.

Track listing for Speedtrap’s STRAIGHT SHOOTER:
1. No Glory Found
2. Torches Ablaze

As a further enhancement of the US division of PSR, we are proud to announce that As Darkness This (formerly Graven Image) have signed a worldwide deal with us. The new album LIFE INCOMPLETE will be released this year and was produced by Mike Vescera (Obsession, ex-Y. Malmsteen).

Band statement:
“As Darkness Dies (ADD) are pleased to too have signed with Pure Steel Records from Germany. This culminates a lot of hard work and effort by the band and our producer Michael Vescera (Obsession, Loudness, Yngwie Malmsteen, Animetal USA) guiding us every step along the way. To go from local band to being a signed band is something every musician dreams of; we have been given that chance, and opportunity. Art is art regardless of the medium, and to have the chance to get it onto a world stage is something every artist hopes and dreams about. We are looking forward to the future, and looking back on the past, and how and where it all started, a couple of guys playing music just hoping they were good enough for people to like what it is that they are putting together.

“Here’s to all the possibilities, aspirations, and dreams, and to giving people something they can hold on too. Music is more powerful than any other force in life because it sums up everything in life. And we all love that one song. Here’s to music, here’s to all it can bring out in each and every one of us.”

-Battlecross Premiere New Song “Spoiled” Via Loudwire!

New Album RISE TO POWER Out August 21 On Metal Blade Records!

Motor City thrashers Battlecross are currently out on the road with Crowbar and Lord Dying on “The Summer of Doom Tour” in support of their forthcoming release RISE TO POWER! The tour has been a career highlight for the band and the legendary sludge metallers Crowbar have really taken a liking to the band.

Today the band unleashes another scorching track from RISE TO POWER. Loudwire is exclusively premiering the song entitled “Spoiled.” Get your first listen to the track here:

Guitarist Tony Asta spoke about the track: “‘Spoiled’ kicks in with a heavy rockin’ old-school vibe and progresses into a brutal, more technical feel. It’s also a really fun song to jam. The subject matter and lyrics of ‘Spoiled’ were inspired by the dependency on modern technology, more specifically the cyber world. An entire generation thrives from its use but does not know what it was like before the Internet existed. It IS a great tool, although the magnitude of its impact on our everyday lives sometimes gives me the chills. This is the only song I had a hand in writing lyrics for and you can thank the ‘phone-gazing zombies’ for it.”

Additionally the first song from RISE TO POWER, “Not Your Slave,” is streaming at http://www.metalblade.com/battlecross . RISE TO POWER will be released worldwide on Metal Blade Records on August 21, 2015. The record was produced by Jason Suecof, and mixed/mastered by Mark Lewis at Audiohammer Studios. Cover art was completed by Hungarian artist Péter Sallai ( http://www.mortpaintgraphics.com/ ; Sabaton, Sacred Steel).

RISE TO POWER track listing:
1. Scars
2. Not Your Slave
3. Absence
4. Spoiled
5. The Climb
6. Blood & Lies
7. Bound by Fear
8. Despised
9. Shackles
10. The Path

Battlecross’ previous album, WAR OF WILL, debuted at #134 on the Billboard Top 200 chart upon its release in July of 2013. This was the band’s first-ever Billboard chart debut! WAR OF WILL also peaked at #3 on the US iTunes metal chart on the day of release. Watch the music video for “Never Coming Back” now at http://www.metalblade.com/battlecross .

Bat, the unholy super-group featuring Municipal Waste guitarist Ryan Waste on bass/vocals, former DRI drummer Felix Griffin, and Volture guitarist Nick Poulos, is very pleased to announce their recent addition to this year’s Gwar B-Q in Richmond, Virginia alongside the likes of The Descendents, Cro-Mags, Ghoul, Ringworm, Child Bite, and more! The band’s Gwar B-Q appearance follows a headlining performance in Raleigh and serves as a precursor to a rare run of live abrasions through Richmond, Cleveland, Chicago, and Pittsburgh in September.

Comments Waste of the oncoming onstage demolitions, “After finishing up our debut full-length album on Hells Headbangers this summer, we in Bat are gearing up for a short run around some rad US festivals. The first being the Gwar B-Q in our hometown of Richmond, which is always wet and wild. Come September, we hit the road again to play in Cleveland at the Hell’s Headbash. We’re thrilled to play with our pals in High Spirits and Midnight on the opening night. Beforehand, we’re cramming in another hometown gig and hitting Chicago and Pittsburgh to round out the Labor Day weekend. Come rage with us and always beware of the Bat!”

The Virginia/Texas meta punk marauders in Bat released their PRIMITIVE AGE EP last year on cassette via Tankcrimes and on 12″ vinyl via Hells Headbangers. Channeling the spirits of Venom, Hellhammer, Motörhead, and Discharge, the EP features five filthy numbers of confrontational KILL ‘EM ALL angst and enough vocal venom to level a nation. Said Last Rites of the offering, “This nasty little beast is a crust-a-licious demo-nic hybrid of ugly gutter thrash with a vicious punk spirit and a dose of injected blackness. Jump back 30 years to an uncomfortable-yet-awesome three-way between Cronos, Lemmy, and Tom Warrior (or, whatever, Satanic Slaughter) — then BOOM, BAT! A close 21st-century equivalent would be Midnight, only with less sleazy Satanic debauchery and more of an all-encompassing generalized rebelliousness.”

The PRIMITIVE AGE EP is available digitally at the official Bat BandCamp page ( http://bewareofthebat.bandcamp.com/ ) and on cassette via Tankcrimes ( https://tankcrimes.merchtable.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=BAT ; where you’ll also find additional merch). You can also nab a copy of Bat’s recently issued “Cruel Discipline” 7″ out on Hells Headbangers ( http://shop-hellsheadbangers.com/bat-cruel-discipline-vinyl.asp ) as well as the 12″ version of PRIMITIVE AGE.

In related news, “Living Fast,” the heavy metal talk show created by Waste continues to reap views from the headbanging public. The first episode featured John Gallagher of Raven while the second episode, divided into two parts, takes place during the Caulture Shock Tour with Cauldron and Waste’s heavy metal band, Volture, where Waste visits with Michael Denner (Mercyful Fate) at Beat Bop Records, his second-hand vinyl shop located in the heart of Copenhagen. Recently unleashed, Canadian edition third episode features Dave Carlo and Mike Campagnolo of Razor and number one Anvil fan, Colin “Maddog” Brown. During 2014 the band toured US and UK twice, including a set at Hard Rock Hell AOR Festival, as well as a show at V’sby Rock. . . ColdSpell is melodic hard rock from Sweden — heavy and melodic with big choruses, edgy guitars and a big arena sound!” See http://www.coldspell.se/ and http://www.facebook.com/pages/ColdSpell/164708699316 for more.

-All three of director Penelope Spheeris’ “Decline Of Western Civilization” movies — “The Decline Of Western Civilization” (1981), “The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years” (1988), and “The Decline of Civilization Part III” (1998) — are now available on Blu-ray and DVD this week through a four-disc Shout! Factory set entitled THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION COLLECTION. From a SeattleTimes.com article: “The films document the music and culture of Los Angeles youth over the course of two decades. The first ‘Decline’ spotlighted classic punk acts like Black Flag, the Germs, and X. ‘Decline II’ showcased the slicker realm of metal, contrasting would-be hopefuls (London, Odin) with the old guard (Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith). ‘Decline III’ looks at latter day L.A. punk, specifically the ‘gutter punks’ who eke out a living hustling for spare change.” Bonus features include commentary tracks by Dave Grohl (first film) and Spheeris and London’s Nadir D’Priest (“Part II”), interviews with Spheeris, trailers, a 40-page booklet, and “never-before-seen original footage, performances and interviews” with Aerosmith, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Lemmy, Poison, etc. DVD Talk has an excellent, in-depth review with details on the extras at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/68048/decline-of-western-civilization-collection-the/ . The films reportedly will screen in theaters in Seattle later this year. See http://penelopespheeris.com/ and http://www.shoutfactory.com/ for more.

Tour hype: “Two Swedish bands with a lot in common! Though their sonic ideals are firmly rooted in the past, they are exploring the future of underground metal through creative songwriting and unusual genre crossovers. Both bands are currently returning to the scene with new material after years of silence and are joining forces for a European tour in the fall of 2015. Starting off in the United Kingdom and continuing on a campaign through continental Europe, these brothers in arms are psyched about finally hitting the road together to present a wide palette of heavy, doom, speed, and thrash metal soaked in the sweat of do-it-yourself punk mentality. Ears will bleed, heads will bang and fists will be raised triumphantly as a new metal movement dawns — where will you be?” See http://www.facebook.com/Noctumofficial for more.

The David Shankle Group, featuring the ex-Manowar guitarist, is back with its third full-length and it’s another festival of shreddy power metal. What amounts to a “Chicago Metal All-Stars” lineup is rounded out by the versatile Warren Halvarson (Damien Thorne) on vocals, Michael Streicher (Blackened, Kings Of The Ryche) on bass, and the amazing Gabriel Anthony (Pamela Moore, Radakka, Bludgeon, Sgt. Roxx) on drums. The album consists of eight full-length vocal tracks and two instrumentals. Unsurprisingly, there’s really no slowing own here, from the opening title track to the catchy “Fuel For The Fire,” and from the charging “Eye To Eye” to the closer “Across The Line” (shades of TRILOGY-era Malmsteen). The first instrumental, the brief guitar piece “Demonic Solo” (from the movie “Jezebeth”), offers somewhat of a respite but the second, the nearly nine-minute “The Hitman,” is a giant pile of six-string madness starring guests Michael Angelo Batio (Holland, Nitro), Parker Lundgren (Queensryche), T.D. Clark (Dee Snider, Chris Medina), Joe Stump (Reign Of Terror, HolyHell), Tommy Vitaly (Seven Gates), and Roger Staffelbach (Artension, Artlantica, Angel Of Eden). If you’re only familiar with Shankle’s work on Manowar’s THE TRIUMPH OF STEEL, be advised his work in DSG is generally more up-tempo American power metal, more riff-based, and more dynamic and varied, with plenty of over-the-top guitar playing. The production seems a bit sterile at times, and the solos have kind of a “grafted on” feel, but this is one hard-charging, kick-ass band. Seek them out.
