-Blackwelder — Featuring Primal Fear, Dio Disciples, & Hangar Members — Signs With Rock’N’Growl

International power prog metal band Blackwelder signs worldwide management deal with Germany’s Rock’N’Growl Management. Hailing from the four corners of the world, Blackwelder is a brand new metal experience featuring some of the top names in Power Prog Metal today. Arguably the best singer in all of metal, Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear, ex-Gamma Ray) fronts this extraordinary outfit at the top of his game, alongside guitar virtuoso Andrew Szus (Seven Seraphim). Bjorn Englen (Dio Disciples, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) and Aquiles Priester (Hangar, ex-Angra) round out this unstoppable team of what quite possibly could be one of the greatest lineups metal has ever seen.

Blackwelder are:

Ralf Scheepers – Vocals (Primal Fear, ex-Gamma Ray)
Andrew Szucs – Guitar (Seven Seraphim)
Bjorn Englen – Bass (Dio Disciples, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen)
Aquiles Priester – Drums (Hangar, ex-Angra)

Blackwelder began as the long-awaited follow-up to Seven Seraphim’s BELIEVE IN ANGELS. Bit by bit, as the songs materialized, it became evident to main man Andrew Szucs that this music should carry the banner of a new musical entity, emerging from a richer, darker source thus, Blackwelder was born.

Andrew began this musical journey alone, however, once he completed the framework for all of the songs, the band members began to fall into place like pieces of a puzzle.

Bjorn Englen was the first to climb aboard, expertly adding his bass lines to the songs. Bjorn would later go on tour with Tony MacAlpine alongside drummer Aquiles Priester, after which, it seemed only natural to keep this rhythm section intact for Blackwelder.

Once Andrew’s guitars were recorded, it became evident that a true powerhouse vocalist was needed to carry these songs to completion. Not just any voice would do. Blackwelder would need the stratospheric vocal stylings characterized by the rich tradition of European heavy metal, and who better to do that than the voice of Primal Fear: Ralf Scheepers. Like a dragon with its fire, Ralf’s voice and lyrical themes are a natural fit to the songs of Blackwelder; blending and contrasting with the Marshall-based guitar tones in perfect harmony.

Topping off this powerful lineup is the unparalleled drumming of Aquiles Priester. Andrew and Aquiles agreed to finish the songs with Aquiles’ unique pyrotechnic display of progressive metal drumming techniques and what a display it is.

Blackwelder is a winning formula of raw musical virtuosity that holds the listener’s ears right from the start. This act is surely not one to be missed and cannot be denied!

-Frontiers Rock Festival

The Label Festival
May 1, 2, 3 • 2014 Trezzo sull’Adda (Milano) – Italy

It was 1996. Serafino Perugino, after a sleepless night, decided to move forward and start up a business that could finally involve him in music, his greatest passion. Then, two years later Frontiers Records debuted on the international markets with its first release.

Eighteen years passed… It has been wild ride, so many years of “blood, sweat and tears”, but — in the end — we dare to say we made it, managing to sign and release so many successful albums with top artists and bands that made us and all of you dream the dream.

But (there’s always a “but”…) during all these years a great idea always stayed in in the back of our minds. It was “the” idea: what the fans have always been asking for, something that’s always been growing and that we never dared to put into reality… a LIVE event that could show everyone OUR way to think and create music and to celebrate the achievements that Frontiers Records, today’s leading indie Rock label in the World, has accomplished during the years.

So after countless mails and requests from fans, friends, and partners, we decided that THIS IS THE TIME! So… here we go! What we offer you is NOT a Rock Festival, but a full blast EVENT: three exciting days in which absolute TOP bands will share the big stage with some new brilliant acts. For some of them this will be the very FIRST TIME in Italy. Or better, for some of them, this will be the VERY FIRST TIME EVER and for others this will be anyway a very special concert with original lineup reunion or performing classic songs not played since a long time.

We made an effort to give you what you have been missing for a long time: a three-day Rock Party where we will offer you the chance to meet your favorite artists, to breathe and feel the unique and friendly atmosphere of a Rock event, to join the nice facilities of a hand-picked boutique venue, and — most importantly — to fully enjoy some fabulous music and the exciting performances of these bands.

Now it’s YOUR TURN to join the celebration. Won’t you dare to miss the ROCK EVENT of the year!?

-Snake City Music Update

[Note: This is Lizzy Borden/Lynch Mob/Starwood bassist Marten Andersson’s newsletter. – Tim]

2014 – Already… Wow!

I hope everyone had a great 2013. It’s gone in a flash. The holidays are over and a new year are upon us, with the NAMM Music Show up next! We started out 2013 playing on the 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise and ended up in Sweden for the Skogsrojet Festival. As always it’s awesome meeting everyone and enjoying our conversations.

As you might have heard my bro (and Lizzy Borden) guitarist Dario Lorina has been selected as the new guitarist in Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society. I am very excited for him. He is a talented and amazing guitar player with many years to come in the business. I will continue to work with Dario in his solo band. The debut DARIO LORINA CD is out now on Shrapnel Records and we are all playing our asses off on this record, it’s a must for fans of instrumental shredding music.

The CD can be purchased at Amazon or on iTunes (or a well stocked record store).

A Lizzy Borden classic song is in the new movie “Metalhead” (a.k.a. “Málmhaus”) from acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker Ragnar Bragason, best known for his films “Börn” (“Children”) and “Foreldrar” (“Parents”). This darkly comic drama about a grief-stricken young woman who adopts the persona and decibel-blasting predilections of her deceased brother Málmhaus, it includes songs by not only Lizzy Borden but also Judas Priest, Savatage, Megadeth, and many more. The official trailer for “Metalhead” (with English subtitles) can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyxhcNsjWKI .

-Gotthard: New Album BANG! Will Be Released On April 4

The year starts with a BIG BANG! Rock fans can rejoice, because the Ticino platinum-band will release their new album with the title BANG! In addition to Musikvertreib in Switzerland, for the first time, they have Pias (the rest of the world) and Marquee Inc (Japan) as new distribution partners on board.

Musically, we can be pleased to have 100% Gotthard, since Leo Leoni and Charlie Bauerfeind are the production team for earthy hard rock, pure Gotthard spirit and wonderful rock melodies melding together.

BANG! began like its predecessor FIREBIRTH — number 1 in the Swiss charts, number 9 in the German — in the band’s own Yellow House Studios in Lugano in autumn/winter 2013. It reproduces the earlier Gotthard times and transports them into 2014.

Mix engineer Ronald Prent is responsible for the topical and appropriate polish, as he mixed the new album. The Dutchman, who is at home in the famous Wisseloord Studios, has already presented his expertise in the albums LIPSERVICE and DOMINO EFFECT. “We got to know him as unbelievably competent and tasteful,” said Leo Leoni. “You can see that he loves rock music and knows how to present the sound. He understood then straight away what we wanted and how we should sound. This time, he has shown us his expertise again.” No wonder, after all Prent has worked in the studio with bands such as the Scorpions, 3 Doors Down, Def Leppard, and Within Temptation.

For singer Nic Maeder, BANG! is not only his second album with Gotthard, but also the convincing proof that he belongs in the band, that he has become one of them and his voice and his qualities as a songwriter are indispensable.

The fans and collectors are not the only ones to be happy: Apart from a standard jewel case, the album will be presented in a classy digi-pak version, with two bonus tracks and also on vinyl.

-L.R.S. Debut On The Way

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of L.R.S.’ debut Album DOWN TO THE CORE on March 21 in Europe and March 25 in North America.

L.R.S. stands for the new Melodic Rock musical alliance between singer Tommy La Verdi (21 Guns), guitarist Josh Ramos (The Storm, Hardline), and drummer Michael Shotton (Von Groove, Airtime). Started initially as a way to bring back to the public the amazing vocal talent of Tommy LaVerdi, a singer which came to the attention of the fans on the fabulous 21 Guns debut album SALUTE in 1992, the whole project morphed into a power band trio when two other well known musicians: guitar player Josh Ramos and drummer Michael Shotton were brought into the picture by the album producer Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline).

The writing sessions were fast and steady, with Del Vecchio managing all contributions from the band members — who lived in different places — and offering a number of his own writings and co-writings to the band, which was anyway able to develop a distinctive Melodic Rock sound in the tradition of Journey / The Storm, with hints of Canadian AOR — think mid ’80s Triumph. Recording sessions happened for the most part in Somma Lombardo, Italy during the spring of 2013, with the musicians getting along extremely well and creating a spontaneous camaraderie which contributed a lot to the success of the sessions.

“I respected a lot both Josh and Michael before starting the album and it was actually very sad to leave each other after we finished recording and filming the videos,” said Tommy La Verdi, while Michael Shotton added “It was like we had been playing in a band for years!” “I had the opportunity to try different styles and moods and incorporate elements of my past musical experiences in The Storm and Hardline — I was very glad to be involved in this,” concludes Josh Ramos.

The resulting album DOWN TO THE CORE is now finally ready to be unleashed to the public. With soaring vocals from LaVerdi, a superb vocalist who comes back into the well deserved spotlight and some exquisite guitar playing from Ramos, this is an album not to be missed and an AOR highlight for early 2014!

-Tuomas Holopainen’s Solo Album Details Revealed

Nightwish song composer and keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen will be releasing his first solo album this spring via Nuclear Blast.

The album will be based on writer/illustrator Don Rosa’s graphic novel “The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck,” which tells the life story of Scrooge from his early years in 19th Century Scotland and follows him in his worldly adventures through the 1950s. When Holopainen read the story nearly 20 years ago, its immense depth, detail, wit, and emotional power resonated with him instantly. While the initial spark of creating a soundtrack for the graphic novel came to him in 1999, the idea took 14 years to come to fruition.

Recorded from August to October 2013 at Angel Studios in London plus various locations around Scotland and Finland, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SCROOGE will include elements of the classical and folk genres in the vein of Vaughan Williams, Michael Nyman, James Newton Howard, and Enya. The album will feature artwork by Don Rosa.

Pip Williams — who collaborated with Tuomas on the Nightwish albums ONCE (2004), DARK PASSION PLAY (2007), and IMAGINAERUM (2012) — will once again assist with orchestral arrangements for THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SCROOGE.

The album will feature four lead vocalists: Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela, Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica, Johanna Iivanainen, and Alan Reid.

Musical guests include: The London Orchestra, the Metro Voices choir from London, Nightwish’s Troy Donockley (uilleann pipes, low whistles, bodhran), Mikko Iivanainen (guitars, banjo), Teho Majamäki (didgeridoo), Jon Burr (harmonica), and Dermot Crehan (solo violin).

AFM Records To Release Extensive Anniversary Edition Of Clawfinger Classic Album!

Twenty years after its original release, preparations started for the ultimate anniversary edition of Clawfinger’s classic album DEAF DUMB BLIND, one of the most important crossover albums of the 1990s. DEAF DUMB BLIND was turned into DEAFER DUMBER BLINDER (which can be taken as a promise considering content of the extensive re-issue):

CD 1: Original Album DEAF DUMB BLIND
CD 2: THE BEST OF B-SIDES (17 tracks)
CD 3: THE BEST OF DEMOS (20 tracks)
DVD LIVE IN WOODSTOCK + Documentary, MTV Specials, & more!

DEAFER DUMBER BLINDER will be released on March 7.

The band comments:

Baard Torstensen:
“None of us would have thought in the early Nineties that we would live our dream for almost two decades, travel the world and play for millions of people on three continents (Europe, America, Asia). Our anniversary box DEAFER DUMBER BLINDER reflects pretty much what Clawfinger is all about. Enjoy the unreleased demo tracks from early days up ’til 2005, a bunch of good B-sides, the classics from DEAF DUMB BLIND, and have fun with a live DVD from Woodstock Festival Poland where we played in front of more than 100,000 people back in 2009. This DVD also contains bonus material. (Two Scandinavian documentaries, festival clips, ‘MTV Most Wanted’).”

Zak Tell:
“DEAFER DUMBER BLINDER, the last and the tastiest piece of chocolate in the box is coming your way. It’s a treat so sweet you just can’t resist it. Demos, B-sides, Live footage, photos, the story of Clawfinger’s humble beginning, and more. This sucker comes with material no one has ever seen or heard before and it will be in stores shortly so be sure to keep your ears and eyes open and scream your heart out when it arrives. The kings are dead, long live the kings.”

Jocke Skog:
“We’ve gone through a lot of stuff to make this a box worth owning. It’s a tad late for an anniversary box since we released the first one back in 1993, but in this era where everything is online, it doesn’t matter that much. Enjoy! I know I will.”

-Red Tide Rising Debuts On Billboard Magazine’s Heatseeker Charts With THE RISING

DENVER, CO — Young Colorado-based modern hard rockers Red Tide Rising have debuted on Billboard magazine’s Heatseeker’s Chart at #3 with THE RISING, in the album’s first week of release.

The Death Box Records / Vanity Music Group release, recorded in the last half of 2013, THE RISING was produced by Mike McAree (engineer for In This Moment) and Jeff Kanan (Kelly Clarkson, Madonna, Randy Jackson, Staind, Rick Rubin, and others). The album’s 13 tracks reflect the work of a band — some of whom are still in their teens — working on a maturity level far beyond their actual years. “The song ‘2:13’ was an older track from when we did the INFERNO sessions. It didn’t make it onto that disc but it’s a great song so we wanted to include it this time,” relates guitarist Andrew Whiteman. “‘The Otherside’ was one of the first songs we wrote for the album that we all participated in, and one of the first using MIDI for us as well. ‘Cold’ is one of my favorite tracks off the record. It has a nice slow boil to it that makes it such a cool track (no pun intended). And finally, ‘The Rising’ is our anthem. It’s all about what we believe in as a band and working together to achieve greatness.”

“We are extremely honored and humbled to be charting on Billboard for the first time,” says Whiteman. “Thank you to everyone who has supported us to make this goal a reality. We look forward to having continued success in the charts and on the road!”

Red Tide Rising will tour throughout the winter into the spring, in both headlining and bigger support slots.

-Lost Society: New Album Details Revealed!

Lost Society, one of the most promising up-and-coming Finnish bands of our time, has released the details to their upcoming album TERROR HUNGRY. “Lost Society is back, and we’re angrier than ever,” commented guitarist/vocalist Samy Elbanna. “The new album TERROR HUNGRY is a full on thrash album from start to finish, with a darker and even more aggressive feel to it! It has the signature elements that make up Lost Society and we’ve put in even more groove riffage, more mind blistering guitar shredding, and some of the fastest stuff we’ve ever done on it! Look out, this one’s gonna be faster, louder and we’re more pissed off than ever!”

TERROR HUNGRY was produced by Nino Laurenne (Amorphis, Ensiferum, Lordi) at the renowned Sonic Pump studios (Finntroll, Sonata Arctica, Omnium Gatherum). The artwork was created by Jan Meininghaus (Bolt Thrower, Sick Of It All, U.D.O.). Expect to see the release of TERROR HUNGRY in both digital and physical formats on April 1 (North America) and April 4 (Europe) via Nuclear Blast Records.

Artist Jan Meininghaus states about the album cover:

“I was asked to do Lost Society’s new album cover and first of all, I had to face the fact that I had to follow their debut album’s art that was created by the legendary Ed Repka; one of the true heroes of my own thrash metal days. So I decided to go a different way and create the band’s cover idea in a much darker and less cartoony mood than the debut. Lost Society’s musical style and their approach to metal is very ’80s Bay Area to me, so I thought it might be fun to paint something that might have been on one of those record covers these days. I listened to Lost Society and my old Exodus, Testament, and Forbidden vinyls and it was a blast to come up with TERROR HUNGRY artwork!”

The track list of TERROR HUNGRY reads as follows:

1. Spurgatory
2. Game Over
3. Attaxic
4. Lethal Pleasure
5. Terror Hungry
6. Snowroad Blowout
7. Tyrant Takeover
8. Overdosed Brain
9. Thrashed Reality
10. F.F.E.
11. Brewtal Awakening
12. Mosh It Up
13. Wasted After Midnight
14. You Can’t Stop Rock ‘N’ Roll

Lost Society’s debut FAST LOUD DEATH displayed a true old-school thrash vibe in 2013 and managed to amaze press and scene veterans such as Kreator, Tankard, Destruction, or Testament alike. Just check out these video clips from that very record to see what all the hype is about:

-Total Metal Festival: A Surprising Tickets Cost!

Starting from February 3 the pre-sales of the next edition of the TMF will be available with an “anticrisis” price!

The organizers of the Total Metal Open Air Festival announced that starting from the next February 3 at 11:00 a.m. the event tickets will be available on the Ticketone ( http://www.ticketone.it/ ), Bookingshow ( http://www.bookingshow.it/ ), and Metaltix ( http://www.metaltix.com/ ) networks.

There will be one unique ticket that will be valid for both days of the festival which, remember, will be held on July 19 and 20, 2014 at the public pools in the city of Bitonto near Bari, Italy. Despite the already confirmed participation of bands like Annihilator, Moonspell, and Death Angel, and the imminent announcement of other high-caliber artists, the ticket price will be only 40 euros and not only will include two entire days of music and attractions, but also the possibility to enjoy a free camping area set up for the occasion! (More info about the campsite on http://www.totalmetalfestival.com/ .)

The production manager Fabrizio Fiorito states: “This year we are preparing an edition which will be far superior to all prior ones for both the number and quality of the bands and for all the care that we are having for the non-musical entertainments of the festival. A highest ticket cost was lawful and justified, but just because of the major change that we are doing we would like to introduce the ‘new’ TMF to as much people as possible. Certainly we’re sacrificing part of the possible income, but, with foresight, we look to the future and we are confident that a low ticket will bring us a lot more people and then will make the event even more famous and popular.”

If you love metal and fun, therefore you just have to wait the February 3, buy your ticket for the TMF and save it jealously in a safe until next summer!

LAS VEGAS — Burton Cummings ( http://www.burtoncummings.com/ ), legendary rocker and former front man for The Guess Who, jammed to sold-out audiences on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 at The Orleans Hotel and Casino.

Cummings and his explosive five-piece band were rewarded with numerous standing ovations at The Orleans Showroom. Many Canadians flocked to the shows to support their fellow countryman and Canadian Music Hall Of Fame inductee.

Cummings warmed up with a similarly sold out solo performance Jan. 15 at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert. Cummings wrapped his busier than ever 2013 touring slate with a batch of East Coast dates in mid-November, then launched 2014 with his first-ever headline shows in Las Vegas.

Years after Cummings joined The Guess Who as keyboardist and lead vocalist, the charismatic performer is still rocking his best loved classics, “These Eyes,” “American Woman,” “Undun,” “No Time,” and “Share The Land,” and his renowned solo hit “Stand Tall” — among countless others — on tour every year across the US and his native Canada, where the legendary band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame.

Enthusiastic, creative, and fully embracing social media to stay in day to day touch with several generations of fans, Cummings is encouraging his loyal fans to share photos and videos from all of his concerts on his new real-time website.

Guitarist Tony Asta comments: “Battlecross is very excited to hit the road with Protest The Hero! They seem like a very successful, humble group of guys who don’t take things too seriously yet are serious about the business — a good role model for all modern bands and we can’t wait to get to know them on the road. Oh yeah and they’re shredders! Being direct support is a huge honor and we won’t let anyone down. This is a very unique tour package and we can’t wait to play to new crowds as well as expose some of our fans to bands they may not have seen yet. See you all in the road this spring!”

Battlecross’ latest effort, WAR OF WILL, saw the band on the road as a part of 2013’s Rockstar Mayhem Festival and debuted at #134 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, #118 on the Top Current Albums chart, #2 on the Heatseeker chart, #15 on the Current Hard Music chart, #16 on the Hard Music Overall chart, and #32 on the Independent Albums chart. “Metallica-approved thrashers… catchy and direct-the secret behind Battlecross songs is that they’re short and not so sweet.” — Revolver Magazine

“The overall result falls somewhere between the sheer aggression of traditional thrash and In Flames’ sense of humanity, with nods to the technical ecstasy of metal’s founding fathers along the way.” — Metal Hammer Magazine (UK)

“Battlecross sound like the bastard offspring of Kreator, Children Of Bodom, and DragonForce… metal fans will lap this up like a cat with a bowl of cream.” — Big Cheese Magazine (UK)

“The level of musical and compositional progression here is startling, to be quite honest… The effect as a whole is energetic and fist-pumping to the extreme, ushering in a beacon of hope for American metal in 2013.” — Zero Tolerance Magazine (UK)

“Pound for pound, the Detroit thrashers deliver one of the most eye popping, headbanging, horn throwing live shows in heavy metal. 10/10” — Outburn

“Whoever said that the metal genre has become stale and boring has clearly never heard of Michigan’s Battlecross!” — New-Transcendence.com

“All told, WAR OF WILL is a compact and exhilarating experience from Battlecross, who are able to capture the feeling of old-school metal without needing to prop themselves up with nostalgia, instead allowing their love of the genre to shine through with every chugging riff, every solo, and every crazed fist pump.” — Allmusic.com

-Vornth’s debut self-titled release is out this week via Iron Tyrant. Hype: “There’s no other way to put it: Sweden’s Vornth deliver Ultimate Heavy Metal. With a history that stretches back to the dawn of the millennium as well their members’ deep roots in the underground, Vornth at last deliver their debut album, simply titled VORNTH. The 12-track, 57-minute monster is at once warmly familiar yet distinctly refreshing. Far from a rote ‘retro’ act, Vornth cobble together all that was great about ’80s speed metal and thrash, as well as proto-black metal sounds, and proceed to unleash epic after headbanging, fist-pumping epic. There’s violence & force, for sure, but there’s also keen attention to nuance and dynamics here across VORNTH, the quartet absolutely hysteric in their deliver yet locked-in and tighter than even the most tech-savvy metal bands. Cloaked hellfire, choking on sulfur, yet mindful of the eternal, evil power of total HEAVY METAL, the coven of Vornth recall the likes of classic Razor, Destruction, Exciter, Kreator, and Sacrifice whilst sounding totally, eternally Vornth. Spit black fire!!! Track list: “2740°,” “Evil Blood,” “Rapid Death,” “Rip Rip Rip,” “Darkness And Steel,” “Spit Black Fire,” “Devil,” “Bleed,” “Metal Skies,” “Axemurder,” “Death’s Horse,” “Grave Of The Living.” See http://www.facebook.com/Vornth , http://www.irontyrant.net/ , and http://www.facebook.com/pages/Iron-Tyrant/178434902193875 for more.
