-earMusic & Eagle Rock Entertainment To Release Deep Purple Limited Edition NOW WHAT?! Gold Edition 2CD And Boxed Set On January 21, 2014

Chart-Breaking Album Now Enhanced With Bonus Live CD THE NOW WHAT?! LIVE TAPES — Over One Hour Of Live Music

NEW YORK, NY — NOW WHAT?!, the 19th studio album from Deep Purple, reached Gold Status in Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, and Poland, not to mention the fact the band has made a very much deserved return to the British Top 20 for the first time in 20 years. To celebrate the success of the album and the support of one of the greatest fan bases known in rock history, NOW WHAT?! will be released on January 21, 2014 as a Golden Deluxe Edition. [MSRP $20.98 2CD, $59.98 Boxed set] The boxed set will be available exclusively via Amazon.

NOW WHAT?! Gold Edition 2CD, packaged in a luxurious gold cover, will also include two bonus songs on disc 1 (a stunning cover of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “It’ll Be Me,” and the rare B-side “First Sign Of Madness,” previously only available digitally and on the CD single “Vincent Price”), and an extra live disc. The bonus disc consists of over 70 minutes of unreleased live music recorded during the summer shows (THE NOW WHAT?! LIVE TAPES).

The live recordings show a band that still love to improvise like only few others can, changing the classic songs all the time and challenging themselves. Still, that magic sound is there, as if time could do nothing against it. In an era when live albums are too often not much more than a studio exercise, one cannot help admiring the musicianship and the groove coming out of the speakers, especially considering that the record shows exactly what came out of the amplifiers on those nights. Great care has been paid to present this extra disc in a stunning hi-fi quality, still preserving its authenticity.

The studio album and this exceptional live album are sold together with the inclusion of a brand new booklet to support the second disc, with notes by Ian Gillan.

THE NOW WHAT?! Boxed Set includes THE NOW WHAT?! LIVE TAPES, a DVD with a 20-minute interview, NOW WHAT?! THE SINGLES (“All The Time In The World,” “Vincent Price,” “Above And Beyond”), exclusive T-shirt (large), exclusive poster, and collectible sticker.

Steve Overland is back! A legend in his own lifetime. Is there anyone out there who is not familiar with his name? He has a history that goes way back into the late seventies, his first major recording was with the band Wildlife in 1980. After the demise of Wildlife Steve went on to form the cult British melodic rock band FM, a band that released many great albums throughout the eighties and nineties and more recently in 2013. Their popularity has always been at the forefront of British Hard Rock.

Steve originally teamed up with Escape Music to provide lead vocals for the BOSTON TRIBUTE album (ESM 081), singing “Amanda,” one of the album highlights. Steve also teamed up with Steve Morris of Heartland fame to record the much acclaimed Shadowman albums LAND OF THE LIVING (ESM 099), DIFFERENT ANGLES (ESM127), GHOST IN THE MIRROR (ESM179), and WATCHING OVER YOU (ESM224).

Steve has also fronted two releases by The Ladder, which is a dream come true for all fans of FM as the band is an extension of the great FM themselves. FUTURE MIRACLES (ESM109) was welcome by fans old and new and it was hailed by many as the best album of 2004. More recently SACRED (ESM149) is an album that hones the identity of The Ladder.

Steve’s first solo album BREAK AWAY (ESM170) had fans divided as it was so much different from his work with FM, but many grew to love it as it was something different from the norm. Steve gave us a more classic approach to melodic rock with DIAMOND DEALER (ESM198), with great songs that have feeling and depth. It’s now time for one of the finest starts to 2014 you could possible want to wish for, the album EPIC which is the brand new release from this famous vocalist. With Mike Slamer and Billy Greer of Kansas involved in the proceedings then we are in for a big big album. “Radio Radio” is one of the most radio-friendly tracks you could ever wish to hear and so easy on the ears. Rockers abound with “If Looks Could Kill,” “Rags To Riches,” and the awesome “Down Comes The Night.” It’s the quality of the songs and musicianship on this album that makes it so special and credit to Christian Wolff (Rob Moratti) who has also made this album so remarkable with his great guitar playing and song writing.

This is a perfect album from Steve, if you have a penchant for perfect harmonies, big guitars and soaring keyboards topped off with a top-notch production then look no further than this. A Classic — already!

Guests:
Billy Greer (Kansas / Seventh Key) – Background Vocals
Billy Trudel – Background Vocals
Fredrik Bergh – Additional Keys on “Liberate My Heart” and “Down Comes The Night”
Produced and arranged by Mike Slamer
co-produced by: Christian Wolff
Mixed and mastered by Mike Slamer at Shattered Studios, Valencia CA
Executive Producer: Khalil Turk for Escape Music ltd.

Specials: Lover Under Cover are back with a brand new album, hailing from Sweden this quartet combines elements of Coldspell, Last Autumns Dream, Treat, and many more great Scandinavian Rock bands.

The band was formed by Mikael Carlsson and they have already shaken the very foundations of melodic hard rock with their debut outing SET THE NIGHT ON FIRE (ESM246). Soaring harmonies, slick guitar solos, and plenty of keyboards feature in their sound and with a knack of producing infectious melodies they will have you begging for more.

This is their brand new album and these boys are ready to start 2014 with a bang. With a tight production from Martin Kronlund you can be sure of a very polished performance all round. Songs like “Into The Shadows,” “Miracle,” and “Crushing Stones” are all fantastic slabs of melodic hard rock, in fact there are no fillers to be found, just well structured melodic hard rock. This is a fine follow-up to their 2012 debut.

Lover Under Cover are a band to look out for in 2014 and if well crafted melodic rock of the highest order is what you crave for then this is an essential purchase.

-Cleveland Shock Jock/Music Journalist Chris Akin Finds “Little Victories” In Emotional New Memoir

CLEVELAND — The first book by infamous Cleveland shock jock/music journalist Chris Akin, “Little Victories: A Tale Of Divorce, Debauchery And Finding Happiness,” takes readers behind the façade and connects with the raw emotions that plagued a man on a year-long emotional roller coaster.

The story begins when Akin’s teenage sweetheart and wife of 23 years returns home from work and unexpectedly announces that she wants a divorce. The 344-page tome chronicles the year that follows, which includes ending a 12-year feud with his parents only to have his father pass away, a near-suicidal depression, and a final transformation into a stronger, healthier, and happier person.

“I didn’t decide to write a book as much as I just needed a place to vent,” Akin said. “With my wife gone, all my friends isolated away from me for years, and no relationship with my family for over a decade, I had no one to get this immense sadness out to except my laptop. So I wrote. I wrote novels on Facebook, but saved every day’s story of the pain I was feeling. Before long, the idea of following along into a book came to the forefront; not so much for releasing to the public, but as a way to capture the pain of things, give it a place, and quite literally close that proverbial chapter of my life.”

“Little Victories” is a real world, raw emotional look at a year that saw not only a shattering divorce, but a rebirth of a person who had spent his whole life raging against everyone, everything and who purposely pushed every button to come off as the most powerful person in any room. It profiles the victories as well as the defeats; some of which are so sickening in emotional scope that they will leave the reader questioning how Akin’s friends ever stuck around to see him through the tough times.

“If there’s anything I can say about my life, it’s that I’m surrounding by the single best core of friends in the world,” said Akin. “I regularly refer to them as ‘The Core 9.’ I try to explain them in terms that anyone can relate to, and the simplest way to put it is that these are the people that I would willingly let someone hack me up with a chainsaw Scarface-style to simply ensure they were safe. I also think that this collection of friends would do the same for me.”

For over 20 years, Akin has been a larger and louder than life character in the Cleveland media, beginning at the city’s largest free magazine, Scene. He then decided to take his media profile to the next level, starting his own magazine, Music’s Bottom Line, and venturing into the realm of radio where he would make a name for himself as one of the most feared radio hosts in Cleveland while hosting “The Metal Show” on Cleveland’s biggest radio station. Regularly in trouble with station management, but more beloved for their hard hitting style, “The Metal Show” took the Cleveland heavy metal scene by storm for well over a decade.

Still, Akin needed more, so he went to the internet where his rebellious ways could go unchallenged, joining “The Classic Metal Show” and converting the show from a mostly music program to a ferocious, attacking show that had no guilt about anything. Now, Akin is learning what it is like to be on the other side.

“I’ve interviewed over 1,000 rock stars in my life, and have always tried to get far more personal than anyone else out there,” he said. “I now understand ‘the dodge’ so many of these guys do. It’s hard enough to put your work out in public, but exposing every raw nerve, weakness, and vulnerability you have at your weakest possible moment is scary. Still, it’s that exposure that has already made this book a success for me. I stared my biggest faults in the face, made them public, and got stronger for doing so. Much like a band like Metallica, I truly feel like I’ve delivered my MASTER OF PUPPETS to the world. But unlike Metallica, I hope the criticism isn’t quite as biting.”

“Little Victories” is available in paperback and digital editions from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

-Submissions Now Open! Wacken Metal Battle Canada Returns! “One Band To Rule Them All”

Last year’s first ever Wacken Metal Battle Canada was witnessed to Toronto, ON’s epic power/death metal band Crimson Shadows not only winning the 2013 Canadian final but conquering the international final in Wacken, Germany where they performed in front of thousands unknown to their behemoth sound of metal. (Video of that champion set can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgAu_xzQAzM .)

With that great success and triumph for Canadian metal, Wacken Metal Battle Canada will be expanding across the country in 2014.

“We’re very pleased to announce that Metal Battle has been expanded to include Western Canada. Battles will happen in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver and we expect some quality submissions from those major cities to join Toronto and Montreal. Given the interest we received last year from the West, this expansion was inevitable. We’ve been working hard to overcome the geographical challenges — the result will be a bigger and better competition,” comments Wacken Metal Battle Canada organizer JJ Tartaglia.

One Canadian band will rule them all and represent the nation with highest honor at this year’s 2014 international battle at the world’s most prestigious metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany where they will join the list of Canadian heavyweights such as Voivod, Exciter, Razor, Annihilator, Anvil, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches Of Bloods, Despised Icon, and Danko Jones who have performed at the festival in years past.

Canadian battle rounds will be judged by a panel of local music industry representatives during the months of March, April, and May with the national final being held on June 7, 2014 in Toronto, ON with the following band representation.

• 1 finalist from Vancouver, BC
• 1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off)
• 2 finalists from Toronto, ON
• 1 finalist from Montreal, QC

Submissions are now open as of December 5, 2013 and will be closed on January 31, 2014 with bands selected to be announced at a later date in February.

-Jesters Of Destiny’s Classic Debut To See Re-mastered Vinyl Release

According to Wikipedia and Allmusic.com (and even a Creem Metal interview from the band’s own time), Jesters Of Destiny were quite possibly the first “Alternative Metal” band. If you were to ask the band’s founders (and only consistent members throughout their four-year duration — Ray Violet and Bruce Duff), they would no doubt reply with a question: “What exactly is Alternative Metal, anyway?” Ektro Records attempts to answer that question with a re-mastered vinyl release of the band’s FUN AT THE FUNERAL debut. Set for international release on February 21st, the track listing to Jesters Of Destiny’s FUN AT THE FUNERAL is as follows:

1. Diggin’ That Grave
2. God Told Me To
3. Love Theme From Jesters On Parade
4. I Hate Bruce
5. End Of Time
6. Attack Of The Jesters
7. Incubus
8. Happy Times
9. Crimson Umbrella
10. Love Dust
11. Ray’s Theme

Such concerns, however, were not on the minds of Violet and Duff, when in 1984, they were in the midst of a recording project attempting to come up commercial (as in jingles) material. Violet was the staff engineer at Dawnbreaker studio (built by Seals & Crofts during their heyday a decade earlier, and ran at the time by their ex-manager, a figure in the Baha’i Faith). Church members occupied the studio compound, but during the day, it was rented out by Leon Sylvers (producing contemporary R&B with Violet at the board) and at night, Ray, Bruce, and friends had free rein of the place to make whatever music they wanted.

Among the music they recorded were two songs that seemed to hang together: “End Of Time” and “Diggin’ That Grave.” “Grave” was a riff, groove, and lyrical idea Ray had been kicking back and forth with Bruce for some time — at Dawnbreaker, it came fully to life; and “Time” was a heavy prog number Bruce wanted to flesh out while the studio was at hand. The two musicians decided that these two songs had zero commercial potential for their jingle project, but belonged together nonetheless, and with that as a template, Ray and Bruce decided to form a band. Jesters Of Destiny were soon rehearsing in the full-court basketball facility next door to the studio in the Dawnbreaker compound.

By fall of ’84, “End Of Time” appeared on METAL MASSACRE V, part of an ongoing series used by Metal Blade Records to introduce new bands to an international fan base. Also on board with their early recordings were Voivod, Overkill, Fates Warning, Metal Church, and Hellhammer (before they turned into Celtic Frost). A look at this lineup shows the Jesters weren’t alone in thinking it was time metal ventured outside the safety zone.

During ’85, Jesters Of Destiny began to perform in clubs around Los Angeles and Orange County, and weathering what would be an unending series of lineup changes around Bruce on vocals/bass and Ray on guitar/keys. (Five drummers and five lead guitarists went through the ranks.) Throughout the year, and amidst the first several lineup changes, the pair recorded FUN AT THE FUNERAL.

With completed masters in tow, Metal Blade was approached, as they’d already issued “End Of Time.” They liked the album and agreed to put it out, but perhaps as a nod to the band’s alternative take on heavy music, decided to put the LP out on a brand-new imprint, Dimension Records. Not only did this indicate that FUN AT THE FUNERAL wasn’t a typical heavy record, but also avoided the outrage the standard Metal Blade aficionado would experience when a pop song like “Happy Times” or an instrumental interlude like “Love Theme From Jesters On Parade” would pop up.

Released in 1986, FUN AT THE FUNERAL received a wide range of critical appraisal. From the press reviews, back in the day…

Spin: “Perfectly executed punkadelic glam-bop with a healthy dose of metallic insolence. Working within this context, the Jesters thumb their noses at insanity, aphrodisiacs, Pollyanna grooviness, and the occasional suicide.”

L.A. Weekly: “Modern metal psychedelia whose deranged outlook is fine-tuned by way of nods to such opposing influences a Black Sabbath and the Electric Prunes.”

Guitar Player: “Magnificently wacky and roots-true… definitely a cut apart from any other ’80s band.”

Kerrang: “Delightfully different… (a) mysterious mixture of musical influences from a number of bands you just can’t think of. Weird, but strangely appealing. 4Ks for… I don’t quite know what.”

And of course, the definitive statement, from Rockpool: “It is, quite honestly, the worst record I’ve heard all year.”

The band continued to shift drummers and guitarist in and out of the lineup, and during the promotional life of the album shared stages with Jane’s Addiction, the Dickies, Flaming Lips, L.A. Guns, Jetboy, the Fuzztones, and Thelonious Monster, demonstrating both how wide the Jesters’ style could venture, and how diverse the California scene was at the time. Nowadays, most histories boil Cali hard rock down to the emerging thrash scene growing out of Ruthie’s Inn in Berkeley, and the hair metal coming out of the Hollywood clubs such as Gazzarri’s. (Of course, the Jesters played both).

With not quite enough songs written for the second album, the Jesters opted to record an all-covers EP as a follow-up. IN A NOSTALGIC MOOD was met with perhaps even more confusion than FUN AT THE FUNERAL. For their ’87 year-end summation, Kerrang declared the Jesters version of Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral” to be the 4th best cover of the year, and their version of Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” to be the 4th worst.

By ’88, Metal Blade dropped Jesters Of Destiny. Enough labels passed on the demos for the by-now-written album NO LAUGHING MATTER that the band chose to quietly throw in the towel. Of course, the story doesn’t end there. In 2001, Ektro Records in Finland reissued FUN AT THE FUNERAL with a load of bonus material, including a number of the NO LAUGHING MATTER demos. In 2012, Full Contact issued a single featuring Ektro’s most prolific artists, Circle, performing two FUN AT THE FUNERAL songs, “End Of Time” and “God Told Me To,” with Bruce and Ray both onboard. Now, Ektro/Full Contact is issuing a near-exact replica of the original vinyl album, with the expected improved mastering and better graphics reproductions. Meanwhile, Bruce and Ray have returned to the studio to work on a brand-new album of Jesters Of Destiny material. Has the world caught up? Will the Jesters be more easily understood in 2014? Most likely not.
