-Latter Day Dio Classic, MAGICA, To Get Deluxe CD Treatment

As long time fans can attest, the quality of Dio’s studio albums never wavered throughout the group’s near 30-year career. Case in point, the fan favorite/concept album, MAGICA, which featured Ronnie James Dio’s one-of-a-kind vocals and the return of guitarist Craig Goldy. The album spawned such metal classics as “Fever Dreams,” “Turn To Stone,” and “Lord Of The Last Day,” and has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide — largely on word of mouth alone. One small problem — the original 2,000 CD version has been out of print for years, and has become increasingly hard to find. But to the delight of Dio fans worldwide, MAGICA will be getting a makeover — on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 as Niji Entertainment Group will be issuing the 2-CD MAGICA Deluxe Edition.

A breakdown of what will be included on this two CD set is as follows:

CD 1 will contain the full album.

1. Discovery
2. Magica Theme
3. Lord Of The Last Day
4. Fever Dreams
5. Turn To Stone
6. Feed My Head
7. Eriel
8. Challis
9. As Long As It’s Not About Love
10. Losing My Insanity
11. Otherworld
12. Magica – Reprise
13. Lord Of The Last Day – Reprise

CD 2 will contain “The Magica Story” (narrated by Ronnie James Dio) and the bonus track “Annica,” which was only available as a Japanese bonus track along with “Electra” (which was planned for MAGICA 2 and 3) and six, never before released Official Live Bootleg tracks from 2000/2001.

1. The Magica Story (Narrated By Ronnie James Dio)
2. Annica (Japanese Only Bonus Track)
3. Electra (Recorded for MAGICA 2 & 3)
4. Feed My Head (Official Live Bootleg)
5. Fever Dreams (Official Live Bootleg)
6. Turn To Stone (Official live Bootleg)
7. Lord Of The Last Day (Official Live Bootleg)
8. As Long As It’s Not about Love (Official Live Bootleg)
9. Losing My Insanity (Official Live Bootleg)

Also included in the CD set will be deluxe packaging and a deluxe booklet (which will include the original MAGICA tour dates and a set list), as well as such bonus inserts — including “The Magica Story” — and a Ronnie James Dio postcard.

And the accolades surrounding MAGICA continue all these years later:

“Since I played such a major role in how MAGICA was created, it became one of my most proudest Dio moments and an experience I shall never forget!” – Craig Goldy (Dio, Dio Disciples)

“MAGICA is an album I know Ronnie was extremely proud of. Epic is a word that I often use to describe it to people!” – Simon Wright (Dio, Dio Disciples)

“MAGICA was an extremely important album to Ronnie James Dio” – Eddie Trunk, VH1 Classic’s “That Metal Show”

“With this Deluxe Edition of MAGICA, we are reminded just how much Dio really meant — to all of us.” – Mick Wall, Legendary Writer/Radio host

Soon, Dio fans worldwide will get the opportunity to experience the mighty MAGICA as they’ve never done before.

-Avantasia: Hit The German Charts At #2!

While the band are preparing to hit the road and bring the biggest show in the band’s history to the stages around the globe (featured guests will be Michael Kiske, Bob Catley, Eric Martin, Ronnie Atkins, Amanda Somerville, Thomas Rettke, Olli Hartmann and Tobias of course) we have been informed that the new Avantasia album THE MYSTERY OF TIME is breaking all records in the history of Avantasia. Having sold more than twice as many copies as any previous Avantasia album in the first week of its release, THE MYSTERY OF TIME has rocketed straight to #2 of the official German Media Control album charts. For the first time Avantasia has also made it to the Top 10 in Finland, not to mention making it to the Top 10 in Sweden again, while none of the previous albums had made it there. Also, the album made it to the Top 10 of the English Rock Charts for the first time in the history of Avantasia. First chart positions read as follows (other countries will follow shortly):

Germany #2
Sweden #9
Finland #9
Austria #11
Norway #19
England #6 (Rock, #97 international)
France #51
Netherlands #85

In Japan the album went in at #17 of the international artists album charts.

Tobias has sent us the following statement:

“To all fans, thank you all for your support! A lot of amazing musicians have worked their asses off to make THE MYSTERY OF TIME a timeless piece of art. Is it Heavy Metal? Is it Classic Hard Rock? Is it Epic Metal? Is it Rock? The answer to all of those questions is ‘yes, it is!’ It is all of that. I’d call it a piece of music that I put together being nothing but a fanboy myself! It reflects my personal taste, nothing else! I am really proud and thankful. And I also wanna thank everybody who’ve helped me put it together. Now we are getting ready for the tour and Jesus Christ, this show will be massive! Tomorrow I am gonna meet the rest of the guys to rehearse and bring the Metal Opera on the road again!!!!!!!! Playing three hours might be a challenge, but we have to cover six albums, so it would be even more of a challenge to just play two hours and pick the right songs. What I can say?! We’ll play a lot of the METAL OPERA 1 & 2 and pretty much all of the new album… Plus the highlights of THE SCARECROW, THE WICKED SYMPHONY and ANGEL OF BABYLON. A lot of people kept asking if we do the whole show in all countries, I have to admit: We can’t do the full three hours at the festivals, we can’t play a 15-minute track at festivals! Impossible! So, it will be 90 minutes at festivals only, but we give our best nevertheless… Thank you all for your support and see you on the road!!! Tobi”

THE MYSTERY WORLD TOUR will kick off next Friday in Mons, Belgium.

The special three hours shows read as follows:

13.04. Switzerland, Pratteln, Z7 (sold out)
14.04. Switzerland, Pratteln, Z7
16.04. Italy, Milano, Alcatraz
18.04. Germany, Ludwigsburg, Arena

-The Golden Voice Of Rock — Jorn — Is Back With A New Original Album TRAVELLER To Be Released In June On Frontiers

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of a brand new — all original — studio album Jorn – TRAVELLER on June 11 in North America and June 14 in Europe.

Considered one of the greatest legends in rock, and by many as the best male rock singer of the millennium, Jorn Lande never seems to stop producing music, and is back with yet another slab of classic first division heavy rock. The brand new album TRAVELLER is definitely a suitable title to fit this gifted and creative Viking’s extreme productivity.

During his almost 30 year long career his albums have sold millions. He managed to release close to 40 albums with various bands/projects in the past decades, and TRAVELLER is his eighth studio album under the Jorn banner. Some say he has passed his successors by his gift of being versatile, and ability to not get stuck in the political frames of the music business. A true independent “freebird” hammering his legacy in stone as he goes, with a band of grounded and solid craftsmen to back up his hurricane force voice.

This album represents the first product of the pairing of Jorn Lande and the new Jorn guitarist Trond Holter (Wig Wam, Dream Police). The result is eleven new songs encompassing a variety of moods and styles, with Lande’s voice shining through memorable anthems, backed by wonderful grooves and tightly-executed Classic and Melodic Heavy Metal. “This album has all the elements of the Jorn legacy,” says Lande. “It is heavy, but still very melodic and experimental, and it really rocks! As usual we haven’t spent much time analyzing the material before recording it, this is an album about life, doom and death reflecting on what I know and thoughts about what I don’t.”

Being one of the most productive artists of his time, Jorn makes sure that the fans won’t have to wait long for the rock!

TRAVELLER includes the following tracks:
Cancer Demon
Window Maker
Make Your Engine Scream
Legend Man
Carry The Black
Rev On
The Man Who Was King

You can sample four songs from the new album following the link below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmALY0tRwC8

Willy Bendiksen: Drums

Jimmy Iversen: Guitar

Lacrimas Profundere: ANTIADORE Album Update

A lot of bands have failed in the tricky undertaking to combine melancholy and heaviness, but not Lacrimas Profundere, who pull it off on ANTIADORE without breaking a sweat. The band stayed true to their somber roots on this album, but has elevated the characteristic sound to new heights, thus even exceeding their previous masterworks such as THE GRANDIOSE NOWHERE or FILTHY NOTES FOR FROZEN HEARTS. ANTIADORE is heavy, melancholic, and touches upon the hidden feelings in the darkest corners of the soul. Ballads like “Still In Need” or “Head Held High” meet heavy breakers like “Abandon” or the punching “What I’m Not.” The band revolving around Oliver Schmid presents itself with a newfound energy and offer their most diverse and mature album! -Fear Factory Brings THE INDUSTRIALIST To North American Venues

Fear Factory will embark on their first full headlining tour in support of 2012’s conceptual mega-album THE INDUSTRIALIST. Performances begin this week, with the tour set to visit 38 cities throughout the US and Canada. The tour represents the first live dates by the band on American soil in nearly a year. The World Industrialist tour will feature support from Hate Eternal and Kobra And The Lotus.

Speaking with Full Metal Jackie, vocalist Burton C. Bell describes THE INDUSTRIALIST as, “a very deliberate album and one that came about very naturally to us. There is something so tight about the album. Focus is the one thing that is on this record that doesn’t really appear on any of our other records. The focus of the music, the sounds, the aggression and the concept. Everything had its purpose and we knew exactly what we were doing and what we had to do.”

THE INDUSTRIALIST wraps itself around a tale written by vocalist Burton C. Bell. While the “story” was spelt out more expansively in the deluxe book edition of the album (which also featured two additional songs), the plot is rooted both in forward-thinking science fiction and contemporary events. Prior to its June 5, 2012 release, excitement was already building for the album — the second from the reunited nucleus of Bell and guitarist Dino Cazares. “There isn’t a record that I’m looking forward to more than THE INDUSTRIALIST,” said Revolver editor Brandon Geist. “North America is chompin’ at the bit to get an ear full of new Fear Factory,” added Sirius/XM Metal Director Jose Mangin. “Recharger,” the album’s lead single premiered on April 24 and within 24 hours had over 100,000 listens.

Produced by Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly), and mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Machine Head), THE INDUSTRIALIST features additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy) and artwork by Anthony Clarkson (Devin Townsend). It is Fear Factory at its most confident and passionate; the band bringing every sonic weapon in its arsenal to the fore. Revisiting and refining the sweeping melodies and unforgettable songwriting that will forever distinguish Fear Factory from all others, the sound and creative storyline of THE INDUSTRIALIST immediately carved itself a spot on the short list of Best Metal Albums of 2012. The album debuted on the Billboard Top 40 for its initial release week. The record maintained the Top position on CMJ’s Hard Rock chart for three consecutive weeks. It was a resident of the Top 10 for eight weeks and ended 2012 on their Top Year chart at position seven.

The World Industrialist Tour will find Fear Factory performing fan favorites plus select songs from THE INDUSTRIALIST and 2010’s MECHANIZE. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster and all venue box offices. The video for “The Industrialist,” directed by James Zahn, as well as a special tour video by Dino Cazares can be viewed at this location:

-Assignment Signs With Mausoleum Records

Germany’s progressive metallers Assignment have signed a two-album deal with Mausoleum Records. The group’s debut album, INSIDE OF THE MACHINE, is scheduled for a release this summer. The new album is a conceptual masterpiece including Robin Beck, Michael Bormann (ex-Jaded Heart, Bonfire), Mats Leven (ex-Malmsteen, Addagio), and Carsten Kaiser (ex-Angel Dust) on vocals.

Assignment are: Goran Panic (guitars), Gert Sprick (keyboards), Heiko Maag (bass), and Sven Pollkötter (drums).

Already combining various influences like Queensryche and Fates Warning, but also adding segments in the styles of Ayreon or early Pain Of Salvation, the band is hoping to secure a permanent record deal in the near future. Fans can expect hard-edged riffs, catchy hooks, and unexpected turnovers in more than 70 minutes running time — including a special bonus track cover version of Meat Loaf’s “Nowhere Fast” and special guest appearance of Bernie Versailles (Redemption) on lead guitar.

Assignment stands for music without boundaries, as our musical influences are spread over the whole Rock and Metal genre. From Death Metal to Progressive Rock but having always the focus on the melodies and arrangements. Therefore, we call our style ART METAL!

-Iron Tongue: Exclusive Track Premiere Hosted By The Obelisk

Today the rock ‘n’ doom derelicts at The Obelisk bring forth “7 Days,” the first official track premiere from Arkansas southern rock rabble-rousers Iron Tongue. The tune comes by way of the band’s forthcoming THE DOGS HAVE BARKED, THE BIRDS HAVE FLOWN debut. Produced by renowned audio sage Billy Anderson (Melvins, Sleep, Neurosis, etc.) at Iron Tongue guitarist Jason Tedford’s Wolfman Studios, the seven track offering is set for release via Neurot Recordings on May 27 in Europe and May 28 in North America.

Fronted by Chris “C.T.” Terry, the founding front man of sludge legion Rwake, Iron Tongue formed when a group of veteran players with diverse musical backgrounds found a common interest in the need to get down and dirty and way, way gone. Featuring C.T. alongside guitarists Jason Tedford and Mark Chiaro, bassist Andy Warr, drummer Stan James, keyboardist JR Top and backing vocalist Stephanie Smittle, Iron Tongue offer up a thick, soulful blend of girthy, heavy-amped, blues-based rock. Iron Tongue aren’t singing of magical moonlit escapades. These are songs of true hurt, regret and despair reminiscent of everything from the proto-metal stomp of Blue Cheer and Grand Funk to the darkest hours of Kiss, Deep Purple, Buddy Guy and ‘Skynyrd.

Comments The Obelisk: “…the album… makes no bones about establishing its own context and working on its own merits in establishing an atmosphere and constructing a genuine sonic breadth out of slow riffs, organic production, Southern woes and heaviness that goes beyond the tonal. As a piece of the whole, I think ‘7 Days’ represents these aspects well.”

Adds Stan James of the number: “‘7 Days’ is one of the first songs we wrote when we started… It’s one of our favorites and we’re glad to give everybody a sample of the album before it comes out. We’ll have another up for everybody soon!”

Hear “7 Days” at this location now:

In related news, Iron Tongue will bring the power of the riff to the stage with a handful of local shows beginning April 26 with additional dates to be announce in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Iron Tongue Live Dates:

-Cynthesis: Prog Metal Supergroup To Release Second Part Of Dystopian Trilogy

Sensory Records this week confirms the full details for the pending second album from Pleasanton, California-based progressive metal outfit Cynthesis, as the final parts to this new opus have fallen into place.

Cynthesis reunites three of the original members of top-tier extreme progressive band Zero Hour — brothers Jasun and Troy Tipton (guitars and bass, respectively, both also of Abnormal Thought Patterns) and vocalist Erik Rosvold, along with Enchant drummer Sean Flanagan. While maintaining much of the tech/metal influence of Zero Hour, with Cynthesis the members’ ambitious technical prowess blends seamlessly and organically into the grand atmospheres and melodic passages enveloping their approach, demonstrates the more melodic side of Jasun Tipton’s songwriting.

Formed in 2010, Cynthesis released their massive debut album DEEVOLUTION through Sensory in April of 2011, causing celebration within the prog community with these members aligning, and in some cases realigning, their talents. Following another massive undertaking and countless hours of constructing and executing this new album, now two years later, the middle part of the dystopian trilogy is about to see the light of day as REEVOLUTION. A shaman, the central character of the series, is sent out to gather more slaves. He comes across a tribe and senses a light within them that triggers a distant memory of his past, making him realize that this is the original tribe he was taken from. He brings them back to the city and encounters what was done to the population and sets them free.

Mixed and co-produced by Forrester Savell and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side, with nearly forty-five minutes of some of the most creative and imaginative progressive metal likely to be released this year, REEVOLUTION will see release via Sensory on June 4th; preorders for the album can be placed at http://www.amazon.com/ReEvolution-Cynthesis/dp/B00C13BJ72/ . -Brutus Set Release Date For Svart Debut, Premiere New Video

Today, Svart Records announces June 14th as the international release date for Brutus’ new album, BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS. Self-described “beer-dripping blues rock,” Brutus are a Scandinavian quintet — part Swede, part Norwegian — who subscribe to the Witchcraft school of throwback hard rock. According to the band, inspiration is drawn from (amongst others) Blue Cheer, Sabbath, Pentagram, and Grand Funk Railroad. In other words: butterfingered, groovy, and psychedelic hard rock!

Brutus’ BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS is the band’s first album for Svart Records, and second overall. Comments the band, “BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS was recorded in various parts over a long period, so it took a while to get ready. But we are really happy with our second album, so it was all worth it. The songs were recorded in Subsonic Society here in Oslo, the same studio that we used for the split EP with Graviators. For mastering and mixing, we used Micke Nilson and Henryk Lipp from Music-a-Matic studio in Gothenburg — same guys we worked with for the debut LP. Now we just want to put it out for everyone to enjoy it as we do. You can start with the first single ‘Personal Riot’ right away!”

As a teaser for the new album, Brutus recently completed a video for “Personal Riot,” the title track of a limited-edition single set for release by Svart on May 24th. The video for Brutus’ “Personal Riot” can be viewed in its entirety here:

Track listing and cover for Brutus’ BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS to be revealed shortly.

-Paul Speer: AX INFERNO Kickstarter Campaign

Spring Greetings from Memphis,

My new album AX INFERNO is finally here! Well… not exactly here yet… official release is July 2013 but the tunes are “in the can.”

How would you like a CD or download one month earlier than the street date? You can get it by making a pledge to my Kickstarter campaign.

What is Kickstarter, you ask? It is a “crowd funding” platform that modern day entrepreneurs are using to raise funds for new inventions, books, etc., and in my case, a CD. (Click on the link above to check out my Kickstarter page.)

I am offering the CD along with other goodies including some very rare items I have collected over the years. Or how about I take you on a tour of Graceland and treat you to lunch afterwards? That is one of the many incentives available.

Kickstarter will be active for 30 days in which time I have to reach my financial goal or I get nada, nyet, nein, no dough.

Thanks for listening! Yours in music… Paul.

Cyanide Scream – BATTLE ON CD
Heavy Metal from USA

89/100 lordsofmetal.nl

With a new bass player Mark Daven the second album of this USA-based band was recorded. BATTLE ON follows strictly the path of the debut. The Heavy Metal of the Seventies and early Eighties was a development of the beat of the Sixties and Rock. Characterized by comprehensible song structures with the understanding for catchy tunes those bands were far from what is meant by the term “Heavy Metal” today. Cyanide Scream are based in this old tradition but sounding very up to date! Listen to the catchy “Forever Holding On” or the ballad “In The Cold!”

Heavy Metal from Australia

Taipan’s best known record was released in 1981 and is greatly respected by fans around the world. 1985 the last record of the early period was released before the Aussies returned with STONEWITCH in 2007. End of 2011 SNAKES was released by Killer Metal Records. Now the band presents their actual studio album METAL MACHINE, a piece of timeless, dark and heavy metal, which has its roots in the NWOBHM but not sounding antiquated. Catchy melodies do not have priority but causing moods motivating the listener diving deep in! Many changes in tempo are cribbing the varying material. Give it a listen and enjoy!

Also watch out for:

The next weeks there will be some new albums out:

KMR-CD014 Cyanide Scream (US) – BATTLE ON CD (Heavy Metal) – 19. April 2013

-Chosen Comments On Over 5,000 FREE Downloads Of Debut Album RESOLUTION

Today’s digital age has made metal more accessible than ever as the Internet has been a key tool in creating word of mouth between metal fans and their love for the music. Irish extreme metal band Chosen recently demonstrated this by offering their debut album RESOLUTION for free download via their official website http://www.chosen.ie/ , which has now reached over 5,000 FREE downloads since its release on March 30.

Drummer / Percussionist David McCann is proud to comment the following:
“We’re simply blown away by overall response to RESOLUTION and could never have predicted this intense level of interest. While 5,000 downloads in just one week may seem relatively small in the grand scheme of things, for a niche band such as ourselves it’s more than we could have ever expected and only reinforces the notion than putting this album up for free download was the right move.”

Produced by Alwyn Walker, RESOLUTION is a reflection of sheer perseverance and innovation, brimming with top-notch musicianship, well-crafted arrangements and inventive hooks. Merged with a rich audio production value, void of the sterile, homogeneous and plastic instrumentation factor, which currently dominates the commercial metal market, this debut album from one of Ireland’s noteworthy metal bands is a truly refreshing piece of work.

RESOLUTION is also available in two special edition CD formats:

o The Deluxe Special Edition is a double CD that features a nine-track bonus disc of unreleased songs, rough mixes, drum and bass tracks taken from their album sessions along with a detailed album booklet.

o The Collector’s Edition is a spawn of the Deluxe Special Edition that includes a beautiful 60-page, full-color soft cover booklet, extensive liner notes, lyrical themes and illustrations for each song, rare photos, studio diaries and more, all exhibited within an exquisite tapestry of expanded album artwork courtesy of Fiaz Farrelly making it a must have item for those who want something a little more tangible to add to their music collection.

“You can never claim you have heard the heaviest music ever until you experienced Chicago’s Lair Of The Minotaur…” – Metal Reviews

“…one hell of an EP, and proof that, even after ten years, Lair Of The Minotaur is still pissed off and ready for battle. This two song EP is just over eight minutes, but these two tracks show why this band has had such a strong underground following… 9/10” – Apoch’s Metal Review

“Just over eight minutes of raw, ugly and brutal metal that rages with the ferocity of a ravenous beast, GODSLAYER finds Lair Of The Minotaur at their rampaging best. 7.8/10” – Scratch The Surface

“…leaves a morbidly evil lasting impression that audiences won’t soon forget… Highly recommended for all, that is if you can handle the sheer unstoppable brutality that lays in wait. 5/5” – Volumes Of Sin

BILL LEVERTY – DRIVE (B+/B) Leverty Music, 2013
10 tracks, RT: 44:47

FireHouse guitarist Bill Leverty’s latest solo venture is a covers album that gathers together many tracks that he’s released digitally as singles over the last couple of years. They were recorded with Leverty on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, along with bassist Keith Horne (Peter Frampton, Heart) and drummer Andre LaBelle (Vinnie Vincent, Josh Todd, Chris Holmes). (Add Cactus/Savoy Brown singer Jimmy Kunes to this trio and you have the upcoming Flood The Engine, by the way — can’t wait for that!) In the liner notes Leverty describes the songs as ones he heard on the radio growing up, and inspired him to become a musician. An ass-kicking “Fortunate Son” (Creedence Clearwater Revival) kicks DRIVE off in a heavy, aggressive manner; there’s some flashy bass work from Horne at the beginning, plus tons of extra guitar parts throughout. Another straight-up rocker is “Free Ride” (Edgar Winter Group), which features a ripping solo. “No Time” (The Guess Who) pleasantly surprises with its top-notch layered backing vocals, gritty lead vocals, and multiple lead breaks; this one could easily have been sped up but Leverty opted to play it cool and laidback… until the nice, long outro solo that is. Also boasting a lengthy outro solo, “One” (Three Dog Night) is spooky and atmospheric and builds nicely. “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” (Steely Dan) is as polished and smooth as you’d expect. Then, Leverty & Co. get their funk on in a big way with the remaining tracks. “Spanish Moon” (Little Feat) is moody and slinky with more stellar bass work, and “I Shot The Sheriff” (Bob Marley, Eric Clapton) is phat, slithery reggae funk with emotional vocals. “Jesus Children Of America” (Stevie Wonder) is an easy-sounding mid-tempo funk rocker with a great bass groove and multi-faceted lead and backing vocals. “Fire” (The Ohio Players) is a TOTAL funk overload with hot percussion, a ripping solo, and plenty of vocal “mmphs” and “UHs!” throughout. Closer “I Just Want To Celebrate” (Rare Earth) is a funkin’ stomper, complete with a drum solo/percussion breakdown that has scat vocals and, when drawn out, would be an ideal “audience participation part” during a live show. Despite the varied backgrounds and styles of the original artists, Leverty’s takes on these songs dovetail nicely into a cohesive album. What’s more, he appears to be having a lot of fun expanding his vocal stylings, and yes, the boy can funk, too!

TANGO DOWN – IDENTITY CRISIS (B) Kivel Records, 2012

This New York band has been around for a few years but for whatever reason has escaped my attention until now. Featuring guitarist Scott “Rif” Miller (Adriangale), bassist Chris “Invisible Man” Konys (since replaced by Ronnie Parkes), drummer Keith “Bam Bam” Michaels, and new singer David Reece (Accept, Bangalore Choir, Stream, Gypsy Rose), Tango Down plays a nice mix of polished hard rock and edgy AOR that sometimes borders on metal. Gritty opener “Crying To Me,” probably the heaviest and fastest track on IDENTITY CRISIS, merges the best aspects of the first two Skid Row albums. A few summery, big-chorused AORish tracks follow, including “Dream Child,” “Blame…,” and “Back To Life” (total ’80s radio there!), plus there’s somewhat of a throwback to 1987/SLIP OF THE TONGUE-era commercial Whitesnake called “Corners Of My Mind,” and the closer is a smoky, bluesy jam called “Magic Pudding” (which apparently first appeared in a different form on Reece/Kronlund’s SOLID in 2011). The rest of the songs remind me of a more sophisticated or pompy style of ’80s hard rock, a la House Of Lords or maybe some Paul Stanley solo material; “Alone,” “Enlighten Me,” “Hearts Catch Fire,” and “Calling Out” are all far beyond typical hair metal and sport varying levels of keyboards, hooks, big choruses, and tasty guitar bits. This is definitely a solid album with the highlights being “Hearts Catch Fire,” “Crying To Me,” and “Enlighten Me.” The short running time ensures the songs get right to the point, Miller’s playing is surprisingly shreddy in many places (we’re not talking Yngwie here, mind you, but still…), and it’s nice to hear Reece again. Investigate this one!
