-Trooper: A New Cask And Bottled Ale From Iron Maiden And Robinsons Brewery

[Note: I took this from Facebook. Nobody sue me, please. – Tim]

British rock legends Iron Maiden have teamed up with Cheshire family brewers Robinsons to create a new beer, Trooper.

Real ale fan and history aficionado Bruce Dickinson, Maiden’s vocalist, played a major role in developing the unique flavour of the beer, entailing ongoing visits to Robinson’s brewery in Stockport. Dickinson’s on-stage Union Jack flag-waving military character is an iconic element of the band’s live concerts and “The Trooper,” written by bassist Steve Harris, is one of Maiden’s most popular songs and one of the highlights of any Maiden show.

Announcing the partnership, Oliver Robinson, Managing Director of Robinsons, said: “This collaboration — between two huge British success stories — makes for an ideal and natural match; Bruce Dickinson loves his real ale, and Robinsons Brewery is one of Britain’s most established and respected independent family-owned brewers.”

And Bruce Dickinson added: “I’m a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer. I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinsons are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavour and texture that is Trooper. I love it.”

Iron Maiden, who continue their Maiden England World Tour this summer — including an historic return to the Download Festival, Donington Park, headlining for a record fifth time — have been at the forefront of heavy rock worldwide for more than three decades. Maiden are one of Britain’s most influential and revered bands, with close to 90 million album sales, more than 2,000 live performances in 58 countries and 15 studio albums described by critics as being of “unerring quality and power,” including the most recent — THE FINAL FRONTIER — which is their biggest ever chart success attaining No. 1 positions in over 28 countries including the UK.

Robinsons has been brewing award-winning beers from its Unicorn Brewery in Stockport for 175 years. Best known for its legendary “Old Tom” strong ale, which was voted “World’s Best Beer” by the international Beers of the World publication, it is Robinsons’ younger ales (Dizzy Blonde and “build a rocket boys!” beer; produced in partnership with Manchester band Elbow) that have lately been causing a stir in the beer world and introducing future ale drinking generations to Robinsons.

Oliver Robinson said: “Trooper is a premium British ale with true depth of character and flavour. For more than thirty years, the unmistakable icon of Eddie, the band’s instantly-recognisable mascot, has adorned every album cover, T-shirt and poster — so it is fitting that Eddie will now adorn the cask pump clip and take centre stage on the bottle label of Trooper.

“Not only do Iron Maiden genuinely enjoy a good pint of cask ale, but so do many of their fans — and they have an important part to play in our customer base. This partnership works for both of us. Music and beer are great treats for the senses in their own right, but the combination is very powerful. Authentic collaborations such as this are invaluable not only to our company but to the industry as a whole, because it shows that the world of real ale is more than just manufacturing, it is liquid artistry by the people who brew it — and for the people who drink it.”

Fans of both Iron Maiden and real ale can sign up to get news and updates on Trooper Premium British Beer from http://www.ironmaidenbeer.com/ , where bottles will be available to purchase by both UK and overseas customers from May 2013.

Melodic metal legends Stratovarius are pleased to unleash their “Halcyon Days” video from the band’s latest full-length, NEMESIS. Hailed by the media as, “the best Stratovarius album since many, many years,” by Metal Hammer Germany, “a collection of the band’s greatest hits that you never heard until now,” be Metal Underground (US) and, “the strongest Stratovarius album since the beginning of the century,” by KaaosZine in Finland, Stratovarius lives up to their reputation as one of the leading names of the metal genre once again exceeding fans’ and critics’ expectations and charting in ten countries thus far: Finland: # 3, Czech Republic # 12, Switzerland # 30, Spain # 32, Germany # 41, France: # 56, Sweden # 56, Austria: # 62, Belgium # 103 and Canada: # 126.

Coinciding with the band’s European tour, set to commence in Helsinki, Finland, the band proudly reveals the video for their second single. The footage for “Halcyon Days” was shot in Lithuania by Pekka Hara, and perfectly captures the song’s theme of finding one’s peace of mind.

The band further notes: “It was a really nice experience working with Pekka and his team, and Lithuania was a pleasant surprise, very friendly people there and everything worked out great. This video sets the mood of the song perfectly. And the fact is: A band is nothing without the fans.”

Prior to the video shoot, the band had launched a fan competition asking their supporters to send a picture of their most prized Stratovarius item. Over 100 items were sent, of which the band handpicked the 10 most original objects, which are now featured in the video. Over the course of the next weeks, Stratovarius will also launch a special fan item version of the video on their official Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/stratovarius .

It is without the shadow of a doubt Stratovarius’ best album in ages… Album of the year award? You betchya! If you are a fan of this band, you can’t afford to miss this incredible album.” — Metal Reviews

“This is more than music, it’s a masterpiece, and should go down in the book of heavy metal as one of the best heavy metal albums of all time…” — Metalholic

“NEMESIS finds the band recapturing the magic of their glory days. Most importantly, the songwriting is excellent as the band seems determined to capture memorable songs that sit alongside the best of their catalog.” — About.com

-Black Star Riders Announce Debut Album Title, Track Listing & Worldwide Release Dates!

Black Star Riders, the new band featuring Thin Lizzy members Ricky Warwick, Damon Johnson, Scott Gorham and Marco Mendoza together with drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper, Megadeth), have announced ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE as the title of their debut album on Nuclear Blast Entertainment, which will be released worldwide on the following dates:

May 21 – Japan
May 22 – Sweden
May 24 – Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Norway
May 27 – UK, France, BeNeLux, Poland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Greece
May 28 – US, Canada, Italy, South America

About the origin of the album title, Black Star Riders front man Ricky Warwick states:

“I was watching a documentary about World War II bombers and saw the name painted on the side of one of the aircraft. The name just resonated with me and it seem to encapsulate the turmoil that we, as a society, are currently experiencing. The past few years have been such a wild ride and now with the release of the album, it sounded like a bad-ass album title that summed up what Black Star Riders is all about.”

Produced & mixed by the legendary Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Rush), the track listing for ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE is:

1. All Hell Breaks Loose
2. Bound For Glory
3. Kingdom Of The Lost
4. Bloodshot
5. Kissin’ The Ground
6. Hey Judas
7. Hoodoo Voodoo
8. Valley Of The Stones
9. Someday Salvation
10. Before The War
11. Blues Ain’t So Bad

The album will be released as a standard CD and also as a special edition digi-pak featuring a bonus track “Right To Be Wrong” and a “Making Of” DVD.

A 24-minute compilation of behind-the-scenes video reports from the band’s studio time in Los Angeles can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEx9gD8RPz8 .

Confirmed festival appearances for Black Star Riders include:

June 1 Hi Rock Festival – Inzell, Germany
June 2 Hi Rock Festival – St. Goarshausen, Germany
June 8 Sweden Rock Festival – Solvesborg, Sweden
Nov. 29 Hard Rock Hell – N. Wales, U.K.

More tour dates to be announced shortly.

-Mash-Up Masters Beatallica Ready New Release, ABBEY LOAD

You’ve got to tip your hat to the lads in Beatallica. Few would have thought to merge together two of the most successful acts of their respective genres — pop tunesmiths the Beatles and thrash metal bashers Metallica — and create a must-hear, creative blend of both iconic artists. And the band that contains such wittily named band members as Jaymz Lennfield, Kliff McBurtney, Ringo Larz, and Grg III are back with their third full-length overall, ABBEY LOAD, on April 16 via Oglio Records (a label that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year).

“Overall the album is our darkest,” explains Lennfield. “Not sure why it turned out that way, to be honest. We didn’t realize it til we got to listening to the first mixes. It sounds brooding in places. Not like we tuned down any more or played any stoner rock or anything. But the overall vibe is deeper than other projects we’ve done. Maybe it’s cuz the Beatles’ ABBEY ROAD was the last release for them — like the end of an era. And we were placing our fingers on that. After a while, I got to embrace that whole vibe. Beatallica is always fun and interesting, and yes there are ‘candy’ songs on the album such as ‘Help!’ and ‘I Saw Her Standing There’… but there is something more foreboding about ABBEY LOAD than what we initially thought.”

Once more, Beatallica have successfully found links between both aforementioned bands, most notably on the album’s tour de force, “Abbey Load Medley.” “The medley… well, it’s obviously one of the great famous pieces of rock music,” says Lennfield. “We really enjoyed working in NEWER Metallica tunes. Folks always ask us how much old stuff from Metallica we can use. Helloooo… they have a LARGE catalog, so use it! Those tunes work great, plus the fact that we are doing what we always do: deal with tempo, time signature, rhythm patterns, keys from major to minor, adding our own riffs, etc., but now we have to make all the songs in the medley sound like they fit. Not just one song at a time, but now five songs, bang-bang-bang. The challenge was irresistible.”

As for Beatallica’s plans for 2013, Lennfield predicts some good, old-fashioned global roadwork. “Well, we’d like to finally hit Japan. It’s just way overdue. We have US folks asking for us to come back so we’ll see how to best route. As far as Europe, they are starting to consider the fall sometime.”

“Beatallica is so much more than a novelty cover band,” adds Oglio Records founder Carl Caprioglio. “Beatallica’s members and producer are among the most creative and talented people I have encountered in my years with Oglio Records. Their ability to blend influences from these two legendary bands is as amazing and impressive today as it was when we met in 2006.”

Imagine what the Beatles’ ABBEY ROAD would have sounded like if it had been originally released by Metallica, and you have a good starting point for ABBEY LOAD.

Finest Hard Rock featuring Michael Bormann!

Redrum is a melodic Hard Rock band based in Thessaloniki (Greece). Athan “Lyssa” Kazakis and Panos Baxevanis founded the project during September 2003. About a year later, they had recorded 12 songs in a local studio. At this point the band still wasn’t complete in the way of needed members.

They decided to get in touch with well known German vocalist, songwriter, producer and engineer Michael Bormann (ex-Jaded Heart, J.R. Blackmore, Bonfire, Zeno Roth, Rain). Michael liked the material and so he recorded all the vocal parts (and co-wrote a couple of the songs) in his RMB Studios in Germany. The first record label, Sleaszy Rider Records, a Greek label, released NO TURNING BACK, in September 2007 with rave reviews and successful sales.

During their headliner shows in Greece, Redrum supported great acts like Bonfire, Tyketto, Krokus, Danger Danger, House Of Lords, Adler’s Appetite, Blue Tears, Europe, Robert Plant and Glenn Hughes. Redrum also appeared at festivals such as Firefest and Rockwave in Athens.

“No Turning Back” was the first Redrum song released, from their debut which was a featured track on V3, the third compilation CD of http://www.melodicrock.com/ .

The Redrum project came together as a dynamite and popular hard rock band with the Greek/German alliance that is working very well in the way of musical chemistry.

For their second album Redrum decided to write and record together at RMB Studios in Duisburg, Germany with Michael Bormann at the helm. In about 14 days, 12 killer songs were written and the basics were recorded. These incredible songs are now ready to rock you on their new CD titled VICTIMS OF OUR CIRCUMSTANCES set for a worldwide release in 2013 along with a tour to support their latest greatest masterpiece loaded full of pure hard rock heaven.

Pure Rawk Editor, Nix Crichton comments “We had already taken over £600 in advance sales and we’re having a final count up on Monday (after having a little sleep!). We’re so pleased to have been able to raise so much money for such a great charity. The money from the door, wristbands and pin badges is going directly to the Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey. Their unit is state of the art and is already making a massive impact on the lives of families blighted by the horrid C word.

“It was lovely to see so many people from the six previous awards shows come back and so many new faces. There was such a feel good vibe going on and a hefty amount of networking between bands, industry, press and punters from all over the country. We’ll be back again in Feb/March 2014 at the Boston Music Room!”

Sponsors for the Pure Rawk Awards 2013 were BandApp, Big Green Coach, Metal Buddy, Badness Tango Custom Jewellery and Missy Le Pink’s Tattoo Tonic.

-The New Black: Free Download, Guest Singers And That Girl From Playboy

“Count Me In” as free download:

One week before the release of their new album III: CUT LOOSE, German heavy rockers offer their single as a free download.

To download:
Just register at http://www.afm-records.com/free with the code “MG52K2V”. Alternatively you can visit http://www.reverbnation.com/thenewblackofficial .

Comments the band: “Blackies & Blackettes! Thanks for the impressive click rates and all the comments to the ‘Count Me In’ clip. Now you can take the song with you wherever you go, in the car, to the bar, visiting mom or your next stint on a red carpet somewhere. Download it, crank it! See you on March 15th in Düsseldorf or in April on the Rock’n’Roll Overdose tour!”

The clip to “Count Me In” ( http://youtu.be/o1VLKIVNJj4 ) shows a young lady fighting off a bunch of “evil” middle fingers. The role is played by Cindy Wenk, who shortly after the filming was voted “Bild Girl 2013” by Germany’s biggest tabloid paper — and can be seen in the current issue of Playboy. There have been rumors about half the band becoming quite nervous in hindsight, while the rest plays it cool: “See? We know even before them all! Fludid was it, he knows all the beautiful ladies. Congratulations! To Cindy, not Fludid…”

III: CUT LOOSE, the third album by The New Black, will be released on March 15. The regular edition contains 12 tracks, whereas the limited digi-pak version offers another studio song as a bonus and not less than four moody acoustic compositions. That’s a total of whopping 17 songs!

For the song “Superhuman Mission” the band invited two old friends to the studio for some screaming: Chris Birx of Motorjesus, a group that The New Black played their first gigs with in 2009, and Tyler Voxx of The Bulletmonks. The result: FAT!

On March 15, the band will be playing a special release show in Düsseldorf, in April they will be part of the Rock’n’Roll Overdose tour all over Germany.

-Mongrel Taps Mike Ariza For Permanent Bass Slot

BOSTON, MA — Boston based metal / punk crossover outfit Mongrel is pleased to announce that Mike Ariza has joined the band as the new full-time bassist. Ariza previously played for the Las Vegas alternative band Vault’d and was looking for a new band after his return home to Massachusetts not long ago. Guitarist, Adam Savage stated, “We found Mike online, reached out, he immediately was into the music and clicked with us pretty instantly. Within one week of meeting us, and four days with the tunes he joined us on stage for our show with Drowning Pool and Flyleaf in CT and it was an obvious great fit. We invited him to join the band that day and are really excited to have him be a part of the Mongrel family.” Ariza took over bass duties for Mongrel from Michael Mariano (ex-Affliction guitarist) who had been filling in with the band since December. Mike will make his “official” debut as a member of the band on March 16 at Tammany Hall in Worcester, MA.

Mongrel recently saw the UK release of their recent full length album RECLAMATION via THC-Music/Vanity Music Group with distribution through Code7 / Plastichead. RECLAMATION is now available in brick and mortar outlets throughout Great Britain in addition to digital retailers such as Amazon and iTunes. RECLAMATION was recorded and mixed by Jim Foster (POD, Nullset, Sully Erna) who also did the band’s video for lead off track “Bored To Death” ( http://bit.ly/P05CUe ). RECLAMATION was first released in the US on 25 September 2012 by THC-Music (home of American Head Charge, Oedipus, Attika7, etc.) and is receiving airplay on DMX, Faction on Sirius/XM, and hit number 41 on the CMJ charts this past fall.

Mongrel also just recently announced a new sponsorship deal with Artist Series Guitars to add to the list of sponsors/endorsements Mongrel has earned over the years including Marshall Amps, Peavey, Seymour Duncan, Dean Markley, Agile Guitars, Monster Cable, In-Tune Guitar Pics, Cocaine Energy Drinks and Cabin Fever Maple Whiskey. ASG recently made Savage’s custom “TV Fight” guitar based on artwork done by Joey James Hernandez (Otep, Type O Negative, etc). -Windhand Signs To Relapse Records For Forthcoming Album

Relapse Records this week officially welcomes Richmond, Virginia’s masters of ethereal doom metal, Windhand, to the label’s roster, having signed the quintet for the release of their forthcoming LP.

Stated the members of Windhand in response to their joining forces with the Relapse horde, “We’re all so honored to be in the company of so many amazing artists. To know that our next record will be alongside some of the albums that inspired us to play music is pretty incredible.”

Windhand has begun laying down tracks for the to-be-named upcoming LP in their home studio, The Darkroom, where the outfit will record and mix the entire album, and deliver it to Relapse for a Fall 2013 release date. More details will be made available as the album nears release.

Having formed in 2008 in the fertile Richmond, Virginia musical underground, Windhand’s incredible, organic style of low-end doom and trancelike occult/ethereal vocals helped the band catch immediate attention well beyond the region, drawing comparisons to everything from Electric Wizard and Pallbearer to The Devil’s Blood and Blood Ceremony. Continuous live shows and US tours have seen them share the stage with notable acts including Pallbearer, Tragedy, Balaclava, Iron Tongue, Bastard Sapling, Pilgrim, Elder, Pentagram, Sourvein, The Gates Of Slumber, Graveyard, Thrones, Mares Of Thrace, Coffinworm, Across Tundras, Primitive Weapons among countless others.

In the meantime, REFLECTION OF THE NEGATIVE, a split album with Windhand and local scene brethren and now label mates Cough, will see release via Relapse in mid-April. Cough leads off, delivering a characteristically electrifying down-tuned epic track, while their brethren in Windhand serve up two brand new epic songs for their half of the dirge, in the end bearing nearly 40 minutes music from two prime acts in the contemporary doom/sludge circuit. An album trailer and pre-orders for the split LP are available at http://www.relapse.com/coughwind .

Stay tuned for more recording and live updates on Windhand over the coming months.

Track List:
1. Prolog Im Himmel
2. Nachtgeist
3. Durch Den Kosmischen Dunst
4. Sonnenwind
5. Mythos
6. Sonnenaufgang

This year promises to be a year of two great comets, both visible in the Northern hemisphere, the first one in March and another one in December. Experts believe these cosmic wanderers could turn out to be the most spectacular comets in decades, even centuries. Now, a Finnish deep space agency Svart Records is proud to launch yet another black and round object that rushes into both the inner parts of the Solar System and our earthly minds: an album by E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr, a Finnish Kosmische Musik band fuelled by synthetic waves, propelling sequences and pulsating rhythms. This mission has been prepared for more than two solar revolutions and finally the probe is ready for takeoff.

E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr’s long-awaited studio album, entitled KOMETENBAHN, is a compilation of six original sonic pieces that mirror both hemispheres of the band. While E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr’s quest for cosmic experiences is proudly inspired by German Kosmische Musik of the 1970s, the band also boldly pursues to probe frontiers that have remained unchallenged for four decades. KOMETENBAHN is a journey into organic atmospheres, warm analogue timbres and melodic sequences that bring the sound of the pioneers into the 21st century.

E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr has performed in various venues ranging from rock clubs to art museums, libraries and movie theaters. All music of E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr is made to be played live and also many of the album tracks have evolved in live performances and jam sessions.

The four space cadets of E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr are: Pertti Grönholm, synthesizers, sequencers and samplers; Jaakko Penttinen, synthesizers and sequencers; Kimi Kärki, guitar, e-bow and effects; Ismo Virta, Memotron, guitar and effects.

All the band members have been active in various underground music scenes for a long time. Kimi Kärki is the founder and guitarist of doom metal bands Reverend Bizarre and Lord Vicar and psychedelic progressive band called Orne. Ismo Virta leads a folk prog band called Kosmos and also makes up a dark ambient duo Dystopia with Pertti Grönholm. Besides Dystopia, Grönholm is known for his techno, house and ambient projects such as Corporate 09. Jaakko Penttinen has a background in various punk bands such as Forca Macabra, but nowadays is better known for his ambient and space music projects such as Galactic Travellers (with Ismo Virta and others).

-Okay, new Priest album — now we’re talking! The weird are-they-or-aren’t-they-retired saga continues, but whatever, a new album is a new album. They’ve been reunited for nearly a decade(!) already and we’ve only seen two new studio albums in that time. Call me greedy but I certainly want more! And the “Epitaph” tour DVD looks cool, assuming the set list (see above) is accurate. I was unable to see the “Epitaph” tour when it hit Chicago, so I’m looking forward to checking out “Starbreaker,” “The Sentinel,” and “Blood Red Skies,” among others, on this new DVD. (Nitpick: I’d have rather heard/seen something else from TURBO besides “Turbo Lover.” Oh well. I think it would’ve floored everyone if they’d have played something like “Reckless” or “Rock You All Around The World.” But I digress.) And I know Rob Halford has done “Never Satisfied” with his solo band, so it’ll be cool to see the full band doing it here. Final note on this: I watched the DVD trailer/teaser thingy and yes, wow, boy does Richie Faulkner REALLY look like a young K.K. Downing up there on stage.

-Hey, look! A new U.D.O. album. That Mr. Dirkschneider just does *not* quit. He just unloaded a two-disc retrospective and a live set, and now another studio album. The song titles have me thinking this will be another typical U.D.O. album, and that is just how it should be, isn’t it?

-I debated including the news bit on “midwestern country rockers” The New Black 7, but, gol’ durn it, the song and video are pretty cool. Ima git me a big ol’ belt buckle right now.

-The bottles of Trooper beer sure look cool, what with Eddie on the label artwork. Check ’em out at http://www.ironmaidenbeer.com/ .

-I found it very cool that Adrenalin Mob chose to cover Badlands’ “High Wire” on that new COVERTA EP. I’ve always loved that song.

-Are you ready for a German Kosmische Musik of the 1970s revival?

-In my current playlist: Golden Resurrection – ONE VOICE FOR THE KINGDOM (Doolittle Group), Gloryhammer – TALES FROM THE KINGDOM OF FIFE (Napalm Records), Orange Goblin – A EULOGY FOR THE FANS… ORANGE GOBLIN LIVE 2012 (Candlelight Records), Nubian Rose – MOUNTAIN (Funklord Dynasty).
