Carmine Appice – Bio
As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band’s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher’s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent’s “She’s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes’ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein’s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert’s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell’s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.

Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King’s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning guitar hero Jeff Beck to form the first super-group: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).

One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. In ’76, he joined Rod Stewart’s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart’s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Young Turks.” He left Stewart to record his first solo album, ROCKERS, and tour Japan and North America with an all-star band. In the early ’80s, he toured with Ozzy Osbourne and Ted Nugent. In the mid ’80s, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring. And in the late ’80s, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record — MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON — and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake’s John Sykes and The Firm’s Tony Franklin. In the early ’90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group.

As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, “The Realistic Rock Drum Method,” selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). He was the first rock drummer and rock musician to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums around the world, a tradition he continues. In appreciation for his universal appeal, Los Angeles was one of four cities that have had “Carmine Appice Day.” In ’91, he was forever immortalized via his induction in cement to the Hollywood’s Rock Walk (next to his idols, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich).

Vinny Appice – Bio
Has powered the rhythm live and in the studio with the bands Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Ozzy Osbourne, WWIII, Axis, Rick Derringer, and at age 16 performed with John Lennon “live” on stage and in the studio. Vinny has recorded and co-written songs on over 25 albums and CDs many which are multi-platinum records and still selling numerous copies and downloads today! Drumming across the world for over two decades and playing before countless fans and selling millions of records his drumming can also be heard on numerous movie soundtracks and DVDs including “Wayne’s World 2,” “Heavy Metal,” “Iron Eagle,” “Bedazzled” and recently “Bad Teacher.” He is the author of drum instruction book “Rock Steady” and DVD HARD ROCK DRUMMING TECHNIQUES and has performed incredible drum clinics around the globe. Numerous books have been written about Black Sabbath and Dio with the authors always mentioning his unique powerful drumming style and has become a part of rock drumming history!

In 2006, Black Sabbath was reborn as Heaven & Hell with Vinny again driving the rhythm behind the band with the great Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Three world tours followed as well as a CD titled THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, the first studio album since 1991’s DEHUMANIZER. The band also released the HEAVEN & HELL LIVE IN EUROPE DVD in 2010 which was the last video recording of the late Ronnie James Dio at the Wacken Festival in Germany. Vinny can also be heard on the recent release of DIO AT DONINGTON, a live performance of Dio in 1983 and 1987. In 2012, Vinny’s new heavy band Kill Devil Hill featuring mega bassist Rex Brown (Pantera/Down) vocalist Dewey Bragg and guitarist Mark Zavon, toured and released their first CD on SPV Records. The music is a cross between Sabbath, Alice In Chains and some Zep. Vinny is working on the release of a new rock drum instruction book and instructional video.

-Lingua Mortis Orchestra: Live Debut On 70,000 Tons Of Metal Cruise; First Details On Upcoming Album

End of January, the Lingua Mortis Orchestra — founded by German heavy metallers Rage as an orchestral side project — made its live debut over the course of 2013’s 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise: On the high seas in the Caribbean, the 15-member band played two highly celebrated gigs in the packed “Chorus Line Theater” on board of the “Majesty Of The Seas” cruise ship. Enthusiastic feedback by both fans and the press provided the combo with another boost of motivation for the upcoming recordings of the debut album that are due in April under the musical direction of Victor Smolski. Right in time for several booked festival shows (on this year’s Wacken Open Air, among others), Lingua Mortis Orchestra’s debut record is set for an early August release.

Victor Smolski — guitarist and head of the project — comments on the work progress: “Back from Florida’s heat to Germany’s iciness, but there can be no talk of feeling chilly — we’re boiling over with work in our studio! I’m already back in arranging and composing mode, while mountains of scores are piling up on my desk. I’m already fascinated by the new Lingua Mortis Orchestra songs due to their multifacetedness: Rock-hard tracks, some of them even heavier than those of our latest Rage record 21, are contrasted with balladic melodies of sheer beauty. The first official Lingua Mortis Orchestra album will be something very special for us, as we’ve never created anything like this before. You can look forward to a concept album with long tracks, sung by Peavy and enriched with female vocals as well as with exotic orchestra instruments. I’ll keep you posted!”

-50 Concerts In 50 States For Epilepsy Awareness

Partnering with the largest non-profits in the world of epilepsy, Candlelight Concerts for Epilepsy Awareness is proud to announce the first nation-wide epilepsy awareness endeavor — 50 Concerts in 50 States. It’s a network of coordinated live events over one weekend in March 2013.

Candlelight Concerts, along with Epilepsy Foundation ( http://www.EFA.org/ ), CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy ( http://www.CureEpilepsy.org/ ), Team Epilepsy ( http://www.TeamEpilepsy.com/ ) and Doose Syndrome Epilepsy Alliance ( http://www.DooseSyndrome.org/ ), are standing united to raise epilepsy awareness on this single weekend in March.

At each event, volunteers will be present to distribute information regarding epilepsy (a 16-page book prepared specifically for these events), provide access to services, answer questions and raise donations — all of which will go directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Events will vary in size from intimate house concerts with 20-40 attendees to 18,000+ seat arena shows with nationally known touring artists. Artists from all genres — classic rock, folk, jazz, singer/songwriters, orchestras, electronic, comedians, plays and more. All with the same objective, to distribute information and raise epilepsy awareness. All genres, all volunteers involved with the singular purpose to change the way the world sees and understands epilepsy.

This national network of events grows out of Candlelight Concerts for Epilepsy Awareness — a webcast house concert series based in Pennington NJ. Started and run by Eric Miller, whose wife Carolina, passed away in August 2011 at the age of 25 as a result of epilepsy. Since that time, Eric has worked tirelessly to raise epilepsy awareness in her honor and in honor of all those living with or lost to epilepsy. The series has featured such amazing artists as Corey Glover of Living Colour, Eric Bazilian, Chris Barron, The Young Dubliners, Dan Reed, Mary Fahl, and many others. This network of events takes that model and raises it to a national level on a single weekend.

-Proto-Metal Legends Dust To Have Their Two Classic Albums Reissued Via Sony/Legacy

There are few artists you can single-handedly point to as being a trailblazers of a specific musical style. But when it comes to American heavy metal, Dust is one such band. Comprised of singer/guitarist/songwriter Richie Wise, bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Marc Bell (with Kenny Kerner supplying lyrics and sharing songwriting and production duties), the band issued a pair of cult classic albums — 1971’s self-titled debut and 1972’s HARD ATTACK — before splitting up. Both albums have been long out-of-print, but headbangers will now get a chance to discover the legend, as Sony/Legacy will be reissuing both albums on a re-mastered (from the original analog master tapes) single CD on April 16th, with a Record Store Day exclusive vinyl version released on April 20th.

“We were loud and fast, and it was just unreal,” recalls Wise. “Even when we played low, we were 20 times louder than everybody else. When we got our record deal, I got three Marshall stacks, Kenny Aaronson bought four Acoustic 360 watt amps, Marc bought this huge set of Ludwigs with a big 28-inch bass drum. On stage, it was just an amazing amount of exhale — not a whole lot of inhale.”

And while they may not have acquired fame with Dust, all four aforementioned contributors found success elsewhere — Bell as the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame/Grammy Award-winning drummer for the Ramones (after changing his name to Marky Ramone), Aaronson as a bassist-for-hire with rock’s elite (Bob Dylan, Sammy Hagar, Joan Jett), and Kerner & Wise as a successful production duo (who produced Kiss’ first two classic albums).

As evidenced by such metallic rockers as “From A Dry Camel,” “Suicide,” and “Stone Woman,” the band had no problem matching the power and the fury of such peers as Black Sabbath. “Musically, locally, we stuck out,” explains Bell. “We were teenagers, but we were pretty developed as musicians — concerning that genre. Nobody else in Brooklyn that I knew of could do what we could do as a threesome. And we had a style. Yeah, we could all play blues and rock, but we took it further. We took it to different time changes within the songs, and people weren’t doing that at that time.”

With modern day technology at their disposal, the newly re-mastered Dust release rocks harder than ever before — as the band worked directly with the original master tapes. “We tweaked it a bit,” points out Aaronson. “But didn’t want to stray too far from the original, because that’s what people who do know it are used to. If it was up to me, I was thinking, ‘I wish I could re-mix the whole record,’ but the re-mastering was nice.”

But it’s the quality of Dust’s music that has persevered all these years, and the proof is within the upcoming DUST/HARD ATTACK reissue. “I think the music is relevant today,” says Kerner. “I think young kids who never heard it before will find new metal heroes, and people who grew up with Dust will rekindle their love for this music and this band!”

Gama Bomb Unveils Cover Art, Track List And Single From THE TERROR TAPES!

Irish thrashers Gama Bomb have unveiled the artwork and track list for their forthcoming album THE TERROR TAPES.

The band’s fourth album, to be released on April 19 in Europe and April 22 in the UK, followed by a US release on May 7, boasts a cover illustrated by veteran movie poster artist Graham Humphreys who created pieces for classics “A Nightmare On Elm Street” and “Evil Dead.”

“We grew up in terror of VHS covers painted by Graham, but we never knew his name,” says vocalist Philly Byrne. “We found him, had the audacity to chat to him, and now it’s a dream come true to work together and to see the astounding work he’s done for us.

“The cover shows a man being consumed by a giant, living tape machine. It’s got the feeling of a grubby old 1980s video sleeve I think. It ties in perfectly with our obsession with old technology and mad horror imagery. It’s the best album cover we’ve ever had. Everyone else’s album art sucks because of this.”

THE TERROR TAPES will be preceded by a single for the track “Terrorscope,” available both as a completely free download on March 26, with a vinyl release following in April.

“It was really important to us to give people some music for nothing,” says Byrne. “It’s how we get our music and we want people to know we’re cool with them doing that, as long as they support us. Support comes from a lot of different places, not just the front pocket.”

Gama Bomb have also revealed the track list of the album, which will be released on AFM Records and follows the band’s 2009 album TALES FROM THE GRAVE IN SPACE.

THE TERROR TAPES track listing:

1. The Wrong Stuff
2. Legend Of Speed
3. Backwards Bible
4. Beverly Hills Robocop
5. Smoke The Blow With Willem Dafoe
6. We Started The Fire

[Note: This is from RadiantRecords.com. – Tim]

In their 20 years together, Spock’s Beard have built a reputation for invention, musicality and sheer restive energy. Yet perhaps nothing they have done before can properly prepare you for their 11th studio album. BRIEF NOCTURNES AND DREAMLESS SLEEP is an album that will constantly surprise. For one thing, this represents the studio debut of a new lineup. For another it sees the return of an old friend.

Let’s deal with the former first. Because long-time members Alan Morse (guitar/vocals), Dave Meros (bass/keyboards/vocals) and Ryo Okumoto (keyboards/vocals) are now joined by vocalist Ted Leonard and drummer Jimmy Keegan. “Jimmy’s been our live drummer now for about 10 years,” says Meros. “But this is the first time he’s been in the studio with us. He’s very creative, as well as being a killer drummer, and he also has an amazing voice. So his presence has definitely brought an extra dimension to what we do. Ted is a vocalist who is capable of many different vocal styles and there was always the possibility that he’d bring something very different to our sound, but he got the Spock’s Beard vibe straight away and it sounds like he’s been singing with us for years. He is also quite a good guitar player and songwriter and that is very evident on this new CD.”

As for that aforementioned “old friend,” well that sees a return for Neal Morse, who left the band in 2002. Well, a return as songwriter anyway.

“Al and Neal are brothers, of course, and keep in regular contact with each other. What happened was that Al spoke to Neal and told him he was working on some ideas. Neal said he’d love to help, so Al went down to Nashville, where his brother’s now living, and they collaborated on the songs ‘Afterthoughts’ (for which Leonard later wrote the lyrics) and ‘Waiting For Me.’ I have to admit that I was worried, because Neal might make us sound a bit ‘retro-Beard.’ But the tracks turned out really well.”

Co-produced by Al Morse, Rich Mouser and John Boegehold (who once again also has a hand in the songwriting process as he has done since 2003), the album again sees Spock’s Beard stretching out into new musical areas. “This happens with every album we do. They each sound different from what has gone before. I think BRIEF NOCTURNES… is sonically superior to anything we’ve done before. Maybe part of the reason for this is that we spent the best part of a year working on it. Not in one stretch, but we’d go into the studio, do some recording, then take a break and return for some more work. That would give us a little time to live with the songs and have time to make changes when necessary.

“Inevitably, there are some supreme, standout moments on the album. One of these is ‘Afterthoughts,’ which is the latest in the ongoing series of songs in the ‘Thoughts’ cycle. It’s quirky, with four-part vocal harmonies which are reminiscent of Gentle Giant. And then there’s ‘Submerged.’ Ted had originally written and recorded this for his solo album WAY HOME (released in 2007), and it’s a real stadium rocker. We’ve adapted it to our own sound, but still stayed faithful to Ted’s original arrangement. I wouldn’t say it’s strictly Prog Rock, but fits what we do and is a great song.”

As always, Spock’s Beard take fans on a irresistible journey. And Meros says the band are also fully aware of ensuring the songs aren’t too overproduced. “There was a stage when we went over the top with orchestrations, and that made it impossible to recreate the songs live without a lot of help. Now, we ensure everything you heard on the album can be played onstage.”

So, what does Meros hope fans will get out of BRIEF NOCTURNES AND DREAMLESS SLEEP? “Well, some will be shocked that Neal is involved. But I hope they appreciate the musical surprises here. This album is quirky, edgy, reminding us a little bit of older times in the band, but also taking us further forward. I am proud of what we’ve done. I believe this is the way Spock’s Beard should sound in 2013.”

THE LEGEND OF GOODY COLE tells the true story of Eunice “Goody” Cole, who was convicted of witchcraft in the small New England town of Hampton, New Hampshire in the year 1656.

After serving the better part of 15 years in a Boston Jail, Eunice returned to Hampton to find that her husband had died and the town had seized their 40-acre farm. Frail and elderly, she was given a small shack on the marshland outside of town to live out her final days.

Upon her death she was hurriedly buried in a shallow, unmarked grave, with a stake through her heart to keep the evil spirits from escaping. Her ghost has been reported to wander the town at night searching for her grave stone.

This captivating tale is brought to life through the powerful, lush, energy filled music that Telergy creates, and transports the listener on a journey they will never forget.

Telergy is a completely independent project that receives no support from a major record label. Crowd funding is the only way to cover the large costs of mastering and duplication.

A portion of the profits from this album will be donated to the Hampton New Hampshire Historical Society in an effort to update and restore Goody Cole’s currently unmarked memorial stone.

Founded in 1997, Stala & So. is known for melodic rock tunes and a positive attitude.

The band has had the freedom to follow their own direction with their music and live performances while entertaining audiences and gathering lots of fans from all over the world along the way. The ’70s and ’80s glam rock bands, such as Sweet, T-Rex and ZIGGY STARDUST-era David Bowie, have had a strong influence on the band’s image. Stala & So. is making music professionally and also having fun with it. The late Finnish comedian, Spede Pasanen, said: “The main thing is to have FUN!” This has been, and continues to be, the guideline for the band as well.

In the beginning of 2011 the band became familiar to the Finnish TV-viewing people by taking part in the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest. They made their way to the national finals. There is also one ESC 2006 winner in the band’s lineup. After the Eurovision show it was time for the Finnish release of their self-written, -recorded and -produced debut album IT IS SO.

On October 24 the Japanese record company, King Records, released the IT IS SO. album in Japan and Southeast Asia. The German-based music company, Music Buy Mail, released the album in Europe and South America on September. In the fall of 2011 the band recorded five new songs and those were released as an EP, titled GIMME FIVE.

The band toured in Europe with Vain (US) throughout March 2012. This was Stala & So.’s first international tour and they played in countries like Great Britain, Germany, Belgium and Scandinavia. The songwriting and the pre-production for the new album began immediately after the European tour. The American top producer, Beau Hill, contacted the band and wanted to do some co-operation. Beau Hill has produced several multi-million selling album in the hard rock history, from the bands like Ratt, Europe, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister and Warrant. As a result of this fruitful co-operation with Stala & So., Beau Hill mixed the first single, “Rock Until I’m Done,” from the upcoming album. It was released on November 7, 2012.

PLAY ANOTHER ROUND is the second outing for the band, and has some great melodies.

This is Stala & So. for your listening and viewing pleasure. Enjoy the ride!

ON FIRE is the smoldering new album from Mastercastle. ON FIRE consists of nine tracks of melodic heavy metal with neo-classical influences from a band that has rapidly forged a glowing reputation thanks to their previous three releases.

Led by the powerful vocals of Giorgia Gueglio, the virtuoso guitar of Pier Gonella and driving bass lines of Steve Vawamas, ON FIRE marks the first release with one of the world’s most respected drummers John Macaluso (Ark, Yngwie Malmsteen, and James LaBrie). This new addition has given the band a kick up the proverbial backside taking their unique brand of metal to an even higher plateau. On the band’s new member Pier Gonella comments, “John gives us great energy because from the first time he heard our music he was really impressed. He participated in the composing process and his vast experience was a great help for the album’s production.”

Once again all lyrics were composed by Giorgia Gueglio, “I started the lyrics with the intention of writing a concept album with the title METALS, concerning metals in metallurgy, chemistry, alchemy and magic. But during their creation I found my lyrics full of sentiments, suffering and emotions. So METALS became too cold. Many tracks have a title with a metal within, but these are ‘warmed’ by blood, my/our human warmth, the passion of making music in a difficult world. So the album title was changed to ON FIRE. ON FIRE is a hot work, very human. On the front cover (also created by Giorgia) you can see a metal hearth. It represents our body that became real and can be hot or burn thanks to our emotions.”

On the new album Gonella comments, “I don’t feel a big difference to our previous releases, but I think this is our most (and best) melodic album so far. Our first album THE PHOENIX had a similar sound but with more evident classical influences. For the second album LAST DESIRE we moved to hard rock style and less neoclassical. Our third album DANGEROUS DIAMONDS was somewhere between those first two, with heavy riffs and powerful sounds. This new album has our best work in the vocal melodies and their presence, with a more ‘natural’ sound, especially in the drums. There are some classical influences in the instrumental songs, and generally it has a heavier vibe in many ways thanks to Giorgia’s vocals. The production is also heavy but never harsh and really emphasis the power this band has.”

The writing process for ON FIRE began three months after the release of DANGEROUS DIAMONDS in February 2012 shortly after John Macaluso joined the band. Many demos where recorded with John of the new material before recording for the album began proper with drums first being recorded from July 2012 to September 2012. Gonella recorded the album along with Macaluso aiming for a strong metal sound without the reliance on triggered samples and sounds. Guitar and bass recording came next before vocals were laid down. After the mix was also done by Gonnela and Macaluso before the album was mastered the album by Pier with Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio from late 2012 to early 2013.

ON FIRE sees release on Lion Music on 19 April 2013 with a promo video for the track “Chains” on YouTube, etc.

Following on from the recent success of INHERITANCE, the latest release from Italian progressive metal outfit Ashent, Lion Music are pleased to offer up a timely reissue of the band’s long out-of-print 2006 debut album FLAWS OF ELATION. In addition this new print comes with all-new artwork and the additional bonus of the band’s very first ultra-rare 2003 four-track demo!

FLAWS OF ELATION is a prog-power experience with some modern techno-thrash influences which are reflected in the way Ashent arrange and play guitars and drums. There are also some death metal references, in the mode the band use growling as backing vocals that have their importance in the economy of Ashent’s sound, wisely mixed with a modern prog attitude that uses avant-garde and gothic elements in order to create intense and dramatic music. The atmosphere is very dark, but the vocals of American vocalist Steve Braun are extremely melodic, supported by some beautiful orchestrations.

On FLAWS OF ELATION bassist Gianpaolo Falanga comments, “FLAWS OF ELATION was our debut, originally released seven years ago. Looking back now we wanted to share for the first time our complete musical vision for the long distance demonstrating that the progressive power metal could be created in a more aggressive and personal way than the usual clichés heard in the genre. We aimed to develop a balance between catchy vocals and huge riffing, creating true songs with interesting arrangements.”

On the change in sound from the bonus 2003 demos to the FLAWS OF ELATION album Gian comments, “At the time of our first official demo, the songs had a more ‘power-metal’ attitude, with less complex drum work and keyboards being more dominant. We decided to release the 2003 demos at the end of this reissue in order to underline the stylistic differences between the four songs in the original 2003 version, in comparison with the 2006 versions. You can clearly observe the renewed sound approach, with the introduction of seven strings guitars, more dynamic drum patterns and fills, but also a lot of choirs and harmonizations, with the aim to magnify the two sides of our sound: the aggressive and the melodic.”

Not only does the FLAWS OF ELATION album mark a refinement of the band’s sound, but also a change in personnel with new singer Steve Braun, drummer Davide Buso and guitarist Cristiano Bergamo joining the band between the album’s creation and the 2003 demos.

Ashent – FLAWS OF ELATION sees release through Lion Music on 19th April 2013.

-Vindictiv Signs With Escape Music

Swedish metallers Vindictiv has inked a deal with UK based label Escape Music Ltd. The band’s third album, CAGE OF INFINITY, was mixed by Lars Chriss (Lion’s Share), and will mark the recording debut of their new singer, Marco Sandron (ex-Eden’s Curse).

“With the new album we are heading in a more straight-ahead heavy metal direction compared to the first two releases. I made an effort to make the album cohesive, but as a notorious shredder, I couldn’t restrain myself completely,” laughs band leader and guitar wiz Stefan Lindholm.

Vindictiv released two albums so far — the self-titled debut in 2008 and GROUND ZERO in 2009. Apart from his main band, Stefan has been a successful soloist on a number of albums, among them record producer Tom Galley’s international project Phenomena and Soulspell. Other great vocalists Stefan has worked with include Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), Oliver Hartmann (At Vance, Avantasia), Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum) and Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring Of Fire).

Van Canto: Renew Deal With Napalm

After the release of 2011’s BREAK THE SILENCE (number 23 in the German long-play charts) and the headlining tour through seven European countries in support of this album, the vocal masters of Van Canto took the very first live break in their career. They used the time to work on numerous side projects — including Stef’s new Power Metal band Heavatar — and to recharge the batteries for their return in 2013! Besides festival appearances (e.g. RockHarz and Summerbreeze) the band will also release their fifth studio album in the fall/winter of 2013. In addition, Van Canto renewed their deal with Napalm Records.

Nadir / Napalm Records A&R: “Van Canto is innovative, unique and polarizing — that’s the best thing that can happen to a label. You must not let a band like this go, and that’s why we are proud that Van Canto continue to work with us. Together, we will shake the foundations of the Metal world!”

Stef / Van Canto: “To take a break for a full year was quite odd for us. Maybe there are bands that are satisfied with releasing an album every five years, but for us it felt quite unnatural to stay away from the stage for a full year. We have checked out new things, and are now more eager than ever to return with Van Canto. We are happy that Napalm Records will be the partner for our fifth album. The album will be the most heroic, heaviest and most symphonic album in our discography, and we cannot wait to enter the studio. Rakkatakka Motherf*ckers!”

Atrocity – OKKULT

“With OKKULT we want to start a very special album trilogy! OKKULT will be heavy, bombastic, but also bleak at the same time. The trilogy will not only consist of the most brutal and heaviest Atrocity albums in years, but also the darkest long-players in our history,” explains front man Alex Krull. On the one hand the band utilizes lots of bombast and big choirs, while on the other hand Atrocity offers pure, heavy, and authentic Metal songs that will get under the listener’s skin. All elements of the sound are in perfect harmony. The fulminant production has a sweeping quality and gives the songs the necessary power, atmosphere and brutality. Thus, it is possible to dive right into the lyrical concept. The concept is more than one-dimensional: The lyrics concern themselves with occult magic, mysterious places, to conspiracy theories and unsolved mysteries. John Milton’s visions of “Pandæmonium” become reality. “Death By Metal,” a mysterious story of long gone times, is Atrocity’s homage to their musical roots and at the same time their band hymn. The finishing touches for the gloomy atmosphere of OKKULT were provided by the Canadian sound designer Katie Halliday (known for acclaimed work on movies like “Saw V,” “Saw VI,” “Saw 3D (VII),” “The Devil’s Carnival” or “Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil.” She received numerous awards for her outstanding craft. The orchestral parts were recorded in Minsk with the Lingua Mortis Orchestra with Victor Smolski (Rage) as the conductor. Besides all the heaviness and bombast, Atrocity are demonstrating their excellent intuition for nice and catchy songs and wrote a real club hit with the catchy “Satans Braut.” Check out the band’s website for more details about the upcoming album and details about the first global treasure hunt in the Metal world!

“…Kingcrow bring this album to a triumphant conclusion with so much great and complex at times music and as with the other seven songs the vocals are also very inviting. 4.5/5” – Sea Of Tranquility

An extended framework program including hardcore comedy, several stands and culinary possibilities are waiting for all guests.

The following bands are confirmed:

Supercharger – Heavy Rock Newcomers from Denmark with warranty for party and two released albums are the right band to warm yourself up for the evening

’77 – The Spanish band has recently released their second album and will resurrect the ’70s for you! Often compared to AC/DC during the Bon Scott era, these guys rock every audience.

The New Black – This band already played as support of AC/DC, passed gigs in Wacken and Rock Am Ring and their third album is to be released in March. This band did everything right which is possible for a heavy rock band.

Motorjesus – This German band preaches and lives Rock ‘n’ Roll and weaves together different kinds of metal and rock to create a very sinful sound.

Psychopunch – These punk rockers from Sweden are in the business for more than a decade now and in the beginning of 2013 they will release their meanwhile tenth album… On a point where other bands have left long ago into direction commercial rock Psychopunch went on full throttle instead!

Between each gig German metal comedian Bembers will cause some bursts of laughter!

Great Hard Rock featuring Lee Small (Shy/Phenomena)!

Snowfall are a Scandinavian band that are based in a very cold part of Norway, hence their name and album title! “PB” is no stranger to the music scene as he used to be in Winter Parade who have previously released two fine albums. When Winter Parade dissolved PB and Tore formed Snowfall and at first used a Norwegian vocalist but when Lee Small (Shy/Phenomena) came into the scene and Snowfall really started to mature. Musically the band sound like a mixture of British and American ’80s bands such as Whitesnake, Giant and FireHouse but they retain a Scandinavian trademark too. So you get the best of all worlds! The latest addition to Snowfall is a man used to all things “Cold,” none other than Coldspell drummer Perra Johnson. To put the icing on the cake Martin Kronlund of Sweden was hired to twiddle the knobs (mixing and mastering) and of course the result is flawless.

The songs you will find on this debut album are a joint venture between the band members and it shines through in the quality of the material. A mixture of riffs, hooks and elaborate arrangements make the album an experience that will both grab you instantly and hold that interest long-term. An exciting thought indeed. Songs like “Don’t Drive Me Home Tonight,” “Wolf’s Lair” and “Citadel Of Hope: are all great examples of fine hard edged rock.

Snowfall are certainly a name to look out for in March, their debut is bound to cause an avalanche of publicity giving their future a much warmer prospect…

-Pitch Black Records: Five Years Of Metal 2008-2013

When we were putting together our first release back in 2008 we knew that we were going to continue doing this for a long time afterwards. This was obvious from the sheer passion and dedication we found ourselves putting into that first release and this hasn’t changed one bit for any of our releases that followed later on.

Five years might not sound much (or even 20 releases for that matter) but hey, we never bragged about being the biggest label ever! Besides, we pride ourselves in that what we lack in quantity we most certainly make up in quality! Each and every one of our releases has received a fair share of enthusiastic reviews, many of those releases have been included in “best of the year” lists by various writers and reviewers while others have received significant distinctions. Of course we’re not forgetting the fans and how they have all embraced Pitch Black Records and our releases so a HUGE thanks to you as well for being part of this.

During the last five years we have established some good solid relationships and friendships, both with business partners as well as with the artists we have had the honor of working with and releasing their work. Even more exciting things are happening this year, some of which include an important new distribution deal for North America (details to be announced soon), some great new releases (including new albums by Illnath and Arrayan Path) our new and revamped online store already in operation ( http://store.pitchblackrecords.com ) and our just-released free mobile app (currently available for Android via Google Play – http://bit.ly/XDecvf , coming soon for iPad and iPhone). We are also working on a compilation album that will be very special in lots of ways.

As part of our five-year celebrations we are offering a free 20-track sampler containing a song from each of our releases since 2008 (totaling in over one hour of music). We are offering this as a free download BUT… we are also offering the same compilation (again, for free) on CD! More details on how to acquire either version (or both) are available on our official Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/pitchblackrecords ).

We may be small but we definitely have a big heart when it comes to metal and metal fans and we hope this is evident throughout everything we do. We’re driven by the same passion and dedication as we were on day one and we don’t foresee this changing any time soon, so stick around, we’re still just getting started… \m/

-Two Side Moon Promotions Update

Barish Kepic – ADDICTION (Featuring Michael Bormann & Ferdy Doernberg)

Please find below the text press info for the brand new CD ADDICTION.

Band: Barish Kepic
Album Title: ADDICTION
Label: Independent/TSM
Release Date: Out Now!
Genre: Hard Rock/Instrumental

Barish Kepic is a Guitarist / Composer / Songwriter and Producer from Germany. Mainly known for his work with bands like Powerworld, Jaded Heart, Evidence One and Faro.

His tasteful style full of feeling and individuality as well as his versatility make him a sought-after studio and live guitarist. Kepic also works as an instructor at the Modern Music Concept school in Haag / South Germany.

Influenced by bands like Van Halen, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Kiss he started playing guitar at the age of 15. One year later he had already gathered his first performance experiences with the band Dark East and continued pursuing his goal of becoming a professional musician.

Besides his love for straight rock — songs with vocals, he discovered his passion for instrumental music and different styles, when he heard guitar players such as Al Di Meola, Carlos Santana, Larry Carlton and Eric Johnson for the first time.

“This experience opened a completely, very exciting, new musical world for me. After listening to my all time faves like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Gary Moore and Jimi Hendrix for some years, it was like starting a new adventure,” Barish comments.

From 1998-2006 Barish was the lead guitarist and one of the principal songwriters for the internationally famous German rock band Jaded Heart. He released five CDs with the band and toured all over the world. Other notable steps in his career include the bands Powerworld, Evidence One and Faro.

“I still love playing in bands with singers, but on the other hand, as a composer and writer, I always have so many ideas which are not suitable for vocals. And so the desire to do an fully instrumental album grew more and more over the years. One other reason for doing a solo album is, as a band musician, you have to do compromises all the time. As an solo artist I can let my inspiration flow and there’s more space for experiments and different styles and arrangements. There are simply no boundaries,” Barish says.

And the time was right for it back in 2009. Recorded and produced by himself, his album debut SENSITIVE CRUSH got positive reviews all over the world. It made it two times #1 in the USA-based Guitar Nine Records top sellers charts.

This was the first time for Barish promoting and distributing an album fully independently. Now, almost four years later, he was ready for the second strike. ADDICTION shows his keen sense for great melodies and compositions, again. Completely recorded and produced in his own studio and mastered by Bobby Altvater (Affair) in the Sky Studios in Munich.

ADDICTION is not just another instrumental guitar album — still very melodic and intense, it’s packed with passion and surprising moments. The technique is never the driving force in his compositions. “My aim is to reach the listener’s heart, to create atmospheres and emotions,” Barish says. Besides ten instrumental tracks, it includes an acoustic cover version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” with Michael Bormann on vocals.

Further guests on this album are Ferdy Doernberg (Axel Rudi Pell), who played keyboards on two tracks (“Book Of Destiny” and “While The City Sleeps”) and his longtime friend Chity Somapala (ex-Firewind, Powerquest), who composed the intro to the song “Lost In Samsara.”

Band Lineup:
Lead Vocals – Michael Bormann on “Little Wing”

Please find below the text press info for the brand new CD SWAGGER.

Band: Kyler
Album Title: SWAGGER
Label: 7hard
Street Date: Out Now!
Genre: Groove Metal

Kyler are located in the Black Forest in the south of Germany.

Here we have lots of wild boars, mountains, lakes and pretty girls wearing silly hats and there are at least as many idiots as anywhere else. The region is not famous for metal though, which is astonishing because the regional culture and the mentality of the people offer best possible prerequisites. Here metal must sound rough! Brutal and powerful… however also beautiful, passionate and catchy; in other words, it should be a musical reflection of the landscape, the weather or the people’s sense of humor. To get the heart of it: It must sound authentic. Independent!

And this is exactly the sound of Kyler.

The band was founded in 2006 first called Past All Hope. In February 2009 they produced a demo called SEX, BOOZE & METAL by themselves which mainly received good reviews.

After several gigs in the south of Germany and in Switzerland the band was renamed Kyler 2011 in order to get closer to the actual sound of the band which is somewhere between groove/thrash metal and southern rock. Kyler were inspired by bands like Pantera, Down, Machine Head, Hatebreed and Black Label Society. Also they love the sound of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and all the other great southern rock bands.

Having a new name and good songs Kyler went to Iguana studio in Freiburg in December 2011 to produce their debut album SWAGGER which might have been awaited by the rest of the world. During 14 days the 10 songs were recorded, mixed and mastered by Christoph Brandes. The album SWAGGER was released on September 14, 2012 on 7hard Records.

Humor, technical skills and above all the right “feeling” Kyler grants great entertainment. Due to this Kyler has continuously ranked high on lineups and are frequently booked as headliners for small festivals and concerts. Moreover Kyler has always been happy to support shows featuring bands as for example Agnostic Front, Ektomorf, Crushing Caspars, Undertow, Grantig, etc.

In fall 2012, they played a few concerts in their home area to promote the album SWAGGER. 2013 the band will play a lot of shows in Germany, Swiss and maybe the rest of Europe.

Also they have already started with the songwriting for the next album.

2009 – SEX, BOOZE & METAL (demo)
2012 – SWAGGER (7hard Records)

Band Lineup:
Lead Vocals: Marcus Keller
Guitar: Ralf Thomas, Benny Scherrer
Bass: Theo Kraus
Drums: Andi Biedermann

3. Tonight
4. Drag Me To Hell
5. Bounded By Hate
6. Buried Alive
7. Unloved

-Divebomb Records Update

Due Out March 12, 2013
Toranaga – GOD’S GIFT CD

Raped Ape

When people reflect on the Floridian metal scene of the late ’80s, groups like Death, Obituary and Solstice instantly spring to mind. Yet, there’s one band that despite never achieving the same glory some of their contemporaries enjoyed is still adored and respected amongst cultist metal fans all these years later. We’re talking about Lake Worth thrash heathens Raped Ape.

Named after car mechanic slang for something moving very quickly, Raped Ape did precisely that within the Southern Florida metal scene. Releasing three demos (1988’s IN APE WE TRUST, 1990’s PERPETUAL AGGRAVATION and 1991’s LOST IN MIND) and opening for some of the biggest metal bands at that time (Coroner, Sepultura, Overkill and M.O.D.). Eventually, the group entered the famed Morrisound Recording studios to work with producer extraordinaire Scott Burns to track their debut EP, 1993’s TERMINAL REALITY. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, this new Divebomb Records collection combines not only the original TERMINAL REALITY EP, but also four of the band’s long sought-after demo tapes all of which lead up to their signing to Century Media Records.

A must-own for any fan of underground thrash, this LAND OF BROKEN PROMISES limited edition set contains brand new mastering from original source tapes and a massive 16-page booklet with member-supplied scrapbook styled memorabilia encompassing Raped Ape’s entire history. GOD’S GIFT (Deluxe Edition) CD

Forging together in the UK metal scene of the late ’80s, Toranaga was a band that seemed destined for big things. Not only was their bridging of thrash with traditionally-flavored heavy metal songwriting instantly irresistible, they also had the major label muscle of Chrysalis Records behind them. But fate had other plans.

GOD’S GIFT, Toranaga’s 1990 sophomore album, should have propelled the group to headliner status. The record features barnburners such as the speedy assault of “Psychotic” alongside Black Sabbath-like stompers like “Black Is The Mask.” MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball” even gave album single “The Shrine” some airplay, but a series of bad record label decisions ultimately killed off any chance of GOD’S GIFT truly finding a wider audience. After recording an EP as a last-ditch effort to keep the band signed to Chrysalis, Toranaga pulled the plug on the entire thing.

Always on a mission to right the wrongs of metal history, Divebomb Records now presents this deluxe edition of GOD’S GIFT in newly re-mastered form. The album also features a brand new interview with the band by Noisecreep.com’s Carlos Ramirez, plus archival photos. If that weren’t already enough, Divebomb is including the aforementioned EP, which has never been released before. It’s the kind of deluxe packaging Toranaga truly deserves.

For Fans Of:

Founded in 2006 by drummer Joe Mullen and vocalist Tom Emmans, Odium was born in order to create a focused project centered on the themes of growth and attrition. After being joined by bassist Dale Burrows and guitarists Bo Louther and Andrew Fullerton, it was clear the band was quickly becoming a cohesive group of musicians that had found their strengths in each other’s abilities to contribute to the writing process.

Most convincing is Odium’s arsenal of musical weapons that contribute to their overall sound, which was properly harnessed by Canadian producer Greg Dawson (The End, Moneen, Choke) on both of Odium’s metal opus’ underlining the quintet’s penchant for writing metal songs that are as heartfelt as they are heavy with Odium’s emotional hybrid of epic crescendos and fiery heaviness.

Over the years, Odium has opened for such well known bands as Alexisonfire, The Agonist, Beneath The Massacre, Divinity, Moneen, F*ck The Facts, Fairwell To Freeway and Arise And Ruin.

-Tombstone Highway Premiers New “Acid Overlord” Song

Italy’s Southern/hard rock act Tombstone Highway has premièred “Acid Overlord” — second song off the debut album entitled RURALIZER, coming out March 12 in Europe and April 16 in North America on Agonia Records.

The song can be streamed at this location:

The music of Tombstone Highway is a classic blend of feisty stoner/southern rock and doom metal, with catchy guitar solos and old-school heavy metal parts that may remind of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Corrosion Of Conformity, Pride & Glory, Down, Black Sabbath, or even ZZ Top. Apart from hard rock instruments, the band uses also a banjo and Hammond organs.

The album will feature guest appearances by electric guitar virtuoso Mario Percudani (HungryHeart, Mitch Malloy), Hammond maestro Paolo “Apollo” Negri (Wicked Minds, Black Widow, Hasselvander) and Razor SK (Forgotten Tomb).

Joe Hasselvander (ex-Pentagram / The Hounds Of Hasselvander) commented on the release: “Absolutely cool! Good old swamp-infested blues metal!”

RURALIZER will consist of eight original songs and a cover of Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” with a playing time of almost 50 minutes. The album will be made available on digi-pak CD and digital download. RURALIZER was recorded at Elfo Studios by Daniele Mandelli who is also in charge of mix and mastering.

The band commented: “We’re very proud of how the album came out and we strongly believe it’s the perfect way to begin our legacy. People into heavy, ballsy southern-tinged Hard Rock should take note!”

Track List:
1. Old Blood
2. Acid Overlord
3. Graveyard Blues
4. Hellfire Rodeo
5. Ruralizer
6. Bite The Dust (And Bleed)
7. At The Bitter End
8. Mississippi Queen (Mountain cover)
9. Hangman’s Friend

-Orchid Reveals THE MOUTHS OF MADNESS Track List & Comments On Every Song!

San Francisco-based doom rockers Orchid have revealed the track listing for the band’s upcoming album, THE MOUTHS OF MADNESS, which is scheduled for a April 26, 2013 release via Nuclear Blast.

The band also commented on every song of the album — see below.

Check out the lyric video for the first single, “Wizard Of War,” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0nFQxXmmx4 .

1. Mouths Of Madness
2. Marching Dogs Of War
3. Silent One
4. Nomad
5. Mountains Of Steel
6. Leaving It All Behind
7. Loving Hand Of God
8. Wizard Of War
9. See You On The Other Side

1. Mouths Of Madness
“One of the first tracks written for this album. I was struck immediately by the soaring, yet totally sinister sounding vocals against that pulsing beat. A great opening number.” – Mark Thomas Baker, guitar

2. Marching Dogs Of War
“We really struggled with this one to get ‘the feel’ right. It’s a simple enough song on the surface but the subtlety of the shuffle can really be elusive sometimes. Do we swing on the light or dark side? Is it a slow enough tempo but not dragging? I’m very happy it didn’t end up on the cutting room floor since I think it is critical to the overall story the album tells.” – Keith Nickel, bass

3. Silent One
“The quintessential doom song of the album. The evil sludgy intro followed by the most crushing verse that I have ever played. My favorite drum song on the album.” – Carter Kennedy, drums

4. Nomad
“I’ve had the riffs for this song scattered about in my brain since we started the band. We’d jammed on different versions of the song and Mark always really liked it. One day it finally just fell together. I really like the feeling of it. It really feels like a journey through different emotions I’ve gone through about spending so much time away from home but then feeling restless when I’m at home… no peace.” – Theo Mindell, vocals

5. Mountains Of Steel
“A song that creeps into your soul. Very psychedelic imagery and a great heavy groove that makes it a blast to play. I’m always transformed by this song whether it’s jamming it with the band or just listening in my car.” – Keith Nickel, bass

6. Leaving It All Behind
“Man, this song was a pretty heavy one for me. I had the music for this one for a while and felt like it sounded really kind of sad but sentimental and loving at the same time. Honestly as funny as it sounds, I was driving and the Elton John song ‘This Is Your Song’ came on the radio. My mother has been really ill, she pretty much raised me on her own. I grew up pretty poor, just she and I really struggling to make ends meet when I was little. So this song just ended up being my way of saying thank you to her, not very evil. But I’ve never wanted to be in a band where I couldn’t say the things I wanted to, or feel limited by some poser identity of being a dark band all the time.” – Theo Mindell, vocals

7. Loving Hand Of God
“Started off as an Orchid take on traditional blues like Lightning Hopkins. When I heard the finished track, the vocals gave me goosebumps and the feeling was much more of a Victorian era England than a Mississippi Delta.” – Mark Thomas Baker, guitar

8. Wizard Of War
“This song just kind of happened in one night at practice. Mark had had this riff floating around for years that he and I would joke around about saying it sounded like Entombed or early Celtic Frost. I always really liked it and we’d jam on it periodically. One night we worked on it and I went home and wrote a chorus and a bridge and the next practice it was just done. It was just one of those songs that kind of wrote itself. It’s just a straight-ahead rocker, no frills.” – Theo Mindell, vocals

9. See You On The Other Side
“I always loved the riff, and especially the middle section, which grew to a point beyond what I thought was its potential.” – Carter Kennedy, drums

-I don’t have much of a column here but I do want to share something cool that Steve stumbled onto the other day. Well-traveled bassist Bob Daisley (Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Rainbow, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, etc.) gave a good long 90-minute interview back in March 2010 to Steve Flack of Guitar Heroes ( http://www.guitarheroes.com.au/ ) for Australian Guitar Magazine ( http://www.australianguitarmag.com.au/ ). The interview is available in three parts as follows:

Part 1 (26 minutes):

Part 2 (25 minutes):

Part 3 (40 minutes):

I’ve always found Daisley’s situation fascinating. He’s played on and (co-)written a ton of cool songs and albums, yet has somehow remained fairly anonymous and underappreciated for all these years. His ins and outs with Ozzy’s camp over the years weave quite the tangled web…

See http://www.bobdaisley.com/ for more.

-In my current playlist: Gamma Ray – SKELETONS & MAJESTIES LIVE (Armoury Records), Paragon – FORCE OF DESTRUCTION (Napalm Records), Holy Dragons – ZERSTORER (Pitch Black Records), Brett Walker – NEVERTHELESS (REISSUE) (Divebomb Records), Vanderbuyst – THE FLYING DUTCHMEN (Ván Records).
