-Queensryche Signs Record Deal With Cleopatra

New Lineup For 25th Anniversary MINDCRIME Tour Now Set In Stone With Addition Of Drummer Simon Wright And Guitarist Robert Sarzo

Queensryche — featuring original lead singer Geoff Tate at the helm — have just signed a worldwide record deal with Los Angeles-based independent record label, Cleopatra Records.

Although a lineup was originally announced in the fall of 2012, things have changed.

The band will now feature Tate along with bassist Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Dio, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot), guitarist Kelly Gray (Queensryche 1998 – 2001), keyboardist Randy Gane (Myth), drummer Bobby Blotzer and stellar new additions, guitarist Robert Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Hurricane) and drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio, Rhino Bucket). Wright will be in the studio and on the road with the band, while Blotzer will be primarily utilized in the studio.

Queensryche, with all members cited above, will soon be entering the studio for the first Cleopatra effort due out later this year.

The recording will mark the band’s thirteenth studio album and its first with this particular lineup.

Legendary guitar slinger K.K. Downing of Judas Priest fame will be making a special guest appearance on the forthcoming CD.

“I try to surround myself with the best players available and feel our longtime fans deserve nothing less,” states Geoff Tate. “I expect the forthcoming effort to be one of our best yet.”

New member Simon Wright expressed his excitement by stating, “I’m very much looking forward to being involved in the Queensryche project with Geoff. I’ve always admired his singing and songwriting and working with Rudy Sarzo again is going to be cool! Between this and my other project, Dio Disciples, I look forward to a very busy year!”

Beginning in early April, Queensryche will be hitting the road to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the band’s epic 1988 release, OPERATION: MINDCRIME, performing all fifteen songs from the album (including “Revolution Calling,” “Operation: Mindcrime,” “I Don’t Believe In Love” and “Eyes Of A Stranger”) along with other well-known hits and rarities from the catalog they’ve compiled over the past 30 years (see list of scheduled dates below).

Last November, Tate released his first solo CD in over a decade titled, KINGS & THIEVES (InsideOut Music) and toured with his solo band in support of the CD, which included dates with the legendary Alice Cooper.

-Blind Guardian: Update On The Orchestra CD!

[Note: This is from NuclearBlast.de. – Tim]

For many years, the members of Blind Guardian have talked about it — finally lead singer Hansi Kürsch gives a certain update about it: the orchestral CD! Hansi published the following news on their homepage:

Hi there,

…first a late, but still fresh, Happy New Year to everyone. After getting rid of some bonus pounds gained over the last few months due to live abstinence we are now getting ready for a very busy and exciting year of creativity and efficiency. Wishful thinking, you think? Blasphemy, I would reply! As most of you may have recognized, we have been busy all during 2012 with some additional touring activity and some extra missions, such as the completion of A TRAVELER’S GUIDE TO SPACE AND TIME, which is a great legacy. It features all of our material from the Virgin era in a new and accurate framework, beautifully designed by Felipe Machado. The whole box offers a great insight about that particular part of our career. Even though it took us more time than expected, we are really pleased with the final result. It’s something we are really proud of and something which you hopefully are going to enjoy as much as we do. I just got my sample yesterday, and am really blown away.

This, of course, has not been the only thing we were doing during the last year. For the sake of fun and leisure we were working on new stuff and progressed far quicker than we would have expected. Not that this means a lot in the generous production time frame of Blind Guardian. But it might secure a late 2014 release for at least one BG album. As you may have read in interviews we are intending to bring a long story to a well deserved and hopefully happy end. As already announced with A TWIST IN THE MYTH and also with AT THE EDGE OF TIME, apart from a regular album there finally will also be the release of the orchestral album. Why am I so sure about not being wrong again this time? I have no idea. Nothing new here, one could say.

The difference might be that throughout the last 18 months we have recorded 7 songs in Prague. There probably is a handful of additional songs to record during this year, but they are also already finalized with regard to composition. In theory we do not need any further songs for this album but ideas simply seem to flow endlessly… The reason why this album is still far from being released is partly based on the regular album, which we definitely would like to release first. At this point in time I am in a very tricky situation. How to continue from here? I think it is probably easiest to simply continue by telling you something about the regular album since this would be next anyway. Keep in mind that “next” is relative!

Well, we have started working on four songs and already were able to finish two songs musically. The working titles are “Encrypted Time” (I think this title is inspired by Andre’s passion for “World Of Warcraft” or so — I can only guess…) and “The Ocean” (here, Andre has been inspired by my undefined mumbling in the song). “Encrypted Time” is a modern speed metal song with some tribal aspects and some ’70s inspirations, while “The Ocean” is a very progressive (this time I talk about ELP meets Savatage art rock when I say progressive) orchestra dominated song which will give you a further glimpse of what to expect from the orchestral album. I am clueless about the right story board for “Encrypted Time” but “The Ocean” could be used as a theme opener for the orchestral project. We will see… The other four songs seem to turn out very special and obviously very different. Working titles: “The Irish Hill,” “Prophecies,” “Soundtrack 2” and “Midtempo Song.” I cannot tell you exactly about how many times we have had a song over the years which was first called “Midtempo Song.” I am pretty sure we are not the only band abusing this spectacular title over and over again. Thank God, the title is not copyright protected, yet. We would be in trouble then. Maybe it is and that’s the reason why it barely ever ended up as a title on the album.

Out of those tracks “Prophecies” is the one which is developed the most. It is almost straightforward, has a very strong pre and main chorus and offers some “Queensrychish” prog (this time I do mean Queensryche when I say prog) elements in combination with some Blind Guardian fantasy metal. A nice one. I’ll keep it short from here: “Irish Hills” might be a surprise with some Irish melodies, which none would expect in a song with such a name… “Midtempo Song” is a great song of misunderstandings and technical failures, the result so far is a little surprising to everyone involved and has nothing to do at all with a song entitled “Midtempo Song.” I enjoy this one a lot, because I cannot remember us doing something like this. The song is still in a very early phase and Andre has kept it hidden from me for a while now. “Soundtrack 2” has been the first song fragment for the new album. We had put that aside for a while, but it contains some very heavy elements, almost thrash metal like. Let’s see how this is going to end up. You see, there is a lot in the pipeline already. But there certainly will be more new stuff during the year. Even though we have already started to record some drums for the album at the end of the last year, the whole thing is going to keep us busy until the spring/summer of 2014 for sure.

Going to Prague to see how the orchestra songs come alive is a very special and intense moment for us. Thanks to “Sacred Worlds” and “Wheel Of Time” I can say that we have learnt a lot about scoring, recording and mixing when it comes to such music. You will notice a great improvement when you listen to the final result of this adventurous trip we have started so long ago. Last week some of us went there again to record “The Ocean,” a pure orchestral song called “Misty Mountain” and some more stuff. We once again had to realize how ambitious this whole project is and how time demanding! Luckily, everyone who is involved has understood, that there will be no compromises. We would never accept “second best” or “we fix it in the mix” here. This means that even though we can see the end of the road here, it still is a long and winding one and will demand our full concentration for the next 12 to 18 months. Charlie (Bauerfiend) and I already did some demo recordings for four of the earlier recorded orchestra songs sometime last year. We all consider this session and its result a very promising experience. Now I am ready to start proper album recordings for this one. I will do my best to finish most of the vocals during the year. This seems a very ambitious goal but is not impossible. I say that in the first days of January… Apart from the music and the concept we will also work on some additional surprises. Keep yourself prepared. One thing is for sure there will be nothing comparable to this on the market. It’s not a typical soundtrack, a typical musical, nor it is a rock opera. It is typical Blind Guardian — more or less without band. At that point, I would say this is going to stay unique until we will release part 2. The good thing: we already have some material for it and another 15-17 years before it has to be released. CHINESE DEMOCRACY was yesterday. 🙂

-earMusic/Armoury Records To Release Glenn Hughes’ LIVE IN WOLVERHAMPTON

2CD And Digital Audio Due February 12, 2013

NEW YORK, NY — On February 12, 2013 LIVE IN WOLVERHAMPTON, a 2CD set from bassist Glenn Hughes will be released (earMusic/Armoury Records). [MSRP $17.98].

Recorded in June 2009, this two-night celebration of Glenn Hughes’ music took place in his English hometown of Bilston, Wolverhampton. These nights were packed with hits and favorites culled from his rich musical career.

The first night included cuts from Hughes’ time as lead vocalist in Deep Purple. “Crave,” “Muscle & Blood,” “Don’t Let Me Bleed,” and “Mistreated” were all served up to an enthusiastic audience. The second evening, themed “You Are The Music: An Evening Of Trapeze,” was the first time that Hughes has performed songs preceding his days in Deep Purple. Tracks such as “Touch My Life,” “Black Cloud,” “Coast To Coast,” and “You Are The Music” were all unearthed from the Trapeze repertoire. Performing this music struck an emotional chord with Hughes, as former Trapeze guitarist Mel Galley had recently passed away. It proved to be a fitting remembrance to perform these songs, and the emotion of the night is captured beautifully on LIVE IN WOLVERHAMPTON.

From deep cuts to world-beloved legendary hits, LIVE IN WOLVERHAMPTON is a definitive live collection of Glenn Hughes history.

Hughes currently performs in Black Country Communion, a band he founded in 2009 with guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa.

-Circle II Circle: New Track Stream Hosted By BW&BK

Popular Brave Words & Blood Knuckles today brings fans a preview of “Killing Death” from American metal ministers Circle II Circle. The track stream comes in anticipation of the band’s forthcoming SEASONS WILL FALL full-length, set for North American release via Armoury Records on January 29, 2013.

Led by former Savatage vocalist Zak Stevens, the 12-track SEASONS WILL FALL promises to be the band’s strongest album to date both musically and sonically. Blending Stevens’ history and unique “Savatage style” with the fresh sounds he’s meticulously developed with CIIC, SEASONS WILL FALL is a commanding fusion of metal and hard rock, powered by his passionate melodic rock vocals. Colossal Pop calls Stevens, “one of the best vocalists in the rock world,” while Hardrock Haven opines: “This is a must-have album your music collection, especially if you are a Circle II Circle or Savatage fan or checking out the progressive metal scene for the first time.” The Age Of Metal agrees: “Circle II Circle have indeed exceeded their potential, and challenged their capabilities to the most on this record. A great hard rock album full of heavy riffs, high note vocals, and a pure rocking attitude all around it. One of the greatest albums to begin this 2013, no doubt.”

Details Stevens of the theme behind the track “Killing Death:” “The lyrics are basically about taking control of something that is detrimental or that may be shortening your life. It’s about ridding yourself of the things that you know are making your days numbered before they wind up actually killing you.”

Check out “Killing Death” at http://www.bravewords.com/news/197758 .

Formed in 2001, Circle II Circle has released five albums to date consistently progressing into something more powerful with each offering without sacrificing the signature sound fans around the globe have grown to adore. The turning point for CIIC came in 2012 with their monumental performance of THE WAKE OF MAGELLAN in its entirety at Germany’s legendary Wacken Open Air Festival. What followed was a sold-out European club tour with a full European jaunt set to follow later this year.

-Krokus: The New CD DIRTY DYNAMITE Is Slated To Be Released February 22nd, 2013

[Note: This is from http://www.krokusonline.com/ . – Tim]

Marc Storace – vocals
Chris Von Rohr – bass, vocals + producer
Fernando Von Arb – guitar + vocals
Mark Kohler – guitar
Mandy Meyer – guitar

Kosta Zafiriou – Drums
Mark Fox, Tommy Heart – Vocals

For almost 40 years now Krokus has stood for high-quality, honest-to-goodness, hand-made power rock. No other Swiss rock band sells albums and its back catalogue worldwide like Krokus. The band has already sold over 14 million records, toured the world and received gold and platinum record awards including the USA and Canada. The milestones in their rock career are dotted around the world: from Australia and the USA to Mexico, Russia, Japan and China.

But it hasn’t all been one long “high:” death, sickness and internal strife have pushed the band to the brink of collapse. The story of Krokus is like no other. Dotted with highs and lows, sell-out stadium concerts and sweaty club gigs, these five musketeers of rock have outlasted trends and survived treacherous US managers, tough splits, bad deals, shady lawyers, drugs, awful fast food, endless bus trips, disco, grunge, grotesque record companies and double-dealing advisors.

Today they are back in their original lineup plus Mandy Meyer and are stronger than ever on their new album DIRTY DYNAMITE. The band spent a whole two years working on the new album under the watchful eye of bassist and original founder Chris Von Rohr. “We didn’t spend all that time on golf courses or tennis courts. No, we just wanted to make the best album yet, the magnum opus of the new Krokus era,” says the hit producer. Guitarist Mark Kohler has this to add: “This is not just another Krokus album. I think we have definitely passed another rock milestone with this record.”

To reach this goal, no expense was spared. The band booked into the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. Krokus went back to their roots, back to where it all began with the Stones, the Beatles, the Free, the Who and the Bluesbreakers. Back to where the band headlined concerts in the Hammersmith Odeon, celebrating their first international success. “The atmosphere there is very special and we wanted to make the most of that,” says vocalist Marc Storace. Guitarist Fernando Von Arb is quick to add: “With DIRTY DYNAMITE we have recorded the urgently needed dirty kind of rock that no one plays in this country.”

-Tainted Nation: “Loser” Video Released

Tainted Nation, the new modern Rock/Metal outfit, are pleased to announce the release of the first video clip “Loser” to promote their brand new album F.E.A.R. The video can be viewed below:

The band — somewhat an “all-star” lineup of Pete Newdeck (Eden’s Curse) on vocals, Mark Cross (ex Firewind, Helloween) on drums, Pontus Egberg (The Poodles) and Ian Nash (Lionsheart) — release the debut album on January 25th 2013 through Massacre Records.

Vocalist Pete said, “This is a major achievement for the band and we are very proud of what we have done thus far. We believe the album is pushing Rock and metal into 2013 and further and that it has something new to offer. It was a pleasure working with Independent Element ( http://www.independentelement.co.uk/ ) for the video, and it was nice to break away from the standard formula of video clips around today. Hopefully it shows a band chemistry, a humorous side and a musical side to boot. Album reviews for F.E.A.R. have been pretty overwhelming to say the least and I am pleased to say we seem to be getting talked about. We look forward to the future.”

Tainted Nation are already booked for R-Mine Metalfest 2013 in Tongeren Belgium in June ( https://www.facebook.com/events/123709357795939 ) alongside Jorn Lande, Rapsody Of Fire, Nightmare and Raven Lord to name but a few.

Mark Cross added, “We plan on doing dates around the UK and Europe, which to us is very important… live shows are what this band is about.”

-My Soliloquy: Debut From UK Prog Metal Magicians Out Now

Full Album Streaming Via This Is Not A Scene

The debut album from English progressive metal magicians My Soliloquy, THE INTERPRETER, is officially in stores across the globe today through Sensory Records.

With praise of My Soliloquy’s diversified and creative professional approach rolling in from trustworthy prog/metal media outlets via reviews of THE INTERPRETER, the long-awaited debut has already clearly helped solidify the band’s name within the upper ranks of contemporary progressive metal.

To celebrate its release, today online metal portal This Is Not A Scene is streaming My Soliloquy’s THE INTERPRETER in its entirety. Check it out here:

Formed by multi-instrumentalist Pete Morten of British prog metal legends Threshold, the essence of My Soliloquy is pure forward-thinking metal — symphonic keyboards, shredding guitar leads, soaring vocals — all finely woven together through a blend of intricacy and melody. Following a pair of demos and an EP, Sensory is proud to finally unleash the newly-completed first full-length from this act. With nearly all instrumentation on the recording executed solely by Pete Morten, minus the drumming, THE INTERPRETER flows with over fifty minutes of grand musicianship, expertly mixed and mastered by Rob Aubrey, a mainstay of Marillion’s camp for many years.

“…sure to spark the interest of Threshold’s fans and they won’t be disappointed once they hear My Soliloquy’s excellent modern progressive metal… this release is more diverse throughout. 4.5/5” – Sea Of Tranquility

“…an exceptional album of progressive metal and strongly recommended. 4.5/5” – Dangerdog Music Reviews

“…there are echoes from Zero Hour, Silent Force, Manticora & obviously and influence from association with Threshold… with most of the songs clicking in at 6-7 minutes, there is room for this band to move around and really break the rules of simple song structures, yet honoring the knack to create hooks and catchiness. 4/5” – Ytsejam

-Eden’s Curse Begin Recording New Album

Multinational Melodic Metal band Eden’s Curse are currently in the studio working on their as-yet-untitled fourth album which is scheduled for worldwide release via AFM Records in late Summer 2013.

English drummer Pete Newdeck entered the studio in mid January and has now completed recordings on all fourteen tracks at Higher Studios in Tewkesbury.

German virtuoso guitarist Thorsten Koehne began guitar recordings this weekend at COP Studio in Bielefeld, Germany.

Among the fourteen songs selected for recording are “Evil & Divine,” “Break The Silence,” “Unbreakable,” “Great Unknown” and “Devil In Disguise.”

Mixing duties will once be performed by the band’s long time engineer, Pink Cream 69 and Unisonic bassist, Dennis Ward, whilst German graphic designer Thomas Ewerhard (Edguy, Avantasia, Jorn) completes the same winning team who worked on the band’s previous album, 2011’s critically acclaimed TRINITY record.

The fourth album will be the first to feature the band’s new vocalist, who at this point has yet to be named, from a meticulous audition process.

“The plan was never to rush this appointment,” states bassist Paul Logue, who further adds “Our aim is to find the best possible voice and personality for Eden’s Curse. Getting to know these guys is a fun but slow process and we are extremely excited about the quality on show.”

Further studio video diaries and news will be posted on the bands official sites at:

-Corrosion Of Conformity Writing New Material

Corrosion Of Conformity has begun writing material for their next album, the follow-up to the well-received self-titled record released via Candlelight Records late February 2012, the reissue of their EYE FOR AN EYE debut, and recently released Scion A/V EP MEGALODON. The album, untitled at this time, will again feature the trio of vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woodroe Weatherman, and drummer Reed Mullin.

Last week the band announced their first live performance for the New Year at the annual Metal Fest Chile on April 13th. It will be the first Corrosion Of Conformity appearance ever in Chile. Mike Dean comments, “We have been talking about going to South American forever and with Chile being a big source of so much of our Facebook traffic, I know it’s going to be epic. Another chance for us to do a festival with Down is always a very good thing.”

The festival follows the completion of the band’s recent US tour that concluded in southern California alongside High On Fire. The trio was also a featured participant on Barge From Hell that left Florida shores on December 7. Dean notes, “The cruise was pretty awesome. We had Rick and Jonathan from Torche masquerading as our crew and watching their antics alone was worth the trip. The seas were calm so there was no hurling over the bow.”

Corrosion Of Conformity continues to promote the self-titled album in interviews with media as well spreading word on their recently released MEGALODON EP. The EP, sponsored by the amazing folks at Scion A/V, is available for free now via various outlets. Dean says, “The EP was written, recorded, and released in two months time. It really challenged us in a good way. It feels good to get two releases out in one year and I expect that we will continue that level of productivity.” Continuing he shares, “The self-titled album is holding up very well for me. There is a wide variety of material there. It’s all definitely COC but at the same time everything is really a stretch for us. Within the realm of never being totally satisfied, I am very happy with how it came out.”

Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982, Corrosion Of Conformity quickly transformed heavy music. Politically charged and socially aware, the band has influenced countless others and today remains humble about their accomplishments. With over 1.1 million albums sold in the United States alone, the band continues to find new fans via non-stop touring.

“Thirty years into an expansive and rollercoaster career, Corrosion Of Conformity have done the major label song-and-dance and survived, and markedly changed musical directions more than once. Their latest isn’t a comeback album or an example of diminishing returns. It’s a testament to immense talent and the elusive endowment of staying power.” – Invisible Oranges

“In an era when doom metal keeps growing bleaker and artier, and hardcore skews ever more dire, Corrosion Of Conformity serves as a reminder that swagger, soul, and song craft still have a place in the heavy-rock underground. Corrosion Of Conformity, indeed.” – Pitchfork

“Corrosion Of Conformity will challenge as many fans as it excites. And that, of course, suits COC’s legacy, no matter which era holds your allegiance.” – Indy Week

-Falconer Post Band Update!

Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall of the Swedish folk metallers Falconer has just posted a band update.

“The Falconer is awake from slumber. After the darkest year yet I am once again in a writing mood, and what a mood! I guess something good really can come out of something bad after all. After rebooting musically from a year of creative vacuum there is a fresh hunger and optimism.

“The six songs completed so far are harder and faster and with more of an attitude again, some of the songs sound like they’re taken from the first album. After reading a book about deciphering and reading the language of runestones I really got some lyrical inspiration too!

“I must say that it hasn’t been this rewarding and promising for many years to write for a new album, without being carried away too far. The future plan is to concentrate on writing, re-writing and rehearsing for the new album, being sure it is as good as it can and not re-using too many patterns. All songs will be in English this time.

“We are just to begin rehearsing once again after a two-year break and I can’t wait to put Mathias through some tests and find out the speed limit of Karsten.

“Hails from Stefan and the falcons!!”

-SPRING BREAK Promises To Rock With New BlancaWhite EP Featuring Singers Jeff Paris And Paul Shortino

Bring on SPRING BREAK! On the heels of their critically acclaimed debut album, RESURGENCE OF ROCK, BlancaWhite has announced the release of two great new singles and an EP that are dedicated to one thing: “This year Spring Break is going to ROCK!”

The single and title track “Spring Break” is a total beach party, southern fried, boogie boarding, hard drinking, girls-in-bikinis rocker about spring breaks remembered and those yet to come. “Uno Mas!” is a rock anthem to those times when you need just one more: One more drink … One more score … One more party! The two singles headline BlancaWhite’s new EP, SPRING BREAK, which also includes four great party rock songs originally released on the RESURGENCE OF ROCK album. The EP is on sale now for $3.99 on iTunes.

“The new EP is the ultimate rocking soundtrack for spring break,” says BlancaWhite’s Ken Savage. “This is vintage BlancaWhite: hard partying, fun-loving rock with no other purpose than to have a good time!”

Following the model used on the RESURGENCE OF ROCK album, songwriters Savage and Austin Schell enlisted the talents of renowned veteran rock vocalist Jeff Paris (Cinderella, Vixen, Slash, and Keb Mo) and Paul Shortino (Quiet Riot, Rough Cutt, and King Kobra) to sing lead vocals on the new singles. Paris brings his trademark energy and humor to “Spring Break.” Shortino and his distinctively hard rock pipes absolutely rock it out on “Uno Mas!”

BlancaWhite has also launched official lyric videos for the two new singles on their YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/resurgenceofrock .

BlancaWhite is named after the world-famous bar in Matamoros, Mexico, just across from the Texas border where Savage and Schell grew up. The band’s signature style is ’70s and ’80s “classic” rock, sung by legendary performers from that era, with lyrics and themes for the modern day.

With “Spring Break” and “Uno Mas!,” BlancaWhite delivers two of its greatest songs yet, destined to appeal to the younger crowd heading out for Spring Break 2013. “This is what BlancaWhite is all about,” says Savage. “Making music that resonates today using the style and talent from rock’s greatest era.”

Mixed at Yellow Dog Studios (Green Day, Charlie Sexton, Meat Puppets) in Austin, Texas and mastered by Dave Collins (Black Sabbath, Quiet Riot, Linkin Park) in Los Angeles, BlancaWhite’s two new singles and EP were released on January 22, 2013 as digital downloads only on iTunes, Amazon MP3 and other digital outlets worldwide. Additionally, BlancaWhite has posted official lyrics videos for the two singles on YouTube.

Formed in the beginning of 1998 by Patrice Louis (guitar) and Thierry Dagnicourt (keyboards), Shannon plays melodic hard rock that sticks to the skin. During the spring of 1998, the band enrolled ex-Jannylee singer Olivier Del Valle behind the microphone, then bassist Claude Thill (ex-Der Kaiser) and drummer Maxence Pilo (ex-Heavenly) to finally complete the lineup.

Shannon’s eponymous debut album was released in November 2003 on the Anvilcorp label and distributed by Wagram. It has been unanimously praised and was regarded by the international press as one of the most impressive and brilliant records of the year in the classic ’80s US melodic rock style. With catchy hook lines, infectious choruses and a groovy and powerful rhythm section, Shannon is the perfect alchemy between classic US melodic hard rock and typical European influenced NWOBHM sound, delivering a music as powerful as melodic.

In the middle of 2005, Shannon saw their first lineup changes with the departure of Claude and Maxence, immediately replaced by Nicolas Fixy (bass) and Benjamin Bergerolle (drums), both formerly in the French progressive outfit Tai Phong.

WORLD OF DESIRE, a five-track demo EP, was released in 2007. The band played several shows to present the new songs and were selected to play before Gotthard at the Raismes Festival. ANGEL IN DISGUISE was released in 2007, the band’s second full-length album, even more powerful than their debut.

Prior to beginning CIRCUS OF LOST SOULS Nicolas and Benjamin decided to leave the band and were replaced by ex-Square Philippe Sassard and Jean-Marc Anzil.

Some rocking guests have made awesome backing vocals and duet on this release: Harry Hess (Harem Scarem), Tony Mills (Shy, TNT), Paul Sabu, Praying Mantis & Sideburn members.

-Scorpion Child Signs To Nuclear Blast, Announces Album Details!

Attributes in music are known to be cyclical. Every few years, a band comes along who borrows just enough from the revered past to bring a new infusion of vitality to the musical present. Scorpion Child’s sound invokes a time when guitar-driven rock ruled radio’s airwaves, when being hypnotized by a front man and his band mates in a concert arena was one of life’s ultimate main events. A five-piece from Austin, Texas, Scorpion Child have spent the last few years perfecting both their songwriting and stage show. Guitarists Chris Cowart and David Finner deliver their finessed twin guitar attack with experience older than their years; bassist Shaun Avants and drummer Shawn Alvear are steadfast sentinels of their driving rhythm section; and lead singer Aryn Jonathan Black fronts the psychedelic rock cavalry with a passion & voice reminiscent of the early eras of Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio.

“I’ve always wanted to hear new musical ingredients within a classic heavy sound,” states vocalist AJB. “It’s great to witness captivating performances where both the live show and the band’s recorded material can complement one another. The heavy-prog sounds of Uriah Heep, Hairy Chapter, and the epic delivery of early Rainbow showcases these crossovers brilliantly and gave us all honest — yet relentless — sonics to aspire to. That’s why it’s important for us as a band to maintain spontaneity while putting a special emphasis into integral hooks.”

This May, Nuclear Blast will release Scorpion Child’s self-titled, full-length debut. Produced and arranged by Chris “Frenchie” Smith (The Answer, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead…), the album uses analog recording technology to organically capture a hybrid of nine hook-filled chapters of heavy psych rock. The goal? To breathe new life into a neglected yet still important musical heritage.

Dangerous guitar riffs, soul-ridden bass lines, and thunderous drums with powerful rock vocals as lead conductor convey the on-stage swagger of Scorpion Child and will prepare you for the live experience awaiting you when the band tours the US and Europe throughout 2013.

-The New Australian Rock Sensation De La Cruz To Unleash Their Debut Album STREET LEVEL, Out On Frontiers In March

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of De La Cruz’s debut full-length album STREET LEVEL on March 22nd in Europe and March 26th in North America.

Hailing from the Gold Coast, Australia, De La Cruz are easily one of the most promising Arena Hard Rock bands to come out of underground scene. They came to the attention of the fans when Geoff Barton of Classic Rock Magazine described their sound: “like a Pomptastic, Hyper-active Leppard!” in his review of the band’s self-financed EP.

De La Cruz are born from the meeting between guitarist Casey Jones — a guy born and raised with ’80s Rock Music — with Auckland born singer Roxxi Catalano. With Catalano’s air-raid siren vocals, street level attitude and Jones fretboard melting riffs and string-searing shred, the pair instantly clicked musically and through a shared passion for ’80s arena-style rock and musical respect the dream was started, Jones and Catalano going on to record several demos via the Internet over the next few years, until they put together the right lineup, adding Rory Joy on guitar, Grant Daniell on bass and Lacey Lane on drums.

“This album talks about our highs, the lows, the parties and all of the crazy times we’ve had!,” says guitarist Casey Jones. “We aimed for a killer album to introduce De La Cruz to the world and this is the height of our musical existence thus far and we cannot wait for everyone to have the CD in their hands — This is De La Cruz!”

The band has kept the musical coordinates of their debut EP and developed into something new and exciting. “De La Cruz means anthemic Rock!” continues Casey, “We make Hard-hitting-YELL- IT-OUT-LOUD-arena-rock with a blast from the past and a twist of something new!” So get the party started and enjoy STREET LEVEL which promises to be one of the Hard Rock highlights of the season and certainly puts on the map one of the most promising bands of the globe.

Anticipated by the digital release of the awesome first single “Cherry Bomb” on February 4th, STREET LEVEL’s final track listing will include the following tracks:

1. Street Level
2. Girls Go Wild
3. Turn It Up
4. Legions Of Love
5. Gimme Love
6. Cherry Bomb
7. Dreaming
8. Invincible
9. Worlds Collide
10. S.E.X.
11. Set The Night
12. Shine

The band shows no sign of stopping with the boys currently setting their sights firmly on rocking the global arena into 2013. “De La Cruz will be hitting the road real soon! We’re going to be heading to the USA Mid this year on a coast to coast tour! We’re also looking to tour Europe, Japan and Australia shortly after! It’s going to be a wild ride!” concludes Casey.

-Australia’s Babyjane Ink Deal With Z Records

We are proud to announce that Australia’s Babyjane have inked a multi-album deal with England’s Z Records. Upon hearing material that was sent into the label an offer was immediately made after the album instantly grabbed everybody’s attention at Z’s office. Fans of Lillian Axe’s classic LOVE + WAR album will drool over the forthcoming album MAKE IT SICK which will be released during March 2013.

Babyjane, Australia’s most explosive hard rock act, have come out of the rusty gate with all guns blazing…

Andy Smith (no singer comes closer to the swagger of Jagger and the presence of Plant than THIS one); John Gerasolo (rock’s next guitar hero — forget the Top Hat); Paul Judge (a moody Sid Vicious who can really play the bass) and Nik “Animal” Kats (the bombast of John Bonham meets the terror of Tommy Lee) unleashed their debut scorcher ARE YOU LISTENING in 2011. Mixed by famed American producer Michael Wagener (Metallica/Janet Jackson/Ozzy Osbourne/Extreme), it’s hard rock at its absolute best (including “can’t stop singing it” classic “Can You Keep a Secret?”).

A rousing support gig with Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach in 2008 left the word on everyone’s lips that Babyjane “are the band to watch.” Recently, they’ve gone from strength to strength — securing airplay on American radio, global release of AYL, regular rotation on WA’s number one radio station 96FM and over 5,000 YouTube views of their clip single (“Are You Listening”).

Now, Babyjane have stepped it up a notch. The 11-track second album, MAKE IT SICK, was recorded in Nashville, 2012 with Michael Wagener taking the reigns from start to finish — the end result is what one industry insider has described as “the most balls-to-the-wall rock album since Guns N’ Roses’ APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION,” with one-time Motley Crue/Union singer John Corabi making a screaming guest appearance on the title track.

#1 rock website Blabbermouth.net has made Babyjane front-page news three times (covering Corabi’s appearance and previewing the album). Featuring a sound only a world-class producer can muster, hugely hooky tracks like “Bad Woman” and “Ruby Roulette,” and a well-oiled four-piece band behind it, Babyjane are ready to step up to the big league.

-King’s Call Recruit New Lead Singer

GERMANY — The search is over for German based rockers King’s Call, they have recruited Mike Freeland to sing on their forthcoming new album LION’S DEN.

King’s Call is a melodic rock outfit that’s the brainchild of Greek-born Alex Garoufalidis (guitars, vocals), who is joined by Azerbaijan native Asec Bergemann (drums) and Germany’s Andreas Kramer (bass), and now the lineup will be completed with Mike Freeland hailing from the UK.

King’s Call’s search for a new singer went on from Germany, Scandinavia to the States and even Brazil but found Mike Freeland basically in their backyard. As it turns out while laying down the tracks producer Chris Tsangarides introduced Mike Freeland to the guys and they hit it off straight away.

Mike Freeland is known for his work fronting legends Praying Mantis, also the band More, and takes on this new challenge. The new adventure with King’s Call will not interfere with Mike’s other bands and he is looking forward to work with his new band mates and help them to conquer the melodic rock scene all over the world.

The Euro rockers recorded the new album LION’S DEN in the Ecology Studios with top producer Chris Tsangarides (Gary Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy) and are in the final stages of mixing their next epic. The new recording will be the follow-up album to their 2011 debut album DESTINY (Mausoleum Records). More news about the release date will follow shortly.

See the band’s video from the single “All You Can Do” on YouTube:

DESTINY is still available through Mausoleum Records or the band’s website.

Already in the first quarter, this record can doubtlessly be ranked among this year’s best releases of its genre!

Today, the thrashing youngsters proudly present the album’s first single entitled “Trash All Over You” — a song that perfectly captures what Lost Society are all about: speed, toughness — and huge fun! Band leader Samy Elbanna comments:

“Many people have asked us why we misspelled the song title — we always give the same answer: It’s not about the thrash genre, but depicts how the whole world is collapsing on you. All the problems in the world seem to pile up and you get trashed all over. The song carries the feeling of being mad at everything and everyone at the same time — it’s something we all can relate to.”

Produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Apocalyptica), with special guest appearances by members of Die Apokalyptischen Reiter and legendary Finnish singer/actor, Vesa-Matti Loiri, UNSUNG HEROES continues to earn praise from critics and fans domestically and abroad. “…Mount the longboats, light the torches, and prepare for battle,” warns Metal Injection, while Outburn gushes, “UNSUNG HEROES is a totally solid entry ionto the hallowed halls of Valhalla made by a band that knows what it’s doing,” commending its “epic scope and reliance on catchy melodies.” Stereokiller boasts, “This is nothing short of amazing, beautiful in every way possible.” Elaborates Blistering in an 8/10 rating: “Ensiferum weren’t necessarily the first band out of the epic/folk gate, but they’re probably the best… One jaunt through 2009’s thoroughly captivating FROM AFAR supports that notion, as the Finns were able to brandish a mighty sonic sword that kept the speed on 10, the jovial acoustics ‘a hustling, and above all else, managed to bring a sort of mild sophistication to a style that is usually anything but. Essentially, Ensiferum doesn’t play the stupid, folk metal game, and on UNSUNG HEROES, they manage to stay the course with sterling results.”

-Swedish Doom Metallers Memory Garden Finish Recordings On New Album And Announce Album Title!

Swedish epic Doom Metallers Memory Garden has finished the recordings for their upcoming fifth album DOOMAIN!

DOOMAIN was recorded Annoying Sound Factory & SolnaSound Recording by the band with a little assistance engineering from Mike Wead (King Diamond) during the lead guitar sessions. The mix was done by Dan Swanö at Unisound.

Comments the band: “The recording of DOOMAIN must be the most relaxed album session we’ve ever done. We recorded most of the album ourselves in our own studio and took the time we wanted and needed to get it done. Dan Swanö helped us getting the rig together and he provided us with the tools to do it and from there we did it ourselves. The lead guitar sessions were done at SolnaSound Recording by Simon & Mike Wead. When it all was done it was sent to Dan Swanö and Unisound for mix and mastering. The final album is amazing and we are so thrilled to get it out to all of you.”

And about the album title: “We wanted a short and effective title to this album. It’s a little game of words referring to the style of music we play ‘Doom metal’ and the actual word Domain. We see this album as a statement of what Memory Garden stands for music wise and this album is certainly down our alley, it’s in our DOOMAIN.”

DOOMAIN will be released the 12th/15th of April via Metal Blade Records in Europe on vinyl and as a Digi-CD!

Memory Garden just recently resigned to Metal Blade Records.

Memory Garden was founded in 1992 in Sweden and have since then released four albums, two of them under the flag of Metal Blade Records (VERDICT OF POSTERITY in 1998 and MIRAGE in 2000).

Excellent guitar harmonies and the classic clean vocals of Stefan Berglund are the outstanding trademarks of this highly talented outfit.

Memory Garden:
Stefan Berglund – Vocals
Simon Johansson – Lead Guitars
Andreas Mäkelä – Guitars
Johan Fredrikson – Bass Guitar
Tom Björn – Drums

The landing page for DOOMAIN featuring the album art and the first new song will be released soon. Stay tuned!

-Mike Oldfield Releases New Studio Album TUBULAR BEATS

Re-Worked And Re-Mixed Together With Producer Torsten “York” Stenzel, On February 5th, 2013 Via earMUSIC

Album Includes Brand New Song “Never Too Far” Featuring Tarja Turunen

NEW YORK, NY — earMUSIC/Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce the release of TUBULAR BEATS, the brand new re-mix album by Mike Oldfield. The album will be released on February 5th, 2013 and will include the most popular songs by Oldfield who has worked on new arrangements and new sounds for his compositions. [MSRP $13.98]

All tracks have been re-worked from the original multi-track recordings and re-mixed together by Mike Oldfield and multi-platinum awarded German producer Torsten “York” Stenzel. Having previously worked together, the duo fused their style in a full elaborate project for the first time, embellishing Oldfield’s most famous songs with the aid of modern electronic music.

Newly recorded guitar parts by Oldfield have been added to the mix, and a brand new song featuring ex-Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen closes the album on a high note.

Classics like “Tubular Bells,” “To France,” and “Moonlight Shadow” shine again through fresh and danceable new versions. Mike Oldfield kept creative control throughout the whole production and despite the “new dress” the songs managed to keep the original melodies and structure intact, being brand new at the same time.

“Never Too Far” is a brand new song featuring singer Tarja Turunen who not surprisingly is offering one of her most emotional performances ever, as Oldfield is one of the singer’s heroes.

Tarja explains: “It was such a pleasure to work with Mike Oldfield. The song turned out to be even better than I could have ever expected. Mike has a vast career and experience in pop, instrumental and electronic music. I love his music and his personal guitar sound.

“My work in this song was inspired by Mike’s ‘Islands’ featuring another of my youth idols: Bonnie Tyler,” continues Tarja. “A way to thank them for the nice melodies I grew up with was to add a line from their hit. And I believe Mike liked the idea too. That’s how ‘Never Too Far’ was born. Hope that you enjoy the song as much as I do.”

Track Listing:
1. Let There Be Light (York Remix)
2. Far Above The Clouds (York Remix)
3. Ommadawn (Mike Oldfield & York Remix)
4. Guilty (Mike Oldfield & York Remix)
5. Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield & York Remix)
6. To France (York & Steve Brian Radio Mix)
7. Northstar (Mike Oldfield & York Remix)
8. Moonlight Shadow (York & Steve Brian Radio Mix)
9. Guilty (York & Mike’s Electrofunk Remix)
10. Tubular Bells 2 (Mike Oldfield & York Remix)
11. Never Too Far (new song, with Tarja Turunen)

About Raven Black Night:
It was late 1999 when Jim Petkoff, The White Knight (guitar/vox), and Rino Amoriono, The Raven (guitar), met over a cold beer in Adelaide, South Australia: the city of churches and where AC/DC found Bon Scott. This would mark the beginning of Raven Black Night’s campaign to bring their traditional metal sound to a worldwide audience.

After deciding to form a doom/heavy metal band, they enlisted Matt Spencer, The Black Knight (bass), and Jeremy, The Godfather (drums). They began building a formidable live reputation, with a style of metal that appealed to many varieties of metal heads in their home town. With their stage adorned with swords, shields, and candles, they spent 2003-2006 criss-crossing Australia, performing at various metal festivals and underground clubs. Drummer Joe Toscano was brought into the band and their first album, CHOOSE THE DARK, was recorded and released in 2005.

CHOOSE THE DARK garnered praise throughout Australia and Europe culminating into an invitation in 2007 to perform at the 10th annual Headbangers Open Air in Germany, where they band performed with Candlemass, Rage, and many others.

Several years of touring and festival appearances were to follow: Hard and Heavy summer nights, the Hamburg Ballroom, and more dates throughout Australia. In 2011 Jim and Rino, with Chris on bass, enlisted Matt Enright to record new material for their long-awaited follow-up CD.

Jim and Rino are prepared to take the Raven Black Night sound of true metal/doom rock to a global audience. A new partnership with Metal Blade Records and a new album will firmly place Raven Black Night on the world map of true heavy metal.

“Forever” Music Video

No good could possibly come out of the frigid Northern lands of Alberta, you say? Well, sorry to tell you, there’s an exception to every rule. Enter smoldering power-thrash five-piece Edge Of Attack.

Combining haunting vocals, shredding guitars, complex bass lines, furious drumming and choral and symphonic arrangements with surprising depth, Edge Of Attack has not only taken the metal scene by storm, but also by surprise. Having been featured in Revolver magazine, you’d think the band has surely been around for years, but truth be told, they’ve accomplished all this while releasing no more than two singles.

Representing the changes that have taken place and the reinvention of Edge Of Attack’s sound, the self-titled album, which was produced by guitarist/vocalist Jurekk Whipple himself and is soon to be released with Spread the Metal Records, is, simply put, a reawakening and rebirthing of power metal with thrash creeping its way into the picture.

Joe Hasselvander (ex-Pentagream / The Hounds Of Hasselvander) commented on the release: “Absolutely cool! Good old swamp-infested blues metal!”

The music of Tombstone Highway is a classic blend of feisty stoner/Southern rock and doom metal, with catchy guitar solos and old-school heavy metal parts that may remind of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Corrosion Of Conformity, Pride & Glory, Down, Black Sabbath, or even ZZ Top. RURALIZER will consist of eight original songs and a cover of Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” with a playing time of almost 50 minutes. The album will be made available on digi-pak CD and digital download. RURALIZER was recorded at Elfo Studios by Daniele Mandelli, who is also in charge of mix and mastering.

-Prog Rockers Fen Post New Video “Of Losing Interest”

Vancouver progressive rockers Fen have posted a video for their title track from their fifth and latest album OF LOSING INTEREST, released last summer via indie label Ripple Music to follow up their fourth release TRAILS OUT OF GLOOM.

“The song ‘Of Losing Interest’ broke new ground for us. We didn’t try to shape it into some convoluted or grandiose structure. We just let the riff be a riff and do its job and we kept the dynamics fairly steady throughout. At one point I considered titling the song ‘The Grump,’ based on the fact that the lyrics are from the perspective of someone who detests social interactions and does what he can to either cut them short or avoid them altogether. Overall, the video is a lo-fi attempt to reveal what might be inside his head,” comments vocalist / guitarist Doug Harrison.

To view the video, please visit the following link below.

“Of Losing Interest”

Their heaviest and most technical album to date, OF LOSING INTEREST is an album that revisits the band’s harder edged metallic past while retaining the melodic sensibilities that made TRAILS OUT OF GLOOM so alluring. Co-Produced by Mike Southworth, his fourth with the band, OF LOSING INTEREST is a contrast of technical virtuosity layered against warm low end organics.

1. Riddled (3:55)
2. Of Losing Interest (4:59)
3. Nice For Three Days (4:04)
4. A Long Line (4:43)
5. The Glove (3:23)
6. Drunken Relief (4:26)
7. Light Up The End (3:34)
8. Pilot Plant (6:03)
9. Snake Path (3:17)

Show Dates:
March 21, 2013 – The Electric Owl – Vancouver, BC w/ Marching Mind, Porn for the Blind
(kick off show for the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival, coming to Whistler April 12-21)

In January of 1998, in the mountain shadows of Nelson, British Columbia, a creatorship emerged called Fen. The road has been long for this dark-leaning band, which after more than a decade of obscurity, was finally ushered into the prog and metal fan’s psyche. This occurred in 2010, when Fen signed to California label Ripple music and released their fourth album TRAILS OUT OF GLOOM. The album garnered impressive reviews from bloggers and print magazines worldwide, including mention in the UK’s Classic Rock magazine and a perfect 16/16 score from the US authority on prog: Progressions Magazine. To follow up this attention, in May of 2011, the management of UK/Israeli prog veterans Blackfield invited Fen to open for them on the Vancouver stop of their North American tour.

To date, Fen’s music has sold in more than fifteen countries, and with the help of dedicated bloggers, two AAA-radio campaigns, and a music video for the single “Miracle,” the band’s following continues to expand. In surprising contrast to the dark nature of Fen’s music, their songs have been placed on HGTV (Home & Garden Television) and Animal Planet’s “From Underdog To Wonderdog,” among others. The song “Through The Night” will soon be available on the video game “Rock Band.”

Fen has performed at clubs and festivals throughout BC, and in the summer of 2011, took part in the Forest Symphony at UBC’s Pacific Spirit Park. Fen’s fifth album, OF LOSING INTEREST, will be available in August 2012, and is a return to the heavier aspects of the band’s sound. It is their second release under the Ripple Music label, and it brings together a band lineup first assembled in 1999.

Since then two years have passed and the time has come for the first “real” result of the new Øl lineup. CORELLO MOTELLO is a production, showing at first hearing that here each of the five musicians have left their mark. CORELLO MOTELLO is packed full of catchy tunes in crisp alternative rock and pop songs that despite their catchiness never appear boring or constructed. A foretaste was already released in June with the “EM” single “Heartbeat,” which various radio stations used as their official EURO song. Live Øl’s 2012 show is a show back to the roots, without loads of gimmicks. Just five guys who, after a year of production time are hot to perform the new songs live on stage.

-I haven’t done a column in a while but this was just too good to pass up. 🙂

Everyone knows I’m a huge Kiss fan. I mean, I was aware of them in the ’70s but I really fell for them hook, line, and sinker when I saw the video for “I Love It Loud” back in 1982. I was just starting to really seriously get into music, and that (now, admittedly, very cheesy…) video was just soooo cool. Then I saw the CREATURES OF THE NIGHT album cover with the awesome dark blue theme and glowing eyes artwork, and that was IT! I was floored when the CD version first came out sporting a dumb photo from the band’s makeup-free era on the cover. WTF?! I actually went out and found a vinyl copy of the album just so I could have a large size version of that killer original cover. (Luckily the band fixed this error when the album was re-mastered, as they restored the original cover art.)

So anyway, last week we were at my kid’s school for the annual used book sale fundraiser, and I found a little paperback book from 1979. Check out the cover:

Resemble any album art you know? 🙂 I was floored again. Did Kiss really rip off a children’s book for their cover??????????

And yes, I bought the book for a quarter.

-I was happily surprised to find the new Saxon CD, SACRIFICE, in my mailbox the other day. It sounds good after one spin. Watch for a review soon.

-And seriously now, what is Geoff Tate doing?

-In my current playlist: Saxon – SACRIFICE (UDR/EMI), Helloween – STRAIGHT OUT OF HELL (Sony/The End).
