-Kip Winger Launches Kickstarter Campaign To Record New Orchestral Work CONVERSATIONS WITH NIJINSKY

Funds Raised Will Pay A 60-Student Orchestra At Oberlin Conservatory In Ohio

Pledging Begins: Thursday, November 3, 10 a.m. EST

NASHVILLE, TN — Kip Winger has kicked off a 45-day on-line fundraising drive to record an orchestral piece intended for ballet using Kickstarter, the crowdfunding platform website.

The $33,000 donation goal will be used to pay the Conservatory orchestra, conductor, and engineer to rehearse and record CONVERSATIONS WITH NIJINSKY, Winger’s follow-up to his composition “Ghosts” for Christopher Wheeldon at the San Francisco Ballet. Taking place over a two-day period in January 2012, the rehearsals and recording will also be shot for a future documentary film.

The work was inspired by the life and diary of famed Russian ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. Winger says: “I conceived the piece as the accompaniment to the unseen dances of Nijinsky, whose career was cut short by schizophrenia.”

Scott Yoo, one of the most buzzed about figures working in classical music today, will conduct the student orchestra. “I’m extremely excited to work with Scott Yoo, he is one of the best musicians in the world,” said Winger.

Rewards for supporters include thanks on the project’s website, Co-producer credit and the opportunity to visit Oberlin, meet the principals, and sit in on rehearsals and recording.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, located on the campus of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, was founded in 1865 and is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States. The Conservatory is the only professional music school to be honored by President Obama with the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given by the United States.

See the campaign page and video here:

Musician/composer C.F. Kip Winger discovered his passion for music at the age of six. The multi-platinum recording artist may be known best for his success with Winger and his early days as a bass player with Alice Cooper. However the range and scope of his musical journey can be more fully experienced in his solo albums, THIS CONVERSATION SEEMS LIKE A DREAM, SONGS FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR, FROM THE MOON TO THE SUN and his most recent composition “Ghosts,” for string orchestra, piano and harp. Tucson Symphony Premiered the piece in 2010 followed by two successful seasons of “Ghosts” the ballet choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon for the San Francisco Ballet, earning Mr. Winger a nomination for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music.

Scott Yoo began his musical studies at the age of three and performed the “Mendelssohn Concerto” with the Boston Symphony at age twelve. After winning first prize in the 1988 Josef Gingold International Violin Competition, he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Avery Fisher Career Grant. He is the founder of the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra and Music Director of Festival Mozaic in California. He has conducted the Colorado, Dallas, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Utah Symphonies, and recently led the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Yoo received his B.A. from Harvard.

-Forbidden Announce New Drummer

Craig Locicero, Russ Anderson, Matt Camacho, and Steve Smyth of the Bay Area thrash band Forbidden are proud to make the following announcement:

“After a couple of grueling months of sifting through video auditions, we’ve finally got our man. Let it be known that on Halloween 2011, Sasha Horn from Chicago is Forbidden’s new drummer!

“There were so many great players throwing themselves out there and we were always encouraged by the prospects. We had nine different drummers out of the dozens of submissions make the trek to Oakland to give it their best shot. Those drummers included Eli Lucas (Petaluma, CA), Duane Timlin (Houston, TX), Jimmy Schultz (Los Angeles), Pat Magrath (Los Angeles), Gee Anzalone (Italy), Todd Hansen (Australia), Henry Moreno (Florida), and Burton Ortega (San Francisco). We can’t say enough about these guys and how much heart and guts it took to take the chance for the gig. Much love and respect to them! At the very least, we have some new friends and we know where some great new talent is.

“All of these guys kicked ass or they would have never made it through the door, but at the end of the day, it was a two-horse race between Eli Lucas and Sasha. We can say with certainty that if Sasha didn’t slay the way he did, Eli would have gotten the gig. Both are incredible drummers with HUGE upsides. Eli will go far in this business!

“Sasha, however, lifted us to another level. When he started playing ‘Infinite,’ everyone in the band immediately looked at each other and our eyes got bigger. It was something that Russ and I have not felt since Paul Bostaph first played with us back in 1986, when we were kids. Simply put, great chemistry! A sense of invincibility was in the room. Then we played ‘Forsaken At The Gates’ and it was over. No need to keep playing — we were stunned. In fact, some of our hands were shaking! That’s saying something. It was like gasoline thrown on an inferno!

“Now that we have our band back intact, we can start writing the next Forbidden record with the confidence that we have something special once again. Like Bostaph, Jacobs, Hernandez and Hoglan, Sasha Horn will earn his praise and respect from our fans. He’s Forbidden’s next great drummer and we are very proud to tell the world! We are truly inspired to out-do ourselves.”

New Forbidden drummer Sasha Horn (ex-November’s Doom, Ava Inferi) comments:

“This was an amazing opportunity from the get-go, to be able to throw my name in on auditions for a band that I’ve been an avid fan of since I was 12 years old. How does it feel to now get the chance to slay alongside them? Otherworldly. Truly out of this world. To just be considered along with the other amazing drummers from across the globe was a humbling experience in itself. And it’s because Forbidden is a band that wants to constantly take leaps and bounds up to that next level that I know this is the perfect union. When we got into that room and played together for the first time, the chemistry just went right off of the charts. That’s a good feeling to start off with.”

View a demo video of Sasha Horn on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2985zpdDDC0 and listen to a sample of his recording abilities at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h1zDGBh4kU .

-Circles Partner With Metal Hammer To Unleash Debut Video “Eye Embedded”

Australian progressive Metallers Circles have partnered with Metal Hammer magazine to exclusively debut their new video for “Eye Embedded” today on their website — click here to view:

The track comes from the band’s forthcoming single “Eye Embedded” taken from their debut EP THE COMPASS which is released via Basick Records on November 14th and comes with a re-mix edition, two B-sides and an instrumental arrangement.

The band have also put together exclusive footage that not only chronicles the making of the video for the track but gives fans a taster of the video to come. View behind the scenes here:

Filmed at Decent Exposure Studios in Melbourne, Australia, drummer and video director Dave Hunter describes their experience: “Shooting our first official video was something we’ve always looked forward to doing. We handled all the post production and VFX in-house and knew how we were going to tackle the animated shots from the beginning. We wanted to keep the theme consistent throughout the video and have that visual link with the cover art of THE COMPASS. The most time-consuming part was reviewing hours of footage to get the takes we wanted. When a song goes for roughly four minutes and you have this much footage, you can imagine what it’s like to sift through it all. Overall it was a great experience. So far, the response has been quite overwhelming and hopefully we can push it further with this video.”

Since their critically acclaimed debut EP was released in May this year via Basick Records, Circles have been hard at work building their profile worldwide — their studio jam video for “Clouds Are Gathering” reached the No. 1 spot on Scuzz TV, reached No. 2 on the Australian Metal iTunes chart, swept the review boards worldwide with praise for THE COMPASS and all whilst continuing to play countless gigs in their native homeland and begin work on their follow-up record!

“This might be the best new band you’ll hear all year. Truly epic.” – Metal Hammer
“Beyond world class.” – Blunt Magazine
“Circles are here to make a point.” – Rock Sound Magazine
“Melodies so catchy they are probably illegal in some countries.” – Terrorizer Magazine

Track listing for “Eye Embedded” single:

1. Eye Embedded
2. Eye Embedded (Big-F remix)
3. Silence (Prelude demo)
4. Beautiful Fascination (Prelude demo)
5. The Design (Instrumental)

The single “Eye Embedded” from Circles will be released by Basick Records on November 14th, available online via iTunes and all good online digital retailers.

-Martyr Launch Third Single “D.I.” Of Upcoming New Album CIRCLE OF 8 Exclusively Through Their Website! CIRCLE OF 8 Available Worldwide Now!

Dutch heavy metallers Martyr have launched the third single “D.I.” of their new album CIRCLE OF 8! Please surf over to http://www.martyronline.nl/ to check it out!

Make also sure to surf over to the landing page at http://www.metalblade.com/martyr to listen to the title track CIRCLE OF 8 and to check out the pre-order options!

Martyr is a pure Heavy Metal force from the Netherlands. During the five years that Martyr was alive and kicking (1982-1987), the band released two albums that are considered cult in the Metal scene of today! FOR THE UNIVERSE (1985) and DARKNESS AT TIME’S EDGE (1986) are classic Metal, a delight for those who love strong melodies, speedy riffs and a high level of technicality.

In those years, Martyr appeared on compilation albums from Roadrunner and Metal Blade, was voted Holland’s best new metal band in Aardschok magazine, has toured with several international acts and appeared on Sky Channel’s Monsters Of Rock.

Martyr disbanded in 1987, but reunited in 2001 to play the Heavy Metal Maniacs festival. Four years later, the band revived almost the complete 1982 lineup to play the Headbangers Open Air and Keep It True festival. The flame has been burning again and the band continued to play live ever since. December 2008 Martyr supported US Shock Rockers Lizzy Borden on their European tour. But also in 2009 and 2010 Martyr hit the European stages supporting great acts like Flotsam And Jetsam, Vicious Rumors, Jaguar, Evergrey, etc.

In 2009 the first new Martyr record in almost 25 years has been released. That’s when the new EP FEAR was coupled with a re-release of the classic FOR THE UNIVERSE album as a double digi-pak entitled FEAR THE UNIVERSE on Rusty Cage Records (RCR0017).

In 2010 and 2011 Martyr re-entered the studio between the live shows, by working on the successor for FEAR. A complete new album called CIRCLE OF 8, which will be released by Metal Blade Records in November 2011 worldwide, will be a significant impulse in Martyr’s revival. And by signing with Metal Blade again, the clan is back home!

CIRCLE OF 8 contains 11 new tracks and one oldie and fans favorite, “Speed Of Samurai,” which has been re-recorded.

While Autumn’s roots remain firmly planted in heavy rock/guitar-oriented soil, their branches are stretching out to more progressive musical genres and alternative approaches to the sound of individual songs. Guitarist Jens van der Valk elaborates: “In terms of sound we realized there were still leaps to be taken out of our comfort zone and into unthought-of possibilities. As a first step in the right direction, our main focus was on a more open, transparent sound, one through which the often multi-layered nature of our songs would be optimally channeled.”

Autumn needed not look far for a man to put at the helm with the right pioneering philosophy for the band to begin taking leaps: Erik-Jan Dodd, Autumn’s live sound engineer since the MY NEW TIME era, envisioned a more vintage approach for COLD COMFORT. An experiment the band was all too eager to embrace, explains guitarist Mats van der Valk. “If there’s anyone who knows what we’re all about and more importantly: what we could potentially be all about, it’s E-J.”

COLD COMFORT track listing:
1. The Scarecrow
2. Cold Comfort
3. Black Stars In A Blue Sky
4. Retrospect
5. Alloy

-Andromeda’s new video for “Preemptive Strike” is online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiSaakTpZ-o .

-Animetal-USA features singer Mike Vescera (Obsession, Loudness, Yngwie Malmsteen), guitarist Chris Impellitteri (Impellitteri), bassist Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Dio, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne), and drummer Scott Travis (Judas Priest, Racer X, Fight) dressed up in Kiss-like theatrical outfits and makeup, and playing covers of “Japanese anime theme songs.” The band’s self-titled debut is out now in Japan through Sony, and was produced by Greg Reely with all songs arranged by Marty Friedman (Megadeth, Cacophony). Track list (courtesy of http://www.cdjapan.co.jp ): “Uchuu Senkan Yamato,” “Gatchaman No Uta,” “Mazinger Medley,” “Makafushigi Adventure!,” “Thesis Of A Cruel Angel,” “Ai Wo Torimodose!!,” “Ganbare Dokaben,” “Pegasus Fantasy,” “Ike Tigermask,” “Kinnikuman Go Fight!,” “Yukeyuke Hyuuma.” Check out the video for “Uchuu Senkan Yamato” at http://vimeo.com/29984586 , and another promo clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC_ogjcHZ-E . Hype from the band’s site says Animetal-USA is “a spin on the original Animetal band launched in Japan by Anthem vocalist Eizo Sakamoto that was launched in 1996 and called it quits in 2006,” and that it “combines famous classic anime music with some original metal riffs, solos, vocals, bass and drums, as well as some very cool surprises. In fact, you will definitely hear a few familiar legendary metal riffs from some of your favorite legendary metal bands that gave their blessing, mixed with some new originals. Although this music is based on Anime, it has lots of original screaming vocals, shredding guitar solos, and a mean bad ass rhythm section.” See http://www.animetalusa.com/ for more.

-My friend Bill showed me an email offering the “Sweet Deal O’ Mine” package for Guns N’ Roses’ November 15 show at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL. For $135 you get four reserved seats, four sodas and four hot dogs, with all fees and service charges included. Then my wife saw something last night about $20 tickets being available for the show. Which prompted us to wonder what songs the band will be playing that night… “Welcome To The Half-Filled Venue,” “Used To Sell Out,” “Mr. No-Show,” and “November Pain” maybe?

-Doesn’t that Animetal-USA business seem, well, odd? I mean, a few of the clips I heard certainly rock and all, but it’s just WEIRD seeing Mike Vescera, Chris Impellitteri, Rudy Sarzo, and Scott Travis in makeup and superhero outfits. And it’s not like those dudes are just some faceless guys who need a paycheck — these are legendary, respected, and accomplished metal heads we’re talking about here! I hope they’re having fun with it.

-I thought it was unusual for Forbidden to name all the finalists for their drummer auditions. I’m just used to bands keeping that sort of thing private, but on the other hand the band members were pretty gracious and open with their praise for all the guys. Kinda cool, I suppose.

-Kudos to those who managed to read through the full track listing of that AFM Records 15th anniversary compilation… 🙂

-Seriously, read that Manowar thing at Metal Hammer. It’s good.

-BulletBoys reunion! Okay, is that *every* ’80s band now?

-In my current playlist: Lance King – A MOMENT IN CHIROS (Nightmare Records), Consortium Project – V – SPECIES (Lion Music), Doro – 25 YEARS IN ROCK (Nuclear Blast), Strange Karma – VOLUME 1 (FnA Records), All Else Fails – THE ORACLE: WHAT WAS, IS, AND COULD HAVE BEEN (Suicidal Bride Records).

ZEBRAHEAD – GET NICE! (A-/B+) Niji Entertainment Group, 2011
14 tracks, RT: 49:21
I shied away from this when I saw Ali Tabatabaee credited as “vocalist/rapper,” but thankfully Steve urged me to give zebrahead (yep, lowercase “z”) a chance. These guys are awesome! GET NICE! is a fun and cool album, a mix of driving pop/punk along the lines of Sum 41 or The Offspring but with distinct metallic undertones, ripping guitar from Matty Lewis (who also sings) and Greg Bergdorf, and absolutely killer bass lines from Ben Osmundson. The rapping is never up-front enough to bring GET NICE! into nu-metal territory, but instead serves to kick a few songs in the ass with the clever wordplay/lyrics. Every song has a highlight of some sort… “Blackout” and “Nothing To Lose” start off by blazing along with hyper-catchy choruses; the former has gang vocals and the latter has more of a summer vibe. “She Don’t Wanna Rock” is hilarious, telling the tale of an ’80s metal couple falling in and out love while musically goofing on Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock” and name-checking a few hair metal bands. “Ricky Bobby” is borderline thrash with shouted vocals and a harmony guitar solo, and somehow meshes in a sing-along chorus. The energetic title track has tons of guitar and an “oh-oh oh-oh-oh-oh” part that recalls Toby Rand’s long-lost “Throw It Away” from “Rock Star: Supernova” (remember that?!), and “The Joke’s On You” keeps the up-tempo rocker parade going with cool riffs and varied vocal styles. “Nudist Priest” expertly mixes the band’s signature pop/punk with a little bit o’ ska, and features yet another instantly-memorable chorus (too bad the F-bombs will keep this off the radio!) and more “whoa-oh” Toby Rand-isms. (Yes, it’s silly but that stuff rules!) “Galileo Was Wrong” pounds away, lyrically dressing down someone’s raging ego and — do you sense a pattern here? — sporting a great chorus. “Truck Stops And Tail Lights” has kind of a pop/punk or surf version of a Running Wild riff (seriously) and more Rand-isms. (I should probably now call these vocal parts zebrahead-isms.) “I’m Definitely Not Gonna Miss You” is THE uber-catchiest, bounciest, happy-go-luckiest breakup song ever, and “Too Bored To Bleed” is a fairly straight-up rocker with a primo performance by the rhythm section of Osmundson and drummer Ed Udhus. “Kiss Your Ass Goodbye” is another good breakup song that’s a bit more laidback, and “This Is Gonna Hurt You Way More Than It’s Gonna Hurt Me” completes the late-album trifecta of awesome breakup songs — where were these guys when I was having girl trouble in college? — with Beach Boys vocal melodies (no joke) and crazy-fast guitar. Finally, closer “Demon Days” winds things up with yet another up-tempo, riveting melody-fest. I’d love to see how these guys keep the energy up during a live show… I’m kind of wondering how zebrahead got signed to Dio’s label Niji Entertainment Group, but whatever the circumstances were, GREAT!!! Dig it — this is some clever, fun, rockin’ stuff.
