-HolyHell Announce John Macaluso As Their New Drummer With A Free Song Download For Their Fans!

[Note: This combines content from two different press releases. – Tim]

New York based Rock/Metal/Gothic band HolyHell have announced veteran John Macaluso as their new drummer and celebrate their new arrival with a free download of one of their first live appearances together.

HolyHell and Macaluso first played together in March 2011 with performances in sold-out shows in Worcester, MA and Cleveland, OH.

“The energy was so amazing, you can hear it effortlessly in the performances,” said HolyHell front woman and songwriter Maria Breon. “We want to share this experience with our fans! Join us on Facebook — and on the road!”

Macaluso has been the recording and touring drummer for world-renowned acts, such as Yngwie Malmsteen, ARK, James LaBrie (Dream Theater), TNT, Riot, Powermad, Starbreaker, Chris Caffery and KRS-One. Also known as “Johnny Mac” he is endorsed by Paiste Cymbals, Evans DrumHeads, Vic Firth Drum Sticks and GMS Drums. Learn more about John Macaluso at http://johnmacaluso.com/bio.shtml .

“Playing with ‘Mac’ has been a revelation and a pleasure for the whole band. He’s a monster drummer with impeccable timing and a strong sense for the music,” said musical director Francisco Palomo.

“‘Johnny Mac’ is a perfect fit for HolyHell. The band sounds killer!” adds Joe Stump.

HolyHell have earned high praise for their debut album HOLYHELL. The 13-song concept album taps into the dichotomy of its namesake, as HolyHell explore, lyrically and musically, the eternal struggle between darkness and light, life and death, evil and divine. HolyHell have gathered a growing following with their live performances in Europe and the US over the last couple of years.

The band is working on their new album, set for release in 2012.

The next opportunity to witness the infernal energy of HolyHell & Macaluso are two upcoming shows in November: Nov. 18, at the Dublin Pub in New Hyde Park, Long Island, NY and Nov. 19, at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ.

Go to http://www.facebook.com/holyhell and get your FREE live version of “Revelations” from our album HOLYHELL now.

Go to the tab “HOLYHELL” on the left side of the screen and download the song that was recorded live at the Agora, Cleveland on March 12, 2011.

-Illdisposed, StormWarrior, Supreme Pain, Wizard: Massacre Records Announce Four October Releases Via New North American Distribution

German metal label Massacre Records has secured new North American distribution through AFM Records’ deal with E1 Entertainment, and are preparing to bring four of their strongest 2001 releases stateside on the 25th of October, 2011, including the latest albums from Illdisposed, StormWarrior, Supreme Pain, and Wizard.

Among the oldest of Denmark’s metal bands, longstanding extreme metal act Illdisposed are preparing to set loose their colossal eleventh full-length album THERE IS LIGHT (BUT IT’S NOT FOR ME) on North American soil, also marking the band’s 20th anniversary together!

Surging with over 40 minutes of groove-laden thunder that elevates Illdisposed’s style, transcending from their old-school death roots up through their contemporary sound, everything is bigger, louder and stronger on THERE IS LIGHT (BUT IT’S NOT FOR ME), showing that the past two decades together definitely haven’t been a waste of time. Produced and mixed by one of Denmark’s most experienced sound engineers Tue Madsen (Suicide Silence, Heaven Shall Burn, Sick Of It All), this is the band’s most thoroughly prepared album since their 2004-released 1-800 VINDICATION.

1. Your Own Best Companion
2. Heaven Forbid
3. Our Words Betrayed
4. The Taste Of You
5. As The Day Rottens

7. Step Onto My Winter
8. Rape
9. Sunday Black
10. We

Since catching the attention of Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray/ex-Helloween) for the recording of their 2002 debut full-length, Northern Germany’s StormWarrior have become well known for their ’80s metal influences based on tales of Nordic mythology. They’ve toured their way across Europe countless times and have shared the stage with metal’s biggest names at prestigious festivals, and cranking out multiple full-length albums amidst a live record and an array of EPs and smaller releases over the past decade.

Now, with their fourth full-length album HEATHEN WARRIOR, StormWarrior are raising the bar once more. Not only staying true to their roots, they managed to evolve their already unequaled musical prowess with the most catchy yet intricate guitar work, earwig-melodies and pushing drum and bass attacks. The band once again worked with their trusted companion Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Rage, Wuthering Heights, etc.) once again, who mixed the album at Jailhouse Studios.

1. …Og Hammeren Hæves Til Slag…
2. Heathen Warrior
3. The Ride Of Asgård

11. And Northern Steele Remaineth

Dutch death metal maniacs Supreme Pain are prepared to drop DIVINE INCARNATION on North American audiences, their third and strongest album to date, and the band’s debut for Massacre Records.

The brutalizing quintet features a cast of death metal militia including vocalist Adrie Kloosterwaard (Sinister, Infinited Hate, ex-Houwitzer), drummer Paul Beltman (ex-Sinister, ex-Judgment Day, ex-Infinited Hate, ex-Fondlecorpse), bassist Alesa Sare (ex-Sarcasm, Root ‘A Balluta) and guitarist Bas Brussaard (Fondlecorpse, ex-Infinited Hate). This lineup culminates massive talent with the ranks of Supreme Pain, who break out their heaviest weaponry to date on their third full-length DIVINE INCARNATION. Produced at Soundlodge Studio by Jörg Uken (God Dethroned, Dew-Scented, Defloration), DIVINE INCARNATION is the band’s most epic and evil atmospheric album to date, but not by weakening their groove-laden, aggressive death metal.

4. Treasonous Disease
5. Trapped In Heresy

Celebrating their 23rd year together as a band, and over these years having become one of Germany’s leading traditional/speed metal exports, Wizard will release their ninth full-length, …OF WARIWULFS AND BLUOTVARWES, on North American soil this October.

A concept album based on a trilogy of fantasy novels by German writer Andre Wiesler, …OF WARIWULFS AND BLUOTVARWES boasts nearly 50 minutes of the band’s trademark true, epic heavy metal, recorded at Magic Hall Studio by the band’s bassist Volker Leson and produced by Wizard, before being mastered by Achim Köhler (Primal Fear, Sinner, etc.). Wholly infusing influences from a wider range of metal’s subgenres than ever before, this album is the most well-executed and professionally recorded release in the band’s catalog.

Hostile, formed in 2006 by A.J. who was brought up in a graveyard house in the heart of the Black Country (the birthplace of heavy metal).

The lineup consists of vocalist Jay, the guitar duet of A.J. and Matt, Alex Hill (son of Ian Hill, Judas Priest) on bass duties and Gunga on the drums.

Having become regulars on the UK live circuit, playing renown venues such as The Wolverhampton Civic and gaining support to big acts such as Soulfly and Morbid Angel, Hostile managed to gain the attention of metal God and founding member of the mighty Judas Priest, K.K. Downing, who caught the band live at his local venue. Impressed by the potential of the band, K.K. not only agreed to produce the band’s debut album but to also write a song for the band titled “Addiction” which is very unique as this is the first time K.K. has written a song outside Judas Priest.

As a taste of things to come, Hostile then hooked up with top London booking agent Rod Macsween of I.T.B. who went on to book the band for the Download Festival at the historical Donington Park venue, gaining excellent reviews such as KERRANG! ‘kkkk’ review and also packing out the Gibson stage tent to which they went down a storm. The band then went on to support the newly reunited brothers Max and Igor Cavalera in their new band Cavalera Conspiracy at the sold-out London Astoria gaining stunning reviews and again going down a storm with the London crowd.

Hostile then re-grouped with K.K. Downing and headed down to The Old Smithy studios where Judas Priest recorded ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION (2003) and their latest masterpiece NOSTRADAMUS (2008) to start work on Hostile’s debut album which was also to be engineered by Richard Wood who had worked with Judas Priest on their latest work NOSTRADAMUS.

Writing the album and working with K.K. has been an invaluable experience for Hostile and they certainly can now understand why K.K. says metal is in his veins, Hostile are also proud to say that they too hail from the cherished birthplace of heavy metal. “We live and breathe Heavy Metal!” says A.J.

Now with their debut album EVE OF DESTRUCTION complete, Hostile hope to aspire to be the most important band from Birmingham/Black Country since their mighty predecessors Judas Priest and Black Sabbath themselves.

The album features 10 tracks that are linked together with cinematic sound effects and lush narration showcasing a range of different styles at play from medieval folk to ’70s rock and all the way to full-blown power metal,” commented vocalist/ guitarist Dave Khan.

Scythia is also offering two free downloads “For The King” and “Voice Of The Sword” at the following links.

“For The King”

“Voice Of The Sword”

…OF EXILE Teaser Video:

Track Listing:

1. Prelude
2. Spirit Of The Quest
3. Sleeping Village
4. Forgotten Forest
5. Fallen King
6. Voice Of The Sword
7. For The King
8. Fortress
9. Dies Irae II
10. Hobarth’s Inn

About the album: …OF EXILE is a story album that that tells the tale of a Scythian king deceived by those closest to him and his journey to reclaim his throne with his possessed sword and remaining loyal knights. Forging musical influences from folk and prog metal along with classical complements from instruments such as the Oboe of Death, cello and trumpet, …OF EXILE takes the listener on a musical adventure to the land of Scythia. The record was produced and mixed by Shaun Thingvold who has engineered on albums with (Strapping Young Lad, Zimmer’s Hole, Lamb Of God, Fear Factory).

About the band:

Formed in the latter half of 2008, Scythia is a five piece band that combines haunting folk melodies (emphasized by keyboards and oboe) with the driving force of modern progressive metal to form a raw and powerful sound that is their own. Scythia is not your older brother’s metal band. Unless that band had an oboe of death, echoes of thunder, and a knack for writing folk metal tunes.

So what is Scythia?

Taking its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with a painting of Nordic/Russian warriors riding bears while brandishing swords, Scythia not only “gives the painting musical significance,” but it is also “the name of an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia. The melodies used in our music have a very ancient, sometimes medieval sound, so I wanted to attribute them to an ancient civilization,” says Khan.

In 2010, Scythia released its debut, …OF WAR (originally with violin) which was produced by Shaun Thingvold who has engineered on projects with SYL, Fear Factory, Darkest Hour and many more. Now, following some lineup changes, Scythia has released its second album …OF EXILE, again produced by Shaun Thingvold, on September 23, 2011.

Upcoming Show Dates:

November 19, 2011 – Vancouver, BC – Rickshaw Theatre (Nerdfest)

-Atlantean Kodex: New Album From Epic German Metal Outfit Underway

Germany’s Atlantean Kodex have been hard at work over recent months, writing their sophomore full-length album, which at press time remains untitled. The follow-up to their heralded debut album, THE GOLDEN BOUGH, is surely one of the most anticipated albums for fans of grand, epic and pure heavy metal.

Stated guitarist Manuel Trummer this week on the progress of the writing process: “The new album is slowly starting to take shape. So far we have around 30 minutes of all new, unreleased material. There won’t be any demo songs or older songs from previous releases on the album. Regarding the general direction, you can expect the same sound and atmosphere as on THE GOLDEN BOUGH. There won’t be any change in style whatsoever. The stuff we have written so far ranges from nice headbanging up-tempo anthems to some of the slowest and most epic stuff we have done… it’s safe to say that our key coordinates still are INTO GLORY RIDE-era Manowar, VIKING-era Bathory, arcane ’80s US Metal served with a healthy dose of NWOBHM, folk and ’70s vibes. All regressive, all Atlantean Kodex.”

Atlantean Kodex will be focusing on the writing of this opus year until they are 100% sure the album is a worthy successor to THE GOLDEN BOUGH, being planned for release sometime in late 2012 or early 2013.

THE GOLDEN BOUGH, released by Italy’s Cruz Del Sur Music in 2010, took fans of the most epic classic, power and doom metal by surprise, reaping incredible acclaim from critics and publications of all caliber and from diehard fans of pure heavy metal worldwide, and closing out the year on countless year-end lists.

Read Trummer’s full statement with much more detail on the album’s progress at Cruz Del Sur Music’s website here, and stay tuned for more details on the album to emerge through the coming year.

-Byron Nemeth To Pay Tribute To Jimi Hendrix During L.A. Amp Show

LOS ANGELES, CA — Scottsdale, AZ-based guitar hero Byron Nemeth plans to commemorate Jimi Hendrix’s burial date of Oct. 1 1970 during his appearance at L.A. Amp Show Oct. 1 and 2.

Nemeth will be heading to the roof of the Airtel Plaza Hotel at approximately 4:20 p.m. to play “The Star-Spangled Banner” as performed by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and to light a guitar on fire in Hendrix’s memory. “Honoring Hendrix by replicating his very controversial rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ on electric guitar is the most important political rock statement that needs to be done today to wake people up to new music,” says Nemeth. “This delivery of screaming guitar and ballistic feedback will shock and inspire listeners to a new vision of what modern rock should be instead of the watered down corporate drivel we have been force-fed in recent years.”

Byron will be representing Moore Amps and the company’s new model Mooresound 1013 Amp Class A 20 Watt Single Channel All Tube Amplifier throughout the weekend.

-Jägermeister Presents Tour With Co-Headliners Unearth & Chimaira

[Note: This combines two updates. – Tim]

Since the band’s genre defining release THE ONCOMING STORM, Unearth has continuously crisscrossed the globe, becoming one of the hardest — and most consistent — touring bands in all of hard rock. With DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT, their fifth full-length, the quintet have delivered their most honest, powerful, and compelling statement to date, driving a fist into the collective gut of every image-obsessed metal band currently cluttering up the landscape, and setting a new standard when it comes to marrying precision brute force and exhilarating melody.

Earning themselves Top 200 Billboard Chart entries for all four of the band’s Metal Blade releases (THE ONCOMING STORM, III: IN THE EYES OF FIRE, THE MARCH, and DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT), Unearth is once again prepared to take the world by storm when they hit the road this fall with Cleveland, Ohio’s Chimaira. The tour will be joined by Athens, Ohio’s Skeletonwitch and Las Vegas, Nevada’s Molotov Solution.

Jägermeister, the brand that’s synonymous with music, has a long history of supporting bands, both from a local and basement level to national amphitheater acts. The brand has spent almost two decades developing artists and has seen many go from obscurity to the top of their fields. “Both bands symbolize the attitude that Jägermeister shares with hard rock and metal music,” says Bill Henderson, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising at Sidney Frank Importing Company, Inc. “Chimaira and Unearth have both worked with our brand for several years and it’s great that we can continue the relationship with this tour.”

“We are incredibly pleased to announce this fall’s Jägermeister tour in North America,” says Trevor Phipps of Unearth. “We will be supporting our new album DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT and are anxious to play more tracks from that album. Hitting the road with us will be our old friends in Chimaira, Skeletonwitch and soon to be new friends in Molotov Solution. We would like to thank Jägermeister for supporting this tour and we look forward to seeing you all on the road! Let’s make this a fall tour to remember!!! Cheers!!!”

Tickets are on sale to the general public through each venue’s ticketing outlet. Please check local listings or Unearth’s website ( http://unearth.tv/tour-dates/ ) for more details.

“DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT is a maelstrom of melodic riffs, screamy shouts and enough noodling to keep ‘Guitar Hero’ nerds happy. But it’s not chasing maidens and slaying dragons; Unearth have enough of the ’90s straight-edge hardcore scene still left in their blood to give the lyrics an impassioned warrior cry against corrupt politics and wavering faith. 4/5” — Alternative Press Magazine

*** PRESS RELEASE #15 ***
-Ecliptyka Signs To Rage On Stage Management

Collectively, Ecliptyka was fused in 1998, by members Helena Martins (main vocals), Hélio Valisc (guitars and backing vocals), Guilherme Bollini (guitars and scream vocals), Eric Zambonini (bass) and Tiago Catalá (drums).

Ecliptyka has a unique sound with straightforward, no-nonsense vocals by Helena Martins with occasional blending by Hélio Valisc … finishing along aggressively are the vocals of Guilherme Bollini. Symbolic barreled guitar riffs spun by driving drums and quick snappy-back bass lines bring the foundation from the floor to the stage, clearly elevating their musicianship to a level not seen or heard before.

The band is influenced by many styles from Metal, Heavy Metal to Death Metal and Metalcore, however to try and fit them in any specific genre would be insane because you can still even find a progressive influence as demonstrated on WE ARE THE SAME and its obvious the lyrics, as well as the band directs expressed feelings and ideas, altogether trying to convey awareness about current world issues.

The band Ecliptyka has shared the stage with important heavy metal greats, such as Dr. Sin, Tuatha De Danann, Mindflow and others, and took to the stage in shows throughout São Paulo state. At the end of year 2007, the band released its first independent CD called THE FIRST PETAL FALLS and in July 2008, the band went on a tour throughout Europe, where they took part in major festivals with noted European greats. Ecliptyka then gained attention from the international media and carried on to give interviews to Brazilian TV, radio shows and was considered one of the best national bands of 2008 by the columnist Costábile Salzano Jr from TV Tribuna and was asked to perform at top Brazilian festivals and recently was a supporting act band for the touring Dutch band Delain, Tarja Turunen (ex-Nightwish), The Agonist and Revamp in São Paulo.

Currently, Ecliptyka constantly tours throughout Brazil to promote their new album called A TALE OF DECADENCE, released in Brazil on March 2011 via Die Hard Records and in Japan on Radtone Music in September of 2011. This album has a much updated concept, with lyrics about destruction of the Planet by humans, cruelty against animals, politics and war …

In August 2011, Ecliptyka signs with Rage On Stage Management from the USA, which is now responsible for all their business relations worldwide. Helena says, “We couldn’t be happier with the signing to Rage On Stage Management. It’s an amazing opportunity for us to collaborate with Frank James and spread our music throughout the world. We are very excited and look forward to working together with the ROSM family and making all our efforts worth it!” Frank from ROSM quotes, “We anticipate the arrival of Ecliptyka for a US tour in July of 2012” as well as the release to a new video in September this year!

*** PRESS RELEASE #16 ***
-Rumpelstiltskin Grinder Signs To Candlelight Records

Candlelight Records today confirms the worldwide signing of thrashers Rumpelstiltskin Grinder. The Philadelphia-based band is already working on their new album, titled GHOSTMAKER, expected for release early spring 2012. The four-piece tested some of their new material via a string of regional shows this past weekend and expect to tour in support of the album once released.

Guitarist Ryan Moll comments, “we are psyched to be on Candlelight.” Sharing details about the ongoing recording he notes, “Right now we are in the studio working on our third and most intense release to date. This album promises to be the fastest, darkest, most relentless and insane album yet. It will contain some of the most bone-crushing, graveyard stomping, Frankenstein/Dracula/Wolfman hate-f*ck riffage written thus far.”

Guitarist Matt Moore adds, “Our wretched new masterpiece will be finished soon enough. Each song has its own distinct and strange aura of speed, darkness, brute strength, violence, cunning, and power. Like any respectable band, we have raised the bar and taken on musical and lyrical concepts that would drive commoners insane. Faster. Louder. Darker. Crazier.”

Formed in 2002, Rumpelstiltskin Grinder dropped several underground releases, including a split 7″ inch and a live album, before signing with Relapse for their studio debut, BURIED IN THE FRONT YARD, released October 2005. Blabbermouth called the record “a dynamic thrash album with roots in crossover, a musically talented cast, and loads of tongue-in-cheek cleverness.” The band would keep busy with additional split recordings, SPEED N SPIKES VOL. II (2008) and URINE TROUBLE / NOTHING DEFEATS THE SKULL (2008) before getting back in to the studio for their second full-length, LIVING FOR DEATH; DESTROYING THE REST also released by Relapse January 2009. The band supported Absu for a 22-date US/Canadian tour in April 2009, a tour with Deceased in 2010, and have been performing regionally since.

Rumpelstiltskin Grinder currently features guitarist/vocalist Matt Moore, bassist/vocalist Shawn Riley, drummer Pat Battaglia, and guitarist Ryan Moll.

The album also landed at #27 in Germany, #67 in Austria, and #78 in Switzerland. We received word today that SYMPATHETIC RESONANCE entered the German charts at #27, our highest debut ever! A lot of time and effort went into the making of this record and we had no idea how it would be received, particularly after having been away so long. -Armored Saint has three shows scheduled on the East Coast for the first time in 20 years, with Seven Witches:

Bassist Joey Vera said this in a press release: “In July, we held a poll asking fans to choose their favorite Saint songs and we compiled a list of the top 10. At recent gigs in Los Angeles and in Germany, we would allow fans to come up and choose one of the top 10 songs for us to play, right there on the spot. We did this three times during our set. It was such a good time that we’re going to do this again for our tri-state shows. -Riverdogs’ WORLD GONE MAD is out now through Melodic Rock Records. Track list: “World Gone Mad,” “Big Steel Town,” “Best Day Of My Life,” “Just A Little Higher,” “For You,” “This Empty Room,” “Glitter Town,” “No Matter What” (live). Hype: “Riverdogs! What a great band — Rob Lamothe, Vivian Campbell, Nick Brophy and Marc Denzeisen reunited in 2003 to record a new album that never was completed and for a few shows. However, thanks to Andrew McNeice, the band finished the songs and recorded two new songs for a release in 2011. The album also includes a cover of Badfinger’s ‘No Matter What,’ still we only get seven new Riverdogs tracks which is better than nothing. The new songs are great, this is what classic rock is all about — a little bluesy, riffy, rootsy and very melodic with Lamothe’s splendid voice over it. The title track ‘World Gone Mad’ belongs on a Best Of collection no doubt, just as much as the amazing ‘Best Day Of My Life.'” See http://www.melodicrockrecords.com/ for more.

-Lots of new stuff these last few weeks, with recent releases from Anthrax, Alice Cooper, and Dream Theater all coming out on the same day, and now the new Sebastian Bach and Chickenfoot are out this week. The new Anthrax threw me with its goofy track list. I bought it, tore it open, and dialed up track #8 — “Judas Priest.” I figured it was “an homage” to the mighty Priest Beast and I *had* to hear it. Well, it didn’t sound anything like or related to Judas Priest… Turns out the back of the CD shows tracks 1-11 but there really are 13, two of which are short “hymn” instrumentals that threw me off. Here’s the correct track list, if you care: “Worship,” “Earth On Hell,” “The Devil You Know,” “Fight’em ‘Til You Can’t,” “I’m Alive,” “Hymn 1,” “In The End,” “The Giant,” “Hymn 2,” “Judas Priest,” “Crawl,” “The Constant,” “Revolution Screams.” What’s more, the final track includes a ghost track that kicks off at the 11:08 mark — a cover of Refused’s “New Noise.” Oh, and yes, “Judas Priest” is what I thought it was. 🙂

-Do yourself a favor and download that Tribunal Records compilation mentioned above. There’s some death-y / core-y stuff you may wish to skip, but I’d heartily recommend Colossus’ “The Mountain That Rides,” Line Of Fire’s “Obsession,” Vanisher’s “Reaction (Joey Sturgis Mix),” The Feds’ “Welcome To America,” Forte’s “This Unholy War,” Blatant Disarray’s “Down & Out,” and Canvas Solaris’ “When Solar Winds Collide.” Not bad at all. For free.

-I didn’t have a column last week so I’ll say this now… Here’s the description of Ronny Munroe’s (Metal Church) new album LORDS OF THE EDGE: “[It] sounds a little bit like what would happen if you put Metal Church’s LIGHT IN THE DARK CD into a blender with Queensryche’s first EP and Judas Priest’s PAINKILLER, then mixed it with some present day themes and a shot of pure adrenaline.” Intriguing, no?

-Don’t forget, Chicago-area metalheads — the Ragnarokkr Metal Apocalypse festival is this weekend at Bada Brew in Crest Hill, IL. I can’t make it and it’s killing me… I’d love to see Obsession, Sacred Oath, Helstar, Cage, and the others. Check out the details at http://www.ragnarokkrmetal.com/ and http://www.facebook.com/RagnarokkrMetal .

-The name “Rumpelstiltskin Grinder” cracks me up… I had a buddy in junior high who had trouble pronouncing my last name and would call me Rumpelstiltskin instead. 🙂

-Grab those free Arrayan Path and Scythia downloads, too — killer stuff.

-In my current playlist: Alice Cooper – WELCOME 2 MY NIGHTMARE (UMe), Wolfpakk – s/t (AFM Records), Michael Monroe – SENSORY OVERDRIVE (Spinefarm/Universal), Stala & So. – IT IS SO. (So Music Finland), Lionville – s/t (Avenue Of Allies), Crash Street Kids – SWEET CREATURES (Vanity Music Group/Hot City Recording Company).

Here’s an interesting instrumental for you — originally released on Pacifica Records in 2007, Byron Nemeth’s THE FORCE WITHIN now gets a well deserved 2011 re-launch. Normally this type of album would fall under the “shred” umbrella — and with things starting off with a homage to Joe Satriani called “Satrianimal” you could be forgiven for assuming that’s what you’re in store for — but shred is simply not an accurate term for what THE FORCE WITHIN offers. Byron clearly has a variety of influences including rock, metal, progressive and fusion, and he blends them in creative ways to construct cool entities such as “Chocolate Factory,” “Snake Charmer,” “Be” and the title track. Indeed, many of the passages sound like the missing link between instrumental Rush and Gamalon, with great use of tricky drumming, atmospheric keyboards and agile bass work. What’s nice about THE FORCE WITHIN is the almost complete avoidance of shred cliches, Byron opting for effectively spacey themes and dynamics instead of “watch what I can do” theatrics. The only real drawback is the production, which often buries the rhythm guitars. Check this out, if you enjoy instrumental excursions but have grown weary of guitar acrobatics you might find THE FORCE WITHIN takes you off the beaten path, in a good way!
