-Thin Lizzy Set To Rock North America This Fall Opening For Judas Priest

It’s almost impossible to find a modern day hard rock/heavy metal band that doesn’t list Thin Lizzy as an influence. So the band couldn’t have picked a better time to launch an arena tour, opening for Judas Priest on their farewell “Epitaph Tour.”

Comprised of a kick ass lineup featuring such Phil Lynott-era Lizzies as guitarist Scott Gorham, drummer Brian Downey, and keyboardist Darren Wharton, as well as Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus, former Almighty singer/guitarist Ricky Warwick, and bassist Marco Mendoza, Lizzy is aiming to bring the house down each night.

Understandably Lizzy is looking forward to teaming up with metal legends Priest and Black Label Society this fall. “One of the big perks of being a member of Thin Lizzy is that sometimes we get to share the stage with other bands that have helped to shape the music we hear today,” explains Warwick. “Judas Priest helped define a genre and I am really looking forward to seeing them on tour.”

Thin Lizzy became one of rock’s top bands during the 1970’s, on the strength of the hits “Jailbreak,” “The Boys Are Back In Town,” “Dancing In The Moonlight,” and “Waiting For An Alibi,” Lynott’s poetic-yet-tough lyrics, and the highly influential dual guitar attack of Gorham and which ever second guitarist he was paired up with at the time (Brian Robertson, the late Gary Moore, Snowy White, or John Sykes). Lizzy split up in 1983, before Lynott passed away in 1986.

However, Lizzy’s stature has continued to grow over the years, as their songs have been covered by a wide variety of artists, including Metallica (“Whiskey In The Jar”), Smashing Pumpkins (“Dancing In The Moonlight”), Bon Jovi (“The Boys Are Back In Town”), Sade (“Still In Love with You”), the Foo Fighters (“Bad Reputation”), and Mastodon (“Emerald”), among other rock bands.

Gorham especially is looking forward to Lizzy’s triumphant return to the States. “We love playing in the USA and it will be great to show the rest of the States what we are made of. We are all fired and ready to kick some ass!”

Piece Of Y&T History

Last year, Y&T retired the faithful old backdrop that has graced their stages since the ’80s, and debuted the new backdrop. Dave has decided to auction off the old relic, so now you can have a piece of classic Y&T history.

Made of heavy-duty fabric, this well-used backdrop is now probably 30% gaff tape from all the decades of wear and tear. It was originally 15′ wide by 18′ high, but as the various Y&T crew through the years made continual attempts to repair it and keep it alive, somewhere in Europe 2009 the final rip resulted in a shortening of the length to 11′. The classic Y&T logo is massive at 13′ wide, and starts 44″ from the top.

This piece of Y&T history was in use until the new backdrop made its debut at Y&T’s May 22, 2010 sold out show at the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Dave has also placed on auction two of his Y&T road cases, one of them from the ’80s, complete with stickers, warts and all.

Check out the auction and place your bids. These are the real deal!

-Lion Music Label & Artist News

James Byrd’s Atlantis Rising’s BEYOND THE PILLARS Released July 15th 2011

Artist: James Byrd’s Atlantis Rising
Release Date: July 15th 2011
Format: CD / Digital Download
Catalogue: LMC304 / EAN6419922003046

Album promo page w/streaming audio:

Lion Music are proud to introduce some true musical treasure in the form of this special release from the early days of one of the world’s most accomplished guitarists, James Byrd. A name synonymous with some of the finest guitar work committed to tape, this unique release is an album any fan of the former Fifth Angel guitarist will have been longing to hear and serves as a reminder of just how good a songwriter and musician Byrd is.

Comprised of 14 never before heard performances and seven new songs, BEYOND THE PILLARS is — literally — a lost album. The material’s origins date to when James Byrd began writing and recording with vocalist Freddy Krumins within days of departing Fifth Angel in the summer of 1987, with much of the music material Byrd had originally intended for the second Fifth Angel album.

Like Deep Purple’s SMOKE ON THE WATER release, BEYOND THE PILLARS was recorded on location. Brain Storm Productions mobile captured the band’s magic at the infamous Music Bank sound stages in Seattle, Washington from the fall of 1987 through the winter of 1988. Fans of Byrd’s solo debut JAMES BYRD’S ATLANTIS RISING (Shrapnel Records) will recognize seven of the track titles on offer here. However the versions here showcase a rawer, heavier and more immediate delivery to those that were later re-recorded on the now out-of-print ATLANTIS RISING release by Shrapnel Records. Further treasures are revealed in seven never-released songs rich in diversity and depth that make this a “must own” part of any Byrd, or indeed Fifth Angel’s fans music collection.

The forgotten masters that make up BEYOND THE PILLARS were undiscovered until early 2011 when Freddy Krumins was going through a box of old tapes. Regarding the discovery of the recordings, James Byrd comments, “I was shocked to have had these masters turn up, and then to hear the quality. I had long forgotten the sessions after almost 25 years of other musical activities. Everything sounds better than I could have imagined and I think my playing was on a higher energy level than what later ended up on the J.B.A.R. debut. I knew it needed to be heard.”

On the musicians’ aim almost 25 years ago Byrd recalls, “The goal was to create a musical statement which was melodic and dynamic.” This material’s character is further shaped by a lyrical content which blends tales of lost love, with Greek mythology and fantasy all powered by the sublime vocals of Freddy Krumins, himself a student of legendary vocal tutor David Kyle (who also coached the likes of Geoff Tate/Nancy Wilson/Chris Cornell, etc).

BEYOND THE PILLARS sounds like no other album from an American group before or since. The combination of European influences by groups and musicians such as Scorpions, UFO, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Uli Jon Roth, and James Byrd’s decidedly classical influences, is such that BEYOND THE PILLARS captures the energy of a newly formed group ready to take on the world.

From hard-driving dark tracks like “Chasing The Shadows,” to power ballads like “I’ve Got To Find You,” and lush instrumentals such as “Requiem Atlantis,” this album showcases a level of maturity and sophistication seldom heard from any band, let alone a new one from America in 1987.

Track Listing:
1. Chasing The Shadows Away
2. Fallen Warrior
3. I Don’t Believe In Love (Falling In Lust)
4. Fly To The Sun
5. On My Mind
6. Waiting In The Shadows
7. Remember Love
8. Angel Of Mercy
9. After The Fire
10. Eye Of The Storm
11. Stranger In The Night
12. Let It Out
13. Gotta Find You

Early Classic From Lars Eric Mattsson Gets A 2011 Re-Mix And Re-Master For Digital Only Release

Lion Music are pleased to announce the launch of our new purely “digital” release range. With the growing popularity of legal downloads we are using this platform to offer up some out-of-print classics as well as introduce some new special releases from selected artists.

Brand New Releases

Coming Very Soon On iTunes

Virtual Mind are a progressive metal band formed by guitarist Francesco Fareri. The debut album coming out soon is a mixture of heavy metal and progressive style with actual lyrics and personal events that influenced the total songwriting. Francesco wrote all music and lyrics trying to create something new in this genre of music.

The band is composed by Francesco Fareri on 7- & 8-string guitar, renowned singer Titta Tani (ex DGM, ex Astra, Ashent, etc.), drummer Dario Ciccioni (Twinspirits, Empyrios, Empty Tremor, Khymera, etc.) and bassist Emanuele Calvelli (Noumeno).

Everything happened when Francesco left his last band and was searching for a singer with powerful and delicate colours of the voice and so he met Titta Tani. In few weeks Titta reviewed the songs and gave some good feedback so Francesco and his close friend Mauro Tonelli started to work on lyrics. Meantime Emanuele recorded all the bass tracks and Dario Ciccioni programmed drums exactly as he could play them. Over the following weeks the album was recorded, mixed and mastered and picked up by Lion Music for release on their digital album network in mid 2011.

Massimo Izzizzari – ELECTRIFYING
Coming Very Soon On iTunes

Second guitar instrumental from this fluid Italian guitarist with a style that mixes rock with some modern fusion idioms. First heard on his 2007 Lion Music release UNSTABLE BALANCE, Massimo has delivered a potent second release of nine new instrumentals all of which showcase his flawless lead technique over strong rhythmic bedrocks. Fans of the likes of Greg Howe will get a kick out of Massimo Izzizari’s work with the albums title summing up the musicianship contained within.

Out-Of-Print Re-Release

Available now on iTunes at:

1988’s original version of ETERNITY marked the recording debut of guitarist/composer Lars Eric Mattsson. What this early release for Europe and Japan lacked in production budget was more than made up for in the strength of song. The album them got a revamp in 2001 when Lars saw fit to completely re-record the album for its 2001 reissue for CD on Lion Music. Now some 10 years later having been out of print for a few years, and after numerous requests for a re-release Mattsson decided to improve the sound further for this new digital only version.

ETERNITY in 2011 has seen a re-mix from the earlier re-recorded 2001 version and has also been re-mastered to provide optimum sound for the digital age. With all guitar, bass and keyboard instrumentation coming from Lars Eric Mattsson, Bjorn Lodin (Baltimoore) provides the album’s gritty vocals whilst long-time Mattsson associate Eddie Sledgehammer performs drums.

Stylistically the album harks back to the age from when the material was penned (mid 1980s) and showcases a neo-classically accented hard rock/metal sound. Fans of Mattsson’s more progressive leanings will still find plenty to savour in the lead guitar work on offer. Whilst the dark mystical metal leanings of the song craft lend the album a quality along the lines of ’80s classic Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen and early Europe making this one re-issue not to miss.

-Eric Johnson To Launche UP CLOSE Summer Tour

Since the 1980s, Eric Johnson has been one of the most critically acclaimed rock guitarists, as evidenced by the success of such releases as AH VIA MUSICOM, VENUS ISLE, and his latest offering, UP CLOSE. And soon, Johnson will be launching his summer tour to continue support of his latest album, fresh off of appearances on the West Coast Experience Hendrix Tour, as well as teaming up with Anton Fig and Will Lee of “Late Night” fame for a rousing rare performance at New York City’s P.C. Richards and Sons Theatre.

From July 7th through August 20th, Johnson will be touring the USA from coast to coast as a headliner, as well as joining forces with fellow guitar great Steve Miller for shows at the Sleep Country Amphitheater in Clark County, Washington on July 17th and the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, on August 7th. He will also join the legendary Buddy Guy on July 21 in Omaha, Nebraska at the Red Sky Music Festival.

Also recently released was a vinyl version of UP CLOSE, issued on 180 gram vinyl, and housed in a beautiful special double LP gatefold package with printed sleeves. Additionally, UP CLOSE was re-mastered specially for this vinyl release by Jim Wilson.

A long time in the making, UP CLOSE has received rave reviews. All Music Guide pointed out that “[Johnson] continues to find interesting ways to hone his specific craft on UP CLOSE,” while Premier Guitar Magazine raved “Johnson has created another worthy addition to his already legendary catalog.” Also, it shouldn’t be overlooked that UP CLOSE features an impressive list of special guests (Sonny Landreth, Steve Miller, Jimmie Vaughan, and Jonny Lang).

Speaking to M Music Magazine, Eric had the following to say about what his goals were for UP CLOSE. “To find new ways of doing things. We’re all the sum of our history. After a while, we start to create certain patterns in what we do. I wanted to break some of that repetition. If you keep to the same format, the vibe stays the same, even though the music might change. If you want to grow, you have to break down walls and find ways to work that are different from the past.”

Additionally, Johnson graced the cover of this year’s March issue of Guitar Player Magazine, was recently named Guitar International’s “Guitarist Of The Year,” and has won an unprecedented 33 awards at the Austin Music Awards since 1982, including taking home “Best Electric Guitar,” “Best Acoustic Guitar,” and “Best Instrumental Band” awards at this year’s ceremony.

Johnson has long been considered one of rock’s most talented six-string players, as evidenced by his aforementioned platinum-certified 1990 release, AH VIA MUSICOM, its hit single “Cliffs Of Dover,” as well as a Grammy Award win for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” in 1991. The song also recently was introduced to a whole new generation of rock fans, when it was featured in the hit video game, “Guitar Hero.”

-Author Will Romano Celebrates Prog Rock’s History In Award-Nominated Book “Mountains Come Out Of The Sky”

NEW YORK — “Mountains Come Out Of The Sky,” the new book by author and music journalist Will Romano, chronicles the stories of progressive rock’s most influential and obscure artists with a passion and knowledge that comes from years of avidly following the scene.

“I grew up on Yes, ELP, Tull, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant,” Romano said. “Prog rock is part of my DNA. Arguably, I do what I do today because of progressive rock.”

Romano’s love of the genre shines through in his words and beautiful presentation of the book. Every page of the 250-page tome explodes with color and captures the escapist qualities and look of vintage album cover artwork of the 1970s.

“I hope people read and accept this book in the spirit in which it was written: as a celebration of prog rock,” said Romano.

The first two chapters of the book describe why progressive rock came to prominence and highlight some of the pivotal historical moments in time, vis a vis the British prog rock movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. The remainder of the book provides specific facts and detailed information about the artists who’ve greatly influenced the genre.

“‘Mountains Come Out Of The Sky’ generally focuses on most of the major prog bands that made an impression on the mainstream psyche,” Romano said. “Heck, even the title references the famous Yes song, ‘Roundabout.’ While there are some obscure bands featured in ‘Mountains,’ my hope was to provide a general introductory history of the genre through band biographies, as well as some light musical analysis.”

It took three painstaking years, filled with intense research, hours upon hours of tracking down, conducting and transcribing interviews, and, of course, the actual writing of the text, to complete “Mountains Come Out Of The Sky.”

“Waking up at 3 a.m. in the middle of a work week to do a phone interview with David Allen (Gong) sticks out in my mind,” Romano recalled. “He lives in Australia, so the time difference was certainly not in my favor. The interview happened prior to his tour with Gong, so I didn’t have very many options. It was either get it done now or risk not doing it all. It took some distance from this process to realize just how much my life had been turned upside because of this book. There was a time when a 3 a.m. phone interview with someone on the other side of the world just seemed normal, you know?

“Mountains Come Out Of The Sky” features a foreword by the legendary Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson, UK, Genesis). “I was thrilled when he agreed to write it,” Romano enthused. “I never thought, as a young prog fan and drummer who tried to learn his odd-time grooves, that he’d put his stamp of approval on my work. It’s a true honor.”

“Mountains Come Out Of The Sky” is published by Backbeat Books and is available at Barnes & Noble (retail stores and BN.com), Amazon.com, Borders.com, halleonardbooks.com, and Walmart.com.

The book was nominated for a 2011 ARSC Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research ( http://www.arsc-audio.org/ ) in the category of “Best Research In Recorded Rock And Pop Music.”

Romano has been in the publishing business since the 1980s and has authored two previous books, “Big Boss Man: The Life And Music Of Bluesman Jimmy Reed” and “Incurable Blues: The Troubles And Triumph Of Blues Legend Hubert Sumlin.”

About Bitch:
One of the earliest of the ’80s Heavy Metal club bands to gain national media exposure, Bitch was formed in 1981 and quickly gained a large local following. They generated notoriety (in part) as a result of their live performances which included sadomasochism and bondage themes. They were also the first artists signed to Metal Blade Records and one of the first ever heavy metal bands to have a female lead singer, Betsy “Bitch” (Weiss). No stranger to making history, Bitch was also exposed to the national media during the Parents Music Resource Center (P.M.R.C.) hearings in the US Congress. Shortly after the band was formed, they met Brian Slagel who had recently formed Metal Blade Records, and was a friend of Bitch guitarist David Carruth. The original quartet included vocalist Betsy Weiss, guitarist Carruth, Mark Anthony Webb on bass and drummer Robby Settles. They signed for the label and released a self-financed EP entitled DAMNATION ALLEY (1982). During their early days, Bitch played a lot of gigs with other metal groups such as W.A.S.P., Slayer and Armored Saint.

The following year, the group released their first full-length album, BE MY SLAVE. During the tour of the album, Bitch developed their controversial and elaborate stage shows; these included sadomasochistic elements: clothing with chains and whips, bondage acts with a “slave” on stage…

Regarding the press reaction to BACK THROUGH TIME, released in North America last week by Napalm Records, Bowes had the following to say: “Every review I’ve seen in English says we suck! But from what Google Translate tells me, the Germans seem to love it, and they know metal better than anyone else in the world. So, you should all believe them and buy the f*ck out of our album. It’s the soundtrack to every badass pirate party — you can quote me on that if you want.”

-Multinational Heavy Metallers Powerwolf Announce Details On Bonus Disc Content Off Their New Album BLOOD OF THE SAINTS! Launch New Website!

Multinational Heavy Metallers Powerwolf have announced details about the bonus content off their upcoming new album BLOOD OF THE SAINTS which will be released as a limited digi-book edition including a bonus disc. Additionally a regular jewel case CD (without bonus disc) will be available as well as a gatefold-LP!

For the bonus CD the wolves realized a special project. In cooperation with the Russian score composer Dominic G. Joutsen they elaborated a classical orchestra piece based on five Powerwolf songs, entitled “The Sacrilege Symphony (And Still The Orchestra Prays).”

“This was a very special and challenging project,” comments Matthew Greywolf. “Working with a classical composer demands a whole different approach to your own music. And the result is simply stunning.”

Attila Dorn completed the orchestra versions with a classical vocal performance. “It was a long-kept dream of mine to perform some of my favourite Powerwolf songs as classical versions and I think it offers a very sophisticated yet haunting vision of Powerwolf’s music,” reports Attila.

In other news Powerwolf have redesigned and re-launched their website. Take a look at http://www.powerwolf.net/ .

Make also sure to surf over to the landing page where you can check into several pre-order options as well as listening to the brand new song “Sanctified With Dynamite” taken off BLOOD OF THE SAINTS! Surf over to http://www.metalblade.com/powerwolf to check it out!

I think on BLOOD OF THE SAINTS we really delivered a striking balance of mighty melodic stuff and some serious wolfish metal madness, all dressed up in some highly catchy tunes. “Till It Bleeds” (Official Album Version)

Voodoo Highway is one of the most exciting bands of the Italian rock, hard rock and metal scenario. The band is considered by the most as a true revelation and by the audiences as an extremely enjoyable and stimulating experience, with their irreverent and circus like live shows and the great relationship that the band is able to establish with the fans.

Voodoo Highway started their journey in late spring 2010 and then immediately recorded their first EP THIS IS ROCK N’ ROLL, COCKS! which has sold over 1,000 copies all around Italy and attracted the attention of important names of music history such as Craig Gruber (formerly Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Gary Moore) who spoke about the band: “The new movement of Heavy Metal has arrived! This band is the next Deep Purple!”

After a year gigging the band has recorded its first LP called BROKEN UNCLE’S INN: a concentrate of the best ’70 hard rock that meets commercial and very easy listening melodies.

The first reactions from the music press and from the audience are exciting (“Voodoo Highway are the best thing to come out of Italy since Super Mario” – Classic Rock Channel) and the band is actually touring, always getting a full house at every show.

Some foreign gigs are expected for the band during Autumn 2011 in UK and Denmark. The highway of Voodoo seems to be long and filled with rock n’ roll.

-Unearth: Band Confirms Drummer For Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest And European Hell On Earth Tour

Massachusetts metal merchants Unearth today officially welcomes Killswitch Engage drummer Justin Foley to the fold for the band’s upcoming slot on this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest and their European headlining tour (dubbed the Hell On Earth Tour) to follow. Foley, who also performed on the band’s upcoming DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT full-length, takes the place of former drummer Derek Kerswill, who parted ways with the band last year due to creative differences.

Comments vocalist Trevor Phipps: “It’s great to have Justin on board for Mayhem and Hell On Earth. We really wanted to start this album cycle with Justin behind the kit since he played on and completely slayed the new album. We’ve been friends for a long time and we recorded an album together, so this just makes sense and it gives us even more to look forward to this summer.”

Adds Foley: “I’m really looking forward to playing with some old friends, and spending a summer full of beers and breakdowns!”

DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT, which national horror portal Fangoria.com already commended for its “tight riffing, varying from technical pedal-style patterns to twin-harmony Maiden/At The Gates worship, plus all the brutally chugging breakdowns,” is Unearth’s fifth full-length. Scheduled for release in North America on July 5, 2011 via Metal Blade Records, the 11-track long player was recorded at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts with producer/Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and mixed at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Trivium, et al).

DARKNESS IN THE LIGHT will be streaming in its entirety exclusively on Alternative Press Magazine’s website beginning Monday, June 20, 2011. Stay tuned for a direct link to hear the record two weeks before it hits streets! And don’t miss Unearth on tour this summer!

-Life Complexities Force One Minute Silence To Pull From Sonisphere 2011

Due unforeseen circumstances, legendary metal-crossover titans One Minute Silence have had to pull out of this year’s Sonisphere festival. This was an extremely tough decision for the band to make as they have been itching to get out and fire up the pit once again, but life complexities have simply not allowed them to ready themselves to their incredibly high standards.

Front man Yap explains:

“We have tried so hard to get OMS back in shape in time for Sonisphere — music can be a funny path — our sounds were finding ground but then the ground just seemed to crumble — we have been working so hard to make it all come together but in truth it has be a real struggle we tried so hard to be ready but the fact is that as it stands today we are not ready — we were desperately not wanting to let any OMS fans down but we sadly have to pull out of the Sonisphere gig on July 9. Huge apologies from all of us if you bought a ticket especially to see us play — life is life folks and we are genuinely sorry. We want you to know that this is also just one gig we’re cancelling — we are still focused as a band and will continue to write and rehearse new material as we have been for the past 8 months and when we feel ready we will take the stage again and see you all in the pit — peace from Yap.”

Although hugely disappointed, One Minute Silence haven’t been deterred from their plan — to write a killer new album that will be the heaviest new sound to hit in decades.

With plans still in place to release a new track this summer and tour in the autumn, it won’t be long before the world gets to hear the all new OMS, and it’ll be worth the wait.

We will also be spending roughly a week in California. I have been warned about California. Get some sleep, friends,” commented Spencer Le Von, vocalist/guitarist of Fatality.

And as for the new record, THE DWARVES ARE BORN AGAIN features all your favorite heroes from the Dwarves long and twisted saga. Blag The Ripper, HeWhoCanNotBeNamed, Rex Everything and a cast of thousands return to crush the ears of a desperate public. Teamed with Top Ten producer Eric Valentine (Slash, All American Rejects) they have created a perfect mix of hardcore punk, ear soothing pop, and everything in between. Damaged celebrity cameos mix with twisted phone messages, ear splitting noise with dance friendly grooves, all delivered with the Dwarves trademark humor and intensity.

“By tapping the primordial urge of mankind — the very source that provided the fuel for their earlier classics — the band has delivered an edgy and thought-provoking record that neither retreads their past work, nor abandons it altogether. ****”
– Punk News

“It’s the best album the band has made in years; crude yet catchy (and not above flinging yet more jokes about sluts and AIDS), BORN AGAIN may not reinvent anything — but it shows that the Dwarves still know how to sh*t out potent loads of disgusting fun.”
– The Onion AV Club
