-Grand Slam For Iron Maiden In Sweden Rock Magazine 10-Year Anniversary Poll!

Sweden Rock Magazine, the country’s biggest selling music magazine, is celebrating 10 years with an anniversary issue. The readers have voted for the 50 greatest albums released in the past 10 years. The results show that Sweden is truly Iron Maiden country. Not only was A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH voted as number one, DANCE OF DEATH is number two and last year’s THE FINAL FRONTIER number five.

“Wow, that’s amazing,” says Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris. “There have been polls before where we’ve had albums in top 20 or top 10, but never before top one and two. Three albums in the top five is outrageous.”

The June issue of Sweden Rock Magazine is on sale on June 14. In addition to an exclusive interview with Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris, former Dissection guitarist Set Teitan breaks his silence about his time in Dissection and on the band’s swan song REINKAOS, which was voted as the ninth greatest album of the past 10 years.

Top 10 albums 2001-2011 as voted by the readers of Sweden Rock Magazine.

2. Iron Maiden – DANCE OF DEATH
4. Metallica – DEATH MAGNETIC
8. Kiss – SONIC BOOM
9. Dissection – REINKAOS
10. Avantasia – THE METAL OPERA

-L.A. Hard Rockers DC4, Feat. Jeff Duncan Of Armored Saint And Former Dio Guitarist Rowan Robertson, Launch Landing Page And Release First Single Taken Off New Album ELECTRIC MINISTRY!

L.A. Hard Rockers DC4 are all pumped up for the release of their latest ass-kicking record ELECTRIC MINISTRY! ELECTRIC MINISTRY will be released on CD via Metal Blade Records in Europe on July, 29 (G/A/S), August, 1 (rest of Europe)!

In collaboration with Metal Blade Records DC4 have now launched a landing page where you can check out pre-order options and listen to “XXX,” the first single taken off the new album ELECTRIC MINISTRY! Please surf over to http://www.metalblade.com/dc4 to check it out!

“Welcome to the alter of conviction” snarls DC4 frontman and guitarist Jeff Duncan as the band launches into the title track from their fourth release, ELECTRIC MINISTRY. Tackling subjects such as being on the wrong side of Johnny Law (“25 To Life”), the ultimate male specimen (“Rock God”) and the pleasures of the flesh (“XXX”) the quartet blast through eleven tracks on the opus produced by Bill Metoyer and co-produced by Jeff Duncan.

Metoyer, who has worked with the likes of Armored Saint, Fates Warning, W.A.S.P. and Slayer amongst countless other bands, is basically a member of the DC4 family. “I first met Bill when he engineered Armored Saint’s REVELATION album,” says Jeff. “Before long he started showing up at DC4 shows, checking us out. And he kept showing up more and more, it kind of became more than just showing up to see your friend play, ya know? So, we started talking and when the opportunity came up for us to work together he just jumped on board.”

“We made a point of making ELECTRIC MINISTRY a real guitar album. Back to our roots as guitarists,” says Rowan Robertson. “I think on our last album EXPLODE we still had a bit of that ’90s feel in us so we’ve gotten rid of that now.”

“This was the first time we had any special guests appear on a DC4 album,” relates Jeff. “We had Dizzy Reed from Guns N’ Roses provide keys on the songs ‘Dirty Hands’ and ‘The Ballad Of Rock And Roll,’ Gonzo from Armored Saint played percussion on several tracks, also. Then we had our cousin, Erin Duncan, do backing vocals on ‘The Ballad Of Rock And Roll’ and Juliette Primrose (Michael Flatley’s Lord Of The Dance) played violin on ‘The Ballad Of Rock And Roll’ as well.”

1. Wrecktory
2. Electric Ministry
3. XXX
4. Rock God
5. 25 To Life
6. Broken Soul
7. People
8. The Ballad Of Rock And Roll
9. Glitter Girl
10. Sociopath
11. Dirty Hands

Forming as the 21st Century became a reality DC4 came to be when Jeff Duncan met Rowan Robertson, the band’s musical pedigree is virtually unrivaled by their peers. “Jeff and I met when a local promoter named Happenin’ Harry asked us both to be in his backing back for a few shows in the L.A. area and in Chicago,” relates Robertson. “When we got back to L.A. he just flat out asked if I wanted to join DC4 and we got along so well and played so great together that I just had to do it.”

Jeff recalls that “I wasn’t into the whole idea of auditioning guitarists, We would know the right one when he came long and that’s exactly what happened. He was looking for the sort of situation we had to offer and as it turned out, we were looking for him!”

Having spent time in such bands as the legendary Dio, metal heroes Armored Saint, the short lived Violet’s Demise and Odin, a band who had reached cult status by the end of the 1980s without ever leaving Hollywood, DC4 is much more than just your average hard rock act.

DC4 is:
Jeff Duncan – Lead vocals, guitars
Rowan Robertson – Guitars
Matt Duncan – Bass
Shawn Duncan – Drums, percussion

DC4 will release their third long-player ELECTRIC MINISTRY via Metal Blade Records on July, 29 (G/A/S), August, 1 (rest of Europe)!

-Jane’s Addiction Partner With ArtistDirect To Debut Music Video For “End To The Lies”

Jane’s Addiction have partnered with ArtistDirect to debut the music video for their track “End To The Lies,” which comes from the band’s upcoming album THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST. To direct the video, the band enlisted the help of ShadowMachine Films (Adult Swim’s “Robot Chicken”) to create a visually stunning piece of art. The video can be viewed here:

“I’m really happy to work on this video for ‘End To The Lies’ with Alex. He clearly gets what Jane’s Addiction is about and the roots of where we came from. We came up in a very artistic community,” said guitarist Dave Navarro. “This video encompasses that through merging L.A. streets and street artists with sexuality and the beauty of music. There is no better way to define what this band has always been about.”

Jane’s Addiction will release their new album THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST in August through Capitol Records.

-Napalm Records: New Releases

Prepare for doom, darkness, and majesty! Two new Napalm releases slated for July 5th will bring you all that, and more: Draconian’s highly anticipated A ROSE FOR THE APOCALYPSE and Stream Of Passion’s DARKER DAYS!

With the summer release of Draconian’s fourth album, A ROSE FOR THE APOCALYPSE, the agonizing wait comes to an end. The formation revolving around top-notch vocalists Anders Jacobsson and Lisa Johansson once again delivers first-class songs that continue to prove the band’s supremacy within the darkly genre. The album opener is more than enough to forget the holdup, as it combines the band’s strengths better than ever before. Massive guitars, heavy drums, melancholic melodies, deep growls, and enchanting female vocals are all part of this obscure symbiosis uniting gothic metal and doom. The lyrics also march to the somber tune. Titles such as “The Last Hour Of Ancient Sunlight” and “Dead World Assembly” provide a very direct insight into the inner workings of the tracks’ protagonists. A ROSE FOR THE APOCALYPSE was recorded at the renowned Fascination Street Studios (Katatonia, Opeth, Paradise Lost) under the guidance of Jens Bogren, whose expertise allows each track to achieve its ultimate sound potential. Draconian delivers a hypnotic soundtrack of apocalyptic proportions. Never before has the End of Days sounded off with such magnificence!

Stream Of Passion – DARKER DAYS

The Dutch formation’s fourth release, DARKER DAYS, catapults Stream Of Passion from insider tip to undisputed trailblazer of the gothic metal genre. The band revolving around Marcela Bovio exudes a self-assurance and maturity that spills over into the new tracks. The songs are majestic musical gems that as a whole, deliver an unbelievably complex and sensuous end result. Metal guitars, beautiful melodies and symphonic arrangements build the foundation for Marcela’s soulful vocals. This sweeping blend makes songs like “Lost,” “Collide,” and “This Moment” passionate statements of romantic intensity. The crystal-clear and impressive production adds the finishing touch to this well-rounded masterpiece. DARKER DAYS is a gothic metal album that will appeal to all the senses.

-Hell Have Entered The German Album Top 50 With Debut HUMAN REMAINS

Nearly 30 years after originally forming in 1982 UK’s Heavy Metal legends Hell have entered the German album charts with their debut album HUMAN REMAINS at #46!

Hell were founded in 1982 out of the remains of two classic NWoBHM bands, Race Against Time and Paralex. They signed with Mausoleum in 1985 but split in ’86 after the label went bankrupt. After the suicide of original singer Dave Halliday in 1987 the remaining members gave up any hope of reforming.

More than two centuries later the band is back with huge success. Producer/guitarist Andy Sneap (Accept a.o.), being a close friend of the band, brought the remaining band members back together again three years ago to resurrect the old material and bring Hell back to life. The result was HUMAN REMAINS, ten old Hell classics re-recorded. Released last week to unanimous appraisal across Europe, US and Japan, HUMAN REMAINS entered the German trend charts at #12 with the final weeks national chart position being #46.

Hell is now coming to Europe.

-GI Jams® Honored By Mayor Goodman And The City Of Las Vegas Celebrates “GI Jams Day” ON ABC 13’s “The Morning Blend” And “American Perspective Radio”

GI Jams, a multi-media project and social music network community that spotlights and promotes original songs and performances of US servicemen and woman of all Military branches, ranks and rates, was honored by The City of Las Vegas and Mayor Goodman proclaiming May 20 officially as “GI Jams Day.”

To celebrate “GI Jams Day,” Co-Founders of http://www.GIJams.com/ and hit songwriters, producers and artists Denny Randell and Biddy Schippers made a TV appearance on Las Vegas’ ABC 13’s “The Morning Blend,” speaking with “Morning Blend’s” talk hosts Dao Vu and Shawn Tempesta about the honor and concept behind GI Jams. The show played a moving music video clip of GI Jams artist Adrian Manuel singing his song “Freedom” while flying in his Blackhawk in Iraq, plus a special live performance by GI Jams Wyoming country duo Joe Speed Band. The band, consisting of Jeremiah Eaton and Nathan Harvey, performed their song “Big And Rich,” one of the tracks featured on GI Jams’ first compilation CD album GI JAMS: VOL. 1 THE ORIGINAL MUSIC OF OUR U.S. MILITARY ARTISTS (GI Jams Records™). The album features eight of GI Jams’ popular artists, with all record sale proceeds going directly to those GI Jams artists.

Also on “GI Jams Day” Denny and Biddy gave an inspiring interview with host Judyth Piazza on SOP’s “American Perspective Radio,” talking about the powerful concept of creating music and supporting and giving military musicians a platform on GIJams.com to showcase their talent. Piazza also asked about the tribute to GI Jams from Mayor Goodman’s office proclaiming “GI Jams Day,” which later turned into talking about moving stories of how certain active duty soldiers while deployed in Iraq became a part of the GI Jams community.

“It’s amazing that many of these songs were written in tents and barracks after difficult missions and many of these artists have told us that GI Jams has been an irreplaceable outlet for them while under those conditions — as is the feeling of appreciation they receive from all of us who support them,” says Denny.

-Portrait Stream Whole New Album Via Website Of Zero Tolerance!

Swedish Heavy Metallers Portrait are streaming all of their sensational new album CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE! Hear it all here at Zero Tolerance: http://v2.ztmag.com/exclusive.html

CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE is an album transcending the most glorious moments of ’80s Heavy Metal. Portrait are turning something great into something greater — you can only describe this album as the wet dream of any fan of Heavy Metal.

CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE is Metal in its purest form — relentless, energy-driven, complex, dark, catchy and HEAVY!

Comments Portrait guitarist Richard Lagergren: “The eight songs on CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE constitute Portrait’s by far darkest, hardest and most intense material to date. This album is an outburst of a long time of targeted hard work, an intense creative process and pure black magic. To Hell and back and to Hell again! To achieve the goals we had for this album, working with someone not being the obvious choice for our type of music proved to be just the right (or if you will, wrong) decision. CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE sounds like Portrait was always meant to. It is hate, and it is love. And in many ways, it is our true debut album.”

1. Beast Of Fire
2. Infinite Descension
3. The Wilderness Beyond
4. Bloodbath
5. Darkness Forever
6. The Nightcomers
7. The Passion
8. Der Todesking

Portrait is:
Per Karlsson – vocals
Richard Lagergren -guitars
Christian Lindell – guitars
Joel Pälvärinne – bass
Anders Persson – drums

The relentless, Swedish heavy metal monster known as Portrait spawned in the year 2006 with the intention to bring back the dark energy that once was the cornerstone in many a classic metal release, but was long gone, raped by the hippie-infested power metal and retro- as well as modern “thrash” metal outfits of the day, whose entire existence the band spat whole-heartedly upon, hungry to take back the flag of hate, and then exterminate the entire world.

CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE is out now on CD and 2-Gatefold-LP via Metal Blade Records.

“Everything great about thrash — infectious, galloping riffs, hummable choruses, a vast array of gang vocals in ‘DOA’ — is employed, with their ace in the hole being Reece Scruggs, whose sumptuously-phrased solos, balancing shred, fiery modal moves and soulful, blues bends will suck in everyone from guitar nerds to song-structure curmudgeons.” — Terrorizer

“Havok have the chops and the ability to prove that they have the staying power to last in this genre.” — About.com

“Old-school thrash fans are going to be wreaking Havok’s TIME IS UP on their neighbors with the windows rolled down and the volume cranked up to 11. It’s an excellent disc full of monster riffs, solos and grooves.” — Metal Underground

“…they have the flashy skill, ridiculous song writing chops and prodigious lead guitar world that’ll have even the most jaded ears saying, ‘Okay, just this last once…'” — Rock Sound

“Havok keep the guitars to 11 and scream some sweet licks… I do not know why they are not opening the Big Four tour.” — Stereokiller

-Norway’s Dark Metal Band Dominanz Sign With Rock N Growl Distro

Norway’s Dark Gloomy Atmospheric Metal band Dominanz sign a distribution deal for the new album AS I SHINE with Rock N Growl Distro.

Roy Nordaas – Vocal, Bass, Guitar, Synth (ex Cult Of Deception)
Jørn Tunsberg – Guitar (ex Hades Almighty, Immortal, Old Funeral)
Frode Gaustad – Drums (ex Thy Grief)
Renathe Håpoldøy – Female Vocals

Dominanz – “The End Of All There Is” video

The video for “The End Of All There Is” was filmed in a place called Dale, deep in a valley of Fjord. The video was recorded in a huge factory, which was established in 1869, but is presently closed. All of the props used were found in the factory itself.

Dominanz is a modern and hellishly powerful band playing atmospheric and somewhat industrialized metal and plays dark, gloomy and atmospheric metal, but at the same time trying to do it in an engaging way. There are also elements from genres such as Death and Black metal. The musical expression is a mix between the aforementioned genres, but there are also influences from the ’80s Century heavy metal and 1990/2000 century electro.

The orchestra Dominanz is a successor of the project called Cult Of Deception that was established in 2006 by Roy Nordaas. After a couple of years with composing Roy joined forces with Frode Gaustad former drummer in the black metal band Thy Grief, and Jørn Tunsberg guitar player in the epic black metal band Hades Almighty, and formerly in the bands Immortal and Old Funeral.

The AS I SHINE album release is scheduled in August 2011.

OSLO, NORWAY — Mortiis is giving fans an opportunity to get creative with the tracks from PERFECTLY DEFECT through the nearly-launched “Mortiis Remixed” site ( http://www.remix.mortiis.com/ ).

The site is a forum that allows anyone with access to music programs such as Live, Cubase, Logic, and Garageband, to download separated tracks and loops and create their own remixes. “Or simply abuse at will,” Mortiis laughed.

Additionally, four mainland Europe dates have been added to the tail end of the tour.

“It’s been too long since we played in the UK,” Mortiis said. “We’re bringing over a new sound and a new band since we were last there. I think people will be surprised. It’s a new monster now. We’ve turned our backs on a dark past and we look forward to a brighter future. What better place to start than the UK?”

June 29 – Leamington Spa, UK @ The Assembly
June 30 – Manchester, UK @ Academy
July 01 – Glasgow, UK @ The Classic Grand

-That Roxxcalibur bit is pretty intriguing. I’d never heard of this NWOBHM tribute act — and honestly, after I read that name I thought “Ugh… How cheesy!” — but after perusing the website ( http://www.roxxcalibur.com/ ) I’m definitely interested! What’s cool is that besides releasing lovingly-crafted NWOBHM tribute albums they also serve as the backing band for various NWOBHMers, such as Griffin’s William McKay and Savage Grace’s Chris Logue, to give those guys a chance to gig that they probably otherwise wouldn’t have. And what’s *really* cool is there’s a “FREE GOODIES” section of the website that has downloadable MP3s of live tracks and related rarities (including stuff from Viron and Kokoon, former bands of several Roxxcalibur members), plus the real gems: re-mastered rare tracks by the original NWOBHM artists: Twisted Ace – “I Won’t Surrender,” Sledgehammer – “Living In Dreams,” Badge – “Silver Woman,” Frenzy – “This Is The Last Time,” Apocalypse – “Stormchild,” Sparta – “Tonight,” No Quarter – “Survivors,” Fugitive – “Don’t Tell Me I’m Crazy,” Smokin’ Roadie – “Midnight.” Awesome stuff!

-Wow, what is up with that Michael Schenker stuff? How many times are people going to re-package and re-release the same material? How very Kiss-like. 🙂 I’m a little confused about which versions of “Doctor Doctor” and “War Pigs” are included on BY INVITATION ONLY though; I’m assuming they’re the original “full band” versions from HEAVY HITTERS and not the instrumental versions that were tacked onto DOCTOR DOCTOR: THE KULICK SESSIONS.

-So we can completely disregard Sweden Rock Magazine’s list of top albums from the last 10 years, right? Iron Maiden’s A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH at the top spot? Yikes!!! (Cool to see Avantasia on there, though.)

-Yes, that Hell press release really did say the band is back after “two centuries.” I guess they measure time differently down there.

-Love that Powerwolf song title: “Sanctified With Dynamite.” Awesome.

-In my current playlist: U.D.O. – REV-RAPTOR (AFM Records), Bill Leverty – ONE (SINGLE) (indie), ColdSpell – OUT FROM THE COLD (Escape Music), Twisted Tower Dire – MAKE IT DARK (Cruz Del Sur Music).

EVICK – REFLECTIONS (B) Potomac Records, 2011

If you are looking for the third release from Evick, you need to head to your computer and forget your local record store — if you are lucky enough to still have one nearby. Produced by his own label, Potomac Records, Evick is committed to keeping things green and releasing music in the digital format. But don’t think that lead singer Pete Evick doesn’t see some drawbacks to the Internet. On his own site he says that music needs to include at least some elements of face-to-face interaction. “You need to be able to shake hands and kiss babies and people lost sight of that with the Internet. It’s still important to walk across the street to your neighbor’s house, or your buddy’s house and say, ‘I wrote these songs…'” Evick has been around the block, but hasn’t lost the style or enthusiasm that we loved about those great ’80s bands — the ones that still exist today. Yes, you have probably heard them more than you realize — the day job for this band is working as Bret Michaels’ solo touring band. However, that doesn’t stop the band from making its own tunes. As much as you may hear the influence of their idols (Poison, Van Halen), they are holding on to their own sound and can entertain fans beyond their Manassas, Virginia backyard. Evick (lead vocals, guitars) and his best friend of 22 years, Chuck Fanslau (drums, percussion, backing vocals) created the band, which is rounded out with “Dirty” Ray Scheuring (bass, backing vocals) and Rob Jozwiak (keyboards, backing vocals). Evick doesn’t stop there, also earning his first gold record for work with Paramore. You may also recognize the band from Bret Michaels’ “Go That Far” video (from Michael’s “Rock Of Love” VH1 shows), or even their own video for “Thomas Drive.” This third release from the band is good enough to get you online to look up their previous work (ANACHRONISM and SUNSET TO SUNSET). REFLECTIONS includes “Late Nights, Good Times” would be a great song to listen to after a bad, too-long work week to get you through the traffic in a better mood than when you started; the harmonies at the end are a great touch to get a live crowd singing along. “Prom Queen” is a hysterical look back at your high school days, in some ways a more rockin’ and better version of the pop song done by Bowling For Soup in 2004 (“1985”). Other musicians may talk about keeping it real, but Evick sings about it in “Real Thing,” which is a faster, guitar-driven track. “Reflection” is the slowest song here, but not a power ballad. This is one to play when you have the top down and are out on the road, but need to keep your speed in check. The song with the hardest edge would be “So This is Goodbye,” which could be seen as a slightly nicer version of Motley Crue’s “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away).” Any fan of Poison, Michaels, or Van Halen will appreciate this effort and be looking for a live fix; though Evick doesn’t always find time to tour as themselves, they are the road dogs out with Michaels as he tours. Try it out — and don’t forget your cover art!
