-Accept Guitarist Herman Frank Hurt During Stage Fall!

[Note: This is from a Nuclear Blast update. – Tim]

Accept were forced to play as a four-piece during their concert in Houston, Texas on Saturday, May 7 after the band’s guitarist, Herman Frank, suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in a stage fall the previous night in San Antonio. Herman fell backwards during the song “Bulletproof” and will miss the remaining dates of Accept’s “Blood Of The Nations” Tour 2011. Of course, the band has done this before. Accept performed and toured as a four-piece during the 1990s as well, and the Houston show was a perfect example that the four of them (Wolf Hoffmann, Peter Baltes, Mark Tornillo and Stefan Schwarzmann) can still blow the roof off and concert hall!

Baltes explains: “Unfortunately, Herman had an accident during last night’s show in San Antonio. He tripped and landed hard on his back. Even though he managed to finish the show, his pain became unbearable as we arrived in Houston. He was taken to the emergency room, where the doctors discovered four broken ribs and a punctured lung. He will remain at the hospital for now. Considering his condition, his spirit is great, and we all need to give our support to him as he recovers from his injuries. In the meantime, the band will continue the tour, and Herman will rejoin us as soon as he is all healed up and good to go.” The band is now on their way to South America for the final leg of the tour.

Of course, http://www.acceptworldwide.com/ will keep you updated on Herman’s condition. We all wish him all the best and a quick recovery!

-Helstar To Embark On Summer Of Hate Tour In June

Houston’s heavy metal kings Helstar are set to blaze a trail east next month on their six-date Summer Of Hate US tour, the newest rash of ongoing performances in support of the band’s seventh studio full-length, GLORY OF CHAOS. Released onto North America in February via AFM Records, amidst a flood of critical praise of the album’s crushing speed/power metal attack, GLORY OF CHAOS is a ballsy, blazing, full-length display of pure American heavy metal, which elevates the classic Helstar sound to aggressive new measures.

Helstar Summer Of Hate US Tour:
6/17/2011 The Rail Club – Fort Worth, TX w/ Solitude Aeturnus, Era De Guerra
6/18/2011 Dirty Dog Bar – Austin, TX w/ Ignitor, Dead Earth Politics, Headcrusher

6/25/2011 The Blue Room – Secaucus, NJ w/ Armor Column, Bröhammer

“…the riffs full-on smoke, straddling the line between thrash and power metal, not to mention the lead guitar work which really cooks. In fact the whole band is in top form here. 4/5” – The Metal Crypt

“When you have James Rivera who still is one of the best vocalists in metal and he doesn’t hold back on this recording, along with an extremely effective lineup of musicians how can you go wrong? 4.5/5” – Sea Of Tranquility

“This is likely their heaviest album… the band have never sounded so vicious. 4/5” – Metal Rules

“Considering the album’s velocity and brutality, the group doesn’t turn its back on melody. 8/10” – Blistering

“GLORY OF CHAOS sees the band moving into the new era of thrash and death metal with the band adopting some new techniques. 4/5” – The Right To Rock

“It’s especially gratifying when a classic band comes up with music that is both modern in design and flavor, yet remains obligingly antiquated in all the right spots. 4/5” – Metal Psalter

-Metal Blade Records Signs European Deal With L.A. Hard Rockers DC4 Feat. Jeff Duncan Of Armored Saint And Former Dio Guitarist Rowan Robertson!

Metal Blade Records is proud to announce the signing of the L.A. Hard Rockers DC4!

Forming as the 21st Century became a reality DC4 came to be when Jeff Duncan met Rowan Robertson, the band’s musical pedigree is virtually unrivaled by their peers. “Jeff and I met when a local promoter named Happenin’ Harry asked us both to be in his backing back for a few shows in the L.A. area and in Chicago,” relates Robertson. “When we got back to L.A. he just flat-out asked if I wanted to join DC4 and we got along so well and played so great together that I just had to do it.”

Jeff recalls that “I wasn’t into the whole idea of auditioning guitarists, We would know the right one when he came long and that’s exactly what happened. He was looking for the sort of situation we had to offer and as it turned out, we were looking for him!”

Having spent time in such bands as the legendary Dio, metal heroes Armored Saint, the short-lived Violet’s Demise, and Odin — a band who had reached cult status by the end of the 1980s without ever leaving Hollywood — DC4 is much more than just your average hard rock act.

The band members of DC4 comment on the signing to Metal Blade as follows:

“It’s an honor to be on Metal Blade Records! I feel that we made a very honest and powerful record and to have it released by a label that shares our love for hard music is a blessing!” – Rowan Robertson

“I am thrilled and honored beyond belief! I have been in the Metal Blade family as a member of Armored Saint for most of my career so to have DC4 welcomed into the fold is about as good as it gets!” – Jeff Duncan

DC4 is:
Jeff Duncan – lead vocals, guitars
Rowan Robertson – guitars
Matt Duncan – bass
Shawn Duncan – drums, percussion

DC4 will release their third long-player ELECTRIC MINISTRY in the summer via Metal Blade Records Europe. More news and updates on the album to follow soon!

-AFM June Release Update: BloodBound, Debauchery, Lake Of Tears, Rev 16:8

AFM Records’ new onslaught of June releases are now available to North American writers, including upcoming full-length albums from BloodBound, Debauchery, Lake Of Tears and Rev 16:8, all set for release stateside on June 14.

Swedish power metal force, BloodBound, return with their fourth full-length release since their inception in 2006 this June. Entitled UNHOLY CROSS, BloudBound’s crisp, powerful style is embodied here at its finest hour yet within these 11 anthems, while the band also introduce new vocalist Patrik Johansson (ex-Dawn Of Silence) for the first time on record here. Mixed and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren (Sonic Syndicate, Scar Symmetry), UNHOLY CROSS resurrects the magical feeling heard on the band’s adored NOSFERATU album, yet with an updated approach. The album’s cover art was created by Mark “The Masque” Wilkinson, known for his work designing art for Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and countless other major acts.

After having shared the stage with the likes of Evergrey, Paul Di’Anno and HammerFall on European tours, as well major Euro festivals including Sweden Rock Fest, BloodBound are not only well-known for their excellent live performances, but also for their massive stage mascot known as “The Nos,” totally in the vein of Iron Maiden’s “Eddie.”

Set for release on June 14 via AFM Records, GERMANY’S NEXT DEATH METAL, the seventh album from Germany death rock outfit Debauchery, is designed to serve as a middle finger to today’s mass media.

Debauchery creator Thomas Gurrath is already notorious throughout the European metal media for constantly unveiling gory cover artwork and incessant stripping blood-soaked women and incorporating porno video clips to his live sets. Blood and t*ts: this is the obvious concept through the eyes of Gurrath, and that blatantly shows through on GERMANY’S NEXT DEATH METAL, which surges with both death metal and arena rock influences simultaneously over the course of this latest Debauchery public service announcement.

1. The Unbroken
2. Zombie Blitzkrieg
3. Warmachines At War
4. Animal Holocaust
5. Bloodslaughter Onslaught
6. Germany’s Next Death Metal
7. School Shooter

AFM Records will present the latest full-length from ever-morphing Swedish unit Lake Of Tears on June 14 in North America, marking the band’s first new album in over four years. This latest dark offering from Lake Of Tears, entitled ILLWILL, as always, shows their sound moving into new directions from all previous recordings, yet still holds true to the central core sound fans have come to expect with each release.

Now in their nineteenth year since formation in 2002, the band continue to incorporate somewhat progressive elements and spacious textures to their rock and metal backbone, their widely-appreciated versatility continually landing them appearances at varied major European festivals including Wacken Open Air, Tuska Open Air and Sweden Rock Festival. Recorded and produced at the renowned Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Soilwork, Amon Amarth, Katatonia) with Jens Bogren, ILLWILL demonstrates what Lake Of Tears stand for well to their diehard fan base and the new fans that will surely be drawn into the album’s ten engrossing tracks.

ILLWILL Track Listing:
1. Floating In Darkness
2. Illwill
3. The Hating
4. U.N.S.A.N.E.
5. House Of The Setting Sun
6. Behind The Green Door

8. Out Of Control
9. Taste Of Hell
10. Midnight Madness

Not the usual type of release expected from AFM Records, Swedish black metal outfit Rev 16:8 will unleash their sophomore full-length, ASHLANDS, via the German label on June 14, undoubtedly to be one of the most evil releases from the company this year.

Once known to the black metal world under former monikers Scythe, and then Bloodshed, the Stockholm-based unit adopted Rev 16:8 in recent years, and now bear their second full-length of blazing but cryptic black metal on the 41-minute ASHLANDS. Recorded and produced in the infamous Necromorbus Studios (Watain, Ondskapt, Funeral Mist, Armagedda) the album also features guest vocals by Acerbus of Ondskapt.

ASHLANDS Track Listing:
1. Agenda
2. Ashlands
3. Blackline Sundown

-Hell’s HUMAN REMAINS — “…The Most Important Metal Album Of The Year” — Released Now!

The international metal music press unanimously agree that today sees the release of one of the most important metal album of this year — HUMAN REMAINS from UK Metal act Hell. 24 years after the original incarnation, Hell are finally earning their respect which has long been overdue. Born from the early ’80s UK metal scene, their chances ended in 1987 with the Belgian label Mausoleum going bust and the death of original singer/guitar player Dave Halliday. Today, more two decades later Hell are back and they are on everybody’s lips.

Key media from the US, Europe and South America are all talking about “the most important metal release of the last 20 years” — “one of the best debut album in 20 years” with 15 reviews already suggesting the album as an “album of the year” contender.

HUMAN REMAINS is an extraordinary masterpiece which combines the feel of true metal and the modern production values of today.

“A New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. If you want the blueprint of finest true metal… this is it.

“This will be one of the landmark metal albums of the second decade of the 21st century. It is true metal and stunning.”
– Malcome Dome / Metal Hammer / Total Rock UK

“Theatrical vocals to die for, timeless heavy metal riffs to kill for and a production to swear by. A guarantee that HUMAN REMAINS will end up on a ridiculous of ‘Best of 2011′ lists”
– Thomas Vaananen / Sweden Rock

“A Metal masterpiece! I expected a good album from what i had heard before — but not such a metal masterpiece! it sits perfectly between its instantly identifiable nwobhm roots and more modern, but always classic heavy metal. goosebumps all over!”
– Gotz Kunemund / Rock Hard Germany

“HELLish, old school metal, I love it!”
– Wolf Hoffmann (Accept)

“Definately a ’80s jewel. The crazed psychedelic vocals in combination with the dramatic searing riffs, this will be loved by the fans of true metal of the ’80s. This album will get the netal communities attention.

However, despite our repeated requests, the promoters have failed to confirm or deny the rumors.

“The band is ready and eager to perform under the terms of our fully-executed contract. All that is needed for our performance to go forward is, among other things, receipt of our international flight tickets — which we were supposed to receive on May 15, 2011. They were not received.

“We await word from the ZepFest promoters. Only they can confirm or deny whether the rumours of ZepFest’s demise are true or untrue. We have been looking forward to playing the Festival and remain ready to do so. We call upon the ZepFest promoters to set the record straight, for performers and fans alike.”

The eighth studio offering from one of Sweden’s finest death metal exports, SURTUR RISING was released in North America on March 29, 2011 via Metal Blade Records and continues to reap praise from fans and critics alike. Amon Amarth nailed a cover spot of the April 2011 issue of Decibel Magazine and earned a 9/10 rating from Outburn who commended the band for delivering “a collection that is brimming with beefy riffs, insidious melodies, and a truly epic sense of scale.” Fearnet.com agreed saying Amon Amarth is now “at the head of the class,” Metal Review gave it a 9.2/10 score calling it “one of the band’s very best releases,” while Metal Army America offered up a grade “A” review noting, “from the Stockholm-bred riff style to frontman Johan Hegg’s Cimmerian-esque performance as growler du jour, Amon Amarth’s SURTUR RISING proves to be an essential and defining listen for band and fans alike.”

In a recap of the band’s live performance, Concertconfessions.com opined: “What is most beautiful about Amon Amarth’s triumph of America is that it’s as pure as the music itself… Friends sharing with friends the magic of the music, that is a true token of success and judging on the reaction from Southern California on Easter Sunday 2011 — Amon Amarth will have success for a very long time.” The Washington Times applauded the band for leaving, “the sold-out crowd awestruck by [their] mastery of melodic death metal,” About.com boasted, “I was highly impressed by Amon Amarth’s stage presentation, which easily rivals that of bands that normally fill arenas,” while Skullsnbones.com put it simply: “One band came and conquered Atlanta and their name is Amon Amarth. Hailz!”

-Riverside Return To The Laser’s Edge For 10th Anniversary Mini-Album’s Release

Poland’s progressive rock band superforce, Riverside, have signed with The Laser’s Edge Records for the North American release of their upcoming mini-album, being released in celebration of the band’s 10th anniversary!

Having amassed an incredible, devoted fan base over the past decade, Riverside are the largest progressive rock band in Poland, selling over 200,000 units to date worldwide, performing at major prog festivals throughout North America and Europe, touring heavily in supporting Dream Theater and others, as well as extensively headlining their own tours.

Riverside will return to the roster of premier prog rock label The Laser’s Edge — the label having released the band’s acclaimed 2004 debut album OUT OF MYSELF — for a special release, in commemoration of the band’s 10th anniversary. The MEMORIES IN MY HEAD mini-album segues three long tracks into one cohesive entity, submerging the listener in over 33 minutes of incredibly dexterous progressive musicianship. The new material showcases Riverside returning to their “spacier” early work, as heard on OUT OF MYSELF; a style not only suited for progressive rock connoisseurs, but also to fans of the mellower end of the rock/metal’s spectrum, citing artists like Anathema and Porcupine Tree.

2. Living In The Past
3. Forgotten Land

The Laser’s Edge will release MEMORIES IN MY HEAD onto North America soil on June 28, 2011. Stay tuned for more details.

-Ravenland: Interview With New Female Single And EP Artwork Revealed

In a recent trip to Europe, Tatiana Berke, Ravenland’s new female singer, was interviewed by Ravenheart Music, the British label responsible for the release and distribution in Europe of the band’s new EP. This interview is the first one with Berke and it was made by Dave Smith, who showed a little bit of the new frontwoman which will share the vocals with Dewindson Wolfheart and revealed the artwork of the MEMORIES EP, made by the Brazilian artist Jean Michel (Designations Artwork). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below:

Ravenheart Music: How did you hook up with Ravenland?

Berke: I was out of the music scene for 3 years more or less because my job was consuming all my time, but when everything got more calm and stabilized I decided to return to music and honestly I was lost because 3 years away from the scene makes you lose all your contact, it’s almost another life! But I was talking with a personal friend of mine, Jaime Abreu, that I would like to have a band again with. He told me that my return was a good choice and maybe he could help me because he knew a nice band whose female singer had recently quit, so less than 2 days later Dewindson called me and we talked a lot. Everything was really fast, in the same week I was trying to sing the songs. We did some rehearsals and now here I am!

Ravenheart Music: Does it make you nervous that your are linking up with such an awesome band?

Berke: Yes, a lot actually! They have already shared the same stage with bands that I admire and especially because Camilla was much loved by fans. I hope I will also have this kind of affection. However, I have been told to imagine I am Madonna, and the nerves will melt away.

Ravenheart Music: When you are relaxing what music do you like to listen to?

Berke: I like many different kinds of music from Loreena Mckennitt to Ulver but like everyone else, I have some favourite artists that I listen to more often, it’s almost like a religion for me. These artists are: A perfect circle, Kari Rueslatten, Tori Amos and Anathema

-No-Man’s Tim Bowness And Nosound’s Giancarlo Erra Team Up On Memories Of Machines’ Debut Album WARM WINTER

NEW YORK — Memories Of Machines’ WARM WINTER, the highly-anticipated debut from the art rock collective led by No-Man’s Tim Bowness and Nosound’s Giancarlo Erra, will be released July 191 via Music Theories Recordings (Mascot Label Group).

Both Bowness and Erra are well-known in the art rock world as prolific musicians with a variety of projects on the go (Bowness recently co-produced ex-Fairport Convention singer Judy Dyble’s acclaimed TALKING WITH STRANGERS album).

The exchange of ideas and music that would become WARM WINTER began in 2006, with Bowness in England and Erra in Italy. Over the next four years the album slowly came together via recording sessions in Manhattan, Sweden, Rome, and the UK.

The result of these sessions, WARM WINTER, is an epic album which possesses an unusual intimacy and ambience.

“All of the projects I’m involved in have a distinct identity, I think, and mostly that’s due to the particular combination of writers or musicians involved,” Bowness said. “Unlike some of the other projects I’m in, we didn’t really sit down and write together, or improvise in the studio. I’d say the way that we’ve written together has been pretty similar to how I used to work with Steven Wilson in the early days of No-Man.”

For WARM WINTER, Bowness brought a couple of complete songs to the table and Erra helped to develop them. Likewise, Erra also brought in several instrumental tracks that Bowness wrote lyrics and melodies for. The production, arrangements, and final track selection were a joint effort.

“MoM has been a genuine collaboration and I think we’ve arrived at a middle ground that works well for both of us,” Bowness explained. “That said, I think MoM sits comfortably with No-Man in that it’s a project that communicates on a slightly larger scale than most of what I do. Without sacrificing subtlety or idealism, I hope that there’s something epic and accessible about MoM, which probably can’t be said about some of the other things I do.”

WARM WINTER includes stellar guest contributions from the likes of Grammy nominated producer Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, No-Man, etc.), Peter Hammill (Van Der Graaf Generator), Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree), Julianne Regan (All About Eve), Jim Matheos (OSI/Fates Warning), and Ricard Huxflux Nettermalm (Paatos).

“Everyone gave something unique to the album,” said Bowness. “The nice thing is that all the playing is subtle and working for the music rather than the musician’s egos. Perhaps the guest parts that stand out most are Huxflux Nettermalm’s assured drumming, Julianne Regan’s backing vocals, which are unlike any I’ve worked with before, Marianne de Chastelaine’s lyrical cello playing, and Steven Wilson’s mixing, which has given the project a greater sense of cohesion and directness, I think.”

The name of the project was partly based on the William Burroughs title “The Soft Machine.”

“I quite liked the idea that, obviously, a machine on one level evokes industry and mechanization, and on another level, evokes human beings. Memories Of Machines suggest memories of people and places and also nostalgic visions of industrial wastelands. There’s something evocative in the three words, I think.”

A video for an edit of the track “At the Centre of It All” may be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_PRRhBPGxQ . The video was directed by Grant Wakefield and features Peter Hammill on guitar and Colin Edwin on double bass.

-Gift Of Destiny Issue Larry Elyea-Produced CD, THROTTLE

Capturing a sound that manages to mix elements of Hard Core, Metal and old school Punk Rock, the four-man band Gift Of Destiny should garner a strong following with their just-released CD, THROTTLE. Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, the group consists of singer Los Hernandez, guitarist/ backing vocalist Mikey H, Drummer Jake, and Bassist B-Low.

The CD is the culmination of songs the band recorded with Larry Elyea at Minds Eye Digital in Peoria, Arizona. Elyea is no stranger to heavy music. Some of the bands he has recorded include Sevendust, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch and Authority Zero. “I’m amazed at how much the band was able to accomplish, explains Elyea. The music is raw and energetic.” Mikey adds, “Our first session was a test to see what we had. We recorded five songs in two days; when we walked out of the studio we knew we had something special. We went back in the studio and recorded the remainder of the record in three days.”

The 11-track CD comes out swinging on the groove-heavy, “Raise Some Hell.” This song won the band a radio contest on the #1 active rock station 98 KUPD in Phoenix, Arizona. “Raise Some Hell” also won a contest the station has called “Rock Wars,” beating out Avenged Sevenfold and All That Remains for “Song Of The Year.” As a result of the win, Gift Of Destiny played a station sponsored event with Red Line Chemistry and Rev Theory.

Another highlight on this CD is the SB-1070 Immigration law protest song, “FU-1070.” This song was featured in a blog by The Phoenix New Times and hailed by their music editor, Martin Cizmar.

“Far Away” is a great track, featuring a catchy chorus; heart felt lyrics, and some great guitar work. “The lyrics are about my wife and me drifting apart and trying to get back what we once had,” explains Hernandez.

Then there is the brutally heavy track “The Reason.” “Upon first listen one might think the song is about blaming someone for their pain, but it’s actually about looking in the mirror and realizing the problems lie within,” says Hernandez.

“My Life” is also a great track with some introspective lyrics and a cool mix of punk rock and hard core grooves.

“Fah Q” has a punk rock vibe and almost sounds like something that could have come from Slayer’s UNDISPUTED ATTITUDE.

Not to be overlooked is the cover of “Bloodstains,” which was originally released by punk rock legends, Agent Orange. The Gift Of Destiny version of this song is much heavier than the original but retains the vibe that made this song a classic. THROTTLE is a strong CD from start to finish and never gets dull or boring. Each song has a life of its own and the CD seems to get better the more you listen to it.

Gift Of Destiny – THROTTLE Track Listing:

1) Raise Some Hell
2) The Reason
3) FU 1070
4) Bloodstains
5) Far Away
6) Waiting
7) You Don’t Know Me

-Back in issue #591 we ran a press release from original Vicious Rumors bassist Dave Starr, now guitarist in WildeStarr, about his difficulties with drummer Larry Howe, and why Starr didn’t participate in the band’s reunion show at the Keep It True Festival in Germany. (Refresh your memory: http://www.myspace.com/wildestarr/blog/542781594 .) Our guy Paul found this response from Howe in the Vicious Rumors forums. It’s repeated here, unedited except for bleeping the naughty words.

Post subject: Re: Dave Starr press release 4-28-11

What a bunch of horse sh*t!! Dave Starr is simply a pathetic loser and is grasping at straws to promote his sh*tty music.. Unfortunately, this is the only place he has to do so! The truth is I really wanted nothing to do with the project, but he threw 400 in my face with a cd of 4 songs, painstakingly, I learned the material and recorded them..to sit through that weak demo with vocals that sounded like nails scratching on a billboard was traumatizing to say the least.. But I went ahead and recorded those songs .. Done deal.. Then they had 4 more with another check that were produced so horribly it was all I could do to learn the material and not want to throw up! So I told him, the only way to get this stuff down would be for them to come to my house and rehearse the material and work it out.. He said they were unable to do that.. But I had put my poor ears through countless hours of torture listening to this crap and really wanted to be done with it so I was ready to finish and they were not.. Time was running short as the warball touring was about to begin and Dave was pulling out because he really wants nothing to do with touring or gigging, I don’t know why he bothers to record.. Luckily I had a real performer ready to go in Stephen Goodwyn, my bassist from my Metallica tribute band and hd follows in nicely and remains a true team player, something Dave NEVER was! After a year of touring. I get the call from sad sack Dave and we wants to go in thd studio and I just simply cannot stomachplayong that crap and conclude that he got hid first checks worth out of me and I would give him back half of thd second installment,,200 bux but he refused so I’m done here.
