-Black Sabbath: BORN AGAIN 2CD Deluxe Album To Be Released May 30

Following the departure of lead singer Ronnie James Dio and drummer Vinnie Appice after the studio mixing of the LIVE EVIL album, Black Sabbath were once again on the lookout for yet another lead vocalist to fill the significant void left at stage front. The band turned to ex. Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan.

The resultant album and live touring certainly made for one of the more curious associations in the world of heavy metal. Much of this era of Black Sabbath has passed into rock folklore and was actually the source for much of the material used in the rockumentary movie, “This Is Spinal Tap!” From the replica stage production of Stonehenge which was too large for some of the venues on the world tour to the employment of a dwarf to dress up and play the part of the “devil-baby” from the LP front cover, the world of Black Sabbath took on a distinct air of the surreal.

Whilst the well received BORN AGAIN album and live dates succeeded in stoking the embers and kept the Sabbath flames burning, this would ultimately be a marriage built more on friendship and respect as opposed to any long-standing and compatible musical association. After one tour, Ian Gillan would eventually bid farewell and rejoin his old sparring partners for the Mk. II reunion of Deep Purple and leave Black Sabbath once more gazing into the crystal ball hoping the face of yet another lead vocalist would reveal itself.

For Iommi, Butler, Ward, Gillan, and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls, work would swiftly commence in May of ’83 at the Manor Studios in the village of Shiptonon-Cherwell, Oxfordshire. Produced by Black Sabbath and co-producer Robin Black, who had also worked on 1975’s SABOTAGE, 1976’s TECHNICAL ECSTASY, and 1978’s NEVER SAY DIE!, Sabbath’s eleventh studio release would represent a radical departure from the gloomy atmospherics and blackened lyricism that had forged their identity and spawned innumerable descendants.

Gillan’s approach to song-writing bespoke a lighter-hearted approach to what had, until then, been the primary concern of Butler. Album-opener “Trashed,” for instance, was inspired by Gillan’s boozed-up race around the Manor’s grounds in Bill Ward’s car that ended in near-catastrophe and a wrecked vehicle. “Disturbing The Priest” was the result of a door in the studio having been left open during playback, and a local vicar appearing in the doorway asking for the volume to be turned down as it was disturbing choir practice in the adjacent village.

For all of its off-kilter appearance however, BORN AGAIN was still Sabbath through and through. Musically twisted and possessed with more than a whiff of brimstone, the album is a thrilling glimpse into an alternative world.

For this re-mastered Deluxe Expanded Edition, a second disc containing two bonus tracks is included, with “The Fallen” being a previously unreleased studio outtake recorded during the original album session. Also included are nine tracks from the “BBC Friday Rock Show” broadcast of Black Sabbath’s appearance at the Reading Rock Festival in August 1983, which also includes a performance of Deep Purple’s classic “Smoke On The Water.”

-WhoCares: New Project Featuring Ian Gillan And Tony Iommi

[Note: This is from http://www.ear-music.net/ . – Tim]

WhoCares is Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath guitar master Tony Iommi. After having worked together some time ago on the Black Sabbath album BORN AGAIN they came together again to set up one of the biggest-ever super-bands for a good cause. Joining them on the “Out Of My Mind” single are some other rock legends: Jon Lord on keyboard (“Mr. Hammond,” partner with Gillan on all the Deep Purple classics), Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, ex Metallica bass player Jason Newsted and H.I.M. guitar player Linde Lindström. Together, they make up the most impressive ensemble ever to come together. This new creation is one to rock things to the ground. Coming together from all over the world, the members of this new project are some that are already highly known by all. All of these big names colliding is one of the biggest that the rock world has ever seen involving heroes from each of the top rock groups around the world! With reunions and the common element of music bringing some of these rock icons together for the first time, this is something that will go down in history.

Not only jamming together for the shear fun of things, this new project has united for a cause — rebuilding and helping the music school in Gyumari, Armenia. Both Gillan and Iommi have spent a lot of time in Armenia when touring there and have fallen in love with the country and the people. The nation that was struck by a massive earthquake on December 7, 1988 has been rebuilt but certain structures of the society have yet to be — one specific example is Gyumari music school. Having recorded two new songs, the intent is one of the best and most considerate actions the rock scene has ever seen. All of the money raised from the single will be going directly to the fund for rebuilding the music school never reconstructed since the disaster. They pulled together this new band to really show what support needs to be given in times of such disaster, not only sending wishes and hopes, but also acting upon them! Impressively, the lineup is one of the most interesting and astounding to come together. A reunion and new power band, there is a lot going on with old musical reconnections, new meetings and overall a mix of some of the top rockers the world has ever seen. Truly giving back to a place they love, this is also a once-in-a-lifetime event for the rest of the world to hear a new brilliant blend of top musicians as well as to support a sincere and selfless idea!

The single contains “Out Of My Mind” (an epic hard rock classic, destined to remain in time as a hard rock milestone), “Holy Water” and a 30-minute documentary that shows Gillan’s and Iommi’s involvement with the Armenia cause over the years. Also being released is the extremely limited 7″ vinyl edition with only 1,000 numbered copies in production, making these the rarest of the rarities. Be sure to experience the coming together of the top rock geniuses and not to miss out on one of the most honest and brilliant rock movements of 2011.

-Heathen Issues Roadside Update; Live Footage Available

Bay Area thrash legends Heathen have been pummeling their way through the US and Canada on tour with the mighty Destruction. The North American Reckoning Tour 2011 commenced on April 26 in Vancouver, and despite some stressful bus issues and being forced to miss their Detroit gig, has successfully pillaged its way through nearly two week’s worth of dates with another week and a half to go.

Commented Heathen guitarist Kragen Lum from the road: “Well, the tour got off to a rough start but despite the tour bus breaking down, having to get another bus, and barely making it to the Denver show things are back on track. All of the shows have been killer and we’re having a great time with the Destruction guys. We’ve got 13 shows left on the tour so come on out and get your thrash fix!”

In regards to the Detroit show, Lum added: “Apologies to any Heathen fans that came out to see us in Detroit [at Harpo’s]. Unfortunately, the promoter for the show double booked the venue with two tours on the same night — the Destruction tour and the Cavalera Conspiracy tour — and then decided he couldn’t pay all of the bands. Consequently, we were bumped from the bill along with another band and did not get to play. We were at the venue and ready to go but the situation was beyond our control. Hopefully we can come back to Detroit in the near future.”

Despite being unable to play at Harpo’s, Lum has been joining Destruction onstage each night to play “Release From Agony.” Check out footage from Detroit here:

Heathen is touring in support of their critically-acclaimed THE EVOLUTION OF CHAOS full-length, which marked their first studio offering in nearly 20 years! Released in North American via Holland’s Mascot Records last year, the record reaped praise from critics and fans nationwide. “…this is as close as it gets to a modern-day thrash classic,” said Metal Underground in a 4.5/5 review. Added About.com in a 4/5 rating: “Old school thrashers certainly remember Heathen from back in the day, but their return will garner them a whole new generation of fans,” while Mind Over Metal noted: “…when combined with strong production and memorable artwork, you have a solid contender for one of the best metal releases of 2010.”

EVEN KEEL is front man Björn Lodin’s second album with the band, and here Lodin shines! The chemistry between Lodin and the lads is apparent right throughout the album. Joining the band for the first time is feisty guitar man Zsolt Vámos, who has also lent his hand in the song writing department. Hard let it soar with no rules heavy rock laid out. EVEN KEEL is the sound of a tightly tuned unit floored to max. This album totally rocks!

Hard is a Swedish-Hungarian hard rock group, formed in 2004 by some of the finest musicians of the Hungarian hard rock scene. After two critically acclaimed and award nominated albums in Hungary, the band decided to take a step forward and hit the international music territories with English lyrics. After several lineup changes, their first international offering, TRAVELER, was released worldwide in March 2008.

The band has appeared in the biggest international hard rock & heavy metal magazines, such as Metal Hammer, Burrn!, Fireworks, Hardline, Powerplay, etc. In August 2009, the band announced that they have joined forces with acclaimed Swedish vocalist/guitarist/producer Björn Lodin (Baltimoore). The band released a new album entitled TIME IS WAITING FOR NO ONE, in February 2010 and are now ready with yet another smashing release: EVEN KEEL released on BLP Music, March 2011.

-Prog Rockers Pallas Continue The SENTINEL Saga With New XXV Release

NEW YORK — To mark the 25th anniversary of its release, seminal prog-rockers Pallas have issued the long-awaited sequel their SENTINEL album, XXV, on Music Theories Recordings.

XXV picks up where THE SENTINEL, a concept album that incorporated a futuristic version of the tale of Atlantis along with Cold War-influenced themes, left off. The album’s first track, “Falling Down,” bridges the two releases.

The album’s second song, “Crash And Burn,” is where the story starts to unfold. “The lyrics set the scene in ‘Falling Down’ and now we cut away in cinematic terms to a very dramatic sequence of the story,” explained bassist/guitarist Graeme Murray. “Once again the human race is in dire straits. The Koreans are at war, the Middle Eastern Muslim states have banded together to form the United Islamic alliance, the planet is beset with ecological problems, and the world banking system has all but collapsed. Business as usual!”

XXV represents a mature band with consistently impressive writing skills, and top-notch musicianship to match. “I am immensely proud of XXV and feel that we have produced one of the finest and most cohesive Pallas albums ever,” Murray said. European critics have agreed, stating that XXV is a contender for prog album of the year.

Though XXV is a sequel to the hugely successful debut, let there be no mistake: Pallas has remained active over the last quarter-century, writing, recording, and releasing a number of albums. The Scottish band did, however, replace its longtime vocalist Alan Reed with Paul Mackie just before the recording of XXV. Though it was a risky decision, fans will certainly have no worries once they hear Mackie’s powerful performance on XXV.

“I think people were very apprehensive about Paul after the press announcement that we had parted with Alan, but once people heard the album most of them have very positive about Paul’s voice and his charisma and presence on stage,” Murray said. “The band is certainly a happier place these days, and we feel we have made the transition to a new lead voice successfully.”

Pallas headlineed the IO Pages Festival in the Netherlands on April 15.

Music Theories Recordings is a subsidiary of Mascot Records, an independent record company based in The Netherlands that specializes in guitar music, from metal to instrumental guitar, hard rock, prog rock and (guitar) fusion.

-Scelerata: Checking In From Blind Guardian’s Studio

As previously reported Scelerata is working on their third album, which is being partially recorded in Germany at Twilight Hall Studios, studio owned by Blind Guardian, and being produced by Charlie Bauerfeind (Helloween, Blind Guardian, Rage, Saxon, Halford, HammerFall, Motörhead). On April 24th drummer Francis Cassol and guitarist Renato Osorio flew to Germany. Check out below a few comments about the recording process.

“We are in Twilight Hall Studios, Germany, for the past days, working in Charlie Bauerfeind’s pace. His way of work is to exhaust the drummer, playing around four hours a day, extracting the maximum of strength and accuracy untill we achieve the desired result, unlike of I always recorded so far, recording three or four songs per day in long recording sessions. No wonder that the drum sound of his works always sounds amazing, and we can really feel the drummer giving everything he has to the song.

“Speaking of drum sound, I never had one like this. It’s being a good surprise for all os us, even for Charlie! We are using Dani Löeble’s (Helloween drummer) drum kit, a new Yahama Birch Custom Absolute, which had never been in a recording room. The mics are Earthworks, a North American brand used by musicians like Neil Peart, for example. Most of cymbals are Paiste, belonging to the studio, except for three or four, which also belong to Dani.

“The Twilight Hall Studios obviously revolves around Blind Guardian. There are banners, photo panels, posters, T-shirts, mugs, etc. Everything from Blind Guardian. Here runs not only the studio, but also the band’s accounting office, merchandising and equipment warehouse. It is really big, very organized and professional, really consistent with how big Blind Guardian is.

“We are really happy with the results we got so far! Charlie is an outstanding guy, always friendly and good-humored, but also completly committed with his work, which makes us understand why he is requested by the major European metal bands!

“Soon we will send more news and photos!” – Francis Cassol

Recently Scelerata posted online a demo version of “Rising Sun,” track which will be featured on the new album. Check it out at http://www.myspace.com/scelerataband or http://www.scelerata.com/ .

-Swedish Glam Metallers Sister Premiere Second Single And New Video Clip Featuring Clips Of Each Track Off HATED On Revolver Magazine’s Site!

Be sure to head over to Revolver Magazine as the site premieres the second single, “Bullsh*t And Backstabbing,” off Swedish sleaze and punk influenced metal band Sister’s upcoming album HATED (out June 3/6 in Europe). The magazine is also premiering the latest teaser video for Sister that features clips of all tracks off the upcoming release to give metalheads worldwide a taste of what’s to come on the band’s Metal Blade debut. Check out the new single “Bullsh*t And Backstabbing” and the video clip here:

The band comments on the new single “Bullsh*t And Backstabbing:” “Pretty much all of our songs takes form in the rehearsal and ‘Bullsh*t And Backstabbing’ was no exception. It’s a song with an ‘up yours’ mentality and fits us as a band perfectly. It’s a fast track compared to the title track and we knew right from the start that this was goin’ to be one of the band’s favorite songs on the album. When we took it into the studio it really turned out exactly the way we wanted it to and working together with Martin Sweet (Crashdïet) and Calle Fäldt (Deranged) was really the best way we could have done for this album. Recording the guitars and bass in the studio in Staffanstorp in the southern part of Sweden and vocals in Sweet’s studio in Stockholm gave us the possibility to focus on the right things while recording; a lot of stress because of a really tight schedule, but with a result that turned out really f*cking great!”

Fans still have the chance to pre-order HATED at a special low price only available before street date. Go to http://www.metalblade.com/sister/ for info.

Track listing to Sister’s Metal Blade debut HATED:

1. Radioactive Misery
2. Body Blow
3. Bullsh*t And Backstabbing
5. Motherf*ckers (Like You)
6. Werewolves On Blackstreet
7. Spit On Me
8. The Unlucky Minority
9. Would You Love A Creature
10. Too Bad For You
11. Drag Me To The Grave

About the band:
Sister, who hails from Stockholm/Jönkoping Sweden, formed in early 2006 working hard to build up a name as a strong act both live and in the studio. Sister consists of four members — Jamie on vocals, Lestat on guitars and backing vocals, Rikki on bass and backing vocals, and Cari on drums and backing vocals — who combine the sounds of Punk, Glam, Rock, and Metal with an end result sounding something like the bastard child of GG Allin and Guns N’ Roses.

Sister’s Metal Blade debut HATED will be annihilating the world come June 3rd/6th, 2011!

-The New Jacobin Club Announce Misstress Nagini And Lady To Lineup

Saskatoon’s freak show metal collective The New Jacobin Club is pleased to officially announce the addition of Mistress Nagini and Lady to their stage show.

Mistress Nagini is a veteran performer, tribal dancer, sword handler and snake charmer; Lady is her cold-blooded co-star. Her commanding stage presence and exotic flavour is the perfect complement to the artistic barbarism of the New Jacobin Club and the wicked antics of the Angry Teeth Freakshow.

“Mistress Nagini is a pro, she makes all of us look undisciplined and wild, which is why it will look so powerful on stage. She performed at our April concert date with Voltaire, but it was a last minute sort of addition. What she’s doing on May 14th and in more shows to come will be a feature part of our set,” commented NJC guitarist/vocalist The Horde.

The New Jacobin Club will be celebrating 15 years on stage in their hometown of Saskatoon on May 14th at Fez with openers Black Earth. The band will be premiering re-written and re-orchestrated material from the mid 1990s that will find its way on a limited edition 15th anniversary NJC compilation to be released later this year.

Since their conception in 1996, NJC has released an EP and four albums their most recent being THIS TREASON, a concept CD/DVD based on the tragic medieval life and death of England’s notorious warlord Sir Hugh Despenser.

NJC has shared the stage with a diverse roster of touring acts such as Nashville Pussy, Groovie Ghoulies, KMFDM, Voltaire and appeared live on stage with Discovery Channel’s freak show reality program “Guinea Pig.”

I quite enjoyed Borealis’ debut offering WORLD OF SILENCE and the band’s short but spirited performance at ProgPower USA last year, quickly moving them onto my “one to watch” list as being an outfit with great potential. Well consider that potential realized on these Canadians’ second outing FALL FROM GRACE. Opener “Finest Hour” starts things off in fine form (although personally I could do without the ancillary harsh vocals), but things really get going on second track “Words I Failed To Say,” the band really proving their worth as quality songwriters. More first-rate material follows in the form of the excellent title track (this one alone worth the price of admission), “Breaking The Curse” and “Regeneration,” just to name some highlights as the whole thing is absolutely fantastic. It’s all here, the moving vocals, powerful rhythms, mellifluous soloing, stirring keyboards and creative drumming, Borealis delivering a near perfect Evergrey/Labyrinth blend. FALL FROM GRACE boasts an outstanding production by the band along with a killer mix courtesy of Jordan Valeriote, resulting in a great sounding album. What I find especially appealing is that Borealis have a real facility for the refined, excising the unnecessary to leave only the superlative elements. One of the best releases I’ve heard so far this year, I can now highly recommend FALL FROM GRACE to you…
