-Dream Theater — An Exclusive Look Into The Band’s Search For A New Drummer

[Note: This is from RoadrunnerRecords.com. – Tim]

NEW YORK, NY — A little more than a month after original drummer Mike Portnoy’s sudden departure from Dream Theater, the band held three days of auditions in New York City. Over an amazing and productive three-day period, the band played, jammed and spoke candidly with seven of the world’s greatest drummers, learning about them musically, personally and professionally, and assessing the fit of each drummer’s incredible chops with the band’s trademark prog-rock sound.

Dream Theater have been extremely sensitive to the fact that this is not only a monumental decision in their own lives, but also a critical moment in the lives of DT fans around the world. “The departure of our lifelong bandmate and friend was an unexpected and truly heartbreaking blow,” says guitarist John Petrucci. “The fact that as a result of that event we’d be introduced to seven infinitely capable and uniquely talented drummers was heartening.”

Dream Theater would like to share with its fans some of the intense process, along with the musical joy, that went into choosing a new drummer. Who is the best fit behind the kit?

Go to Dream Theater’s Facebook page to sign up for the mailing list and to receive more details about an exclusive and intimate look at the auditions, and to find out exactly when and how the momentous announcement about the band’s new lineup will be made. Also on Facebook, fans will be able to find out information about the band’s upcoming 2011 World Tour.

-Lizzy Borden Posts Recording Update!

Here’s an update from the Lizzy Borden camp:

“2010 was an amazing year for Lizzy Borden touring in Europe, Japan and the States with our ‘Appointment With Death Show.’ The festivals and headline dates in every country were all very special to us in one way or another. This was all possible due to our very well received APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH record.

“We created two epic videos that aired on MTV (one of which was nominated for video of the year on ‘Headbanger’s Ball’) and a brand new stage show that proved to everyone that this was a new era for Lizzy Borden. The APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH show and record took a giant leap forward into a whole new generation of fans all around the world. (Don’t miss our year end summary video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6ir9Rgp9uE ). We are now in the writing process for a new Lizzy Borden record as well as new videos and a brand new stage show soon to follow.

“Because we do not wish to repeat ourselves we are taking our time with this new release to make sure we create songs that inspire us for the visual medium as well as our usual audio mayhem. This new record is already heading in a more (individual) song oriented direction, and it is my hope that we end up with at least ten new songs that can stand on their own and will be the soundtrack for our new generation of Lizzy Borden fans, all the while satisfying our dedicated fans who have been with us from the beginning.

“We learned so much from last year in what you want from us from switching songs in and out of the set based on reaction, all of that is starting to feed into the writing for the new record. At one point last year we had seven songs in the set from APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH and the only complaint we had was to play longer! It is our strong desire that we have that same problem for our upcoming release.

“Because we want this new release to be very special and something very different than anything we have done before we are on the hunt to find the right producer that can understand the misunderstood. Finding that ‘right producer’ may be the biggest task we have at hand.

“Having said all of the above, we can’t stay off the stage for too long or we will start to go studio-crazy, so you just may find us out and about playing shows in 2011 while we work on the new record, possibly here and there all over the world. Please check in to our Facebook fan page for upcoming shows and more recording updates throughout 2011.

“We hope to see you all very soon!”

MetalTalk.net’s Dutch Michaels caught up with Michael Bormann’s US personal manager Leslie Monet whom further added that Michael Bormann is prime to be picked up by a major US label with all the crossover radio chart-toppers on his latest best selling release DIFFERENT, despite his astronomical success as an indy artist. Michael Bormann’s DIFFERENT is a strong contender for the 54th Grammy Awards as I am “extremely confident” that Michael will land onto the highly impressive Grammy short-list’s streaming for voters which is a huge honor in itself taking into consideration that more than 20,000 entries on any given year are submitted as history has proven with Michael Bormann making the cut with his previous solo releases CAPTURE THE MOMENT (2008), Michael Bormann’s first re-released (2009) on RMB Records with four brand new bonus tracks and CONSPIRACY (2006) with some of the biggest names in the music industry that are larger than life. Michael Bormann solo music is available for digital downloads at Amazon and iTunes Worldwide ranked one of the best selling independent artists of today. -Heathen: North American Tour To Commence Today In Vancouver

Today Bay Area legends Heathen kick off a long-anticipated North American tour with headliners/German thrash kings Destruction! The North American Reckoning Tour 2011 will commence at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver and ravage its way through 19 cities before drawing to a close at The Key Club in Hollywood. Warbeast will also be joining the trek.

Commented guitarist Kragen Lum: “We’re stoked to be going out on the road again with our friends in Destruction on the North American Reckoning Tour. Get ready for the chaos!”

Heathen will be touring in support of their critically-acclaimed THE EVOLUTION OF CHAOS full-length, which marked their first studio offering in nearly 20 years! Released in North American via Holland’s Mascot Records last year, the record reaped praise from critics and fans nationwide. “There are hardly any weak moments on the album and this is as close as it gets to a modern-day thrash classic,” said Metal Underground in a 4.5/5 review. Added About.com in a 4/5 rating: “Oldschool thrashers certainly remember Heathen from back in the day, but their return will garner them a whole new generation of fans,” while Mind Over Metal noted: “There’s nary a boring moment on the album, and when combined with strong production and memorable artwork, you have a solid contender for one of the best metal releases of 2010. The band’s current lineup includes Lum (Prototype), David White (vocals), Lee Altus (guitar; Exodus), Jon Torres (bass; Angelwitch) and Darren Minter (drums).

Seventh Wonder Announce New Drummer

Swedish progressive metal act Seventh Wonder after a long search are pleased to confirm Stefan Norgren (ex Lion’s Share) as their new permanent drummer after a long search to replace the departed Johnny Sandin.

Stefan is an experienced musician who was educated at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, has been a teacher and drum instructor for many years, possesses a great voice and also plays piano and guitar. Stefan brings a slightly heavier, angrier and more groove based drumming approach to the band.

On his appointment to Seventh Wonder Stefan comments: “I can’t wait to take on this challenge. Johnny’s work is insane so listening to the bands back catalogue and learning the drum parts has been both exciting and scary. My philosophy will be to stay true to the original drums while adding my personal touch.”

On Stefan’s arrival in the band Seventh Wonder guitarist Johan Liefvendahl comments: “When he walked in we instantly hit it off personally, which is very important in any band. We spent the day jamming and he auditioned a few SW songs and we all felt that what he brought was just what we were looking for. We’re very happy to have him aboard!”

Keyboard player Andreas Soderin adds: “Obviously, not having a drummer all these months had in a way brought the band to a standstill. When Stefan set up his gear and began tearing it up with us that day it was kind of like a rocket launch for us. Seventh Wonder is now at full speed ahead!”

Seventh Wonder released their fourth album THE GREAT ESCAPE in December 2011 on Lion Music. The video for the track “Alley Cat” from that release has seen over 130k views on YouTube:

Seventh Wonder will be headlining the prestigious ProgPower Europe Festival on Friday September 30.

LEGACY Picking Up Postive Press

LEGACY is being widely hailed as Twinspirits best work to date with some selected comments:

5/5 at http://www.ytsejam.com/

“Like contemporaries Circus Maximus, Sun Caged, and Mind’s Eye, Twinspirits have created the template for modern progressive metal — instead of playing by the steadfast symphonic rules, they don’t walk on thin ice or turn their music into an emotional train wreck or conjure up a concoction of overzealous vain ridden solos that go nowhere — there is catchiness, tough riffs, hook laden arrangements, and the passionate technical tinge that all makes this album something exceptional, as there is a lot for those whole the musical scheme of things and there is a lot for those who love ‘songs’ as well.”

96/100 at http://www.virtuosityone.com/

“Daniele Liverani is well known for his grand visions (‘Genius Rock Opera’ anyone?) but with Twinspirits he seems to have found his niche, delivering creating intelligent, mature and enjoyable metal all performed to virtuoso levels by all involved.”

9/10 at http://www.metalperspective.com/

“LEGACY is an album that will speak to the ears and hearts of every progressive metal fan. Liverani is an unrest musician and composer and has led the Italian progressive metalers to a fresh album of elegant progressive/power metal.”

4.5/5.0 at http://www.dangerdog.com/

“Once more, on LEGACY, Twinspirits delivers an ambitious, intriguing blend of melodic and heavy progressive metal. Thanks to a settled lineup, Twinspirits is hitting their groove. Strongly recommended!”

86/100 at http://www.powerofmetal.dk/

“Twinspirits is moving towards the major league with this album and LEGACY is a clear move in the right direction both soundwise as well as musically.”

4/5 at http://www.friday13thmetal.co.uk/

“This album features 11 tracks of operatic at times Progressive Metal and with this album have a 30 minute epic split into 5 parts entitled ‘The Endless Sleep’ is a masterpiece in its own right.”

Order online and full information on Twinspirits’ LEGACY can be found at http://www.lionmusic.com/cd/legacy.htm .

Fans of vinyl may choose between a black or a silver edition. All editions come with a free poster. This offer is only good while supplies last!

In addition, a new video will soon be released. The band issued the following update with regard to its production.

“Ahoy you bunch of bastards! We’ve just got back from sunny Belgrade in Serbia, where we’ve been filming the music video for our new song ‘Shipwrecked.’ No expense was spared in the making of it, and I can confidently say that it’s gonna be the best damn music video ever. ‘But how can you be so sure?’ I hear you ask. Here’s why: violin playing midgets! Hot medieval babes! Ridiculous CGI! Rampant alcohol abuse! All this and much much more! The video was directed by the mighty Ivan Colic (Epica, Kamelot, Kataklysm), and should be released sometime in May, a month before our forthcoming album BACK THROUGH TIME hits the stores! -Tony Martin To Guest On New Arrayan Path Album!

As announced last month, the new Arrayan Path album (IRA IMPERIUM) to be released in September through Pitch Black Records, will also feature a special guest vocal appearance. Ever since the announcement, fans have been bombarding the band to reveal who it is and although this was originally planned to be announced later this month, the band decided to spill the beans now so as to please all their fans.

The guest vocalist appearing on the band’s new album is none other than former Black Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin who will be sharing vocals on the album’s title track along with Nicholas Leptos.

In the band’s own words: “We are truly humbled to have worked with this amazing singer, one of our all-time favourites! His singing has always been (and still is) out of this world and of course this is also evident in his performance on the song “Ira Imperium (The Damned).”

-Ihsahn Confirmed For ProgPower USA

Former Emperor vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn will make his first American solo appearance at ProgPower USA, scheduled September 14-17 at Center Stage in Atlanta. Confirmed by festival organizer Glenn Harveston, Ihsahn replaces Arcturus on the Friday evening lineup of the popular music festival. Tickets are nearly sold out; fans are encouraged to buy tickets now.

Ihsahn comments, “I am very excited to get the opportunity to play at ProgPower. My backing band, Leprous, played the festival last year and had a fantastic time. Given the nature of my solo material, I believe this festival will be a great place to present it live. I have already performed at several festivals/shows in Europe in 2009/2010 and will do a few more this year.”

Ihsahn’s performance is expected to include selections from all three solo albums — THE ADVERSARY (2006), ANGL (2008) and his most recent, AFTER (2010). “As compelling as Emperor’s best,” says Decibel in a review of AFTER in their February 2010 issue. Continuing, the magazine notes, “Ihsahn sounds as fresh as he did fifteen years ago, but with the hindsight of a grown man.” Revolver called the album, “brimming with classical, goth, prog, and eighties-metal passages.”

After completes Ihsahn’s planned trilogy of initial recordings. The album showcases the Norwegian icon with drummer Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect), bassist Lars K. Norberg (Spiral Architect), and saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining). Currently at work on his fourth album, Ihsahn confirms he is eighty percent done with the songwriting and is planning for a mid-2012 release.

Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) Award Nominee Ihsahn (born Vegard Tveitan) began playing music at a very early age. As a teenager, his friendship with Tomas Haugen (a.k.a. Samoth) would trigger the start of his music career — one that to date includes over fifty individual recordings, five high-profile Emperor European tours (the band reaching US shores on only three occasions) and the respect of fans and peers worldwide. In mid-2009, Ihsahn gave his first live performance in Oslo supporting Opeth.

Ihsahn is endorsed exclusively by Ibanez Guitars, Line 6, Steinberg and Blackstar Amplification.

Tickets for ProgPower USA are available now via Ticketmaster.

Neal’s Book!

It’s finally done! Also, being released at the same time is Neal’s new book titled “Testimony – The Inspirational And Spiritual Journey Of A Prog Rock Musician.”

From the obscurity of dozens of California bar bands and nightclubs to the heights of some of the most prestigious concert venues worldwide, Neal Morse recounts the events that led him though the maze of musical, personal and spiritual experiences that shaped his life. Starting from his first musical endeavors as a child, Neal bears his soul as he recalls the pitfalls, heartaches and temptations along his journey.

This hard-hitting, inspirational expos√© takes the reader from Neal’s club days to the formation of Spock’s Beard and from the rigors of musical and personal burnout to the wondrous joy of spiritual fulfillment and purpose. The book spans approximately 230 pages in paperback form, and includes photos from all stages of Neal’s life.

Special Offer! Pre-order the TESTIMONY 2 Special Edition Box Set and the Book together for one low price. Neal will sign the first 200 books and Special Editions pre-ordered whether ordered separately or bundled together.

Here’s a bit about the CD and DVD:

Neal Morse – TESTIMONY 2

In 2003, Neal Morse released his TESTIMONY album. It was an artistic triumph that was and is still considered one of his best to date. With the sequel, TESTIMONY 2, Neal goes even deeper into unchartered musical and lyrical territory. Incorporating the legendary drummer Mike Portnoy and the excellent bassist, Randy George, this breathtaking album is a prog epic with depth that will dazzle and melodies that reach into the soul.

Disc 1 – TESTIMONY 2, the main disc tells us the poignant story of Neal’s life from the beginning of Spock’s Beard through when his leaving the band in 2002. The brilliant conceptual piece consists of 13 songs in three sections each over twenty minutes long.
Total time: 78:52

Disc 2 consists of three great tracks. Two shorter songs and one 26:00 minute prog epic, “Seeds Of Gold” which features a guitar solo by famed guitarist, Steve Morse.
Total Time: 36:51

This album marks the audio reunion of Spock’s Beard as it contains a “tribute” to Spock’s where Neal and the guys sing an elaborate vocal section that is reminiscent of the early days of the band.

Guests Include:
Nick D’Virgilio
Alan Morse
Dave Meros
Steve Morse
Paul Bielatowicz
Matthew Ward
Members of the Nashville Symphony

THE MAKING OF TESTIMONY 2 DVD – An in-depth look behind the scenes at the entire process of creating this amazing album. Edited by Chad Hoerner. This one really shines! Grammy Winning Producer Neil Dorfsman, Chinese legend Phil Chang and the Taiwanese rock band Power Station, performed all the guitar tracks on MOVING TO THE MOON, which was recorded at Ray’s own Dancetone Music studio. Ray says, “Working with Mark was a blast! We’d get rolling with a full head of steam and all of sudden something would remind him of a story from back in his Liverpool days … ‘one day me and Ringo were driving down the M1 and …’ and the session would come to a screaming halt. HaHa. The history this man has been involved in is simply amazing! I’m honored to be able to work so closely with him.”

Ray has recently placed songs in two episodes of MTV’s “Pranked,” co-written a song for the 40th Anniversary Colosseum release and was even asked by Colosseum leader, John Hiseman, what he used to record Mark Clarke’s voice on the demo. Ray also continues to do the “reading” gigs with a multitude of Chinese pop stars that perform in concert around the US while still turning out compositions for the Omni Music library on a regular basis.

His production credits also continue to grow, as he just finished producing Danish singer, Kamilla Kristensen, and is presently working in the studio with a couple of fresh faced youngsters developing their talents.

-KeyDragon: New MYTHICAL CD Keeps Mystique Alive

Recent Goth-Metal Release Flames On With Vision, Range And Expertise

The enigmatic entity known as the KeyDragon — a gothic-metal manifestation which has dwelt for years in the gold-country region of Grass Valley, California — emerges from its mountain lair once again to breathe forth a fiery musical offering entitled MYTHICAL. Written and arranged by dragon-centric keyboardist Ron Langford, the disk celebrates, as do all KeyDragon releases, the heritage and role of the dragon in human lore and culture around the globe. Recorded at KeyDragon Studios in Nevada County by Ron and a powerful posse of players, the MYTHICAL CD was released in mid-August, and is now available through various sources, including CD Baby. On this eighth KeyDragon compilation, the angelic voice of Tamara Venus Star once again provides a harmonious foil for Ron’s raging fulminations, while additional “dragon vocals” are furnished by Jake DeMarco. Holly Rains returns on drums and percussion, Andrew Grant plays bass, and guitar duties are credited this time to Roger Rains, with additional six-string support coming from Ben Blackmon on a couple of tracks.

MYTHICAL delivers a full-value clutch of 14 tracks, and it could come as a surprise to those familiar with the band that this eighth KeyDragon CD opens with a song which is not specifically about the incendiary reptiles that are so near and dear to Ron Langford’s heart. Entitled “Happy Face,” the disk’s first ditty commences with Tamara gently encouraging the listener to “take a deep breath … relax … and put on a happy face,” after which Ron stirs things up with his accustomed aggro approach, on top of a Primus-like sonic salad. The band then takes off for more familiar territory, first to find the Dragon of Borneo in the chunkily-rocking “Kinabalu,” and then to meet the “Ethiopian Dragon” in a song that features both cool synthesizers from Ron and sweet, Celtic-sounding melodies from Tamara. And next, surprise, comes “Do You Ever Feel Like?” — another song that doesn’t mention dragons by name, and which might remind one a little, at the outset, of Megadeth’s “Sweating Bullets.” Yet as Ron explores the theme of frustration, yelling about “smashing all around, stomping on the ground,” one sees that while dragons are not actually identified in the lyrics, Ron’s expressions of aggravation could still be interpreted as reptilian roars of wrath. Next, it’s off to Japan for “The Legend Of Yofune-Nushi,” which features clever instrumental interplay as a foundation for the story of an equal-opportunity heroine: a devoted daughter who slays a dragon and rescues a dad. The journey continues to ancient Greece — in its mythical days of yore! — for the thrash-toned tale of “Typhon,” the gigantic, coiled, god-battling beast who met his doom beneath Mount Aetna.

In another break from dreams of dragon-fire, a song called “So Fragile” gives the listener a prime example of the contrast between Ron and Tamara, who perform in a complementary yin-and-yang duality. Like “Typhon” before it, and many other KeyDragon compositions, the piece operates in dramatic point-counterpoint fashion, with Ron roaring in rage while Tamara tenderly intones, sometimes separately, sometimes simultaneously.

“A Stay In The Waters Kingdom” takes a look at a vintage remnant of French folklore, recounting the saga of a mighty, magical creature named Drac. Coming home to the New World, Ron and his musical minions unfurl three Native American dragon-tales this time around, ranging all the way from “Nanabozho,” taking place near Lake Superior, out to “Coyote And The Dragon” in the Pacific Northwest, and down to the Hopi Nation, in the Southwest domain of “Palulukon,” a great feathered serpent. The construction of “Palulukon” is based simply on an appealing piano foundation and a straightforward vocal delivery from Tamara, and the song is endearingly melodic and charming, as well as brief, clocking in at just over two minutes in length. “Coyote And The Dragon,” on the other hand, goes longer and louder, containing busy, progressive riffs that are partly due to guest-work by Ben Blackmon, while “Nanabozho” is highlighted by metallic influences that range from Maiden to Leppard to B√ĖC. Moving on, “The Wave Rider” is another thrasher that isn’t about dragons, nor is “Whose Life Is It?,” which charges out strong and heavy with a potent bass and drum impact, propelling a simple riff that soon combines with creative changes to keep things interesting. And the disk closes with “Rustam,” the story of a great hero from Persian folklore, who gained fame by vanquishing a fearsome dragon foe. Fans should be glad to find that the CD sleeve contains the lyrics — but be forewarned, some tiny type was used to fit all the words into a two-page spread.

As in previous KeyDragon releases, Ron sounds like many death-metal vocalists, as though he gargles with Drano, and this approach produces a tone that’s appropriate for one who seeks to emulate the dragon’s roar, evoking its fierce majesty. Ron’s guiding vision is singular and strong, and his musical choices remain his own, as he steadily avoids the sort of obvious, gratuitous cultural tie-ins that might appeal to others (no Chinese “Chopsticks,” Native tom-toms, or French can-cans, for instance). Ron provides his own punchy progressions and lyrical melodies, and brings them to life with great musicianship and production, ensuring that MYTHICAL is as expertly realized as it was ambitiously imagined. Holly’s precise drumwork is outstanding throughout the entire compilation, while Roger’s tight guitar phrasing and choppy chords team well with Ron’s keys and Andrew’s bass, filling the dragon’s cavern with imposing sound. While MYTHICAL might not be to the taste of all ears all the way through, the disk does contain much to please a wide range of aficionados. KeyDragon, the goth-metal dragon from Northern California, pours fire once more, inviting rockers far and wide to heed the clamor and partake of the MYTHICAL CD — a distinctive musical expression that roars, up and down the scales, for attention and respect.

-Iggy & The Stooges RAW POWER LIVE: IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS To Be Digitally Released April 26, 2011 Via MVD Entertainment Group

Free Song And Photo Downloads At InTheHandsOfTheFans.com

Iggy & The Stooges’ RAW POWER LIVE: IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS is the audio document of the reformed Stooges’ (Iggy Pop, Scott Asheton, James Williamson, Steve Mackay, Mike Watt) RAW POWER performance at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival on Friday, September 3, 2010.

Of the performance, Ben Ratliff of the NY Times writes, “Iggy Pop, now 63, knew that his body language translated into still photographs resembling Mannerist paintings… The Stooges attacked the album’s eight songs, in a different order, just about perfectly.”

Iggy and the band sound flawless as they rip through the archetype riffage of “Search And Destroy,” “Raw Power,” “Gimmie Danger” and more.

“Getting this top-notch performance of the entire RAW POWER album by The Stooges realized a life long dream,” said Iggy Pop. “This sh*t really sizzles and we are so obviously a crack band in a class of our own.”

MVD Entertainment Group, an industry leader in producing and distributing music-related audiovisual content, launched the “In The Hands Of The Fans” series with the intention of utilizing the energy and talents of fans, who by means of an online video submission contest, win the opportunity to film a performance of their favorite band in HD and then interview the band members after the performance. The album is already being promoted in Japan, and received a great review by Young Guitar magazine, which commented: “The Brazilian symphonic metal band Hydria has great highlights like the beauty of Mrs. Sch√ľler, who, with only 21 years old, charms us with her melodious voice, along with the loud male voice, which creates the feeling of agony and explosion by the guitarist/vocalist, giving an aggressive approach to a melodic and catchy atmosphere.”

Hydria is formed by Raquel Sch√ľler (vocals), Marcelo Oliveira (guitars and vocals), M√°rcio Klimberg (keyboards), Turu Henrick (bass) and Fabiano Martins (drums). Samples of the band’s work are available at http://www.myspace.com/HydriaOfficial .
