-Heavy Metal Greats The Rods Return With A “VENGEANCE”! May 24th And Confirm European Tour Dates With Dio Disciples

One band that many veteran metal heads feel should have hit the big time was New York’s The Rods. Comprised of members David “Rock” Feinstein (guitar/lead vocals), Garry Bordonaro (bass/vocals), and Carl Canedy (drums/vocals), The Rods would go on to open arena shows for such renowned groups as Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne (the BLIZZARD OF OZZ tour), the Scorpions, Rainbow (Joe Lynn Turner era), and during the mid ’80s, even had a then-unknown Metallica opening a headlining tour for them. Add to it the fact that Feinstein is the cousin of the late/great Ronnie James Dio (both played together in Elf) and Canedy is an acclaimed metal producer (having worked on classic early releases by Anthrax, Overkill, etc.), and it makes it even more baffling why The Rods never got their due.

But this appears to changing quickly, as the trio has signed on with the Niji Entertainment Group, a label that was created by Ronnie James Dio and his wife/manager, Wendy Dio. The band’s seventh release overall (and sixth release overall for Niji) is titled VENGEANCE, and will be released on May 24th, 2011. The release comes hot on the heels of Feinstein’s recently-released solo album, BITTEN BY THE BEAST.

The first single off VENGEANCE will be “The Code,” which features vocals from none other than Ronnie James Dio (one of the very last songs that Ronnie ever recorded, before his untimely death in May of 2010).

As renowned Quiet Riot/Ozzy/Dio/Whitesnake/Blue Oyster Cult bassist Rudy Sarzo remembers, “The Rods opened up for Ozzy during the 1981 BLIZZARD OF OZZ tour. I was blown away by their no-holds-barred metal onslaught performance and became an instant fan!” With a full US tour planned for the summer, fans will soon be able to experience the mighty metal of the Rods first hand themselves.

VENGEANCE Track Listing:

1. Raise Some Hell
2. I Just Wanna Rock
3. Rebels Highway
4. Ride Free Or Die
5. The Code (featuring Ronnie James Dio)
6. Livin’ Outside The Law
7. Let It Ripp
8. Fight Fire With Fire
9. Madman
10. Runnin’ Wild
11. Vengeance

-Jane’s Addiction Updates

[Note: This content was edited together from two separate press releases. – Tim]

Jane’s Addiction Offer Free Giveaway Of Their New Track “End To The Lies”

First Music Heard From The Groundbreaking Band’s First Studio Album In Eight Years

Album Set To Be Released August 2011 On Capitol Records

On April 7 Jane’s Addiction gave their fans the chance to be the first to hear music from THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST, their first new studio album in eight years.

The band’s singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins are giving away a free download of the final mix of “End To The Lies” exclusively at their website: http://www.janesaddiction.com/ . THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST will be released this August on Capitol Records (exact date TBA).

“To me, it sounds like an updated Jane’s Addiction as it has the hypnotic repetitive nature of some of our early work combined with a modern approach,” guitarist Dave Navarro told Spinner. “This track was released as a taste of the record for our die-hard fans. I can’t wait for everyone to hear our first single next month and then the album later in the summer.”

A video of Jane’s Addiction recording their new track “End To The Lies” has been made available on the band’s official YouTube channel, which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/janesaddiction .

An early, unfinished version of “End To The Lies” leaked last Wednesday (March 30) in Chile when Farrell made an appearance on the “La Ley D Rock” program on the Chilean radio station Radio Futuro, after which the song became an instant viral sensation.

Jane’s Addiction were in Chile as one of the headliners of the inaugural Lollapalooza Chile, which took place last weekend (April 2-3) in Santiago’s O’Higgins Park. See band photos below and this New York Times story:

For THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST, Jane’s Addiction are working with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol), with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek on the team. Sitek, best known for his production work on TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Foals, is writing, programming, and playing bass on the album. The band, with Chris Cheney on bass, will be touring throughout 2011 (see preliminary dates below).

Forming in 1985 in L.A., Jane’s Addiction as been firmly embedded in the collective pop culture consciousness for 25 years now. Perry Farrell stands out as one of music’s most forward-thinking and enigmatic frontmen. Dave Navarro remains a veritable guitar god. Drummer Stephen Perkins’ tribal stomp has also influenced a generation of percussionists. The hugely influential Los Angeles-based band has sold in excess of seven million records in the US alone. When lead singer Perry Farrell created the traveling Lollapalooza festival, it galvanized the alternative rock movement and brought it to a whole new level.

Jane’s Addiction have written the rule book for alternative music and culture through a combination of genre-defying classic songs and a cinematic live experience. Great bands break rules, but legends write their own.

See below for a handful of current Jane’s Addiction tour dates:
04/30 Dallas, TX – Edgefest
05/01 Houston, TX – Buzzfest
05/06 Los Angeles, CA – Music Cares Benefit
07/23 Bridgeport, CT – Gathering of the Vibes Festival
08/27 Reading, United Kingdom – Reading
08/28 Leeds, United Kingdom – Leeds

-Lion Music Label & Artist News

Borealis – FALL FROM GRACE Full Album Information

Released: May 20, 2011

Pre-orders taken now (will not ship before 13th May 2011) at http://www.lionmusic.com/cd/fallfromgrace.htm .

With soaring vocals, lightning fast guitars and a rock solid backline, Borealis is bringing leather back and dragging power metal up with it. It’s been that way from the start for these Canadian guys: all or nothing, and it shows in their music.

Musically, Borealis leans towards the classic power metal sound; not too far removed from bands such as Evergrey or even Savatage in their prime. Also, the more progressive bands like Vanden Plas or Dream Theater occasionally spring to mind. It’s all about energy, aggression, melodies and finesse — and Borealis has it all in spades.

With an independently released debut WORLD OF SILENCE safely in the bag, the band took it upon themselves to give ProgPower USA one heck of a kick-start when they visited the world famous festival in September 2010. With a 45 minute set comprised of songs from both the upcoming disc FALL FROM GRACE as well as their debut, they made sure all 1,100 people in attendance would leave with a positive memory of Borealis.

FALL FROM GRACE sees Borealis take a heavier approach for their label debut along with a more mature and progressive spin put on the songs when compared to their first appearance, but the band’s song writing process in which every idea is explored and considered has not changed. On the new material bassist Jamie Smith comments, “We feel that because of song writing process this is a very diverse, energetic album. Lyrically, a few avenues were explored for the album, taking a more ‘real life’ approach than was taken before. Again, a collaborative effort on the lyrics ensured that they fit the music perfectly and reflected every band member’s tastes in their own way.”

Produced and mixed by Jodan Valeriote in Ontario, Canada and mastered by Tomas Johansson at the world famous Panic Room Studios in Sweden (known for a.o. Scar Symmetry, Warrior Soul, Miseration), this album is a sonic masterpiece. And topped by the fantastic artwork by Frank Fiedler, the entire package comes off as one of this year’s most impressive power metal releases.

Borealis’ forthcoming offering FALL FROM GRACE is sure to see the buzz generated by both their debut album and ProgPower USA performance continue, and will certainly reach a larger audience world-wide come 20th May 2011 on Lion Music.

Borealis – “Where We Started” (official video)

1. Finest Hour

9. Forgotten Forever

Lars Eric Mattsson’s AURORA BOREALIS Released This Friday

Pre-orders for Lars Eric Mattsson’s forthcoming instrumental masterpiece AURORA BOREALIS – CONCERTO FOR ORCHESTRA & ELECTRIC GUITAR (released 15th April 2011) are now be taken at the LM store and will ship immediately.

Direct link – http://www.lionmusic.com/shop/M/Mattsson.htm

This new wholly instrumental 12-track release takes a fresh approach to the blend of guitar and orchestra for a musical experience as uplifting as seeing the wonder of the northern lights, from which the album gets its title. Whilst the combination of orchestra and guitar may have been done before by amongst others one of Mattsson’s influences Uli Jon Roth; AURORA BOREALIS takes the range of sound and expressions further that what has been heard before and places as much emphasis on each tracks backing as with its guitar work. The result is a highly captivating and listenable experience. Lush in textures and timbres, AURORA BOREALIS comes across at times like a film score; sometimes fast and exotic whilst at others sweet and luxurious. Many moods are covered and all of which see Mattsson deliver impassioned guitar work in his own inimitable style.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Indie singer/songwriter/musician John Taglieri recently spent a week in March touring Europe at the invite of the US Navy. Taglieri performed for troops at Souda Bay Naval Station in Crete, Greece, at Naples Naval Station in Naples, Italy and at Sigonella Naval Base in Catania, Sicily. The shows were at on base pubs, and were high energy interactive performances, letting the troops forget where they were for a night and just have a taste of home brought their way.

One group of sailors in Naples said “We felt like we were back home in our favorite bar on a Friday night just tearing it up with our friends.” And that’s what this trip was all about. Taglieri traveled through Amsterdam, Athens, Chania, Rome, Naples and Catania. performing a total of four shows during his visit, doing meet and greets, and radio and TV interviews on Armed Forces Entertainment along the way.

-Huw Lloyd-Langton’s HARD GRAFT To Be Released June 21

Legendary Hawkwind Guitarist Releases Lloyd Langton Group’s Latest Effort

“Huw emerges from the Hawkwind shadows…”
– Classic Rock Magazine

Huw Lloyd-Langton’s music history spans over 40 years. He has been on the road with various bands since 1967 — all catalogued in his biography. Huw has been associated with Hawkwind so long it is sometimes hard to separate him from that amazing mother ship. But in truth, Huw has always been an independent musical gypsy. When not on the road with Hawkwind he always had his own band the Lloyd Langton Group (LLG). He achieved top 10 chart success in UK in ’80s with two of his solo LLG albums and two singles. When not touring and recording with bands Huw has performed countless solo acoustic concerts.

Huw is recognized in UK as one of the finest ever rock guitarists. To the hundreds of thousands Hawkwind fans worldwide Huw is a legend. When he appears at their concerts with LLG or as a solo acoustic artist he always receives a standing ovation.

Earlier this year Cleopatra Records released a solo classical album worldwide called CLASSICAL TALES. This lovely thoughtful album is a collection of short classical guitar pieces showing yet another side to Huw’s talents.

Despite two serious illnesses since 2001 curtailing his work on the road he has managed to come back fighting to record and perform again. However during this period he continued his work with the Killing Cancer Charity and the mental health charity Restore. For more information, see his official website below.

Huw has been asked to perform his solo acoustic set to open ’70s progressive rock band Nektar’s month tour being planned by Cleopatra Records in USA end of July/August 2011. Huw last toured the US with Widowmaker in 1976 then 1977. Both their albums were in the top 50 national charts.

Physical copies of Huw’s new LLG album HARD GRAFT have only been released in UK receiving great reviews in the press and online media. He has also collected rave reviews on various radio stations. -Graveyard: Album Preview Online, Chart Entry, Support Iron Maiden!

An album preview of Graveyard’s recently released masterpiece HISINGEN BLUES is now available exclusively on AlarmPress.com.

These classic rockers from Gothenburg recently entered the Swedish album chart at No. 1 and trumped pop icon Britney Spears’ new album for the coveted spot.

Graveyard also hit the German Media Control Charts on position #78! Congrats, boys!

To complete a day of good news, the band has also been confirmed as support to Iron Maiden for their gig on July 1, 2011 at the Ullevi Staduim/Gothenburg — together with label mates Sabaton.

Commented Drummer Axel Sjöberg: “If someone would have told us when we were snotty teenagers, that we one day when we all had beards and were grown men, we would open an arena show for Iron Maiden. We’d probably would have believed it. Teenagers are dumb f*cks, as we also were. But if someone would have told us a year ago, we’d probably just have told ’em to f*ck off and go take the piss out of someone else. Don’t know if there’s a moral to this story, but the least we can say is that we are humbled and amazed by the fact that we will open for heavy metal legends Iron Maiden.

“As for the charts. What can you say? It feels good. We’ve always been well recieved by the Germans we’ve played for this far. Now it seems like a bigger part of the German people are embracing our music. We are thankful and honoured and hope to see the same people that put us on the chart on our tour of Germany too!”

-Sister Release Artwork & Track Listing For HATED — First Single And Pre-orders Now Live!

Swedish sleaze and punk influenced metal band Sister have just released the artwork and track listing for the Metal Blade Records debut HATED, due out June 3/6 in Europe. The first single also happens to be the title track of the album, “HATED,” which the band recently released a teaser video for that can be seen here:

Listen to the song at the following location:

The band talks about the first single HATED:

“The first single from the album is the title track ‘HATED.’ It’s a song about when people close to you f*ck things over for you, making your life miserable till the degree that you can’t take it anymore. You get so pissed and frustrated that you start to hate them and want them to hate you too. You want them to despise you and you use that anger as fuel to pull yourself back up. Feed you till you’re up on the top again. We’ve also had a lot of people that have worked against us over the years and this track and album title is kind of a statement as well. A big f*ck you to those people. So it’s both the title track and the anthem of the album.

“It was a song that took form real quickly and pretty much put together in one evening in the rehearsal. It just came natural and it felt right to have a heavier, low tempo song after some time of writing a lot of fast maybe more punk feeling songs. Though, this one still has the punk edge like all our work of course.”

Track listing HATED:

1. Radioactive Misery
2. Body Blow
3. Bullsh*t & Backstabbing
5. Motherf*ckers (Like You)
6. Werewolves On Blackstreet
7. Spit On Me
8. The Unlucky Minority
9. Would You Love A Creature
10. Too Bad For You
11. Drag Me To The Grave

Cover art for HATED was created by Kim Oktavia who is an artist/tattoo artist in Stockholm Sweden and photographer Axel Engström, also from Stockholm Sweden. The band comments: “The cover art for the album are made of us and our close friends Kim Oktavia and Axel Engström. Kim is the band’s tattoo artist pretty much as the whole band gets their tattoos at her studio. She worked with the pictures that we took with Axel and really made them come to life. We did the layout with Axel afterwards and we are stoked over the result. The final cover and booklet blows our minds every time we see it. We have taken photos with Axel a lot times and it felt right to work with people that really understand what we want and are on the same page all the time. So it couldn’t have been better and when everybody sees the result they will see what we mean.”

About the band:

Sister, who hails from Stockholm/Jönkoping Sweden, formed in early 2006 working hard to build up a name as a strong act both live and in the studio. Sister consists of four members — Jamie on vocals, Lestat on guitars and backing vocals, Rikki on bass and backing vocals, and Cari on drums and backing vocals — who combine the sounds of Punk, Glam, Rock, and Metal with an end result sounding something like the bastard child of GG Allin and Guns N’ Roses.

Sister’s Metal Blade debut HATED will be annihilating the world come June 3rd/6th, 2011. Stay tuned to MetalBlade.com and the band’s websites for further details over the coming months.

Cyanide Serenity will re-record their 2011 album CONSUME ME next month with Travis and have released the title track “Consume Me” as a taster of what to expect with him at the helm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frrtG489oTU

The Band Sacred Legacy was formed in the early 2006 with Shahyd as the key person of the band, After the performance in his first band Syn in the early 2004 he started his own guitar solo career. After quitting the band Syn, he started experimenting with many genres of music and got inspired by Thrash, Melodic and Progressive Metal and neo Classic. He also got inspiration from Japanese Anime soundtracks. One main reason Shahyd plays music is because of his daughter Mishka, who also inspires him to keep on going.

In 2006, Shahyd started his own solo career and started working on his first album. He wanted to bring a change to the Maldivian music scene with his music. So he released his first album on 23rd September 2006 which was THE SACRED LEGACY. He launched the album with a successful show featuring Tormenta and Serenity Dies. Thus was the band’s first performance and Shahyd’s first solo album.

The band has released their first album APOCALYPSE on 5th July 2007, on Domination Fest ’07. And also in the same year Sacred Legacy participated in the “Rockstorm Festival: Freak Your Senses.” After so many successful shows the band started working on the second album (UNDYING HEART) and was released in November 2008 which was one of the melodical albums of the year featuring many Maldivians artists.

Due to their great music and stunning performance in the Maldives Breakout Fest 2009, the band has signed with an endorsement contract with one of the leading companies in Maldives, Fomax Maldives Pvt. Ltd. In 2010 the band had their greatest success with burn rock concert and Breakout Festival with has made the band fans base much bigger than before.

The band’s current lineup is Shahyd and Iku on guitars, Azzam on bass, Wadde on drums and Bloody on vocals. With two successful albums released, the male winners of last year’s Breakout Fest is currently working on their third album entitled THE LEGACY BEGINS and Shahyd’s new solo album NOSTALGIA.

-Knife Fight Media And End Of The Light Records Team Up!!!

End of the light records will be using KFM to get the word out on their ongoing releases throughout April of this year. On their agenda this month, we have a brand new two-CD monster album EXISTENCE from Beto Vazquez Infinity, which features an impressive 20-track Odyssey of music that will grab you from the first note. Also this month, EOTL will be re-releasing three albums, armed to the teeth with bonus material, from German gothic darkwaver’s Lacrimosa. SCHATTENSPIEL, LICHTGESTALT, and SEHNSUCHT are essential to the Lacrimosa catalogue and perfectly encapsulate the 20+ year career of these dark German legends.

Beto Vazquez Infinity – EXISTENCE
Out Now

To get things started, EOTL have released Beto Vazquez Infinity’s EXISTENCE, which is the fantastic and eagerly awaited double CD concept album from Argentinean gothic metal mastermind, Beto Vazquez. This album features over 20 guest musicians from all over the global metal scene.

Vazquez’s unique appetite for gothis/symphonic power metal is definitely a far cry from the nationalistic thrash metal that he played while a member of Nepal. Instead, he and his guest musicians opt for gothic power metal that relies heavily on keyboards, female vocalists, and dark arrangements.

April 19th 2011

Originally released in May 2009, this is a must have for every Lacrimosa fan and and a perfect album for new fans to start with. The album SCHATTENSPIEL is a double album with 17 tracks; 13 are unreleased tracks and versions never before heard in Lacrimosa’s 20-year history. The album has, to name a few: two demo songs, two brand new songs, and an unknown extended version of “Copycat” (lyrics with orchestral arrangements and extended). On the cover is a clock, with some similarity to an astrolabe, it shows the 12 albums to date: ANGST, EINSAMKEIT, SATURA, INFERNO, STILLE, LIVE, ELODIA, FASSADE, ECHOS, LICHTGESTALT, LICHTJAHRE and SEHNSUCHT.

April 19th 2011

Recorded in 2005, LICHTGESTALT consists of 9 tracks, including the two different versions of “The Party Is Over.” The album continues in the musical vein of Lacrimosa’s previous albums: dark and beautiful with elements of symphonic metal. Lyrics cover Lacrimosa’s standard themes of love, estrangement and loneliness. Although a notable exception is the last individual track, “Hohelied Der Liebe,” a song written entirely for orchestra and choir with rock elements, and lyrics taken from “St. Paul’s First Epistle To The Corinthians.” “Hohelied” is the Lutheran name for the Old Testament book Song Of Songs. This special re-release features a bonus disc with four bonus tracks.

Lacrimosa – SEHNSUCHT
April 19th 2011

Originally released in may 2009 SEHNSUCHT’s concept of human feelings and emotions do not follow a specific pattern, they are changeable, they obey their own laws and nothing on Earth can explain them. Longing is one of those powerful emotions that enable the individual to develop and to feel — not without reason has Lacrimosa sung of it in various situations in the past.

The intricate way that this album has been put together: in ten compositions, ten facets of longing are put to music. Since these “interpretations of longing” are based on personal experience and perceptions, the first track, “Die Sehnsucht In Mir,” is the perfect opener, it draws the listener, as if under some sort of spell, deeper and deeper into the album’s world. And when the last sounds of the orchestra have faded away at the end of “Die Sehnsucht In Mir,” the listener is quickly drawn in even deeper by the strident call of a drum “Mandira Nabula,” the longing for distant shores and awakening in every sense of the word. This special re-release version includes seven bonus tracks contained on a second disc.

-Freak Show Metal Collective The New Jacobin Club Announce 15th Anniversary Celebration

Freak show metal collective The New Jacobin Club has announced they will be celebrating their 15th Anniversary show on May 14th in their hometown of Saskatoon, SK at The Fez (834B Broadway Ave.). Born out of the Canadian prairies, their shocking theatrics and one of kind metal Broadway spectacle full of disturbing eye-popping visuals, which includes stunts with broken glass, machetes, syringes, staple guns, sledgehammers, torches, and the ever-popular flaming hula hoop has garnered the group a cult following of behemoth proportions.

In addition to their freak show musical, NJC will be premiering re-written and re-orchestrated material from the mid 1990s that will find its way on a limited edition 15th anniversary NJC compilation released later this year.

NJC master The Horde commented on their big 15th:

“We’ll be performing again for the first time since last fall as a full seven piece group. We’ll still be playing a good chunk of our new album THIS TREASON, but we’ve made sure to include songs spanning the 15 years this band’s been on stage. We’ve re-orchestrated and updated a few songs from the ’90s, to incorporate the full force of our 2011 lineup into them and forge some links to the band’s past. We’ll be going into the studio shortly after to record some of these for a 15th anniversary release later this year.

“We’re also excited to announce that Miss Firecrotch Jones, our resident fire handler (of the Angry Teeth freak show), is hoping to return to the stage with us on May 14th. She spent the better part of the winter in hospital with a serious illness, and for a time in isolation and critical condition. She’s been released and has regained a ton of strength and optimism. She’s already helped plan parts of the 2011 stage show, which will throw a few new surprises out at our audiences. We’re just happy she’s recovering so fiercely!”

Since their conception in 1996, NJC has released an EP and four albums their most recent being THIS TREASON, a concept CD/DVD based on the tragic medieval life and death of England’s notorious warlord Sir Hugh Despenser.

NJC has shared the stage with a diverse roster of touring acts such as Nashville Pussy, Groovie Ghoulies, KMFDM, Voltaire and appeared live on stage with Discovery Channel’s freak show reality program “Guinea Pig.”

Show Dates:

April 22, 2011 – Walker’s Nightclub – Saskatoon, SK – Voltaire, The New Jacobin Club (acoustic set), The Chase Walker Band

May 14, 2011 – The Fez – Saskatoon, SK – The New Jacobin Club w/ Black Earth (NJC 15th Anniversary Show) – FB Event – http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=135665426504792

We’ve been wanting to come back ever since, but it’s just so difficult for a European band to work out tour logistics and working visas are really expensive for us… But we finally made it! Looking forward to these three upcoming headlining shows where we’re gonna play full 90-minute sets, and I’m sure the BTBAM tour afterwards will be equally great, though shorter set times for us. The Ocean will be touring in support of their 2010 separately-issued double album: HELIOCENTRIC and ANTHROPOCENTRIC (released in April and November 2010 respectively). This mammoth conceptual effort took almost two years to complete. From a lyrical and artistic point of view, the albums represent a fundamental and philosophical critique of Christianity. Both albums scored rave reviews worldwide, including Album Of The Month in Metal Hammer Germany, Italy and Greece, and a cover feature in the December issue of Metal Hammer UK’s/Subterranea (their extreme metal supplement).

“The Ocean proves willing to go to whatever lengths necessary to keep the listener focused, if not engaged. It’s a strange position to take, but one ultimately of the band’s own design: making thinking-person’s metal but not allowing the listeners to be alone with their thoughts.” — The Examiner

“ANTHROPOCENTRIC demands your full attention, and if you give it, you’ll get plenty of mileage out of this disc… there’s a heap of great music to swallow down, and is it ever worth it.” — Blistering

“ANTHROPOCENTRIC balances out the band’s earlier, Coalesced fury with a forward-thinking progressive sound, moving the band down their creative path with just enough momentum to avoid any awkward missteps. ” — Metal Army

“If you didn’t think HELIOCENTRIC was heavy enough then this would be the album for you and if you still think it is still not heavy enough then you just might be from the Cenozoic Era. No intelligent life anywhere.” — Hellbound

-Steve clued me in to some great info regarding former Lillian Axe members. He and I were talking, and agreed we’ll always hold the POETIC JUSTICE- and PSYCHOSCHIZOPHRENIA-era lineups of that band in high esteem, because everything just seemed to click. Lillian went on hiatus after PSYCHOSCHIZOPHRENIA and rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Jon Ster basically disappeared from sight. Singer Ron Taylor and bassist Darrin DeLatte were there when the band reformed for the LIVE 2002 set but left shortly thereafter, and have been in and out of the (slightly dimmed) spotlight ever since.

Turns out the three of them participated in something called “The Basement Reunion 3 Live” at Trees in Dallas, TX, on April 9. Check out some photos at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=37863&id=100001454449980&l=ddbde6afcc ; buried in there are shots of Taylor, Ster, and DeLatte performing together, acoustically.

Digging further, Steve uncovered some great news — Ster is back and active, in the band Brand New Machine. Their have a ReverbNation site at http://www.reverbnation.com/brandnewmachine with several songs on display: “Lettin’ It Roll” (radio single version), “Living For Another Day,” “Here And Gone Today,” “You Think You Know,” “Something To Remind Me,” “Call Me” (Blondie cover), “No Respect.” There’s also video of Taylor joining Ster’s Brand New Machine on stage for a cover of Lillian’s “Misery Loves Company” at http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1487540927476 .

Finally, Taylor and DeLatte are working together in two bands, a (presumably) originals act called Lowside and a covers band called The Daze. According to http://www.lowside.net/ Lowside will have an album out this year. And there’s some cool stuff over at http://www.thedazeonline.com/ , including a huge list of songs the band does live (featuring AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Cheap Trick, Daughtry, Def Leppard, The Eagles, Foo Fighters, Grand Funk Railroad, Journey, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Metallica, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Rick Springfield, Stone Temple Pilots, Tesla, Van Halen, and White Zombie). There are also samples of “Heading Out To The Highway” (Judas Priest), “Hard To Handle” (The Black Crowes), “What I Got” (Sublime), “In Your Eyes” (Peter Gabriel), “I Don’t Wanna Be” (Gavin DeGraw), and “Harder To Breathe” (Maroon 5). Take a look at http://www.myspace.com/thedazeonline and http://www.facebook.com/pages/THE-DAZE/343825032385 for more on The Daze.

So, ***BIG*** thanks to Steve for finding all this. I’m very, very glad to see and hear these guys are still kickin’ it.

-Remember actress Drea De Matteo? Apparently she’s a big AC/DC fan. Check out some of her tattoo artwork over at http://www.fitsnews.com/2010/01/22/drea-de-matteo-likes-acdc/ . (Use discretion.) Thanks, Bill. 🙂

-In my current playlist: Serenity – DEATH & LEGACY (Napalm Records), John Elefante And Mastedon – REVOLUTION OF MIND (Big3 Records), FireForce – MARCH ON (7Hard), Ross The Boss – HAILSTORM (AFM Records).

Before I dig into the meat of this review, first allow me to apologize to the band and their label for its extreme lateness. I actually received this disc many months ago, but before I even had a chance to give it a spin it became lost and forgotten under the heaps of paper and other flotsam atop my desk, and was only recently re-discovered during my annual Spring cleaning. Imagine my surprise. So hey, sorry, fellas — my bad. North Carolina natives Blatant Disarray are apparently the first “new” band signed to Tribunal Records’ retro-minded Divebomb imprint, which usually specializes in reissues of classic underground albums and long-lost demo tapes from days gone by. The band’s old-school thrash metal sound, similar to the classic pummel of the late ’80s Bay Area bands, justifies their presence on this label’s roster. Blatant Disarray deal out some decent, crunchy stuff ala Metallica’s …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL and early Testament on this baker’s dozen’s worth of tracks, which is fine by me. The album starts off strong with the chunky “Undetermined” and “Down And Out,” and the instrumentation is fine throughout (check out the killer solo in “Eye Fortune” in particular), but unfortunately the album quickly begins to sound “samey” once you’re a few tracks in. Most of the songs are played at the same mid-paced groove, and Mike Schaefer’s vocals, while not bad in and of themselves (he’s got a bit of a Chuck Billy thing goin’ on), have an odd “echo” sounding effect on them (at least to my ears) which makes him sound as if the band is playing in one room while he’s in another room down the hall. I’d be willing to bet that Blatant Disarray are better experienced live than on record — I’m sure that in a packed club with a crowd of drunks beating the crap out of each other in the pit, these songs would crush, but on CD it just seems kind of dry. As with all of the Divebomb/Tribunal releases I’ve reviewed in the past, EVERYONE DIES ALONE is a classy package all around, with full lyrics, liner notes and photos included in the booklet, and the CD even includes three bonus tracks that aren’t on the digital version of the album, as a “reward” for those of us who still buy physical product — a nice touch that other record labels would do well to follow. In the end, EVERYONE DIES ALONE is a decent, though not totally spectacular, debut from a band that shows promise. I’ll definitely keep my eyes/ears out for their next one.

Several years ago, a Beck’s Beer commercial observed that “Germans don’t do comedy.” After several spins of this CD, I’m not entirely sure that they “do” punk rock, either. (Okay, so Deutschland did give us Die Toten Hosen — but what have they done for us lately?) chromatic BLaCK’s debut disc was accompanied by an unintentionally hilarious press release/bio that was severely lacking in background info about the Munich-based band, but it was loaded with pretentious bullsh*t like this: “A hybrid of an analog and a digital world: rock ‘n’ roll penetrated by synthetic effect collage. A central point of the musical content is the critical examination of present social concerning. Don’t read music, listen to it!” — Uhhh, say what? So basically, what we’ve got here is an artsy-fartsy, punky rock ‘n’ roll band that seems to think they’re way more original and meaningful than they really are. Their bio tips such acts as Iggy Pop, Bad Religion, and Black Flag as reference points, to which I can only shrug my shoulders and reply, “Um, OK, if you say so.” I’ll grant that musically, chromatic BLaCK has its stuff together; guitarists Mad Marvellous (yes, really!) and Carl Creepy (!) whip up some decent, bouncy riff action and most of the songs feature those catchy, oh-so-punk shout-along choruses. “Do You Wanna,” the hilariously titled “A**hole In The Mirror” and “Under Pressure” weren’t bad songs at all, but the weak link in this band for me is vocalist Dan R. Mueller, whose voice goes from punk-rock passable, to slightly irritating, to flat-out goofy depending on which song you’re listening to. Witness his out-of-tune caterwauling/yelping on “Alright (Cos Nothing Is Alright)” or his gorilla/ape noises — yes, you read that correctly — in “Human Animal” for just a few examples. Overall, chromatic BLaCK sound like the kind of band that are probably a lot of fun to see live, but aren’t quite as impressive on CD. It’s not a terrible album, but it’s not a terribly interesting one, either. Pass me the Ramones, please.

Former Kansas vocalist and Christian rock pioneer John Elefante has been a fixture in the music business since the early ’80s, though honestly till now I’ve been more familiar with his work as a producer/record label mogul than as a musician. When the Christian hard rock and metal scene exploded in the mid-to-late ’80s, John (along with his brother Dino) produced some of my favorite albums to come out of that era (including Barren Cross’ ATOMIC ARENA and STATE OF CONTROL, X-Sinner’s GET IT, and the lone album by the sadly-overlooked Fear Not, just to name a few), many of which were released on the duo’s own label, Pakaderm Records. John’s Christian AOR project, Mastedon (not to be confused with the current sludge-metal band MastOdon, obviously) also cut two highly regarded albums during that time (1989’s IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE! and 1990’s LOFCAUDIO, both of which are pricey collectibles nowadays) and now he’s revived the name for the first time in over two decades with this new collection, REVOLUTION IN MIND. I’ll be honest, the type of highly polished, classic AOR rock that Mastedon deals in is a bit more “lite” than what I generally listen to, but while spinning REVOLUTION IN MIND I couldn’t help but be impressed by the massive amount of chops and talent that went into its creation. Elefante performs all lead vocals and rhythm guitars on the album, backed by a cast of top flight supporting players that includes his brother Dino and former Kansas bandmate Kerry Livgren. John’s smooth, slightly bluesy voice is easy on the ears, and the guitar work soars throughout. REVOLUTION IN MIND strikes a nice balance between upbeat, radio-friendly (if radio still played stuff like this, of course) “rockers” like the title track and the excellent “Lying,” and big, lush, keyboard-laden power ballads like “Questions.” Lyrically, of course, all the songs maintain a positive outlook, in keeping with the man’s Christian faith. “One Day Down By The Lake (See You Real Soon)” even shows some touches of progressive rock, and “Water Into Wine” is a fairly hard rockin’ track that sounds like it could’ve come off of an old Boston album. “Slay Your Demons” also contains some nice, crunchy guitar work (sure, it’s buried in tons of keyboards and multi-tracked backing vocals, but hey, at least it’s there.) All in all, REVOLUTION IN MIND is refreshingly “retro” and sticks mainly to the vintage ’70s/’80s sound that Elefante’s fans expect from him. If you dug any of the man’s previous work, or if you just have a soft spot for the classic AOR sound, I can’t imagine you’d have any complaints with REVOLUTION IN MIND.

Back in the ’80s, Texan cult metallists Helstar were known for their classy, classically-influenced power/speed metal, characterized by the fluid leadwork of guitarist Andre Corbin and the Dio/Halford hybrid vocal stylin’s of the legendary James Rivera. Since Helstar reunited in the early ’00s (with most of the classic lineup, save for Corbin, intact), they’ve been gradually developing into a nastier, more brutal beast, mainly by turning the “thrash” knob on their Marshalls up to 11, but still keeping some traces of their earlier, more elegant sound. On GLORY OF CHAOS, Helstar’s transformation is complete. This is not your older brother’s Helstar, this is a seriously powerful, pissed-off crunching shred machine! The one-two punch of album opener “Angels Fall To Hell” (which sounds like an outtake from Judas Priest’s PAINKILLER, hopped up on steroids and Red Bull) and “Pandemonium” get things off to an appropriately crippling start. Rivera’s leather-lunged lion’s roar has aged well, and it slices neatly through the wall of razor-wire guitar riffing courtesy of Larry Barragan and Rob Trevino. From there, ferocious tracks like “Bone Crusher,” “Summer Of Hate,” and “Anger” (my fave track on the CD — check out the shredding goodness in the solo portion!) keep the accelerator pedal smashed firmly onto the floor. GLORY OF CHAOS doesn’t let up in the later innings, as “Trinity Of Heresy” hearkens back to Helstar’s classic era (this one sounds like it could’ve come off of NOSFERATU or A DISTANT THUNDER) while “Alma Negra” is the song that’s most likely to throw oldschool fans for a loop. This track is damn near death metal, with 1,000 MPH tempos, absolutely INSANE drumming, and Rivera screaming/snarling/growling for all he’s worth. It’s a bit of a bizarre twist in his vocal arsenal, and I’m glad he doesn’t sing like this for the entire album, but it certainly makes the listener sit up and take notice. Finally, the CD closes with two classic cover tunes as bonus tracks. The rip-roaring Helstar takes on Saxon’s “Heavy Metal Thunder” (nice!) and the Scorpions’ “Animal Magnetism” show that beneath all the newfound brutality, the Helstar boys are still old school metallers at heart. GLORY OF CHAOS is a primo slab of shreddin’ and screamin’ METAL with a capital M-E-T-A-L and it definitely lives up to its title. Gloriously chaotic, indeed!

“Everything’s bigger in Texas,” or so the old saying goes, and judging from the photo of the band on this CD cover, that even applies to hippies. When I hear the word “hippie,” I usually picture a skinny little dude in a tie-dyed shirt, strumming an acoustic guitar, but the members of T.H.C. (get it?) look more like burly, tattooed denim-n-leather bad-asses who’d break you over their knees and use you for a toothpick. ROLLIN’ is the second release from these self-proclaimed “red dirt” metallists, and though it may not be the most startlingly original thing to come down the pike lately, it certainly is one hell of an ass-whoopin’ good time. T.H.C.’s sound is a potent cocktail of COWBOYS FROM HELL era Pantera (particularly in vocalist “Big Dad” Ritch’s very Anselmo-ish delivery) and hard edged Southern Rock (i.e. ZZ Top, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.), played with plenty of crunch and tons of swagger and ‘tude. The result is a disc that would be the perfect soundtrack to a biker rally, a keg party, or a “Road House” style bar brawl. ROLLIN’ immediately rattles your rib cage with the bone-shaking opener “Intervention,” then chugs through 10 more tracks of groove-laden goodness dealing with such time-honored topics as smokin’, drinkin’, fightin’ and lovin’. (A sample of the latter, from the sensitive ode to womanhood “Rollin'”: “I just ask one favor, keep that sweet ass tight! … you may call it sex or f**kin’, but I call it love!” … ahhh, Big Dad, you big romantic lug, you!) My favorite tracks included the walloping “Jesus Freak,” the highly charged “Pissed Off And Mad About It” (this one is guaranteed to make you want to punch somebody) and the closing “Locked And Loaded,” but truthfully the only misfire on the whole disc was the sappy pseudo-ballad “Groupie Girl,” which thankfully was the only slow period in the album’s otherwise steamroller-worthy punch. Aside from that, ROLLIN’ is a good show from these good ole boys. If you dig Black Label Society, Nashville Pussy, Fireball Ministry or other similarly-minded redneck/retro rockers, then you should definitely get rollin’ with T.H.C. (see what I did there?) because it’s some good quality smoke. (And check out the video for “Pissed Off and Mad About It” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjCtHgNEcV0 .)
