-Alice Cooper Calls Rock Hall Induction “A Dream,” Plots NIGHTMARE Sequel

[Note: This is from AliceCooper.com. – Tim]

As he prepares for the “dream” of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday (Mar. 14), Alice Cooper is also delivering a nightmare.

Make that another nightmare. This fall, the shock rocker will be releasing WELCOME 2 MY NIGHTMARE, a sequel to his 1975 concept album WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE — his first “solo” release after the break-up of the original Alice Cooper band. Cooper tells Billboard.com that the project grew out of a desire to work again with original NIGHTMARE producer Bob Ezrin, but on a sequel to another of his albums.

Rock Hall of Fame to Induct Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Tom Waits

“I had an idea to do a part two to (2008’s) ALONG CAME A SPIDER,” Cooper says. “I came to Bob with it, and he listened and goes, ‘Eh. I would be more excited if ALONG CAME A SPIDER was a No. 1 record.’ He wasn’t really into it. Then we started talking about WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE’s 35th anniversary or something like that, and he said, ‘What if Alice had another nightmare?’ All I was trying to do was get Bob to say, ‘Yeah, I want to produce the album,’ so we found a place where both of us really felt comfortable, and that was doing NIGHTMARE 2.”

The album features some other familiar faces from Cooper’s past. The original NIGHTMARE tandem of Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner played on the album, while Vince Gill plays on a track called “Runaway Train.” And surviving Cooper band members Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, and Neal Smith reunited on the track “When Hell Comes Home.” “I was going to go in and say, ‘What I want this thing to have is this live, ’70s sound — but I didn’t have to say that. That’s just the way they play,” Cooper recalls. “They just had that sound you couldn’t go in and try to direct them to get. That’s the normal way they play. I said to Bob, ‘I don’t want it to sound any different than that.'”

NIGHTMARE 2, meanwhile, will have plenty of similarities to its predecessor. “There are certain songs where we let some of the themes from (the original) NIGHTMARE slip in,” Cooper says. “All of a sudden you’ll hear the little piano part from ‘Steven’ or from ‘The Awakening.’ I wanted (the albums) to be married together. I think we even make reference to a couple of characters from the original (album).”

Though planning to play an “Alice hits” set on tour this year, Cooper is planning a full-fledged NIGHTMARE 2 show for 2012. Meanwhile, he’s gearing up for the Alice Cooper band’s Rock Hall induction in New York, where the group — joined by Hunter in place of the late Glen Buxton — will play a three-song set that will include “School’s Out” and two others still being determined.

“We’re actually getting special tuxedos made, special Alice Cooper tuxedos,” Cooper says. “We’ll do the tuxedos, but it’ll definite be our style. It’ll be within our sense of humor.” And, he adds, the induction “is terrific. The whole idea of finally being in that club, and the great thing about it is… it’s your peers that voted you in, the guys that you actually watched on ‘Shindig’ and ‘Hullabaloo’ and all that, and they’re the guys voting on you. That’s a really nice thing.”

-A New Twist On The Music Of Frank Sinatra: Eagle Rock Presents SIN-ATRA

CD Released March 29, 2011

NEW YORK, NY — What would timeless songs like “New York, New York,” “Lady Is A Tramp,” and “Fly Me To The Moon,” sound like cranked out of Marshall stacks, crooned by members of Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Deep Purple, Anthrax, Mr. Big, or Queensrÿche? This can now be experienced on SIN-Atra, a brand new album to be released by Eagle Rock Entertainment on March 29, 2011. [MSRP $13.98]

This all-star project, created from the team that brought you the merry, molten melodies of WE WISH YOU A METAL XMAS, reinvents the classic songs that the great Frank Sinatra performed and, in turn, made famous. These twelve cherished tunes, written by some of the greatest songwriters of all time, are given a radical hard rock/heavy metal treatment, resulting in electrically charged versions of the classics.

Some of the most potent and recognizable voices of rock rework such legendary gems as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Strangers In The Night,” and “That’s Life,” including Dee Snider, Robin Zander, Glenn Hughes, Joey Belladonna, Geoff Tate, Tim “Ripper” Owens, Eric Martin, and dUg Pinnick. Producers Bob Kulick, of Kiss and Meat Loaf fame, and Brett Chassen recreated these songs on guitar and drums, respectively, rounded out by Billy Sheehan (bass) and Doug Katsaros (keyboards, orchestration). Also making an appearance as lead guitarist on “That’s Life” is renowned rock guitarist Richie Kotzen.

These familiar favorites are beloved the world over, but they’ve never been heard like this before! “A fantastic CD,” says executive producer Wendy Dio, “keeping the era alive with today’s musicians.”

-Grammy Award-Winning Former Kansas Singer, John Elefante, Returns With New Album, REVOLUTION OF MIND

The first singer/keyboardist to replace Steve Walsh in Kansas, John Elefante, has just issued a new album from his solo band (credited to John Elefante And Mastedon), titled REVOLUTION OF MIND. And fans of Elefante’s former band are sure to find plenty of satisfaction within the album’s grooves. “I think there are shades of Kansas in just about everything I write,” explains Elefante, who was a member of Kansas from 1981 through 1985. “I’m a tenor singer like Steve Walsh, I like a lot of mood changes in songs, although sometimes I get in the mood to just write a straight pop song from head to toe. Like in all great Kansas records, there are a lot of twists and turns and things you don’t expect musically, that keeps the listener surprised. And at the same time, excited.”

The album also features guitar work from none other than Elefante’s former band mate in Kansas, Kerry Livgren. “These days, another thing that makes it easier for people to work together is you don’t have to be in the same studio and in the same room anymore. I can literally send files to Kerry and hear what he’s doing in real time. The song ‘One Day Down By The Lake,’ I was going to take it off the record, because I thought it was a little too ‘Kansas-y,’ if you will. So I kind of put the song on hold for a while, and when Kerry agreed to play on it and when I heard what he did on it, I went, ‘Wait a minute, now it makes sense.’ So I decided to put it on the record. I probably get more email about that song then any other song on the record.”

As evidenced by such standout tracks as “Questions (It’s About Time),” “The Western World,” and the aforementioned “One Day Down By The Lake (See You Real Soon),” fans of finely crafted melodic rock are surely in for a treat. And Elefante is quick to point out that REVOLUTION OF MIND is a different kind of record than previous Mastedon efforts. “Sonically, it’s different. It’s definitely a different record. Sonically I think it’s more modern. We were quite limited in the old days, we didn’t quite have the technology we have now. We had more capability to do more things. And the one thing that makes it different is the past Mastedon records were a little more like an Alan Parsons Project, where it was a studio thing and we’d have guest singers and guest musicians all over the place. This time, I sang everything — I wanted to sing everything. So that inherently makes it way, way different.”

Elefante also sees a difference between his work with Mastedon compared to his earlier work with Kansas. “Mastedon is my show, so the sky’s the limit — I can do whatever I want. I’m not confined to a brand that’s already in place. Nowadays, things have definitely changed. Instead of going into a big-time Record Plant type studio, which we used to own, I’ll go to a friend’s house who is a killer drummer, and in his basement, he’s got his drums mic’d up to the max, with a ProTools rig. It’s so easy and fun — there isn’t any down time in setting up mics to get drum sounds.”

Elefante plans to support REVOLUTION OF MIND with a set of live dates. “The touring plans are in the works. We’re going to take it as it comes. We’re working on getting some opening dates. I would like to secure an opening slot for a multi-band tour. I think that would be right up my alley. Even though I don’t have the mega hits that Styx had, without tooting my horn, I think the people will be pleasantly surprised when they hear what I have to offer.”

“I’m very proud to have John join our label, Big3,” says the label’s chairman, Bill Edwards. “John and I go way back, and I’ve been a huge fan of his for years. I strongly feel that REVOLUTION OF MIND is a great showcase for his talents, and we’re honored at Big3 to be working with John.”

11. Justify
12. Party Is Over

It has been seven years since the debut album by Shadowman was released (LAND OF THE LIVING, ESM098). The album was warmly received by all who had a penchant for good old British melodic hard rock. As you would expect Shadowman had elements of both Heartland and FM deeply embedded in its grooves, yet it was highly original and was often touted as the best British melodic release of 2004.

Two years later in 2006 and the eagerly awaited follow-up DIFFERENT ANGLES (ESM 127) became an important album for this quartet that also includes both Harry James and Chris Childs of Thunder. The unmistakable guitar trademark sound of Steve Morris and the vocals of Steve Overland will always shine through at a very early stage. Somehow they make their music sound effortless, and as we all very well know Steve Overland has a remarkable vocal range. His vocal range suits the classic melodic rock genre and he has a very bluesy side to his talent. His solo releases BREAKAWAY (ESM170) and DIAMOND DEALER (ESM198) are both beautiful examples of his work.

Shadowman are a band that is all about great rock music who will win you over with charm. Quality rock music is so hard to find these days and it is reassuring to know that it hasn’t lost its way. GHOST IN THE MIRROR (ESM179), the band’s third release in 2008, is an extension of the band’s already established sound, with some clever twists on the way. Three albums under their belt and how can the band hone that sound into something that little bit more special?

Enter WATCHING OVER YOU, a brand new release for 2011. These boys just mature nicely as time passes and new songs like “Renegades,” “Waiting For A Miracle,” and “Are You Ready” will set pulses racing. Once again Tommy Hansen is at the mixing desk, his capabilities need no introduction. This new release is set to be a top ten contender for 2011!

-Sweden Rock Update

Sweden Rock Festival
June 8-11, Solvesborg

Finnish Heavy Metal From Oz At Sweden Rock Festival This Summer!

Oz were formed in Finland in the late ’70s and between the years 1982 and 1991 they released five albums and the cult single “Turn The Cross Upside Down.” The band were praised by the metal community, but their catchy brand of heavy metal never managed to break through to the mainstream consciousness. And then they met that same destiny that so many of the acts that later would come to get up on the stages at Sweden Rock Festival: the band’s lineup fell apart, problems with the record label arose, and the music scene changed, all while the band would, or could, not evolve. During the renaissance of criminally underrated, genuine heavy metal, that we have seen during the last few years Oz have been discovered by new generations of headbangers; giving classics like “Search Lights,” “Black Candles,” and “Turn The Cross Upside Down” a new lease on life. 2011 sees the band return with the single and video for new the song “Dominator” and the quintet (with classic members Ape De Martini, Jay C Blade, and Mark Ruffneck in the lineup) performing their first gigs since their return.

Angel Witch To Sweden Rock!

One of the prime cult bands of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal will finally debut at SRF! Angel Witch, led by singer/guitarist Kevin Heybourne, released their eponymous debut in 1980. The album was a historical landmark in ominous, diabolical and mystical heavy metal. Shortly thereafter, lineup problems led to the break-up of Angel Witch. However, Kevin Heybourne has revived his “baby” on a(n ir)regular basis, to tour and record the occasional new album. In our time, the computer game “Brütal Legend,” featuring Angel Witch’s signature song “Angel Witch,” has contributed to a whole new generation discovering the band. Now these new fans can cheer along with the old ones as songs like “Angel Witch,” “Angel Of Death,” and “Sorcerers” echo over the domains of SRF.

-Exclusive World Premiere Of New Images Of Eden Song “Crosses In The Sand”

Hardrock Haven is premiering a track from the new Images Of Eden release REBUILDING THE RUINS.

“Crosses In The Sand”
by Images of Eden

Lead singer Gordon Tittsworth: “REBUILDING THE RUINS is a concept CD about gaining wisdom/ strength from our past experiences and overcoming traumatic events in our lives until we learn all that we are here on this Earth to learn. Only then is it time to move on…

“‘Crosses In The Sand’ is the first track off of REBUILDING THE RUINS, which picks up exactly where ‘Midnight’s Tide’ left off (the final track on the previous CD, SUNLIGHT OF THE SPIRIT). The song is (in a broad sense) about forgiving yourself for something in your past that haunts you, specifically from a traumatic decision you may have made that inevitably turned into a huge regret. The song is actually written about something specific, but written in a way to open the door of interpretation to others. The ‘crosses’ that I’m referring are actually metaphors for ‘headstones’ covering our past demons and regrets. Being carved ‘in the sand’ represents the fact they they are not permanent markings, and that we can get beyond them, essentially ‘let the waves wash them away’ until they are completely erased from our memory (or conscience). Essentially, we lay our regrets to rest and ‘bury them in the sand.’ This goes back to the quote on the CD tray card of, ‘There are times when war is absolutely necessary in order to achieve peace, especially if this war is internal. Our wounds will never heal if we cannot bleed.'”

HISINGEN BLUES – track-by-track

Ain’t Fit To Live Here
“Classic blues riffs, just harder and on speed, and filtered through 30-40 years of rock history. Lyrics — frustration and the feeling that you hate everybody.”

No Good, Mr. Holden
“Introspective lyrics. A doomy and gentle song at the same time. The song melodies really stand out on this one.”

Hisingen Blues
“A fast hard song about living fast and hard. Not your general song structure. Influenced by many different types of music.”

Uncomfortably Numb
“Jokingly, we’ve called it the power ballad of the album. Lyrics speaks for themselves. A touch of southern rock. Suitable for making love to. Maybe.”

Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)
“A bit more modern if you will, but hard and primitive. Get-drunk-and-fight-it-out vibe. Lyrics about nervous, fake, media/music industry people, and other assh*le musicians that haven’t got anything to bring to the table.”

“Something we’d been jamming on for a long time before we went in to the studio. But it was also very much written in the studio. Don (producer) had a lot of ideas for this one and we had kind help from a couple of friends, also. It’s a nice break with a very different instrumental on the album.”

Ungrateful Are The Dead
“Title explains most of it. It’s not easy being alive. Personal lyrics. A song that we recorded a couple of times but never really were satisfied with until we made this version. Heavy. Maybe the most metal song on the album.”

“Live fast die. A party song with troublesome lyrics. And unusual backing vocals.”

The Siren
“Slow swamp blues with classic rock outbreaks and a really intense outro. Lyrics deals with a nightmare about Roky Erickson.”

-Orphaned Land Give Out FREE Download Of THE NEVER ENDING WAY OF ORWARRIOR For Their Arabian Fans!

Israeli prog/metal band Orphaned Land has just posted the following statement regarding the current events in the Arabian world:

“For years I was educated to hate Arabs and learned how much they hate me and my nation, I was sure both Israelis and Arabs, Jews and Muslims will never live in peace. But then something happened, a small movement — the music that taught me more than any teacher, guru, rabbi, sheikh, was my band’s music Orphaned Land. I know that a football fan of Barcelona will never cheer up for Real Madrid, so how can it be that Arab people will follow my Israeli band? It’s simple — the power of music to bring people together, to break walls, even worst enemies can find a mutual song that they love, and right there — it’s a moment where they can find something in common, a door to a dialogue, to understand that we are all one.

“We consider you, our Arabian fans, to be the most brave metal heads in the world, since you re-defined the word ‘underground’ into a new level.

“We know how hard it is to be a metal head in the middle east and we always want you to know that we as pioneers of the Middle Eastern Metal genre, we are trying our best to be your voice too without getting into politics that divide us for ages. I already know that music can bring people together since I see how many fans we have in the Arab world despite the fact we are Israelis.

“I know that all the wars and bullsh*t they put in our heads are just a stupid lie, I know it because we succeeded to break it, and we are not politicians, we are just a heavy metal band.

“We are banned in your countries, not to mention the fact that we cannot play a concert there, this will never stop the power of music and friendship that exists between us — I see you, our fans as a miracle, you give us the inspiration to continue as much and as strong as we can.

“Lately we have decided to make our latest album legally available in your countries — FOR FREE! We hope that you’ll enjoy it and spread the word.

“Our countries’ flags may have different signs and colours but deep in our hearts shines the same flag — the flag of hope, friendship, brotherhood. Don’t you ever forget it — it is our duty as disciples of the sacred oath.

“With love, peace, Salam & Shalom,
“Orphaned Land.”

You can download the entire album for FREE at the following website.

If you are lucky to live in a country where you can simply go out to a record store and buy whatever you want, grab your copy of THE NEVER ENDING WAY OF ORWARRIOR and support this fabulous band as they still live up to their message!

Even media outside the metal community meanwhile realizes the importance and relevance of Orphaned Land and The World (US) recently talked to Kobi Farhi. You can listen to the radio feature and read the article here:

-One-Eyed Doll’s Inspiring New Track “Water Song” Released To Help The Japan Earthquake And Tsunami Relief Effort

After the devastating 8.9 earthquake and tsunami that shook the Northern Coast of Japan on March 11, 2011, hard rock duo One-Eyed Doll (OED) is helping those in dire need of the recent tragic events through the power of music. In support of helping the people of Japan, lead vocalist and guitarist Kimberly Freeman posted a new single “Water Song,” for download at http://music.oneeyeddoll.com/track/water-song-tsunami-benefit outreaching to OED’s devoted fans and newcomers to “name your own price.” OED will give 100% of the download proceeds to the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Effort.

“Water Song” was initially planned to be released on Freeman’s upcoming solo project, which is currently being produced by the other half of OED and drummer for the duo, Jason “Junior” Sewell. She wrote the track on stormy summer day in Texas, after massive triple thunderstorms hit the area on June 2, 2010, ironically the date of Freeman’s birthday. The thunderstorms helped Freeman to express some her most intimate and inspiring lyrics that touch on finding inner strength.

“I didn’t write this song about the recent disaster and it wasn’t meant to be released until the next ‘Kimberly Freeman’ album later this year,” the singer explained “… I just thought now would be a good time to release it with positive intentions and the possibility of raising some help and awareness for our Japanese fans.”

In mainstream news, Freeman was recently shot by renowned photographer Matthew Rainwaters for her inside cover and feature for Revolver’s January/February 2011 issue, which named her one of the “Hottest Chicks In Hard Rock.” The outtake photos by Rainwaters skyrocketed the magazine’s website traffic since it viral release in December 2010. Freeman will also be featured in Guitar Player Magazine’s April 2011 issue due to her talents as a female in hard rock and her electric guitar playing ability. That same talent, along with Sewell’s strong and creative production skills, caught the attention of legendary producer Sylvia Massy (Tool, System Of A Down, Prince). Massy is now working with the band to produce the next OED project. The new OED album is slated for late 2011.

In other news, OED is taking on their home turf of Austin, Texas this week for 2011 South By South West(SXSW).

-Of Wrath And Ruin Releases Debut CD

BLACKWOOD, NJ — Apollyon Records is pleased to announce the release of the debut album from Of Wrath And Ruin. CONQUERING OBLIVION is now available at iTunes, Amazon, and other retail outlets. The band has recently performed two shows and is preparing for a larger tour.

Of Wrath And Ruin traces its roots back to 2004, and after several incarnations founders Pat Brose and Joe Brannigan have finally found the right people to meet the needs of the bands unique progressive metal style. During one stint as The Heliand, Pat and Joe met vocalist Laura Tyburski. A deep musical chemistry has evolved between the three as they have worked together over the last several years. The combination of Pat’s death metal vocal style and Laura’s clean vocals is one of the characteristics that make OfWAR special. They feel bands such as Dream Theater, Opeth, Nevermore, Dark Tranquility, Children Of Bodom, and Nightwish have heavily influenced their music.

Pat Brose has been the driving force behind the music, writing and recording almost all of the music single-handedly. In early 2009 producer Steve Childs offered to work with Pat on a full-length album. They had known each other for almost a decade and, having heard many of Pat’s home recordings, Steve was confident that the album would be successful. Pat began tracking all the guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and death metal vocals. Shortly after the recording began, Joe began learning all the rhythm guitar parts from the album. In early 2010, drummer Ryan Welikonich joined the band. At this time, the group decided to include more clean vocals, so they brought Laura into the studio as the new singer.

Steve introduced Of Wrath And Ruin to Apollyon Records in 2010 and the band was quickly signed. OfWAR released their debut album CONQUERING OBLIVION in early 2011. It has only nine tracks, but as is common with progressive metal, each song is its own epic journey. The ultimate result is, as Ryan says, “A one hour long molten slab of metal.”

Here’s what critics are saying about BLACK RIVERS FLOW:

“Lazarus A.D.’s BLACK RIVERS FLOW is meticulously perfect. The guitar solos are reminiscent of Slayer, the riffs remind me of Coroner, Atheist, and Testament, and the precision of the guitar work brings to mind Metallica and Megadeth.” Altsounds.com

“This band is in no danger of suffering from a sophomore slump (the title track is especially wicked).” MetalSucks.net

“The album wraps up with the seven-minute ‘Eternal Vengeance,’ which builds from a mellow vocal introduction reminiscent of James Hetfield’s (Metallica) somber moments to the crunching heaviness that defines the rest of the album. It too is a strong and, in a different way, expansive cut. Lazarus A.D. have taken a big step forward with BLACK RIVERS FLOW and kept the killer instinct intact. No flash in the pan, this is a band to watch in 2011 and beyond.” Blabbermouth.net

-Portrait Reveals Album Art And Track Listing For CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE! Post First Two Songs Online!

Swedish Heavy Metallers Portrait have revealed the track listing and album art for their sensational new album CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE!

CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE is an album transcending the most glorious moments of ’80s Heavy Metal. Portrait are turning something great into something greater — you can only describe this album as the wet dream of any fan of Heavy Metal. CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE is Metal in its purest form — relentless, energy-driven, complex, dark, catchy and. HEAVY!

Comments Portrait guitarist Richard Lagergren: “The eight songs on CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE constitutes Portrait’s by far darkest, hardest, and most intense material to date. This album is an outburst of a long time of targeted hard work, an intense creative process and pure black magic. To Hell and back and to Hell again! To achieve the goals we had for this album, working with someone not being the obvious choice for our type of music proved to be just the right (or if you will, wrong) decision. CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE sounds like Portrait was always meant to. It is hate, and it is love. And in many ways, it is our true debut album.”

Portrait guitarist Christian Lindell about the recordings: “Outside the walls danced the plague that is man its one-way dance, so blindly strutting about the path that leads to its ever-hungry end. Inside the fires burned and the cauldron bubbled, enhancing forever the fierce opus that is CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE. A beastly support was present in the Necromorbus Studio, pointing us in the right directions all the way through those dark days in November. The songs could not have materialized in a more satisfying way than they have on this album. Prepare to get burnt to ash by its fires, swallowed by its darkness, and forever trapped in its boundless abyss, in anguish trying to convince yourself that what you’ve gone through was only music. If this one doesn’t kill you, you’re already dead!”

1. Beast Of Fire
2. Infinite Descension
3. The Wilderness Beyond
4. Bloodbath
5. Darkness Forever
6. The Nightcomers
7. The Passion
8. Der Todesking

Portrait is:
Per Karlsson – vocals
Richard Lagergren – guitars
Christian Lindell – guitars
Joel Pälvärinne – bass
Anders Persson – drums

The relentless, Swedish heavy metal monster known as Portrait spawned in the year 2006 with the intention to bring back the dark energy that once was the cornerstone in many a classic metal release, but was long gone, raped by the hippie-infested power metal and retro- as well as modern “thrash” metal outfits of the day, whose entire existence the band spat whole-heartedly upon, hungry to take back the flag of hate, and then exterminate the entire world.

Listen to the brand new songs “Bloodbath” and “Darkness Forever” at http://www.portraitband.se/ .

CRIMEN LAESAE MAJESTATIS DIVINAE will be released on CD and vinyl May 6/9 via Metal Blade Records in Europe, May 10 in North America.

We really didn’t expect anything like that at all, especially so early in our career, hell we haven’t even released our debut album yet. Being nominated alongside bands such as The Dammed Things is pretty cool as well… that’s Scott Ian, man! Just to be nominated is an award in itself, anything else will be a bonus. A massive thanks must go out to everyone who has voted for us so far.”

-Across Tundras: Album Details Unveiled; American Tour Confirmed

As previously announced, Across Tundras have signed with Neurot Recordings for the release of their newest full-length opus, and we now proudly unveil details on this beautiful display of purely organic atmospheric rock.

The sprawling, seven-song album, entitled SAGE, is now officially confirmed for North American release on May 17th, 2011. Neurot label owner, Neurosis’ Steve Von Till, exposes a bit of insight on the new album: “Lurking somewhere between unearthed, aged, haunted Americana and the psychedelic sludge scraped from the edges of the cosmos, Across Tundras’ new artifact SAGE explores new territory, that while at once, rooted in history, and soaked firmly in the rich soil they cultivate, rises above the arcane to the sound of what will become.” Check out the cover art for SAGE and more at http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=2293 .

SAGE Track Listing:
1. In The Name Of River Grand
2. Hijo De Desierto
3. Buried Arrows
4. The Book Of Truth
5. Tchulu Junction
6. Mean Season Movin’ On
7. Shunka Sapa

On this album, more than ever before, Across Tundras manage to perfectly capture their heritage through a perfect amalgam of haunting doom tinged Americana and echoes of traditional country blues all bound by heavy waves of psychedelic sludge. Their organic sound is well-honed, marking SAGE as their most fully realized album to date with all their influences and elements flowing cohesively with one another. A utterly original album, broadening the horizons for metal music, taking it into unknown territories and yet still with a warm familiarity we have grown to love about Across Tundras’ music over the years. Echoing our sentiments entirely, Tanner from the band remarked “This is by far the best AT album we’ve done.”

Additionally, Across Tundras have also just confirmed a plethora of American touring activities for the coming weeks as they begin to unveil the material on SAGE to the public. With shows already booked throughout March, April, May and June — and with many more in the planning stages to be announced shortly — this is just the beginning of an extensively active year for the band.

Unique South African Industrial-Metal Band

The female-fronted Industrial-Metal band Terminatryx (pronounced: “terminaytrix”) is a rare breed of music in South Africa. Established in 2002 with one of its founding members from the Godfathers of S.A. Metal, V.O.D — Voice Of Destruction, they’ve released their self-titled album locally via indie company ENT, as well as a DVD featuring music videos, a short film, and live clips, plus the full classic vampire film “Nosferatu” with their brand new soundtrack. The band has played across South Africa and at Popkomm, Berlin (2006), and supported several European acts like Diary Of Dreams and VNV Nation. (Terminatryx was on the short list to support Rammstein on their recent SA tour, but for technical reasons they performed solo.)

Band Biography – http://www.terminatryx.com/TXbiog.htm

February Terminatryx launched its latest exciting music video, the Horror-laced “Virus” — see the clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDiRabFQXvg (More info in the “Virus” press release below this message.) Unique South African Horror-Laced Music Video / Short Film Combo

“Virus,” the Horror-inspired music video of Cape Town based female-fronted Industrial-Metal band Terminatryx, is in fact a three-pronged project breaking South African boundaries and expectations. Originally in October 2009 a werewolf transformation promo clip was produced by Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg for their South African HorrorFest Film Festival (est. 2005). It was directed by Paul (also a Fangoria contributing writer), stars Sonja (who is the HorrorFest poster girl) and features makeup FX by Clinton Smith.

A woman finds an unmarked envelope on her doorstep containing an old Betamax tape. She digs an old player from her cupboard and views it. A full moon appears on screen — and things get hairy(!)

See the uncensored Terminatryx “Virus” music video here:

Watch the original HorrorFest trailer at:

Catch a teaser of the expanded movie & music video here:

The outcome of this promo clip was very well received, and even “American Werewolf In London” director John Landis was impressed when it was passed on to him. With a very tight shoot of a single night for the original promo clip, some of the prosthetics by world class makeup FX artist Clinton Smith (from Cosmesis) could not be utilized. (Smith has done exceptional work for movies like “The Last House On The Left” remake, “Laconia,” and “Death Race 2”). So, mid-2010 they loaded up and head down the Cape Town east coast to Betty’s Bay, to expand upon this exciting clip. This was transformed into the impacting “Virus” music video for Paul and Sonja’s band Terminatryx, as well as an even more involved short film, “Marked” (featuring soon at: http://www.YouTube.com/FlamedropProductions ).

The bulk of this expanded shoot was done over a single weekend with very little sleep in the middle of the Cape Town winter (with a few pick-up shots in July and October). A grueling shoot had Sonja running around the woods in the cold night, and naked in a freezing mountain pool. The movie was shot on the Canon 5D MKII camera by Marnus Tredoux — camera supplied by Visual Impact / Magus, chosen for its superior quality and user friendly handling — http://www.visuals.tv .

This multi-purpose project is unlike any South African music video, short film, or promo clip, and was produced by Paul and Sonja’s Flamedrop Productions, in cooperation with Cosmesis Advanced Prosthetic Studio, Visual Impact / Magus, Magic Hour Productions, Furry Wood Productions, and Silver Bullet Lighting. Both Terminatryx “Virus” and “Marked” made their debut at the 2010 South African HorrorFest Film Festival over Halloween season, and got the Audience Choice Award, plus Best Special Makeup FX.

Paul and Sonja are currently gearing up for another short film and music video, as well as writing a feature film screenplay. Another audio-visual project they spearhead is The Makabra Ensemble, creating new soundtracks for silent classics silent movies and performing it live to the screen.

-Mediaskare Launches New Subsidiary Label Rite Of Passage Records

Rite Of Passage Records, a new subsidiary of Mediaskare Records, has announced its first three signings: Creations, Float Face Down, and Stand Your Ground. All three will have albums in stores this year through the label.

“Rite Of Passage Records is the perfect model for an independent label like Mediaskare to really develop and nurture up and coming acts that we feel have a long and bright future without exposing them to too much too soon,” commented Mediaskare Records owner Baron Bodnar. “A big problem in the current state of music is that instead of really taking the time to develop bands, labels are throwing them out to the wolves right away and their longevity is dramatically cut short,” he added.

Australian hardcore band Creations will be the first artist to release an album through Rite Of Passage, with their debut THE GOSPEL set to be released this summer. Meanwhile, New Jersey’s Float Face Down and Tennessee’s Stand Your Ground are currently in the studio recording their album, which will see release later this year.

-Clamfight Announce Recording Plans; Album To See Release Via The Maple Forum

Philadelphia-area doom quartet Clamfight have signed with The Maple Forum for the release of their upcoming full-length album, which the band are set to begin recording next month.

A crew of childhood friends from the South Jersey/Philadelphia area who have been jamming together in various bands since 1997, Clamfight lay down an incredibly solid assault of doom/sludge with enough rock and roll and thrash influence to keep things upbeat, resulting in some of the most bruising grooves in the tri-state area.

After Clamfight’s debut album, VOLUME I, received endless live coverage and praise throughout all of last year on major heavy rock portal The Obelisk — even earning the site’s #7 spot on the site’s 2010 year-end list — site taskmaster JJ Koczan simply turned around and offered to release the band’s next album via The Maple Forum, the official record label of The Obelisk. This April, Clamfight will be returning to Gradwell House Studios, where they birthed the massive VOLUME I.

Clamfight have shared the stage regionally alongside Pale Divine, Bitchslicer, Hellblock Six, Rukut, A Day Of Pigs, and countless more, as well as national touring acts including Solace, Jucifer, and Iron Man. Their bourbon-soaked rock-bred-sludge is as soulful as it is thunderous, the kind of thing fans of Grand Magus, Beaten Back To Pure, and Crowbar will flock to like free beer.

Stay tuned for more live updates as Clamfight lay down their sophomore release and take their thunder to the road throughout 2011. In the meantime you can stream the band’s entire VOLUME I album for free at their Bandcamp page:

Also check the band out live in Jersey this Saturday night to witness the band’s on-stage aggression:

Clamfight live:

3/19/2011 Brighton Bar – Long Branch, NJ w/ Negative Sky

“I knew when I first heard it that VOLUME I was going to be my favorite unsigned release of 2010, and it absolutely was. Lethal. F*cking. Groove.” – The Obelisk

“…more than enough groove to break down walls.” – Doommantia

-Congrats to Alice Cooper and his band for getting inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Now, as for his upcoming sequel to the decades-old WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE, is this a desperate cash-in or a truly artistic decision? It sounds cool to me, especially since it will apparently hearken back to the original with reprises of musical themes, etc. It’s just odd to do a sequel this many years on, but at least it feels more “right” than, say, Helloween’s 2005 KEEPER OF THE SEVEN KEYS – THE LEGACY, which to me just seemed like they slapped the word “Keeper” on the title to rope in fans of the legendary one-two punch from the ’80s.

-The announcement of NWOBHMers Tokyo Blade’s new album got me going. I have a vinyl copy of 1984’s NIGHT OF THE BLADE and 1989’s NO REMORSE on CD, but I know very little about the band. I looked ’em up on Wikipedia and was surprised to see that not only have they had about 50 guys (okay, *slight* exaggeration…) in and out of the band, but some of the folks have ties to the bands Skin and Johnny Crash. No, this is not exactly front-page news but I always like “discovering” such links between bands.

-Amon Amarth has *ten* configurations of SURTUR RISING for their fans to choose from. Wow. C’mon, is that necessary? I just can’t believe someone beat Kiss to this idea. 🙂 But seriously, although I am not a fan of this band I have to give props — the boxed set and artwork look awesome. Dig around online for some pictures and you’ll see what I mean. If I was 14 I would HAVE to own this.

-Yesterday I saw car with the license plate “Q RYCHE,” and now my boss just walked by whistling Europe’s “The Final Countdown.” The incidents were not connected in any way, but still I felt I must report them.

-So yeah, that Bailey Brothers press release had me scratching my head. I mean, sure, they have quite a resume but I don’t think I’d ever heard of them. How did I miss all that?

-That Unisonic news is huge! I cannot wait to hear more from these guys. Oops, I think I just drooled…

-Anyone care to set me up with a photo pass for the “Hottest Chicks In Metal” Tour? 🙂

-That whole Orphaned Land thing is pretty cool.

-In my current playlist: Bill Leverty – FIRE (SINGLE) (indie), Praying Mantis – METALMORPHOSIS (indie), Tankard – VOL(L)UME 14 (AFM Records), Visions Of Atlantis – DELTA (Napalm Records).

Album number three from Images Of Eden is a brooding, intense chunk of prog metal played in traditional fashion with a bit of contemporary elements aimed at the engaged and dedicated fan of the style. REBUILDING THE RUINS features material both energetic and contemplative, highlights including the driving opener “Crosses In The Sand,” potent rocker “Human Angels,” edgy “My Stigmata,” and ambitious closer “Sunlight Of The Spirit Part IV.” Well to the fore on the album is vocalist and mastermind Gordon Tittsworth, who delivers spiritually provocative lyrics with strong dynamics and emotion, characteristic of masters such as Geoff Tate and Lance King. The musicianship of guitarist Dennis Mullin, keyboardist L. Dean Harris, and drummer Chris Lucci is solid without being overbearing, and the production fits the ruminative nature of the music. REBUILDING THE RUINS is not a quick and easy experience, as its rather lengthy duration will require some time and attention to fully absorb the subtleties, but there is plenty here for the discerning listener to explore, especially those with an ear for some of the more adventurous aspects of Fates Warning, Queensryche and Pyramaze.
