-Def Leppard Announce Live Album MIRRORBALL

[Note: This is from DefLeppard.com. – Tim]

Def Leppard, Great Britain’s premier arena rock band, have announced the release of their first-ever live album, MIRRORBALL, out this summer. The live album was recorded across the world over the course of many of the band’s sold-out dates. MIRRORBALL will feature all of the classic songs that have made Def Leppard one of the most respected and beloved power rock bands in the world. The release captures the group’s legendary concert experience at its thunderous best, bringing together live versions of classic Leppard hits such as “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Rock Of Ages,” “Foolin’,” “Hysteria,” “Photograph,” and an incredible rendition of “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak.”

With their creative juices at full flow, the band has also added three new studio tracks: “Undefeated,” “It’s All About Believin’,” and “Kings Of The World,” that are undeniably Def Leppard. MIRRORBALL follows the band’s 2008 studio release, SONGS FROM THE SPARKLE LOUNGE, which debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, marking the group’s highest chart position since 1992’s ADRENALIZE.

In addition to the album, Chronicle Books will be releasing “Def Leppard: The Definitive Visual History,” featuring photos of the band by legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin. His fully authorized visual history of the band follows them from the new wave of British heavy metal to their massive PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA albums to the sustained power of their records and tours today. The book will be available this June.

-Thin Lizzy Set To Rock The USA With Tour Dates And “Rockline” Appearance

Due to a multitude of classic tunes (“The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak,” “Waiting For An Alibi,” etc.) and albums (JAILBREAK, LIVE AND DANGEROUS, BLACK ROSE, etc.), Thin Lizzy is undoubtedly one of rock’s all-time great bands. And with arguably the band’s strongest lineup since the days that the late/great Phil Lynott served as their front man, Thin Lizzy are set to take the USA by storm with upcoming tour dates in late March and early April.

The trek will include stops in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Toronto, Detroit, and Chicago, and will also include a live appearance on the popular radio show, “Rockline,” on March 23rd, which will run from 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. EST. Thin Lizzy’s current lineup includes such “Lynott era” Lizzy veterans as Scott Gorham (guitar), Brian Downey (drums), and Darren Wharton (keyboards), as well as singer/guitarist Ricky Warwick, bassist Marco Mendoza, and Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell.

Thin Lizzy became one of rock’s top bands during the 1970s, on the strength of Lynott’s poetic yet tough lyrics, and the highly influential dual guitar attack of Gorham and whichever second guitarist he was paired up with at the time (Brian Robertson, the late Gary Moore, Snowy White, or John Sykes). Lizzy split up in 1983, before Lynott passed away in 1986. But with Lizzy being either consistently name checked as an influence or having their songs covered by other bands, the group’s stature has remained at the forefront of rock over the years. And now, US fans will be able to experience the Lizzy legend once more on the concert stage.

-Mr. Big At The Hollywood House Of Blues: Saturday, April 2nd

Their First US Show By The Original Band In 15 Years!

New Release WHAT IF… Out Now!

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Mr. Big will once again unleash their brand of brutal fury to the masses in Hollywood, Saturday April 2nd at the House Of Blues with their very first US show in 15 years! “Man, it’s been a long time,” states guitarist Paul Gilbert. I can’t wait to play in L.A… actually, I can’t wait to play our first show in AMERICA in about 15 years. It’s gonna be huge!”

WHAT IF… is Mr. Big’s first all-original album since the reunion of the four original members, Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan, and Pat Torpey back in early 2009. Sixteen years after the release of HEY MAN, the new recording is set to bring back Mr. Big on the height of the current Hard Rock scene.

Guitarist Paul Gilbert said: “This is the first Mr. Big album I have been a part of, since 14 years and it was done in a snap. It was fun and we had really a good time in making this one.” Continues Billy Sheehan “It’s so great to be back with Paul, Eric, and Pat, too. We wrote this record like we did in the old days for the first two records. Jamming together in the same room to write songs.” Pat Torpey adds, “Some of the recording process is different now from what we were used to in the old times. But I think this record really managed to capture the performances of the band, not of the individual musicians.”

Their hits included “To Be With You” (Billboard Hot 100 number one single in 15 countries for weeks, in 1991, propelling the band the band to huge international success and record sales in the multi-millions), “Wild World,” “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” “Just Take My Heart,” and a host of heavy metal songs that were played mostly during their live performances: “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy,” “Addicted To That Rush,” “Colorado Bulldog,” and “Take Cover.”

WHAT IF… is released in a special edition CD + DVD in digipak, regular CD, vinyl and digital download and in a limited edition luxury box including the CD, DVD, LP and exclusive memorabilia.

WHAT IF… track listing includes: Undertow; American Beauty; Stranger In My Life; Nobody Takes The Blame; Still Ain’t Enough For Me; Once Upon A Time; As Far As I Can See; All The Way Up; I Won’t Get In My Way; Around The World; I Get The Feeling; Unforgiven (exclusive bonus track for Europe / North America — not on vinyl edition).

The DVD will include the video clips of “Undertow” and “All The Way Up” plus a documentary “Making Of” the album including interviews and exclusive behind the scenes features of the four members.

-Warriors Of Metal Festival Open Air

The Warriors Of Metal Inc. Non-Profit Organization is proud to announce the final four bands of this year’s Warriors Of Metal Fest IV Open Air to take palce at the Frontier Ranch in Pataskala, Ohio on June 17th and 18th.

Benedictum from San Diego, California, signed to Frontiers Records, will grace our humble stage this year to spice up an already varied Fest roster even further. Fronted by the energetically powerful vocalist Veronica Freeman and supported by the talents of world class musicians, this explosive band having already conquered some of the biggest Metal Festival stages in Europe are now concentrating to carve their name into the steel fandom of their native country to redefine what a world class female fronted US Metal band is supposed to sound like. Just yesterday, the US Metal scene witnessed the release of Benedictum’s third full-length studio album called DOMINION to rave reviews from around the world and we are very excited to add this internationally recognized Metal band to our Fest’s lineup in 2011.

Spellcaster from Portland, Oregon (Signed to Heavy Artillery Records) came to the organizers’ attention through an interview with Omar Reyna’s “Hit List 101” program and having been quite impressed with their brand of Power Speed Metal with clear vocals, they were invited to this year’s Fest without delay and with our good fortune, not only did they graciously accept our invitation but they also agreed to book a national tour together with our international guests, Split Heaven from Mexico. Spellcaster has been in the process of recording for their full-length debut album and we hope it can be ready by the Fest time.

Split Heaven from Querétaro, Mexico, signed to Germany’s Pure Steel Records was the first Mexican band to have ever played at Wacken Open Air at the 20th anniversary of that hallowed festival after winning the “Mexico Metal Battle” of 2009. Tomas Roitman, drummer and band manager let the Warriors Of metal Fest Open Air organizers know that “whether we are playing to 5,000 Metalheads at Wacken, Germany or 500 fans anywhere else, we will deliver our brand of Power Speed Metal with the same on-stage energy & intensity so your audience better prepare themselves for a headbanging good time because we won’t be holding anything back!” Split Heaven is currently awaiting the release of their third full-length studio album entitled STREET LAW through Pure Steel Records.

Machinage from Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil was recommended to the organizers by the owner of Metal Messiah Radio, Lord Crusan who had recognized the explosive potential of this young and hungry Thrash Metal band. Machinage has independently released their debut album in 2009, entitled IT MAKES US HATE produced by Tim Laud (Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy) and has shared the stage with some of the best known bands in Brazil such as Sepultura and Angra and the US (Tim “Ripper” Owens and Overkill). They are currently in the process of putting a Brazilian / US tour together to support their release.

Thanks to Machinage and Split Heaven, Warriors Of Metal Fest IV Open Air is sponsored by US Music Corp and will utilize their top of the line Randall Amplifiers on stage during the Festival. We are very thankful for this opportunity and aim to keep this relationship going through the years to come.

FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY, the “Super Advanced Discount Tickets” will be $25 per adult + FREE camping, until the end of this week. After that, tickets will be $30+. We also have young adult tickets (12-16) for just $10. And kids 11 and under are FREE!!!

-Sweden Rock Festival Update

June 8-11, Solvesborg

Steelheart To Sweden Rock!

Do you recall the wonder singer who dubbed Mark Wahlberg’s vocal parts in the movie “Rock Star” (2001)? That’s right — Miljenko Matijevic, the Croatian-American main man of Steelheart from Connecticut. The band was acclaimed as one of the finest in early ’90s hair metal. The two first albums, STEELHEART (1990) and TANGLED IN REINS (1992), overflow with classics like “Angel Eyes,” “Steelheart,” and the killer ballad “She’s Gone.” Steelheart dissolved in 1992 after Miljenko getting severely injured on stage by a falling lighting rig. An attempted comeback in 1996 proved abortive, but 10 years later Miljenko revived Steelheart for real and released the Led Zeppelin-influenced GOOD 2B ALIVE in 2008. Now the band makes their Swedish debut — beware of glass-shattering high notes when Miljenko opens his mouth!

Queensryche To Sweden Rock!

According to many, they are the seminal pioneers of prog metal. Seattle’s Queensryche got a minor break even with their first eponymous EP, and have since released 11 full-length album, with a 12th one in the way. The band always distinguished themselves with their both intricate and accessible tunes, clever lyrics, and Geoff Tate’s impressive vocal performances. Many still associate Queensryche primarily with such albums as OPERATION: MINDCRIME (1988) and EMPIRE (1990), but rather than copying their own recipe for success the band has continued to evolve, never releasing the same record twice. This is one reason for the devotion that characterizes Queensryche fans. Another one is the band’s perennial qualities as a live act, making them eternal favorites not least with the SRF crowd.

Black Label Society To Sweden Rock!

Heavy metal with a Southern groove. That was the concept when former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde formed Black Label Society in 1998, and that’s how it still looks today. To date the massive — in both senses of the word — guitar hero/front man and cohorts have released eight studio albums, including such successes as MAFIA (2005) and last year’s ORDER OF THE BLACK. As we all know, American and European metalheads have different preferences, but in this case both sides agree: Black Label Society is one of the finest American metal bands today. Even if Zakk himself has given up beer, he can still count on countless beer drinkers to give a warm reception to him, his trusted associates Nick Catanese (guitar) and John DeServio (bass), and newly appointed drummer Johnny Kelly (ex-Type O Negative).

Did we mention that the band will play just before Ozzy Osbourne on June 11th?

-Enbound Signs With Inner Wound Recordings

Inner Wound Recordings are proud to announce the signing of the Swedish melodic power metal band Enbound to the label. Their debut album AND SHE SAYS GOLD will be released in Europe on April 29th and a release date for Japan will be announced shortly.

Enbound features vocalist Lee Hunter (Lars Safsund) also known for his work with the band Work Of Art, as well as performing in musicals like “Jesus Christ Superstar,” in the TV program “Singing Bee” on Swedish television, and performing with Biondo in the Rumanian Eurovision song contest 2008.

AND SHE SAYS GOLD was mastered by Bjorn Engelmann (Rammstein, Primal Fear, Sonata Arctica) at Cutting Room and the artwork was created by Thomas Ewerhard (Avantasia, Masterplan, Edguy).

AND SHE SAYS GOLD is a masterpiece of melodic power metal, and definitely one of the best debut albums to come out during the last ten years in the scene. The powerful arrangements that characterize Enbound, together with the smooth and emotional vocals by Lee Hunter, Enbound has created something special. Fans of melodic metal and hard rock will for sure love the sound of Enbound, and the future of the band is really exciting! Do not miss out on this new Swedish melodic metal sensation!

Enbound was formed in 2006 by Mike Cameron Force, who previously had played with bands like Zonata and Poem, and also worked as a producer for Axenstar and Draconian among others. The intention was to create something special with Enbound, and not just be a normal rock/metal band.

Some years were spent working on material, finding the right direction for Enbound, and also the right members. The experienced bass player Swede was added to the lineup, as well as the extremely talented (then 17, now 20) year old guitar virtuoso Marvin Flowberg. And finally in 2009 the band found their singer in Lee Hunter (Lars Säfsund) who is most famous for his work in the band Work Of Art as well as performing in musicals like “Jesus Christ Superstar,” in the TV program “Singing Bee” on Swedish television, and performing with Biondo in the Rumanian Eurovision song contest 2008.

With Lee Hunter Enbound found their last missing link, and now they were ready to take on the world. In 2009 the recording of the Enbound debut album AND SHE SAYS GOLD was started, and a deal was inked with the Swedish label Inner Wound Recordings.

Björn Engelmann (Rammstein, Primal Fear, Sonata Arctica) was chosen to master the album, and did it with pure perfection. Thomas Ewerhard (Avantasia, Edguy, Masterplan) created the artwork for the album, and produced something of the highest class as usual. An exciting guest on the album is singer LaGaylia Frazier (known from Swedish television, the Eurovision song contest, and much more) who performs a fantastic duet with Lee Hunter on the track “Frozen To Be.”

Enbound worked for years at creation something special, and the gold theme that is found in the entire production binds everything together in a perfect way.

Pure gold!

• An intro to the album

• Full-page official publicity photos
• A scrapbook collage of band members and special guests taken during the making of FAST AND BLUE
• Two pages specially devoted to the CD and DVD storage

“FAST AND BLUE is about how life can change so quickly, but yet this life we live may be but one of many we live throughout one long soul life,” says LaRue. “The esoteric mysteries of the Knight’s Templar, the Holy Grail, and even my own indigenous culture all tie together in a big musical story. Many of us involved in the project have a deep interest in the many facets of this story, including Steve Adams’ CD SOLOMON’S KEY and John Payne’s continuing work on a Dan Brown-related theme.”

Based in Northeastern Oklahoma and working for her tribe (United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma), Lisa LaRue is not only fulfilling her dreams but hoping to be an inspiration to other native entrepreneurs. While staying in her home community and doing important work for her tribe, she is recording a progressive rock album with musicians from around the world! Progressive rock has recently witnessed a resurgence across the world, particularly in the UK, but as a Native American woman, Lisa has taken on a new challenge of working with musicians of different cultures and backgrounds to work in a unique way — each participant writes and records their own parts without any musical direction, but what comes from their heart. The combination of backgrounds, influences, demographics and talent is not only proof that music is the universal language, but that an indigenous woman can stay in her own tribal community and still work with the world and touch the world as well, in a way that is not stereotypical but uniting — while using modern technology to create the final product. One of the “hold-ups” to native people being successful is the lack of opportunities in the tribal community. But with the Internet and other forms of technology, it is now possible.

“I’ve connected with fabulous musicians from other parts of the United States, Greece, and the UK, and we all share the common goal of creating great music, and have proven to ourselves that we write and play in spiritual harmony,” says LaRue. By allowing each musician the opportunity to add to the songs what comes from their hearts without any musical direction, the outcome will show that music IS, indeed, the Universal Language.

Special thanks to the many fans who were involved in the 2KX project and reaped rewards for their contributions. Those who pledged to the project qualified to receive a song written by LaRue for them or a loved one as well as numerous other rewards for their participation.

-Graveyard Reveals Track Listing, Comments On Producing Analogously!

Swedish classic rockers Graveyard just revealed the track listing for the highly anticipacted Nuclear Blast debut HISINGEN BLUES:

1. Ain’t Fit To Live Here
2. No Good, Mr. Holden
3. Hisingen Blues
4. Uncomfortably Numb
5. Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)
6. Longing
7. Ungrateful Are The Dead
8. RSS
9. The Siren

The album was produced, recorded, and mixed in analog by Don Alsterberg (Jose Gonzales, Junip, Soundtrack Of Our Lives, The International Noise Conspiracy) at Don Pierre Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is due out in Europe on March 25, 2011.

The band offer their commentary on their recording sessions: “We recorded the album in several different sessions. As much as possible, we tried to do live. All of it is 100% analog… and we’d like to take this opportunity to once and for all kill the argument that recording analog is ‘retro’ or that we’ve got a ‘retro’ sound. Analog recording is just one technique among many. Just like you build a house using bricks, wood or whatever. Paint a picture using oil, acrylic or Photoshop. Our music sounds best recorded analog; other bands sound best using nothing but computers and a thousand filters. Analog recording brings warmth and an organic feeling to the music, that’s what we like. To us, ‘retro’ is often something negative, meaning an unimaginative repetition of what has been or just a carbon copy of something old. We play timeless classic hard rock with a lot of blues and psychedelic influences among many others. And regarding analog being retro: Go through the history of rock and pick your best 20 albums. How many of them have been recorded on computers? Don’t mistake classic pieces of work for retro.”

The title track can be streamed at the official Graveyard MySpace profile:

A limited edition 7″ picture disc of the title track “Hisingen Blues,” backed with the exclusive vinyl track “Granny And Davis” and featuring different artwork, is now available through Nuclear Blast Germany’s mail order: http://www.nuclearblast.de/mailorder . This release is limited to 500 copies worldwide and they’re destined to go fast!

-Marazene Machine: Digital Single Of Motley Crue Cover Due On 3.22.11, Audio Sample And Cover Art Posted

CHICAGO, IL — Chicago’s Electro-Metal Marazene Machine will release their edgy electronic/whiskey/sex-fueled rendition of the Motley Crue classic “Live Wire’ as a digital single on March 22, 2011.

An audio sample has been posted on the band’s official YouTube channel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/marazenemachine and/or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko1uyU1mQh8 ) and the cover art has been posted on the band’s official website http://www.MarazeneMachine.com/ .

“Live Wire” marks the first new material from the band since 2007 and provides the first listen as to how the band’s new album and continually developing sound is shaping up. Two other new song titles — “Welcome To Your Holiday” and “The Very Sad Fate Of Miss Desdemona Antoinette Marceaux” — have previously been announced and are expected to be key tracks on the as yet untitled collection.

A release date for the new album is forthcoming.

The principle songwriting tandem of producers DieTrich Thrall and Nikk Skum have largely kept a low profile since the tragic loss of co-founding member Kristopher “Kristov” Kemp to a three-year battle with colon cancer in early 2009. In recent months however the members have been dropping hints as to demo progress while putting the finishing touches on the follow-up to 2007’s critically regarded MACHINATION album.

“We’ve entered a new phase for this new album and for our band,” commented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist DieTrich Thrall. “The wait is over and the rumors are 100% true. We are back and we are ready to release an onslaught of new music.”

“The rust is burning off the gears as the machine heats up,” multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Nikk Skum offered. “We’ve been spring-loaded for awhile now. Once this train leaves the station, it’s not stopping till the end of the line…”

Marazene Machine won over industry insiders and fans Nationwide with their explosive, high-energy performances while touring the US and Canada 100% DIY with such acts as Mushroomhead, The Human Abstract, Psyclon Nine, DeadStar Assembly, and Wednesday 13.

After touring the country relentlessly for five years, the singer of a Pennsylvania hardcore band decided to stop everything, lock himself in his basement and turn a new page. Armed with a four-track and a life long obsession with Neil Young, Black Flag, and Sabbath, he re-emerged two days later with the blueprint for what would become Backwoods Payback. With the help of a few like-minded individuals the band transformed into fully operational Death Star of riffage before the end of that year.

Staying true to the D.I.Y. sensibilities of their past, Backwoods Payback spread their word one song, town, and person at a time. The band toured the US whenever possible, self-recorded and released their own EPs and full-lengths, and acted (and continue acting) as hosts and goodwill ambassadors of sorts to touring bands from all over the world. Small bar shows led to bigger ones and weekend tours turned into month-long jaunts. After several years and countless trips crisscrossing the country, Backwoods Payback found themselves sharing the stage with the likes of The Hidden Hand, Exodous, Gwar, and Cradle Of Filth.

Mike Cummings: Guitar, Vocals

-I was looking for some old kids’ TV shows on DVD the other day and stumbled across “My Dad The Rock Star,” the Gene Simmons-executive produced show from 2003-2004. I remember hearing about this a while ago but never actually saw the show, so I grabbed this collection of the series’ first six episodes (entitled “Dad’s Debut”) for a measly three bucks. (Oddly, it was in the “used” section but it was still shrink-wrapped and obviously brand new.) The bonus features include an interview with Gene where he stated Kiss had released 45 (!!) albums.

Now, I’m a fairly knowledgeable Kiss fan but I’m not sure what math he’s using to arrive at that astronomical number. He’s got to be counting every single cheapo compilation/”best of” release, right? Or maybe he’s counting all the CDs in the boxed set as separate albums? 🙂 I know you don’t care but I’ll tell you anyway: I have them at 23 studio albums, 6 live albums, 1 boxed set, and 3.5 compilations that one may consider “essential.” (I list DOUBLE PLATINUM (1978), KILLERS (1982), and SMASHES, THRASHES, AND HITS (1988) in this category because they contain new tracks and/or re-mixes significant enough to almost count as new tracks. YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST!! (1996) is the “.5” because it’s an oddball; it has some previously-unreleased live stuff and an exclusive reunion-era interview with Jay Leno. Your mileage may vary.

Oh, and yeah, the band performs on its own tribute album KISS MY ASS (1994), there is one new song on the “Detroit Rock City” soundtrack (1999), and KISS KLASSICS (2007) features old songs re-recorded by the current lineup. I suppose they are worth special mentions but I’m not sure exactly what to do with ’em…)

Beyond these releases you have throwaways like GREATEST KISS, THE VERY BEST OF KISS, ICONS, etc. So if you just include what I listed above you’re getting close to 35 albums — which, any way you slice it, is *freakin’* impressive — but it just made me laugh when he said 45 in the interview. I want to know how he arrived at it. Is he including all their home videos and KISSOLOGY sets in that number?

As for the cartoon show itself, wow, Gene’s stamp is ALL over it. Beyond the obvious stuff like the rock star dad Rock Zilla having a long tongue, sporting platform boots, and wearing makeup, other aspects of the cartoon include such Gene-familiar concepts as coveting gold records, sci-fi comics/cartoons, the rock star working as a teacher, paparazzi trying to photograph the rock star unmasked, etc. My six-year-old liked it pretty well but I can see why it didn’t last more than one season — it just doesn’t “pop.” And this is from a huge Kiss/Gene fan… Still, I’m glad I stumbled upon it for three bucks.

-You can only resist the Tiger Blood for so long… I saw in the paper this past Sunday that Charlie Sheen “bought out the entire left-field seating area at Angel Stadium one night in 1996 in hope he and a couple of friends (including Bret Michaels of Poison) could snag a home run ball.”

-I went to get ashes this morning, and as I was entering the church I saw guy coming out wearing an Iron Maiden T-shirt. Awesome.

-In my current playlist: DivineFire – EYE OF THE STORM (Liljegren Records), Line Of Fire – s/t (DELUXE EDTION) (Divebomb Records), Seven Thorns – RETURN TO THE PAST (Nightmare Records), Athorn – PHOBIA (AFM Records).

It says a lot about an album when you just have to play it over and over. And you’re not playing it over and over just because its euphonious sound has you spellbound, but because the songs are so f*cking complex! THE BURIAL TREE (II) is the follow-up to Ana Kefr’s debut album, VOLUME 1, which I had the pleasure of reviewing when it first came out. Back then, I was blown away by the labyrinth of hidden meanings and connections throughout the album. By comparison to VOLUME 1, THE BURIAL TREE (II) is like VOLUME 1’s hard-as-steel, don’t-f*ck-with-me, older brother. It makes VOLUME 1 (which was a decidedly heavy album in itself) look mild and mellow! That of course does not mean to diminish what VOLUME 1 was, but one can tell that Ana Kefr has savagely transformed into something bigger, stronger, and breathing a new brand of heavy metal altogether. While the band described themselves as “philosophy metal” and “religio-political” back in 2009, those two epithets don’t quite cover the gamut that Ana Kefr has grown to encompass. THE BURIAL TREE (II) is another concept album, but rather than focus more on the Islamic religion, the album sheds a scrutinizing and chastising eye on the Christian faith. The entire album is riddled with references to the Bible. Oh but that’s not all. The lyrics are written more like excerpts from a book. There are strings of dialogues between characters, which tells the story of THE BURIAL TREE (II). Anyone who even has a remote appreciation for literary ingenuity will delight in reading the lyrics for its cohesive and poetic story-telling charm. And for those looking for something more than a mere story, then let me tell you, there are significant passages, numbers, etc., that when discovered and pieced together correctly, unveil some of the buried secrets of THE BURIAL TREE (II). As for the actual music, now, that is again something that puts me into a conundrum. Ana Kefr can assume space under the “prog” umbrella, but that wouldn’t do them justice. I think I’d need to draw me a Venn diagram; pencil in circles of varying sizes to indicate obscure musical genres, and then draw Ana Kefr’s circle right in the middle of it all. THE BURIAL TREE (II) uses some nontraditional instruments, like a saxophone! The track, “Monody,” (my current personal favorite), begins with the saxophone crooning a tune tinged with a downtrodden mood. But the jazzy and forlorn trance quickly rushes head first into heavy metal fashion, while still retaining the elegance radiated from the saxophone. This song also had the addition of a female guest singer, which gave the song an angelic flair. Coupled next to malicious death growls delivered by Ana Kefr’s front man, the guest singer gave the song a contrasting, yet striking duet! Another song that I have to mention is 18 second long, “Jeremiad.” Let me tell you, it is a bitch and a half to sing as fast as they are singing on this song! It’s grindcore-esque, and nearly impossible to decipher the lyrics, but that’s also the point. “In The House Of Distorted Mirrors” is an example of just how musically diverse this album is. It starts off with some funky techno-distorted sounds which overshadows everything else going on. It takes you by surprise and engages you into the song. I was impressed with the numerous ways this song contorted itself in it’s less than six minute duration. There was a soft-spoken chorus, melodic instrumental interlude, and robotic-sounding female voice speaking some of the lyrics in an informative tone. The song does nothing that you would expect it to do, which could be said about a lot of Ana Kefr’s songs. Really, with this album, I struggled to pick favorites, because each song spoke to me in a different way and kept me on my toes! Two more mentions: “The Zephirus Circus” and “Apoptosis.” “The Zephirus Circus” actually starts off with the calm plucking of an acoustic guitar. Later in the song we’re met with high pitched, blood-curdling screaming. Then to round it out, there’s of course circus-inspired music. More like circus music you’d get if you went to one on Halloween night. It’s deliciously dark and sends shivers down your spine. “Apoptosis” opens with a memorable jingle done with the keyboard. But it’s still heavy as all f*ck, and true to Ana Kefr fashion, tosses in odd distortions to tickle your brain. THE BURIAL TREE (II) can be listened to straightforwardly as a metal album, and people would love it. But for those craving more than just a brutal voice, violent pummeling of the drums, and sludgy guitar riffs, will appreciate the concerted effort of Ana Kefr. The lyrics themselves are ample enough to spend hours of interpreting on. Everything about this album screams creativity and dedication to art! A must-hear album!
