-Rage: Peavy Reports From The 70,000 Tons Of Metal Cruise

After a quite relaxing flight and a surprisingly unannoying entry into the US, we arrive at our hotel which is located directly at Miami Beach. So that is the territory of Crockett & Tubbs. After getting some food at the beach restaurant we indulge in the happy hour at our hotel bar, having diverse free drinks. Later on, we continue at diverse other bars, savoring a few buckets of barley sherbet. At some point I’m fagged out and go for sleep while André is considering getting a new tattoo and Victor is carrying on his pub tour with some coincidental acquaintances, a few fellow Russians.

Here we go. We try to get to the harbor by taxi which is quite difficult as half of Miami is closed because of obsequies for two policemen (Crockett & Tubbs ??) who were killed in a shootout two days before. After a number of detours our taxi driver finds a way, dropping us off at our shuttle. The Majesty Of The Seas is a gigantic floating tower, having everything on board one could wish for. Pure luxury — in comparison, the “Traumschiff” (from a popular German TV series) is a bleak nutshell. In fact, all the black, long-haired masses which were populating every spot aboard didn’t really fit the ambience. Just imagine Wacken on sea. We move into comfortable cabins with sea view, being door to door with diverse buddies from all the other bands. A real alumni reunion.

There are three stages, with the main stage being located in a theater (decks 5-7), one deck across a smaller stage in a lounge, and the pool stage upstairs on deck 12. Every band, 40 in numbers, was expected to play at about the same time. Our departure is being delayed for some time because a crane which is to heave the stage elements for the pool stage on board was late due to the jam in the city. Although the departure will be just one hour later, it costs the organizer an extra 100,000 dollars as he has to get a new leaving out permission.

But then we say ship ahoy. The scenery of Miami passing by at dusk is really impressing. We first tipple at the pool, watching the first bands who directly start playing after departure.

Today is our first show on the main stage. Although Victor has to go without his new self designed Victor Smolski Signature Amp by Engl which he presented at the NAMM show in L.A. some weeks ago (there were problems during delivery), everything is running without technical problems. We check the sound with soundman Gerd and stage tech Dominik in front of a number of fans who are hungering for us. At the show the theater is packed and we play a great gig, mixing new and well-tried material. The atmosphere is awesome, especially many US fans are incredibly happy seeing us finally. Overall there are fans from all over the world, also many from Germany.

After the show we first dine in one of the many restaurants on board, treating us with some fine food around the clock. There is almost everything a heart desires. Afterwards we have party until the doc comes (as the German saying goes). Especially Victor is totally in party mode. Victor, being single at the moment (attention ladies :-), didn’t leave out anything. Oh dear, and we have the cabin next to him.

Shore leave. In the morning we’re landing at Cozumel, a Caribbean island which belongs to Yucatan, Mexico. André prefers to honour the local shopping and bar miles while Victor and myself visit the old Mayan city of Tulum which is more than 1,000 years old. Really superb. 25 degrees Centigrade and bright sunshine directly at the Caribbean Sea. We aren’t letting that skip so we go swimming extensively in the afternoon. The water has optimal temperature, it’s azure blue and the palmy beach is snow-white, what more can we ask from life? Of course there’s one thing: Metal! And Metal is what we’re delivering at prime time at the evening with maximum joy, playing in front of a packed house. The atmosphere is topping the gig from the previous day although we’re pretty swaying over the stage. But not due to alcohol but rather from swell, which is stronger on our return voyage. The swell doesn’t matter though, as the increasing playing level is in a way compensating for it. We carry on celebrating the party with the other bands and fans properly. Actually one of the best things on the trip is that the contact between bands and the fans is so direct. We’re available for everything — autographs, photos, small talk, etc., no problem. Anyway, everybody keeps cool and no one is annoying, can’t get any better. Victor is thoroughly taking care of his female fans on his way.

Except for having party and giving an autograph and promo session we haven’t anything to do today. The German television channel ZDF is filming us for a docu about this spectacle, we give various interviews, lots of international press/TV people travelling with us. Unfortunately, I miss the scheduled meet & greet as I was invited to the Captain’s Dinner.

The whole crew is forgathered at the bridge of the boat, finest food is being served while the press members do photo sessions with the bands and crew. During the small talk with the Finnish captain of the ship, the information passed that this first time (test) event makes Royal Caribbean, the cruise line company, feel extremely positive. Not only do they have heavenly sales, but there wasn’t any trouble or any damage also. They might have assumed the Metal fans will dismantle the whole ship and half of the people will go overboard drunken, but nothing of that kind happened. As we’re told by the enthusiastic crew, the nagging pensioners are more stressful. So you can see: If there were more metal heads, the world would be a better place, hihi…

Too bad, it’s the end today. Everybody involved agrees that this journey could have been even longer. Anyway, there will be a repetition of this spectacle, maybe the festival will develop into a solid institution. Anyway, we hope that we will be reinvited. Everybody on board had this “we’re doing Metal history” feeling, and I can only advise you: Be there next time, it was really amazing.

Thanks to all participants for this unforgettable experience!

-The Rods Support Forthcoming Release, VENGEANCE, With Upcoming Texas Appearances

Most well-versed metalheads will be very familiar with the Rods and their contribution to heavy metal. Such classic albums as 1981’s THE RODS and 1982’s WILD DOGS fit perfectly in with the sound of the burgeoning “New Wave of British Heavy Metal” scene (despite the fact that the Rods were New York natives!), and resulted in shows with such big-time acts as Iron Maiden, the Scorpions, Twisted Sister, and Ozzy Osbourne, as well as taking a then-unknown Metallica out as support on the Rods’ first headlining tour.

Now, Texas fans will be able to not only catch the Rods in full concert flight, but also get to the meet the band at a record store appearance. On March 19, the band (singer/guitarist David “Rock” Feinstein, bassist Garry Bordonaro, and drummer Carl Canedy) will be performing, meeting fans and signing merchandise at Cheapo Records in Austin at 11:00 a.m. Then, later in the evening (10:15 p.m, to be exact), the band will be performing at Rusty Spurs in Austin (as part of the SXSW Festival).

May 10 will see the official release of VENGEANCE, a recording that includes the first single “The Code,” featuring lead vocals from Feinstein’s cousin, Ronnie James Dio (which was one of the very last songs Ronnie ever recorded, before his passing last year). VENGEANCE will be released via the Niji Entertainment Group, and comes hot on the heels of Feinstein’s recently-released solo album, BITTEN BY THE BEAST. 2011 also marks the 30 year anniversary for this veteran metal band.

As renowned Quiet Riot/Ozzy/Dio/Whitesnake/Blue Oyster Cult bassist Rudy Sarzo remembers, “The Rods opened up for Ozzy during the 1981 BLIZZARD OF OZZ tour. I was blown away by their no holds barred metal onslaught performance and became an instant fan!” With a full US tour planned for the summer, fans will soon be able to experience the mighty metal of the Rods first hand themselves.

VENGEANCE Track Listing:

1. Raise Some Hell
2. I Just Wanna Rock
3. Rebels Highway
4. Ride Free Or Die
5. The Code (featuring Ronnie James Dio)
6. Livin’ Outside The Law
7. Let It Ripp

-Duff McKagan’s Loaded To Sweden Rock Festival 2011!

Sweden Rock Festival
June 8-11, Solvesborg

Duff McKagan is obviously ever-famous as the bassist in the classic Guns N’ Roses lineup and Velvet Revolver. But since 2008, his own project Loaded has also progressed impressively. With this band, originally formed as early as 1999, Duff handles vocals and rhythm guitar. The sound is rough and rugged hard rock with strong punk influences, and the band names the Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, and Black Flag among their influences. Loaded have so far recorded three full-length albums, most recently THE TAKING which will be released this April. However, they are primarily a live act, and what makes their SRF-debut even more anticipated is that this will be Duff’s first SRF appearance ever!

-AFM Records New Releases

Release Date: April 19, 2011

What a year — and then another one! Things have been moving fast and furiously for The New Black since 2009, with critical praise for their debut album, appearances at every major festival and incredible gigs everywhere. The German quintet opened up for the mighty AC/DC in front of 65,000 rabid fans, supported Alter Bridge on a sold-out German tour, played alongside Volbeat and Black Label Society and dominated at Wacken and at Rock Am Ring…

A pretty eye-opening story, considering that the band was basically formed by coincidence (and heavy drinking), solely for the love of rock, huge riffs, and the power of a great song. The New Black’s tale proves once again that authentic music goes a long way — with real musicians, real songwriting, and real sweat. There’s no juvenile fist-clenching going on here — it’s more like a knockout punch.

This uncompromising ethic anchors the band’s second release, II: BETTER IN BLACK. While their debut album was an enthusiastic exploration of new territory, these days the bands are fully in tune with themselves after laying the crucial groundwork. Apart from the musical abilities needed to do the job, it’s the immeasurable vibes within the band that really make them what they are — their groove, their sound, their vibe, and (again) their songs.

When it comes to delivering the music, the band are on fire. II: BETTER IN BLACK brings you classic heavy rock tunes such as the powerful stomper “The King I Was,” unbelievable hooks like those in “Batteries & Rust” and rude riffs along the lines of “Downgrade.” There’s also Southern rock with slide guitar and harmonica (“Altar Boys”), modern grooves (“Better In Black”), epic ambition (“When It All Ends”), and laid-back acoustic vibes with “Happy Zombies” — a song that was described by Metal Hammer as “a good-time catchy tune that Kid Rock could storm the charts with.” II: BETTER IN BLACK has it all: riffs, hooks, solos, melodies, and plenty of headbanging. Godzilla with a grin, if you will.

The five road-hardened musicians are committed to good songwriting, not to current trends or technical geekery. For that reason, The New Black self-produced their second opus at their studio in Würzburg. II: BETTER IN BLACK was mixed by the band’s longstanding engineer Michael Dotzler and axeman Fabian Schwarz, with Achim Köhler (Primal Fear, Amon Amarth) adding a final punch during the mastering.

Once again, Fludid’s voice is The New Black’s secret weapon: he easily holds his own against any international rock vocalist. In fact, Britain’s Kerrang! remarked “You might expect this honest-to-God rock machine to hail from Texas rather than Germany,” before labeling the debut album “muscular.” Other publications chimed in with “clever” (Metal Hammer), “superior” (Visions), and “big boys playing rock ‘n’ roll with a taste of whiskey” (Rock Hard). Out of the blue, the record hit Number 2 in Metal Hammer’s monthly Soundcheck, while the readers of Rock Hard voted The New Black one of the Top 10 newcomers of 2009.

With II: BETTER IN BLACK, The New Black continue their spectacular story, with a professional work ethic and a firm focus on the important elements — the music and the joy of playing it. And, of course, with a huge riff up their sleeves.

Track List:
1. Better In Black
2. The King I Was
3. Batteries & Rust
4. Downgrade
5. Into Modesty
6. Altar Boys
7. Happy Zombies
8. My Favorite Disease
9. Fading Me Out
10. When It All Ends
11. Last Chance To Throw Dirt
12. Sun Cries Moon

A Life Divided – PASSENGER

Release Date: April 19, 2011

What does it mean “to live” if you blank out the banal everyday-life, the daily tasks and efforts? You will find the true core of life. The core in which lie hidden the main features of existence — love, suffering and death.

The Munich, Germany-based five-piece electro rock unit A Life Divided started a brave journey to the core of our existence. And brought to live literally “a live divided” at the very heart of this journey. It is something that lives in every one of us, if we allow a glance. “Everyone has multiple personalities. In different situations we act different, depending on the situation,” explains singer Jürgen Plangger the bottom line of his journey — and thereby the journey of A Life Divided. “At work, on the sofa or on the next first date, there are a 1,000 different lives within us. Not everybody can deal with all of them.”

A Life Divided faced self-reflection and created music out of it. The result is an incredible dramatic, electrifying, dark-aesthetic album. An album that deals with deep personal issues and sets them to music. Issues, “about which you would only talk about after some glasses of wine,” as Jürgen Plangger admits. Songs like “Heart On Fire” or “Save Me” tell about love and suffering. However, the band doesn’t compose Hollywood-pictures out of those topics, but faces the often much more dramatic reality, the “certainty that you only have a really limited influence on those things,” as the singer explains. “Everyone tries to maneuver himself somehow through this labyrinth. Some blind, some stupid, some clever and some simply by auto-pilot. The last ones are supposed to be the lucky ones. But all the others that think about such things will certainly understand the record.”

Though they are newcomers yet, they had enough time to gain the courage to allow such a personal, intimate insight. Founded in 2003 the band already released two records on a smaller label and toured with Oomph! (No. 1 in the single charts at that time) in 2006 and with Eisbrecher (No. 1 in the media control long-player charts with their current output EISZEIT) in 2007. There also is a special relationship to that band: singer Jürgen Plangger has been Eisbrecher’s live guitarist for several years now. So it’s no wonder that Eisbrecher’s co-captain and producer Noel Pix is deeply involved into the production process of A Life Divided.

Track List:
1. Heart On Fire
2. Forever
3. Anyone
4. Words
5. Hey You
6. Doesn’t Count
7. Save Me
8. Other Side
9. Sounds Like A Melody
10. Change
11. The End

-Napalm Records New Releases

Journey into mysticism and majesty with Napalm Records’ four newest releases: Sons Of Seasons’ MAGNISPHYRICON, Power Quest’s BLOOD ALLIANCE, Kampfar’s MARE, and Vintersorg’s JORDPULS. All four records are set for North American release on April 5th.

Sons Of Seasons step into the limelight once again to deliver a second album that is even more impressive than their debut. MAGNISPHYRICON is not a mere continuation of their chosen path, but rather a bold step into unexplored musical territories. Led by mastermind Oliver Palotai (Kamelot, Doro), the band performs the difficult feat of balancing technical prowess with memorable melodies. Some of the best examples of this gripping mix of musical complexity and headbanging quality are “Soul Symmetry” and “Tales Of Greed.” The new songs also provide Henning Basse (Metalium) a forum in which to prove his vocal talents and ennoble the album with sweeping renditions. Simone Simons (Epica) again lends her captivating voice, making the track “Sanctuary” one of the album’s undisputed highlights. The powerful and lively production completes the listening experience and gives the tracks their crystal-clear quality. MAGNISPHYRICON is a profound and multifaceted melodic symphonic metal album that will whisk you away to a breathtaking sound universe.

Following a relatively long break, the band revolving around mastermind Steve Williams will finally release a new album! BLOOD ALLIANCE presents the melodic power metal combo at its best. Driving drums, catchy metal riffs, and virtuous guitar and keyboard leads are the ingredients making up Power Quest’s sound. Once again, the band focuses on memorable melodies and captivating hooklines, without ever neglecting the fine details that creep out of the woodwork with each successive run. The new man on the mic, Chity Somapala, has proven his weight in gold with powerful vocals on tracks such as the sweeping “Glorious,” or the catchy “Survive.” BLOOD ALLIANCE is not only a new chapter in Power Quest’s history, but also a loud and confident proclamation of melodic power metal that will not stop at merely convincing the genre’s fans of its musical prowess.

Kampfar – MARE
Kampfar’s latest album MARE opens a new chapter in the Norwegian band’s history, while delivering a true monument to black metal. Front man Dolk and the rest of the band have achieved the difficult task of giving their sound new impulses without losing their unique style. Isolated keyboard passages and sprechgesang consort with icy riffs, dark melodies, and oppressive drums. Dolk’s raw vocals continue to set the pace, while giving songs like “Bergtatt,” “Volvevers,” and the title track such intensity that they are left with no other choice but to crawl under the skin of even the most discerning black and pagan metal fans. The album was produced by none other than Peter Tägtgren (Abyss Studio), who provided the songs with a piercing and very powerful sound. MARE is the pagan black metal masters’ best work to date and is sure to become the genre’s next cult classic.

Vintersorg – JORDPULS
JORDPULS adds yet another masterpiece to Vintersorg’s already impressive discography. The unrelenting visionary allows this particular album to glimpse back at the past. The result is an imposing symbiosis of traditional and modern elements taken from the Swede’s characteristic sound cosmos. Folk metal anthems meet icy black metal passages and Nordic melodies. The mix delivers multifaceted and memorable songs that carry the mastermind’s unique signature. The album is completely sung in Swedish and its lyrics borrow from Vintersorg’s past themes: Revolving around man and nature, unique phenomena in the wild, and philosophical observations. Vintersorg’s unmistakable and powerful vocals — from clean to extreme — reign over each track with resounding force, while his production prowess gives the songs a crystal-clear and potent sound. JORDPULS (“Earth’s Pulse”) impressively combines tradition with modernism, while showcasing the best of the Swedish visionary.

-Onslaught Unveil First Video In 20 Years Via Metal Injection

A world premiere of the brand new video from UK thrash legends Onslaught is available via online video juggernaut Metal Injection now!

The title track to the band’s brutal new studio album, the video for “Sounds Of Violence,” is Onslaught’s first official video in twenty years, the last being from the band’s 1990 full-length IN SEARCH OF SANITY. “‘The Sound Of Violence,'” stated Onslaught vocalist Sy Keeler “was inspired by the horrendous loss of over 150,000,000 souls throughout the 20th Century, instigated by religious tyranny and dictatorial madness of humankind. The lyrics echo the horrific realities of war and remarkable resistance endured by our fellow men and women which continues to this day. Wake up world; welcome to a land of devastating brutality where conflict is a part of everyday life. This is the Sound Of Violence.” The video was filmed and edited By Lukas Hambach of Bloodwork Entertainment (Destruction, Gamma Ray) and produced by Tommy Morriello and Thosten Lütje.

Tune in to Metal Injection to see the new video now!

Onslaught’s fifth studio album SOUNDS OF VIOLENCE was released in North American in early February via Germany’s AFM Records. The now critically-acclaimed album falls perfectly in line with their massive 2007 comeback album KILLING PEACE, yet broadens the classic Onslaught style once again, helping the band maintain an original edge. Recorded and produced in the renowned Hansen-Studios (Destruction, Heathen, Mercenary), the blazing record boasts ten brand new original tracks, as well as a cover of Motörhead’s classic “Bomber,” featuring guest appearances by Phil Campbell (Motörhead) and Tom Angelripper (Sodom).

Stay tuned for more Onslaught updates as the band prepares to assault North America full-on later this year!

REBUILDING THE RUINS is a 74-minute concept CD produced by Chris Lucci and mastered by Grammy-nominated producer Eric Zimmermann (Fates Warning, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Buckcherry, Suicidal Tendencies, etc.), adding top-notch production to the release. The title track, “Rebuilding The Ruins,” was also selected by an indie film company to be used as a soundtrack for an upcoming short film to debut at Cannes/ Tribeca Film Festivals later next year.

What the press is saying:

“REBUILDING THE RUINS rivals their American brethren like Dream Theater or Symphony X, but also their kin across the Atlantic, where melodic progressive metal has never waned… For pure progressive metal from an American band, Images Of Eden’s REBUILDING THE RUINS casts them into the category of ‘a band to be reckoned with’ in the present, and future, for that matter.”
– Craig Hartranft (www.dangerdog.com)

“This third album from Images Of Eden makes an impact only few bands do…”
– Lars Bjorn (www.ice-vajal.com)

“REBUILDING THE RUINS goes far into announcing Images Of Eden as one of those bands to be reckoned with in the Progressive Metal genre. From deft songwriting to stellar musicianship to top notch production, REBUILDING THE RUINS is a force.” – Derric Miller (Hard Rock Haven)

“A majestic and uplifting triumph.” – Matthew Bankes (Rising Forces USA)

“REBUILDING THE RUINS is a great album by Images Of Eden that I would strongly advise fans of American-sounding progressive metal to take a listen to. There are enough memorable hooks, breathtaking instrumental runs, and interesting compositions to keep me coming back for more and more. If you’re a fan of Fates Warning and Dream Theater, checking out this album will be a mandatory benchmark for 2011. I’ll go with 3.5 stars here — Images Of Eden has created some standout material that’s surely worth looking into.” – Jeff B. (Sea Of Tranquility)

3. Multiverse
4. End Of Infinity
5. Transfection
6. Clean Room
7. Currents
8. Traveler
9. Ego Machine
10. Being No One
11. Entanglement
12. Mindsteps

Once again, Believer tapped into the artistic genius of Michael Rosner and Eye Level Studio to produce the TRANSHUMAN artwork and layout. “We wanted to work with Roz again on TRANSHUMAN as our visions of combining art and music truly parallel. He just gets it and his artwork is outside the typical box in a way that we strive for musically. It is an amazing collaboration that we have with Roz that continues to evolve. We are excited for everyone to see the final layout!”

The band continues: “Sonically we’re extremely happy with this album and can’t wait for other people to hear it. We feel like this is a really strong and unique album in the Believer catalogue and it’s something we’re definitely proud of.

“So what will you hear? We focused more on the overall musicality which included more instrumental layers than we used before. The vocals were also more of a focus as we have had much feedback throughout the years, specifically to get out of the one dimensional realm. Kurt wanted the vocals to be more complementary to the overall tune feel, so he used many facets of his vocal abilities. As with all Believer albums, this one is definitely unique.”

Transhumanism: The study of the ramifications, promises, and potential dangers of technologies that will enable us to overcome fundamental human limitations, and the related study of the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies.

Immensely heavy, deceptively melodic, ambitiously daring, and brilliantly played. Believer’s brand new concept album TRANSHUMAN available in Europe April 8, 2011!

Believer is:
Kurt Bachman – guitars/vocals
Joey Daub – drums
Jeff King – keyboards/guitars

-Stereokiller.com Launches Fully Customizeable Band Profile Pages, Challenges MySpace Music

Online Community With Over 250k Members And 40k Bands Looks To Further Foster Artist Development And Promotion

MySpace Music has had a stranglehold on the music hosting game for quite some time, but according to Chris Brickhouse, owner and operator of Stereokiller.com, their media player is outdated, their profiles are littered with MySpace navigation, and their pages take too long to load.

“The MySpace media player downgrades the bitrate of the music, making it sound ‘fuzzy’ and play at a lower volume, whereas our media player doesn’t require Flash… The music is exactly the same quality as uploaded,” said Brickhouse. “They degrade the songs to save disk space… We won’t sacrifice the music quality for a few bytes of space.”

Stereokiller.com’s fully customizable band profile pages are just the latest change in an ongoing effort to foster band development and promotion. Within five minutes a band could have their page up and running. The site allows users to do live previews of the site’s appearance before committing to the design, and the number of tracks a user can upload is unlimited.

In addition to visual customization, users have the ability to sell merchandise (without paying a fee) on their page. The interface allows them to manually add items, then facilitates a transaction (single or multiple) via PayPal. There is also the option to connect to display Twitter activity, list upcoming shows, embed videos, and update fans with news, etc.

Stereokiller.com started in 1998 as a forum for Hardcore, Metal, Punk, Hip Hop, Emo, and Indie fans. It has since become a free music hosting site and community with over 250,000 members and 40,000 bands.

The follow-up to the ravaging BURN long-player was mastered by James Murphy and features ten tracks of flawlessly executed thrash anthems. Said Rock Hospital in an early review of the record: “TIME IS UP is a killer sophomore effort by four dudes who do justice to their musical forefathers. Cliff Burton would smile on this release.” Added Thrash Hits, “Playing a style of metal that has been around 30 years always runs the risk of feeling tired and overly derivative, but TIME IS UP is so lively and bubbling over with personality that it never so much as flirts with those potential pitfalls.” Metal Review agreed: “Havok’s purest intention is to thrash your face into a circle-pitted-pulp, and more often than not they’re wildly successful.”

Check out a TIME IS UP video teaser at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYx1YCczlfg .

Havok formed in 2004. After two self-released albums, the band caught the attention of England’s Candlelight Records and by the Spring of 2009, the band unleashed BURN to the metal masses. The album peaked on CMJ’s Loud Rock chart at 15 and broke MediaGuide’s Top 10.

We’re currently adding the final touches and making some final tweaks, but the light at the end of the tunnel is drawing very near! -This from Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot’s review of a recent Lady Gaga concert in Chicago: “‘It’s raining unicorns and gay teddy bears,’ Lady Gaga said Monday at the sold-out United Center as the audience hurled gifts at her. Then she bit the heads off several dolls, but allowed a mini-Paul Stanley to live another day and watch the show from the lip of the stage. Kiss, and Kiss-style spectacle, still rules in the Land of Gaga.”

-I saw “Gnomeo & Juliet” a couple weeks ago with the family. In case you haven’t heard, Ozzy does a voice in the flick. It’s not a huge part but he’s quite funny and, surprisingly, 100% intelligible!

-Even if you don’t know or care about The Dwarves, take a few minutes to read through that “25 things you don’t know about the Dwarves” PDF file linked above. It’s pretty good.

-That Symfonia project/band sure sounds cool. I had no idea Timo Tolkki was working with Andre Matos and the rest of those guys. I hope it’s a good album.

-Wow, look at those Stereokiller.com guys, pissing in MySpace’s Cheerios.

-In my current playlist: Overdrive – ANGELMAKER (Lion Music), Casanova – ONE NIGHT STAND (DELUXE EDTION) (Divebomb Records), Elvenking – RED SILENT TIDES (AFM Records), Robin Beck – THE GREAT ESCAPE (Her Majesty’s Music Room).

Destruction, Sadus, and Kreator. Any of these bands your faves? How about old school blackened thrash? Well the aforementioned bands and sub-genre are the influences of Norwegian-based Nekromantheon. Apparently, according to the band that is, they are tired of the trendy modern thrash bands on the scene lately. That I can understand and sympathize with, but on the other hand, it’s not like there is a shortage of new old school thrash (or blackened thrash for that matter). I remember reviewing quite a few from last year alone. But onward to the album! It starts off with “Gringo Death,” the intro sounding like it belongs as a soundtrack to a horror film. But it’s not long before the guitars take over with a catchy riff and the drums start smashing away. It truly does sound like a throwback to old school thrash. The vocal style is thick and raspy. It’s not anything too rough or epically brutal, but it still manages to sound gritty and mean. The singer screams at a fast pace, keeping up excellently with the cacophony of the instruments. My only gripe was that the vocal style sounded too rushed, almost like the vocalist would be exhausted and out of breath by the end of the song. “The Point Of No Return” is the follow-up to the fireball first song we heard. This song wastes no time in upping the ante and rushing into ultra-fast performing — again both vocally and instrumentally. There was a notable guitar piece about halfway through which stood out from the usual lighting-fast mayhem that is usually being played. It’s moments like that on DIVINITY OF DEATH that make the album something more than a blur. It’s those moments where it sounds like they tried to focus on the music instead of making it sound like a contest to see which song could be played the fastest. “Lex Talionis” was the shortest on the album, clocking in at less than a minute. From start to finish, it’s a shredder of a song — all instrumental — but it will leave you with your head spinning. “Psyanide” I liked a little bit better than the rest. The clanking of the cymbals and the dramatic pounding on the drums could be heard above the racing guitars. Also, the vocalist here slows down, which makes the song more of something you want to sing along to. After listening to DIVINITY OF DEATH, I can assert that Nekromantheon succeeded in sounding like a blackened, old school thrash band. Aside from it sounding too rushed, it’s a decent album with some standout moments with the guitars and drums.

Rising prog metal stars Seventh Wonder refuse to tarnish their track record of creating music that is at once intricate, passionate, and melodic, impressing both veteran and neophyte with their fourth album THE GREAT ESCAPE. Seventh Wonder’s tight musicianship is well-known at this point so I won’t belabor it but rest assured you’ll find plenty of virtuosic displays to, well, wonder at here! Progressive music is often notoriously hard to get into without some time and effort and there are areas of THE GREAT ESCAPE that definitely require patience but Seventh Wonder also know how to write material that is relatively accessible, case in point being the spirited and infectious “Alley Cat” and atmospheric rocker “Move On Through.” Where even seasoned prog devotees will have heavy lifting to do is on the 30-minute (!) epic that is the title track, the song a treasury of premium composition and technique; for me a bit of editing might have made for a more streamlined listening experience but the guys manage keep even this prolonged entity exciting and interesting. Seventh Wonder deserve to be mentioned alongside those in the upper echelon of the genre, reflecting the modern sensibilities of Circus Maximus and Vanden Plas, comparable in technical skill to masters such as Dream Theater and Symphony X but always maintaining a foundation built on the original works of architects like Kansas and Triumph. In a word, exquisite.
