-Stryper Get Back To Their Roots On Covers-Heavy Set, THE COVERING

Christian rockers Stryper are offering fans a headbanging view of who
their influences were early on, with the arrival of an almost entire
album’s worth of covers, THE COVERING. Set for release on February
15th via Big3 Records, the album includes 12 rocking covers, as well
as an all-new original tune, “God.” And most significantly, the album
marks the return of original bassist Tim Gaines back into the Stryper
fold, setting up the first Stryper release in years to feature the
definitive lineup of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar),
Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums).

According to Michael Sweet, the impetus for putting out a mostly
covers set was a simple one. “Every Stryper album is pretty serious
and pretty bold in the lyrical faith sense of the word. We just wanted
to roll our sleeves up, cut loose, and have some fun.” And when it
came time to pick out a listing of tunes to cover, all the band had to
do was look back upon their club days. “Growing up, before Stryper was
even Stryper, we were a cover band. We played Gazzarri’s on the Strip
for years — we would do originals but also do covers, as well. We
always did Priest covers and Maiden covers, all those bands that we
grew up on and influenced us.”

What fans get is a CD that runs the gamut from 1970s era classic rock
(Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” Kiss’
“Shout It Out Loud,” etc.) to 1980’s era heavy metal (Black Sabbath’s
“Heaven & Hell,” the Scorpions’ “Blackout,” “Iron Maiden’s “The
Trooper,” etc.). “A few things we set out to do on this album was to
stay true to the original — we didn’t want to disrespect the original
versions,” explains Michael. “I’m never going to sound like Bruce
Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio, nor would I ever try to. And having me
sing the song puts our own spin on it. We just all did our own thing
and with our own touches and feel — Robert, Tim, Oz, and myself — it
has that Stryper feel to it as well.”

Big3 Records Chairman Bill Edwards adds, “We are excited to allow
Stryper the creative freedom to do what they do best, and take this
album to the next level. We are very excited about working with the
band and helping make THE COVERING a widespread success.”

To support THE COVERING, Stryper is planning a tour that begins in
March, and when it comes to the set list, it will contain quite a few
surprises for longtime fans. “We’re probably going to pull out four
Stryper songs that haven’t been played in the set in years. And then
we’re probably going to do four covers. And then we’ve got a whole
slew of other Stryper songs that we’ve been playing for a long time.
So we probably have 20 songs in the set.” Stryper fans rejoice, more
anthemic metal will soon be on the way!

1. Set Me Free (Sweet)
2. Blackout (Scorpions)
3. Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath)
4. Lights Out (UFO)
5. Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas)
6. Highway Star (Deep Purple)

-Rage Front Man Comments On 70,000 Tons Of Metal Experience

German metal trio Rage were one of the many bands to successfully blow
fans away on the first ever 70,000 Tons Of Metal in January, as dozens
of bands and over 2,100 fans rocked the Gulf Of Mexico on a massive
cruise ship for three days. Rage tore the place apart with their
energetic live act, not only giving fans an incredible live
experience, but also having an amazing time themselves. “The 70,000
Tons Of Metal Boat cruise was one of the coolest experiences in Rage’s
career,” says Rage bassist/vocalist Peavy Wagner. “All on board
witnessed a making of history in the metal world. We are proud about
the fantastic reactions to our live sets! Let’s go do it again.”

Check out footage of the band playing “Highway To Hell” on the 70,000
Tons cruise with special guest Steve Smyth of Forbidden on second
guitar and more at http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=2157 .

Since 1985, German’s Rage have delivered their style of classic heavy
metal with absolute class. Their new album STRINGS TO A WEB is a
varied release, showcasing the different faces of the band; pure heavy
metal thunder, classical and progressive landscapes, and powerful
thrash anthems. Recorded at Twilight Hall Studio (Blind Guardian,
Saxon) and produced by Victor Smolski and their longtime friend
Charlie Bauerfeind (HammerFall, Helloween, and more), STRINGS TO A WEB
is like a journey through the history of the band, who celebrated
their 25th anniversary in 2010. Over the past quarter century, Rage
went through many changes, but always kept to their roots and
developed their incomparable style, and there is no doubt that their
current lineup is the strongest yet. Peavy Wagner’s voice is the main
trademark, along with the guitar wizard Victor Smolski and power
drummer André Hilgers, who round out the magical trio.

Rage continues to be busy touring in Europe, with tours of Spain and
Italy confirmed for March and April respectively. Stay up to date on
all live actions on the band’s websites and social network sites, and
stay tuned for more updates on Rage throughout the coming months.

-Iced Earth Update

Iced Earth Leader: “People Probably Think I Don’t Have It In Me Any
More. They’re Wrong.”

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — Iced Earth leader Jon Schaffer, hard at work
in his studio, promises the next Iced Earth album will be “pretty
f*ckin’ heavy.”

“I can tell you from the riffs and the attitude behind it,” he said,
“this is going to be a bad-ass record. This is inspired, focused, and
to the point.”

The album — set for release later this year — will be Iced Earth’s
10th studio outing, and the first since 2008’s THE CRUCIBLE OF MAN.
Unlike CRUCIBLE and FRAMING ARMAGEDDON (which was released in 2007),
the new album won’t be a concept. Instead, Schaffer promises a return
to the raw-and-heavy sound of Iced Earth’s classic fan-favorite

“This is really heavy stuff,” Schaffer said. “It’s a kick in the

He added: “People probably think I don’t have it in me any more. But
they’re going to be proved wrong about that. I can tell you this:
we’re coming back with a vengeance. We’re out for blood.”

This promises to be a grand year for Schaffer and company. Not only
will Iced Earth release a new album (followed by a world tour — which
management promises will take the band to countries it hasn’t
previously played), but the band will also release its long-awaited
six-hour, three-concert live DVD this Spring titled FESTIVALS OF THE

Commenting on the creative process of the new album the band mainman
R.D. Liapakis stated: “Mystic Prophecy is now more than ever in a
turning point in their history. FIREANGEL overcame our expectations
and our fans have shown us their support in the best possible way. The
tour we did with Stratovarius gave the band the chance to get a very
good sense of unity and groove which is generated by every member
contributing to whole which finally is presented to the fans. This is
what will make a difference in our upcoming album. The feeling of
unity, amongst us, enhances the effect we bring out. More power, more
feeling, more combined ideas, more diversity, but all in the thread
that goes through it all which is Mystic Prophecy. Two minds work
better than one, so imagine all five of us contributing equally to the
final result. I am confident that we’ll do our best to express what’s
in our souls and hope the fans like it. Up till now we seem to have a
common ground so this album will only enforce this bond with our fans
and help us create new ones.

Markus Sigfridsson (7Days, Harmony, & Dark Water)

The DivineFire Story 2004 – 2011

DivineFire was formed in 2004 by Finnish composer, guitarist and
drummer, Jani Stefanovic (Am I Blood, Sins Of Omission, Renascent,
Essence Of Sorrow, Miseration, The Weakening) and vocalist Christian
Liljegren (Golden Resurrection, Narnia, Audiovision). They also added
bass player Andreas Passmark (Royal Hunt, Narnia, Rob Rock, Stormwind,
these members will be the holy trinity of DivineFire.

DivineFire’s debut album GLORY THY NAME released in December 2004 was
very well received worldwide and the band has created a unique style
of metal. In October 2005 they did a well received Japanese tour to
push their second album HERO together with Italian metal bands Vision
Divine & Skylark. The deal with King Records in Japan went great and
now seven years later DivineFire and King Records still have a good
cooperation together and the support from Japanese fans.

DivineFire combines the heaviness from the more melodic extreme metal
with the melodies from the symphonic style of hard rock/metal while
also blending in beautiful vocal harmonies. The result has been a
tremendous mix and it takes the listener on an illustrious adventure
and celebrated musical journey and DivineFire have now delivered
incredible studio albums GLORY THY NAME, HERO, INTO A NEW DIMENSION,
FAREWELL, and now the fifth studio album EYE OF THE STORM will see the
light late March 2011.

The big change happen in 2009 when Andreas Passmark left the band and
DivineFire and also marked a new era for DivineFire when German
Pascual joined the band on vocals. He did the vocals on Narnia’s
latest release CURSE OF A GENERATION. The mix of Christian’s &
German’s voices blends perfect and also Jani do some small lead vocal
parts on the song “Hold On.” The sound on EYE OF THE STORM is very
powerful, majestic & melodic metal at its best.

The album is produced by Jani Stefanovic and the production in warmer
but still very heavy and powerful. The band has also done some new
recordings 2011 of their biggest hits “The World’s On Fire” & “Never
Surrender” and the DivineFire fans will not be disappointed they will
get all typical DivineFire elements. Big bombastic sound with lots of
symphonic elements mixed with extreme metal. The wait it now over and
here is the track list for DivineFire – EYE OF THE STORM.

The original “Metal Queen”! This moniker was also the name of Lee

won the title “Best Female Fronted Band” from an L.A. magazine.

Mixed by well known producer Sylvia Massey (Tool, System Of A Down),
this band has wickedly infections melodies and music that crosses many
lines in the sand of purists rock, alternative, electronic and metal
genres an extremely impressive, 10 fresh songs equaling a 45-minute
slab of hard-edged rock that never fails to deliver on all levels.

The band is fronted by singer June Park who wields a very impressive
almost otherworldly and fierce voice. Enigmatic and engaging she is
without a doubt, a star on the rise…

This Album has diversity-o-plenty but even so, has its own sound, the
band cannot be summed up easily but once heard will be remembered.

The four-piece is fulfilling the thirst of today’s music fans that are
in search of a new sound that triggers their ultimate aural pleasure.
Clandestine’s ultimate goal is combining diverse influences and styles
that mark a new generation with an unnamed creation while striving to
provide a sonic link from the past to the future.

Clandestine is a truly unique band, combining progressive rock with
female-fronted metal, a touch of electronic music that enhances the
futuristic timbre, and some smooth huge pop melodies. THE INVALID is a
must for fans of bands as diverse as Evanescence, Dream Theater, Fair
To Midland, Rush, Lacuna Coil, Tool and Between The Buried & Me. What
more can you ask for?

-Believer Completes Mixing And Mmastering For Upcoming Album!

Legendary Heavy Metal outfit Believer have finished the recordings on
their upcoming new album! Check their latest update below.

“We’re pleased to announce that mixing and mastering for the upcoming
album is complete. We decided early on in project that we wanted an
outside person to mix the record so we could spend more time writing
and recording. Kevin Leaman (Believer guitarist) recommended Kevin
Gutierrez from Assembly Line Studios for mixing this record. Leaman
had worked with Gutierrez previously and said that he was really easy
to work with. From the first telephone conversation it was clear that
Gutierrez understood exactly what we were looking for sonically and he
seemed really interested in helping us achieve that.

“We let Kevin know we wanted this album to sound very musical; not
just be heavy. We wanted to use the whole frequency range and not have
all the mids scooped out so that everything going on in the tunes was
audible. Most importantly, we wanted to keep the dynamics. We were a
little nervous about not being there physically for the mix, but we
spent so much time tweaking in the sounds for tracking that we were
confident he had good stuff to work with. The rough mixes we made for
ourselves already sounded pretty decent.

“Kevin was fast and efficient. He’d send us reference mixes as he
completed each song and we’d be emailing/texting comments back and
forth at all hours of the day and night. He was very responsive to our
change requests and was really helpful in setting up the mastering
session and communicating what we wanted to Maor Appelbaum of Maor
Appelbaum Mastering.

“Maor also understood what we were trying to achieve with the dynamics
and the overall listening experience we wanted to create on this

“Sonically we’re extremely happy with this album and can’t wait for
other people to hear it. We feel like this is a really strong and
unique album in the Believer catalog and it’s something we’re
definitely proud of.

“So what will you hear? As we mentioned, we focused more on the
overall musicality which included more instrumental layers than we
used before. The vocals were also more of a focus as we have had much
feedback throughout the years, specifically to get out of the one
dimensional realm. Kurt wanted the vocals to be more complimentary to
the overall tune feel, so he used many facets of his vocal abilities.
As with all Believer albums, this one is definitely unique.”

Stay tuned to MetalBlade.de for more information on Believer’s
upcoming album including album title and artwork, track listing, pre-

8th/11th of April 2011 via Metal Blade Records in Europe!

-Mortiis Reports In From European Tour

OSLO, NORWAY — With nearly four weeks of their European tour under
their collective belt, Mortiis is primed and ready to take on the next
three weeks of the trek.

Fans are reacting enthusiastically to Mortiis’ latest incarnation —
one which differs greatly from the Mortiis of the past. “It’s nothing
like what Mortiis used to be a couple of years ago,” says band
namesake Mortiis. “We pulled back and totally reinvented our sound,
both off and on stage. Even the old er stuff we play sounds new and

The metamorphosis of Mortiis has been continual throughout Mortiis
(the artist) and Mortiis (the band)’s careers. In its current form,
Mortiis shows a more aggressive side that still works cohesively with
the likes of electro-evil tour-mates Combichrist. “I really think the
fans are picking up on the common energy between the two bands,”
Mortiis adds.

Mortiis’ set focuses material from their latest release, PERFECTLY
DEFECT, and their upcoming release, THE GREAT DECEIVER, two sonically
diverse records that work in unison live. “We open and close the set
with TGD songs,” Mortiis explains. “The PD songs are in the middle of
the set and, I think, visually as well as sonically, it works very
well. The PD stuff has some really dynamic moments that I know work
very well visually. The TGD songs we play are just hard and in-your-
face, so there’s a lot of energy to feed from there.”

The tour has also already had the requisite mishaps that make a tour

“I think I broke (guitarist) Levi’s rib on the first show,” Mortiis
says. “He slipped and went down and I stomped him pretty good. Didn’t
really mean to but sometimes the adrenaline gets the better of me and
it just happened. I also knocked chip out of my tooth a few days ago,
which kinda sucks, but what can you do? It’s just all part of the
game, I guess.”

February 6, 2011 marked the loss of one of the world’s finest
guitarists as the incomparable Gary Moore was silenced by a heart
attack at age 58. To say this was devastating to me would be an
understatement, as I’ve been listening to Gary’s music for close to 30
years and count him as a primary influence on my guitar playing.

I first heard Gary back in 1982, a time when Van Halen was all the
rage and was generally regarded as the best of the best; among rock
fans back in that era (and to a lesser extent today), there was a
gunslinger mentality about who was the fastest, most awesome guitar
god and it was a common practice to be the first to discover new
players who could go head to head with Eddie, so when I heard Gary’s
solo spot before “End Of The World” I was soon singing his praises,
telling everyone who would listen: “You think Van Halen is good? You
gotta hear this guy!!!” I spent many a memorable evening partying with
friends to Gary’s early albums, my favorite of the bunch being 1984’s
VICTIMS OF THE FUTURE, a collection which showcased the range of
Gary’s talents, from the all-out metal of “Murder In The Skies” to the
melodic hard rock of “Hold On To Love” and one of the best rock
ballads ever, “Empty Rooms.”

I was fortunate to see Gary twice back in the ’80s, once at the ’84
Texxas Jam with Rush and Ozzy and also in ’87 on an incredible bill
with Y&T, Loudness, TNT, and Ace Frehley, and what shows they were,
both solidifying for me Gary’s reputation as a formidable live
performer. I have so many fond memories of listening to Gary,
especially during my college years — driving to and from school,
hanging out with friends, when I should have been studying — it may
be a cliche but his music really was a big part of the soundtrack to
my life.

As Gary reached the end of his 30s the music scene was changing, he
was no doubt feeling his age and was yearning to return to the music
of his youth, so he transitioned to a blues artist, and that is
probably what most people know him for now; it was his fiery rock
period from his days in Thin Lizzy to ’89’s AFTER THE WAR, however,
that spoke to me the most.

Apparently Gary had a dramatic effect on a lot of players who went on
to great things, as his influence can be heard in the styles of such
notable guitarists as John Sykes, John Norum, Vivian Campbell, Akira
Takasaki, Jake E. Lee, Paul Gilbert, Doug Aldrich, and many more. Gary
was unique in that he was versatile with an impressive number of
styles, including rock, hard rock, metal, fusion, pop, and blues, and
although known primarily as a guitarist, Gary was also an excellent
singer with a distinctive and soulful voice. Gary was truly a musician
who had it all — technique, great songs, originality and most
importantly, feel. No one will ever surpass Gary in his ability to
play with depth, taste, fire, and sensitivity.

So the world of music is poorer now without Gary in it, but we are
blessed to have his numerous recorded works to enjoy. Thanks for the
music and inspiration Gary, you’ll be sadly missed…

Healing Sixes are an Indianapolis, Indiana quartet who characterize
modern blues rock, drawing on classic influences such as The Allman
Brothers, Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, and Bad Company but combining
them with contemporary flavors for a rather unique sound. Don’t be
fooled by acoustic opener “Bluejay On The Wrenhouse,” as this one is a
relaxed country rock piece that wouldn’t sound out of place coming
from the Zac Brown Band; follow-up rocker “Fine Time” is more in
keeping with the band’s style, this one featuring fantastic soloing
from blues sensation Joe Bonamassa. Healing Sixes’ creativity comes
through on “Superhot,” a smoldering track with some quirky rhythmic
bits that elevate the song from the usual blues rock cliches, while
“Grass And Gasoline” draws you in with a wonderfully infectious
groove, the album ending on another mellow note with the relatively
bland “That’s Alright.” Interesting factoid: Jason Bonham played drums
for Healing Sixes for four years, touring with them and appearing on
their 2002 ENORMOSOUND album. Overall BLUEJAY is a worthwhile listen
for present-day blues rock aficionados, and should provide great
material for the live setting.

the X of the title and even with only seven cuts there is a lot here
of interest to explore and digest. The album gets off to a strong
start with “Edge Of The In Between,” a piece combining the
accessibility of ABACAB-era Genesis with clever arrangement and
creativity, followed by the excellent instrumental “Kamikaze,” a
virtuosic workout giving the guys a chance to show off their chops a
bit. You can’t have a prog album without some lengthy tracks and there
are several on display here, the best of which is the 17-minute epic
“From The Darkness,” a kind of old Deep Purple meets modern Rush
excursion that should have prog connoisseurs nodding in approval,
while closer “Jaws Of Heaven” ends things off on an emotional note.
This one took me a while to get into but I’m glad I took some time
with it, as it takes awhile to soak in all the little things the band
layers the music with. Not an immediate listening experience, but
ultimately a satisfying one…

Re: Gary Moore

I was totally blown away early on Sunday morning when I heard about
Gary Moore. I found out at 6 a.m. It kind of ruined my Super Bowl
Sunday (as a Packer fan). I was lucky enough to have seen him perform
three times when opened for Krokus and Def Leppard in 1983 at Alpine
Valley, for Rush in 1984, and finally as a headliner in 1987 at the
Metro where I interviewed him. Really cool and shy guy. I challenge
anyone to tell me they can’t find one recorded piece of his that they
don’t like.

I was really upset with Rupert Murdoch’s Sun in London who published
unsubstantiated reports that he choked on his own vomit. If that had
been the case, it would have come out in the initial autopsy. Here was
an excellent article that appeared today:

Gary Moore, IMHO, was the greatest guitar player in the world, and I
would put him above Clapton, who upon his death will receive front
page status. Gary Moore relegated to a few paragraphs… maybe. My
FOR COVER. He even played on some great Cozy Powell and Greg Lake solo
projects. His stuff in Colosseum II and Skid Row was also excellent.
Gary Moore wasn’t afraid to give any style of music a try, and usually
succeeded. He had a unique playing style that many emulated, even Kirk
Hammett from Metallica. As Gary told me in 1987, “You wouldn’t believe
the guitarists that pick up my guitars and cannot play them.” He used
amazingly heavy gauge strings, and his fingers became very strong.
This came from not being able to afford guitar strings when younger
and got used to playing with bass strings.

What I find amazing are the number of musicians that have been dying
of “natural” causes, and not going out in “rock n roll” style. Who’s
