-Double-LP Vinyl Version Of DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 To Be Issued By Niji Entertainment Group On February 15th

CD Version’s Success Dio’s Strongest Chart Debut In The “Soundscan Era”

The recently-released double-disc Dio CD, DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987, is about to get a glorious vinyl makeover. On February 15, 2011, the album will be issued as a double vinyl set with deluxe gatefold packaging, and on 180 gram vinyl — the first-ever Dio album to be released in this high quality vinyl format. The album was mixed and mastered under the supervision of Dio’s longtime engineer, Wyn Davis, and comes hot on the heels of the CD version’s success (debuting at #98 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart — Dio’s strongest chart debut in the “Soundscan era”).

The first disc of DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 was recorded at the first-ever UK performance by Dio’s solo group (while on tour supporting their classic debut, HOLY DIVER), and features guitarist Vivian Campbell. The set list does a superb job reflecting Dio’s debut (featuring such classics as “Rainbow In The Dark,” “Stand Up And Shout,” etc.), as well as classics from both Rainbow and Black Sabbath (“Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Heaven And Hell,” etc.) — resulting in a thorough retrospective of Dio’s career, from Rainbow to Black Sabbath to solo hits. The second disc of DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 features guitarist Craig Goldy’s debut — recorded in 1987, in support of the DREAM EVIL album, and contains further highlights from Dio’s career.

Between Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, the Dio social media followers now number over one million. The CD version of DIO AT DONINGTON has scanned over 43,000 in the the USA alone, and in the Sounscan era, Dio has scanned over 3,000,000 albums. THE VERY BEAST OF DIO was recently certified Gold in the USA, and sales are approaching 700,000 units. Also recently opened for business is the Official Dio Webstore, which gives fans worldwide the opportunity to purchase T-shirts, limited edition items, and CDs/DVDs that fans have been requesting.

2011 is shaping up to be a busy shopping year for Dio collectors, so stay tuned!

-Gotthard: “We Want To Carry On!”

After the tragic accident of their friend and singer Steve Lee, who died in the United States on 5th of October 2010, the musicians of the Swiss rock band Gotthard withdrew from the public towards the end of the year in order to take a break. Now they are back with plans for the future and to tackle a difficult task.

Quote from Leo Leoni: “… after the very emotional days following Steve’s death, it was important for all of us to come to terms with the pain, let the incident sink in and find ourselves again. So we got together at the beginning of the year and started considering the new situation … it was clear to all of us quite quickly, that it has to go on — GOTTHARD is not a job — GOTTHARD IS OUR LIFE!”

Quote from Hena Habegger: “… of course we can only continue if we are lucky enough to find the right man. For us, it is not just a voice that can bring our songs back to life… more precisely we are looking for a singer whose personality also matches ours — the Gotthard Family!”

The largest American wine competition in the world awards Warrant Red the Silver Medal!

This past week, a local wine, Warrant Red, created by Kristian Story and Erik Turner of the rock band Warrant, took the coveted Silver Medal in the most prestigious wine competition in the world, The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. When you take two forces of nature and bring them together good things are bound to happen. Bringing Napa Valley wine-maker Kristian Story together with Erik Turner of the rock band Warrant is one of those magical collaborations with amazing results: Warrant Red, a delicious new limited blend of Wine from Artistwine.com.

Kristian Story is a Napa Valley, California winemaker, who employs ancient winemaking techniques to create his hand-crafted, unfiltered and unrefined wines, fermented with French yeasts. Focused on the limited production of red Bordeaux varietals and small lots of Chardonnay, Merlot and Petite Sirah, Kristian believes the minimalist approach preserves and expresses the true varietal character of Kristian Story Wines. Warrant is an American Rock band from Hollywood, California that experienced success from 1989 – today with five albums reaching international sales of over 10 million. The band first came into the national spotlight with their debut album DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY STINKING RICH, and one of its singles, “Heaven,” reached #1 in Rolling Stone and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band continued its success in the 90s with the 2x Platinum album CHERRY PIE and the gold album DOG EAT DOG. The band continues to tour and record all around the US today.

The goal of combining Wine and Rock is to reach people and music fans in a new and different way. The Warrant Red wine has been a project with both Kristian Story and Erik Turner together. The wine has brought on a different way to share their passion for music and wine with both a new and old audience.

When asked about the wine, Erik Turner said that the wine is delicious and by drinking it you will become smarter, richer and better looking! “Seriously though,” he adds, “I am new to the wine world and when I tested and mixed the wines with Kristian Story I was blown away with what has now become Warrant Red.” We think it is great that the first wine we did has won such a prestige award.

No Gravity To Release Debut Album WORLDS IN COLLISION On March 18, 2011

Catalogue: LMC299 / EAN6419922002995
Format: CD / Digital Download

No Gravity are a new progressive power metal outfit and the brainchild of renowned guitarist Simone Fiorletta. Their debut release WORLDS IN COLLISION features some of the most illustrious vocalists in the power/prog metal field and sees release on Lion Music on March 18th, 2011.

Conceived in early 2010 from the ashes of Italian progressive metallers Moonlight Comedy, Simone Fiorletta’s intention was to enclose in a single album the best singers of the Power/Prog world with each track tailored for each vocalist’s individual style; and what a selection of vocalists No Gravity have enrolled!

With Andy Kuntz (Vanden Plas), Michele Luppi (Killing Touch, ex-Vision Divine), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody Of Fire, Vision Divine), Mark Basile (DGM), Roberto Tiranti (Labyrinth), and Emiliano Germani (Moonlight Comedy) providing the vocal angle this release makes a serious statement of intent from this new band.

The No Gravity lineup is completed by an equally skilled band. In addition to Simone Fiorletta’s virtuoso guitar work we have second guitarist Davide Perruzza, keyboardist Andrea De Paoli, bassist Andrea Casali, and drummer Marco Aiello who all form a formidable unit with instrumental prowess and the delivery to rival the genre’s big names.

The music for WORLDS IN COLLISION was entirely written and arranged by Simone Fiorletta whilst each track’s vocalists were given the task of composing their own lyrics and vocal melodies. The album was recorded, mastered, and mixed by Fiorletta at his studio; with the exception of the vocal tracks which were recorded at various studios of the singers own choice.

Stylistically WORLDS IN COLLISION includes many facets of modern Power/Prog Metal. There are moments of pure virtuosity but all the time there is the will of the song coming first and foremost. The listener will find numerous musical textures with moments of light and shade, dark and heavy themes and stunning musicianship which continue to reveal new depths on each subsequent listen. Yet No Gravity have managed to craft an album that is instantly listenable and despite the numerous vocalists the albums has its own distinct sound — ones that will appeal to fans of the leading names in prog/power metal as well as the more adventurous metal fan in general.

With WORLDS IN COLLISION No Gravity have produced a superb debut album and marks an exciting new chapter in the career of one of Italy’s most respected musicians.

-Sweden Rock Festival Update

Evergrey To Sweden Rock Festival 2011!

One of the most influential names on the Swedish metal scene is Gothenburg’s Evergrey. The band debuted in 1998 and their melodic, dark, political and technical metal increased its fanbase with every new release. Albums like IN SEARCH OF TRUTH (2001), RECREATION DAY (2003), and MONDAY MORNING APOCALYPSE (2006) are all modern metal classics. In May 2010, fans were shocked to find out that Evergrey had lost three of their five members. Obviously, the band’s future looked bleak. Thankfully, singer/guitarist/band leader Tom S. Englund and keyboard player Rikard Zander held their ground. Another strong lineup has made another strong album, called GLORIOUS COLLISION. Evergrey are back with a vengeance, making their return to SRF an event to look forward to for any and all metal fans.

Down To Sweden Rock — Only show In Sweden This summer!

A supergroup of musicians from the heavy ’90s scene, united by their desire to play raw, aggressive and sludgy metal. Down from New Orleans consists of singer Phil Anselmo (ex-Pantera), guitarists Pepper Keenan (ex-Corrosion Of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), drummer Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod), and “newbie” (joined in 1999) bassist Rex Brown (ex-Pantera). The band’s classic debut NOLA arrived in 1995, and they are currently working on their fourth album. Their releases may be few and far between, but Down is still recognized as one of the finest metal bands of our time. Regardless if you prefer “old-school” or “modern” metal, this is a SRF debut to look forward to.

The Brew To Sweden Rock This Summer!

In their native Britain, The Brew have become the biggest sensation in traditional blues rock of recent years. Singer/guitarist Jason Barwick, drummer Kurtis Smith, and the latter’s father (!) Tim on bass debuted in 2006. Musically, the Brew have been compared to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Troggs. The band’s third album A MILLION DEAD STARS arrived in 2010 and gave their career a major boost. They had already obtained cult status on the European underground scene because of their superlative live shows. If you’re into rock of the ’60s/’70s variety, the Brew will knock you off your feet.

-Falconer Finish Recordings On New Album ARMOD!

Swedish Folk Heavy Metallers Falconer have finished recordings for their long anticipated seventh studio album!

Eleven tracks in Swedish of which four will also be included as English versions for the limited first edition have been nailed down and once again the creation was done at King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque’s Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden during December and January. The recording and mixing process went smoother than ever before says the band, after finishing their new album.

Comments Falconer guitarist Stefan Weinerhall: “The album is embracing the Swedish folk music to a greater extent than before making it sound slightly more down to earth. The music spans from acoustic songs with cello, flute and fiddle to songs with blastbeats and really heavy riffing. As said before this is a ‘one-time-only’ album and does not define the future sound of Falconer, but it was about time to pay full notice to the influence that has always made us different. Now we have that out of our system!”

Some song titles include “O, Tysta Ensamhet,” “Svarta Ãnkan,” “Dimmornas Drottning,” “Herr Peder Och Hans Syster.”

Falconer is:
Mathias Bladh – vocals
Stefan Weinerhall – guitars
Jimmy Hedlund – guitars
Magnus Linhardt – bass
Karsten Larsson – drums

ARMOD will be released early June of 2011 via Metal Blade Records in Europe!

Steele The Latest Addition To Z Records’ Expanding Roster

Z Records are extremely pleased to announce the signing of L.A.-based melodic rockers Steele. The band released a self-titled debut via the now-defunct Alfa Brunette label in Japan during 1996, copies of which now sell for three-figure sums on eBay — they are that rare. After much searching Z Records finally located band leader Jeff Steele and a deal was inked during late January of this year. Head of Z Records Mark Alger explained, “During 1996 Z’s sister company was working for Kip Winger and a friend at the label he was signed to gave me a copy of Steele’s debut to listen to. Driving back from London to Liverpool I thought wow why isn’t this out over here. Fifteen years on Z Records will now unleash this fantastic album on the general public.”

Lead Guitarist and band leader Jeff Steele added a few words…

“I’m really stoked and happy that Mark managed to hunt me down, and that these songs are going to get a second chance. Even better, this time STEELE will be available to the whole world! Z Records knows this kind of music and knows the people who love it, so I’m really honoured to be part of this. I hope all you rockers out there will check out STEELE — my friends and I put a lot of love and hard work into it, and I believe you’ll find it worthy.”

The band’s album entitled TRICKS UP MY SLEEVE will be released with two bonus tracks on May 3rd.

-Anacrusis Reissue On Divebomb Records

Anacrusis formed during 1986 in St. Louis, MO. After their ANNIHILATION COMPLETE demo (1987) garnered instant critical acclaim (voted “best demo of 1987” by the readers of Metal Forces magazine), the band signed a two album deal with UK label, Active Records. The combo then released their debut and follow-up albums, SUFFERING HOUR and REASON, in 1988 and 1990, respectively. With their Active Records contract obligations fulfilled and momentum building, the band knew they needed a bigger marketing push behind them. It was no surprise when Anacrusis signed on with U.S. powerhouse Metal Blade Records. This was exactly the kind of label the band needed in their corner. Metal Blade eventually released Prog/Thrash/Power-Metal masterstrokes MANIC IMPRESSION (1991) and SCREAMS & WHISPERS (1993) — both releases are considered forward-thinking metal landmarks. Despite all the accolades the band received in 1993 they quietly disbanded following a European tour with Death.

After remaining dormant for more than 15 years, the band finally saw the release of its original ANNIHILATION COMPLETE demo in a limited edition CD/DVD set which included early video footage along with various demos and rehearsal clips. With public interest re-engaged and a new crop of younger fans discovering the band, Anacrusis accepted an invitation to perform at Germany’s Keep It True XIII festival the following year. With all of the original members in place — Kenn Nardi, Kevin Heidbreder, John Emery, and Mike Owen — Anacrusis decided to re-record their SUFFERING HOUR and REASON albums, and they have now been presented as the new HINDSIGHT collection.

The band originally pressed a limited number which sold out quite rapidly. So, Divebomb Records decided to work with the band on a second pressing with more widespread availability for fans who may have missed the original run.

“This is just a dazzling display of technicality fused with aggression that has to be heard to be believed.” – Hardrock Haven

“In short, they did it right — they didn’t go in and rewrite solos, make the lyrics ‘more mature,’ or try to tack on any 2010 insights onto 1988’s material. They went at it like they’d stepped outside in ’88 for a smoke break, got caught in a two-decade time warp, and then walked back into the studio for another take.” – Blabbermouth

“All in all, this re-recording unearths two excellent proggy Thrash albums once buried in poor production and youthful lack of restraint… This is one re-recording that is definitely worth having.” – Metal Crypt

“HINDSIGHT: SUFFERING HOUR & REASON (REVISITED) is — without a doubt — THE (as in BEST) underground re-release of the year!” – Stormbringer (Germany)

“Anacrusis was one of the most unique progressive thrash bands of their time… HINDSIGHT improves on all of the areas that needed work and otherwise stays faithful to the original songs.” – Sputnik Music

“If you are open to a barrage of influences, pretty surprising breaks and an extraordinary voice, then you are in the right place.” – Lords Of Metal

Band: Phi Yaan-Zek with Marco Minnemann

About Phi Yaan-Zek with Marco Minnemann

For his fourth solo album adventure DANCE WITH THE ANIMA, London based guitarist Phi Yaan-Zek teams up again with world renowned drummer Marco Minnemann (Paul Gilbert, Modern Drummer Cover star) and keyboard virtuoso Lalle Larsson (Agents Of Mercy, Karmakanic). The music is a dazzling film score style prog rock/fusion journey that has been skillfully composed to Marco Minnemann’s live unedited 51-minute drum solo. This CD is part of Marco Minnemann’s “Normalizer 2” series of releases which also includes albums by Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai), Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Alex Machacek, Jason Sadites, John Czajkowski, Mario Brinkmann, and Marco himself.

The challenge for the project was to write and record 51 minutes of music over Marco’s live improvised non-stop drums. The ground rules were that the drums were not to be edited in anyway, all the music had to fit with what Marco played and, ideally, make it seems like only this drum performance could go with this music and that each musician would not to allowed to listen to the other versions until they had completed their own.

Phi’s approach was to treat the drums in the same way as the pacing structure of a scene to a film with the end result being an album that has the depth, quality, and feel of a timeless movie soundtrack. It might seem at times that you’re in a the middle of a thrilling James Bond chase scene, but equally the music moves into David Gilmore style lyrical guitar playing, fiery gypsy jazz, dramatic neo-classical rock build-ups, weird Frank Zappa complexity, and Steve Vai-like munchkin playfulness.

Over the years Phi’s unique musical voice has made him much in demand both as a guitar player and composer, and as such he has recorded and performed with such inspirational musicians as Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai), Marco Minnemann, Bumblefoot (Guns N’ Roses), Bryan Beller (Steve Vai), Andy Edwards (Robert Plant, IQ), and Lalle Larsson (Karmakanic, Agents Of Mercy) whom he met in the early ’90s as a fellow student at the American Institute of Music in Vienna Austria.

-King Giant: New Video And Vinyl Release Available; Band Begins Work On New Album

Pimmit Hills, Virginia-based doomsters King Giant have just unveiled their new performance-based video. The second video from their 2009-released SOUTHERN DARKNESS full-length, this brand new visual portrayal of the track “Solace” was filmed at Washington, DC’s infamous 9:30 Club, and portrays the band boasting their soulful Southern rock in a thunderous live setting. The video was produced by Kevin Barker and Double Kick Productions, who also produced the first video from SOUTHERN DARKNESS, for the track “13 To 1,” released last September.

View both the brand new “Solace” video as well as the previously-released “13 To 1″ video at http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=2121 .

After self-releasing SOUTHERN DARKNESS in mid 2009, King Giant are now proud to announce the 12” vinyl version of the release! Also being self-released by the band, via their own Graveyard Hill Records imprint, the massive album is available in two color schemes [oxblood, and oxblood with gold/silver splatter], both pressed on quality 180-gram wax, bound in a deluxe gatefold setup, and including a free digital download card of the album as well. More details and ordering info is available via http://www.kinggiant.com/ now.

King Giant are in pre-production of their next album now. Few details are available as of now, but the album title is confirmed as DISMAL HOLLOW, and the band will begin recording in March for a release date later this Summer to be announced soon. King Giant played at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia last week where they previewed a bit of the new material for the first time, and were actually joined on stage by doom legend Victor Griffin (Pentagram, Place Of Skulls) to take part in the band’s cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “The Needle And The Spoon.”

More widespread touring and live appearances are imminent for the remainder of 2011; more details will be announced as they are confirmed throughout the year.

“…melodies and atmosphere inhabit that common ground among Alice In Chains, Eyehategod, and Hank III. The album title is apt.” – Decibel Magazine

“Unhealthy, doom-tinged southern filth.” – Terrorizer Magazine

“If Backwoods Payback, Earthride, Crowbar, Beaten Back To Pure and Down’s NOLA speak directly to your soul, then you’ll be doing back flips over SOUTHERN DARKNESS. This is riff after riff of gruff, Sabbath leaned southern-metal, with arrangements and vocals bathed from head to toe in soothing, sourmash sauce.” – Hellride Music

“If Johnny Cash rose from the grave and started a metal band this is what it might sound like. Folks, this is some serious sh*t.” – Heavy Planet

The Meads of Asphodel

Metal Hammer Magazine says, “elusive, eccentric, and very, very English, The Meads Of Asphodel have been warping the boundaries of black metal since their inception.” Live4Metal says, “their quirky Englishness, mixed with their flirtation with black metal and of course their crusty punk underbelly never fails to both amuse and impress.” Released January 11, THE MURDER OF JESUS THE JEW is now finally available for North American fans. This musical documentary is unlike any other you will hear this year. Definitely worth checking out!

Formed in 1998 by then-Emperor guitarist Samoth and drummer Trym Torsten (the duo teaming with Secthdamon and Destructor of Myrskog; Daemon from Limbonic Art appeared on one album), Zyklon quickly and permanently made a lasting mark on extreme metal. STORM MANIFESTO features previously unavailable material.

New Mexico’s Kryoburn finally make their return with their second album, THREE YEARS ECLIPSED. Five years separate this and their debut, ENIGMATIC EXISTENCE. Vocalist/guitarist Todd Brashear shares, “It took us a while to get this done. With all the changes we’ve had going on in the past couple of years, we had to find our legs again.” Produced by Tue Madsen (Dark Tranquillity, Moonspell), THREE YEARS ECLIPSED finds the band expanding their musical base, now adding progressive flairs to their intense metal sound. It is sure to peak the curiosity of new listeners. THREE YEARS ECLIPSED is available in stores now.

Announced late last year, Absu will share the stage with Immortal on six select American shows in mid-February. Band leader/drummer Proscriptor recently conducted an interview with Noisecreep and made comment regarding the band’s forthcoming album, ABZU. “We are working on the final touches. It’s composed and arranged. It’s the most maniacal collection of songs. It will include the standard topics I’ve discussed but we’re test driving a new kind of musical theme.” The band plan to enter the studio shortly after the completion of dates with Immortal and look for an autumn release. FALLEN will see North American release via Candlelight on April 5. The album is the second since Varg Vikernes’ release from prison. The album features seven new compositions, each adding another storied journey to the celebrated Burzum legacy. The album’s musical focus joins sounds of Burzum’s early releases with key elements of 2010’s BELUS. The striking and classical nature of the album’s cover art is new for Burzum. A special pre-order promotion will launch via Candlelight’s official webstore on February 15.

Ireland’s Cruachan are set to reignite the Pagan metal flame with the release of their new album, BLOOD ON THE BLACK ROBE. Set for release April 19, it is the band’s first new album in nearly four years. Founder/vocalist Keith Fay noted, “We are reborn,” on signing with Candlelight early August of 2010. “Returning to our musical roots, we hope to stamp our mark on what we started but also spearhead its revival.” BLOOD ON THE BLACK ROBE is a more urgent and darker recording. It features 11 new songs that both old and new fans can embrace. It features guest performance from former vocalist Karen Gilligan.

Scion Rock Fest

Candlelight is again proud to have performers at the upcoming Scion Rock Fest. -I’ve got a little Stratovarious contest for you. The band’s excellent new album ELYSIUM is out now on Armoury Records/earMUSIC, and I have a handful of promotional drop cards to give away. What the heck is a “drop card,” you ask? It’s a nifty, collectible little credit card-sized thingy with cool album artwork and a code that unlocks a free MP3 download of ELYSIUM’s opening track, “Darkest Hour,” and allows you to sign up for the band’s email newsletter. To try for one, just send me an email at Detritus-owner@yahoogroups.com with “Stratovarius” in the subject line, and your full name and mailing address in the body. I’ll take entries/submissions until February 16, and I’ll hand out the goodies while my supplies last. Thanks to the kind folks at Earsplit PR and Armoury Records for providing the drop cards.

-That is terrible news about Gary Moore. I don’t have much of his work in my collection, just a few of his pre-blues era solo releases, but I will always consider his duet with Phil Lynott on “Out In The Fields” (from 1985’s RUN FOR COVER) to be one of my favorite songs. We used to listen to “Led Clones” (from 1989’s AFTER THE WAR) a lot back in college, too, because we loved the way this duet with Ozzy ripped on Kingdom Come and Whitesnake (ha!), and I have to thank my friend Pete for turning me on to Moore’s cover of “Shapes Of Things.” R.I.P.

-I got a quicky preview of two tracks off of Stryper’s THE COVERING (thanks, Chipster!). Their version of Sabbath’s “Heaven & Hell” is pretty much straightforward and raw, with no real surprises, and I wonder if the rest of the disc’s covers will be in the same vein. And the new original, “God,” is totally awesome. It rocks hard and features some amazing guitar work from Michael Sweet and Oz Fox. I admit I was never a big Stryper fan but this track has me drooling at the thought of an all-new studio album sometime soon.

-I was reading through the February issue of the Illinois Entertainer and discovered two new Chicago-are cover bands. We now have an Accept tribute band, Breaker! About dang time; check out their Chicagoland debut on the 18th at the Penny Road Pub in South Barrington. Then there’s Maiden Chicago, whose ad has awesome visuals that goof on Iron Maiden’s SOMEWHERE IN TIME era, but with Chicago locales inserted; check them out at http://www.maidenchicago.com/ .

-Pretty cool to see Carmine Appice making those rarities available for cheap download. I’m curious to hear the “new” King Kobra song — very cool he’s donating proceeds to Dio’s charity, but is he *really* doing that band again??? — and the Mothers Army album.

-Have you seen that GE Biogas Technology commercial featuring the rock band “The Electric Cattle?” The band members are all cows. 🙂 It’s pretty funny. Search it out on YouTube or see Ecomagination.com for more.

-In my current playlist: Battlelore – DOOMBOUND (Napalm Records), Helstar – GLORY OF CHAOS (AFM Records), Creation’s End – A NEW BEGINNING (Sensory Records), Alexis – BIRDS OF PREY (Pitch Black Records).

ELYSIUM follows (relatively quickly… 18 months ain’t sooo long) on heels of POLARIS, and guitarist Matias Kupiainen is now firmly entrenched in Timo Tolkki’s old spot. He also produced the record and shared the bulk of the song writing with longtime vocalist Timo Kotipelto, and the infusion of young blood has done the band a lot of good. “Darkest Hours” starts off the album with a great, sparse groove and a big, catchy chorus and atmospheric Jens Johansson keyboards o’ plenty. “Under Flaming Skies,” “The Game Never Ends,” “Event Horizon,” and “Infernal Maze” are the requisite Strato-rockers, with the latter pair sticking out most due to some ferocious guitar/keyboard interplay and some nifty classically-themed lead work from Kupiainen. “Fairness Justified” and bassist Lauri Porra’s “Lifetime In A Moment” are both big, earthy, ominous lumbering hulks, and Johansson’s heartfelt “Move The Mountain” is a quality power ballad. The three-part, 18-minute epic title track closes the album on a bombastic note, chock full of powerhouse Kotipelto vocals and lengthy instrumental excursions. This is another strong record from Stratovarius; hopefully drummer Jorg Michael can put his bout with thyroid cancer behind him, and the band will have a big 2011 bringing ELYSIUM to the masses.
