-Hello and Happy New Year! We typically go on hiatus in December and return with a “year in review” thingy at the end of January. This time out we powered right through December with no hiatus, but I think we’re going to take one now. Not 100% sure yet though. In any case, we will have a review of 2010 before January ends. – Tim

-Stratovarius: A New Year Message From Jörg Michael; Band To Issue New Studio Record Later This Month

In an official message from Stratovarius drummer Jörg Michael, who was diagnosed this past fall with a form of thyroid cancer:

“Dear All,

“I hope this mail finds everybody well. The first leg of the European tour with Helloween is over — time to have a few words with you. First, let’s not forget the brilliant emergency rescue action and playing of Alex [Landenburg]. Thanks again for all what you did for the fans, the band and also for me. Surely I hate the idea of somebody sitting on ‘my chair’ but this special action needed some special treatment and I am proud and happy that it was you, Alex. Thanks again.

“I was overwhelmed by all the wishes, tons of emails and text messages I received from all over the world wishing me a speedy recovery. Thank you so much for supporting me. It made me feel very strong fighting these bastards inside of me.

“I have some good news to tell you and believe me — I really enjoy to tell the world: The surgery was done over six weeks ago and the first therapy is done as well. All looks good so far and as [keyboardist] Jens [Johansson] told me before: ‘Do not worry, Jörg. What should survive in your body after all that you did to him!’ Finally, he was right. There are only small bits and bobs left — I will fight those with another therapy [session] in about four months time. I think I’ve been very lucky that it was discovered by one of my friends in a very early state. Very good that my friend decided to become a doctor; he was very lousy when he tried playing the guitar.

“I’m currently practicing the drums to be ready and kicking again when the tour continues in the new year.

“I will be back. Thanks again for everything! See you in Paris and everywhere else……

“Best, Jörg Michael”

Finnish melodic metal troupe Stratovarius are readying to unleash their thirteenth studio album, ELYSIUM, later this month. Recorded at 5-By-5 studios in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland, the nine-track full-length will be released in the US and Canada January 18, 2011 through Armoury Records and features cover art by Gyula Havancsák.

-Onslaught: New Album Details

England may not be the first country that comes to mind when discussing thrash metal, yet, it’s hard not to think of Onslaught when mentioning legendary bands of the genre. POWER FROM HELL (1985) and THE FORCE (1986) have a well deserved place in the collection of any old school metal fanatic and the British quintet continues to release quality thrash records.

After a fifteen year hiatus, Onslaught returned in 2007 with the triumphant release of their KILLING PEACE full-length, featuring the high-speed thrash attack Onslaught was notorious for. The record was a fist in the face of anyone who deemed the Brits dead.

Now in 2010, a new chapter begins, as Onslaught are prepared to release their fifth studio album SOUNDS OF VIOLENCE. Due for North American release on February 8th, 2011 via Germany’s AFM Records — right in time to celebrate this cult band’s 25th anniversary — the album falls perfectly in line with KILLING PEACE, yet broadens the classic Onslaught style once again, helping the band maintain an original edge. Recorded and produced in the renowned Hansen-Studios (Destruction, Heathen, Mercenary), the blazing record boasts ten brand new original tracks, as well as a cover of Motörhead’s classic “Bomber,” featuring guest appearances by Phil Campbell (Motörhead) and Tom Angelripper (Sodom). View the “Bomber” video, studio footage from the recording of the album and more at http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=1930 .

Onslaught have confirmed a headlining European tour for this April as well as appearances on some of the biggest European festivals throughout the year, and are now devising a full North American tour for later in the year! Stay tuned for further updates on Onslaught all year long as they are confirmed.

-The Iron Maidens Fill In For A Snowed-In Paul Di’Anno & Company

Monday, January 3, 2011

The Iron Maidens, the world’s only female tribute to the legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden, saved the day at Brixton/Dive in Redondo Beach, CA on January 2. Original Iron Maiden frontman Paul Di’Anno and his band Icarcus Witch were scheduled to perform at Brixton/Dive that night but were snowed in on the California Grapevine coming from Santa Rosa, CA and were unable to make it to the venue in time. Rather than let the Di’Anno/Maiden fans leave disappointed the girls quickly rallied and went from spectators to performers in no time as four of the female band members who happened to be in the audience jumped on stage and delivered a ninety plus minute set of Iron Maiden classics as a four piece on backline thrown together from Brixton/Dive house gear and the opening band Ninth Circle’s equipment. Also lending a hand to help out was Motorhead’s Phil Campbell and original Anthrax singer Neal Turbin, who jammed with The Iron Maidens on some songs and made sure that the crowd left happy. The Iron Maidens in attendance and on stage were Kirsten “Bruce Chickinson” Rosenberg, Linda “Nikki McBURRain” McDonald, Wanda “Steph Harris” Ortiz and Courtney “Adriana Smith” Cox.

-Metal Blade Records Inks Deal With Legendary Heavy Metal/Doom Group Pentagram; New Album LAST RITES Set For Spring 2011 With A Live DVD To Follow! European Dates Announced!

Metal Blade Records is proud to announce the signing of legendary doom metal act Pentagram. The band, now entering their 40th year anniversary, will be releasing a full-length album titled LAST RITES in the spring of 2011 featuring all new tracks with a DVD to follow in late 2011. The doomed duo of Bobby Liebling & Victor Griffin has united once again to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Pentagram! Spring 2011 will bear witness to the revered pair’s first studio album together in 17 years. Only days out of the sessions, the band will unleash these newborn heavies live! Monstrous new riffs and more will be freed the nights of January 6th, at Europa in NYC and January 7th, at Club Hell in Providence, RI. Also playing live with the band will be Pentagram alumni and current full-time bass player Greg Turley with Tim Tomaselli (Place Of Skulls) filling in on drums.

Bobby Liebling comments on working with Metal Blade Records: “I reflect on how Pentagram is coming into its 40th year and how it finally feels like we are entering into the major leagues. With Metal Blade now at our side, it feels like we made the World Series! I’ll quote John Lennon from ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ and ask the loyal rivetheads out there, ‘Did we pass the audition?'”

Victor Griffin adds; “Neither Bobby nor myself ever imagined we’d play together again. It’s an honor to be re-united and celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pentagram, and the 30th anniversary of our musical relationship with a new album on Metal Blade Records! As always, we did it our way, thanks for making us survivors!”

“I am very excited to welcome Pentagram to the Metal Blade Family. It is really amazing for us to work with such a legendary band and we look forward to a great success!” comments Chairman/CEO of Metal Blade Records, Brian Slagel.

Cult rock legend Bobby Liebling has been churning out genre defining and highly admired hard rock/doom metal for over 40 years with Pentagram. Within its first decade, the band is largely regarded as co-creating two subgenres of hard rock. Heavy Metal at the birth of the 1970s and Doom towards its death.

The classic DEATH ROW-era lineup and the band’s debut album, RELENTLESS (1984) was inducted into Decibel Magazine’s Hall of Fame in 2010. Guitarist Victor Griffin’s invention of the “Drop B” tuning is first heard here. This heavy-handed hallmark went on to influence handfuls of players and defined a subgenre. These numbers recently included Jack White and his band The Dead Weather who cover “Forever My Queen” (Liebling) live. It was also played on late night talk shows worldwide and even released as a single on White’s own Third Man Records.

Pentagram have also announced a bunch of European dates for April!

The song comes off the band’s second full-length album, BLACK RIVERS FLOW, due on January 28/31 via Metal Blade Records in Europe. The CD was recorded in July and August 2010 at Belle City Sound with Chris Wisco and was mixed and mastered by James Murphy at Safehouse Production.

BLACK RIVERS FLOW track listing:

1. American Dreams
2. The Ultimate Sacrifice
3. The Strong Prevail
4. Black Rivers Flow
5. Casting Forward
6. Light A City (Up In Smoke)
7. Through Your Eyes
8. Beneath The Waves Of Hatred
9. Eternal Vengeance

Lazarus A.D. bassist and lead vocalist Jeff Paulick comments: “First off, I have to say we are incredibly proud of BLACK RIVERS FLOW. It’s been three and a half years since we recorded our last album and we’ve grown a lot since then.

“During the writing process for BLACK RIVERS FLOW, we were dealing with great personal tragedies. We found a way to draw strength from those tragedies and use it as inspiration to write what we feel is an incredibly more sound record than the last.

“On BLACK RIVERS FLOW, everyone stepped up their game; the riffs are heavier, the choruses catchier, and the vocals have improved and been diversified tenfold.

“We are on a mission to show the world that we are a force to be reckoned with and aren’t thinking about a trend, we’re thinking long-term.

“I think our fans will hear these songs and be blown away. The energy and power this time around is undeniable, and we hope the reaction amongst the community reflects just that.”

Jeff Paulick – Bass/Lead Vocals
Dan Gapen – Lead Guitar / Vocals

-Led Zeppelin 2, Featuring Yakuza’s Bruce Lamont, To Kick Off North American Tour This Friday!

Led Zeppelin 2, the cover band featuring bassist Chris Klein, drummer Ian Lee, guitarist Paul Kamp and vocalist Bruce Lamont, will ring in the new year with a North American tour set to kick off this Friday! The flashbacks will commence in Chicago with two dates at the House Of Blues on January 7 and 8. The band will then wind through nearly a month’s worth of dates before drawing to a close on February 12 in Denver at The Gothic Theatre.

Led Zeppelin 2 brings you the excitement of Led Zeppelin “In Concert” by re-enacting the live improvisation and onstage interaction that earned Led Zeppelin their legendary status for performing. Rather than a “greatest hits” show, you get to experience Zeppelin as Zeppelin would have played live in front of an audience. LZ2 sold out venues across the U.S. in 2010 and have drawn rave reviews for a “spot-on” Zeppelin show, playing deep cuts and classic tracks from the entire catalog, and occasionally entire Led Zeppelin performances from specific dates.

Most widely recognized for his saxophone and vocal work fronting Chicago’s Yakuza, Bruce Lamont has contributed to a plethora of other projects including Bloodiest (featuring members of 90 Day Men, Sterling), Circle Of Animals (with Sanford Parker, Minsk/The High Confessions) and Sick Gazelle (with Eric Block and Sanford Parker). He’s also recorded with Sigh, East West Blast Test, Minsk, Nachtmystium, Rabid Rabbit, Brutal Truth, Cephalic Carnage, Sweet Cobra, Locrian, Hex Machine and more.

Commented Lamont of the upcoming Led Zeppelin 2 dates: “I never thought back when we started Led Zeppelin 2, for fun mind you, that we would ever embark on a full U.S. tour. I am really excited to do it. It’s an honor and a pleasure to sing and perform some of the greatest music ever made.”

Led Zeppelin 2 – 2011 North American Tour Dates:
1/07/2011 House Of Blues – Chicago, IL
1/08/2011 House Of Blues – Chicago, IL

2/12/2011 Gothic Theatre – Denver, CO

To purchase tickets, visit: http://www.ledzeppelin2.com/tour.html (for individual venue links) or visit Live Nation at http://www.livenation.com/ .

“Guitarist Paul Kamp does an admirable job keeping up with Page’s dazzling fretwork, but there’s no question that Robert Plant stand-in Bruce Lamont is the star of the show. As he howls over classic-rock gems, you’d never guess he’s also one of the city’s most daring improvisers, blowing sax through a delay pedal or shredding his throat with art-metallers Yakuza.” – Timeout Chicago

“As good a Zep as Zep ever did back in the day.” – Chicago Sun Times

-MetalSucks Launches The Amon Amarth Viking Beard Contest — Grow Some Gnarly Hair; Win A Rad Prize Pack!

In conjunction with the release of Amon Amarth’s SURTUR RISING full-length, slated for release this March via Metal Blade Records, MetalSucks has launched the official Viking beard contest! Inspired by the magnificent mane of vocalist Johan Hegg, the contest will run from now until the record’s release date and be judged by the folks at MetalSucks and the band.

For the boys:

Step 1) Send MetalSucks a completely clean-shaven picture of yourself NOW — before Tuesday, January 11th at 11:59 p.m. EST — holding up a sign that says “MetalSucks” and the date. Send all entries to news [at] metalsucks [dot] net with the subject AMON AMARTH Viking Beard Contest.

Step 2) Grow a beard.

Step 3) On March 29th, the day SURTUR RISING is released, send team MetalSucks a new picture of yourself… same deal: Hold up a sign with “MetalSucks” and the date, only this time you’ll also need to write a secret passcode on your sign that will be revealed on MetalSucks on March 29th.

For the ladies:

The same as above, but for your armpits or leg hair! MetalSucks will be choosing one male winner and one female winner, both with an identical prize pack, so the playing field is equal for everyone.

Prize packs include:

A lock from Johan Hegg’s beard, the “super duper fan edition” of SURTUR RISING (of which only a limited number will be made), a drumhead signed by the whole band and more…

For additional info, visit the official contest page:

SURTUR RISING marks Amon Amarth’s eighth studio release and undoubtedly one of 2011’s most anticipated albums by fans and critics alike. SURTUR RISING is the follow-up to the highly acclaimed 2008 release, TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD, which landed the #7 spot in Revolver Magazine’s Top 20 Albums of 2008 and what MetalSucks called a “bottomless gauntlet of riffs that the band endlessly takes gargantuan swigs from, sounding both lush and emotive as well as skull crushingly heavy… every goddamn one is a chest-beating anthem.” Outburn declared how TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD “will render you nothing short of ecstatic” and Time Out New York noted that “Amon Amarth plays some of the most unabashedly epic metal you’re likely to find these days.”

Further details on SURTUR RISING to come. Stay tuned.

-Sons Of Tonatiuh: U.S. Tour To Commence Today!

Atlanta sludge slingers, Sons Of Tonatiuh, are set to kick off their fourth U.S. tour today in support of their self-titled debut full-length. The band will hit Stay True Tattoo in St. Augustine, Florida tonight with Hollow Leg and pillage its way through more than a week’s worth of dates before winding down in Jackson, Tennessee at Fishguts Farm. Sons Of Tonatiuh will be joined by several bands throughout the trek including Hot Graves, Death Before Dying, Car On Fire, Cognitive Dissonance, Currents and Black P*ssy.

Said the band in a collective statement: “The life expectancy of this planet in terms of the human mind is infinite. We are small minded parasites devouring a dirtball of filth. Traveling through time it is our ancestors that knew the true meaning of life and the consequences of our actions. The final plague will soon wash over us all. Sons Of Tonatiuh is part of that plague. We tour to incite riots. Let the riots begin…”

The band — drummer Tim Genius, guitarist/vocalist Dan Caycedo, bassist Mike Tunno and guitarist/vocalist Darby Wilson — unleashed their debut via Michigan’s Hyodro-Phonic Records earlier this year. Engineered by Jay Matheson (Kylesa, Black Tusk, Dark Castle) at the legendary Jam Room Studios in Columbia, South Carolina, the devouring eight-track long player features the artwork of Rodney Githens and is available on CD as well as blue and gold-colored wax.

1/14/2011 The Doom Room – Vicksburg, MS w/ Black P*ssy, Currents
1/15/2011 Fishguts Farm – Jackson, TN

“Take the buzzsaw riffage of more recent Darkthrone and the piss ‘n malt liquor of Eyehategod, with some decidedly pissed off black metal vocals, and change tempos frequently. You’ve got yourself a solid eight-song, 35 minute debut.” — Hellbound

“…a merciless onslaught of down-tuned misanthropic riffs…” — BrooklynVegan

“A killer album of sludgy goodness, this comes recommended for those who dig Eyehategod, Iron Monkey, Sourvein, and their ilk, but are burnt out on copy cat bands. These guys bring something different to the table with each song, and for that, I commend them.” — Fuzzrock

This interesting prog rock excursion comes to us via Poland’s Votum, a six man outfit cut from the cloth of bands such as Opeth, Pocupine Tree and Riverside. I’ll tell you straight out, if you are looking for lots of crushing, heavy guitar work you won’t find much on METAFICTION, Votum instead preferring to create their pensive, rather somber offerings with an abundance of expressive keyboards and plaintive vocals. The band do wade into metal territory on “Glassy Essence” and “Stranger Than Fiction,” but it is obvious their talent lies in creating evocative soundscapes, a good case in point being “Indifferent,” which brings to mind some of Dream Theater’s quieter moments. To me this is the type of music you can’t really extract individual songs from, more an album to put in and let play, especially when you are in a particularly wintry mood. In summary, well-played prog without the usual metal trappings, from a band worth watching…

Many of you are familiar with Scott “Wino” Weinrich whose music career has spanned across decades. But what you may not have known was that he recently released a solo album which is strictly just his voice and an acoustic guitar. Apparently, fans of his have been demanding such a stripped down, basic album, so if you are one such fan, you’ll be very pleased with Wino’s release of ADRIFT. This is his second solo album, which also follows the tragedy that Wino suffered after losing his friend and bandmate Joe Blank. So it is easy to imagine this album having a higher emotional potency. The heartstrings will be a-tuggin’. His record label was quick to compare Wino’s heavy-hearted album and simplistic style of performance as being tantamount to Bob Dylan, Woody Nelson and Neil Young — deifying him among some of America’s greats. It always irks me to see such arrogant comparisons. It is clear that Wino aspires to be like the aforementioned heroes. The lonesome-looking man with the single, harrowing power of the acoustic guitar accompanying the voice has been done before. The entire album reminded me of a modern day country album rather than anything to be considered rock or metal. I appreciate ingenuity and diversity within metal. But there comes a point where is completely ceases to be anything recognizable as metal or rock, and that is the case with ADRIFT. Wino proves with this album that his musical capabilities are limitless. However, he will doubtless lose some of his metalhead fans with this album. But that is always the risk one takes when they create such a different album. For people that enjoy Johnny Cash inspired music, you may find this album to your liking. As for me, a dedicated hard rock and heavy metal fan, I found the album listless and shaded too heavily in saturnine tones. The latter is not necessarily a bad thing, but it adds to making the album seem tiresome. I think you have to be in a certain downtrodden mood to get into the album.
