-Sweden Rock Updates

[Note: This is compiled from several updates. – Tim]

Sweden Rock Cruise: April 7-8, Stockholm
Sweden Rock Festival: June 8-11, Solvesborg

Electric Boys To Play On The Sweden Rock Cruise!

One of the most popular on the ’90s Swedish rock scene, Electric Boys, have been confirmed for the Sweden Rock Cruise, set to sail from Stockholm on April 7-8.

Electric Boys reached almost instant domestic stardom with the 1989 debut album FUNK-O-METAL CARPET RIDE, much thanks to the funk influences that set them apart from their competitors. Seemingly on the verge of a major international breakthrough, the band disbanded after releasing only two more albums, GROOVUS MAXIMUS (1992) and FREEWHEELIN’ (1994). Fifteen years later they finally reunited in the spring of 2009. Their long awaited comeback album will be released in March, so we should get to hear both old and new songs when the original lineup of Conny Bloom, Andy Christell, Niclas Sigevall, and Franco Santunione boards the M/S Silja Galaxy in April!

Lineup so far:

Electric Boys

Four more bands are to be announced!

More info on the Sweden Rock Cruise can be found here: http://www.swedenrockcruise.com/

Legendary The Cult To Sweden Rock!

To the alternative rockers, they are the post-punk band with the hit “She Sells Sanctuary.” To the headbangers, they are the creators of some of the rawest and toughest albums in traditional hard rock in the late ’80s, ELECTRIC (1987) and SONIC TEMPLE (1989). The Cult is equally legendary in both camps. The duo of Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar) have been the undisputed leaders of the band since its formation in 1983, and Astbury’s Jim Morrison-like vocals are a defining characteristic of their sound. For a while, the vocalist was actually a member of a revived The Doors. However, in 2007 Astbury declared that he would once more focus full-time on his own musical heritage with The Cult. And in 2011 the wait will finally be over — the band behind such songs as “Fire Woman,” “Love Removal Machine,” and “Lil’ Devil” debuts at SRF.

Whitesnake To Sweden Rock

Even in the early ’80s Whitesnake were successful in Europe, and lead singer David Coverdale had of course been triumphant in Deep Purple earlier still. Then Whitesnake released 1987 and were promoted to international superstars. The album became one of the ’80s’ most successful with its powerful hybrid of blues rock and aggressive so called hair metal. Hits like “Still Of The Night” and “Here I Go Again” made rock history and audiences flocked to attend the grandiose live performances. For the better part of the ’90s, Whitesnake was on hiatus, only to reform in 2002 to thunderous acclaim from overjoyed fans. Each of the band’s SRF performances has been a tremendous success, and when they now return, on popular demand, they also have a special surprise in store. We’re not just thinking of the coming album, the successor of the hit-record GOOD TO BE BAD (2007). No, we’re mostly referring to certain very special guest performers. We won’t reveal who — let’s just say that any fan of Whitesnake will be very thrilled to see them. If you are one of them, you definitely do not want to miss this concert.

Mr. Big To Sweden Rock Festival 2011!

One of the few melodic hard rock bands to thrive in the “alternative” ’90s was Mr Big. The acclaimed super-group consisted of four highly respected, brilliant musicians — Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Pat Torpey (drums). The ingenious music was quite similar to Van Halen’s, and songs like “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy” and, of course, ballad/mega-hit “To Be With You” became classics. Fans were overjoyed when Mr. Big reunited in 2009 after a seven-year split. The band promptly demonstrated that they were still an exceptional live act, and this January will see the release of their comeback album WHAT IF. Mr. Big are back, and they’re on fire — now their SRF debut is coming up as well.

Clutch Finally To Sweden Rock!

Maryland’s Clutch is the modern masters of creating traditional rock with bizarre elements. Punk, blues, funk, hardcore and stoner are some of the ingredients in the highly distinctive concept that the band has patented during 20 years and on nine studio albums — among other things. The lyrics are signified by an eccentric humor and a deep interest in anything from ancient myths to contemporary politics. Such records as FROM OBLIVION TO BEALE STREET (2007) and most recently STRANGE COUSINS FROM THE WEST (2009) have earned Clutch a fanatically devoted following and also made the band critics’ faves. Many have yearned to see this talented live act at SRF — now the time has come at last.

From Jacksonville, Florida: Legendary Molly Hatchet To Sweden Rock Festival!

Molly Hatchet from Jacksonville, Florida, established themselves in the ’70s as the hardest band in Southern rock. None other than Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist Ronnie Van Zant exclaimed that Molly Hatchet sounded exactly like he wanted Lynyrd Skynyrd to sound. Molly Hatchet hit major league status even with their first two albums MOLLY HATCHET (1978) and FLIRTIN’ WITH DISASTER (1979), and the latter’s title track remains the band’s biggest hit to date. Through their long career, they’ve had their share of problems, including the passing of two original members. Nevertheless, the current Molly Hatchet, centered around founder Dave Hlubek (guitar) and long-time members Phil McCormack (vocals) and Bobby Ingram (guitar), keeps on rocking — to the delight of their many faithful fans.

-Pegazus Honours Philip Lynott!

This upcoming January 4, 2011 we remember the 25th anniversary of the passing of Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott. The Australian Heavy Metallers of Pegazus would like to contribute to keep the memory of this legendary rocker alive. Therefore, they have decided that on January 4 their song “Ballad Of A Thin Man” will be available for free download at the following location:

The song “Ballad Of A Thin Man” has been taken from Pegazus’ album THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN, which was released in 2002 through Nuclear Blast.

Founding member of the band and songwriter/singer of the song Johnny Stoj about Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy and “Ballad Of A Thin Man:” “The Pegazus song ‘Ballad Of A Thin Man’ was written just over 10 years ago around the middle of the year 2000. A month before that we were asked by our record label if we would like to contribute a cover song of Thin Lizzy for an upcoming tribute album, so of course we said yes and ended up recording ‘Warriors’ and submitted that for the tribute CD.

“But after recording that cover song, it actually dawned on me that we needed to do something that was more than just covering a Thin Lizzy song, I mean this is a band that all of us in Pegazus grew up listening to as huge fans, and the inspiration and influence that I personally got as a songwriter and musician myself just from listening to Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott’s songs was indescribable. That’s when I knew that I had to create an original song that was a real tribute and a form of true respect for one of the world’s greatest ever rock n’ roll heroes.

“The music in ‘Ballad Of A Thin Man’ is meant to capture the typical Lizzy attitude with the riffs and twin guitar harmonies and the lyrics were simply created into an original story made from Thin Lizzy’s song titles and some of Phil’s cool song characters like Johnny The Fox and Jimmy The Weed.

“The very first demo version of this song was actually sent to Ms. Philomena Lynott back in 2000 and the response I personally got back in letter was ever so praiseful for the song, even suggesting that, ‘If Philip were alive he would love it too,’ put simply, I was so happy and over the moon.

“Anyway, the song wasn’t meant to be released as a Pegazus song but our record label at the time insisted strongly that it be included on our band’s studio album that we were also recording at that time, so it was released officially on our album THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN in 2002.

“So many years have passed since and so many requests still to hear the song have surfaced again, so we have decided that seeing that it is a special moment ahead this coming 4th January 2011, it’s the 25th anniversary of Philip’s passing and a celebration of his life.

“We would love to share this special tribute song of ours with all fans of Philip Lynott, Thin Lizzy and just rock fans in general with this absolute free download of ‘Ballad Of A Thin Man.’

“Enjoy the tune, rock hard and remember to raise a glass in memory of Philip, ‘The Emerald Isle’s Rocking Renegade!'”

Earlier, it was already reported that Pegazus will kick off their worldwide 2011 tour at the Rocktower Festival in Lübeck Germany (April 23/24, 2011) and that they had been added to the 2011 edition of Headbangers Open Air, which takes place from July 28 – 30 in Brande-Hörnerkirchen, Germany.

In addition, the worldwide return of the band will be kicked of with the release of a new album! The tentative release date for this yet-untitled album is scheduled for Spring 2011 and contains 11 brand new classic Heavy Metal songs with original singer Justin Fleming back on vocals!

Marionette Signs Worldwide Publishing Deal With Warner/Chappell

Gothenburg Sweden based metal sextet Marionette has signed a worldwide publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music Scandinavia (Meshuggah, Sabaton). The band is currently mixing its as-of-yet-untitled third album with Pontus Hjelm (Dead By April) at Studio PH in Gothenburg Sweden.

Commented by Warner/Chappell Music Scandinavia’s Sanken Sandqvist: “Sweden has continued to produce quality metal acts for over twenty years now. But Marionette stands out above all for its focus on creating quality metal that is innovative and unconventional, while putting on an excellent, interactive, live show that is above and beyond what most bands with dudes in jeans and T-shirts can do in concert. We look forward to working with these young guys from Gothenburg and helping them grow to new heights.”

Guitarist, backing vocalist, and founding member Aron Parmerud added: “We are proud to announce that we have signed with Warner/Chappell for publishing our previous two albums and our future material. This worldwide deal will give us the support of one of the worlds largest publishing companies, allowing us to focus on creating new and innovative music, which has been our goal since 2005.

“Everyone at the Marionette camp has been 100% focused on the mixing of our third album, which is occurring (as I type) at Studio PH with Pontus Hjelm. This album is by far our most mature release to date; there are a lot of new elements we are introducing to the Marionette sound. We expect to turn a lot of heads with this release, and so far the response to the new material we played live on our ‘The SlaughTour 2010’ headline tour of the UK and dates with Dark Tranquillity earlier this year was received extremely well both by Marionette fans and people who have never seen or heard us before. After our album is mastered in January we look forward to getting back on the road and sharing more new material with everyone who sees us live next year. Some titles of tracks on the album are ‘Something Forgotten,’ ‘Remember Your Name,’ ‘Stand In Line,’ and ‘Lights Out.'”

Marionette recently concluded its “The SlaughTour 2010” UK headline tour and Scandinavian dates supporting Dark Tranquillity: the first tour dates featuring new vocalist Alexander Andersson (Eldrimner) who joined the band in the spring. Swedish death metallers As You Drown commenced writing material for the band’s as of yet untitled sophomore album to be released next year via Metal Blade Records worldwide. The follow-up to REFLECTION will be recorded at the bands own AYD Studio in Borås Sweden. The band recently commented on the new material and the writing process:

“Since coming home from our tour with Vader and Divine Chaos earlier this year, we’ve been working hard on some new material. Right now we’ve got our sights set on recording some time in the spring, which means the record will hopefully be out in the early fall. The material is sounding very promising/menacing so far, so prepare yourselves for a tidal wave of death metal insanity coming your way…

“Also, we’re obviously looking to do some serious touring in 2011, stay tuned for dates. We pretty much can’t wait to get this beast back on the road and we expect to see all of you crazy f*ckers out there!”

As You Drown’s debut album REFLECTION was released in July 2009 via Metal Blade worldwide. As with BUZZOV•EN’s previous 2010 mini-tours in October and earlier this month, the band’s classic lineup from their AT A LOSS LP lineup of Kirk Fisher on guitar and vocals, “Dixie” Dave Collins (Weedeater, Bongzilla, etc.) on bass and vocals, and Ramzi Ateyeh (Sourvein) on drums, now also includes Sleepy Floyd (Sourvein) on second guitar.

Following their inception in 1990, BUZZOV•EN quickly created an impact on the metal scene with their harsh, raging style of sludge, cementing them as both a purveying act of the genre. After disbanding in 1999, the group revamped things and reformed in 2010, bringing their chaotic and caustic live rage back to the stage. BUZZOV•EN will appear at The Netherlands’ annual Roadburn Festival in April, as well as this year’s installment of the Maryland Death Fest in May, and will have much more news to announce throughout the new year.

Need some more grime, punk and down-tempo in your musical diet? Sons Of Tonatiuh will satiate your esoteric cravings. By those three choices of description for the band, my curiosity was piqued. Grime? And hasn’t punk been dead for some time now? Or could this be an up-and-coming band trying their hand at re-invention and ingenuity? The band hasn’t been around for too long, forming in 2008 — and as the band wants you to be aware of — by the side of dirt road in Atlanta. They’ve been busy little bees, writing and recording demos and even managing some touring time. SONS OF TONATIUH is their first full-length album. Now the band says the concepts underlying the band are “recognizing where we as a human race came from, what it means to be immortal, and how important it is to understand the history of the native world.” Sounds about standard as far as concepts go. At least there are concepts. As far as the sound goes for this album, I could see metalheads getting into it. It feels like Sons Of Tonatiuh have concocted a new breed of metal, and are just labeling at grime/punk/down-tempo just to give it name. The album opens with “To The Throne,” to the click of the drums, and a second behind it, the guitars wail in. Definitely down-tempo. The ambiance is sludgy and doom metal-esque. But the vocals are nothing what you would expect after an opening like that. They’re screeching and shrieking and sound a little drowned out by the instrumentation. And this is the vocal style used throughout the duration of the album. Some of the screams seem well-placed, but other times it sounds like crazy, rushed shrieking. The album has a “low-quality production” feel to it, which I’ve never been a fan of. Yeah, yeah, some people think it’s nostalgic or a tribute to the old days. Other people think it’s artistic. But I think it takes away from the songs. “Den Of Thieves” is the next offering and it follows the same train of style as the first track. It could almost be stoner metal. But the vocals tell you differently. Some of the drumming feels tribal. Further into the album, the song “Oracle” moves even slower than the rest; more like the pace of a funeral. The band has talent, but I think they tried too hard to make their sound unique and wound up with something not exactly aesthetically pleasing to the ear. For the most part, the vocals are indecipherable, so whatever cool concepts they were trying to convey are lost amid the cacophony. Even with calling themselves grime/down-tempo/punk, their sound isn’t anything new. But fans of this type of music should like this. For a relatively novice band, this is a solid album. It just needs some creative tweaking.
