-Double-LP Vinyl Version Of Dio – AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 To Be Issued By Niji Entertainment Group!

The recently-released double-disc Dio CD, AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987, is about to get a glorious vinyl makeover. On February 15, 2011, the album will be issued as a double vinyl set with deluxe gatefold packaging, and on 180 gram vinyl — the first-ever Dio album to be released in this high quality vinyl format. The album was mixed and mastered under the supervision of Dio’s longtime engineer, Wyn Davis, and comes hot on the heels of the CD version’s success (debuting at #98 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart — Dio’s strongest chart debut in the “Soundscan era”).

The first disc of AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 was recorded at the first-ever UK performance by Dio’s solo group, while on tour supporting their classic debut, HOLY DIVER. And the set list does a superb job reflecting Dio’s debut (featuring such classics as “Rainbow In The Dark,” “Stand Up And Shout,” etc.), as well as classics from both Rainbow and Black Sabbath (“Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Heaven And Hell,” etc.) — resulting in a thorough retrospective of Dio’s career, from Rainbow to Black Sabbath to solo hits. The second disc of AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 features guitarist Craig Goldy’s debut — recorded in 1987, in support of the DREAM EVIL album, and contains further highlights from Dio’s career.

Between Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, the Dio social media followers now number over one million. Also recently opened for business is the Official Dio Webstore, which gives fans worldwide the opportunity to purchase T-shirts, limited edition items, and CDs/DVDs that fans have been requesting.

2011 is shaping up to be a busy shopping year for Dio collectors, so stay tuned!

-Avantasia DVD To Be Released In Spring 2011!

Rumors keep circulating about a forthcoming Avantasia live DVD and now we can confirm they are true! Early next year a double-DVD and 2-CD set will be out on Nuclear Blast Records (in Japan and East Asia on Avalon-Marquee). The DVD is a documentary of the legendary 2008 world tour of Avantasia, when the band hit the road for the first time to write a new chapter in Metal history; traveling around the world with a giant all-star ensemble to bring the Metal Opera on stage and play on three continents within a few days, crossing the dateline and eventually playing to a total of 400,000 people within only a few weeks. The first DVD contains a live concert with a running time of almost two hours featuring footage filmed at the headlining shows of Wacken Open Air (Germany) and Masters Of Rock (Czech Republic). On the second DVD there will be a movie “Around The World In 20 Days” that gives fans the opportunity to join Avantasia backstage and take a look at the surroundings and the thrill behind the scenes that go along with an extensive undertaking such as this. The DVD set will portray Avantasia 2008 when it all started.

Tobias says: “I am so proud of this DVD package and the featured footage, even though it took a little longer to finally complete it. It gives people an idea of what an impact the first appearance of Avantasia on stage had, and you will get an idea of how everything went beyond our expectations and what the roots and the seeds for the current Avantasia tour are. It portrays one year in Avantasia’s history, maybe the most important year in the project’s history because that is when a studio-project became a traveling institution. There are many Metal Operas, but we made it something real, something to take hold of. Something alive…”

The finishing touches are being put on the mastering right now, so the DVD will be out in spring 2011. It will be available as a double 2-DVD, a double live CD, and a box set featuring both. Stay tuned for more information!

-Hurtsmile: The Latest From Gary Cherone And His Band Of “Brothers” To Release Their Debut Album

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of Hurtsmile’s self-titled debut album on January 21, 2011 in Europe and February 8, 2011 in the US.

Hurtsmile is a new band featuring singer Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen) who has teamed up with his brother Mark to write his most succinct record to date. The self-titled, HURTSMILE is a raw sonic sucker punch in the face! From the opening buzz saw riff of “Just War Theory” to the epic finale of “Slave” and “Beyond The Garden/Kicking Against The Goads,” Gary continues to push and poke you in the ear with his lyrically provocative themes.

“Hurtsmile was a long time coming… I always wanted to write a record with my brother,” says Gary. “I’m a big fan of Mark’s song writing and his snarling guitar riffs.” The timing was right as Extreme was in between their touring and record cycle, leaving Gary the freedom. They recruited Joe Pessia (bass) an alumnus of Nuno Bettencourt’s Dramagods as well as the guitar player for Tantric. Joe also engineered, and co-produced the record with Gary. To round off the lineup they enlisted heavy hitter Dana Spellman on drums. “It’s an east coast-Boston thing,” states Gary. “Mark, my brother, was in a band with Nuno’s brother… Joe was in Nuno’s band and Dana was a friend, and student of Mike Mangini (former Extreme drummer) … we like to keep it in the family.”

The lineup is not the only thing familiar with the band. In true Cherone fashion, the record is chock full of swaggering guitar, soaring vocals and the trademark Cherone eclecticism on tracks such as “Jesus Would You Meet Me,” the reggae-tinged “Just War Reprise” and the Dylanesque “The Murder Of Daniel Faulkner (4699).” “Hurtsmile was about returning to my roots, writing a record in my basement, a straight up rock ‘n’ roll record… but it turned out to be more diverse and ambitious than I expected.”

Gary is no stranger to taking on intense topics, and Hurtsmile is no exception. The first half of the record is a group of more loosely knit songs such as the cynically inquisitive “Just War Theory,” the limits of free speech “Tolerance Song (Edit)” and the disturbingly mesmerizing “Kaffur (Infidel),” inspired by the beheading of Daniel Pearl.

The second half of the record is more conceptually cohesive; an introspective look at the nature of man and the condition of the human heart. “Stillborn” introduced earlier, and “Set Me Free” both touch on mans inclination toward darkness, culminating with an epic journey from sin to salvation… “Slave” to “Beyond The Garden/Kicking Against The Goads.”

For the most part both themes are represented as two sides of a record. A concept familiar to Extreme fans but make no mistake, whether reading between the lines or just moved by the visceral power of the music, this is a completely different type of record. Gary adds, “All the boys in the band have brought something new to the table, and you’ll never know what hit you!”

HURTSMILE track listing includes:

Just War Theory; Stillborn; Love Thy Neighbor; Kaffur (Infidel); Painter Paint; Tolerance Song (Edit); Set Me Free; Jesus Would You Meet Me; Slave; Beyond The Garden / Kicking Against The Goads; Just War Reprise; The Murder Of Daniel Faulkner (4699).

The songs “Just War Theory” and “Love Thy Neighbor” can exclusively be listened in full in streaming on the Frontiers Web radio. Tune in at http://www.frontiers.it/webradio .

-Rhapsody Of Fire’s New Album!

FROM CHAOS TO ETERNITY is the title of the new Rhapsody Of Fire’s full-length album that will be released in Spring 2011 through Nuclear Blast at a worldwide level.

The 10th studio album of the Italian power metal act will be a new musical masterpiece. Described by the band as the natural evolution of the monumental chartbreaker of 2010 THE FROZEN TEARS OF ANGELS, the new album will represent an important goal in the history of Rhapsody Of Fire, as it will be the last one based on the fantasy sagas started in 1997 with the debut album LEGENDARY TALES.

As usual Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli will be the producers of the new work. But for the first time, part of such a production (vocals and guitar recordings) was and will be mostly based in Trieste, the Italian hometown of the two founders. The recordings of bass and drums already took place in Wolfsburg at “The Gate Studio” under the wise supervision of their longtime friend Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Angra, and more).

Luca says: “We are really proud to reveal to the whole world that the production of our new full-length album is at a very good point already. Lyrically it has a particular meaning for all of us, as with the fifth and final chapter of the ‘Dark Secret saga’ our band will close its fantasy cycle started 13 years ago. The dark secret will finally reveal itself and for the last time Sir Christopher Lee will give his unique and fundamental contribution to our work. Musically expect something really special out of the ten album titles. A song like ‘Ghosts Of Forgotten Worlds’ with its rageous and hypnotic guitar riff, will make you breath the dusty atmospheres of the southern ghostlands. ‘Aeons Of Raging Darkness’ is pure melodic chaos translated into music, ‘Tornado’ the greatest technical challenge for each single band member and ‘Tempesta Di Fuoco,’ the first speed track completely sung in Italian language. For my song ‘Fantasia Gotica’ I wrote and finalized the cinematic orchestral arrangements inspired by the visionary genius of Tim Burton, while ‘The Splendour Of Angels’s Glory (A Final Revelation)’ is Alex’s choral and majestic track for the perfect finale of the dark secret saga. Our bass player Patrice Guers and our drummer Alex Holzwarth did their best job so far in a Rhapsody Of Fire album. One more word is needed to underline the excellent performance of our singer: in this new release, Fabio Lione will present himself definitely as one of the best and most versatile singers, being able to pass with unique ability and talent from the most aggressive vocals, to clean angelic voices and powerful operatic parts. Once more you are going to be really surprised.”

Alex Staropoli adds: “As always the cinematic elements that defined our style will enrich each track, but the guitar work will be again very important too. What is sure is, that for such an album Luca and I composed our best solos ever!”

FROM CHAOS TO ETERNITY will be released in spring 2011, in a jewel case standard edition of 24 pages, and in an exclusive limited edition of 48 pages, full of great and unique surprises — as well as two bonus tracks, for a total of 65 minutes of Rhapsody Of Fire’s legendary music.

Stay tuned for further news!

-Mr. Big’s New Release WHAT IF… Due February 8th, 2011 On Frontiers Records U.S.A.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Mr. Big is back to announce their highly anticipated new studio album entitled WHAT IF… on February 8, 2011 on Frontiers Records.

WHAT IF… is Mr. Big’s first all-original album since the reunion of the four original members, Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey back in early 2009. Sixteen years after the release of HEY MAN, the new recording is set to bring back Mr. Big on the height of the current Hard Rock scene.

Guitarist Paul Gilbert said: “This is the first Mr. Big album I have been a part of, since fourteen years and it was done in a snap. It was fun and we had really a good time in making this one.” Continues Billy Sheehan “It’s so great to be back with Paul, Eric and Pat too. We wrote this record like we did in the old days for the first two records. Jamming together in the same room to write songs.” Pat Torpey adds “Some of the recording process is different now from what we were used to in the old times. But I think this record really managed to capture the performances of the band, not of the individual musicians.”

Eric Martin concludes: “I like to compare this to the first album, when we just got to know each other in a reharsal studio and cut it in eight or nine days. This is like chapter 2. We had so many years, so many records and so many things behind us. Now this feels like a beautiful brand new chapter starting for all of us.”

WHAT IF… was produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Rush, Iron Maiden) and the release will be followed by a World Tour which will kick off in South America in March and will hit Europe in early summer.

Formed in 1988, Mr. Big forged its place in hard rock history by combining trademark “shredding” musicianship with awesome vocal harmonies. The original lineup — vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Pat Torpey. Mr. Big produced numerous hit songs that ranged across a wide array of rock genres — be it ballads, heavy metal, or blues rock.

Their hits included “To Be With You” (Billboard Hot 100 number one single in 15 countries for weeks, in 1991, propelling the band the band to huge international success and record sales in the multi-millions), “Wild World,” “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” “Just Take My Heart,” and a host of heavy metal songs that were played mostly during their live performances: “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy,” “Addicted To That Rush,” “Colorado Bulldog,” and “Take Cover.”

WHAT IF… will be released in a special edition CD + DVD in digi-pak, regular CD, vinyl and digital download and in a limited edition luxury box including the CD, DVD, LP and exclusive memorabilia.

WHAT IF… track listing includes: Undertow; American Beauty; Stranger In My Life; Nobody Takes The Blame; Still Ain’t Enough For Me; Once Upon A Time; As Far As I Can See; All The Way Up; I Won’t Get In My Way; Around The World; I Get The Feeling; Unforgiven (exclusive bonus track for Europe / North America — not on vinyl edition).

The DVD will include the video clips of “Undertow” and “All The Way Up” plus a documentary “Making Of” the album including interviews and exclusive behind the scenes features of the four members.

Complete Web Site Overhaul Chronicles Rock Vocalist’s Career Retrospective

ATLANTA, GA — The Serge Entertainment Group LLC, has relaunched a redesign of the Kelly Keeling web site at http://www.kellykeeling.net/ . The site is a way to keep the rock vocalist/multi-instrumentalist’s name, music and merchandise available to his friends and fans. The complete redesign was created by Gary Kelley at Creative Ninjas who worked closely with Serge Entertainment Group owner Sandy Serge to develop a new Kelly Keeling logo and complete web site overhaul.

“I did this for the fans,” remarks Serge. “To help them remain aware of the great music Keeling has created throughout his lengthy and versatile career. So far, the response has been extremely positive.” In 2009, Surgeland Records, a division of Serge Entertainment Group, released Paris Keeling’s END OF RIDE REVISITED, a CD project featuring Keeling and songwriter Marty Paris.

Kelly Keeling commenced his career in music over 25 years ago at the age of 14 in Lafayette, Louisiana. In 1990, he joined the rock band Baton Rouge as a vocalist and guitar player, and shortly thereafter the band was signed by Ahmet Ertegan to Atlantic Records. Their album SHAKE YOUR SOUL was released followed by LIGHTS OUT IN THE PLAYGROUND a year later. That same year, Keeling was involved with his first platinum album, Alice Cooper’s HEY STOOPID, co-writing the song “Snakebite.” In addition to Alice Cooper, Keeling has recorded, performed and/or toured with such distinguished musicians/bands as Roger Daltrey, Dokken, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Carmine Appice, Vinny Appice, Tony Franklin, Denny Laine, John Norum, Erik Norlander, Heaven & Earth, and Michael Schenker. In 2005, Keeling released his first solo album GIVING SIGHT TO THE EYE. He also contributed to the Michael Schenker Group’s 25th anniversary CD TALES OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL and performed as lead vocalist on the debut Screamin’ Lords CD LONG LIVE ME. Keeling also toured with Trans-Siberian Orchestra in 2006 and 2007 as a lead vocalist. In 2008, Keeling toured with Don Dokken opening for Queensryche, and recorded an album with experimental band O’2L featuring Jane Mangini and Al Pitrelli. Infinity Overture – THE INFINITE OVERTURE PT. 1

RELEASED: January 21, 2011

Lion Promo Page w/streaming audio:

Danish progressive metallers Infinity Overture return with their second album THE INFINITE OVERTURE PT. 1. Led by the superb guitar and compositional skills of Neils Vejlyt, the band have taken a step away from the symphonic metal slant of their debut to mark the start of altogether darker and more distinctive journey with enhanced progressive elements blended with gothic textures.

The listener will also notice the new album being more guitar driven due to the reduction of symphonic elements. The new material also showcases the virtuoso side of the band making great use of dynamically rich music wrapped around irresistible vocal melodies. Vejlyt must be applauded for managing to combine all these elements whilst still ensuring the song remains the main priority and these are nine compelling compositions.

As a result of the slight change of musical direction Vejlyt saw fit to change the band lineup to best bring out the new music and also ensure the calibre of musicianship was high enough to perform the new material live.

New female vocalist Kimmie Tenna Nielsen is the most major change, with her moving and powerful voice driving on the new compositions, her performance is set to make her an upcoming talent in the metal world. Bassist Bernardo Fesch has brought awesome bass groves to the compositions whilst drummer Jakob Vand has adds his grand technical skills and ideas to the band making for a very exciting rhythm section.

Niels Vejlyt also secured the services of two of his favourite vocalists to perform some guest spots on the new release — namely Fabio Lione (Rhapsody Of Fire) and Amanda Somerville (Epica, Kamelot, etc). Niels describes this as, “An honour to have such greats on the songs.”

In addition to these two household names are a number of other guest backing vocalists all adding further depth to the compositions.

Production guru Sascha Paeth (Edguy, Rhapsody Of Fire, Kamelot) once again oversaw the mix and master with the outcome being another full and rich sounding release from Infinity Overture.

Overdrive – ANGELMAKER

RELEASED: January 21, 2011

Lion Promo Page w/streaming audio:

After 2008’s self-explanatory LET THE METAL DO THE TALKING, Swedish traditional metal exponents Overdrive deliver the most pulsating album of their career with the pedal to the metal bombast of ANGELMAKER. This new album sees Overdrive pummel the listener with their heaviest release yet. Home to 12 tracks all of which will make any self respecting metal fan throw the “horns” in appreciation.

With a history dating back over 20 years the lineup has been consistent since their initial formation in 1980, with the exception of vocalist Per “PerilOz” Karlsson who came onboard for the band’s reformation in 2003. This lengthy combined experience between the band members makes Overdrive run like a well oiled machine, locked in, loaded and ready to unleash its metallic grit to all generations of metal fans.

Lyrically the album deals with a variety of topics, from catholic priests, vampires and Indians to psychopaths and warnings of our world going down the drain. While the title track tells the gruesome story of the Swedish angelmakers, a group of women who “took care” of illegitimate children through drowning, suffocation or starvation, being paid for their services. The last angelmaker was convicted in the 1920s, yet still the story is one that shocks.

The work on ANGELMAKER started in late 2008. Janne Stark (Locomotive Breath / Constancia) started writing a couple of tracks, “Thriller” and “Angelmaker,” which set the style and approach. Then Kjelle Jacobsson, Janne, Per Karlsson, and Kenth Ericsson started writing, each on their own. Demos were made and finally the band sat down together in February 2010 to select from the 25+ songs that had been written. Eighteen songs were selected. Rehearsals began and in May recordings started. With no hurry and the aim of simply making this the best Overdrive album ever. The drums were recorded by Johan Blomström at Studio Sound Palace, while the guitars, bass and vocals were recorded at various studios. The mixing, by Pelle Saether (Grand Design, Zello, Zeelion) at Studio Underground in Västerås started in July and in August the album was finished. Next the band drafted 10 people to help evaluate and select the final track listing for the album which proved to be an eye-opening experience for the band. In November 2010 the album was mastered and finished and an extension of the bands deal with Lion Music was signed.

Given their pedigree and reputation it’s no surprise to hear Overdrive enter the third decade of their career hitting new heights with ANGELMAKER; a slice of traditional metal as good as you will hear in 2011.

Overdrive – ANGELMAKER video medley:

1. Signs All Over (Stark/Karlsson) – Kicks off the album with the pedal to the metal! Classic double bass drums heavy metal!

2. In Gut We Trust (Stark) – Heavy stomper with an infectious soccer choir chorus. The lyrics are about trusting your guts, your inner feelings, instead of technology and false prophets.

3. Angelmaker (Stark) – Another high speed metal number with an evil riff. An angelmaker was a woman who “took care of” children born out of wedlock and made them “disappear.” The last one was convicted in the 1930s in Sweden.

4. I Know There’s Something Going On (Russ Ballard, arr: Stark) – A cover of the Russ Ballard penned song recorded by ABBA’s Frida in the ’80s, rejuvenated and metalized.

5. Under The Influence (Ericsson/Karlsson) – Maiden-influenced riff oriented fast metal rocker which deals about a man trying to suppress his morbid urges. Featuring the classic Overdrive harmony guitars.

6. On With The Action (Jacobsson) – Up-tempo environmental-friendly classic metal.

7. See The Light (Stark) – A song originally penned by Janne Stark for the latest Scorpions writing session. As the Scorps wouldn’t have it, Overdrive would. If it sounds a bit vintage Scorpions, it’s no wonder.

8. To Grow (Karlsson) – Another fast pace straight ahead heavy metal song with some nice variations.

9. Mother Earth (Jacobsson) – A mid-tempo rocker with a heavy chorus dedicated to the North American Indians.

10. It’s A Thriller (Stark/Karlsson) – Up/mid-tempo metal influenced by Accept and Judas Priest, heavy and mean!

11. Cold Blood Chaser (Stark) – Riff-filled up-tempo rocker, a bit influenced by vintage Riot (where the name Overdrive also comes from). Lyrics that take a twist on the vampire theme.

12. The Wavebreaker (Karlsson) – PerilOz’s epic anthem that goes from its soft acoustic intro into full heavy metal mayhem, ending where it started. Loaded with twin guitars. The perfect album closer.

There are few guitarists in rock history that have managed to scale the heights that Robby Krieger managed while a member of one of the all-time great groups, The Doors. Krieger continues to release original music that strikes a chord in music listeners worldwide, as evidenced by his critically acclaimed solo album, 2010’s SINGULARITY. But the greatest proof is that Krieger was recently nominated for a Grammy Award, in the “Best Pop Instrumental Album” category, alongside the likes of Gerald Albright, Larry Carlton & Tak Matsumoto, Kenny G, and Kirk Whalum. In order for an album to be considered for this category, it must contain 51% or more playing time of instrumental tracks.

“I am super proud to be nominated,” says Krieger, “Especially as hard as Arthur Barrow [the album’s co-producer] and I worked on this album. We started working on the song ‘Russian Caravan’ as a tribute to Miles Davis, shortly after he passed away years ago. We never gave up on the project, even though it took a lot longer than we planned. Believe it or not, we actually said, ‘Man this is good enough to get a Grammy!’ And here we are, nominated. Thank you!” Also incredibly pleased with the nomination is the owner of Oglio Records, Carl Caprioglio, the label that released SINGULARITY. “Oglio Records has been in business since 1993. We have worked with many great artists, but I have to pinch myself every time I think of my good fortune to be working with the legendary Robby Krieger. I will certainly go down in history as one of the luckiest guys in the independent record label business.” Robby is represented by Tom Vitorino Management.

Robby Krieger was one of The Doors’ principle songwriters, penning the classics “Light My Fire,” “Love Me Two Times,” “Love Her Madly,” and “Touch Me.” SINGULARITY co-producer Arthur Barrow is also a multi-instrumentalist musician, best known for his stint as a bass player and band leader for Frank Zappa in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Arthur appeared on The Doors AN AMERICAN PRAYER album, and the two have worked together on nearly all of Krieger’s solo work and performances.

Along with Barrow, SINGULARITY features a number of Zappa alumni, including Tommy Mars, Bruce Fowler, Larry Klimas, and Vinnie Colaiuta (all of which are featured on the album’s aforementioned standout track, “Russian Caravan”) as well as one of the last appearances from Little Feat’s Richie Hayward. SINGULARITY also features two additional long-time Krieger collaborators, Dale Alexander on “Solar Wind” and Kevin “Brandino” Brandon on “Event Horizon.” Additionally, Brandino has appeared on Krieger’s CINEMATIX album for Oglio Records, plus albums from Outkast, Justin Timberlake, and Mary J. Blige, and played over two decades with the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS on February 13, 2011, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Tune in to see if Robby takes home the prized gilded gramophone statuette!

-Darkest Era Reveals Front Art For Metal Blade Debut THE LAST CARESS OF LIGHT! Track Listing And Release Date Announced!

Darkest Era, the heavy metal band based in Northern Ireland and one of Metal Blade’s newest additions to its artist roster, have recently completed work on their forthcoming album titled THE LAST CARESS OF LIGHT.

The release date for THE LAST CARESS OF LIGHT has now been set for February 11/14, 2011 in Europe and February 15 in North America!

“It is with great pleasure that we announce we have finished work on our debut album; to be titled THE LAST CARESS OF LIGHT. The album is a work of dark, stormy, epic heavy metal that we are proud to release upon the world. Chris Fielding did a fantastic job in capturing the Celtic atmosphere of our songs while bringing out our heavy metal influences from bands like Warlord. We are very excited about it,” comments vocalist Krum.

Guitarist Sarah Wieghell adds; “It has been an incredible experience recording our debut album for Metal Blade, the songs came out better than even we were expecting. I think we’ve made a really strong record to be proud of, I can’t wait for people to hear it!”

1. The Morrigan
2. An Ancient Fire Burns
3. Beneath The Frozen Sky
4. Heathen Burial
5. Visions of the Dawn
6. To Face The Black Tide
7. Poem To The Gael
8. The Last Caress Of Light Before The Dark

Comments the band on the artwork and album title: “The title is taken from the closing song on the album. There are a number of different themes running through the record; THE LAST CARESS OF LIGHT represents the turning of the tide, the fragile line between hope and despair, and the battle of strength against weakness.

“The artwork was done highly renowned metal cover artist Paul McCarroll. He based the concept around the opening line of the opening song, and the image depicts the Morrigan in her transition between goddess of war and the serpent form she took when she attacked Cú Chulainn, the mythical Irish warrior. The story is allegorical of the other, more personal themes explored on the album. Paul did a great job in creating something which both compliments the conceptual vision for the album, and that looks totally killer!”

Darkest Era have a Europe-wide reputation for their intense, ferocious and engaging live performances, and an original sound which draws fans from the Pagan, Folk and True metal genres, Darkest Era stand ready to bring their epic, Celtic metal to the world stage.

THE LAST CARESS OF LIGHT will be released the 11th/14th of February, 2011 via Metal Blade Records in Europe and the 15th of February, 2011 in North America!

-Believer Finishes Tracking For New Album!

Believer has just finished tracking their second release for Metal Blade Records. The recording will be mixed by Kevin Gutierrez at Assembly Line Studios and produced by Trauma Team Productions. The band is once again pursuing new musical territory.

“We decided to bring back some of the orchestral feel of DIMENSIONS by utilizing more layered guitars, keys and melody with different vocal arrangements. There is still the ‘Believer’ sound, but the musical progression continues for us.” – Kurt Bachman

“We revamped our writing and recording process so that everyone could work at their peak times. We also spent a lot of time finding the right combinations of gear to achieve the sounds we wanted. Each Believer album has had its own sound that distinguishes it from the preceding album, and this project is no different in that respect. You still have the core elements that make it recognizable as Believer, but the guitar tone is heavier, the songs are tighter and musically it seems more refined.” – Jeff King

Believer’s Metal Blade debut, GABRIEL, was released to rave reviews in 2009.

“Believer’s adventurous breaks with past doctrine still make this comeback soar.” – Revolver Magazine

“it’s almost as if they picked up right where they left off with their 1993 opus complexus, DIMENSIONS — equal amounts sonic combustion and intellectual exploration for all and sundry.” – Decibel Magazine

“GABRIEL is immensely heavy, deceptively melodic, ambitiously daring, and brilliantly played” – Terrorizer Magazine

“Thinking man’s thrash — far more welcomed than virtually any bunch of new-school wankers.” – Outburn Magazine

-Lazarus A.D. Announce New Album Title, Track Listing, And Artwork!

Midwest thrashers Lazarus A.D. are pleased to announce BLACK RIVERS FLOW as the title to their second full-length album due out January 28/31 via Metal Blade Records in Europe. The highly anticipated release was recorded in July and August 2010 at Belle City Sound with Chris Wisco and was mixed & mastered by James Murphy at Safehouse Production.

Track listing BLACK RIVERS FLOW:
1. American Dreams
2. The Ultimate Sacrifice
3. The Strong Prevail
4. Black Rivers Flow
5. Casting Forward
6. Light A City (Up In Smoke)
7. Through Your Eyes
8. Beneath The Waves Of Hatred
9. Eternal Vengeance

Bassist and lead vocalist Jeff Paulick comments; “First off, I have to say we are incredibly proud of BLACK RIVERS FLOW. It’s been three and a half years since we recorded our last album and we’ve grown a lot since then. During the writing process for BLACK RIVERS FLOW we were dealing with great personal tragedies. We found a way to draw strength from those tragedies and use it as inspiration to write what we feel is an incredibly more sound record than the last. On BLACK RIVERS FLOW, everyone stepped up their game; the riffs are heavier, the choruses catchier, and the vocals have improved and been diversified tenfold. We are on a mission to show the world that we are a force to be reckoned with and aren’t thinking about a trend, we’re thinking long term. I think our fans will hear these songs and be blown away. The energy and power this time around is undeniable, and we hope the reaction amongst the community reflects just that.”

The first single off the upcoming album BLACK RIVERS FLOW, “The Ultimate Sacrifice,” will be added rather shortly to the following location, along with preorder info, tour dates, videos, and more! http://www.MetalBlade.com/LazarusAD

Lazarus A.D.:
Jeff Paulick – Bass/Lead Vocals
Dan Gapen – Lead Guitar / Vocals
Alex Lackner – Guitar
Ryan Shutler – Drums

“The thrash revival seems to have spawned two types of bands — retro sound-alikes and those who are looking to make the genre relevant now. Lazarus A.D. are one of the latter.” – Revolver Magazine

“straightforward, engaging, KILL ‘EM ALL style climax.” – Decibel Magazine

“Get ready for some friggin ridiculous thrash from Wisconsin! Not bay area thrash, think MASTER OF PUPPETS era Metallica thrash” – Hails & Horns Magazine

“This one hits so hard it hurts, it’s meaner than a hungry pit bull with rabies; In two words, damn good.” – Blabbermouth.net

Titans Eve came together when brothers Brian (guitar/vocals) and Kyle Gamblin (guitar/backup vocals) decided to start their own musical project in 2008 after the departure of previous projects. The lineup of Titans Eve was completed with the recruitment of Jesse Hord (bass) and Casey Ory (drums), from there the Vancouver-based band have set out to create honest, powerful modern metal and have repeatedly piled into the “Titan Train” (i.e. their 2007 Ford E-350 van) and traveled across Canada, bringing their music to as great an audience as possible. They’ve played over 80 shows in the past year and a half and 2011 will see them travel further than ever before as tour dates will be announced for Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

“Titans Eve has quickly risen through the ranks of the Vancouver metal scene, quickly becoming one of the best thrash bands in town.” – Absolute Underground Mag

“The Gamblin brothers shred like crazy, easily making Titans Eve one of the best local (Vancouver) thrash bands. They really blew everyone away, and sent beer flying all over the place.” – Absolute Underground (Live Review)

“I’d like to point out Titans Eve is a band I like because of their anthem filled nature. The songs on show are very easy to sing along to, and that could be just what is needed in metal today. Stand out tracks: ‘Judgement,’ ‘Nightfall,’ and ‘Becoming The Demon.'” – Ultimate-Guitar.com

“Titans Eve churned out their own unique brand of thrash metal. Brothers Kyle and Brian Gamblin did a great job stirring up the crowd,… With a short but sweet set with crowd favourites including ‘The Tides Of Doom,’ ‘Serpent Rising,’ ‘Into The Fire,’ and ‘Living Lifeless,’ Titans Eve left it all on stage and made a strong impression.” – Abort Mag (Live Review)

“Thrashy, crunchy goodness that’s perfect to bang your head to.” – Funeralrain.net

“The next act of the night, was again, Vancouver’s own, Titan’s Eve. They had their fans standing strong against the barrier, thrashing amongst one another, and screaming the words back to the guys…Their performance was extremely strong, and energetic. The last song, Brian got the crowd cheering him on to chug a beer, and its my pleasure to say, he successfully chugged a full beer, and finished their set with a song packed with heavy riffs, strong drum beats, and vocals to captivate the audience.” – RockstarWeekly.com (Live Review) from opening w/ Exodus

-Conflicted Update

ImageFM.ca announced their 2010 annual awards winners! Conflicted walk away with the following three awards:

Song “Victor Victoria” – WINS Best Progressive Metal Single of the Year

Lead Vocalist Jason Orton – WINS Best Male Vocalist of the Year

Guitarist Mark Owen – WINS Best Guitarist of the Year

ImageFM.ca 2010 Awards will be presented during an online party on January 8, 2011 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Conflicted were also named “Best Metal Band” at the 2010 The Toronto Independent Music Awards (TIMAs).

Conflicted have risen to become one of the most revered and “must see” live acts in their region, having headlined many of their own shows, plus having opened for international touring artists, all to stellar audience reception. The responses from music insiders have been emphatically and overwhelmingly positive.

Fronted by the gifted and talented Jason Orton — a professionally trained, four-octave range vocalist — he brings what one would consider a Halford-esque tonality, intensity, and vibrancy to Conflicted, with vocal and stage performances that have been widely critically acclaimed.

Orton, in the opinion of many, is poised to become the next metallic singing superstar hailing from Toronto to achieve world recognition, in league with Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) and James LaBrie (Dream Theatre), the latter of which Orton is often favourably compared to.

Conflicted’s epically orchestrated and powerful, theatre/arena rock — one that expertly blends modern and classic elements to create a musicality distinctively their own — is skillfully and dynamically delivered by Robert Mark Owen (guitar), John Kolodziej (bass), Corey Stoll (drums), and Ron De Coste (keys), all of whom themselves are skilled virtuosos with years of experience which resonates both live and in the studio.

Conflicted are currently playing live shows in support the forthcoming release entitled NEVER BE TAMED.

Please join Conflicted at Rockpile this Thursday, December 16, 2010 on at 8:30 p.m. with Warmachine and Mind Mechanics. 5555 Dundas Street West (at 427), Etobicoke. $10. All Ages and 19+ Show. Doors at 7:00 p.m. Please respond and circulate this event on Facebook:

-Mortiis Readies For Full European Winter Tour With Combichrist

OSLO, NORWAY — Mortiis will return to the touring circuit this winter with a two-month, full European tour supporting evil-electro outfit Combichrist.

“In some fundamental ways, Combichrist and Mortiis are very different, but in other fundamental ways, we are very much the Mortiis bandsame,” explained vocalist and namesake Mortiis. “At the end of the day, both bands have this ‘f-you’ attitude. It’s expressed somewhat differently musically, but energy and attitude-wise we’re carrying the same torch, so to speak. I think fans of both bands will pick up on that.”

Mortiis took a break from touring while preparing their latest releases, the soon-to-emerge next album, THE GREAT DECEIVER and PERFECTLY DEFECT, a totally free digital download. Unveiled October 10, PERFECTLY DEFECT is full-length, downloadable album available at mortiis.com. PERFECTLY DEFECT is the quintessential prelude to the world of THE GREAT DECEIVER — while the latter is heavier and darker, the former is varied, experimental, and largely instrumental. The bottom line is that PERFECTLY DEFECT leads into THE GREAT DECEIVER acting as a crucial stage in the evolution of Mortiis’ music.

The group is anxious to get back on stage and is ready to unleash months of pent-up aggression during their live show. Fans can expect to hear tracks from PERFECTLY DEFECT and THE GREAT DECEIVER, as well as some older songs with a different twist.

“We’ve seriously pimped up a selection of older songs that we’ll be performing,” Mortiis said. “So, across the board, it will be a new, and for lack of a better expression, very ‘pimped up’ bunch of songs!”

A tour with Combichrist was imminent. Aside from having a long acquaintance with Combichrist’s founder and Norwegian-native Andy LaPlegua, drummer Joe Letz is an extended member of the Mortiis family. After connecting with Letz during Mortiis’ US tour with the Genitorturers — Letz’s former band — the drummer got involved with Mortiis on some of the recording of THE GREAT DECEIVER.

“It was just a question of time until we’d go out on tour together again,” Mortiis said. “Joe is still a part of this band, the way we all see it. We always have a great time when we’re together and I think this is something everyone’s been wanting to happen for a while now. So when the opportunity came about, we pretty much did what had to be done to make it happen.”

-Late ’70s Punk Experimentalists The Notekillers Release WE’RE HERE TO HELP To Critical Acclaim

Album Makes Dan DeLuca’s Philadelphia Inquirer Best Local Albums of 2010

The Notekillers, who originally slugged it out during the punk wars of the late 1970s, continue their improbable reincarnation march with this barely-hinged celebration of rock & roll noise. Woefully under-documented back in the day, their only official recording — “The Zipper,” a self-released 7″ — was a favorite amongst the cognoscenti in the experimental underground and a secret influence on some of the most important avant-bands of the past 20 years.

Now, following an acclaimed archival release on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! label, the Notekillers complete their leap out of the shadows and land solidly in the present with WE’RE HERE TO HELP — a brand new LP with all-new material developed during their second life. Rich with tuneful, neck-snapping hooks that explode at any and all times, this album will connect deeply with anyone who lives for the dizzying, defibrillating power of positive audio aggression.

With WE’RE HERE TO HELP the Notekillers present further evidence that they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with any of the mightiest musical units on the planet.

“That record (‘The Zipper’) was so heavy for me and Kim and Lee… It was this propulsive guitar instrumental that was just breakneck… They had a big influence on me… The music is way ahead of its time.”
– Thurston Moore

“Astonishing…While the rhythm section churns furiously, David First peels off a series of scrambled guitar lines, precise even when he’s improvising. His diagonal riffs are marvelously untraceable (Surf-rock? New-wave? Heavy metal? Free jazz? Serialism?), and somehow these dense compositions inevitably come out sounding like party music. It’s clear this band ranked with any of New York’s much celebrated no-wave acts.”
– Kelefa Sanneh | New York Times

Tour rumors are still swirling as well.

These two live sets came out within a week of each other last month, and they’re obviously meant to capitalize on / celebrate the memory of the iconic Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.). The Dio set is the debut from the Niji label and features two complete concerts from the old Donington Monsters Of Rock festivals: the band’s first appearance with the original Dio/Campbell/Bain/Appice lineup in ’83, and the DREAM EVIL-era lineup with Craig Goldy replacing Vivian Campbell in ’87. The Heaven & Hell disc — subtitled 30 YEARS OF HEAVEN & HELL, and sub-subtitled LIVE IN EUROPE in the US and LIVE AT WACKEN in European markets — was recorded at the summer ’09 Wacken Open Air festival with the Dio/Iommi/Butler/Appice lineup. Obviously, the Dio concerts (from the original BBC recordings) are from a “younger,” more fiery era and the Heaven & Hell songs are performed expertly by the quartet of metal sages, and, due to technological advances, sound better. And all of the material is good. The Dio shows offer a nice cross-section of his Rainbow days (“Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Starstruck,” “Stargazer,” “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll”), Black Sabbath days (“Heaven And Hell,” “Children Of The Sea,” “Neon Knights”), and the early solo stuff, with a few instrumental solos tossed in for good measure. Some of the titles listed are not performed in full — and in fact a quote from Rainbow’s “The Temple Of The King” is inserted into “The Last In Line” but doesn’t even appear in the track list! — but it’s still cool to hear them. Let’s face it, Ronnie was like a human iPod shuffle live, throwing in medleys, ad libs, snippets, and reprises of various songs throughout his sets. That is a total Dio trademark. (Aside to the true Dio maniacs out there: What the heck is the bit entitled “Children Of The Sea” on the ’87 disc? He does sing the words “children of the sea” but it doesn’t sound like the Sabbath song at all.) Although none of the three new tracks recorded for Sabbath’s 2007 release THE DIO YEARS are included, the Heaven & Hell set draws from all four proper studio albums Ronnie recorded with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler (four from 1980’s HEAVEN AND HELL, three from 2009’s THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, and two each from 1981’s MOB RULES and 1992’s DEHUMANIZER). Despite sounding a little under the weather (like he had a cold) Ronnie — at age 67 or so! — still exhibits his legendary power; and he’s downright vicious in parts of “I” and “Heaven And Hell.” Honestly, it’s not like there is a shortage of Dio-fronted live material out there, but these releases do a fine job showcasing different eras of the man’s career. As far as extras, both sets include liner notes (Malcolm Dome’s in NEON NIGHTS trump Dante Bonutto’s in AT DONINGTON) and photos, and the Dio set is a nice digi-pak with picture discs and cool replica backstage laminates. Horns up.

ERIC JOHNSON – UP CLOSE (A-) EMI/Vortexan Music, 2010

Texas treasure Eric Johnson’s perfectionism may not allow for frequent contributions to the music world, but when he is finally satisfied enough to release new material you can be assured it will be of exceptional quality. On his seventh album in 32 years (!), Eric again shows us why he is universally regarded as one of the finest guitarists on the planet. You don’t have to wait long to hear Eric’s brilliance, as the succinct but evocative “Awaken” starts things off with great atmosphere and the distinctive stamp of a master; worthy additions to the EJ catalog follow as we get fantastic new instrumentals such as “Fatdaddy,” “Gem,” “Soul Surprise,” and “Vortexan,” pieces full of the beautiful chordal arrangements, violinistic melody lines, and ethereal solos Eric is renown for. UP CLOSE finds Eric choosing to entrust most of the vocal duties to some rather high-profile guests, including turns by Steve Miller on the blues standard “Texas,” Jonny Lang handling “Austin,” and Malford Milligan sounding like a rougher Eric on the excellent “Brilliant Room,” Eric eventually showing up on “Arithmetic.” Several guitarists also lend their talents to the album, including Jimmy Vaughn, Sonny Landreth, and Steven Hennig, with longtime sidemen Kyle Brock, Roscoe Beck, and Tommy Taylor participating. If I have one criticism it is that things get a little too mellow toward the end of the album but overall UP CLOSE is a sensational listen meant to be played all the way through. The album was recorded in Eric’s own home studio with none other than famed producer Andy Johns mixing some of the tracks, and the sound is predictably excellent. UP CLOSE may not be quite the equal to AH VIA MUSICOM or VENUS ISLE, but it’s damn close. Another sublime offering from a uniquely gifted and inspired artist…

MISTHERIA – DRAGON FIRE (B+/B) Lion Music, 2010

Listening to the opening track from virtuoso keyboard master Mistheria’s latest project DRAGON FIRE, one is tempted to instantly dismiss the material as a typical example of pompous, studied, grandiose neoclassical metal, and maybe it is all those things but damned if repeated listens to the album don’t reveal some captivating musicianship. There is a wealth of talent to be heard on DRAGON FIRE, notable guest appearances showing up frequently in the form of Rob Rock (“Lies & Deception”), Lance King (“Two Of Us”), Mark Boals (“Metal Opera Pt. 2: Eye Of The Storm”), and John West and Titta Tani (“Dragon Fire”). Lots of guitar here as you would expect, ably handled by celebrated shredders George Bellas, Neil Zaza, Roger Staffelbach, and Emir Hot, with Alberto Rigoni on bass and John Macaluso behind the drum kit. You might think of DRAGON FIRE as Yngwie with more keyboards and that would be a fair description, but it’s very well-executed and often I found myself reaching to replay a track as there are some intense performances throughout, not least of all by Mistheria himself, his dizzying excursions always outstanding (check out “Chopin Fantasy”). Main weakness is the production, which sadly could have been quite a bit better, but the quality of the musicianship manages to overcome the muddy mix. Admittedly music for a limited audience, DRAGON FIRE is stylistically solid and is recommended for fans of Yngwie, Artension and Ring Of Fire.

UNSUN – CLINIC FOR DOLLS (B) Armoury Records/Mystic Production, 2010
10 tracks, RT: 44:15

The press release starts out thusly: “Polish female-fronted goth metallers Unsun, featuring ex-Vader guitarist Maurycy ‘Mauser’ Stefanowicz…” Then I saw a sticker on the CD claiming the band is for fans of Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, and Within Temptation. I immediately decided this was a desperate cash grab by some death metal dude trying to jump on the bandwagon started by those other bands, way WAY too late in the ballgame. And I was wrong. Put simply, CLINIC FOR DOLLS rocks! Vocalist Aya sounds killer; her accent is barely noticeable and she can portray vulnerability, aggression, and swagger with ease, and she doesn’t go for over-the-top operatic stunts. Over the course of the whole album Mauser’s songwriting gets a tad bit same-y but this is definitely one of those records you can play from start to finish without needing to skip anything. (Maybe we should say “consistent” instead of “same-y?”) The heavier songs have great chunky guitar riffs and wicked drumming, kind of a “precision power metal” vibe, and the production is crystal clear and powerful. There are moments of damn fine piano playing, and the synth parts scattered here and there all work; in fact I hope they expand on these in the future, for more shading of the songs. The lyrics are most definitely of the “thinking man’s metal” variety, and Ms. Aya sure knows her way around a hook — take one listen to the title track and you’ll be convinced. The standout tracks are the driving opener “The Lost Way,” fiery closer “Why,” the up-tempo “I Ceased,” the chugging “Clinic For Dolls,” and the building “A Single Touch” — I especially dig the vintage, spooky Queensryche lead-in to the solo section of this one. Overall, a very nice surprise here.
