The power trio from Toronto toured relentlessly, selling over 15 million albums worldwide in the process, and penning such all-time great arena anthems as “Rock ‘n Roll Machine,” “Hold On,” “Magic Power,” “Lay It On The Line,” “Fight The Good Fight,” “Allied Forces,” “Never Surrender,” “Spellbound,” and “I Live For The Weekend.”

Always purveyors of positive messages in their music, which continues to be a staple at Rock Radio, Triumph headlined on some of the largest festivals of the era, including the 1983 US Festival in California in front of a throng of 500,000 screaming fans.

Triumph was inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame in 2007 and into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and the group reunited for two show-stopping performances at the Sweden Rock Festival and the Rocklahoma Festival in 2008.

Most recently, their 1979 hit “Lay It On The Line” from the GREATEST HITS REMIXED package was featured in the summer blockbuster “Grown Ups” (starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, and David Spade).

-Circle II Circle Issue Update From Midwest Tour

American power metal kings Circle II Circle — featuring vocalist Zak Stevens of Savatage fame — are currently rocking through the Midwest US on the newest leg of their ongoing world tour, which is in support of their latest album CONSEQUENCE OF POWER. The band will play the final two shows in Chicago and Cleveland.

Stated Zak Stevens from the road this week: “We’re still cruising along playing shows in the Midwest in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota in November and December to finish off our initial world tour in support of our new CD CONSEQUENCE OF POWER. We’ll be touring out across the U.S. supporting the new album throughout 2011. We’re looking forward to seeing all our fans across the country in the coming year and we’re very excited about the worldwide response to the new record.”

Circle II Circle Remaining Midwest US Shows:

12/10/2010 Nitecap Chicago – Chicago, IL
12/16/2010 The Phantasy Nite Club – Cleveland, OH

When Savatage singer Zak Stevens left the band in 2000 to form Circle II Circle, the whole power metal scene listened up. Right from the debut of their first album WATCHING IN SILENCE, Zak made it unmistakably clear that he was willing and able to continue where Savatage had left off, but without giving his new band’s sound a more up-to-date feel. His charismatic personality and unmatchable vocal talent established the name Circle II Circle in the metal scene within a very short period of time.

With the release of Circle II Circle’s fifth studio album CONSEQUENCE OF POWER, the master vocalist and his band return with their ultimate masterpiece. This release is musically the most mature album in the band’s history, wrapped in outstanding lyrical content, and sure to please and amaze every fan of Zak and Savatage.

“…what tends to make Circle II Circle albums resonate with a cross section of hard rock, heavy metal, and even prog fans is the purity of delivery and the fundamental basis of the songwriting, both of which characterize Consequence of Power.” – Blabbermouth

“On CONSEQUENCE OF POWER, Circle II Circle proves over and over again that power metal doesn’t have to be alienating and wanky, over-the-top absurd, or dependent on flashy solos in place of meaningful expression; it can be melodic hard rock played with talent and both instrumental and compositional skill.” – All Music Guide

“If pondering the output of Savatage members in the 2000s, one could argue that Zak Stevens and his group Circle II Circle has been the most productive as well as adhering to his emotional, confident metal sensibilities.” – Blistering

“Musically, this is a great album with equal emphasis on the drums and guitars both competing with Zak for supremacy.” – Metal-Rules

-Falconer Begins Recording New Album ARMOD!

Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall of the Swedish metal band Falconer has issued the following update:

“Falconer has now begun the recording of its new album ARMOD at Andy La Rocque’s (King Diamond) Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden. Our drummer Karsten Larsson, who is the first one to be recorded, thinks this may be his best session ever. The vibe is really awesome!”

According to Weinerhall, ARMOD “will be completely sung in Swedish except for the bonus tracks that will simply be English versions of the best (according to us) new songs. This time we have concentrated on the traditional folk side of our music including more traditional folk songs (the majority of the material is still our own), more fiddles and flutes.

“This is a way to finally devoting an entire album to the influences and getting that out of our system, so to speak, and to do the thing some have asked for during ten years. This is not the new direction of us but just the sound of THIS album.”

January Releases:

Falkenbach – TIURIDA
Viking Metal – January 28, 2011

After long years of waiting, the cries of Odin’s ravens and the powerful thunder of Thor’s hammer Mjöllnir resonate over Midgard. Scene connoisseurs and Viking metal enthusiasts know that this can only mean one thing: The release of Falkenbach’s latest album! The fifth work by the Skaldic Art mastermind Vratyas Vakyas impressively resumes the journey into the world of Nordic mythology. Epic melodies, raw parts, catchy leads, and calm interludes come together on TIURIDA (Eng. “Glory”) to deliver the characteristic sound attributed to Falkenbach. Clean vocals, choral arrangements, and acoustic guitars add a melancholic folk touch to the sound universe of Vratyas Vakyas, who used his time well to craft true anthems. The new tracks were recorded under the supervision of Patrick Damiani of Tidalwave Studio, and deliver a full and crystal-clear sound, allowing every last detail and melody line to shine. The new album is the culmination of Vratyas Vakyas’ past work and has most certainly already earned him entry into the pantheon of the gods.

Battlelore – DOOMBOUND
Epic Fantasy Metal – January 28, 2011

Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin, and in particular its tragic hero Túrin Turambar, are the inspiration behind Battlelore’s latest album. DOOMBOUND is the Finns’ very first concept album, giving Túrin’s experiences and adventures new life. The band’s unmistakable brand of epic fantasy metal revels in sonorous melodies, mystic and mysterious sounds, and heavy Middle-Earth inspired riffs. The elven-like vocals of Kaisa Jouhki meet the Uruk-Hai screams of front orc Tomi Mykkänen, transforming tracks such as “Kärmessurma,” “Olden Gods,” and “Last Of The Lords” into an integral soundtrack to Tolkien’s world. The fellowship was supported technically by Janne Saksa (Sound Supreme Studio) and Dan Swanö, who meticulously conjured the new album’s breathtaking sound. True fans will adore the limited edition first pressing six-panel digi-pak, which includes a bonus DVD (Live at Club Nosturi 2008 and 2009, video clips, and behind-the-scenes footage). DOOMBOUND shows the Finns at their very best and is the ideal starting point for a journey to Middle-Earth for both Battlelore enthusiasts and Tolkien admirers!

Modern Metal – January 28, 2011

The resistance moves to the next level. A little over two years since Artas released their explosive debut, they return ready to unleash yet another musical monster. The underground rebels remain uncompromising, continuing on their chosen path. RIOTOLOGY is a true modern metal beast that surprises with a highly volatile mix of thundering double bass, aggressive riffs, and melodic interludes. The disparate vocal styles (clean, screams, growls) present on the album support the multifaceted instrumental fraction and are perfect for the multilingual lyrics that include German, English, Spanish, and French. Jacob Hansen (Heaven Shall Burn, Neaera, Hatesphere) mix and mastering give the tracks on RIOTOLOGY their superb sound, while Jan Yrlund’s (Impaled Nazarene, Korpiklaani, Tyr) somber artwork perfectly captures the album’s character. With the modern metal anthems found on RIOTOLOGY, Artas will undoubtedly soon recruit a mighty legion of brothers-in-arms for the coming rebellion.

-Metal Blade Records Inks Worldwide Deal With Swedish Metallers In Solitude!

Currently Recording Metal Blade Debut Release In Stockholm With Fred Estby!

Announce New Guitarist!

Metal Blade Records is pleased to announce the signing of the metal act In Solitude, who hails from Uppsala Sweden (the same town as Watain & Invidious)!

In Solitude comments on signing to Metal Blade Records: “It’s been a very long, uneasy process finding the right home for In Solitude. After going over several offers from labels, Metal Blade’s genuine interest in, and understanding of our music, singled them out. This coupled with our respect for them, made this historic label the obvious choice. Over the years, Metal Blade has put out an amazing array of masterpiece records. We are very excited and honored to be able to add to this respected collection over the years to come.”

President of Metal Blade Records Michael Faley adds: “In Solitude has a sound that is reminiscent of the classic metal of UFO while stamping their own evil imprint on it. We are extremely excited to have In Solitude on our label and look forward to working with this talented band while turning this underground innovator into a household word. Look for their new album in 2011.”

The week of November 15th, the horde entered Nicke Anderson’s (Hellacopters) brand new studio Gutterview Recorders in Stockholm, Sweden with producer Fred Estby (Dismember, Death Breath) to record the band’s sophomore record, which will see release in the spring of 2011. The band comments: “From the first meeting with Fred, we knew that we wanted to work with him. He fully understood our needs and what we are aiming to create. After hearing his work, we knew that he was also a fan of organic production. This is very important to us. His studio is recently built and we are thrilled to be one of the first bands to record within its walls.” Stay tuned to Metal Blade Record’s sites for more information and studio updates from the band.

In other news: In Solitude is proud to announce Henrik Psalm, vocalist and guitarist for the heavy punkers Sonic Ritual, as the latest addition to the horde. Guitarist Henrik Psalm comments: “Soon it will be winter and I am very happy to be a part of the snowstorm of broken glass that is In Solitude. I’ve got a good feeling that we will pierce quite a few hearts. There will be some blood in the snow. My blood. everyone’s blood. Ideas are growing into actions. More blood in the snow. It’s great. Passion. Fire. I love these guys. We are really doing something that will make motion. It’s in the air around us right now. We love each other and we love that fire that moves us. It’s something not of this world and I am one of the instruments that makes this happen, and that’s a beautiful thing.” The cultivation of a new sound nears perfection, one that bears the dynamic powers of youth and the embittered wisdom of the ages.

Follow the Owl. Follow your own burning blood into the night!

In Solitude is:
Niklas Lindström – Guitar
Henrik Palm – Guitar
Gottfrid Åhman – Bass
Uno Bruniusson – Drums
Pelle Åhman – Vocals

About the band:
In 2002, under an Uppsala Moon, the spirits of ancient evil and old metal are summoned and celebrated. The cloaks of Swedes Niklas Lindstrom (guitar), Uno Bruniusson (drums), Gottfrid Ahman (bass), and Henrik Helenius (guitar / vocals) rose within a circle of fire and gave birth to the band In Solitude. Tones of below and voices from the deep beyond enlightened the eve. At dawn a new entity will have arisen although a year would pass before it would ride out.

Enter 2003, a feared and forceful enigma would soon be drawn to this flame; Hornper (vocals) had arrived. By the dark light of the morning star, the five bad points of In Solitude, who hail from Uppsala, Sweden (the same town as Watain & Invidious) cast their first shadows. In 2004, In Solitude released the band’s first self-titled demo, filled with the incipient verses and music from the new beast. Copies soon dissipate into smoke.

In 2005 guitarist/vocalist Henrik Heleius strays off the burning path. The silhouette of another takes form and Mattias Gustafsson is conjured to enrich the sonic spells of these children of the night. In 2006 the band released the second demo HIDDEN DANGERS, which breathes the night air briefly as it too, quickly dissipates into the aura of the European metal nightscape.

In 2008, Sweden’s S.M.P. Records released the EP HIDDEN DANGERS as a 7″ which quickly sold out. Under this same cycle, the band unleashes their nameless eight-song, full-length debut in the form of a CD on Pure Steel Records and cast in wax on High Roller Records. Captured at Burlesco Studios, the same as the demos, this now famous debut was produced by Hasse Bruniusson. The heat of the album spread throughout the land as both versions rapidly saw represses.

Heeding to a growing following, especially in Germany and their home country of Sweden, In Solitude embarked on a handful of European tours. Touted festivals also witnessed this glorious new beast, namely Keep It True, Up The Hammers, Pounding Metal, Metal Magic, and Hell’s Pleasures festivals. Amidst these heighted tiers however, another member grievingly falls, and by the end of 2009 Mattias Gustafsson returned to the mist wherein he came.

2010 saw In Solitude signing a worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records. This is also the year that Henrik Psalm, vocalist and guitarist for the heavy punkers Sonic Ritual, passes the trials by fire and thus a new fury rises within the horde.

Gregg’s influences mix Yngwie Malmsteen type shredding with the melodic feel of Uli Jon Roth, giving him a multi-dimensional sound that shines through in the music he creates.

Anthony Stahl is Livesay’s keyboardist, and co-writer of most of the band’s music. Influenced by players such as Tony Banks and Elton John, Anthony brings a wide range if styles that give Livesay’s music its depth.

Beneath Gregg and Anthony’s technical whirlwind is the rock solid foundation of drummer Tim Hunter and bassist Alan D’Angelo. Influenced by Joe Franco and Tommy Aldridge, Tim mixes thunderous double bass with tasty fills that push the band into high gear. Combining the power of Geezer Butler with the speed and finesse of Steve Harris, Alan fills the bottom end of Livesay’s sound, as well as writing most of the band’s lyrics.

Dean Steenrberg’s vocals fit Livesay’s music perfectly. A gifted singer and songwriter, Dean uses influneces such as Mikael Akerfeldt and Ray Alder to form his own style of singing that bring his and Alan’s lyrics to life.

Together these five talented musicians blend their varied styles together to create a sound that’s uniquely their own.

“The tracks ‘Repent At B’ and ‘Straight Up’ are just awesome” – Fireworks Magazine, UK

Band: Conflux
EP Title: Conflux
Label: Self-Released
Street Date: Out Now
Genre: Jazz-Metal

Conflux’s style can be roughly defined as contrapuntal jazzmetal. Their music coalesces meticulous classical composition, loose jazz improvisation, and raw heavy metal brutality into a deeply sophisticated but widely accessible sound. With a broad range of appeal, the quartet consistently challenges the notion that “art” and “entertainment” are two separate entities, producing songs that are just as groovy as they are cerebral.

Originally conceived as a traditional (and vocally fronted) heavy metal band with an unusually sophisticated classical and jazz angle, the music is the brainchild of guitarist Kevin Florian. As the lineup developed with members of extremely disparate backgrounds, it became an instrumental entity completely comfortable with incorporating virtually any style.

SPARK shows the very beginnings of a band poised to change and unify both the worlds of heavy metal as well as jazz.

Drums: Steven Florian

Somebody wanted more rock n’ roll in the world and another kick ass band to deliver that. Formed in the Southern parts of Sweden by musicians who comes from a well known music scene. All with prior experience of record releases and vast amount of live performances both Europe, Asia and South America. A collaboration with Tripaway Music USA and Phibble Music USA gave the band a reason to give the people what they want. It all started at the beginning of 2009 when the band was contacted by Tripaway Music a production company in USA, who showed interest in financing songs for an EP.

The band started to arrange some songs to send to the US for an approval. Tripaway Music liked what they heard and gave the go-ahead for a recording of the EP. They also contacted Phibble Music in the US, which he had collaborated with before, to hear if the where interested in marekting and the EP in the US. They loved the idea and the project was set into motion. Afer the recording Staffan got an offer to move to L.A. — an offer he couldn’t resist. Instead they brought in their longtime friend Rasmus Ehrnborn also a highly skilled guitarist and producer.

At the end of 2009 Grand Rezerva released their self-titled debut EP, and has since then had extensive radio play in both the US and Sweden. They we’re voted the no. 4 most requested band on a US radio show and has also featured in numerous big Swedish newspaper with full-page spreads.

In 2010 after continuing air play on radio in both Europe and the US, the band decided to bring in a second guitarist just to thicken the sound even more. The highly skilled guitarist and friend of the band Johan Eklund was brought in. With Johan now on board another chapter in the “Grand Story” was written.

This same year saw a continuing collaboration with Tripaway Music for a new single release.

-Wino: Solo Acoustic Album Details And U.S. Tour With Scott Kelly Announced

We don’t need to rave about the well-known legacy of the man who is Scott Weinrich, better known as Wino. With dozens of albums released throughout his time spent in The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Shine, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Shrinebuilder, Dave Grohl’s Probot project, and much more since the late ’70s, his mammoth and varied resume spans nearly three full decades, essentially set him up as a purveyor and forerunner of the entire genre we now call doom rock. A true legend; this is Wino. But, with the release of the humble but legendary musician’s new solo album, ADRIFT, a side of the man that most haven’t heard is being uncovered for the first time.

Answering the call from his friends and supporters to record an acoustic solo album following the sudden and tragic passing of friend and bandmate Jon Blank, who appeared on Wino’s first “solo release” PUNCTUATED EQUILIBRIUM album in 2009, he set to work on his most personal and powerful recording to date. ADRIFT is a revealing alternative view of this underground legend’s personality and history. Stripped down to the bare minimum — just his voice and his guitar — the songs on ADRIFT follow classic American songwriting ideals offering a compelling mixture of emotion and storytelling.

Wino is a man on his own in a boat without sails. He’s fighting against tides and storms, enjoying the moments of bright sunshine; bound to the will of something external — the wind, destiny, and the drift. Easily his most heartfelt and personal material to be recorded to date, the 12 tracks on ADRIFT help elevate this already iconic musician to a new level of storytelling, setting Wino up to fall right in line with greats like Johnny Cash, Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and other classic American songwriters.

ADRIFT Track Listing:
1. Adrift
2. I Don’t Care
3. Hold On Love
4. Mala Suerte
5. Old And Alone
6. Iron Horse/Born To Lose
7. Suzane’s Song
8. DBear
9. Whatever
10. Shot In The Head
11. O.B.E.
12. Green Speed

ADRIFT is set for official release on respected German label Exile On Mainstream Records March 8th, 2011 in North America, the label now distributed domestically by E1 Entertainment. A limited edition vinyl version of the album featuring extended liner notes and more is to be released in the U.S. on January 18th by Volcom Entertainment.

Wino will hit the road stateside this February on a short acoustic tour, rocking alongside longtime friend, and also Shrinebuilder band mate, Scott Kelly (Neurosis). The tour will be in support of the upcoming split 7″ between Wino and Kelly, to be released early in the year by Volcom, as well as the ADRIFT album. Sponsored by BrooklynVegan, the tour will venture through California, Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland and New York, showcasing both legendary artists each in solo, acoustic mode.

-“Judas Priest Announce Farewell Tour!” Ugh… Damn. I know it’s completely unrealistic to expect all these bands of aging superstars (Scorpions, Kiss, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell/Dio, Saxon, Motorhead, etc.) to go on forever but sometimes it just seems like they will just keep on keeping on, doesn’t it? Many of these guys are obviously grandfathers in their 50s and 60s but they can still kick big ass on record and on stage. It’s downright amazing, if you ask me. That’s why I was shocked to hear about Priest, when I really should not have been. I think a lot of it is that I’m pissed I’ve only seen them once since they reunited with Rob Halford, and I’m regretting those missed opportunities. And speaking of the Metal God, I’ll be seeing his solo band tomorrow night (Thurs. 12/9) at the House Of Blues in Chicago. With this Priest farewell tour news just breaking I wonder if he’ll address it onstage?

-Anyone else watch “Full Throttle Saloon” on TruTV? It’s the reality show centered on the huge biker bar that is only open during the biker rally in Sturgis every year. Jackyl’s Jesse Dupree is invested in the Full Throttle, and he’s constantly dealing with the other owners/managers. So far this season he’s coming off like a bit of a narc, like when he tattled on his main partner’s girlfriend for getting a tattoo. Kinda funny seeing a rock star in that role. 🙂

-My little zone on our Christmas tree now has a Kiss ball ornament, a Gene Simmons-in-makeup ornament, and a little gold-colored Les Paul guitar ornament. We were playing “I’m Thinking Of An Ornament…” the other day (it’s the same as “I Spy”), and my 5-year-old bypassed all the Santas, angels, birds, and other animals to zero right in on “Daddy’s Demon ornament.” Ah, the warmth of the holidays…

-Circle II Circle is on its fifth studio album already? Yikes. Seems I missed a few somewhere.

-That benefit show for Y&T’s ailing Phil Kennemore looks awesome. Good for them.

-In my current playlist: Empires Of Eden – REBORN IN FIRE (7Hard), Spock’s Beard – X (Music Theories Recordings), John Norum – PLAY YARD BLUES (Mascot Records).
