-Two New Books By Author Greg Prato…

“MTV Ruled The World: The Early Years Of Music Video” and “The Eric Carr Story”

As the author of such books as, “Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History Of Seattle Rock Music,” “Touched By Magic: The Tommy Bolin Story,” and “A Devil On One Shoulder And An Angel On The Other: The Story Of Shannon Hoon And Blind Melon,” Greg Prato has two new titles that are now available for purchase.

The first, “MTV Ruled The World: The Early Years Of Music Video,” is the first-ever book to focus solely on the channel’s important building-block years, specifically from the MTV’s launch to when its original group of VJs left the channel. Comprised of over 70 all-new interviews (“Weird Al” Yankovic, Daryl Hall, John Oates, Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rob Halford, Stewart Copeland, Rick Springfield, Jerry Casale, Geddy Lee, Ann Wilson, Chuck D, Alan Hunter, Nina Blackwood, etc.), the book is not only an eye-opening account of the early years of MTV and the stories behind its biggest videos, but also of the music industry, important music developments/events, and the “Big ’80s” in general.

The second, “The Eric Carr Story,” is the first-ever book to tell the life story of Kiss drummer Eric Carr. Comprised of all-new interviews, the book also doubles as a study of 1980’s era Kiss. You’ll find insight into all of Kiss’ albums that featured Carr (from producers Bob Ezrin, Michael James Jackson, and Ron Nevison), as well as those closest to him (sister Loretta Caravello, girlfriend Carrie Stevens, Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick), and music-related friends (Eddie Trunk, Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, Anthrax’s Charlie Benante). Also included is one of the last-ever interviews conducted with Kiss’ original manager, Bill Aucoin, and for the first time ever, Kiss fans will be able to learn what the real story line to Kiss’ controversial release MUSIC FROM “THE ELDER” was all about (thanks to an explanation from Ezrin).

With both the 30 year anniversary of MTV’s launch (August 1, 1981) and the 20 year anniversary of Eric Carr’s passing (November 24, 1991) approaching in 2011, what better way to celebrate both subjects than with all-new books? Both books are set up in an “oral history” format (in other words, you’re getting the story straight from the source) and are chock-full of rarely seen (or in many cases, never-before-seen) photographs.

The MTV book is 427 pages long and priced at $24.99 (ISBN # 978-0-578-07197-8), while the Eric Carr book is 256 pages long and priced at $19.99 (ISBN # 978-0-578-07424-5). Both books will make perfect gifts this holiday season for rock music fans worldwide. For ordering information and to view samples from each book before purchasing, visit the following links…

-Dave Rude Band To Release New CD Single At San Francisco Show December 10th

Dave Rude Band, the power trio led by the Tesla guitarist, will release an exclusive CD single in San Francisco, California on Friday, December 10th. The band’s headlining performance at Bottom of the Hill, 1733 17th Street, will serve as the release party for the brand new track “Own The Night.”

Commented singer/guitarist Rude: “We’ve been writing and recording lots of new songs and they’ve mostly been going in a heavier direction. This new song is one we’re really proud of ’cause it’s very uniquely ‘us’ — heavy and aggressive, but still melodic and unexpected.”

Last month, Dave Rude Band released the first of its new recordings — a song called “The Key” that is available on the group’s just-unveiled new web site http://www.daverudeband.com/ .

“For years we’ve stayed in touch with our fans through the various social networking sites out there and it’s served us well, but we felt it was time to get our own permanent web site that we can stick with regardless of which new networking site is hip at any given time,” explained Rude. “This way people can always find us online and check out songs, updates, videos, merch, etc., even if they’re the one person left in the known universe who isn’t on Facebook yet. And we wanted to get the new songs out at the same time as our web site went up, so we set it up for people to get free downloads of our new songs when they sign up for our email list on http://www.daverudeband.com/ . So far we’ve sent out ‘The Key’ and the response has been great.”

All ticketholders for the December 10 show will receive a free CD single of “Own The Night” at the gig. Admission: $10 advance, $12 door. http://www.bottomofthehill.com/

“With their speed-of-light dexterity and endless dynamics, each of these eight tracks is like hearing the roar of a perfectly tuned Ferrari racing seamlessly through its gearbox.” – Exclaim!

The wolves are currently busy writing new songs for the follow-up album to their glorious third strike BIBLE OF THE BEAST. “We spent the last three months in the rehearsal room working out stuff for the new album. “For the production we’re going to team up with exactly the same crew as for BIBLE OF THE BEAST — Kohlekeller Studios for the recordings, any chapel we can haunt for organ and choir celebrations — and of course Studio Fredman and Fredrik Nordström for mix.”

-Vinder – VERTIGO

File under: heavy metal
Order #: CD6073
EAN: 402010016073 8
Release: January 28, 2010

Ralf Schulz (ex-Tyran Pace, ex-Sinner), Oli Kaufmann & Andreas “Foti” Stammler (ex-Tyran Pace), CD including a comic book!

Track list:
1. See My Commands
2. Best For Me
3. Glory To My King
4. Never Look Back
5. The Final Day
6. Proud To Wear The Holy Cross
7. Golden Flames
8. God’s Grand Hotel
9. My Creation

In 2001, drummer Ralf Schulz (ex-Tyran Pace, ex-Sinner) and bassman Thomas “Huyz” Mössinger (Just Priest) met in studio with a bunch of song ideas, which appeared from a time, when both together rocked in a band called Buster. The search for a fittin’ guitarist was on top of the to-do list, when mother fortune came along. They stumbled across Oliver Kaufmann (also a former member of Tyran Pace), who slept totally drunk at the edge of a little bathin’ sea near an open-air festival. Oliver had been a kind of musical mastermind of Tyran Pace. Easily seein’ that not so much had changed in the passed years, the three guys decided to found a band, which will take its place in metal heaven under the name Vinder.

They released their first album VISIONS OF TIME in 2005. After that, Dirk Schäffner (ex- The Armada) got into the band as the new lead vocalist. To use Dirk’s lyrical and voice potential right, new songs were written, for him to enclose his ability and to give the band a new face. Songs morphed to a story and the story became a concept album, called VERTIGO.

Presented with a by-packed comic, drawn by enormous talented Anja Uhren, VERTIGO will tell this dark story by creatin’ moods and emotions, visually, acoustical and lyrical. Something never seen in German metal scene before this way….

-Forgotten Suns Reveals Release Date, Cover Artwork And More!

The Portugese Progressive Metal band Forgotten Suns has just set the release date for their upcoming EP REVELATIONS at December 17, 2010. The band will release their album through Pathfinder Records.

Forgotten Suns hails from Portugal (Lisboa) and their path so far can be divided in two distinct directions.

From the first-ever quintet there are only two remaining members: guitar player Ricardo Falcão and keyboard wizard Miguel Valadares. The musical chemistry between them sets the foundations of what Forgotten Suns is all about: exquisite song writing level melted with the inner technical demands that progressive music is usually flavoured.

The first half of their biography yielded two albums — FICTION EDGE (2000) and SNOOZE (2004) — who were early sons born out of the band’s musical growth in an adverse context. Even though yet with a blatantly lack of production, those albums were highly appreciated by the media and especially in the prog community by their strong melodic approach and song writing.

Musically speaking, the main purpose of the band is to do evolutionary albums under the progressive style and fulfill a lifetime dream through music with focus on high quality live and studio performances. After the two first releases, the band decided to enter a new level of production both in studio, live and as performers. This new state of mind and musical direction led to their last full-length album INNERGY.

REVELATIONS is an EP that has turned out to become the home for some lighter tracks taken from the INNERGY writing sessions back in the period between late 2006 and early 2007. This record is a collection of songs that were included on some live sets but never made their way towards a mixing desk for an official release with two exceptions: the in your face single “Doppelgänger,” released with INNERY (2009), now with a brand new mix; and the fantastic neo-prog magical story of “Betrayed,” an extra track from the band’s debut FICTION EDGE (2000) now with part I and II put together after so many years.

With “Phenotype” Forgotten Suns navigate through the waters of easy listening prog-metal structures versus the symphonic power ballad and high emotional tension of “Pinpoints.” The seven-string acoustic darkness of “The Hill” completes the track list of REVELATIONS with an overall dense cohesion, true balance and some of their best playing ever. The band is preparing a new full-length album and meanwhile REVELATIONS is without a doubt a must have for any Forgotten Suns’ follower as well as the evidence of the band’s ecleticism and mastery.

The band is revealing now for the very first time the cover artwork for REVELATIONS with the complete track listing:

1. Doppelgänger (3:39)
2. Phenotype (4:29)
3. Pinpoints (7:34)
4. The Hill (5:04)
5. Betrayed (14:43)
Pt. I The Curse
Pt. II Grey Zone

Forgotten Suns is:
Ricardo Falcão – Guitars, Backing Vocals, Lyrics
Nio Nunes – Vocals, Backing Vocals
Miguel Valadares – Keyboards, Programming, Backing Vocals
J.C. Samora – Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals
Nuno Correia – Bass, Backing Vocals

Band: Black Sunday Dream
Label: Tone Deaf Records
Street Date: Out Now

Black Sunday Dream is…

Brian George: Guitars, Song writer, lyricist. Born and raised in the S.F. Bay Area, Brian’s earliest recollection of music was from his sister and the Classical music she played. When The Beatles came here, it was all over for the classics. She brought the British Invasion to their house and he dived into that head first. “When I heard Hendrix, I thought maybe it might be cool to play music. When I heard Black Sabbath’s second album, THAT WAS IT! I wanted to make music and sound like that!” That Christmas the present was a Montgomery Ward guitar and amp, and he went wild. Later came Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen and Pink Floyd. “I just can’t imagine not playing music, it’s in my blood!”

Terrence: Bass, Keyboards, Song writing. A Bay Area Rocker since 1969 has played Guitar, Bass and or Keys in many local bands. With major influences from Cream, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Terrence likes to Rock with high energy.

Dennis Galway: Drums and Percussion, Song writing. Dennis’s big influences are Led Zeppelin, The Who, Beatles, Stones, and Rush. His past bands that he played with are San Francisco’s Thumper, Carlos, and Navigator. As far as musical style goes, John Bonham and Ian Paice are those that would be the most appropriate to mention as major influences for him.

Donald Hillier: Lead Vocals, Lyricist, Harmonica. Donald Hillier is a classic rock vocalist/frontman. His major influences are Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, and Bruce Dickinson. Donald has performed with original and cover hard rock/heavy metal bands in the Northeastern States, Quebec Province, and the West Coast.

Two Side Moon Promotions are excited to welcome progresive metal band Auvernia!

Please find below the text info for the excellent new album AFRAID OF ME.

Band: Auvernia
Album Title: AFRAID OF ME
Label: Independent
Street Date: Out Now
Genre: Progressive Metal

Auvernia is a metal band hailing from Argentina. Born in 1999 as a just-for-fun project, it took almost seven years and several lineup changes to build the foundations that would result in their first production in 2006, a four-track EP entitled YOU WILL COME. Although it was a low budget demo, it left no doubt that this wasn’t a just-for-fun project anymore; it managed to become something unique in the underground metal scene of Buenos Aires.

Two years later, the band released its first full-length album entitled TOWARDS ETERNITY. Good reviews were to come, and not just from homeland. The album crossed the barriers of territory to find listeners all over the world, surpassing all possible expectations.

But time doesn’t stop and neither does Auvernia. After years of its creative voice and only one album produced, the band was eager to continue composing. Inevitably a new album was in the making.

The band kept combining styles and influences including power metal, black metal, heavy, progressive, Latin, and classical music in the pursuit of an identity of their own, a challenging feat nowadays. That makes it hard to fit Auvernia into one category. Although the first album was Power Metal driven, the band continued to grow creatively, leading to their second release in 2010, a 12-piece LP entitled AFRAID OF ME.

The band currently consists of the founding members Fernando H. Varela (Vocals, Guitars) and Juan P. Verni (Drums).

Band: Tantric Cycle
Album Title: BLEED
Label: Ichiyanagi
Street Date: Out Now
Genre: Hard Rock

Tantric Cycle is an Austrian/Japanese Hard Rock Band formed by Paulus, Peter aka Lez, and Bones in Munich, Germany in 2006. The lineup was expanded with Satoshi Ichiyanagi and his twin brother Yutaka in Los Angeles in 2007.

Paulus, Peter, and Bones move to Munich, Germay in 2006 in hope of better musical opportunities and of completing their lineup with a suitable rhythm section. After finding a drummer and bass player they play a couple of shows together but, not sharing the same aspirations, they soon part again and the Austrians tour Austria, Germany, and Italy on their own as a three-piece acoustic act or at times with prerecorded drums and bass. In spring 2007 they take a plane to Los Angeles in spring 2007 where in only three months time they play over 30 shows and soon find themselves sharing the stage with rockers such as Dizzy Reed (Guns N’ Roses), James Kottak (Scorpions), Ray Luzier (Slash, Dio, Korn), Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), to name a few, in most of L.A.’s notable rock clubs, among those the Whisky A Go Go, Viper Room, The Roxy, Key Club, Cat Club, Les Deux, and many more. At Canter’s Kibitz Room, where Guns N’ Roses had some of their first appearances, they get to know Drummer Yutaka Ichiyanagi and his brother, bassist Satoshi.

Upon seeing their passionate performance the Austrians ask the Japanese to join their band and so they do.

Between further shows in clubs and at festivals in Europe, pesky jobs and injuries they return to Los Angeles the following years to link to their previous achievements. Among many other performances they play live in Andy Dick’s Sh*t Show, the Hollywood Rock Convention (with the BulletBoys, Enuff Z’ Nuff, and Pretty Boy Floyd), and got selected finalists of the Gretsch 125 Anniversary Unsigned Band Competition.

Recently Tantric Cycle composed the song “Jerry Cotton” for the motion picture by the same name starring German movie stars Christian Tramitz, Christian Ulmen, and Penelope Cruz’s sister Monica. The song was released on “Jerry Cotton’s” Original Soundtrack in March 2010.

Band: The Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad
Album Title: BONESLINKY!
Label: Kashgrab Records
Street Date: Out Now
Genre: Costume Rock

The Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad are a band of interstellar misfits who made their way to Earth in 2005 after their makeshift cardboard banana spaceship overheated. The ship jettisoned through space and eventually crashed into a Party City in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, Earth.

DMFS has been gigging hard ever since with one goal in mind: START THE RENAISSANCE OF COSTUME ROCK. Their first LP, DIE HUMPIN! received worldwide radio play and DMFS was interviewed by numerous media outlets in support of the album.

In 2007 they were selected as one of the top 60 bands in the US (out of more than 7,000) to appear on “The Next Great American Band,” from the producers of “American Idol.” The Squad were flown to Vegas for a whirlwind all-expenses paid trip where they performed in front of judges Sheila E, Johnny Rzeznik, and Ian “Dicko” Dickson. DMFS’s insane performance and gleeful attitude on the first episode of the show only increased their cult following, and YouTube hits of the band’s escapades increased exponentially.

In 2010, DMFS released their second LP BONESLINKY! in conjunction with a limited edition comic book featuring the band. They maintain Weird Experiments In Band Marketing at FluteSquad.com; a blog focusing on the band’s constant pranks and schemes to make a comfortable living in the music industry. In just one year Weird Experiments has been recognized by music industry moguls Derek Sivers and Steven Slate as a go-to source of info for unsigned bands.

Two Side Moon Promotions are excited to welcome Swedish classic rockers Hion Martell!

Please find below the text info for the bands excellent seventh album WILL CURE ANY DISEASE.

Band: Hion Martell
Label: Viskningar och Vrål/Plugged
Street Date: Out Now
Genre: Classic Rock

“It doesn’t happen everyday that a band mixes Glam rock of the 1970s The Sweet kind with Classic Stones/AC/DC like Rock and Roll and thrown in a bit American Southern Rockish Lynyrd Skynyrd here and there, with AOR melodies coupled with ’70s style Classic Rock tunes, played to perfection” – Gabor Kleinbloesem, Strutter, Holland

The story of Hion Martell started back in ’92. It was not exactly deep down in Louisiana among the evergreens. It was a small town called Ljusdal, in the middle of Sweden, among the pines. Guitar player, singer and song writer Christer Nilsson got some friends together and recorded a few tracks.

Influenced by artists and bands like JJ Cale, the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd the music was very basic rock. Two of the tracks, from that session, were eventually released on the band’s second CD (HIT AMBITION AT THE CANADIAN CLUB, 1999).

The name — Hion Martell — is to be pronounced “high on Martell” and is of course a tip of the hat to the world famous cognac.

A number of people have played in the band over the years. Ch’s brother, multi instrumentalist Håkan Nilsson has been beating tambourines, banging drums and pumping bass on more than a few Hion tracks. Guitar player Ulf Hagberg has played with the band since the first release, …FOR YOUR EXQUISITE DELIGHT (1993).

With the 2000 release TOP OF THE VISION a new, more permanent lineup emerged. One of the people joining the band at this point was bass player Stefan Larsson (a.k.a. Babbaen).

Even though female background vocalists was always an important part of the Hion Martell sound, this was the first time that there were any girls in the lineup. Actually at a point there were four of them! By the time PEACE! was released in 2002 only two of them were left.

After the release of PEACE! the band started writing on a concept album: MUSIC FROM THE SWING DYNASTY – IRON MOTEL BY HION MARTELL. The album was released and available for download only on the Internet in 2005.

The four-track CD WATER (2006) featured re-recorded versions of four of the tracks from the IRON MOTEL. In 2009 the band once again had a slight change in the lineup. Peter Subäck was added as the permanent keyboard player and Håkan switched from playing percussion to being the drummer of the band.

In November 2010 the band released the full-length CD WILL CURE ANY DISEASE on the indie label Viskningar och Vrål.

Argus was formed in 2007 and features Bruce Balich of Penance fame on vocals. They released their self-titled debut album on Shadow Kingdom records in 2009, which was greeted warmly by the metal press immediately, Decibel Magazine describing them as “…a chest-thumping display of epic heavy metal as performed by a bunch of staunch doom metal fans. Indeed, Argus are all about big riffs, galloping anthems, dark melodies and tube amps.”

The recordings of BOLDLY STRIDE THE DOOMED will take place at Soundscape Studios in Pittsburgh. The initial tracking sessions are set to begin this week and will continue throughout December and January. The master of heavy metal wizardry Dave Watson (Icarus Witch, Mantic Ritual, Crown The Lost) will be at the engineering and production helm once again. The album is set to contain approximately eight or nine songs, including track titles such as “A Curse On The World,” “The Ladder,” “42-7-29” and “Durendal.” As Metalreview.com said, “…strangers to the band who prefer their metal melodic, galloping and built on a classic doom foundation, consider Argus your call to arms…”

Argus will perform on the 16th of April 2011 at the Hammer Of Doom V Festival, the annual doom and epic metal appointment in Würzburg, Germany, where they’ll have the chance to perform with a cast of incredible bands such as Pentagram, While Heaven Wept, Atlantean Kodex, Solstice, and many more.

-Pavlov’s Dog Releases ECHO & BOO

Twenty years after their last studio album, and 35 years after PAMPERED MENIAL, Pavlov’s Dog presents its fifth album, ECHO & BOO. Powered by David Surkamp’s singular, by now sophisticated voice, ECHO & BOO is a multi-layered treasure waiting to be discovered. When you hear Surkamp’s voice, accompanied by affecting violin driven melodies unique to Pavlov’s Dog, the music will grab you tight and not let go. It’s distinctively emotional, gentle but rocking music courtesy of the one-of-a-kind Pavlov’s Dog.

From PAMPERED MENIAL to ECHO & BOO — background and history:

Actually the existence of this album is slightly sensational. If one told 10 years ago that there is a new Pavlov’s Dog album, we would have explained with a grin, that this can only be a brash fake, because the brand label of Pavlov’s Dog — singer/guitarist/songwriter David Surkamp — has died long ago in the ’80s. The (untrue) rumor says that Surkamp inhaled helium to be able to sing that uniquely — and finally died from it. This rumor strangely turned into a undoubted “fact,” after Pavlov’s Dog released two phantastic albums in 1975/76, and vanished without trace for three decades.

Pavlov’s Dog were founded in 1973 by former Chuck Berry and Bo Didley drummer Mike Safron. After Pavlov’s Dog entered the music szene in 1975 by the release of their first album PAMPERED MENIAL (being no less than the highest signed newcomer band ever since!), the band’s second album AT THE SOUND OF THE BELL was released in 1976. The guest musicians contributing to AT THE SOUND OF THE BELL sound like a Hall Of Fame (Yes, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Steely Dan, Jazzgiant Michael Brecker, …). The band split in 1977 during the recording sessions of their third album, and vanished as quick as they arised. But the two albums, featuring “the voice like coming from another world,” stayed solidly over the decades and became classics. A few years ago, PAMPERED MENIAL was even voted into the rank of the most important Progressive Rock albums of all times.

In 2004 Pavlov’s Dog unexpectedly seemed to appear from nowhere, and gave one concert with the original lineup, due to the 30th anniversary of PAMPERED MENIAL. On vocals of course David Surkamp, in best health and shape. Fans flew to St. Louis from all over the world, the response blew all exspectations. After the anniversary concert the band around Surkamp & Safron was completed by young musicians, the band played annual European tours, and 2010 finally they recorded the new album ECHO & BOO.

-Technical Metal Boundary Breakers Aliases Sign To Basick Records

Ever at the forefront of UK Metal, Basick Records are proud to announce signing of one of the most exciting bands you will hear this century — technical wizards and genre-molding mentalists, Aliases.

April 2010 saw Aliases rise from the melting pot minds of ex SikTh guitarist Pin, guitarist Leah Woodward, drummer Darren Pugh, bassist Joe Heaton and vocalist Jay Berast. Following in the spirit of Pin’s legendary legacy, Aliases are redefining the genre’s boundaries, with a hunger for experimentation and no fear of extremes.

Pin explains:

“We are interested only in taking Metal on a new and limitless path, allowing the music and vocals to grow organically and exist outside the common constraints of a single genre.”

Wasting no time, the band set to work on their debut six-track EP and in July put out the rough demo track “We Should Never Have Met,” which was received with an overwhelmingly positive response online. This prompted an invitation to play at this year’s prestigious Euroblast Festival in Cologne, Germany where the band stole the show, affirming them as a major force to be reckoned with.

Listen here:

Finding the correct players was essential and the band were willing to go to any length to forge the right lineup. Pin continues:

“I had searched for three years to find a vocalist since SikTh drew the curtains, first bringing over, only to have deported, a singer from the USA and then finding the awesome talent of Jay Berast in Paris, a long distance situation which works brilliantly. Darren Pugh and bassist Joe Heaton joined from Manchester band Veils and Leah Woodward is a rare guitarist not only having a playing style which complements my own, but she brings a ton of her own insanity to the mix!”

Nathan “Barley” Phillips, founder of Basick Records commented:

“Working with bands that push the boundaries to create a new definition for Metal, is what Basick strives for, so when I heard that Pin was cooking up a new project after the demise of SikTh, my ears naturally pricked up.

“After hearing all the demos and then subsequently having my face ripped off by Aliases’ live show at Euroblast in Germany, I just knew that we had to sign them. Not only has Pin managed to improve upon the insanity element of his former output, he’s also managed to put together a band of outstanding musicians that totally complement this interesting and complex music.

“So, after a few meetings and phone calls, we finally convened at the first Aliases show in the UK and consecrated the deal over a healthy amount of Jägermeister.

“I’m totally stoked to have the opportunity to work with a band who are creating music for all the right reasons and I can’t wait to release their debut EP and Album!”

Aliases’ as-yet-untitled debut six-track EP will be released on Basick Records in 2011.

-The Donots Reinvent German Punk Rock On New Album, THE LONG WAY HOME

NEW YORK — In true punk fashion, the Donots take 37 minutes and pack entire musical journey into it on their latest OK!Good Records release, THE LONG WAY HOME, which also includes an additional six bonus tracks from the album COMA CHAMELEON.

The difference, though, between the Donots and other punk rock staples is the band’s ability and willingness to grow and progress. Through a decade and a half-long career, the group has made it a point to follow their hearts and explore different takes on their traditional punk backdrop.

THE LONG WAY HOME lives up to its name: the record is a trip back home to an era of new wave and Euro synth-pop, combined with the Donots punk sensibility.

The album kicks off with “Changes,” an appropriately-named song for an ever-evolving band, as well as an appropriately-paced track foreshadow the next half-hour of music. “It sounds like one of those slow motion scenes out of a ‘Rocky’ movie, when Stallone remembers his boxing career and feels like getting into the ring again,” said guitarist Guido Donot.

The following 12 tracks range from full-on flashback radio-friendly pop, such as “Calling” and “Forever Ends Today,” to punk anthems like “Make Believe” or “Dead Man Walking” and even include folk influenced tunes like “Let It Go.”

“‘Calling’ is probably the most compact and direct one on THE LONG WAY HOME and includes every aspect I like about the ’80s: melancholy, restlessness, and a main theme which absolutely demands an additional synthesizer,” said vocalist Ingo Donot.

Meanwhile, “Make Believe” takes a classic punk political lyrical direction, as well a classic punk rock battle between guitars and a shouted chorus. “This is pretty likely the best link to the old days and songs of our band,” Guido said. “Once the c-part of the song kicks in, it’s got me jogging at 60 miles per hour.”

Formed 16 years ago in Ibbenbueren, Germany, the Donots have recorded eight albums. The pairing of Guido and Ingo came naturally, as the two are brothers, and it is reflected in the synergy of their songwriting. THE LONG WAY HOME shows a band brimming with confidence and a sophistication not common in a punk rock outfit.

-The Ocean: Guitarist Comments On Back-To-Back European Tours

German atmospheric progressive metal enigmas, The Ocean, recently wrapped up two successful back-to-back European tours; one with math metallers The Dillinger Escape Plan and the other with legendary doom/atmospheric rockers Anathema. The tours coincided with the band’s latest opus, ANTHROPOCENTRIC, released via Metal Blade early last month. Said guitarist Robin Staps of the two treks:

“Thanks to everyone who came out to see us during our recent European tours supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan and then Anathema. We’ve had an amazing time with both bands and would like to thank them for inviting us to join them.

“It was a great honor and fun to share the stage with The Dillinger Escape Plan. I have been a fan of this band for more than 10 years and had a blast watching them destroy every single stage they got to, 33 nights in a row. We’ve all become good friends over those five weeks, [The Ocean vocalist] Loic [Rossetti] had been guesting with them on the song ‘Sunshine, The Werewolf’ for the last 10 shows or so, and Ben Weinman joined us on piano for ‘The First Commandment Of The Luminaries’ in return. It was awesome, there is some YouTube footage ( http://www.youtube.com/theoceancollective ) up there if you care…

“The Anathema tour was equally amazing and came as a big surprise, as we didn’t really know what to expect from this tour. We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback we received everywhere from Anathema’s fans, as well as our own of course. We were the heavy band on this tour but it seems that the diversity of the bill was exactly what made it interesting for most people: the amazing Petter Carlssen opening up with an acoustic set, us following up with doom and destruction and then Anathema playing an epic two-plus-hour set most nights.

“Thanks for watching and listening. Stay tuned and keep on truckin’.”

ANTHROPOCENTRIC serves as part two of the concept explored on The Ocean’s well-received HELIOCENTRIC long player, released this past spring. The concept at the base of both offerings is a critique of Christianity from varying philosophical and personal perspectives. Both records were recorded in the mountainous isolation of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the highest elevated city in Europe, and recorded and mixed by their house sound engineer Julien Fehlmann.

“The Ocean Collective have their own subgenre really (progressive avant-garde sludge-score doomrock, or whatever they call themselves)…” — Ultimate Guitar

“If you didn’t think HELIOCENTRIC was heavy enough then this would be the album for you and if you still think it is still not heavy enough then you just might be from the Cenozoic Era. No intelligent life anywhere.” — Hellbound

“The Ocean isn’t in the bizz for making a few decent tracks to stand out from an otherwise bland album. Quite the contrary, they are in the bizz for making whole albums into experiences,” — Metal Archives

“Talented is an understatement, in much the same way as saying the band is simply ‘creative’ would be selling them short. The Ocean are a thinking man’s metal band, challenging and accessible in equal measure.” — Lush Beat

“ANTHROPOCENTRIC is the aggressive counterpart to the dynamic melodies heard on HELIOCENTRIC.” — About.com

-Joe Satriani sat in with the house band on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” the other night. Jay’s first guest was legendary comedian Bill Cosby, who came out and sat in on keyboards with the band for an impromptu jam. It really did look unplanned, and it was quite funny because Cosby can’t play a lick and was totally going nuts on the keys. Search it out on YouTube — it’s funny.

-That new Eric Carr book by Greg Prato looks awesome. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the fallen Kiss drummer — I never thought he got due credit for his abilities, and I always wanted him to sing more. I can’t wait to check out this book, particularly for the info on MUSIC FROM “THE ELDER.”

-I interviewed Jackyl bassist Roman Glick the other night. I’d been trying to catch up with main man Jesse James Dupree for what seemed like months (more like weeks, but still…) but we kept missing each other for various reasons. I’ll try to have a write-up next week.

-Gotta give mad props to my friend Jeff for imploring me to dig out House Of Lords’ 1992 album DEMONS DOWN, to give the track “Metallic Blue” another spin. Yep, that really is a great song. What the heck ever happened to lead guitarist Chick, anyway?

-Forgive me but who the heck are Will Wallner and Vivien Vain, and just how did they manage to snag all those guest stars for their album? Wow. Good for them — looks to be a cool record.

-I’m not sure I can tolerate the music on that Extreme Stage Diving app from Earache Records, but the game sure sounds fun. 🙂

-Man, if that Lemmy movie comes to a theater anywhere near me I’m so there.

-In my current playlist: Jackyl – WHEN MOONSHINE AND DYNAMITE COLLIDE (Mighty Loud Entertainment), Casa Mendoza – s/t (Mascot Records), chromatic BLaCK – s/t (OK!Good Records).

You know how sometimes bad things happen to good people? Sometimes things — or in this case, a thing — can be detrimental to a good band. This seems to be the case with Kryoburn and their secondary singer. He’s like a tumor on the band, not always causing pain, but it’s definitely there and you’re forced to deal with it. Am I being a bit harsh with this analogy? Not really, this is metal after all. I don’t like the sissy, whiny, mallcore vocals mixed in with my metal. It totally degrades it. I had high hopes for this band. They likened themselves to the almighty Pantera. If you’re going to compare yourselves to god-like bands, then you better deliver like no f*cking other! Not only that, but they raved that they also sound like Strapping Young Lad and Fear Factory. Now, being an SYL and Devin fan myself, I didn’t register Kryoburn with them at all. The thing that Kryoburn is all about is some kind of sci-fi, fantasy, and to a lesser extent, futuristic theme. The vocal style does have its deliciously brutal moments, and accounts for most of the vocals. It sounds like a snarling wild beast at times! But a few seconds later the savage chaos is obliterated; the mood is completely removed to the inside of a Hot Topic store. There’s a part in “Event Horizon” where the gayer vocals go into this emo chanting. And even though the drums are doing their damnedest at pummeling away with true metal fury, it fails to make the song sound brutal. Even later, in the same song, there is some face-smashing guitar soloing. But it’s short lived. “Reinvention” starts off mellow and funky and adds even more techno fusion with some keyboarding. But, again, it was the vocals that made this song DragonForce-esque. Maybe this band has some appeal to Nu Metal fans. The band has an admirable story of transitioning to a struggling local band eking out an existence in the middle of nowhere, to piggybackin’ it with a bigger name band which launched them to bigger heights. They’ve been through lineup changes already, but that’s to be expected for a band that’s relatively new. THREE YEARS ECLIPSED has the heavy metal element rooted in its foundation, which can rival pretty much all the other industrial/nu metal-ish bands currently on the scene. So, in other words, they don’t suck. But the softcore singing bullsh*t is what puts THREE YEARS ECLIPSED in the running to potentially appear on a “Twilight” movie soundtrack. Yes, it is that annoying, and the album is metal enough that it doesn’t deserve to be brought down by that, but unfortunately, that is the case.

LIMBONIC ART – PHANTASMAGORIA (C) Nocturnal Art/Candlelight Records, 2010

Hailing from Norway, and boasting about participating in the Mayhem tribute ORIGINATORS OF NORTHERN DARKNESS, you’d think we’re talking about an epic, Lord of the Black Metal Community-type band. Eh, not quite. It’s not even essentially a band anymore. It has been reduced to one its core members, Daemon, who has taken on all instrumental activity as well as vocal duties for his band Limbonic Art. The band was born during the height of the church burning festivities in Norway (led of course by the rebellious black metal gods). So Limbonic Art was poised to challenge the limits of metal just like his neighbors and contemporaries were doing at the time. I must say that Limbonic Art sounds similar to much of the black metal that came out of Scandinavia during the early ’90s. It’s almost a sad irony. Those on the forefront of black metal changed the sound and image of what anyone was expecting in the metal world. But then too many people tried to do the same thing and wound up sounding a lot like those they were inspired by. Limbonic Art is a very determined band, which is obvious not only because they’ve lasted 17 years, but because one man is behind the entire driving force of the band. PHANTASMAGORIA is their 2010 release and in my humble opinion, it is just mediocre. The interesting thing to note about this album is the use of a drumming machine in place of using an actual drummer. A bold choice indeed, which has pedantic critics up in arms bitching about the sterility of the machine. Personally, I didn’t notice the drumming machine as a flagrant faux pas, but then again, I’m not a drummer and also not as persnickety as others. Basically, it gets the job done. This is black metal for those that live and breathe with a black, metal heart beating and those who like seeing an underdog keep up with the giants. There was nothing that I thought was bad about the album, just that I had been through so many new black metal releases this year that PHANTASMAGORIA failed to captivate me.

MARCO MENDOZA – CASA MENDOZA (B/B-) Mascot Records, 2010

Marco Mendoza has played bass with an impressive list of heavy rock talent, including tours of duty with the likes of Blue Murder, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent, and Lynch Mob. On second solo album CASA MENDOZA, Marco ops for a more varied soundscape, blending rock with jazz, funk and Latin flavors for a mixed but interesting listening experience. Starting with a bizarre version of Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City,” the album was difficult to take at first, but subsequent spins revealed some fine musicianship and writing, especially on the uptempo fusion of “Circle Of Life,” groovin’ rocker “Betty Joe” and a smoldering cover of Dale Hawkins’ “Susie Q.” Unfortunately, Marco found it necessary to include too much mellow material as the album progresses, even adding in a cover of Carol King’s “You Got A Friend.” Marco is obviously a big fan of Glenn Hughes and the aforementioned Stevie Wonder and sometimes has a tendency to exaggerate their influence in his singing, but his smooth and inspired bass performance is near flawless, as are the contributions of guitarist Rafael Moreira, keyboardist Steve Weingart, and drummer Joey Heredia. So a mixed bag for me on this one, some great moments spread a bit thin I think — I’d recommend CASA MENDOZA to musicians plus those with an open mind and a taste for ’70s rock.
