About KISS Pick World:

Authentic Kiss City Tour Picks Only From KISSPickWorld.com!

“Forget the white picks! These are the Collectors’ Collectibles!” — Paul Stanley

You rocked with Kiss on the Hottest Show on Earth and Sonic Boom Over Europe tours. Now own the ultimate tour collectible — Kiss commemorative city tour guitar picks!

Limited-edition Kiss city picks were made for each tour stop on both tours featuring the country’s flag with the city, date and band member’s signature. A fifth, bonus pick was created for each tour stop on both tours as well.

Only a very small quantity of these Kiss city tour picks are left from each show and are now available exclusively at http://www.KISSpickworld.com/ .

“The custom tour city guitar picks were a special addition to our usual arsenal of Kiss picks. We had just a few to throw out onstage each night of the tours. I told my guitar tech to save a couple for me!” – Tommy Thayer

Each pick is limited to a maximum of only 200 made, and they will never be made again! The only remaining picks are the ones that were not thrown out to the crowd by Kiss or kept by the band members for their own collections.

To put how limited these picks are in perspective, note that a normal Kiss tour pick is produced by the thousands, and in some cases, tens of thousands during the course of a tour.

“I love the way these picks look! What a great souvenir from each show. I threw these out every night when we came out to bow before the encore.” – Eric Singer

Paul Stanley’s guitar tech, Fran Stewart, told us that once people realized how rare these picks were, local crew and stage hands were taking them from the mic stands before Kiss hit the stage. The techs then resorted to handing the picks directly to the band members while they were on stage to keep them from being stolen.

Because these picks are in such demand, bootleg versions have been circulating. Be sure to order directly from KISSpickworld.com to guarantee you’ll receive an authentic Kiss city pick. Only the genuine Kiss city tour picks include a bonus Kiss Tour Guitar Picks collectible card, featuring a statement of authenticity. These beautiful cards are collectibles in their own rights.

In addition to the commemorative city tour picks, KISS Pick World also has the “common” guitar picks used by the band in stock and ready to ship!

KISSPickWorld.com was launched to give fans and pick collectors a central place to purchase genuine collectible Kiss tour picks without fear of buying fake or bootleg picks.

“Straight from the Kiss stage to you… the ultimate Kiss Tour guitar picks!” – Gene Simmons

Phil was disappointed that he was unable to make the UK/Europe tour, but he’s very grateful that Brad Lang is covering for him and helping Y&T bring the music to people around the world while he undergoes treatment for cancer.

Thank you to the wonderful Y&T fans in Europe and the UK who so generously donated to Phil at shows on the autumn tour. When Scorpions drummer, James Kottak, came to Y&T’s Hannover show, he and his drum tech each gave a donation for Phil. As he stood speaking with Y&T manager, Jill Meniketti, James kept feeding the donation jar… thank you James Kottak. Throughout Y&T’s world tour, Don Dokken has kept in touch with Jill regarding Phil’s progress; a longtime fan and friend of the band, Don gave a substantial donation to Phil… thank you Don Dokken.

You can read Phil’s most current post on the forum regarding his health and well-being. He is reading (and re-reading) every single response. Post your messages to Phil in the following thread:

-HammerFall: New CD And New Producer!

In just two weeks, Sweden’s most successful Heavy Metal band HammerFall will enter the studio to record the follow-up to their gold album NO SACRIFICE, NO VICTORY. The songwriting is almost finished, and guitarist Oscar Dronjak reveals: “The new material contains a lot of fresh ways to look at the musical ideas, we’re trying to preserve the essence of what HammerFall is while at the same time updating the execution and approach. Definitely heavier and less straightforward than the previous albums, yet remaining true to what we believe heavy metal is all about.”

Expect the unexpected! The quintet also decided to work with a new producer, which is significant since the last four albums have been produced by Charlie Bauerfeind. The choice fell on James Michael, who recently worked with Motley Crue, Scorpions, Meat Loaf, and others. James Michael comments: “We are about to make a fantastic album. The band is firing on all cylinders and I am excited to be part of this project.”

Oscar Dronjak explains: “Working with James Michael is going to be very, very exciting. The two Motley Crue album James has been involved in (songwriter on NEW TATTOO and songwriter/producer on SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES) are great, and easily stack up against the classic albums of the ’80s. That, and the fact that HammerFall have used the same producer (Charlie Bauerfeind) since 2002 has me very psyched about this collaboration, it will automatically bring a freshness to the proceedings! A lot of what HF was got refined when we started working with Charlie, and I’m sure we’ll get a similar kind of reaction here. Sort of like a kick in the ass, to get going in the right direction.”

Vocalist Joacim Cans adds another important aspect: “I see James Michael as one of my favorite singers of today and his work with Sixx:AM is simply fantastic. Not only is the album one of the best ever made production-wise, but James also delivers a vocal performance that most singers today are not capable of. James will be the perfect co-producer for us and I really think he will be able to get me up a notch in the vocal department.”

The as-yet-untitled record will be released in Europe on May 20th.

*** PRESS RELEASE #8 ***
-Danger Danger’s Ted Poley Taps Caffery Guitarist For New Solo Band Lineup

Danger Danger vocalist Ted Poley announces the addition of guitarist/keyboardist Paul LaPlaca to his solo touring band. LaPlaca has previously worked with such acts as ZO2, Zandelle, and Chris Caffrey of Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Savatage. Poley’s current roster also includes drummer Dennis Leeflang (Lita Ford, Bumblefoot), guitarist Maz Mazza (40 Ft. Ringo, Detroit Cheeta), and bassist Doug Odell (All Pointz West, Ice Age). The new lineup is scheduled to make its live debut on December 3rd, 2010 at Klubben Fryshuset in Sweden.

Paul’s inclusion in Ted’s touring band continues a busy year for the multi-talented musician, which most recently saw him serving as associate producer of the new album from SplitScreen Entertainment, WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: AN ALL-STAR SALUTE TO FAT CHICKS. For this unique project, LaPlaca produced five tracks in total, working with members of L.A. Guns, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P., and Twisted Sister.

“It’s just been a crazy year so far and every day is completely different,” states the in-demand Paul LaPlaca. “Working on the WHOLE LOTTA LOVE album was an incredible experience, with so many different styles and such outstanding musicians. After that I was able to squeeze in some tech duties for one of my all-time favorite bands, Living Colour. In between I worked a Disney fashion show and manned a camera for insanely talented drummer Jojo Mayer. I was even flown from New York to Tampa to shoot a product demo for Rocktron. Now instead of taking a break, I’m preparing for the European festival date with Ted Poley, a reunion show with members of October Thorns and a live set of metalized Hanukkah favorites with NY’s own Gods Of Fire. I guess I can sleep when I’m DEAD!”

Making LaPlaca’s induction into Poley’s band all the more appropriate is the fact that he’d previously produced a song called “Ted Poley” for the 2008 tribute album KISS MY ANKH: A TRIBUTE TO VINNIE VINCENT. A parody of the Kiss song “Unholy” by Vincent and Gene Simmons, the song was performed by rock & roll comic C.C. Banana and even featured current Poley bandmate Dennis Leeflang on drums. The track has proven to be a favorite with Ted’s fans and has been used to open his solo shows ever since.

Considering that Poley himself recently signed with ARM Entertainment (management firm of such notable talent as Bret Michaels, L.A. Guns, and Dokken), Paul anticipates keeping busy for foreseeable future.

Overdrive – Deal Set For New Album ANGELMAKER

Classic Swedish metal merchants Overdrive have signed a new licensing deal with Lion Music for the upcoming album ANGELMAKER, due out in January 2011. This time the band wrote and recorded 18 songs of which 12 are set to appear on the album.

“This time we used a panel of 15 people to help us select which tracks to use. It was really great to hear what people outside of the band thought of the tracks before we decided on which to put on the album. Some of our own favourites were not as high up on the list as expected, while others were higher than expected, which was interesting. Hopefully our listening panel reflects the general public, which then would make this a killer album,” says guitarist Janne Stark.

The album was recorded by the band and Johan Blomquist (Blinded Colony, Kaptain Sun, etc.) and mixed by Pelle Saether (Grand Design, Diabolical, Wolf) at Studio Underground.

“I have been working with Pelle on several other recordings, such as Locomotive Breath, Mountain Of Power, and Zello, and he has an ability to understand and capture just the sound you’re after. He did that this time, too. To be honest this is the best sounding Overdrive album to date,” Janne continues.

Overdrive still features original members Janne Stark and Kjell Jacobsson on guitars, Kenth Ericsson on bass and Kenta Svensson on drums, plus vocalist Per “PeiolOz” Karlsson who joined the band at the reunion in 2003 and has since been an integral part of the band.

On December 3rd Overdrive will support Pretty Maids in Karlshamn (SWE), where the bands actually did a show together back in 1983!

Some Reviews of LAST TRAIN HOME:

“The lead guitar of Bryan Bassett is outstanding on the disc, pure electricity in every note. Listen to the lead solos on the first two songs — ‘Born For The Road’ or ‘Needle & Spoon’ (over a minute of electric guitar bliss) — to become a convert of the new Foghat faithful instantly . . . This blues themed album was a dream project of the late Foghat vocalist ‘Lonesome’ Dave Peverett, and Charlie Huhn honors him well. Huhn has the vocal chops to be everything Foghat needs him to be…”
– Goldmine Pick of the Week 6/9/10 – by Pat Prince

“Artistically unassailable. Foghat has beaten all the odds and made a record that stands tall!”
– Hittin’ The Note Magazine

“…This CD is simply brilliant and should help re-establish Foghat as one of the most electrifying bands on the planet.”
– Rockmusicstar.com

“…Not only does this disc exceed expectations, it’s a thrilling listen returning Foghat to its blues roots complete with a guest appearance by the legendary Eddie ‘Bluesman’ Kirkland on the five minute scorcher ‘In My Dreams’ and the bar room boogie ‘Good Good Day…'”
– Cuttingedgerocks.com

“…The band’s original instrumental ‘495 Boogie’ roars out of the station and heads straight to New Orleans, with a rollicking groove, honky-tonk piano, rockabilly-tinged guitars, and bluesy overtones reminding one of Professor Longhair…”
– Reverend Keith A. Gordon – About.com

“…By the last track, it’s clear this lineup makes fine rockin’ boogie in the time honored Foghat tradition. Somewhere, Lonesome Dave is smiling ear to ear.”
– Vintage Guitar Magazine

-Cynthesis Sign To Sensory Records; Original Zero Hour Members Reunited

Sensory Records is ecstatic to announce the signing of Cynthesis, and the release of their upcoming debut album DEEVOLUTION.

Cynthesis is an entirely new band of its own, which also reunites three of the original members of progressive metal purveyors Zero Hour — founding twin brothers Jasun and Troy Tipton and original vocalist Erik Rosvold — for the first time on a recording since the band’s heralded 2001 album THE TOWERS OF AVARICE and 2003’s METAMORPHOSIS, both still considered landmark releases in the progressive metal community. After reaping massive critical acclaim from major international metal media, Zero Hour successfully toured Europe and performed at two different ProgPower USA Festivals, the band parted ways with Erik Rosvold, disappointing diehard fans of the band across the globe.

In late 2007, Jasun began writing material for Cynthesis. As the music developed he could only imagine one vocalist to really connect to the material. “I’ve always been a fan of Erik’s vocals and I knew his lyric-writing would be a perfect match for the material,” explains Jasun. After one phone call Erik was brought into the fold. Rounding out the lineup on drums is longtime friend Sean Flanegan, who not only played on Jasun’s 2000 instrumental release, NIGHT’S PULSE, but is best known for his amazing work with prog rock heroes, Enchant.

Sure to be a label priority for the new year, DEEVOLUTION tells the story of an elite group of leaders from a heavily industrialized city who find, brainwash, and then exploit an indigenous tribe’s shaman, believing he would be the perfect supreme leader. By propping him up as possessing all the answers to society’s ills the elites use him in order to gain and keep more control over the masses. They plan to influence the masses on several fronts: religion, media, consumerism, government. Jasun Tipton adds “Cynthesis allows us to explore new creative venues which provides a deeper listen. The band is very proud of DEEVOLUTION.”

DEEVOLUTION is in the process of being mixed by talented producer/engineer Dino Alden (Marty Friedman, Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Zero Hour), and the artwork commissioned to Dennis “Damn Engine” Sibeijn (Exodus, Dragonforce, Lamb Of God, H.I.M., etc.) coming together for worldwide release sometime via Sensory Records during the spring months of 2011.

Cynthesis lineup:
Jasun Tipton – Guitars and Keys
Troy Tipton – Bass
Erik Rosvold – Vocals
Sean Flanegan – Drums

Stay tuned for more updates on Cynthesis over the coming months as we announce more info in preparation of DEEVOLUTION!

-Two Brand New Releases From Progressive Promotion Records

Toxic Smile – I’M YOUR SAVIOUR
Label: Progressive Promotion Records (PPR CD 03)
Street Date: January 1, 2011
Genre: Artrock, Prog Metal

About Toxic Smile
Toxic Smile was founded by keyboard player Marek Arnold and drummer Daniel Zehe in January 1996. At this time both lived in Leipzig. The simple reason for starting the band was that they were fed up with playing student jazz all the time. So Toxic Smile was initially nothing but an alternative project of bored students of music. In May 1996, guitarist Uwe Reinholz joined the band. However, it took another two years to find the right vocalist. Since Larry B. entered Toxic Smile, his voice has been the special trademark of Toxic Smile’s sound. The band was completed by bass player Robert Brenner in January 2000. Till this time some demo tapes had already been recorded and the group soon started working on their debut CD MADNESS AND DESPAIR (at foen studio).

On October 1st 2000, Toxic Smile released M.A.D. (on F.act-records). The album was especially successful in Asia. BMG Seoul offered the band a major deal. Toxic Smile signed, of course!! Korean guitarist Ahn Hete supported the band as “special promotion guest” during their time with BMG. M.A.D. was supplemented with a couple of new tracks and received a new master mix. In August 2001, after signing the contract with BMG South Korea, M.A.D. was released in Asia. At the same time Toxic Smile played a promotional tour in South Korea. From October 2001 to November 2002 Toxic Smile spent most of their time writing songs for their second album. In December 2002, the band separated from BMG due to various differences regarding the recorded material and sales.

From February – April 2003, their sophomore album was recorded by Marek and Uwe at Wizard studios. During July and August 2003 mixing and mastering of the album took place at Famous Kitchen studios (Andy Horn). RETROTOX FORTE was finally released on March 15th, 2004 by Famous Kitchen. In the summer of 2004 the band started work on the classical project Waldenburg. In September 2004 Daniel suddenly left the band. Within two weeks Antonius Gruetzner was hired as Toxic Smile’s new drummer (and he proved to be a worthy substitute).

His first gig with the band was released on a limited DVD called LIVE AT THE PROGPARADE V. In February 2005, the rehearsals for the classical DVD TOXIC EXTENSION took place and the recording eventually happened in Waldenburg on March 5th. In November 2006, the DVD TOXIC SMILE IN CLASSIC EXTENSION was released.

During 2007 and 2008 all members worked more and more on their individual careers. Since then Toxic Smile has only existed as a studio project. Antonius left the band — not without recording drums for an upcoming EP release, though. Marek took care of the recording and mixing of that record. OVERDUE VISIT was finally released in June 2009 on Oliver Wenzler’s label Progressive Promotion Records.

In the meantime, Robert Eisfeld, founder and owner of Dresdner Drumfestival has taken over drum duties.

At last! After a six-year break, the long awaited new studio album will be released in early January. Toxic Smile are going for it and they’ve called in some prominent help. Markus Teske (producer of Vanden Plas) has engineered the nine tracks and thus given the album its final polish. So there is something to look forward to! The album offers the typical Toxic Smile blend — from catchy art rock with jazzy elements to powerful prog metal — while still sounding new and full of energy.

Larry B. – Vocal
Marek Arnold – Keyb. / sax
Uwe Reinholz – Guitar
Robert Brenner – Bass
Robert Eisfeld – Drums

1. Liquid Wall (9:10)
2. The Change (5:37)

8. Poles Apart (5:16)
9. I’m Your Saviour (8:00)

Label: Progressive Promotion Records (PPR CD 02)
Street Date: September 17, 2010
Genre: Progressive Rock, Artrock Neo Prog

About The Band
InVertigo: this means a blend of art rock and fine neo-prog, situated somewhere between complexity and catchiness, epic structures and radio affinity, 11/8 and 4/4. InVertigo’s songs mirror influences by progressive rock bands such as Genesis, Yes, Spock’s Beard, Marillion, The Flower Kings, or Porcupine Tree — but do sound completely different.

Symphonic compositions, multilayered arrangements, variations of key, tempo and rhythm, constant changes and surprising twists make up their songs. And yet: InVertigo make sure the songs’ musical content prevails. Even though the compositions are usually quite long, the song itself and demanding but catchy melodies are the primary focus.

Sebastian Brennert, Matthias Hommel, Michael Kuchen-becker, Andre Lente, and Jacques Moch have been performing their songs live for quite a while: supporting progressive rock favourites such as Alias Eye, Sylvan, Pure Reason Revolution, or being part of the pROCKfest lineup, they have always received enthusiastic feedback by audiences and critics. The Empire magazine, for instance, stated, “There’s a lot of potential in this band — keep it going!” Now, the time is really ripe for InVertigo’s debut album.

With NEXT STOP VERTIGO, the five musicians from Germany’s Ruhr area deliver a multifaceted modern prog rock album: the tight atmosphere and tension of songs such as the opening track, “Vertigo,” or the multi-layered “The Night,” put listeners under their spell at once. While “Take Your Time” and “Night On Broadway” offer a clear invitation to rock and roll, “Saturday Evening” and the mini-musical-esque “Special” are beautifully arranged long tracks that bear anthem qualities.

The Band:
Sebastian Brennert – Voice, Keyboards
Matthias Hommel – Bass
Michael Kuchenbecker – Keyboards
Andre Lente – Drums
Jacques Moch – Guitars

1. Vertigo (7:27)
2. The Night (8:57)
3. Special (12:23)
4. Take Your Time (7:46)
5. Night On Broadway (7:18)
6. Saturday Evening (8:33)

bob K plays its melodic arena rock with much emotional energy, and offers a grandiose sound with dynamic arrangements accompanied by new thinking variations on the Scandinavian rock tradition.

bob K in its long journey has included everything from small club gigs for 40 people to arena concerts with 10,000 festival participants in the audience. Since the start in 2000, bob K approaches 100 concerts around Scandinavia and the Baltic states. Here, the band really has found its audience. The studio productions have been given both honours in magazine reviews, and played on radio in these countries. In 2002 bob K won a talent contest for bands, that led to the first single Keeper Of My Soul.

Shortly afterwards bob K got signed to the record label Eckworks, that released the self-titled album bob K and two singles, “Believe” and “You Make Me Sing.” In 2008 the band released the single “Save Me” on their own label. From that point the musical direction changed from the previously pretty slick sound, towards a more emotionally driven and atmospheric rock. Something that emerged as new members joined the band and come up with interesting musical influences.

After another single release, “Morningstar,” and ten years as a band, bob K now releases the second album called FRAGILE worldwide in 2010. A major production where the magnificent and atmospheric face emotive vocals, beautiful string arrangements and honest lyrics. A 12-track parade which together makes a journey through life as a fragile human being.

Bob K is Swedsish melodic bombastic melodic arena rock in the finest possible way!

Peter Dalhoff – lead vocals, keyboards
Lorens Palmgren – synthesizers, vocals
Jonatan Samuelsson – guitar, vocals

Safemode started in the spring of 2007. At first, we struggled to find our own sound. Our music went from being just melodic rock, to a more aggressive style. We started to do shows, mostly local but even in other cities in Sweden. Many songs were written, changed and deleted. Our sound continued to envelope and even our musical skills.

In the end of 2008 we went into the studio to record an EP. We got some help from Marcus Dahlström, the drummer in Blindside.

In 2009 they won Rock Karusellen, one of the biggest band competitions in Sweden. With over 600 bands Safemode reached 1st place. After that they went out on the roads and tour in Sweden for three months and then did a tour in Germany.

2010 became a year of write and record the album. 2010/2011 a release tour came up and they have now some upcoming tours outside Europe/ South America in the beginning of next year. The future looks bright for Safemode!

-Suicidal Tendencies Forced To Postpone Remaining Tour Dates

In a collective statement from crossover kings Suicidal Tendencies: “Sunday Night ST played NYC to 2,000 old and newschool Cycos! It’s always great to hit the East Coast and catch up with a lot of our friends, bands and family. Unfortunately the NYC show will be the last show of this tour. Sadly, one of the band members had a parent pass away suddenly and needed to fly home to be with his family in this difficult time and handle all the funeral arrangements, etc. With heavy hearts, the band decided it would be best to postpone the remaining ST shows and make them up sometime next year. We appreciate your understanding, your thoughts and your prayers. Please give us a few days and we will try and let those who already have tickets how how to get refunds, etc. Again, we are so sorry to have to postpone these shows, but hope that everyone will be able to understand, and we’ll do our best to make the dates up.”

-Candlelight New/Upcoming Release Info; U.S. Branch Prepares For 10th Anniversary

Candlelight Records have released an array of high quality albums this Autumn. Below is a brief wrap-up of the current new releases, and some of the amazing media reactions on each.

The second album from Philadelphia’s Woe has been finding solid early interest. Stereogum says, “Woe’s excellent QUIETLY, UNDRAMATICALLY sounds like what black metal from Philly should sound like, i.e. rough, dirty, dangerous, ballsy, no-bullsh*t.” MetalSucks says, “Woe have managed to craft something that gives you a good sense of the possibilities still existent in the genre. Undramatic my ass. This is the sound of black metal to come.” Released on October 12, the album is one fans of black metal (new and old) should not miss. Woe just completed a series of performances on the east coast (with friends/label mates Krieg). More shows will be announced shortly.

Krieg return after a four-year hiatus with the release of THE ISOLATIONIST. Noisecreep notes “Krieg have been terrorizing audiences and throwing a defiant middle finger in the air to all that oppose their nihilistic, anti-human views and vicious take on the blackened art since 1995.” Roadburn says the album has, “got all the black metal hallmarks tweaked to provide maximum effectiveness… The mood is suffocating and bleak. It’s relentless hideousness is truly a thing to behold, and with it, Krieg ably prove themselves as major contributors to US black metal.” Krieg are finalizing plans for performances on the West Coast in early 2011; state tuned for details.

Fans have waited more than a decade to see if Sweden’s October Tide would craft another doom masterpiece. With A THIN SHELL their wish has been granted. Blistering.com says, “A THIN SHELL is an emotional pummeler; the type of album that leaves you out in the cold, but makes you come back for more. Brilliant.” Metal Review adds, “this seven-track doom/death metal trek through downtrodden atmosphere takes a chance or two, and it results in a very current and invigorating collection of songs.” Featuring former Katatonia guitarist Fredrik Norrman, October Tide is a record perfect for those dark autumn nights.

Winterfylleth are set to perform as part of the upcoming CandleFest in London on November 20. Their second album, THE MERCIAN SPHERE has been impressing European audiences and now its charm is available for American metalheads. Metal Underground says, “THE MERCIAN SPHERE succeeds in many ways as a record that can mesh the genre of folk with the extreme nature of black metal in a way that comes of sounding very British.” About.com adds, “Winterfylleth’s folk-ish black metal is performed with a meticulous attention to detail on their gripping second album.” It is definitely a record to seek out for a listen.

Reviewing ENGAGE THE MECHANICALITY, the new album from Kansas-based Diskreet, TheNewReview writes, “Diskreet has created an absolutely punishing album filled to the brim with technical musicianship skillfully balanced with enough brute strength to keep the listener suspended by the throat for the entire ride. No frills, no fluff, just straight up audible obliteration.” Released on October 26, ENGAGE THE MECHANICALITY follows the band’s popular 2007 EP, INFERNAL RISE. Metal Register says, “Diskreet somehow manages the unlikely blend of blinding intensity, disguised melodies, and awe-inspiring riffage into a unique style of death metal.”

OMINOUS is the debut album from Norway’s The Wretched End. Featuring guitarist Samoth (Emperor, Zyklon), Cosmo (Mindgrinder, Scum) and Nils Fjellstrom (In Battle, Dark Funeral), the band has chiseled out a punishing album of intensely brutal metal. Apesh*t.org jumped out early on review of the album saying, “OMINOUS embodies the qualities that (extreme) metal should possess: fierceness, technical prowess, great riffs, and a fist in the face delivery.” Metal Register adds, “OMINOUS is an amalgamation of both new and old styles of metal. From raw, driving vocals to shredding guitars to blast-beat drums, fans of thrash, death, and black metal will appreciate this album in the fact that is created on an unbiased template, though all three styles remain distinct.”

In 2011, Candlelight celebrates its 10-Year Anniversary in the US! We kick off the year with releases from several new label artists.

There is nobody like England’s The Meads Of Asphodel. Their label debut, THE MURDER OF JESUS THE JEW, has been making incredible waves with European media on its most recent release. Americans are in for quite a treat with this album. Chronicles Of Chaos says, “The Meads Of Asphodel have forged a path that can only be described as unorthodox, fusing together a multitude of genres flawlessly.” Live 4 Metal adds, “their quirky Englishness, mixed with their flirtation with black metal and of course their crusty punk underbelly never fails to both amuse and impress.” If you are up for the challenge, THE MURDER OF JESUS THE JEW will hit US and Canadian stores on January 11.

STORM MANIFESTO is a special box set that spans the career of Norway’s Zyklon. Featuring Emperor guitarist Samoth and drummer Trym with Myrkskog vocalist Secthdamon and guitarist Destructhor, Storm Manifesto contains all three of the band’s amazing albums plus previously unavailable material. Mark a reminder on your calendar to head to your favorite record shop on January 11.

Also coming in January we have label debuts from England’s Eastern Front, Holland’s Obsidian, and India’s Demonic Resurrection. January will also see the release of Kryoburn’s second album, THREE YEARS ECLIPSED.

-While Heaven Wept Says Goodbye To Cruz Del Sur Music

We have been holding this statement for a few months now, and it is finally time to announce: Cruz del Sur Music recording artists While Heaven Wept will no longer be part of the label’s roster. The label are thrilled, but also sad, to state that While Heaven Wept have signed a new record deal with Nuclear Blast Records.

The following are the press releases from the three parties involved. It is an important moment for Cruz Del Sur, passing the torch on to Nuclear Blast Records… may it keep on burning high!

“I started working with Tom Phillips on the release of what was going to be VAST OCEANS LACHRYMOSE in June 2006. Almost three and a half years later, the release of VOL hit the market provoking an amazing reaction from the people who already loved WHW, but also conquering thousands of new fans. From then on, it was an exciting ride which has seen the CD re-release of their long out-of-print previous albums, a series of glorious live shows and the peak represented by the forthcoming release of their first live album TRIUMPH: TRAGEDY: TRANSCENDENCE available in a CD/DVD limited edition and on vinyl on Cruz del Sur Music. It was inevitable that WHW would catch the interest of bigger labels and I am not angry or disillusioned at all. I mainly see their going to a respectable and leading label as Nuclear Blast as a honor and a recognition of our work.” — Enrico Leccese/Cruz Del Sur Music

“Nuclear Blast is extremely elated to announce the signing of While Heaven Wept! Last year we were totally blown away by the release of the album VAST OCEANS LACHRYMOSE (out on Cruz del Sur Music) from the US genre-defining and genre-defying metal band While Heaven Wept! After months of talking with mastermind Tom Philips we are very happy to announce that WHW has joined the Nuclear Family!! While Heaven Wept are already in the studio recording their follow-up album FEAR OF INFINITY which will be out April 2011.” — Jaap Wagemaker/Nuclear Blast A&R

“It made perfect sense for us to align with Nuclear Blast, who also have been committed to offering only the very best in the world of Heavy Metal. Through this partnership, we will surely be able to continue delivering the best productions possible while presenting our musical vision in a different arena, betraying neither our past nor our ideals. Nuclear Blast’s support of our musical identity is truly an honor, and everyone who has stood by us all along these years need not worry; While Heaven Wept is what it is, and cannot be anything else. Expect the unexpected. We look forward to revealing our new album FEAR OF INFINITY together with Nuclear Blast very soon!” — Tom Phillips/While Heaven Wept

-Buzzov•en Prepare For December West Coast Beatdown

Following a successful five-date tour this past October, which officially marked their first live performances in 12 years, North Carolina sludge merchants Buzzov•en will take their notoriously raw, crushing live act to the West Coast this December! Kicking off on December 13th, the band have confirmed a six-date rampage that will hit San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Denver, dragging out an incredible set list from their arsenal of brooding, scathing recordings they’ve amassed over the years.

Buzzov•en December 2010 West Coast Tour:
12/13/2010 The Ruby Room – San Diego, CA
12/14/2010 Ultra Violet – Los Angeles, CA
12/15/2010 DNA Lounge – San Francisco, CA
12/16/2010 Dante’s – Portland, OR

As with the successful October tour dates, the band’s reunited 1998 AT A LOSS LP lineup of Kirk Fisher on guitar and vocals, “Dixie” Dave Collins (Weedeater) on bass and vocals, and Ramzi Ateyeh (Sourvein) on drums, now also includes Sleepy Floyd (also of Sourvein) on second guitar. Check out some killer live footage, a tour poster for the December dates and more at http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=1719 .

Following their inception in 1990, Buzzov•en quickly created an incredible impact on music in general with their harsh, raging style of sludge metal, cementing them as both a purveying act of the genre, as well as a longtime great. After imploding and disbanding in 1999, the group revamped things and reformed in 2010, bringing their chaotic and caustic live rage back to the stage. Following the December tour, Buzzov•en will appear at 2011’s annual Roadburn Festival in Tillburg, Netherlands in April, as well as this year’s installment of the Maryland Death Fest in Baltimore in May.

Stay tuned for further transmissions regarding more live actions for these henchmen through the new year.

Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar. Your best friend recommends a new band to you. They go on and on about the band’s history, favorite songs, band member biographies, and so on. After a while, you’re interested enough to check out the band. You’re not going to rush out and buy the band’s entire discography; I mean you’re still getting acquainted with the band. So what is your best bet? A “Best of” CD, right? Well, friends, you have the chance to do this now with At Vance. Maybe like me, you haven’t heard of them until you started reading this review. Not only do they have a current “Best of” album, but it is jammed pack with songs going above and beyond what’s typical for compilation albums. There are two discs, which include hits, rare songs, Japanese bonus songs, cover songs, AND their take on timeless classical pieces by the likes of Vivaldi and Beethoven. I don’t know about you, but I think seeing a metal band cover songs from artists in the baroque era is quite a rarity. Actually At Vance is no stranger to classical elements, even proclaiming their sound to be “neo-classical power metal.” And this German powerhouse has sufficient experience — spawning eight albums in their career. Their “Best of” album, aptly named DECADE has an astonishing 37 songs and spans over two and a half hours. That’s a lot of metal to take on! Out of all the songs on the album, I personally got the most enjoyment out of the cover songs. At Vance adds totally tubular shredding to Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” as to make it sound unmistakably like a glam metal song. They seem to have an affinity for ABBA, covering three of their songs on DECADE: “The Winner Takes It All,” “Money Money,” and “S.O.S.” For each one, At Vance transforms the songs into something distinctly modern and much more metal. Perhaps it is that ABBA’s songs already have a pop/techno beat, that when worked on by power metal doctors, the result is something dazzling and electrifying! I couldn’t help but smile as I heard the opening riff to “Eye Of The Tiger” as it pulsated through my speakers. I think one of the most appealing things about this album is the diverse selection of songs. Later in the album, you get covers of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, Bach’s Invention No. 13, and Chopin’s Etude No. 4. Seriously, how often do you see any metal band cover a classical song, let alone several on one album? I can sense some hardcore metallers wrinkling their noses in disapproval, saying classical covers aren’t their bag. Well, let me tell you, At Vance uses their magic and contorts these elegant songs into something honestly worthy of the metal genre. Amid the intermittent cover songs, At Vance weaves in some of their own work — one of my favorites being, “Fallen Angel,” a supersonic lightning bolt of a song, raging with power metal goodness. Usually, I don’t go for compilation albums unless I’m a diehard fan. And for never hearing At Vance before, I must say, this album has so much going on, it is well worth the buy.

Ever feel like going on a drive just for the hell of it? Imagine it’s a random day in September and you have this strange compulsion to get away. You hop on the nearest expressway, pedal to the metal, and race onto an endless stretch of asphalt. The thoughts troubling you rush out of your head like a torrent of flash flood rainwater gushing into a ravine. Just relax. Reach for Fireball Ministry’s self-titled album and slide it into the slick CD player and let ‘er rip. While listening to FIREBALL MINISTRY, I couldn’t help but envisage that being the most quintessential of places to listen to the album. This is smooth, bluesy, relax-and-let-this-soak-in rock. It emits a Southern aroma, but these musicians actually hail from Cincinnati. But you wouldn’t know that by listening to them. Their heavily Southern based music sounds authentic, and who says you have to be from a certain neck of the woods to play a certain kind of music anyway? Indeed, Fireball Ministry have cultivated a charming blend of rock, stoner metal, and maybe a hint of jazz — just a whisper. I don’t mean to imply that the band themselves embody stoner metal in every sense of the word; I’m saying that the beat delves into mellow strands as to call to the stoner metallers. They’ll enjoy this kind of music. It’s the vocals of this band that firmly places them in rock and not in metal. The first track, “Hard Lines,” cruises in with steady jamming and kicks off the album down a truly rock n’ roll path. Towards the end, we’re tantalized with a short bout of guitar soloing. I liked it, because if it were too long, it just wouldn’t have felt right. “Fallen Believers” is the second track, and it changes gears, as if we’re driving into country territory. Acoustic guitar work plucks out a tune alongside the beat of a jingling drum. And the chanting style of the vocals stands out as something different too. “Thought It Out” manages to sound sad with the guitar. But this song is must have a split personality, subtly going back to a rockin’ mellow mood whenever it feels like it. “Common Enemy” is as heavy as it is oozing with power. The vocals never seem over exerted or in your face, but just right. You could fall into a dreamy, head-swaying trance listening to it. “Sleeping With Angels” is blackened with a hint of darkness, but once the vocals set in, the song breaks away a bit from its sorrowful ambience. The last track, “In Their Own Right,” stomps in with the electric surge of the guitar showing off some fancy finger work. The vocals are clean enough so that you can sing along if you wish, and you most likely will due to the catchiness of the choruses. In less than one minute, you get the blistering beauty of the guitars; a few lines of lyrics and an elegant segue into the chorus. This is easy-listening. The album, I feel is good for special occasions, or for the folks who appreciate rock over metal. Rock on, Fireball Ministry!

“Isolationist- n. A person who believes in or advocates isolation; specif., one who opposes the involvement of his or her own country in international alliances, agreements, etc.,” according to an online dictionary. How very fitting that Krieg should bestow a name to their newest album which summarily describes the band’s main man: Imperial. Though others are involved and manning the instruments, Imperial declares he is the sole member. Doing some research led me to a blog entry by Krieg which vehemently defends Krieg’s status as a nihilistic band. They’re not about politics. At all. They want to be crystal clear about that. And don’t go about thinking that nihilism somehow equates Satanism. Nope. Krieg does espouse the black metal moniker, but says you’d be dead wrong to associate them with the German black metal scene just because etymology would suggest the band’s name would place them in Germany. Krieg tries to isolate themselves from any and all of the preconceived notions that anyone might have about them. Krieg frontman Imperial ends his speech telling fans, “Krieg’s latest album THE ISOLATIONIST has been titled such for many reasons, one being that I isolate myself from these outside influences and movements. They have no place in my present life.” There’s that word again: isolation. I can give Krieg credit for eking out a 15 year lifespan in the black metal world, but I have to say, THE ISOLATIONIST wasn’t anything far superb. The competition is fierce these days. While their approach to writing is commendable, it is still not original. How many times have the themes of isolation, loneliness, apathy, and the like been told and retold in various degrees in metal albums? It’s a theme that I think is relatable to their audience. Yes, that is true. Musically, and like Krieg says, they are quite simply black metal. The album opens with a track titled, “No Future,” which upon playing, starts off utilizing a Rob Zombie tactic: it’s the audio of what sounds like an old school horror movie. The voice, a nasally sounding man, is muted under the surrealistic sounds of creepy background noise. The song then speeds into metaldom, drums raining down like terrifying storm, and vocals piercing the air like a dagger. The guitars are hidden behind the mayhem, but they’re doing their part to carry the song onward into the depths of hell. “Religion III” is a song where you get this doomy, tribal sound with the drums. Something in the background, barely audible, makes for an underlying creepy atmosphere. It sounds like a profusion of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, wings flapping mercilessly, waiting for a victim to attack. The song also stood out to me because it was completely instrumental. “Remission” was another odd one. It was another instrumental piece. I was annoyed that the first 30 seconds was just silence. By no means is this song melodic. Actually, it would be hard to call it a song. It’s got random noises being thrown in next to the repetitive hitting of the drums. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Other songs on the album are good for a listen if you’re in the mood for decent black metal. As for me, I need a little more pizazz, and more eccentricities to make my black metal enjoyable.

STYX – REGENERATION (B-) Styx & Gary Loizzo, 2010

Check out the nifty packaging for the latest CD by Styx, which also defines the word regeneration as “the act or process of regenerating.” What came to mind when I first heard about this is that Styx would revamp some of its greatest songs in the same vein that they rearranged the classic, “Fooling Yourself” into “Fooling Yourself (Palm Of Your Hands)” with Brian Wilson in 2003 on CYCLORAMA. No such luck or creativity here. REGENERATION is the rerecording of their most recognizable hits with newest members Lawrence Gowan (who joined in 1999) and former bassist for The Babys and Bad English, Ricky Phillips (who followed the exiting Glenn Burtnick in 2003, shortly after CYCLORAMA was released). One might theorize that this CD is “Lady ’95” déjà vu from STYX GREATEST HITS released in 1995. Back then, the record labels held some bands, songs, and rights in limbo, so Styx was able to get around the legal hassles by re-recording “Lady” with Tommy Shaw. What with the legal issues the band had with former singer (and now solo artist) Dennis DeYoung nearing the decade mark, it seems like that this is the case: getting around legal hassles by re-recording. Open up the nifty packaging to read the liner notes, and you will wonder how the band ever completed the work, what with each member of the band recording, engineering, and producing in different locations, and having two editors. The result? We are back to that Styx Perfection, but that perfection nearly makes you think of Styx as the Stepford band. Hearing Gowan sing “The Grand Illusion” and “Come Sail Away” in a studio version is definitely going to be different for those who have only heard DeYoung’s version live or on the radio. It’s great to have a Gowan version available without all the “white noise” of the live recordings that are out there. James (JY) Young’s take on “Lorelei” is a definite treat to have; the harmonies of the chorus are much better here than on the live versions I’ve heard over the years. Of course, we have Shaw taking lead on “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” without any surprises, but “Sing For The Day” sounds better here than on the original PIECES OF EIGHT. It is on “Crystal Ball” where Shaw’s voice is more crystalline and haunting than the original, and his lead guitar work is much more defined in bridge two. Styx tries to attract more sales with the addition of the only totally new song, “Difference In The World.” Only time will tell if this song will grow on the fans; the last one that they introduced by playing it regularly to the live audience was “One With Everything,” a song that still doesn’t quite have its legs yet. However, “One With Everything” is more of a hard rocking song with the Styx complexities their fans crave. “Difference In The World” doesn’t even come close to it. It may be hard to tell from this review, but I am what I would consider a diehard Styx fan — though I also do not subscribe to the train of thought that my favorite bands can do no wrong. I give this CD a “B-” rating because the songs (not including “Difference In The World”) are diamonds that will shine forever. As a fan though, buying all these reformulations of greatest hits is getting old, and I’d rather wait for a full CD of all-new music. Diehards, you will need to buy this; so far you’ll have to go to a show to do it (it’s not even offered yet on their own website — which has suffered from lazy web-management over the last couple years). Casual fans, unless you are really partial to “Difference In The World” (which I’d rate only a 5 on a 1-10 ratings scale), you can probably skip this one. And it really hurts to say that. Sorry Styx.
