-Okay, so, yeah I made a mistake last week. I was trying to be funny by saying issue #566 was “the upstairs neighbor of the beast” and then my friend Bill called me on it — “Hey dumbass, it should’ve said the DOWNSTAIRS neighbor of the beast!” Well, he didn’t say it *exactly* like that, but that is certainly what he meant. 🙂 – Tim

Band: Skin
Street Date: July 2010
Genre: Rock

Skin were formed in the early 1990s by ex-Jagged Edge members Myke Gray and Andy Robbins (also formerly of Tokyo Blade & Shogun) along with former Kooga vocalist Neville MacDonald and drummer Dicki Fliszar, formerly from Bruce Dickinson’s touring band and the band Vamp. Originally called Taste, they went through a number of names (Obsession, Bad For Good, Phoenix) as they played a smattering of small club dates throughout 1992. The band showed enough quality on these dates to be offered a management deal with Sanctuary Management, who also handled Iron Maiden and, ultimately, a record deal with Parlophone. Through Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, the band came to the attention of noted American producer Keith Olsen who offered to produce their debut at his Goodnight L.A. Studio. During 1993, the band flew to L.A. and began recording. Once the sessions were finished, the band listened to the finished product and decided more was needed so another three songs were recorded with Shay Baby producing.

Prior to the release of the album, the band finally decided upon the name Skin (someone had written it down on a wall) and embarked upon a 14-date UK tour supporting Little Angels. Another support tour, this time with Thunder, helped swell their growing fan base and, in 1993, they released their debut single THE SKIN UP EP. This was followed by “House Of Love” before their first UK chart single “Money,” which peaked at no 18. The debut album, entitled SKIN, sold even better, breaking into the top 10 and peaking at no 9. Another single from the album, “Tower Of Strength” which was backed with live material from their Donnington Monsters of Rock appearance, also broke into the top 20 and reached no 19.

1995 saw Skin consolidating their fan base by recording and releasing LIVE AT THE BORDERLINE. A very limited edition CD of classic rock cover versions given away free with Kerrang! magazine, only 50 were available and it has become one of the most prized collectors items among Skin fans although a Japanese import version was released shortly after. In order to capitalize upon their appearance at Gateshead Stadium supporting Bon Jovi, the band also recorded and released “Take Me Down To The River” as a double CD along with some of the BORDERLINE cuts.

The Bon Jovi appearance marked a high and low point in the career of Skin. A gig that would potentially give excellent exposure was marred by a fault with the band equipment as a voltage converter was incorrectly installed to USA settings by a stage tech which resulted in blowing Myke’s guitar amp and Colin’s hammond organ.

1996 marked the first time that touring keyboard player Colin McLeod was featured in promotional artwork as well as the music video for single “Perfect Day.” Despite this, Colin was a part time member as he wanted maintain a funk orientated direction he was continuing at the same time.

Neither the second album, LUCKY or the two singles, the first being “How Lucky You Are” and “Perfect Day,” achieved the chart success of the debut album. The progression of British chart music at this time, along with the lack of backing for rock music in the mainstream media, led to the band being dropped by Parlophone. Despite this, Skin still held a Japanese record contract and the third album BIG FAT SLICE OF LIFE was finished and released in 1997. Awaiting a UK release, the band released a self-financed two track CD single “Degeneration” that was distributed through the fan club. Later that same year they released their fourth, and final, studio album EXPERIENCE ELECTRIC on Snapper Music. It marked a revised version of the Japanese release with several tracks being re-worked. “Ride The Blue Wave” evolved into the title track from the album, but “Big Fat Slice Of Life” and “Degeneration” were omitted due to the fan club release. The album went on to top the indie charts at number 1. During this period, Skin toured relentlessly. The albums was shopped to several American record companies, and met with mogul Jonathan King. Following the culmination of the tour to promote the album, skin announced they would be embarking on their farewell tour in 1998.

The final Skin concert at the LA2 in London, was recorded and released as a double live album HASTA LA VISTA, BABY! on Reef Records (a subset of Snapper Music). Since the band’s demise, a number of unofficial releases have been issued featuring rare and unreleased tracks. These tracks combined of what would be the fifth UK album, and a large collection of demos that didn’t make it on the debut.

An odd twist of irony was that after the final gig, both EXPERIENCE ELECTRIC and HASTA LA VISTA, BABY! were released in North America for a limited time, and unknown to the band themselves. Despite this, Skin remained inactive from 1998, until it was announced on March 16, 2009 that Skin would be playing their first live show since 1998 at the Download Festival 2009, UK. Warm-up shows in London and Wolverhampton were announced, the London show quickly sold out and another London warm-up show was added.

After Skin’s successful appearance at the Download Festival the band decided to reform permanently. An acoustic album titled UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL was released shortly after with a brief UK tour in the winter of 2009. Following this, a new album was being written for release in the summer of 2010, following another appearance at the Download Festival and a UK tour.

George Bellas To Commence Recording Of New Album

George Bellas has recently composed a new album that is chock-full of epic themes, rich harmonic underpinnings, intricate rhythms and advanced forms. Recording is scheduled to commence in November 2010. As with his latest release THE DAWN OF TIME, drumming legend Marco Minnemann will once again be laying down the drum tracks. Further details regarding this new album will be revealed through progress reports during the production process. Prepare for some exquisite romanticism.

Album Title & Release Date To Be Announced

All parts for the entire album have been scored and are now just waiting to be recorded. The music is heavily immersed in romanticism and is moulded using some complex developmental forms that have not appeared on previous releases. Some pieces are of short to moderate length while others are just under or exceed the 10-minute mark. The album has a total running time of approximately 80 minutes.

Much of the thematic material on this upcoming release was developed within very elaborate forms. The melodies were of utmost importance and much focus was devoted to developing them through various composing techniques. The harmonic schemes are colourfully rich and diverse. And of course, the unique rhythms used are a recognizable staple of George’s style.

Epic themes and grandiose forms packed into an 80-minute new album!

Venturia Undergo Lineup Change As They Prepare For Third Album

French progressive metallers Venturia have recently undergone some lineup changes as they’re about to enter the studio at the end of November to record their third studio album entitled STRAIGHT, a title that represents the efficient and catchy nature of the new tunes that have already been penned.

Guitarist Charly Sahona comments, “First, bassist Thomas James Potrel decided to quit Venturia in order to focus on different projects. It was really sad news for us as he brought a lot to the band. Thomas is an amazing guy and musician, we respect his artistic choices and wish him all the best in the world and we will miss him as well as always keeping a door open for him. We are delighted to announce that Thomas’ replacement is none other than our friend Franck Hermanny (Adagio) who is now an additional member as and when his Adagio schedule allows. We’re very excited and proud to have the opportunity to do some stuff together with Venturia. Secondly one half of Venturia’s dual vocal team Marc Ferreira will not be collaborating with the band anymore. There is no personal or artistic reason behind the decision but purely comes down to the economic times we are in. As longtime fans know the band is based in France yet Marc lives in the USA, as Venturia make no money (for the moment) asking somebody from the US to come and stay here in Europe for a recording, rehearsals involves a lot of money, more than the band makes at present and its no longer a viable position. Marc is a great musician and we wish the situation was different and I encourage everyone to check out his solo albums.”

As a result Charly Sahona will undertake lead male vocals to complement the exquisite female vocals of Lydie Robin. On his new dual role of guitarist/vocalist Sahona states “It’s a really big challenge for me and I will do all I can to deliver the best performances possible.” The lineup is completed by long-term drummer Diego Rapacchietti.

Those wishing to follow the band’s making of STRAIGHT can do so at the band’s official Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Venturia-Official/170250262985835 ) where during the recording of the album, all the different steps of the making of will be shown and commented by the band.

-Creation’s End N.Y.C. Record Release Show Confirmed

On Tuesday, November 9th, Sensory Records released A NEW BEGINNING, the stunningly infectious debut album from Creation’s End.

The band will perform live for the first time at a newly scheduled record release show in New York City, set to take place at Manhattan’s thunderous rock and roll hideout Ace Of Clubs on Friday December 3rd.

Creation’s End Record Release Show:
12/3/2010 Ace Of Clubs – New York, NY w/ The MP Project, Monstar Zero, Clearview

Further American and European tour dates for Creation’s End are being planned for the coming year, with a special appearance at Atlanta, Georgia’s annual ProgPower USA in September 2011 already confirmed, where they’ll perform alongside Therion, Sanctuary, Dream Evil, Arcturus and more.

Considered a progressive/power metal “supergroup” to many, the talented unit called Creation’s End is the brainchild of years of collaborative writing between guitarist Rudy Albert (ex-Zandelle) and drummer Dario Rodriguez. The duo rounded out the band’s stellar lineup for the record with well-known metallers Mike DiMeo (ex-Masterplan, ex-Riot), Marco Sfogli (James LaBrie Band), and Joe Black (Chris Caffery, ex-Zandelle). The stunning eight tracks these powerhouse musicians have formed on A NEW BEGINNING culminate their melodic, progressive, groove-laden, dark and crushing displays of incredible heavy metal into a simply incredible album, produced by John Macaluso (James LaBrie Band, Fool’s Game, ex-Ark, ex-TNT, ex-Yngwie Malsmteen) and mixed by engineer Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Yes, Nile, Cannibal Corpse).

“A NEW BEGINNING is dark, heavy, brooding, but always melodic, and while the performances of the band members are top-notch, the focus here seems to be more on the songs and less on displays of virtuoso capabilities.” 4/5 – Sea of Tranquility

“What the band produces is melodic power-metal that never disappoints or bores. It has a very New York edge to it and there is less of the folky elements that you find in some of the Scandinavian and European releases. Considering what is on show here, it’s not surprising that at least one James LaBrie Band (Dream Theater’s front man) alum is part of the band.” – Blogcritics

“One of the very interesting things of Creation’s End is how well all musicians come together in crafting very good sounding (and elaborate) songs that keep listeners engaged.” – Infernal Masquerade

About The Album
Formed from the ashes of the ’80s Christian rock band Whitecross is King James, established by guitarist Rex Carroll in the early ’90s. Carroll, who is a two-time winner of the Dove Award as well as a five-time HM Magazine Critic’s Darling for his fierce guitar work, wanted another creative piece in which he could musically develop. Together, with vocalist Jimi Bennett (ex-Sacred Fire, Viktor) and Stryper alumni, Robert Sweet and Tim Gaines, King James was born and soon inked a deal with Star Song Records to release their eponymous debut in 1993. Four years later, after a long break and regrouping, King James issued the sophomore effort entitled THE FALL in 1997. The 2010 Collector’s Edition from Retroactive Records includes a much needed facelift with all new artwork in addition to a full-metal re-master by the amazing J Powell (Titanic, Final Axe, Bride, and Malice). This album was originally released in Europe, then twice in the USA — and they sold so fast that this classic has been out of print for almost ten years. That means it’s a great album and there’s demand for it! The music is mean and the guitars are nasty, reminiscent of the aggressive metal of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Holy Soldier, and Black Sabbath. THE FALL features a haunting, ponderous sound that sometimes flirts with the sophisticated progressive elegance of Queensryche. It’s definitely a moody, portentous affair, filled with plenty of inspired riffing from Rex and hair-tossed wailing from Jimi!

Scott Waters/Ultimatum: “Rex and Jimi Bennett together create a monster of a heavy metal record. A couple songs even come off as doomy, not unlike Trouble.”

NoLifeTilMetal.com: “Rex Carroll is known for his guitar shredding antics. To confine him to just playing simple riffs would be a crime. Thankfully, King James didn’t follow this trend and Rex unleashes plenty of guitar fury on the album. All in all, King James plays on the strength of guitarist Rex Carroll!”

Cross Rhythms Magazine: “The album is tight; showcasing some superb musicianship!”

About The Album
The band recorded their southern/progressive rock masterpiece debut MOUNTAIN IN THE SKY (1984) in Pat Travers’ studio. The ’84 Vision release features Lynyrd Skynyrd members Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Billy Powell (piano), who were trying to cope with life after the tragic 1977 plan crash that killed three members of Skynyrd (and injuring the others) while the band was at the height of its popularity. Powell would tell the story of how Wilkeson had been pronounced dead at the scene when a “spirit-filled nurse laid hands on him and raised him from the dead.” Vision was where both men would find further healing, strength and help from the Almighty.

Powell would continue playing with Vision after the band signed with Heartland Records for a sophomore self-titled release in 1985. Five tracks from the debut would be completely re-recorded from the ground up, with significant differences in arrangement and production now that they were with a major label. Five other newly-penned songs were also recorded, one of which was the anthemic “Standing On The Rock” which Heaven’s Metal Magazine editor Doug Van Pelt would go on to claim was “one of the absolute best Christian rock songs of the era.” Powell’s keyboards, which made Skynyrd’s sound one of the most distinctive in rock and roll history, help Vision’s sound resonate with power and authority. Marshall’s crystal-clear rock voice (a la Steve Perry or Dennis DeYoung) brings clarity to a powerful message that continues to inspire and move people today. Vision put together all the necessities of a truly great rock band, combining elements of art rock with solid guitar-driven stadium rock. Marshall and company created a unique sound all their own that still sounds good 25+ years after it was first recorded! With prime riff-rockers from start to finish, this album is rock perfection. Steve Holland (founder of Molly Hatchett) is quoted as saying, “Vision — I don’t need no stinking Vision. I’m blind as a bat as it is… but this old bat has great hearing! And that’s all you need to know with these guys! Wow!” Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, VISION is about an indomitable will; about survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American and stubbornly resolute. After 10 years of reissuing Christian rock and metal classics, this long out-of-print album has consistently been one of our most requested reissues. That’s why the label is thrilled to reissue it on CD for the very first time, re-mastered, with exclusive and insightful liner notes and 100% rock! For fans of Kansas, Styx, Mylon LeFevre and Lynyrd Skynyrd!

About The Album
In 1983, an Assembly of God youth pastor in Florida asked some of his kids to form a band and put on a concert for their youth group. Before long this youth group band would include people of great fame and notoriety who would give great witness of what God had done in their lives. Lead singer Rocco Marshall’s longtime friend, Leon Wilkeson (bassist from Lynyrd Skynyrd) joined the band. Before long, Leon’s Skynyrd band mate, pianist Billy Powell, was in jail for a fifth DUI and he asked Leon to visit him. Leon played Billy a Vision song called “Fight The Good Fight.” The song had such a powerful effect on Billy that he immediately joined the band!

Vision now had an impressive pedigree, featuring two members of mainstream rock superstars, Lynyrd Skynyrd! By 1984, the band would record their debut record as a custom self-titled release (now titled MOUNTAIN IN THE SKY, recorded in world renown guitarist Pat Travers’ studio with the Full Sail Dream Machine). With no distribution or promotion, this ’84 release has been ultra-rare and collectors have been willing to pay hundreds of dollars for this classic rock masterpiece. The album is nine songs of wall-to-wall brilliance — chock full of explosive vocal arrangements and indelible guitar riffs. Clearly cut from the ’70s (Kansas, Boston, Blue Oyster Cult), Vision knew how to bring it with infectious hooks, marked progressive rock edges and a huge, biting, melodic guitar attack full of hope-filled lyrics that cut to the heart! The Collector’s Edition exclusive bonus tracks for the Born Twice Records release are two powerful testimonies from Leon and Billy, sharing from their hearts about the difference God made in their lives. This superstar-studded band would go on to release a second album on Heartland Records in 1985 featuring several songs from MOUNTAIN IN THE SKY that were completely re-recorded (and quite different) for that album. In the words of HM Magazine editor, Doug Van Pelt (who contributes special liner notes in the reissue, “I’m confident that, like me, you’ll be really glad to hold this CD in your hands right now. It’s re-release-worthy classic material, indeed.”

About The Album
Like a lumbering freight train, The Rex Carroll Band got started slowly (they have been playing live shows since 2004) following the success of ’80s Christian metal legends, Whitecross, where Rex established himself as a guitar virtuoso of epic proportions (two Dove Awards & five consecutive HM Readers Guitar Hero Awards). But, Rex grew up in the ’70s rock scene where he was profoundly influenced by blues and southern rock standouts like The Allman Brothers Band, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jimi Hendrix. It is with great joy that Retroactive Records releases THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW as the debut disc from this Chicago power trio that fuses Rex’s fierce guitar skills with soulful, imaginative and heavy blues. “Foolsgold” is a scorching guitar instrumental showcasing Rex’s axeman-ship full scale (a la Eddie Van Halen or Yngwie Malmsteen) and it serves as the perfect intro to the riff-heavy “Working Man Blues.” While this album will appeal to fans of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Stevie Ray Vaughn, the mind-blowing, bluesy guitar heroics from start to finish establish The Rex Carroll Band as the choice band for those looking for air guitar inspiration! Get your leather vest and fire up your Harley-Davidson, because the blues tradition has just been elevated to a new level.

Brian Quincy Newcomb, ucc.org/news: “Rex Carroll has always been a serious guitarist, capable of shredding up a serious storm with amazing nuance and delicacy. But his playing exhibits not merely power, but a rich appreciation of melody and emotion, which more than suits the bluesy tenor of his latest music.”

DangerdogMusicReviews.com: “Drawing from diverse and formidable roots, Rex Carroll delivers emotional and fiery guitar work on his latest creation. From neo-classical metal fireworks to rough and tumble gritty blues, Carroll is the real deal and worth every minute of your time.”

Melodic.net: “Hard rock with heavy blues influences filled with groovy and melodic riffs that should please rock fans of Ritchie Kotzen, Glenn Hughes and The Jeff Healey Band.”

Ken Tamplin/Shout: “Rex has sustained the art of great guitar playing throughout the years. It’s more than obvious that Rex is on fire and his light shows no signs of dimming.”

-Rock Hard Magazine With Exclusive Kreator Live CD!

The December issue of Rock Hard magazine will be featuring an exclusive Kreator Live CD which will not be available in stores. TERROR PREVAILS – LIVE AT ROCK HARD FESTIVAL is an outstanding recording of an awesome, smashing live performance the Thrash quartet delivered this May in the Gelsenkirchen Amphitheater. “Now, Kreator have reached the top of their career so far. Their last three albums were placed #1 in our readers’ charts, and internationally, Kreator hold the fort, being second to none less than Slayer in their genre,” Rock Hard publisher Holger Stratmann rejoices, happy about the close collaboration with band leader Mille Petrozza. Rock Hard and Kreator go back a long way, being pals since their early years. This fact — and the band’s anniversary, of course — is celebrated by the mag with an extensive cover story (11 pages!), many exclusive, historical pics, and a fresh photo session done in the Ruhr Museum in Essen, a very prominent location of the current capital of culture, Ruhr 2010.

In the story, Mille Petrozza delivers some insight into the early days of Kreator and his private history. “Mille is a typical immigrant kid of the Ruhr — who has come to make a living with his music and now is one of Germany’s most impressive musical representatives.”

The digi-pak CD (which is the first part of a live double album) will be the frosting on the cake of the upcoming issue.

Track list:
Choir Of The Damned (Intro)
The Pestilence
Hordes Of Chaos
Enemy Of God
Impossible Brutality
Endless Pain
Pleasure To Kill
Terrible Certainty

The second part will also be released exclusively by Rock Hard — the release date will be announced later. “The album is of outstanding quality and, in my humble opinion, a genre classic even now. It marks a highlight in the history of Rock Hard,” Stratmann comments this worldwide unique feat of supplementing a music mag with a live double album.

Mille Petrozza: “After 25 years, I want to give something back to the fans, especially the Rock Hard readers — this CD is meant as a ‘thank you’ for all their great support. Rock Hard Festival was one of our best performances this year, and we had planned to do something with the recordings anyway — the reactions to the gig were simply too enthusiastic.”

On November 17, the December issue of Rock Hard will be published in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with a circulation of 75,000 copies.

With Special guests appearance:
“The Mirror’s Eyes,” “…I Said Silence,” “2nd God” – death vocals by Dan Swanö (ex-Edge Of Sanity/ Nightingale)
“Sweet Enemy” – lead vocals by Devon Graves (ex-Psychotic Waltz / Deadsoul Tribe)

Swiss band Appearance Of Nothing was founded 2004 by Pat Gerber (vocals, guitar), Yves LĂĽthi (drums), Omar Cuna (bass), and Marc Petralito (keys). After a short experimental period the band began to write their own songs. Since then Pat and Omar both share the part as lead singers which adds additional variety to the songs.

In 2005 the first self-produced demo BEHIND CLOSED DOORS was released, which gained a lot of positive reaction, so the band decided, together with their new lead guitarist Peter Berger, to take a big step forward. In 2008 WASTED TIME (ESM174) was released and the band engaged Markus Teske as producer who worked together with famous bands such as Vanden Plas and Symphony X. What we have with this highly acclaimed release is a very symphonic and highly enjoyable sound that brings together the best elements of Dream Theater, Symphony X, Saga, and Vanden Plas. Arrangements are grand and lush with powerful keyboard passages and strutting guitars, all backed with a great rhythm section.

In the years 2008/2009 Appearance Of Nothing concentrated on playing headliner shows, as well as shows as suporting act of Gurd and at the Swiss Raw festival in front of 4,000 people on the main stage. It’s 2010 and Appearance Of Nothing have a new recording: ALL GODS ARE GONE. The album has a considerably more aggressive and more modern attitude. Not only the sound but also the collaboration with vocalist Dan Swanö (ex-Edge Of Sanity/Nightingale). The first track “The Mirror’s Eyes” is actually a follow-up to the song “Man In The Mirror” from WASTED TIME. This is one seriously good recording, although with a more modern approach this new release should see the band attracting new fans as well as keeping their current fan base more than happy. A truly epic release.

-Bristol Palin Tosses Aside Her Dancing Shoes To Shoot A Music Video With Anchorage Based Alt-Rock Power Trio Static Cycle — In An Ice Museum In Alaska

While the competition heats up week after week on “Dancing With The Stars,” Bristol Palin found a clever way to keep super cool: starring with Static Cycle in a music video for “Inside This World Of Mine,” the symphonic rock driven debut single by the Anchorage based power trio’s upcoming EP, PART 1: HYDRATE.

Keeping up with her on-again, off-again boyfriend and father of her baby Levi Johnston — who recently made his music video debut in a clip with Brittani Senser — the daughter of former Alaska governor and VP candidate Sarah Palin joined the band for filming at the world renowned Ice Museum in Chena, Alaska. The band shot additional footage on an actual ice glacier also located in Chena.

Bristol stars in a Mother Nature type role, wearing a mink coat and mink hat and sporting ice on her eyebrows and eyelashes. She’s also seen clutching a rose under glass.

A snippet of the video recently appeared on “Entertainment Tonight,” causing the expected media stir.

“We met Bristol through family and mutual friends, and she was as excited about starring in our video as we were to work with her,” says Static Cycle lead vocalist and guitarist Jared Navarre, who also hails from Wasilla. “We all had a great time doing this shoot, and she looked absolutely gorgeous!”

The band has been burning up the indie music scene in Anchorage, Alaska since 2007, rocking everything from local clubs to the Egan Convention Center. Over the past two years, the band has not only become the biggest band in Alaska, but also a nationally recognized act, touring 14 states in the U.S. and sharing stages with Seether, Puddle Of Mudd, Eve6, Emery and 36 Crazyfists. In August, the band performed at the Alaska State Fair, a 12-day event whose lineup included Collective Soul, Shinedown, Kenny Rogers, Lonestar and Boyz II Men.

The band breaks the mold not only with its eclectic music, but also with a unique marketing approach where their debut will be released in two EP installments, digitally and in CD format, rather than as a single full length project.

-M.A.D. (Maniacal Area Damage) And 7Hard Proudly Present The Video Clips To The Actual Album FOR CROWN AND RING

“Don’t Sell Your Soul”

The opener of the album rocks really hard.

“Nutbush City Limits”

A cover version of the well-known Tina Turner classics was packed on the CD by the guys of M.A.D. just for fun — and it is fun!!

Statement from M.A.D.:

“It is awesome. When we saw it first, we were totally flashed!! The Guys around Nicolai and form ‘Ziggy’ did a real great job and we think the result is fun and very impressive. And Chris Haller does a great Sax performance on the stage — perhaps we should ask him if he’d do some gigs with us…”

About “Don’t Sell Your Soul” from http://www.rockreport.be/ :

“Musically the 10 tracks included in this package fall straight into the ’80s hard rock category and from the moment opening cut ‘Don’t Sell Your Soul’ kicks in the listener is transported back to that glorious period in the history of music. One band that immediately came to mind when the sounds of ‘Don’t Sell Your Soul’ poured into my living room was that of fellow German rockers Accept in that is in no small part thanks to the voice of Jochen S. Bach which is a mix of Udo (Accept), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), and Bon Scott.”

About “Nutbush” — translated from German Magazine “Breakout” 03/2009:

“…the riffs are coming extremely dirty, rough but nevertheless simple out of the speakers; firm riffs, that even help the old Tina Turner rocker ‘Nutbush City Limits’ (with saxophone solo) to blaze in new glory…”

M.A.D. (Maniacal Area Damage) — that is finest hard rock from Ingolstadt in good old Germany that comes along with a touch of “True Metal.” The Guys whose ambitions are to live the rock ‘n’ roll and to entertain, call this style “True Rock ‘n’ Roll” or even “True Rock.” That’s why they act upon the maxim: “To hell with the assimilation! Permitted is everything that rocks hard and is fun for us and the audience!”

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Update

[Note: This is a compilation of several updates. – Tim]

Two Side Moon Promotions are very excited to welcome to the party Bulgaria’s Rampart.

Please find below the text info for the new album VOICE OF THE WILDERNESS.

Band: Rampart
Label: Inferno Records (France)
Street Date: UK, November 2010
Genre: Heavy Metal

http://www.mediafire.com/?u2953pg7waytvdg (EPK)

The Bulgarian heavy metal band Rampart was formed in 2006 by the guitar player Yavor Kamenov and the drummer Borislav Glavev. They invited the vocalist Maria D. S. to join their project. The three-piece went on to write songs and recorded the stuff as a trio. Yavor is the author of the music and the arrangement of the compositions. Maria wrote the band’s lyrics. Rampart means bastion, fortification. The mission of the band is to be a bastion of the traditional heavy metal.

On August 8, 2008 the band released their debut demo WARRIORS. It has a good feedback from the metal media. In the beginning of 2009 Rampart were joined by the guitar player Victor Georgiev and the bass player Alexander Spiridonov. They took active part in the band’s concert life.

In April 2009 the band signed to the French label Inferno Records for the release of their first album VOICE OF THE WILDERNESS. As a guest musician in the recordings of the ballad “Age Of Steel” took part Sofia Vancheva (violins, viola and cello). VOICE OF THE WILDERNESS is filled with melodies, technical double guitar solos and strong rhythm ground.

In 2010 Rampart appeared in two American compilations: KILL CITY VOL. 22 (released by the Hollywood based label 272 Records) and DJ METAL DADDY’S FAVORITE CUTS (a promo compilation of the US “Warriors Of Metal” Festival 2010, released by Farvahar Records). Rampart are also chosen by the Norwegian label Epicus Records to take part in a tribute album to Helloween and Gamma Ray. The band recorded the Helloween cover song “Just A Little Sign.” The release called HELLORAY will be out till the end of 2010.

Currently the band is working on second album BLOODY SYMPHONY to be released in 2011. The music of Rampart follows the concept that life is frequently a range of people and events, which earn the taste of something we lived through, something exciting — the apparition of the original melodic metal and the reality of the traditional NWOBHM metal. The band keeps the true spirit alive!

Two Side Moon Promotions are excited to welcome to the team Party Tonight from Italy!

Please find below the text info for the new album ROCK ‘N’ ROLL FOR THE MASSES.

Band: Party Tonight
Label: Red Pony Records
Release Date: March 2010
Genre: Hard Rock

Party Tonight is a Rock & Roll project which takes inspiration from the hoarse voice of Scott Weiland who once said: “There is a f*cking party tonight!” We thought it could have been a great name for a band so here we are.

Our aim is to give new sounds, new colours and new life to a relic R&R scene living on the shoulders of ’70s and ’80s bands.

We started in 2005 with this intent and the great will to bring unique and special live shows to all audiences. Since then we attended many events and released in 2007 our first EP C’MON GIRLS with the single “There Is A Party Tonight.”

In 2008 we had a lineup change with Mike joining the project taking our lineup to: Michelle and Chris as singers, elChegue and Jack at the guitars, Lenny at the bass, and Mike behind the drums.

In March 2010 we published our first album ROCK & ROLL FOR THE MASSES under GetRocked Promotion and to support the record we had several radio interviews, one of which with Radio Popolare, a famous italian FM radio broadcaster. We also had a single out of it called “F**k You Goodbye” and made a video which is available on YouTube.

Marc “KWall” Kowalski is the founder, music writer, and guitarist of Smell My Pillow born in Minneapolis, MN. Marc grew up in a family of musicians and started playing guitar at age 8. Former bands include: Deck O’ Squares (Boston) (with former members of the Modern Lovers, Human Sexual Response, the 2X4’s, and The Classic Ruins), LeeKy BeeTs (Mpls), Tim Mahoney, Retail, and other side projects. Influences include Peter Frampton, Early Chicago, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Boston, many one-hit wonders from the ’70s, new wave of the early ’80s (namely The Cars, Gary Numan, Devo, The Police, and Trio), and the grunge explosion in the early ’90s (namely Soundgarden and Nirvana).

Mike Matheson is the lyrical storyteller for Smell My Pillow. His musical influences include a variety of artists that would fill this page if allowed (he was cut off as happens often when talking to him). Before hooking up with Marc, he spent his weekends singing with any band that would allow him to take the microphone for a song or two. Self professed Karaoke whore.

Bass player and St. Paul MN native Brian LaMere has been playing in the Twin Cities music scene for many years. Bands include; 8 Foot 4, Kenny McMahon and Friends, The Groove Rule, and Donkey Punch.

Drummer extraordinaire, Troy Berg, started playing drums at the age of 8 years old and was in his first band before his voice changed at age 13. Troy has recorded and toured with many great bands in the Twin Cities including St. Cry, Droplet, and Produkt with Greg Herriges and John Wright.

Band: Tubefreeks
Label: Tubefreeks Music (self)
Street Date: June 19, 2010
Genre: Hard Rock, Grunge Rock

Tubefreeks is a power rock trio based in the Baltimore, MD area. The group’s solid originality is fueled with the melodic heavy riffs and psychotic solos of guitarist Shawn Vickers combined with unique vocal stylings and harmonies of vocalist and bassist Paul van Valkenburgh. Throw in the brutal assault of drummer Geoff Burrell, and you’ve got a one-of-kind hard rock act.

Influences are numerous for the group and cover rock throughout the ages. Some key ones could include Sabbath / Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Metallica, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Pantera, and Deftones to name a few. The sound would be classified as straight hard rock, or potentially grunge rock.

Tubefreeks has just released a brand new CD titled COMPLEX DISORDERS with 12 new songs. Highlights include the songs “Aflagarden,” “Dumb Games,” “Split Down 40,” “Warm December,” and “Sequenze.” As the group was originally formed in the ’90s, they have also re-released 22 of the best songs from that era in a “Best Of The ’90s” CD. “A brilliant album” – Metal-Revolution.com

“What sets Scythia apart from the others is its specific attention to quality musicianship. The music is adventurous, creative, and epic.” – MetalUnderground.com

“I really enjoyed the first single, ‘Fierce Riders Of Scythia’ and I found myself immediately drawn into their world and once there, did not want to leave. The fascinating blend of metal and Russian/Middle Eastern folk music is quite surprising and exceptionally good.” – PureGrainAudio

“Tracks like ‘The Black Death’ and ‘Warrior’s Anthem’ serve as vast soundscapes versus standard metal tunes, that firmly place Scythia as a band of gypsy minstrels in this renaissance period of swashbuckling tales of swordplay. ” – Metal-Rules.com

“Scythia’s debut — an epic folk metal tale… most definitely a band that you should have in your private music collection. ” – Toronto Metal Examiner

“These folks can really shred their instruments… A creamy blend of heavy and melodic puts Scythia on par with contemporaries like Eluveitie and Glittertind… …OF WAR offers plenty of virtue” – ChartAttack.com

“Having already garnered a lot of attention on the local scene for their energetic live show and distinctive take on the folk metal genre, this up and coming 6-piece got the show started right… an entertaining performance and leaving a strong impression.” – ABORT Mag

“The strong card of Scythia is the orchestration and the combination of progressive metal riffs with synths and violins in a very melodic folk result… the progressive guitars and violins are ‘married’ perfectly (my favorite parts from the band)… an epic power metal approach.” – Heavy Metal Cosmos

WINTERFYLLETH – THE MERCIAN SPHERE (C+) Candlelight Records, 2010

Maybe I am not as deeply involved in the metal circuit as I need to be. Because as each new day passes, and I hear of yet another underground black metal band that I have previously never heard of; conspiracy theories abound. Is there an uprising of a new brand of black metal? Have those fond of the sub-genre renounced the symphonic/orchestral black metal as of late? Have they disowned their old school black metal parents to create something more refined and melancholy? I have my theories, because it cannot simply be a coincidence that so many bands are striving for this modernized, doomy, European-rooted style. I’m thinking there must be a ridiculously long, NWOBHM-type of acronym out there for this type of black metal. Maybe it’s on the tip of everyone’s tongue, waiting for a clever journalist to coin a name for them… Anywho, Winterfylleth, hailing from Manchester are another crystal-cut gem on the amulet of recent black metal. The band’s namesake translates to “Winter Full Moon” (who saw that coming?), in the Old English Anglo-Saxon language. I give them credit for digging into their heritage and paying homage to their ancestors, but “Winter Full Moon” is almost laughably, oh-so-stereotypical black metal. What else influences Winterfylleth? Why the majestic mountains, enchanting forests, haunting caves, pristine lakes; you know — outdoorsy stuff. Folklore and legends are employed and explored and used as a backbone for inspiration. Ancient Northern European, Viking, Celtic, and Medieval history are exploited. So, Winterfylleth hits the nail on the demonic head of all things concerning black metal. Imagine I tell you to think of when I say to imagine what a straightforward black metal voice sounds like? OK, that’s what Winterfylleth sounds like. It’s the agonized, blood-curdling, undecipherable shrieks that we’ve grown accustomed to. Winterfylleth traverses melodic territory and dabbles into the doom metal sea on its journey through THE MERCIAN SPHERE. The down tuned guitars sound sad, the drumming runs away at lightning speeds, and the vocals, while satanically raspy, are characteristically muted. The album runs on the long side, being over an hour. I felt it was too long for this type of music. With doom metal, and certain kinds of black metal, you need to be in the right mood to enjoy it. So that is why I will say, Winterfylleth is a band for fans of black metal, and doom metal. The band has enough talent to back them up, but nothing stands out as unique or amazing.
