BATTLE HYMNS 2011: Born To Live Forevermore

Finally, technology has caught up with Manowar’s custom-built touring and recording equipment. The band decided that their fans deserved to hear the songs from their debut album BATTLE HYMNS with the massive sound and production that has become their signature over recent years and records.

Due for release at the end of November 2010, BATTLE HYMNS will soon be available with the unbridled power of today’s technology: BATTLE HYMNS 2011.

With the decision to reinterpret the music came the need to revisit the famed narration of the legendary Orson Welles. There was only one obvious choice and that was Sir Christopher Lee. Recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London, his own inspired interpretation of the late, great Orson Welles on “Dark Avenger” will be another jewel in the crown of the Kings Of Metal.

Manowar Bassist and Producer Joey DeMaio stated: “My personal admiration for Sir Christopher began many years ago while watching his films. It increased when I was honored to produce him as a singer and as a narrator and we became friends instantly. Immediately after hearing the sheer power and range of his voice I thought I should write a narration; I never imagined we would ever rerecord BATTLE HYMNS — but here we are and it is massive.”

BATTLE HYMNS 2011 will feature two never released before live versions of “Death Tone” and “Fast Taker” recorded during the band’s very first concerts in 1982. These are the rarest bonus materials ever released to date in Manowar’s career.

“Our fans can be sure that we have squeezed every drop of power into BATTLE HYMNS 2011 that today’s technology allows,” says vocalist Eric Adams.

Manowar is poised to prove that both the band and the immortal BATTLE HYMNS record are indeed “Born To Live Forevermore.”

BATTLE HYMNS 2011 — a new chapter in Heavy Metal history.

Track List:
1. Death Tone
2. Metal Daze
3. Fast Taker
4. Shell Shock
5. Manowar
6. Dark Avenger
7. William’s Tale
8. Battle Hymn

9. Death Tone – Live

Virgin Steele will release their new album THE BLACK LIGHT BACCHANALIA on November 9th, in North America on SPV/Steamhammer. The album will be available as a limited edition digi-pak, a standard CD, double gatefold vinyl and digital download.

Track Listing:

1. By The Hammer of Zeus
2. Pagan Heart
3. The Bread Of Wickedness
4. The Orpheus Taboo
5. In A Dream Of Fire
6. Nepenthe
7. Necropolis (He Answers Them With Death)

9. To Crown Them With Halos Part 2
10. The Tortures Of The Damned
11. The Black Light Bacchanalia (The Age That Is To Come)
12. Eternal Regret

Vocalist David DeFeis commented on THE BLACK LIGHT BACCHANALIA: “It will be a long album… close to 80 minutes… The album (to be really brief), concerns the reversal of all things… Once conquered by invading cultures, older Pagan deities become the demons… of the new religion. THE BLACK LIGHT BACCHANALIA is a reversal of the sacred sexual customs, and the final desecration of the ‘Goddess Principle,’ switching from matrilineal descent to patrilineal descent, with the rise of the idea of the Mountain-Fire God… And it also has to do with ancient fears such as the fear of the sun not rising… Lyrically it is a kind of continuation of the story I told on the last album… Musically it is quite something else…”

Virgin Steele’s new worldwide deal with SPV/Steamhammer includes the reissue of the band’s entire back catalogue — from NOBLE SAVAGE onward. The back catalog will be made available throughout 2011, with faithfully restored covers and booklets, bonus tracks and liner notes.

-More Bands Confirmed To Play Sweden Rock 2011!

[Note: This combines two updates. – Tim]

Sweden Rock Festival
June 8-11, 2011 – Solvesborg

DENIM & LEATHER 30th Anniversary Show! Saxon To Sweden Rock Festival!

Saxon to Sweden Rock once again. Not only are they one of the biggest, most classic bands from the perennial New Wave of British Heavy Metal — they are also one of the bands the audience at SRF never get tired of seeing. Now they come to celebrate the fact that their classic album DENIM & LEATHER turns 30 years old and they will perform the whole album at next year’s Sweden Rock, of course spiced with a lot of other immortal Saxon classics and yes, they will bring the eagle!

Ozzy Osbourne Confirmed For Sweden Rock Festival!

There are famous artists, there are legendary ones — and there is Ozzy Osbourne. Not only is “the Prince of Darkness” one of hard rock’s most iconic characters, he has also remained at the very top of his career for longer than any of his peers. It began for real on Friday the 13th of February 1970, with the release of Black Sabbath’s eponymous debut — the Big bang in heavy music history. Until 1978 the band would release another seven albums featuring Ozzy’s uniquely scornful voice over ominous Doomsday riffs, in countless immortal tracks like “Paranoid,” “Iron Man” and “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.” 1980 saw the arrival of the singer’s solo debut BLIZZARD OF OZZ, another landmark release establishing the characteristic Ozzy sound with tough riffs combined with strong melodies. In the following years Ozzy’s status has grown to Olympic proportions. Events like the reunion of the original Black Sabbath and the controversial reality show “The Osbournes” have been commercial triumphs. However, his prime achievements remain the albums themselves. In 2010, SCREAM materialized as Ozzy’s tenth studio release, featuring the single “Let Me Hear You Scream.” The latter is the newest addition to an array of classic songs including “Crazy Train,” “Mr. Crowley,” “Bark At The Moon,” and “No More Tears.” To name but a few.

It is this heavy metal titan that in 2011 makes his very first appearance at SRF. Which will be his only Swedish appearance of the year, nonetheless.

Rhapsody Of Fire

Finally it’s time for Rhapsody Of Fire to play Sweden Rock. With THE COLD EMBRACE OF FEAR the band have arrived at their ninth full-length album, and in 2011 they make their highly anticipated return to the live scene. Including SRF, like so many of you have been yearning for so long.

Machistic rock, based on fat riffs, contagious choruses and a lethal groove is their simple but effective recipe for success. Mustasch will be back at the festival next summer.

Walter Trout

Next artist has developed his very own style as a blues and rock guitarist, examplified by his latest and 20th (!) solo record COMMON GROUND. We welcome Walter Trout to Sweden Rock 2011.

Last, but not least we proudly present legendary Groundhogs with guitarist Tony McPhee up front!

We can also present another three confirmed bands. American country/punk in the shape of classic Jason & The Scorchers, melodic speed metal — or call it US power metal — from Agent Steel, and Swedish prog from legendary Flasket Brinner (“The Pork Is Burning”).

Read more under Bands 2011:

Confirmed bands so far out of a total of around 70:

Ozzy Osbourne
Rhapsody Of Fire

-Tribunal Recores / Divebomb Records Update

[Note: This combines several updates. – Tim]

Elysium – INSPIRED HATRED Released On Divebomb Records

The earliest history of Elysium can be traced back to 1978 when Terry Allen (vocals/guitar) and Tim Jorgensen (drums) began writing songs and tracking demos in a basement but it wasn’t until 1988 that Elysium, as most fans knew them, began to take full shape. Despite being a new band Elysium found themselves playing an active part in the thriving Florida metal scene during the late eighties. Besides finding time to record their INSPIRED HATRED demo they were sharing stages with “local” bands like Death, Cynic, Malevolent Creation, Solstice, Nasty Savage and as well as touring acts like Trouble and King Diamond.

Elysium’s only recorded work arrived as the INSPIRED HATRED demo tape. This was not like any ordiniary demo of its time due to the exceptional production it showcased. INSPIRED HATRED’s high production value can be attributed to the fact that the band chose to work with engineer Tom Morris (Iced Earth, Morbid Angel, Coroner, Kreator, Sepultura) of the now and still legenadary Morrisound Studios.

Although Elysium found themselves recording at the traditional Floridian death metal headquarters they most definitely were not of the same ilk. Elysium instead chose a path of melodic and technical thrash metal. Speedy tempos, rapid fire riffs and a unique vocal rasp all helped to set Elysium off from the Floridian death metal pack. Like many fans of cult metal INSPIRED HATRED has always remained one of Divebomb Records’ favorite unreleased gems and we are extremely excited to now give this classic demo its first proper release on CD. This reissue not only includes the original INSPIRED HATRED demo tape, but also adds a bonus track and a full live set (video only) as part of an enhanced CD.

Chastain & Leather Reissues Coming On Divebomb Records

We are extremely excited to present two new reissues coming November 16th on Divebomb Records. Chastain’s FOR THOSE WHO DARE and Chastain vocalist, Leather’s solo outing, SHOCK WAVES. Both reissues feature 12-page full-color booklets with archival photos, informative essays by AOL Music’s Carlos Ramirez, re-mastered audio and brand new interviews with David T. Chastain and Leather Leone.

We are accepting PRE-ORDERS now:

Brief History

The spirit of Divebomb Records has always been to shine a light on metal and hard rock albums that, for whatever reason, never truly got the attention they deserved. We can’t think of better candidates for our reissue series than Chastain’s FOR THOSE WHO DARE (1990) and Leather’s SHOCK WAVES (1989) albums. Although he’s criminally overlooked in most “history of heavy metal” overviews, David T. Chastain is one of the most prolific and gifted guitarists the genre has ever birthed. Born in Georgia, Chastain first got on the metal scene’s radar with the band C.J.S.S. but it was the group that shared his surname where the whiz guitarist would make the most noise. After signing with Mike Varney’s legendary Shrapnel Records, Chastain released four critically acclaimed albums of fist rate European flavored metal. Knowing a good thing when they see it, the folks at Roadrunner Records snapped up the band for their fifth and finest moment, FOR THOSE WHO DARE.

Leather, the former front woman for Chastain, was born in Avon, NY and her muscular vocal performances had more in common with Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillan, than they did with say, Lee Aaron’s. After spending years on the East Coast club circuit, she finally got her break in 1984 when she became the vocalist for Chastain. Check out Chastain albums like 1988’s THE VOICE OF THE CULT or 1986’s RULER OF THE WASTELAND, and you’ll hear a singer with an intense presence and clear gift for delivery. Before Chastain got to work on FOR THOSE WHO DARE, there was other business to handle. Leather would get to release a solo album under the new Roadrunner Records deal. Originally released in 1989, SHOCK WAVES found Leather in fighting form. Her vocal performances had always packed punch, but on solo cuts like “All Your Neon” and “Diamonds Are For Real,” she delivered each line like her life depended on it. The album also showcased songwriting contributions from Pat O’Brien (Cannibal Corpse) and Mark Shelton (Manilla Road).

Although FOR THOSE WHO DARE and SHOCK WAVES didn’t commercially deliver the kinds of sales numbers that they both rightfully deserved, both are must-have releases for any fan of traditional heavy metal. This time out, the hope is that a new crop of metal enthusiasts will discover both albums and find out why Divebomb Records treated these projects with such love and attention.

-Hardcore Circus – WAKE UP CALL

Released: December 3, 2010
Label: Silverside Records

Specials: feat. Joakim Bloohm (Randy Piper’s Animal), Nalley Pahlsson (Treat, Therion, Last Autumn’s Dream, Vindictiv), C.J. Grimmark (Narnia, Rob Rock), Mats Levén (Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Therion, Treat, Swedish Erotica)

Track list: “She Goes Down,” “Queen Of Dirt,” “Under My Skin,” “Who I Am,” “Life,” “Hardcore Circus,” “Wake Up Call,” “Pain,” “Tattooed Junkie,” “Miracle.”

Hardcore Circus deliver great melodic hard rock with a lot of attitude. Hardcore Circus has a very strong lineup. The act started out as a project in 2009. Joakim Bloohm (Randy Piper’s Animal) & Jorgen Bolmstad (Surround) had Motley Crue as a common denominator, and for years, they wanted to start a hard rock act with that kind of attitude. They began to write kick-ass songs and made a demo of 16 tracks. From that demo the duo began to pick songs for their debut album WAKE UP CALL. 10 tracks made it.

Joakim Bloohm, drummer of Hardcore Circus, has been working with Chris Laney (Zan Clan, Randy Piper’s Animal, Chris Laney) on the album VIOLENT NEW BREED, by Randy Piper’s Animal (W.A.S.P.). Bloohm is a hard hitting drummer with a lot of tattoos that gives him the perfect kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll look.

Lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player Jorgen Bolmstad is one of the hardest touring artists in Sweden, touring under the pseudonym Jojje. He also was the lead vocalist in the Swedish melodic rock act Surround. The album VARJE STEG DU TAR did very well in Japan and had great reviews in Burrn!!! Jorgen has been working with Thomas Vikstrom (Talk Of The Town, Therion, Candlemass, Brazen Abbot), whom did all of the harmony vocals on the Surround album. Last Autumn’s Dream vocalist Mikael Erlandsson wrote two of the songs on the album.

First to join Hardcore Circus was bass player Nalley Pahlsson (Treat, Last Autumn’s Dream, Vindictiv, Therion). He brings power to the music and has a great attitude in his playing. Nalley also put the harmony vocals on the album, great voice!!!

Next to join was super guitarist Carl-Johan Grimmark (Narnia, Rob Rock, Full Force, Saviour Machine, Divinefire). This guy really can play, his soul screams dirty rock ‘n’ roll and he proves that he can play more than that neo-classic style that made him famous. That’s the lineup of Hardcore Circus!!!

To make everything a little more interesting Mats Levén (Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Therion, Treat, Swedish Erotica, Southpaw) added all of the harmony vocals on the album, and what a voice he has, great complement to Jorgen and Nalley’s voices.

The album was recorded, mixed and produced by J.Bloohm & J.Bolmstad at Yokel Studio & Topz Recording Studio and mastered by Classe Persson CRP Recording.

Jorgen “Jojje” Bolmstad (Surround) – Lead Vocals & Rythm Guitars
Joakim Bloohm (Randy Piper’s Animal) – Drums
Nalley Pahlsson (Treat, Therion, Last Autumn’s Dream, Vindictiv) – Bass & backing vocals
C.J. Grimmark (Full Force, Narnia, Rob Rock) – Lead Guitars

DRAMARAMA: New Release From Agents Of Mercy At Radiant!

We have a new release from (Roine Stolt’s) Agents Of Mercy! This is a killer new prog CD bound to stay in your player for a good long time.

Roine Stolt and company are back with a new full on studio album titled DRAMARAMA. In its true retro-spirit it is rehearsed and recorded “live” in Varispeed Studios in Sweden, with very few overdubs. Twelve songs written by guitarist Roine Stolt and singer Nad Sylvan — the concept was “to find the roots of our inspiration and the sounds we love,” so there’s the obvious late ’60s and early ’70s feel.

Twelve titles that focus more on melody, storytelling and drama than technical delivery — not withstanding the fact that the band has some of the most skilled high profile musicians in the present prog scene.

“Plenty of symphonic rewards for the diehard fans of TFK or Transatlantic style prog — closer to Retropolis than Rainmaker — but yet more scaled down happy classic rock, glam & pop too.” The album borrows from theatrical rock — to film noir — the oddity of Bowie — to the energy Mahavishnu Orchestra. This new CD is a big leap towards a more complete classic (prog) rock band feel — where the 1st album stayed firmly in very pastel and mellow contemplating but yet demanding modes.

The band consist of:
Nad Sylvan (Unifaun) – vocals & keyboards
Roine Stolt (Transatlantic, Flower Kings) – guitars
Jonas Reingold (Flower Kings, Karmakanic) – bass
Lalle Larsson (Weaveworld, Karmakanic) – keyboards
Walle Wahlgren – drums

Track list:
1. The Duke Of Sadness
2. Last Few Grains Of Hope
3. Peace United
4. Journey
5. Gratitude
6. Meet Johnnie Walker
7. Cinnamon Tree
8. The Ballad Of Mary Chilton
9. Roger The Tailor
10. Conspiracy
11. We Have Been Freed
12. Time

Running time: 72 minutes
Comes in a nice digi-pak with artwork by Silas Toball (again)

-Eternal Descent Update

[Note: This combines multiple updates. – Tim]

Guitarist Llexi Leon Of Eternal Descent Announces Guitar Edge Web Exclusive; Interview And Recording Session Video Footage To Launch Oct. 28th

Guitar Edge magazine is slated to launch a web exclusive featuring Llexi Leon, guitarist of Eternal Descent at http://www.guitaredge.com/ on October 28th. The exclusive will feature recording session footage with Leon, bassist Billy Sheehan and producer Eddie Kramer as well as an interview about Leon’s progress with his upcoming CD release. Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, Kiss, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix) will produce Leon’s next CD, a soundtrack for the “Eternal Descent” comics, scheduled for release in 2011.

Eternal Descent Preview Video Clips:

Leon’s multimedia company has already aligned with numerous companies including Ovation Guitars, ESP Guitars, Digitech, Marshall Amplifiers, DiMarzio and with IDW in publishing the “Eternal Descent” comic book spotlighting cameo appearances by metal guitarists. This cross-functional marketing has created a first-ever unique opportunity for Leon’s concept.

Eternal Descent endorses ESP Guitars. Ovation Guitars, Kahler Tremolos, DiMarzio Pickups, Marshall Amps, Digitech Pedals, Guitar Grip, Pickboy, and Coffin Case.

Heavy Metal Comic Series “Eternal Descent” Goes Viral With Halloween Weekend Video Launch; Calabash Animation Brings “Eternal Descent” To Life With Dark, Imaginative Short Film

Eternal Descent creator Llexi Leon teams up with Calabash Animation, taking viewers into the dark fantasy realm of the popular comic book/music series. The result — an animated short that brings to life the gothic world envisioned in print by Leon and illustrator Jason Metcalf. Eternal Descent allied with endorsers ESP Guitars, Digitech, DiMarzio Inc and publisher IDW for a viral launch over the Halloween Weekend. The two-minute short film can be viewed in HD at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ped_sijmC8c .

A visually stunning fantasy comic book series published by IDW, “Eternal Descent” features storylines filled with adventures featuring guitar-wielding heroes. Acclaimed heavy metal guitarist Leon is the mastermind behind the story, which centers on three main characters — Lyra, a lead singer/guitarist in a popular band whose fame-at-any-cost attitude has made her vulnerable to Loki, a powerful demon plotting world domination. Helping Lyra is Sirian, one of heaven’s guardians. What unifies Lyra and Sirian is their weapon choice: searing electric guitars.

In addition to the powerful art of the comic books, which recalls the classic ’70s animation magazine Heavy Metal with a modern spin, is the music created by Leon and produced by rock legend Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones). The combined visual and audio components make Eternal Descent a truly visionary concept that has led to thousands of fans and endorsements from leading music manufacturers like ESP Guitars, Digitech and DiMarzio pickups.

“The concept was action heavy and effects heavy, and although the budget was limited, I was hoping for hand drawn character animation wherever possible,” Leon says. “Everyone I spoke too said it couldn’t be done. Calabash was the only studio willing to take on the challenge without compromising the script. They were optimistic about the potential of the piece, and they understood what I was trying to achieve. More importantly, they had the creative vision to think well beyond the technical challenges of the action and effects sequences, confident that everything would be possible by mixing mediums and combining techniques.”

Set to an ominous musical score featuring some amazing guitar solos, the story line of the short centers on a concert featuring Lyra that quickly turns from cheering fans in an outdoor stadium to fire-eyed demons trying to capture Lyra. She falls from the stage, crashes through the ground and lands in an underworld coliseum where Loki confronts her. As the battle begins Sirian comes to Lyra’s aid. Lyra escapes, but the cliffhanger ending suggests it is only the beginning.

About Eternal Descent’s Llexi Leon:
Llexi Leon began making noise in London, England in 2005. His highly intricate guitar style exhibits the many influences corralled to create his intense sound — from classical, flamenco, electronica, and ambient genres to the more prominent genres of rock and metal. All of these genres infused to one, Leon has built a cinematic metal fantasia with his music which has branched out to a comic book series. His main aspirations are bringing stories to life through escapism. He utilizes everyday events and his vivid imagination to drive him to create more avenues for his multimedia enterprise.

Two Side Moon Promotions are excited to welcome to the party rockers eloah from Austria!

Band: eloah
Label: House Of Audio (producing company)
Street Date: August 2008
Genre: new age progressive alternative

eloah is the musical project of Elmar C. Fuchs. It started 1993. Until now, several audio CDs have been recorded, comprising the input of many other musicians to whom I send heartily thanks for their contributions.

The biography of the eloah project is best desribed by describing its results — the audio CDs:

Who is brother horn? Very seldom, you find people with whom you can communicate without talking — with whom you feel spiritually compatible. Jörg Horner (brother horn) was such friend for me — a soul brother. We could make music for hours and hours, inspiring each other, not thinking of what we were doing, just letting the music flow out, thereby creating itself. The CDs MONDSTEIN and MONDSTEIN 2 – AMPLE JAZZ are examples of that — this is heart blood music for me, it reaches deeply into my soul.

The music on this album was composed in the early ’90s, a time, when we had a lot of fun together; a time, when I learned from him how to let myself fall into music. Although this music is somewhat different from what we created together, he was still my musical mentor at that time, listening carefully to each composition I proudly presented to him, planting the seeds of my musical evolution.

Jörg Horner is dead. My love for him lives. In order to honor his memory, I dedicate this album to him, to his widow and his daughter. In my heart, he will live forever.

“…Mining the same musical territroy as Stomu Yamashta and Jade Warrior, Austrian artist-musician Elmar C. Fuchs is a new age master with a progressive-rock sensibility. (…) In the end, the overall affect is nothing short of enchanting. … ” (14 of 16 points / Nick Tate, Progression Magazine)

“… As a whole, ODE TO BROTHER HORN is an enjoyable and innovative album that melds several distinct genres and sounds together. ….”
(4.5 stars / Rukshan Thenuwara – MuzikReviews.com Staff)

“…ODE TO BROTHER HORN is well-produced, and the entire album sounds clean and professional. (…) Fans of new age and progressive rock should definitely pick this one up. ….” (Chris & the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team)

And that’s a sign of an epic metal show.”

11/18/2010 Cabooze – Minneapolis, MN
11/20/2010 Summit – Denver, CO
11/21/2010 Sunshine Theatre – Albuquerque, NM

The ST tour coincides with the NO MERCY FOOL!/THE SUICIDAL FAMILY record released in September via the band’s own Suicidal Records. The record features re-recorded tracks from Suicidal Tendencies’ second album, JOIN THE ARMY, originally released in 1987, as well as tunes from the second full-length from No Mercy, Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Mike Clark’s speed metal band (which found ST vocalist Mike Muir on vocals) from 1986. Also included is a new version of the classic ST track, “Possessed To Skate.”

“Cyco Miko and crew are clearly hungry with the way they played on this record…” — All Metal Resource

“If you aren’t a fan of this kind of music… you gotta either be stuck on stupid or a Lady Gaga fan. Now if you’ll all excuse me… my next bowl and dose of NO MERCY FOOL!/THE SUICIDAL FAMILY awaits me.” — The Metal Den

“[Dean] Pleasants is like a man possessed on ‘Join The ST Army’ and ‘The Prisoner,’ and his wah-wah licks burn like white hot coals on ‘Born To Be Cyco.’ ‘Something Inside Me’ almost sounds like a lost Ramones track, and ‘No Mercy Fool!’ and ‘We’re F’n Evil,’ though pretty infantile lyrically, have a raging, punk edge that bring to mind the early speed metal scene.” — Sea Of Tranquility

“…Mike Muir can still sing. He doesn’t sound anything like the 1987 Cyco Miko but that can’t be expected. And the drumming provided by Steve Brunner for the ST songs and Eric Moore for the No Mercy tunes is better than ever and that adds a new dynamic to the tunes…. quite an entertaining record leading into what should be a brand new Suicidal Tendencies record coming out in the near future.” — Popdose

“There’s really not too many bands currently playing this brand of crossover thrash, so it only makes sense that the ones doing it right are those around for crossover’s heyday.” — Metal-Rules

Having just wrapped up their 2010 Horns & Halos Tour (which included dates all the way from Texas to Florida, and New York to Canada), Heaven Below are thanking the many fans that attended their shows with an exclusive EP, available for download through their website http://www.heavenbelow.com/ . Including a “Horns N’ Halo Tour Video,” as well as four new tracks (“Original Sin,” “Run,” “Clown Boy,” “Strange Days: Vicodin Mix”), an eight page PDF booklet, and wallpapers, the EP — and its non-existent price — is sure to be snapped up by fans hungry for more Heaven Below.

Fronted by Patrick Kennison — formerly of The Union Underground — and supported by members Jesse Billson on guitar, John Younger on bass, and Chad Clark on drums, Heaven Below has forged a tour de force of sonic power and songwriting that is poised to lead the way for new rock music.

“Our sound encompasses the best parts of our influences,” explains Kennison. “We love the vocal harmonies of classic bands like Alice In Chains, or the angst of legends like Trent Reznor, but our riffs and song ideas tend to be spawn from guitar driven bands like Metallica, or even Rage Against The Machine. Once we put the vocals on, we immediately feel that our music takes on its own sound.” And on their self-titled release, Heaven Below shows that despite being such a young band, they can easily keep pace with the top dogs of the current rock scene — especially on such standout tracks as “When Daylight Dies,” which was produced by Grammy-award winning/multi-platinum artist Ben Moody of Evanescence.

And while the band regroups to plot their next move after recently concluding their 2010 Horns & Halos Tour, fans will have a free helping of Heaven Below until their next full-length tour offering drops like a ton of bricks.

*** PRESS RELEASE #23 ***
-The Ocean: Full Album Stream Via MetalSucks; New Full Length To Drop November 9

Today MetalSucks.com will begin streaming ANTHROPOCENTRIC, the upcoming full-length from German progressive/atmospheric metal enigmas The Ocean, in its entirety. The stream will remain active until November 8, the day before the official North American release date.

ANTHROPOCENTRIC is the sequel to the band’s HELIOCENTRIC long player, released earlier this year. Where HELIOCENTRIC tells the story of the rise of the heliocentric world view — the idea that the earth revolves around the sun — and the effects this discovery had on Christian belief and occidental culture, ANTHROPOCENTRIC challenges the views of creationists and other modern fundamentalists who still believe that the earth is at the center of the universe and no more than 5,000 years old. “ANTHROPOCENTRIC continues the critique of Christianity, inspired by the questions that Dostoyevsky asked and some of the answers that Friedrich Nietzsche and Richard Dawkins gave,” notes guitarist Robin Staps.

Musically heavier than HELIOCENTRIC, ANTHROPOCENTRIC covers a similar sonic and dynamic range as its predecessor by including a number of calm, acoustic moments, but these are, for the most part, orchestrated with guitars, and not so much with piano and strings. “The album is a pretty big production, and still has a very earthy, organic feel to it,” says Staps. “We’ve spent a great deal of time on the basic sound this time around — the drums, bass, guitars and vocals — and at this stage I am pretty confident that this will pay off in the end!”

ANTHROPOCENTRIC will be released on November 9 via Metal Blade Records.

-Stay with me on this one… The other day I was catching up on those Popdose “False Metal, Dead! 300 Headbangers” articles by Ben Steed, and read about Dokken’s UNDER LOCK AND KEY. This reminded me that I still don’t have BREAKING THE CHAINS on CD. So then yesterday at lunch, I was walking back to the office and decided to duck into a used record shop to pick up the November issue of the free monthly paper Illinois Entertainer. (Yes I know, get with the times… CDs and newspapers are, like, so last century, but that’s a story for another day.) I grabbed the IE and was about to leave when I remembered the Dokken thing, so I figured I’d peruse the “Misc. D” section looking for BREAKING THE CHAINS. No dice, but I found Dreamland’s FUTURE’S CALLING (2005, Dockyard1) for $4.99. It’s been a really, REALLY long time since I bought a used CD but the cover looked cool so I picked it up. Turns out this is an excellent slab of HammerFall-style power metal, and it’s no surprise given that HF singer Joacim Cans and ex-guitarist Stefan Elmgren were involved with the album’s creation. Totally cool surprise, and I walked sort of a crazy path to get there. (But yes, sadly, still no BREAKING THE CHAINS…)

-Not sure how I feel about Manowar re-recording BATTLE HYMNS. I’ve always liked that album as an example of the younger, not quite so over-the-top “METAL!!!!” version of Manowar. I guess it’s cool if they truly just did this to make it better sonically, but the whole part about replacing Orson Welles’ narration in “Dark Avenger” with Sir Christopher Lee’s gives me pause. It will be weird hearing that song done differently. No disrespect to Sir Christopher at all, but Welles makes that song (along with “Defender” on FIGHTING THE WORLD). Fingers crossed.

-I’m glad to see the Chastain and Leather stuff getting reissued by Divebomb Records. That label does nice work so I know these will be cool. Chastain was one of those artists we all kind of got into in college in the late ’80s/early ’90s, but I don’t think any of my buddies or I really kept up with him in the ensuing years. Not sure why.

-Re-read that track list for Hell’s Thrash Horsemen’s GOING SANE: “Injection,” “Black Label,” “My Last Resort,” “Global Genocide,” “Stop The Corruption,” “Razor’s Edge,” “Nuclear Attack,” “Death Sentence,” “Rifle Shots,” “Abomination,” “True Lies,” “Kill F*cking Bitch.” Egad, is it really that bad in Russia?

-Funny how the Hardcore Circus press release keeps linking vocalist Mats Levén to “Yngwie J. Malmsteen.” As opposed to all the other Yngwie Malmsteens out there. (I know, it’s an old joke, but it still cracks me up.)

-I guessed I missed the new Jackyl album, WHEN MOONSHINE AND DYNAMITE COLLIDE, but that sure is a great title. Glad to see the “Full Throttle Saloon” TV show is coming back, too — it was a fun watch last season.

-“You Stupid Mankind,” “If A Mountain Could Talk,” and “The Smile Of The Sun.” Those song titles are soooooooooo Helloween.

-Wow, Vince Neil on “Skating With The Stars?” Seriously?

-Gary Hoey has 17 albums?! Wow.

-In my current playlist: Heaven & Hell – NEON NIGHTS (Armoury Records), Leverty / Kunes – ALL THE GIRLS ARE CRAZY (SINGLE) (indie), David “Rock” Feinstein – BITTEN BY THE BEAST (Niji Entertainment Group), Nostradameus – ILLUSION’S PARADE (AFM Records).

This one’s been out for about a year now (sorry fro the delay!). I first “found” Chinawhite back around the time of 2000’s BREATHE FIRE… and I was surprised to learn there weren’t any releases between it and CHALLENGES. The Dutch quintet — Don Feltges (Joe Stump) on lead vocals, Peter Cox on guitar and vocals, Sander Stappers (Sengaia) on bass, Rolf “Fuchs” Vossen on keyboards, and Hans in ‘t Zandt (Vengeance, Mad Max) on drums — plays a somewhat quirky type of Hammond B3-infused melodic/prog rock, with old Uriah Heep being a decent starting point for comparison’s sake. Or maybe a more AOR/melodic version of early Dream Theater, with Jon Lord on keyboards?! The sound is hard to pin down, and the album is a grower, so it took me a while to get my head wrapped around it. The disc’s clear highlight is Cox’s tasty guitar work; he can bolster a seemingly pedestrian track by pulling a nice solo out of thin air, and there are enough meaty riffs here to please air guitar enthusiasts. The B3 is overused at times, particularly in “I Am I” (not a Queensryche cover!) where it’s used to fill a lot of spaces in the music. I’ve got nothing against the B3, mind you — it is used perfectly over a dark, buzzy riff in “Stranger,” and adds a nifty Deep Purple-meets-Black Sabbath air to “My Venus Rising’s” spooky intro — but too much is distracting. Fuchs can also tickle the ivories quite nicely, with “Dreams Of A Child” and the excellent “Better Than You” showing off his piano work. The latter, its riff-tastic follow-up “Inside,” and driving closer “Wings Of The Wind” (minus the final four minutes of oceanfront sound effects…) are probably the album’s best tracks. If a few of the lengthier songs were pared down (this feels more like a 50-minute album, not the 66-minute behemoth it is), and the mix was more level (in “Stranger” the cymbals practically scream at you and the vocals are too low) CHALLENGES would definitely rate a “B” or higher.

HALFORD – LIVE IN ANAHEIM (DVD) (A) Metal God Records, 2010

Yes yes, another Halford release, another “A” from Tim. I *swear* I am not a blind loyalist fanboy! This DVD documents the CRUCIBLE album and tour cycle from 2002/2003, yet somehow doesn’t seem stale. (Don’t forget CRUCIBLE recently got the “re-mixed and re-mastered” treatment, which brought it back and improved its sonic quality immeasurably.) The first portion of the DVD is a nice 35-minute documentary that combines interviews with all Halford band members past and present (including guitarist Pat Lachman and bassist Ray Reindeau, who played on the album but were replaced by Roy Z and Mike Davis, respectively) plus four CRUCIBLE songs performed live in Japan just before Reindeau left. The interview and studio segments give pretty good insight into how the writing and recording sessions went down, and the live stuff (“Heretic,” “Sun,” “Golgotha,” and “One Will”) is pro-shot and excellent. The bulk of the DVD is a 92-minute concert from the House Of Blues in Anaheim, CA, featuring the Halford/Metal Mike Chlasciak/Z/Davis/Bobby Jarzombek lineup. The set list is heavy on Judas Priest material, mixing the commonly played (“The Hellion/Electric Eye,” “Victim Of Changes,” “Breaking The Law,” “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”), excellent heavier tracks (“Painkiller,” “Rapid Fire,” “Riding On The Wind”), and some fantastic old chestnuts (“White Heat, Red Hot,” “Never Satisfied,” “Diamonds And Rust” done all-electric). Apparently STAINED CLASS’ “White Heat, Red Hot” was never played live by Priest, and heck if I can remember them ever doing “Never Satisfied” from ROCKA-ROLLA! (And watch this version for Mr. Z’s behind-the-back guitar solo.) In a “VH1 Storytellers”-like moment, Halford talks about meeting Joan Baez at Live Aid and getting her stamp of approval on the “Diamonds And Rust” cover. The title track and “Made In Hell” from the Halford band’s debut, RESURRECTION, are included, along with Fight’s “Into The Pit” (which sounds odd with “Nailed To The Gun” *not* following it!), and Rob’s first solo venture, “Light Comes Out Of Black” (this time played live for real, not “virtually live” as on the LIVE INSURRECTION set). The remaining songs are four of the heavier tunes off of CRUCIBLE: “Heretic,” the mosh-tastic “Golgotha,” “Hearts Of Darkness” (described by Rob as being about the infamous Reno, NV, court case), and the intense “Hearts Of Darkness.” The show itself is basically no-frills, just the band blazing onstage (oddly, still in front of a RESURRRECTION banner), but the power is undeniable. The DVD sports an attractive booklet, stereo and 5.1 surround sound, and “extras” consisting of the promo videos for “Betrayal” (CRUCIBLE), “In The Morning” (CRUCIBLE), and “Never Satisfied” (live at this Anaheim show), and a series of ads for Rob’s various projects and releases. All in all, another strong Halford release. You want criticisms though? Okay, here are two — the picture quality of the Anaheim show isn’t totally perfect, and I was really disappointed the set list didn’t include my two favorite CRUCIBLE tracks, namely “Betrayal” and “Wrath Of God.” There, see? I can do it. 🙂

Watain’s new album, LAWLESS DARKNESS, clocks in at an hour and 13 minutes. A bit long, eh? That’s what I thought, but when the music stopped playing, I had thought there was a glitch and the CD had stopped midway through. So I was actually surprised to see that the album had just simply ended. It’s rare for me to listen to a black metal album without becoming slightly bored at some point, but not so for Watain. When you’re listening to the album, you can’t help but feel like this is straightforward black metal. But the thing is, it is very entertaining, straightforward black metal, and that is the thing that counts. Perhaps this is due to their long history practicing the dark art of black metal. Watain has been on the scene since 1998 and has toured alongside black metal gods Celtic Frost, Kreator, and Legion Of The Damned. LAWLESS DARKNESS is Watain’s fourth offering. In true black metal form the album opens with “Death’s Cold Dark,” which wastes no time in plunging into the terrifying depths where only the best black metal exists. Deeper and deeper you’re thrown into the ghastly pit. Drums are pummeling at speeds so fast, you think the drumsticks are going to break. The vocal style is thick and raspy, spewing venom with the death-inspired lyrics. “Malfeitor” wallows in black metal bleakness during a despair-ridden interlude halfway through the song. But not for long. It quickly charges back into the grotesque insanity that the song opened with. The guitar work didn’t particularly jump out at me. It acts more like an assisting piece, to make sure the songs all have fluidity. The guitars add a melodic, despondent charm, driving the song a bit into the doom metal arena. “Reaping Death” begins as if you’re being shot out a cannon and you’re hurtled straight into the darkest, most horrifying hell. The speed of the instrumentation matches the fast talking, satanic-sounding vocals. All around, panic and fear abound. And there’s even a catchy chorus! “Four Thrones” takes us back to a slower beginning, but of course, not for long. The guitars are doing what’s become trademark for this album now, and have begun to create a melodic ambience and beat. This allows for the mad smashing of the drums to be heard and focused on a lot better, which is the thing that will induce severe headbanging. “Lawless Darkness” was my favorite song. It’s completely instrumental, and ordinarily I’m not as big of a fan of a song sans vocals. However, there is an awesome beyond awesome guitar solo in the middle of this song, which really makes it stand out from the rest of the songs. It makes it stand out from all other black metal songs for that matter. “Waters Of Ain” was another favorite. It’s a long one, too, spanning more than 14 minutes. But the use of extra sound effects enhances the musicality in a way to make the mood much more palpable. Black metal as a genre is hit or miss for me. Watain’s LAWLESS DARKNESS was a hit. Worth checking out.

Never before have I had any doubt that black metal is not only alive and well, but growing at rapid speeds into a hellish, all-consuming monster in the metal world. Another new face can be seen taking violent shape in the ever-evolving black metal kingdom, and that would be Philadelphia-based Woe. Woe crept onto the scene back in 2007 and released a demo. Then followed their 2008 first full-length album, and 2010 brought them to the release of QUIETLY, UNDRAMATICALLY. Think about both of the aforementioned words: quietly and undramatically. I can’t imagine either adverb being high on anyone’s list when it comes to describing the loud, violent nature of black metal. So, I was honestly expecting this album to be some kind of new breed of pseudo-black metal; perhaps doom metal veiled in a thin cloak of black metal. But rest assured, QUIETLY, UNDRAMATICALLY is right to claim allegiance to the black metal cult. “No Solitude” commences the album; a fitting name, yes, but once the music begins, you’re not quite sure it’s black metal. The guitars are steadily strumming as to exude despair in every direction, creating an atmosphere of hopelessness. Chris Grigg, our multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, marches into the song with an inhumanly diabolic voice which can barely be heard above the instrumentation. The next track, “The Road To Recovery,” follows “No Solitude” so seamlessly that you think it’s the same song. Griggs explodes into the song like homemade bomb detonating in the middle of a cold winter night — vivifying the dismal scene into one of chaos and confusion. The drums demand your attention by creating a cacophony of noise due to the clanking cymbals and the splintering of simultaneous drumsticks to the drums. The vocal style alternates and sometimes mutates into what sounds like a deranged, satanic sounding lunatic. Insanity is violently shaken out through the screams, as the drums carry away the torment in a tornado of beats and melody. The guitar drives the pandemonium from behind the scenes. To call it a whirlwind of a song would be an understatement. “Quietly, Undramatically” allows the melody to stand out more prominently. Griggs shows off his vocal diversity and ability to ricochet from one to the other at a moment’s notice. He uses a growling, guttural death grunt at first, and then launches into the blood-curdling screeching style; the latter sounding more black metal-esque. The drumming on this track kicks into a catchy beat at one point, completely deviating from the blistering pace. And later, I was surprised again by the soft-spoken chanting, which added its own kind of morose element to the song. The song only tantalizes you with these short lasting anomalies, and quickly surges back into fierce and horrifying abyss that you were introduced to earlier in the song. “A Treatise On Control” starts off as if we’re walking off the doom metal trail: the air is heavy with sadness, the guitars are almost inaudible and the drums are moving at the pace of a snail. Once the vocals set in, the song blossoms like a dead rose regaining new life since being frozen dormant after a long winter’s sleep. The woeful ambience is ubiquitous and is palpable in every instant of the song. “Full Circle” is the last and longest on the album. It sets a more upbeat quality with the drums, but the guitars sulking in the background is what gives the song an underlying sense of dread. To be succinct, since the song has ample time to experiment, the song dips and dives into various moods. The album as a whole didn’t impress me as much as I had hoped. I think part of the problem is, there are so many emerging black metal bands out there, you really, really (cannot put enough emphasis on that) have to do something outside the box to be original. To me, this was fairly straightforward. Black metallers should find this to their liking and should add QUIETLY, UNDRAMATICALLY to their collection.
