-Niji Entertainment Group Inc. Launces Official Dio Web Store!

2010 will go down as the year that we lost one of hard rock/heavy metal’s all-time great vocalists, Ronnie James Dio (after a valiant battle with cancer). Throughout a career that saw Ronnie pen or co-pen classics with such legendary acts as Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and with his solo group, Dio, there are simply not enough words to describe the singer’s contribution to rock music worldwide. Niji Entertainment Group Inc. has announced the opening of http://www.officialronniejamesdiowebstore.com/ . Dio fans around the world will now be able to purchase official tour shirts, jackets, hats, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, vinyl and box sets from Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio on the web store. There will be many cool new Dio items recently designed that will be MUST HAVES for your collections! The web store also offers all the official Heaven & Hell items including shirts, CDs, DVDs and vinyl.

Dean Schachtel, General Manager for Niji Entertainment Group, commented “Fans were having a hard time finding product in stores. They can now have a one stop shop at our web store and purchase their favorite Dio collectables and memorabilia at fair prices.” The web store also offers worldwide shipping which is certain to please Dio’s large and loyal fan base. Selected official Dio T-shirts will be available for purchase as well. This week features an official 1985 SACRED HEART T-shirt. Each week thereafter, a different one will be available, eventually including classic tour T-shirts.

To celebrate the life of the man that has become synonymous with metal, the double disc set, DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 will be released on November 9th, 2010. This item is available for pre-order for only $15.98, and as an added bonus until November 5th, 2010, includes an original stick-on backstage pass. The first disc was recorded at the first-ever UK performance by Dio’s solo group, while on tour supporting their classic debut, HOLY DIVER. And the set list does a superb job reflecting Dio’s debut (featuring such classics as “Rainbow In The Dark,” “Stand Up And Shout,” etc.), as well as classics from both Rainbow and Black Sabbath (“Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Heaven And Hell,” etc.) — resulting in a thorough retrospective of Dio’s career, from Rainbow to Black Sabbath to solo hits. The second disc of DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 features guitarist Craig Goldy’s debut — recorded in 1987, in support of the DREAM EVIL album, and contains highlights from Dio’s career. DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 will be the very first release from the Niji Entertainment Group (which was formed by Ronnie James Dio and his wife/manager, Wendy Dio, in early 2010). The set will be released as a deluxe digi-pak including a booklet filled with rare photographs and liner notes, and original replica all access laminates from both shows. Ronnie was the executive producer on the Donington project, and was very much looking forward to the release.

One of the brand new exclusive collectable pieces available on the Dio web store is an autographed limited edition baseball, presented in a display case (only 2,000 were produced). Each piece is numbered, and features Ronnie’s DIO logo and autograph. It was well-known to many Dio fans that Ronnie loved baseball, and it was his dream to play in the major leagues. He was once quoted saying he would trade in his rockstar career for one playing with the Yankees!

The Niji Entertainment Group is a full service record label, and will be releasing rare and unreleased recordings from Dio and other artists. November 23rd will see two additional releases from the Niji Entertainment Group — a deluxe limited edition picture disc of Dio’s classic solo debut, HOLY DIVER, and BITTEN BY THE BEAST from David “Rock” Feinstein. “Rock” is Ronnie’s cousin, and was a member of Elf, and the leader of the legendary NY band The Rods. BITTEN BY THE BEAST features the single “Metal Will Never Die,” with lead vocals by Ronnie James Dio. This single will be heavily worked to active rock and metal radio this fall.

Between Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, the Dio social media followers now numbers over one million.

While Ronnie was alive, he always wanted to have his own action figure/statue. And now, this has become a reality — KnuckleBonz has created the Ronnie James Dio rock iconz statue, which will be available in late fall 2010. These statues are only produced in limited edition runs of 3,000, which make them highly collectible and sought after from fans. A portion from the sales of the Dio statue will go to the Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund, in honor of Ronnie James Dio. Preorders available by visiting http://www.knucklebonz.com/ .

-Mascot Records Releases Seventh Album From Guitarist John Norum

NEW YORK — PLAY YARD BLUES, the latest solo album from Europe guitarist John Norum, is now available on Mascot Records.

The long-awaited album takes a different approach than Norum’s past releases, showcasing a more bluesy side of his soulful style. PLAY YARD BLUES consists of 10 tracks, recorded in Norum’s hometown of Stockholm, Sweden.

“When I started playing, I only played blues rock,” Norum said. “Now I feel it’s time to go back to my roots.”

The album title was inspired by the studio in which it was recorded — Play Yard Studios. “It’s also the name of a song and it ended up being one of my favorite songs on the album,” he said.

In addition to the Norum originals, the guitarist puts his personal stamp on a few classics: Thin Lizzy’s “It’s Only Money,” Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush’s “Ditch Queen,” and Mountain’s “Travellin’ In The Dark.” “I always loved Thin Lizzy, Mountain, and Frank Marino, so I want to pay tribute to those guys,” Norum said.

As a whole, Norum sees his new album as a tribute to his late wife, Michelle Meldrum of the band Meldrum, who passed away suddenly two years ago at the age of just 39. Photos of Norum and the couple’s young son emphasize the double meaning of the album’s title, with the guitarist and the boy side-by-side, guitars in hand. “It’s a tribute to Michelle and I wanted him to be part of it,” Norum said. “And he is proud of his daddy’s playing.”

PLAY YARD BLUES, Norum’s seventh solo album, was mixed and produced by Norum and Peer Stappe. Norum, who sings on the album in addition to playing to guitar, is joined by musicians Tomas Torberg (bass), Thomas Bronman (drums), Peer Stappe (percussion), and Mic Michaeli (keyboards).

Mascot Records is an independent record company based in The Netherlands that specializes in guitar music, from metal to instrumental guitar, hard rock, prog rock and (guitar) fusion.

-David “Rock” Feinstein Readies Solo Effort, With A Little Help From A Special Friend

David “Rock” Feinstein — the former member of Ronnie Dio & The Prophets, The Electric Elves, Elf, and the leader of the legendary NYC band, The Rods — is readying a new solo effort via the Niji Entertainment Group, BITTEN BY THE BEAST. Released on November 23, 2010, the nine-track disc will be available as a deluxe digi-pak, and will certainly be of interest to metal fans worldwide, due to Feinstein’s impressive hard rock pedigree. But also, because the album features what turned out to be one of the last-ever recorded vocals by Ronnie James Dio (Feinstein’s cousin), on the headbanging anthem “Metal Will Never Die.”

“I feel like it was meant for me to write ‘Metal Will Never Die,'” explains Feinstein. “And it was meant to be that Ronnie James Dio should sing it! Whatever power it was that brought the two of us back together musically, I am so thankful for. Now, ‘Metal Will Never Die’ means more to me than any other song that I have written in my whole career as a songwriter and musician. I can’t wait for the world to hear it!”

“Metal Will Never Die” is sure to be a hit at active, hard rock, and metal radio (which the Skateboard Marketing team will be heavily promoting for the coming months). Additionally, Feinstein will be supporting the release with live dates with The Rods for all of 2011. BITTEN BY THE BEAST will surely catch the attention of Dio fans, as well as fans of vintage, anthemic metal sounds. “Nobody could really know how Ronnie worked in the studio, unless they saw it for themselves,” adds Feinstein. “How effortless it was for him to sing. Years ago, Ronnie and I spoke about doing some kind of project together again.” Soon, fans will be able to hear firsthand what Ronnie James Dio had known for decades — Feinstein is the real deal, and BITTEN BY THE BEAST will prove this point once and for all.

The Niji Entertainment Group was started by Ronnie James Dio and his wife/manager, Wendy Dio, in early 2010 (shortly before Dio’s tragic passing in May of this year). The first non-Dio related release will be BITTEN BY THE BEAST, which will lead to further releases by other artists throughout next year, including solo efforts by Tim “Ripper” Owens, Lynch Mob vocalist Oni Logan, and former Dio guitarist Rowan Robertson.

BITTEN BY THE BEAST Track listing:

Smoke On The Horizon
Evil In Me
Break Down The Walls
Metal Will Never Die (featuring Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals)
Kill The Demon
Rock’s Boogie
Give Me Mercy
Run For Your Life

-Falconer Issues Recording Update And Album Title!

Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall of the Swedish metal band Falconer has issued the following update:

“Recording time is coming up. Most songs for the next Falconer album are written and rehearsed soon as the studio time is drawing nearer, starting to feel a bit stressed! The album will be mixed in the end of January so I’d guess we’re up for a late spring release.

“The title of the new album will be ARMOD and will be completely sung in Swedish except for the bonus tracks that will simply be English versions of the best (according to us) new songs.

“This time we have concentrated on the traditional folk side of our music including more traditional folk songs (the majority of the material is still our own), more fiddles and flutes. Be calm, the horrid sound of accordions will firmly be left behind!

“This is a way to finally devoting an entire album to the influences and getting that out of our system, so to speak, and to do the thing some have asked for during ten years. This is not the new direction of us but just the sound of THIS album.

“We are prepared for nagging about lack of speed and the full use of the Swedish language and, of course, the cynical opinions that we lack inspiration and thus use more traditional folk songs.

“The next time we’ll take another step; I wonder what that can be.”

The band’s most recent album, AMONG BEGGARS AND THIEVES, was released in August 2008 via Metal Blade Records. The CD was recorded at Andy La Rocque’s (King Diamond) Sonic Train Studio in Varberg, Sweden.

Falconer in 2007 extended its deal with Metal Blade for another four albums.

Mistheria – DRAGON FIRE
Released: October 15, 2010

Keyboard virtuoso Mistheria returns with an all star cast for the neo-classical progressive metal tour de force DRAGON FIRE. Home to 13 tracks of full-on metal pomposity, this is music crafted around stirring vocal melodies and impassioned first-class musicianship. The virtuoso meter of the personnel involved sets a new standard and fans of artists such as Symphony X, Malmsteen and Artension will find this a sheer musical delight.

The grandiose music on offer has its home within the classical music masters but the metal charge brings DRAGON FIRE firmly into the present day. Yet this is more than musical virtuosity. Mistheria has taken great care to produce songs first and foremost with catchy vocal melodies and big choruses and just one listen will prove that he has succeeded in his aim producing captivating compositions. After demos for the album had been made the personnel was then hand selected by Mistheria to bring out the best in each track with the highest calibre musicians within the genre chosen to do justice to his songs.

The vocalists comprise of John West (Artension, Royal Hunt), Rob Rock (Impellitteri, solo), Mark Boals (ex Malmsteen, Ring Of Fire, Royal Hunt), Lance King (Balance Of Power) and Titta Tani (ex Astra, Ashent). Each vocalist’s unique style has been selected for the appropriate track to deliver Mistheria’s vision. The same process was used for the guitarists with George Bellas (solo, Ring Of Fire), Neil Zaza (solo), Roger Staffelbach (Artension, Angel Of Eden) and Emir Hot (solo) plying their virtuoso guitar work which blend beautifully with Mistheria keyboards to recreate the classic guitar/keyboard pairing in all its glory. The bass was ably handled by Alberto Rigoni (Twinspirits) and drums come courtesy of John Macaluso (Ark, TNT, ex Malmsteen) whose performance is full of high-power heavy grooves and tons of energy making this one of his best performances to date.

Yet despite the number of musicians involved there is an impressive sense of cohesion to the material all thanks to the quality of Mistheria’s initial vision shining through in all aspects. Even the sound of the album has produced and mixed to his own personal taste. Mistheria comments, “Since I only wrote vocal melodies and lyrics for ‘Dragon Fire’ and vocal melodies for ‘Eye Of The Storm’ songs (although I gave ideas for the others), all singers involved influenced the songs prominently with really great lyrics and melodies. John Macaluso’s job on drums has been nothing short of astonishing starting from my programmed drums guideline. The guitarists moved on my own demo ideas as well as Alberto Rigoni on bass and their job has been simply perfect. Ivana Greguric wrote a song exclusively for the album (‘The Beast’) and her work is really remarkable.”

Michael Harris – TRANZ-FUSED
Released: October 15, 2010

Guitar virtuoso Michael Harris returns after the successful ORCHESTRATE album ready to take on a fresh new challenge in his every widening musical vocabulary. Enter TRANZ-FUSED which is Harris’ first all fusion instrumental recording; although this isn’t just jazz fusion in its purest sense as it incorporates prog, metal, blues and some funk elements as well. Despite the change of musical expression one thing remains the same — the stunning guitar work of Michael Harris.

Michael’s musical goal with making the album was first and foremost strong songs with melodies that hold up as well as a little wackiness. In a performance sense Michael has delivered a strong yet tasteful vibe with effective dynamics. Sonically Michael has gone for a more stripped down approach with less overdubs and making use of cleaner guitar sounds, old school fusion keyboard and some guitar synth sounds as well as a dose of effects such as octave and ring modulators for true authenticity. Influences for the album have come from the likes of Clint Strong, John Scofield, Pat Martino, Al DiMeola, Scott Henderson and Jeff Beck.

Joining Michael for the album is a stellar supporting cast of bassists Adam Nitti, David Harbour, James Martin and Bunny Brunel. Drums come from Mike Haid and Marco Minnemann whilst Bernard Wright delivers a keyboard solo on “Seizure Salad.” On his fellow musicians Harris comments: “I was grateful to have a roster of great musicians on the record, who all brought chops, style, dynamics, and substance to the table!”

TRANZ-FUSED is a welcome return from one of the instrumental scenes best loved players.

-Creation’s End Debut Album Due In November Via Sensory Records

Creation’s End is the visionary collaboration between guitarist Rudy Albert (ex-Zandelle) and drummer Dario Rodriguez. The duo have been playing music together since 1999 in various capacities, and as they grew tighter in their playing, began to focus on writing original material. The nature of these songs evolved from simple metal tunes in the early years to more complex and mature compositions.

After a short period of time, Rudy and Dario decided that the time was right to record and release their ever-expanding music the right way. With a newly renovated studio and producer John Macaluso (James LaBrie Band, Fool’s Game, ex-Ark, ex-TNT, ex-Yngwie Malsmteen) on board, Rudy and Dario set out to record eight reworked versions of songs that appeared on their early demos, which we now have in our hands as the debut album from Creation’s End. They also recruited several other well-established musicians to round out the lineup, including Mike DiMeo (ex-Masterplan, ex-Riot), Marco Sfogli (James LaBrie Band), and Joe Black (Chris Caffery, ex-Zandelle).

This past summer the band decided to have world famous engineer Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Yes, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, etc.) mix their debut masterpiece, which was dubbed A NEW BEGINNING. This flooring debut album is set to be unleashed on November 9, 2010 via New Jersey-based prog metal outfit Sensory Records, and culminates everything the creative duo envisioned since the very beginning; a melodic, progressive, groove-laden, dark and crushing display of incredible heavy metal.

The Melodic Adventure Power Metal Explosion From Sweden!

The story of ReinXeed takes place in a town called Boden in the north of Sweden. ReinXeed is Tommy Johansson’s musical creation and band vision.

The band was formed in 2002 and worked very hard with the music style and image to create what ReinXeed call “Adventure Metal.” Big bombastic music with big lyrics with stories and legends that has been told for centuries with a heavenly hope.

In late 2007 Christian Liljegren, former singer and founder of Narnia; also owner of Liljegren Records, got a demo from Tommy Johansson. He was so impressed of what he heard and signed ReinXeed direct to his label. Christian is also running a management company and Tommy Johansson are one of his clients.

Promotional CDs were sent out to different companies in Asia where Christian saw great potential for ReinXeed and highly praised label King Records in Japan licensed ReinXeed and the release of the debut album THE LIGHT and have since then reached good success with ReinXeed’s releases THE LIGHT, HIGHER, and MAJESTIC. Liljegren Records releases the MAJESTIC album for the rest of the world except Asia.

The debut album THE LIGHT released springtime 2008 showed the world a new band and talent in the melodic metal world. Now two years later since the release of THE LIGHT and the second album HIGHER and now the third effort MAJESTIC will see the light in Europe & USA.

Since the releases of THE LIGHT and HIGHER ReinXeed has toured a lot in Sweden and also been working hard to write new material for the new album MAJESTIC. On the debut album THE LIGHT the musical inspiration for ReinXeed comes from Gary Moore, Angra, Stratovarius, Robby Valentine, Symphony X and Helloween (KEEPER OF THE SEVEN KEYS 1 & 2 era).

ReinXeed have worked hard to develop the songs and the production on MAJESTIC and the sound is big, powerful and bombastic with lots of vocal harmonies and shredding guitars & mighty keyboards. ReinXeed are already looking forward for the fourth album production as Tommy Johansson has now tons of ideas and material. Of course the band is hoping to touring abroad especially in Japan where they have a lot of fans since the release of THE LIGHT.

The MAJESTIC album scored 88 points in Burrn! Magazine when it was released in Japan and have since then been in the metal charts in Japan. Everybody are convinced that this is by far the best ReinXeed album and the band already have loads of material for the fourth album so expect a new album in spring/summer 2011.

Tommy is also involved in a new great band called Golden Resurrection formed by Divinefire, Audiovision, ex-Narnia vocalist Christian Liljegren who signed ReinXeed to Liljegren Records. What we are talking about is Scandinavian melodic metal with neoclassical elements in the finest possible way with a killer production done by Erik Martensson (Eclipse, W.E.T). Their debut album GLORY TO MY KING will see the light October 27th 2010 in Japan and November 12, 2010 in the rest of the world. Specials: feat. Göran Edman [Yngwie Malmsteen, Brazen Abbot, John Norum, Street Talk, Signum Regis], Jim McCarty [The Yardbirds, Renaissance]

Track list:
1. Russian Summer
2. The Battle Within
3. Enemy Of my Soul
4. Street Of Moscow
5. Rendezvous
6. Shining Star
7. China Girl
8. Princess Of The Night
9. VIP
10. Fire Flight

Make way for a new Scandinavian Band! Enter Stratosphere, a tight knit Quintet that mixes symphonic progressive and melodic rock in a manner that will leave you speechless.

The band is the brainchild of keyboard virtuoso Jeppe Lund, himself a huge fan of symphonic rock and he has dreamed of making a record such as FIRE FLIGHT. With Goran Edman on lead vocals; his clean, yet powerful voice is one of a kind. Goran blends perfectly in a loud music setting and excels on the neo-classical twist. Both his lead and backing vocal qualities are state of art. He has become a household name singing with bands such as Kharma, Vindictiv and, of course, with Yngwie Malmsteen. To complete the lineup we have guitarist Jonas Larsen, whose nifty fretwork reminds us of Yngwie himself and Richie Blackmore. The solid rhythm section is provided by Jim McCarty on drums and Anders Borre Mathieson on bass, both of whom have had a seasoned career in the rock music industry.

Stratosphere is like a breath of fresh air and boasts a big sound with plenty of cat and mouse guitar / keyboard antics that roll along just effortlessly. They seem to capture the elements of symphonic progressive rock and mix them with melodic overtones with a sprinkle of originality just for good measure. Opener “Russian Summer” is a huge song with soaring melodies, whilst “The Battle Within” echoes the halcyon days of Rainbow. The band seem at home and play together so masterfully, one track that is worthy of extra attention is the instrumental “Rendezvous” which is one of those songs that has loads of layered keyboards that intertwine with sumptuous guitar playing. The Haunting song “Shining Star” is a pleasure to listen to and gives a chance for Goran to show off his vocal prowess to maximum effect. The ballad “Princess Of The Night” is a beautifully executed piece; in fact the whole album is just a complete pleasure to listen to.

Stratosphere is a new beginning; this is Scandinavian rock music of the highest order.

-Nightmare Records New Releases

Label: Nightmare Records
Style: Metal
Release: October 12, 2010

Fracture pride themselves as being one of very few bands out of Australia to have delved into a genre of music that is vastly becoming popular. Ask the band and the will say that they would call their music “Metal” but composition of their music has it otherwise. It’s Progressive Metal!!

Fracture was formed in early 2007, after a meeting with a mutual friend that they had in common. David Bellion on vocals, Tony Markou on guitars. At first it was an exploration of ideas, sounds, experiments and various recordings that gave them the urge to create a unique sound. David, having sung in various metal bands through the years, most notably Neue Regel, Vaudxdvihl, and Star Chamber, brought forward a lot of new and exciting ideas, sounds, mixtures and shades of light and dark musical composition, with and exceptional ear for detail and perfection.

Tony, along the same lines, played in various bands through the years, in various genres. From Blues to hard rock and heavy metal. After years persisting with his passion, he realised that he needed to push his own boundaries and limits and start something fresh. Upon meeting David, it was an instantaneous realisation that they could really work well as a team, and create something they can honestly say is their best work to date.

Joined Later by Mark emblin on drums the band began working on their debut album, SIMPLE CHAOS. Delivering a collaboration of musical styles, Emotion filled composition and lyrics, and a dynamic approach, Fracture has certainly created their masterpiece.

Tetrafusion – ALTERED STATE
Label: Nightmare Records
Style: Metal
Release: October 12, 2010

Tetrafusion’s blend of complex, technical metal blended with a highly-intellectual melodic structure offers an eclectic brand of progressive rock and metal along the likes of Porcupine Tree, Rush, Dream Theater, Cynic, Tool, and Muse. Originally an instrumental band, the band released their debut record ABSOLUTE ZERO to critical acclaim, which quickly launched the band into the underground metal scene, sans vocals, along the likes of Scale The Summit, Animals As Leaders, Liquid Tension Experiment, and Canvas Solaris, and was hailed as one of the top ten albums of 2009 by Ultimate-Guitar.com. Also commented Mark Michell in a recent interview with Examiner.com about the new release: “We really took a new direction musically. It’s our first record to feature vocals, and we didn’t want to have ABSOLUTE ZERO, PART 2 with vocals over it, so we decided to just completely change our approach. I think ALTERED STATE’s biggest slogan is ‘substance over style,’ where as our debut was very style-oriented and straightforward. We definitely haveour progressive, crazy fast heavy moments, but we took a step back and gave it a lot more atmosphere which is something I think we needed on many levels.”

Toxxic Toyz – MUTATION
Label: Nightmare Records
Style: Metal
Release: October 12, 2010

This is an extremely powerful sophomore album for a band that has been around playing the French scene since 2003. Toxxic Toyz’ brand of music is a blending of extremely aggressive heavy rock and melodic power metal with great technical proficiency, tendencies and great song writing, vocalist David McBee’s voice fits this music perfectly, he’s got a raw attitude basted in melody that brings listening accessibility, lyrically this album is screaming to the sleeping masses of the world not aware that their becoming slaves to the new world order, wake up, it’s now or never, wake up you sheeple, it’s TIME TO WAKE UP and reclaim your freedom. The freedom of the mind, the freedom of independent thought freedom of our spirit to rise above the corporate media’s calculated social programing.

This band believes in the raw rock attitude of no keyboard embellishments, it’s in your face and it’s all good. The songs clock in between 5-7 minutes in length without getting boring due to the band’s ability to blend old school riffs into more up-tempo technical and aggressive mature structures.

Darkwater’s perfect blend of melodic and progressive metal was something the scene was craving for, and while taking inspiration from bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater and Evergrey, Darkwater have for sure created a sound of their own.

In May 2008 Darkwater recorded and released a music video for the track “The Play II” and in June they went did their first show in the US, at the Bay Area Rock Fest together with Liquid Tension Experiment and Jeff Scott Soto, among others.

Norlander will speak on the final technology panel of the festival, “The Power Of Modular Synthesis,” scheduled for Sunday, October 31st at 4:15 p.m. He will also demonstrate the enduring technology of his Wall Of Doom, a massive Moog modular analog synthesizer whose core dates back to 1967. The panel will be held at the Moogaplex, located at the Haywood Park complex.

Moogfest — the annual event honoring the remarkable vision of Robert Moog and his amazing musical inventions that changed the course of music — is reinventing itself. This year, Moogfest 2010 will move from New York City to Asheville, NC — the place Bob Moog called home for the last 30 years of his life — and will expand to a 3-day, multi-venue event during the weekend of October 29-31, 2010. During the festival, Moogfest 2010 will host artists and audiences from throughout the world in different venues throughout Asheville’s beautiful, historic downtown. Moogfest 2010 will celebrate Bob Moog’s legacy as a sonic pioneer, which will be the thread that unites the festival’s rich array of musical offerings.

In addition to fantastic concerts by renowned performers of all kinds, Moogfest 2010 will also offer opportunities to engage with artists in panel discussions, question and answer sessions, and workshops. There will also be interactive experiences for the audience to explore their own musical creativity with a variety of Moog instruments. The festival will also offer visual art exhibitions, installations, and film screenings throughout the weekend. http://www.moogfest.com/

In the Moog spirit, Erik Norlander has also penned an article running in the current issue of Keyboard magazine, “Beyond And Because Of The Minimoog,” a retrospective on the many synthesizers that came into existence because of the Minimoog’s groundbreaking design. Erik’s all-Moog track for The Bob Moog Foundation, “The Princely Hours,” is also now available for download on iTunes:

Erik Norlander is a progressive rock keyboardist, composer and producer from California. He has written and produced over 30 albums since 1993 with his chanteuse spouse Lana Lane, his band Rocket Scientists, his own solo albums and numerous guest appearances. Erik’s evocative keyboard technique is reminiscent of the legendary Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz and Jon Lord while still very unique and forward-moving in its own right. Erik takes many of the classic riffs and phrases of his heroes and reinvents them with highly emotional pitch bending, vibrato and authoritative phrasing. This technique combines brilliantly with Erik’s mastery of sound and production. Erik has personally led sound design efforts on several major brand synthesizers, and his knowledge of synthesis and audio engineering are second to none. Erik’s perpetual live use of vintage and classic instruments, particularly Moog synthesizers, give his concerts a depth and authenticity of sound seldom seen in modern stage productions.

Erik’s latest solo release THE GALACTIC COLLECTIVE (2010), an prog rock tour de force of re-imaginings of his best instrumental compositions written for Lana Lane, Rocket Scientists and his previous solo albums. Previous solo albums are THRESHOLD (1997), and instrumental progressive effort with a decidedly electronically bent and INTO THE SUNSET (2000), a prog metal vocal album with a more traditional rock band sound. Erik’s third album is a 2CD rock opera concept album with an all-star cast entitled MUSIC MACHINE about the dramatic rise and fall of genetically engineered rock star. The MUSIC MACHINE rock opera was released worldwide in June, 2003, followed by a successful European tour with Lana Lane and vocalist Kelly Keeling. In 2004, he released his live recording STARS RAIN DOWN featuring concerts in Europe. Later in 2004, Erik released a wholly electronic CD titled SEAS OF ORION which debuted at the Dutch Alfa Centauri Electronic Music Festival where Erik headlined that year. Erik’s DVD/CD titled LIVE IN ST. PETERSBURG, recorded in the Russian “northern capitol,” was released in July, 2006. In 2006, Erik released HOMMAGE SYMPHONIQUE, an album of classic progressive rock cover songs produced and arranged in Norlander’s signature style. Additional recent releases include his band Rocket Scientists’ REVOLUTION ROAD (October, 2006) and LOOKING BACKWARD (November 2007); and Lana Lane’s GEMINI (November 2006), RED PLANET BOULEVARD (November 2007) and BEST OF LANA LANE 2000-2008, released in November, 2008.

In 2007, Erik joined Asia Featuring John Payne, the latest incarnation of the classic supergroup, as the band’s keyboardist. He has toured extensively with the group throughout 2008 and 2009 and is working on new studio recordings. In 2009, Erik also toured in Europe with another supergroup, Big Noize, featuring hard rock all stars Joe Lynn Turner, Simon Wright, Phil Soussan and Carlos Cavazo. Erik also works extensively with The Bob Moog Foundation, performed a 2009 concert along with Keith Emerson to open “The Legacy Of Moog” exhibit at The Museum Of Making Music in Carlsbad, California, and the epic “Moogus Operandi” concert in Asheville, North Carolina in 2010.

Infectious Grooves was formed soon after Robert Trujillo joined cross over thrash kings Suicidal Tendencies in 1989. Muir and Trujillo got together with some friends to write song that centered more around the bass, but with the intent of giving everyone else a whole lot of freedom. As a precursor to the performance, Suicidal Records released Infectious Grooves/Cyco Miko’s FUNK IT UP & PUNK IT UP: LIVE IN FRANCE ’95. Recorded live in Lyon, France in 1995 by soundman Tom Abraham straight from the board with zero sound alterations, this never-before-released double live gem features original Infectious Grooves members Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies), Robert Trujillo (now with Metallica), Dean Pleasants (Suicidal Tendencies), Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion), and Dave Nassie (former No Use For A Name; current Bleeding Through). The tour wound its way through Europe, with all the members pulling double duty playing Infectious Grooves and Cyco Miko sets each night.

In related news, Suicidal Tendencies, who recently announced their long-anticipated U.S. tour set to commence later this month, have added additional dates to the trek including a performance at New York City’s Terminal 5 with Cro-Mags and Underdog. Check additional listings below:

-Dakrya: New Full-Length To Be Released By Sensory Records

When seven Greek charlatans get together, the musical visions that spring from their minds can only be described as a true freakshow.

Back in late 2004 the idea of a band that could develop a theatrical attitude and combine different musical elements with the dynamics of metal and rock sound, brought Dakrya to life. Following the usual demos and local live shows, the band released its debut album MONUMENTO in the spring of 2008. Receiving great reviews and good support from both the media and the fans in and around Greece, Dakrya started touring on a broader scale, supporting international bands such as Moonspell and more.

In 2009 the band began to work on new material; the main goal was to put even more emphasis on the “theatrical” style of Dakrya, and in January 2010 the band entered the studio with engineer George Bokos (Rotting Christ), to record their sophomore album CRIME SCENE. Come March 2010 the band found themselves sitting in a studio in Sweden mixing the album together with Pelle Saether (Diablo Swing Orchestra, Draconian, Madder Mortem), followed by a trip to another Swedish sound guru, Göran Finnberg (Opeth, In Flames, Arch Enemy) for the mastering of the disc.

From beginning to end, CRIME SCENE is a one-of-a-kind musical experience. Ranging from the psychotic and cinematic melodrama heard in bands like Diablo Swing Orchestra and Unexpect to the orchestrated gothic metal comparable to Therion and Theatre Of Tragedy, Dakrya paints their mark all over the canvas.

Check out the promotional video for the album, cover art and more:

CRIME SCENE track listing:

1. The Charlatans
2. Blind Man’s Bluff
3. Scaremongering
4. The Urban Tribe
5. Camouflage
6. Phantasmagoria
7. Inertia
8. Dramatis Personae
9. A Dreadful Side Scene

Check out ABSOLUTE DISSENT studio footage:

Formed in London, England, in October 1978, Killing Joke was the brainchild of classically trained musician and vocalist Jeremy “Jaz” Coleman and drummer “Big” Paul Ferguson, who eagerly recruited two like-minded comrades in the form of guitarist Kevin “Geordie” Walker and bassist Martin “Youth” Glover and set about establishing a brand new and highly idiosyncratic manifesto for reinventing the rock ‘n’ roll wheel. Coming to life during what would become known as the “post-punk” era, Killing Joke were never willing to conform to the artistic restrictions of any particular scene or genre. Instead, they took a vast and bewildering array of influences and experience, and combined them to create something entirely unique and utterly timely that still stands up today.

Over the years, the band members have chosen to develop their talents in a variety of ways: Triple Grammy winner Jaz Coleman, for instance, has established an international reputation working with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras, while Martin “Youth” Glover has become one of the UK’s most celebrated producers, supervising albums from the Verve and Primal Scream among many others, as well as achieving major success as one half of highly-regarded duo, The Orb.

Covered by Metallica, Foo Fighters and so many others, Killing Joke’s apocalyptic post punk/industrial vision continues to draw praise from such high-profile supporters as Jimmy Page and Billy Corgan, and the band’s considerable musical legacy can be heard in the works of Nirvana, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails and the like — artists whose rise to fame never saw them cutting ties with the underground/alternative scene.

Once described by Paul Ferguson as “the sound of the earth vomiting,” Killing Joke are now poised to take their music of resistance to a whole new level, both in the studio and on the road. Stay tuned…

“…that a band can remain so tightly coiled and sharply focused after so many years at the watchtower is a commendable thing indeed.” — Kerrang

“…this album is proof that Killing Joke is a force of nature, not just a band. They can do anything, be anything, move into any place they want and always stay ahead of the curve. Call off the dogs everybody; the best album of 2010 is here.” — Crave

“ABSOLUTE DISSENT marks the original lineup of Jaz Coleman, Geordie, Youth and Paul Ferguson recording together for the first time in 27 years. It’s pretty obvious that their reunion together as a band was a fruitful one. This literally is their best work in as many years.” — Lithium

-Maddam Ink To Debut INKLINATION Featuring The Single “Carry Me Home” Via CD Baby And iTunes

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Big catchy hooks and hard driving riffs only begin to describe this new release from the Pennsylvania based outfit Maddam Ink. A totally unique combination of modern rock, alternative rock, and just plain old ass-kicking rock is on display in INKLINATION, the band’s sophomore release.

Produced by Grammy™ nominated engineer and producer David Ivory (Halestorm, Silvertide) INKLINATION was born from six months of sweat and blood in the studio while grinding out these dynamic tracks. “As a group, we felt as though the band was going in a different direction with this album as opposed to our first record,” stated Adam Burke, the group’s lead singer and guitarist, “originally we were calling it A STEP IN A RIGHT DIRECTION but eventually went with INKLINATION believing it was a catchier title and more to the point.”

While Burke is the band’s undisputed leader, he is accompanied on the journey by three other rock steady musicians, lead guitarist and back vocalist Matt Scott, bassist and back vocalist Steve Benecke, and Kyle Young on drums. The three provide the killer rhythm section, and melodic guitar riffs to Burkes’ red hot vocals.

INKLINATION showcases this energetic band like never before with greater maturity in the songwriting, more diversity, and a broader selection of instrumentation. One might be hesitant to categorize this act and their new CD in any particular genre. The wide range of song styles from hard driving rock to melodic rock ballads only further displays the band’s unique and diversified mainstream sound. And how does Burke feel Maddam Ink fits into the Modern rock and mainstream market? “Our music has a very cool rhythmic edge to it and provides great melodies, energy, and most importantly huge hooks throughout every song. It easily fits into a variety of markets but we definitely believe it’s in the active rock mainstream.”

This is especially evident on such standout tracks as “Carry Me Home” and “Falling.” The band easily shifts from hard driving rhythms to more soothing melodic rock with no apparent ambiguity in determining that this is unquestionably Maddam Ink throughout the record. While Burke has a few personal favorites he states “there are so many good songs on this album that it’s very difficult to choose which one we feel is the strongest. You could play this record for ten different people and get ten different opinions on which song is the best. Fan reaction at our shows leads me to believe that ‘Coletrane’ is a fan favorite.”

“The single on this album, ‘Carry Me Home,’ with its obvious strong hook and melodic riffs is without question the stand out track on this record,” states the band’s manager Ken Cavalier. “This song just brings it home on every turn. It’s our view that it’s destined to be an undeniable hit.”

Maddam Ink plans an upcoming tour to support the new album. Currently INKLINATION is available at CD Baby and by digital download at iTunes.com.

-Mortiis’ PERFECTLY DEFECT: Perfectly Free!

OSLO, NORWAY — Mortiis returns to satiate fans’ desire for new music this October 10 with PERFECTLY DEFECT, a completely free, full-length, downloadable album.

“Putting PERFECTLY DEFECT out as a free download was a decision we made after some consideration,” said the band’s namesake Mortiis. “The new model of the music business is important to keep in mind; there’s a new mentality out there in terms of how people acquire their music now. For better or worse, music seems to have become a medium a lot of people aren’t prepared to pay for in the old fashioned way. So, we paid to record it out of our own pockets ‘cos we thought it would be a really cool gift to our fans that have been waiting around for ages for something new to come out.”

Mortiis has spent much of the past couple years writing and recording THE GREAT DECEIVER, the long-awaited follow-up to 2004’s full-length THE GRUDGE and the 2007 remix album, SOME KIND OF HEROIN. PERFECTLY DEFECT is the quintessential prelude to the world of THE GREAT DECEIVER — while the latter is heavier and darker, the former is varied, experimental, and largely instrumental. The bottom line is that PERFECTLY DEFECT leads into THE GREAT DECEIVER acting as a crucial stage in the evolution of Mortiis’ music.

“When we were writing and working on THE GREAT DECEIVER, we were coming up with all sorts of inspired stuff, a really varied collection of music,” Mortiis offered. “Some of it was far too varied and experimental to be included in such an angry, dark album as THE GREAT DECEIVER so we created a brand new album that is the introductory element to the more intricate world of THE GREAT DECEIVER.”

“I think we really captured a cool vibe here,” Mortiis enthused. “It’s not easy marrying anger with melody, but I believe we did it. The songs on PERFECTLY DEFECT were created across a period of time, and I believe it shows in terms of what inspired these songs. They’re rather soundtrack-y in a dark and sometimes bombastic way.”

With the concept of digital distribution came a new empowerment for Mortiis — one where the artist controls his own artistic destiny.

“After our record deal finally expired, I had developed a profound aversion to the very idea of letting other people control my art, my lifework,” he said. “So, again, the idea of the new technology really did grow on me. We dealt with some really evil stuff in the industry. Nothing shocking in terms of industry practice, but at a human level, it was a living nightmare. It reached a point where we fired everyone around us except for the handful of people we knew we could trust. It was a big move, but had to be done in order to survive. It was like rewinding the clock back to the start and beginning with a clean slate. We started working on a ton of new music right then. With the advent of modern technology, we realized we could do a lot of stuff without the often self-serving, meddling record labels. No record label would ever have let us put out an album for free, with the option to donate if the fans wanted to.”

The album will be available at http://www.mortiis.com/ beginning on October 10. There is no cost for the download, but donations to cover the cost of recording may be made through the website.

If you’ve been through as much metal as to consider yourself a metalhead, then you have doubtless seen pretty much every kind of mythology or legend or folklore or what have you, exploited by a new up and coming band. After a while, it becomes difficult for a band to come up with something new. So, I have to hand it to Germany’s Atlantean Kodex, for truly using their noggins and ingeniously using a mythological piece that I have not seen used before. The band has chosen Sir James George Frazer’s epic magnum opus, “The Golden Bough” as a basis for their concept album. To familiarize you with Frazer’s work, “The Golden Bough” is a studious piece which hypothesizes that all of Europe’s religions are all linked to occult themes, mysticism, and other tribal rituals dating back to the Stone Age. Christianity plays a dominant role, but it gets twisted and contorted under the spell of so much religious fervor in the air. Essentially though, the idea of an utopist world is brought forth, where the people of the world join hands and put aside their differences whether that be race, sex, or social status, and coexist peacefully. But the mood is not always so cheery and optimistic: enter Atlantis; the city that symbolizes dejection and loss; grieving and regret. The album treads in melancholy waters as it helplessly yearns for a better, tolerant world. Musically, the album is straight up power metal. It invokes an ’80s feel, but produced in a 21st century way. It’s an album that you listen to when you want to hear a story. It’s something for the metalhead who is not satisfied with undecipherable screams and who wants to something deeper to ruminate about. The use of non-musical soundscapes is expertly used to segue into metaldom. Sometimes it is the sound of blistery wind; sometimes it is the sound of the turning tides in the ocean. You’ll hear folklore-ish strings ticking away and enchanting flutes fluttering. On, “Temple of Katholic Magik” you can’t help but feel as if you have just stepped into a medieval cathedral when you hear the sounds of droning chanting echoing from some unseen corner. Then the guitars slide in ever so melodically and take the story into a new direction. Vocalist Markus Becker sings in an angelically clean voice, exuding power from the force of his long held out screams. And even for power metal, a surreptitious kind of darkness still pervades. It lives in the guitars, and it does a good job of camouflaging itself behind the flashy guitar solo pieces that liven up the songs. Overall, I must say, Atlantean Kodex picked a theme worthy of exploration and didn’t fail to make their interpretation intricate and interesting. And, of course, the album is musically sound. A must for power metal lovers; and worth a gander from anyone who claims metal as their music.

Do you like cover bands? Well then, I have dug up something tasty for you from the underground. The Atlas Moth have just released four-track EP, THE ONE AMONGST THE WEED FIELDS. It’s a follow-up from their first full-length album, A GLORIFIED PIECE OF BLUE SKY, which debuted last fall, indicating that they are mighty prolific. The Atlas Moth have amalgamated their sound to fuse sludge, doom and psychedelia. The first cover on the album is “Five To One,” an homage to The Doors. The vocals here are imbued with a heavy dose of brutality. Yet the instrumentation doesn’t encourage the ferocity. Instead it takes its own path and decides to dawdle along. Next up is “California Dreamin'” originally penned by The Mamas & The Papas. It dances along to a bluesy, sludgy beat, but the vocals shriek out in gut-wrenching screams. There are some mellow, almost grungy sounding vocals that are drowned out in the background, which makes for an odd song. But it’s an oddness with fluidity that actually works. Then we drift at a leisurely pace into Pink Floyd’s “Fearless.” You’re hurtled into a time machine and taken back to groovy times. To call the song psychedelic would be a gross understatement. And finally, the fourth and final song is a cover of Failure’s “Golden.” We’re still enjoying the peace and love atmosphere from the previous track. Though the funky guitar work dazzles you and demands your attention; almost like a cobra being transfixed by a snake charmer. Quite honestly, I am partial to cover songs. It’s always interesting to see a band either totally transform a song into something unrecognizable to the original, or tweak it just slightly as to give it something new. Oddly enough, I don’t like cover bands. The difference is, lack of original work. I appreciate a cover song on full album of new, creative songs. Hell, I even like it when a band will put out a cover album amid all of their original works. But to be just a cover band seems like a fraud. You’ll always know the lyrics, the beat, or something before you ever hear the track. Sure, The Atlas Moth does indeed put their stamp on each of the songs they cover, but their entire career is predictable. You know that they cannot do something new, for they are anchored to the past. The Atlas Moth began their career with a five-track EP, so perhaps EPs are just simply their style. And that’s their prerogative, but for me, EPs just don’t cut it. I’m always left wanting to hear more, and THE ONE AMONGST THE WEED FIELDS is no exception.
