-This is probably going to be the last you’ll hear from Detritus for a while — on a consistent basis anyway. I have a huge new commitment at work that will take up most of my time for the rest of the year. I’ll send out reviews and interviews when possible, but the news and press releases (whose editing takes up most of my time) will definitely fall off for the time being. – Tim

-Mike Portnoy Leaves Dream Theater

[Note: This comes from http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/m2585154.aspx . – Tim]

I am about to write something I never imagined I’d ever write:

After 25 years, I have decided to leave Dream Theater… the band I founded, led and truly loved for a quarter of a century.

To many people this will come as a complete shock, and will also likely be misunderstood by some, but please believe me that it is not a hasty decision… it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so…

After having had such amazing experiences playing with Hail, Transatlantic and Avenged Sevenfold this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in Dream Theater…

Please don’t misinterpret me, I love the DT guys dearly and have a long history, friendship and bond that runs incredibly deep with them… it’s just that I think we are in serious need of a little break…

Dream Theater was always my baby… and I nurtured that baby every single day and waking moment of my life since 1985… 24/7, 365… never taking time off from DT’s never-ending responsibilites (even when the band was “off” between cycles)… working overtime and way beyond the call of duty that most sane people ever would do for a band…

But I’ve come to the conclusion that the DT machine was starting to burn me out… and I really needed a break from the band in order to save my relationship with the other members and keep my DT spirit hungry and inspired.

We have been on an endless write/record/tour cycle for almost 20 years now (of which I have overseen EVERY aspect without a break) and while a few months apart from each other here & there over the years has been much needed and helpful, I honestly hoped the band could simply agree with me to taking a bit of a “hiatus” to recharge our batteries and “save me from ourselves”…

Sadly, in discussing this with the guys, they determined they do not share my feelings and have decided to continue without me rather than take a breather… I even offered to do some occasional work throughout 2011 against my initial wishes, but it was not to be…

While it truly hurts for me to even think of a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!!), I do not want to stand in their way… so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes…

Strangely enough, I just read an interview that I recently did that asked me about the future of DT and I talked about “always following your heart and being true to yourself”… sadly I must say that at this particular moment, my heart is not with Dream Theater… and I would simply be “going through the motions”, and would honestly NOT be true to myself if I stayed for the sake of obligation without taking the break I felt I needed.

I wish the guys the best and hope the music and legacy we created together is enjoyed by fans for decades to come… I am proud of every album we made, every song we wrote and every show we played…

I’m sorry to all the disappointed DT fans around the world… I really tried to salvage the situation and make it work… I honestly just wanted a break (not a split)… but happiness cannot be forced, it needs to come from within…

You DT fans are the greatest fans in the world and as you all know, I have always busted my ass for you guys and I hope that you will stay with me on my future musical journey, wherever it may lead me… (and as you all know my work ethic, there will surely be no shortage of future MP projects!)

Your fearless ex-leader and drummer,

“Move on be brave, don’t weep at my grave, because I am no longer here…
But please never let your memory of me disappear…”
— The Spirit Carries On

[This is the band’s official statement taken from http://www.dreamtheater.net/ . – Tim]

Dream Theater Press Release

To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with profound sadness — regret — we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike’s stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically, and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band.

While it is true that Mike is choosing to pursue other ventures and challenges, we can assure you that Dream Theater will continue to move forward with the same intensity — and in the same musical tradition — that you have all helped make so successful, and which is truly gratifying to us.

Fans and friends: File this episode under “Black Clouds and Silver Linings.” As planned, we begin recording our newest album in January 2011, and we’ll follow that with a full-on world tour. “The Spirit Carries On.”

All of us in Dream Theater wholeheartedly wish Mike the best on his musical journey. We have had a long and meaningful career together. It is our true hope that he finds all he is looking for, and that he achieves the happiness he deserves. He will be missed.

-Niji Entertainment Group Inc. To Issue First Release — DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 2-CD Set — On November 9th, 2010

2010 will go down as the year that we lost one of hard rock/heavy metal’s all-time great vocalists, Ronnie James Dio (after a valiant battle with cancer). Throughout a career that saw Ronnie pen or co-pen classics with such legendary acts as Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and with his solo group, Dio, there are simply not enough words to describe the singer’s contribution to rock music worldwide. And to celebrate the life of the man that has become synonymous with metal, several new releases will soon be arriving, that are certain to please Dio’s large and loyal fanbase.

On November 9th, the double disc set, DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 will be released. The first disc was recorded at the first-ever UK performance by Dio’s solo group, while on tour supporting their classic debut, HOLY DIVER. And the set list does a superb job reflecting Dio’s debut (featuring such classics as “Rainbow In The Dark,” “Stand Up And Shout,” etc.), as well as classics from both Rainbow and Black Sabbath (“Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Heaven And Hell,” etc.) — resulting in a thorough retrospective of Dio’s career, from Rainbow to Black Sabbath to solo hits. The second disc of DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 features guitarist Craig Goldy’s debut — recorded in 1987, in support of the DREAM EVIL album, and contains highlights from Dio’s career.

DIO AT DONINGTON UK: LIVE 1983 & 1987 will be the very first release from the Niji Entertainment Group (which was formed by Ronnie James Dio and his wife/manager, Wendy Dio, in early 2010). The set will be released as a deluxe digi-pak including a booklet filled with rare photographs and liner notes, and original replica all access laminates from both shows. Ronnie was the executive producer on the Donington project, and was very much looking forward to the release. The Niji Entertainment Group is a full service record label, and will be releasing rare and unreleased recordings from Dio and other artists.

November 23rd will see two additional releases from the Niji Entertainment Group — a deluxe limited edition picture disc of Dio’s classic solo debut, HOLY DIVER, and BITTEN BY THE BEAST from David “Rock” Feinstein. “Rock” is Ronnie’s cousin, and was a member of Elf, and the leader of the legendary NY band The Rods. BITTEN BY THE BEAST features the single “Metal Will Never Die,” with lead vocals by Ronnie James Dio. This single will be heavily worked to active rock and metal radio this fall.

In 2011, the Niji Entertainment Group has many other Dio-related projects planned, including an extensive vinyl box set (an idea that Ronnie himself came up with), FOR THE RECORD: THE COMPLETE DIO VINYL COLLECTION, which will feature 16 LPs in a deluxe carrying case, with “all access tour laminates” from every tour. All of the LPs will be on 180 gram colored vinyl. Also, being released for the first time on DVD will be SUPER ROCK JAPAN 1985 (which was only ever released in Japan on VHS). Another forthcoming DVD release will be a collection of every Dio MTV promotional video, plus live concert footage including bonus features, including interviews with Ronnie, his band, and crew.

A Dio bootleg box set is on the horizon as well, featuring never-before-released sound board recordings and audience recordings. Other releases from the Niji Entertainment Group in 2011 will include all four Rainbow Dio-era LPs in their original gatefold sleeves on 180 gram colored vinyl, and all three Elf LPs will be issued on 180 gram colored vinyl. 2011 will also see deluxe reissues from Tim “Ripper” Owens, a fantastic new CD from Oni Logan (Lynch Mob vocalist), and Rowan Robertson (Dio guitarist), as well as live Elf.

Between Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, the Dio social media followers now numbers over one million. The Niji Entertainment Group is in the process of starting the official Dio webstore, which will give fans worldwide opportunity to purchase T-shirts, limited edition items, and CDs/DVDs that fans have been requesting.

While Ronnie was alive, he always wanted to have his own action figure/statue. And now, this has become a reality — KnuckleBonz has created the Ronnie James Dio rock iconz statue, which will be available in late fall 2010. These statues are only produced in limited edition runs of 3,000, which make them highly collectible and sought after from fans. A portion from the sales of the Dio statue will go to the Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund, in honor of Ronnie James Dio. Preorders available by visiting http://www.knucklebonz.com/ .

-Avantasia: Tour & Guests!

In November the all-star ensemble Avantasia will embark on their first worldwide indoor arena tour ever and write a new chapter in Heavy Metal history. Kicking off in Pratteln, Switzerland on November 30th the all-star project will set off on a three-week-journey to bring the prestigious Metal Opera event to three different continents around the planet.

Featuring some of Hard Rock and Metal’s best vocalists of all times, such as Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Bob Catley (Magnum), Amanda Somerville, Oliver Hartmann and former Helloween vocalist Michael Kiske, another star has now been confirmed to be part of the travelling “Metal Opera”; a semi-god in Asia, Mister German Metal, formerly Helloween, now Gamma Ray: the one and only Mr. Kai Hansen!

Host Tobias overjoyed: “Kai will have a vocal role and play some guitar too. We’ve been friends for quite a while now. I remember, I was a little kid when I first heard Helloween’s KEEPER albums. And that was the instant that lit a spark in me. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see Helloween with Michael and Kai on stage, but they’ll make up for it now! Both have played an important role for me personally and for the history of Avantasia and its Metal Opera in particular. I am looking forward to sharing the stage with them and play some of our old Avantasia classics together.”

So Tobi’s dream will come true and he is happy to welcome Michael Kiske as well. Tobias Sammet: “I remember back in 1999 I did everything to get Michael Kiske involved in what was just an album project at the time, Avantasia’s METAL OPERA. I was a happy boy in a toy store when I heard the tunes I had tailored for him, anthems like ‘Reach Out For The Light,’ ‘The Tower,’ ‘No Return’ and he was an important corner stone for making Avantasia a classic amongst melodic Metal fans all over the world. I tried hard to convince Michael to enter the stage when Avantasia played their festival shows in 2008, but the time was not right. Now the stars have lined up and I am looking forward — as a representative of Avantasia and even more so as a fan to having Michael enter the stage to perform those kinds of classic Metal tracks for the first time in more than 17 years. I am looking forward to having Bob and Jorn, Amanda, Olli Hartmann, Sascha and Miro and all my fellow-Avantasians on stage again. Maybe we will have some more surprises, let’s see. Let’s reach out for the light!”

-Forbidden: OMEGA WAVE Cover Artwork Revealed!

Reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrashers Forbidden have debuted the artwork to their new studio album, OMEGA WAVE, on their official MySpace page.

Forbidden guitarist / songwriter Craig Locicero checks in about his collaborative process with artist Kent Mathieu, the visual elements that can be found in the album’s artwork, and his concern for the future of the human race:

“As soon as Forbidden committed to writing a new record, I wondered where Kent Mathieu was. I’d always felt like FORBIDDEN EVIL and TWISTED INTO FORM were pretty iconic album covers… when things like that actually seemed to matter.

“Then, the good people at Nuclear Blast actually located Kent! I got pretty excited and reached out to him immediately. He was equally excited to hear from us, too. The only real direction I gave Kent was to somehow tie the past into the future. Find a way to make the two skulls [from FORBIDDEN EVIL’s artwork] vital again. He had worked up about 12 sketches all kinds of variously cool stuff. Out of all of the pictures he sent me, I liked the way one of them was laid out because of it’s simplicity. After thinking about it for a long while, I had a concept for Kent to work with. The OMEGA WAVE concept. The title wasn’t decided until I had a good idea for the cover.

“I don’t want to over-explain the actual picture because there is enough symbolism for everyone to interpret everything differently. That is always a plus, in my book. What I can tell you is that the skull in the center is based upon the crystal skull of Belize. This skull was found at some of the pyramid ruins in two perfect pieces, jawbone and upper cranium. It was always quite a mystery, but some years later Hewlett Packard scientists did extensive tests on the skull and found many anomalies.

“One of them was that there is no way, even with our most modern technology, that we could cut into the crystal the way this skull was formed. It would shatter with any instrument we have available, even today. Another thing was the fact that no matter what temperature the skull was placed in, the skull’s temperature would stay almost exactly the same. Scientists even believe the skull holds information that they could not tap into, like a giant computer chip with an impenetrable code.

“So I got to thinking: Does this skull — and the other ones found throughout the most ancient places on Earth — hold something that we would need to know to possibly save ourselves? This is not an entirely new concept, but it hit me pretty hard. What could we learn about ourselves that may save us at this all-important juncture for the human race?

“It seems as if we’ve reached our Omega stage as a civilization. Meaning, we as people seem to be in a hurry to reach some sort of ending… possibly all self-manifested by accepting some sort of pre-determined fate. Or possibly just pawns in a game that was played out before and will be repeated again and again in other times and dimensions. So OMEGA WAVE is part science fact and part from my imagination.

“Kent Mathieu is a artistic genius who created something that respects this concept, as well as Forbidden’s past, present and future! All of this with one very strong hand-painted picture. That’s right, no computer manipulation whatsoever. Something else we can all be proud of! We hope you approve.”

OMEGA WAVE, Forbidden’s fifth studio album after a 13-year recording hiatus, will be released in Europe on October 22nd and on October 26th in North America. It was recorded at Sonic Room/Audio Voyage Studios in Livermore, California, produced by Forbidden guitarist / songwriter Craig Locicero with Tim Narducci, and mixed by Sean Beavan (Slayer, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails).

Forbidden 2010 features Russ Anderson on vocals, Craig Locicero on guitar, Steve Smyth on guitar, Matt Camacho on bass and Mark Hernandez on drums.

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Update

Two Side Moon Promotions are very excited to welcome to the party Oklahoma’s Bad Things.

Please find below the text info for the new album AGE OF WISDOM.

Band: Bad Things
Album Title: AGE OF WISDOM
Label: Bad Things Music
Release Date: May 28, 2010
Genre: Rock / Classic Rock

Bad Things was formed in 2005 in Tulsa, OK by Don Sloan initially playing mostly classic metal and rock cover songs. But tired of the cover scene and with a desire for writing solid hard rock original music, things began to change. Drummer Kelly Endsley (formerly of Hellablack and 13 West) joined the band in 2007, and fueled by this addition, the group starting working on new music immediately. Bad Things released a five song demo that received airplay on Z104.5 FM’s “Homegroan” radio show, which showcases local up and coming artists. They were also featured in podcasts from iRok radio. In 2008, Harvey Jackson (former bassist for Hellablack and 13 West) was added to the lineup. Now with a solid rhythm section, the band’s sound really began to take shape. The finishing touch came when Donnie Creitz was added in 2009 to help with the lead guitar duties.

Bad Things began working on their debut album, AGE OF WISDOM, in late 2009. The entire album was recorded and self-produced in their home studio in Tulsa, OK. The album was completed in early 2010 and released on May 28th on their own Bad Things Music label and is already receiving great reviews.

With a sound that draws on a variety of influences ranging from classic British hard rock to blues and southern rock and a live show full of in-your-face attitude, Bad Things has attracted fans of all ages and backgrounds and are consistently ranked in the Top 10 of local rock bands on the ReverbNation charts and in the top 3,000 rock bands globally. The ultimate goal is that everyone enjoys the music, has a great time, and proves that good rock ‘n roll has no boundaries. The best description of the Bad Things sound was given by a DyHardRadio DJ who described them as a combination of Molly Hatchet meets Motorhead.

Bad Things has shared the stage with bands such as Rhino Bucket, JetBoy, and Cockpit. In May 2010, they played the legendary rock festival Rocklahoma with bands such as ZZ Top, Godsmack, Buckcherry, Cinderella, Three Days Grace, Tesla, Sevendust, Lacuna Coil, Gypsy Pistoleros, Firtstryke, and many more. Two Side Moon Promotions are very excited to welcome to the party Sweden’s Bodinrocker.

Please find below the text info for the new album THE MYSTERIOUS MAN.

Band: Bodinrocker
Label: Bearman Music
Street Date: 2010
Genre: Rock

Bodinrocker is Anders Bodin from Gothenburg, Sweden. He’s been rocking on since he was a kid. He grew up in the middle of Sweden and started to write songs on the guitar at the age of ten. When he stepped in to his older brothers rooms there were posters all over the place of Status Quo, Slade and The Who. And that’s where Anders still is. Head down, legs apart. Melodic guitar riffs, straightforward rock and boogie is what it’s all about.

Through the years he’s been in some bands, but none of them really worked out well. In 2005 he decided to start a solo project. With great help from Lars Ekberg, his brother in law, he started the recordings that developed to the debut album, HALL OF FLAMES. It was released by his own company Bearman music, in late 2006. It ended up being a very guitar oriented album in the classic rock style and got some great attention. The title track was used by TV4, in Sweden, as background music when the swedish astronaut Christer Fuglesang was about to do his first space trip. The title track did also get some airplay in swedish radio along with “Golden Girl” and “The Way Back Home.”

In June 2008 Anders Bodin was back in the studio for his next album. He once again worked with the same musicians as from the first album. Great musicians who also have worked with well known swedish artists such as Jerusalem, Mikael Rickfors, Mats Ronander, Carola and many others. Lars Ekberg was once again back as the co-producer and the recordings took place in his own Oakmountain studio in Gothenburg. April 2010 saw the release of MYSTERIOUS MAN. An album loaded with melodies, guitar riffs, Hammond organ, boogie and straight forward rock. The songs are stories, adventures and reflections of life. Anders want to encourage the listeners to create their own adventures, to throw away the remote control and to explore life.

This time Anders Bodin decided to use his old nickname Bodinrocker. The first single, “Scooter,” was released as a digital single 29th of January 2010 and has got some great airplay in Sweden. “Scooter” charted at no 1 at SNL, Svenska Närradiolistan. The album MYSTERIOUS MAN was released 1st of April 2010 and is available both on CD and digital download.

Highlights of the year so far are the release party at the venue of Henriksberg in Gothenburg and of course being the opening act to the legendary Status Quo in Stenungsund, Sweden, in July.

-MaYaN: New Signing On Nuclear Blast!

Mark Jansen is a musical genius, and a workaholic as well. Although Epica has been touring around the world for months, he found the time to put another band together, which he takes very seriously: MaYaN. Mark founded MaYaN together with Jack Driessen (ex After Forever) and Frank Schiphorst, named after the wise and rich mayan culture.

“There was only one record label we wanted to sign with: Nuclear Blast, so we didn’t even look for other companies to work with and we’re very happy that this appreciation is mutual,” Mark says and announces: “The debut album will be recorded and mixed at the end of the year 2010 and the beginning of 2011 by Sascha Paeth (who produced the former Epica records as well). We’re also stoked to announce that Jeroen Paul Thesseling (Pestilence, Obscura), known for his signature six-string fretless playing in progressive death metal, will join as permanent member on bass guitar. Also Isaac Delahaye and Arien van Weesenbeek (Epica) will complete the lineup!”

The release of the album will take place around May 2011 and the CD presentation will take place at the “Paradiso” in Amsterdam. The music is a mixture of death, black and progressive metal combined with symphonic orchestral arrangements. “We’ll work with some very interesting guests and these will be announced very soon!”

-Total Descent

Total Descent are a Goth/Darkwave band fronted by the charismatic Sobriety Twist, an ex burlesque performer who holds the honour of being responsible for what critics described as “the most explicit act ever at the Edinburgh Fringe!” This was made even more impressive by the fact that she didn’t even remove a single item of her clothing.

Named after the song “Twist In My Sobriety” by Tinita Tikaram, Sobriety has a masters degree in Performance Art, is cousin to a Pagan High Priestess, and cites her favourite artistes as Siouxsie Sioux, Hazel O’Connor and Dolly Parton.

As can only be expected from a live performance artiste, Sobriety doesn’t conform! She was recently spotted at the Monaco Grand Prix party, in full ball gown, arm wrestling business men!

Sobriety is ably backed up by Dan Warren on drums, and Paul Bailey on guitar, both experienced rock musicians — Paul is an ex session guitarist who has worked with a myriad of household names.

Their trademark sullen lyrics are combined with the musical styles of metal & nu-metal, post punk, traditional rock and folk. Similarities of their work can be found in bands such Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees, Evanescence, Paradise Lost, Lacuna Coil and Rammstein.

They are currently finishing off their album in time for the launch next year and will be looking to tour the UK and Europe next Spring.

“Secrecy Sworn” is the track that the band class as their Christmas single, so its no wonder that this will be their debut single, due for release on October 17th.

When Hull’s latest album, SOLE LORD, came into my hands, I had high hopes. Why? Because the album artwork looked kickass! It shows off one of the imposing, gritty pyramids of Saqqara engulfed by an ocher atmosphere. I was hoping for an ancient Egyptian concept of some kind, but no. Or at least it is not obvious, because the vocals are not easily decipherable, and the music just doesn’t seem to match. Nothing makes you go, “That sounds Egyptian!” It doesn’t even sound epic. Alright, so upon researching this band, SOLE LORD was often compared to bands Isis and Neurosis, both of which I don’t listen to, and I’m not about to anytime soon. Like Mastodon or High On Fire? Those were two more comparisons. But let me describe it to you, and you can decide for yourself. We begin the saga with “Innocence,” which, actually does bring to mind a feeling of innocence. The delicate plucking on the guitars is so soft, you almost have to strain yourself to notice it. It lazily moves in and out from being audible, to well, practically nonexistent. The song sheds its apparent shyness and finally vocals materialize. And we get a surprise: there are two vocalists singing simultaneously. The overpowering one is raspy and growling, and the second is something reminiscent of power metal. The pace of the song makes you feel like you’re on a shameful path to exile, and the cries of the vocalist outwardly represent your anguish. “Transition” also begins quietly, the drumming almost sounding like background music for a movie. There’s some quirky techno sounds dusted in there too. Later on, the guitar work succeeds in sounding Middle Eastern-like, but it’s only for a moment. The vocal style plays around with this duet idea, where it seems like both of them are trying to out-yell one another. “Immortal” also gives way to very ambient sounding guitar pieces. It sounds soothing, because it is not terribly heavy and just kind of nods and bobs along. “Deliverance” delivers bluesy guitar work accompanied by stonerish drumming. “Wrath Of Sands” musters up a mildly menacing milieu. The guitar squeals wildly, but it’s stuck in the background, so you barely notice it. Even the cymbals on the drums are thrashing noisily, ah, but even that is muted. It gives the song a surrealistic quality. And yep, the song is devoid of vocals. While listening to “Wanderer,” you may have to go back and check if the song is even playing, because the first 40 seconds are annoyingly quiet. Then, taking a baby step, the guitars gently and sensuously twirl in. The song remains this way throughout its five-minute duration. “Architect” is the longest, and last, song on the album. It’s like a culmination of every song we have heard so far, which, I admit, is a nice way to end the album. Every single song exhibits low-quality production recording. It completely lacks intensity from start to finish, keeping you firmly grounded to the earth. Your feet are cemented, but your head is in the clouds, feeling hazy and oddly relaxed. One sign of Hull’s mediocrity is that I could instantly call to mind another band that sounds just like them. And it wasn’t a well-known band, but an underground one, also trying to escape to the surface. I shouldn’t be able to instantly compare a band to anyone. When you boil it down, strip it raw, SOLE LORD is nothing new.

If there was ever one band to epitomize the genre of Southern metal, then King Giant is it. I know, I know, ya’ll have your favorites, but you may be surprised to learn that they’ve been compared to some of the top dogs: Sabbath, Kyuss, Down, Clutch, Corrosion Of Conformity… you name it. Not only that, but just about every stereotypical “southern” or “country” word has been used to describe their music. They are everything from being “bikers” to “outlaws” to “country boys.” I’m also going jump on the bandwagon with what others have said and recommend a shot — or a better yet, a shooter of your favorite Kentucky whisky when you plop in King Giant’s debut album, SOUTHERN DARKENSS. This rambunctious quintet from the DC vicinity have been cranking out their brand of Southern goodness since 2006, and have had a few changes. In 2007, they lost one of their own, vocalist Bob Dotolo. SOUTHERN DARKNESS is christened with Dave Hammerly’s gravelly voice. “Solace” welcomes us into stark stoner metal territory with groovy guitars and rhythmic drumming. Hammerly’s voice enraptures you with raspy anguish, with lyrics already submerged in pain. Infectiously the chorus chants “Solace!” a few times over, leaving an indelible stamp in your mind for the rest of the day. There’s some kickass soloing towards the end, making for a killer close to the song. “Burning Regrets” churns its guitars into something bluesy and at the same time gritty and tough. The vocals are slightly drowned out over the crashing torrent of the drumming and the guitars. I felt like if King Giant were playing live, I would want to go up there and turn the volume up on the mic. But perhaps its better that the vocals aren’t stealing the show. Perhaps it would take away from the stoner metal vibe… waking it out of its mellow slumber. So I won’t knock King Giant for it. It works for them. I totally loved the opening to “13 To 1.” King Giant, again perpetuating their Southern allegiance, incorporated a banjo! That’s earns them kudos in badassery, because honestly, not everyone can pull that off in metal. “Light a smoke, close my eyes, feel that rope is tight, yes; clear my mind. Light that smoke, the cold night sky… a good night to die.” Man oh man that is intense! Lyrics penned by the hand of tormented soul, when all hope is gone. “Mississippi River” almost sounds like a country song when it begins. Here, the gruffy vocals have been cleaned up a bit, and that drumming is so damn catchy, it is unmistakably a country song masquerading as metal. I like it though, because it shows how the genres can be combined into something that metalheads will still enjoy. “Potter’s Field” is another stony assault, showcasing another arduous guitar solo. “Machine Gun Matra” — let this be your future anthem to revolution and destruction. It is such a goddamn catchy song, it latches unto your mind like a Southern fried leech. “Lady Whisky” — aw how sweet, a song for yours truly. Kidding, but you know any song with “whisky” in the title is going to be both bitter and sultry, yet intoxicating and hypnotizing. And it’s pierced by the knife of sorrow, making for the most quintessential southern/rock/stoner metal song ever. I just love it. “Hollow” begins as if you’re still drunk off of “Lady Whisky” (admit it, you are), but then transforms into something heavier and meaner. It’s a good song to start on with another swig of whisky — or your favorite boozy beverage and just relax. It’s got that kind of vibe. Two more tracks round out SOUTHERN DARKNESS, until we get the ultimate show of southern metal/rock love — a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover — “Needle And The Spoon.” Oh hell yes! Me, I’m partial to covers, so I was very pleased with this. So, my darlin’s, come join me south of the Mason-Dixon line and get your stoner metal on with SOUTHERN DARKNESS!
