-Kamelot North American Tour Announcements

[Note: Two very different press releases came out in rapid succession. We’re presenting both here, to provide the complete picture. – Tim]

Kamelot Singer Falls Ill, North American Tour To Go On

The following statement was just made by the band:

“Hello Kamelot Nation,

“The band and crew are all here in Tampa rehearsing for the tour — Visas have been cleared and the guys are in good spirits and ready to party with all of you. However, during rehearsals, Roy became severely ill. Due to this, as yet undiagnosed, illness, Roy reluctantly has been forced to head back home to Norway. He is currently under his physician’s care, but unfortunately these circumstances will prevent him from joining us on the North American concert tour. Of course, we want Roy to take care of his health as priority one for now and for the future.

“After much consideration on how to proceed, all of us in Kamelot feel strongly about keeping our commitment to our fans, promoters, and support bands on this tour! We are all ready and excited about playing these shows, we have flown in people from around the world to be apart of it and it has been in the works over a year! Therefore, we are working diligently with a fantastic singer willing to step in at the eleventh hour in order to make this tour a reality — our good friend Michael [Ericksen] from Circus Maximus (Norway) has agreed to fill in for Roy! And we are excited to announce a special guest: Swedish vocalist Elize Ryd from Amaranthe will be joining the band on the North American Tour. She will also be part of the VIP meet and greet! Elize toured with us on our Summer Pandemonium Tour and also the European tour earlier this Spring.

“Also as a special thank you to our North American fans, our friends at ESP guitars have donated a beautiful ESP guitar which will be signed by Thomas Youngblood and given away at the end of our North American tour — this contest is open only to North American tour concert goers. Fans can enter for a chance to win this exclusive item by signing up in the designated area at each show! More surprises are in store at many shows including special guest appearances and more.”

Roy especially would like to add:

“I am terribly sorry that I cannot do this upcoming tour in North America this fall. We have our most fantastic album ever coming out in September, and the timing could have been better I guess. The band has my full and unconditional blessing to go out there and kick ass regardless, and I feel we have found a good replacement in Michael. He is a very good singer and long time friend. Be good to him! Hope to see you soon!

“All the best from Roy Khan.”

Michael states:

“Roy and I go way back, so when he called and asked me to help him and the rest of Kamelot to do their long planned USA tour, I told him, ‘Sure bro, I am there for you.’

“It will be big shoes to fill, but in his honor I will do my best to give the Kamelot fans a show they have long awaited. So grab your earplugs and come join the party!”

“We cannot thank you enough for your tremendous support over the years, and look forward to being out to meet more of you on the road! Please join us in wishing Roy a speedy recovery, and swift return to us!”

Kamelot will release POETRY FOR THE POISONED on September 10th in Europe. September 14th, 2010 in North America.

Kamelot will embark on its first North American tour in two years starting September 8th. Support on the trek will come from Leaves’ Eyes and Blackguard.

Kamelot Postpone Full North American Tour

“Hi Kamelot Nation.

“As many of you know, Roy has fallen ill and could not make the North American tour.

“We have been rehearsing like madmen here in Tampa — the band is tighter than ever and Michael from Circus Maximus is truly an amazing singer; if there is one male vocalist in this world who is on par with Roy, it is Michael! However, after today’s rehearsal, we all decided that we do not feel right about doing the North American tour as anything less than a 100% Kamelot Experience. We appreciate that many fans have waited more than 2 years for new material and to see us perform together. Our new album, POETRY FOR THE POISONED represents a labor of love from us, and to present it at anything less than full strength seems a disservice to all involved.

“Though we will suffer financial losses on this late hour cancellation, we still feel it’s the right decision for us as a band to make — we regret disappointing all those who worked so hard to shape this tour, and especially those fans who were still so willing to come through and support us despite Roy’s absence. We are humbled by that type of support, and we sincerely hope that our return in full form Kamelot strength will be more reward for your unwavering loyalty! We will reschedule all shows in the near future, once Roy is able to return. To thank Michael for his effort, the band will still appear at the sold-out Progpower Festival, as a one off show with him and many special guest singers from the festival. Again, we want to thank all of you for your amazing support!!

“Best regards, Kamelot Members.”

Please don’t forget that Kamelot’s new album POETRY FOR THE POISONED comes out September 14th, 2010.

-Spock’s Beard Update

[Note: This is a combination of two separate press releases. – Tim]

‘X’ Marks The Spot For New Release From Prog Rockers Spock’s Beard

NEW YORK — Acclaimed progressive rock band Spock’s Beard will release its tenth studio album, the aptly titled X, on September 28 via Mascot Records.

Over the past 17 years, Spock’s Beard has established itself as the crème de la crème of modern progressive rock. But Spock’s Beard is not simply a musician’s band; the group has also mastered the art of penning catchy, harmony-driven songs that will appeal to any fan of well-written pop songs.

The music of Spock’s Beard is a reflection of their varied influences, which include classical, pop, rock, jazz and jazz fusion, and R&B, while their intricate multi-part vocal harmonies and use of counterpoint add a whole other dimension.

Since Spock’s Beard began playing together in the early ’90s, not only have musical phases come and gone, but a whole new model of recording and selling music has taken shape. There were a lot of “firsts” for the group on X.

“We were never all in the same room at the same time, from the song writing stage all the way through mixing and mastering,” said bassist Dave Meros. “We have never done that before. One might think that would work against us, but apparently it had a positive effect in this case.”

The quartet’s dedicated fanbase can take partial credit for X. After coming to the end of their previous record deal, Spock’s Beard opted to take a decidedly modern approach to financing a new record. The group raised funds for recording by taking pre-sale orders for X. A privately released Limited Edition version of X was first issued and the record has since been licensed for release in America through Mascot Records.

Early reviews of X have hailed the release as one of — if not THE — finest release from Spock’s Beard. But pressed to explain how X differs from previous albums, Meros takes a humble and humorous observation:

“From what the critics have been saying, we wrote good songs this time, as opposed to the last CD which was super lame in their opinion. So in retrospect, I guess writing good songs may have been a good idea. We do that on purpose you know… sometimes we decide to be good and other times we choose to be super lame. We could be good all the time if we wanted, but what fun would that be? People would just love us and buy our CDs by the millions and we’d make loads of money. Who wants that? BORING!”

Mascot Records is an independent record company based in The Netherlands that specializes in guitar music, from metal to instrumental guitar, hard rock, prog rock and (guitar) fusion.

Spock’s Beard Makes Rare North American Live Appearance

NEW YORK — Acclaimed progressive rock band Spock’s Beard will play its one and only American show at the Downey Civic Theater in Downey, Calif., on Sunday, September 12.

Despite being a world-renowned recording act and touring act, Spock’s Beard rarely plays in America due to prohibitive touring costs. Spock’s Beard is booked for a European tour during the last two weeks in September, which made this one-off show possible.

“Since we’ll all be in L.A. at the same time doing rehearsals for the Europe tour anyway, we thought we’d try to book one L.A. date right before we left,” said Dave Meros, bassist for the band.

Spock’s Beard will release its tenth album, X, on September 28 on Music Theories Recordings, a subsidiary of Mascot Records. X has received rave reviews and will be the focus of the live show. “We’ll be doing the whole X CD plus some selected oldies to round out the set,” Meros said.

Tickets are available at http://www.calprog.com/ . Credit card and PayPal are accepted. The cost is $55 for a reserved seat.

Johnny Sandin Set To Leave Seventh Wonder

The band have also announced drummer Johnny Sandin will be leaving the band and have released the following announcements.

Below is a message from Johnny in connection to him announcing his departure from the band. Please note that this will have no effect on already scheduled gigs, in which Johnny is 100% devoted to participating.

“Hello fans and friends!!

“After more than 10 years of touring, recording, tons of laughter and a few tears I have decided to leave Seventh Wonder and take a break from music indefinitely.

“The last few years have been hectic and filled with really cool events. The Italy-tour which was put together by the band’s best friends Max, Romano and Manuel. The Sweden Rock gig is also one of the memories I will never let go of. Not to mention the upcoming ProgPower USA gig which is a dream for all of us. I view the release of the fourth SW album and the gigs to follow as a really good finish for me in the band!! Now I will get a chance to say goodbye to fans and friends when we are out playing.

“It is damned hard (although mostly fun) to put your entire soul into Seventh Wonder and at the same time work full time and also try to be a good father of four (soon five) and an equally good fiancé. It may sound selfish but I am doing this entirely for me. The more time I devote to the band, the more I lose time with my family. It is not worth that effort any more. I must make different prioritizations right now but at the same time nothing is ever really etched in stone. Who knows, in five years time I may have the drive once more. We will see what happens.

“I have had the honor of playing with the finest musicians I have ever met. They have not only been there for me as band members but also as my best friends and I know that they will always be there for me.

“Thank you to fans, friends and the band for 10 wonderful years.

“Johnny Sandin”

The band’s response:

“We are all very saddened by Johnny’s decision. We have lived with Johnny in one of the most important aspects of our lives for many years, some of us for over 10 years. At the same time we feel the utmost respect for Johnny’s decision which we believe to be a correct one for him. Since the first trembling steps of the entity that came to be Seventh Wonder, Johnny has been an integral part of the sound that is Seventh Wonder. Johnny co-wrote a lot of the earlier material and his rhythmic patterns, thunderous fills and poly-rhythmic excursions that he contributes to the music have challenged fans as well as his band members throughout this incredible journey. Johnny is the craziest man alive and has given many thousand laughs and hilarious moments to everyone around him.

“As you can understand it is very hard for us to think of Seventh Wonder without Johnny, but at the same time we are all, including Johnny, fully committed to carry on and keep doing what we have come to love and hold so dear over the years. This certainly ends one chapter in the Seventh Wonder book of history, let us together turn the page and see what the future holds as we let Johnny go towards other challenges.

“We love you Johnny and we wouldn’t have become who we are with out you!

“This does not affect already booked gigs. All scheduled gigs will be performed with Johnny at the helm, and 100% devoted to the task!”

Seventh Wonder Is Looking For A New Drummer

We envision that any applicant is a drummer with a well enough developed technical proficiency to be able to play through just about any song from our back catalogue. This should also work in a live setting with a metronome in a reasonably relaxed and steady manner. You who apply for the position should have a passion for the music we create and the genre in which we are active. The ability and will to sing back-up vocals during live sets is a plus. The band is active in Stockholm and that is also where the studio is — a fact to be considered by all applicants. Previous live show experience is a plus, a drum set of your own is a must.

To apply:

1) Record a video of reasonable quality of yourself playing two Seventh Wonder songs from WAITING IN THE WINGS and/or MERCY FALLS

2) Record a video of yourself playing anything else that you feel shows your drumming and your skills in a good way

3) Describe yourself, your musical background and activities, life situation and visions. You may either write this in the e-mail itself or in a file that you attach.

4) Send links to videos (for either download or streaming) and text according to bullet no. 3 above to: drummer@seventhwonder.nu

5) You do not have to be Johnny — be yourself

Thank You!

//Seventh Wonder

MindSplit are a new band yet one with years of experience behind its individual members. With a style planted somewhere between straight metal, progressive metal and classic rock the band deliver a truly epic tale with their debut album CHARMED HUMAN ART OF SIGNIFICANCE which is set for release on September 17th, 2010 on Lion Music.

Featuring veterans of the Scandinavian metal scene in guitarist Matthias Holm and vocalist H.B. Anderson, the pair began writing and recording together again in their spare time c.2003 once again after the duo had worked together in the late ’80s with The ‘n’ Sin. When the music was taking shape bassist Conny Payne (Madison) joined along with highly respect sessions musicians — drummer Jon Skäre and keyboardist Jonas Lidström. This new collaboration turned into a whole different ballgame though when H.B. found his great old, old grandfather Xerxes Anderson’s Artificial Universe (a.k.a. Prof. Xandau 1807 ~ 1851) notes from his therapy sessions.

Prof. Xandau was a much respected therapist during the first half of 19th century and had his sessions all over the world based in both Europe and the U.S. These notes are the solid ground to this project and are used to tell a true story about psychological thoughts and human behaviours. H.B. Anderson comments, “The memory notes declare what’s going on in the human mind in different situations making for compelling listening, although as there are no names involved so it’s totally anonymous. It’s fantastic literature and breathtaking reading, the human brain is very complex and odd. You can say it sure lives its own life.”

This inspired lyrical setting led to the music of what would become C.H.A.O.S. taking on its own personality. This story line is set to a musically accomplished and captivating release which will draw the listener in from the first listen. Musically the album is big, powerful, dark yet with subtle light and a very impressive aura with a powerful production to suit the mood. This has been further extended by the promotional video for the song “NME – Myself & I” which has received positive reactions from YouTube viewers worldwide.

With CHARMED HUMAN ART OF SIGNIFICANCE MindSplit has produced a debut album of exceptionally high quality and one that will appeal to a wide range of metal lovers and those with an appetite for enthralling concept stories.

With their spectacular debut THE PATHWAY, Finnish progressive metal outfit Anthriel have produced an album which has all the potential to be hailed a classic and is guaranteed to fascinate metal fans worldwide.

Formed in 2004 by guitarist Timo Niemistö, keyboardist Antti Hakulinen and drummer Jari Kuokkanen the band went through a couple of lineup variations before finding bassist Klaus Wirzenius and ultimately released a three-track E.P. VISIONS OF INNER LIGHT AND DEEPER THOUGHTS in 2007 which won considerable praise on the underground metal circuit. Yet it was until the band found powerhouse vocalist Simo Silvan in 2008 that the bands sound became fully realised.

Anthriel — the Archangel of balance and harmony — is the perfect name for the band’s music. With a sound driven by big guitar riffs, deft keyboard touches, a rock solid articulate rhythm section and a healthy dose of expressive vocals high in melody built into intricate yet digestible arrangements this is metal that is easily appreciated on first listen — yet where further plays reveal numerous hidden depths that will keep the listener coming back for more. The quality of material would not be best represented with anything less than a superb production and this is exactly what the THE PATHWAY serves up being an impressive self production by Timo Niemistö and mix by Jussi Kulomaa at MSTR Studios.

On the band’s sound Simo Silvan comments, “We don’t want to go extremity with any style of music. There is a time for a head banging and time for musical landscaping. We try to keep our music as versatile we can. THE PATHWAY is a mixture of various different kind of music styles like heavy, pop, acoustic, orchestral and instrumental and symphonic metal. The music and lyrics were written hand in hand with the album theme.”

Thematically THE PATHWAY is a concept based on a sequence of individual songs and themes with inspiration coming from R.A. Salvatore’s Forgotten Realms: “The Dark Elf Trilogy.”

On the basic premise of THE PATHWAY Timo Niemistö comments, “THE PATHWAY is the story of a man who finds himself grown against his former principles and philosophy of life. He decides to leave his past behind and begin a journey to find his own personal promised land and balance. As the path gets rough good and evil starts to battle in his mind where the reality and fantasy gets mixed. He puts the blame to the Gods for playing with his life and turns his adversities to the divine entertainment with consequences that ultimately lead to the discovery of perfect harmony from within his own soul.”

This compelling story is a captivating lyrical theme for the first class musicianship on offer all of which comes together to make Anthriel – THE PATHWAY a serious contender for best newcomers in progressive metal in 2010.

However, YOSO is much more than a combination of two classic rock groups. The band’s debut album ELEMENTS will debut this Fall in the USA on Frontiers Records. This long awaited release comes with a bonus live CD where the band plays some old and new classics. Two Side Moon Promotions are very excited to welcome back to the party Sweden’s Flag With Arthur Offen.

Please find below the text info for the AWESOME new album PERIHELION.

Band: Flag With Arthur Offen
Label: Arthur Offen Music
Street Date: January 1, 2010
Genre: Progressive Rock

Arthur Offen is a progressive rock song writer and artist with a special heritage and a very definite set of influences. His distinct outlook on how he sets his poetry and music in motion gives him an overall sound that can only be described as a style apart. Though his tuneful stories are at once completely original in their own right, Arthur’s musical tapestry clearly shows his upbringing amongst the giants of classic American and English rock of the late sixties and the explosive English art rock movement of the seventies.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Arthur came into his early teens with the British invasion headed by The Beatles on one hand and the civil rights movement and American rhythm and blues blowing up sky high on the other. Strong influences no doubt. Already playing piano and singing from an early age as one three very music driven siblings and his mother a pianist as well, being in the music world became the center of his life as the sixties progressed ever onward.

As the seventies and Art school took off he was drawn into an evening job at a local recording studio. There he was able to cut his teeth on the entire recording process at close range aided by guitarist Rick Hinkle a friend from his high school days. With the help of drummer extraordinaire and resident engineer Rick Brown and superb studio bassist Tom Walker Air Raid consumed Arthur’s artistic devotion and development through the seventies. Great English acts such as Yes and ELP were also an enormous motivating factor as Air Raid grew into a formidable recording act. The AIR RAID album (1980) produced by Eddie Kramer is now considered one of the sleeper classics of early ’80s progressive rock and still continues to sell today at Arthur’s site have gained fans in Europe and Asia.

With Arthur there was never a time when song writing and creating visual art weren’t happening side by side. Throughout the the ’80s, whether he was living in Scandinavia playing hotels or working as a studio musician in the US, the writing process was always presenting him with some new vista. Whether it involved the pageantry of history or a setting in the depths of outer space, the characters that inhabited these tales always had something amazing to say about what they did or how they felt. Further on into the ’90s settling into life in Boston the songs began to emerge as song books. It then makes perfect sense that Arthur would begin recording what eventually became an epic song cycle there in the studio where he worked that would culminate in the three album triptych under the moniker of Flag. The Flag albums represent an enduring accomplishment for Arthur at the present and should allow him the opportunity to perform this music past and present for his many fans around the world.

Band Lineup:

Two Side Moon Promotions are very excited to welcome to the party Australia’s Dark Synergy.

Please find below the text info for the AWESOME new album E.P. YOU ARE THE KILLER.

Band: Dark Synergy
Street Date: June 2009
Genre: “Cyber-Goth” – Rock/Metal/Punk/Acoustic

Dark Synergy was formed in April 2007 by guitarist/songwriter/producer Col Brown with female vocalist, Nellie Mokbel. During 2007 Col invited the vocalist to participate in an audition for a lead singer. Col was very impressed by her vocals and genuine passion for his music. The natural choice for Col was to make Nellie his lead singer, bringing with her a unique vocal styling to his music.

Nellie posed the question of a band name — Col suggested Dark Synergy, after the song “Dark Synergy” written by him in 2006. Nellie liked the name and believed in it. As she put it, “I like it, and it says a lot!” Thus, Dark Synergy was born. Dark Synergy expands the limits of Rock by blending both metal and heavy rock as well as goth and sc-fi influences into a unique style, described by Col as “Cyber-Goth.” Nellie’s passionate, yet delicate and soulful voice is the icing on the cake. Col’s trademark heavy metal riffs, dark left of center, sci-fi, minimalist lyrics, and searing lead guitar solos complete the musical package.

The Dark Synergy E.P. titled YOU ARE THE KILLER, released independently June 2009 on Dark Synergy Records (DSR) features Simone White (ex. Michael Franti – DISPOSABLE HEROES OF HIP HOPRISY) on drums, as well as Stuart J. Spaans on fretless and standard electric bass. YOU ARE THE KILLER is carefully produced, arranged and timed and has won over both, national and international fans.

The title track from the E.P., “You Are The Killer” was in rotation on radarradio.com.au, Australia Top 50 for four months and won Ugly Phil’s unsigned band competition December 2, 2009 on Triple M FM Australia. Both the tracks “You Are The Killer” and “No Illusions” have been played on internet radio stations in the USA, and “No Illusions” was included on the USA Gothic compilation CD THE FUNERAL VOL. 4.

With a rapidly growing fan base in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, Dark Synergy is looking to record their highly anticipated debut album.

Nellie Mokbel

Nellie Mokbel was born in 1984 and grew up in Sydney, Australia. From a very young age, Nellie had an innate passion for music. Her many and diverse influences include Justin Hawkins, Natalie Imbruglia, Gwen Stefani, Dale Bozzio, and Tarja Turunen.

Nellie’s passion for music led her to join the choir in primary school and participate in solo performances in church at the impressionable age of 12. She was chosen to be the lead singer of the high school band. Naturally, Nellie chose music studies in high school where she further honed in on her musical talent and was encouraged to emphasise her amazing vocal talents.

Soon thereafter, Nellie continued her vocal development through professional vocal training and also began to pursue her interest in song writing. Her lyrical repertoire provided the bases for two impressive demos created between 2000 and 2003.

Col Brown

Col Brown was born in Liverpool, England and grew up in Sydney, Australia. Col began playing guitar at age 20 after being highly influenced by such artists as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Gilmour, Black Sabbath, David Bowie and especially Eric Clapton. Col met Eric after a concert in Sydney in 1990 and was so inspired that he began teaching himself guitar. After pursuing Mining Engineering and graduating with Honors, Col turned his full attention to the Music.

Col has been writing and refining his music for several years. He has developed a unique style of songwriting and production, as well as an enviable repertoire of three albums of original material in produced demo format.

Having demonstrated the innate talent to teach himself guitar, Col enjoyed numerous opportunities to play lead guitar and perform locally as a member of the Cover Band The Scam, in Adelaide, South Australia. The Scam received radio promotion on the Triple M radio network and opened for Appetite For Destruction (Guns N’ Roses Tribute Show) to a packed to capacity house at The Venue in Adelaide.

Band Lineup:
Col Brown – Guitars/songwriting/production
Nellie Mokbel – Lead Vocals
Simone White – Drums
Stuart J. Spaans – Bass guitars

In the metal world, it’s not unusual to hear of revolving-door lineup changes, haphazard E.P.s, L.P.s and overall releases, and Armagedda is no exception. Going under the moniker Volkermord (and no, it is not the German word for “genocide,” but in fact stands for nothing, according to the band) the band has been around since 1999, and split up — indefinitely — in 2004. Although defunct as a band, they’ve released a four-track E.P., I AM, from beyond the grave, in ironic black metal spirit. While these songs were never released, until now, the song “I Am” was unleashed unto the world during the band’s 2002 tour. Immediately upon listening to I AM, I was transported back to the era of old school black metal. I cannot put enough emphasis on adjectives like “old school” and “traditional.” It’s got the low quality production, where everything is muted. If you stretch your imagination, you may find yourself in an emotional abyss, somewhere dark and sorrowful. This is an album strictly for old school black metal disciples. Songs like “De Vanhelgade” keeps the guitars at a catchy, consistent pace, the drumming thrashing away, and the vocals growling and snarling with bone-cracking evil. “I Am” channels a grey and dreary pathos, and the agonizing vocals pierce at the heart of it all. If you like the more modern, Dimmu Borgir-esque style, you’re going to be disappointed in this, because it lacks the grandeur of what has now become the norm in black metal. By all means, if you’re into old school black metal, proudly banging your corpse-paint caked head, and have been yearning for something new to feast on, then your prayers to Satan have been answered with I AM. Enjoy.

“Me, I feed the machinery of death. If that makes me evil, then so be it…” says a dark and deep voice. “Spend any amount of time around people and you get your heart broken,” he continues as the guitars slither in. “Treachery, hypocrisy, promise of love. Look at the mouth of a person and you find lies,” our narrator warns, and then the drumming flutters in, and our speaker begins to get drown out. In a few seconds we’re in the midst of a death metal song. Yes, you get all of that in a 1:42 minute song — the catalyst that fuels the rest an epic, symphonic black metal/melodic death metal album. Now, without further ado, let me introduce you to the band. They are The Breathing Process, and ODYSSEY: (UN)DEAD is their second album. “Grimoire” wastes no time in turning up the heat and laying siege to your ears. The drumming is off-the-walls mad, and the shrieking vocals pierces you to your very soul. The guitar work is so hauntingly melodic, it ossifies the song into the beast that it is. Ah, and what’s that I hear under all the grandiose insanity? Yes, it’s a piano! A big, goofy smile suddenly lit up on my face. It is woven into the song so intermittently, and at just the right times, as to give the song something truly dazzling. “Leveller” again teases the audience with more piano pieces flying in and flying out as quickly as they came. The vocals are on par with what we might expect of death metal or black metal. But alas, The Breathing Process is not limited to just one vocalist — they are an amalgamation of three vocalists, one of them female, making it even more impressive. The song ends on a creepy note, with what sounds like bats screeching maliciously in a cave in some forbidden faraway land. With “Vultures” we’re taken on a very melodic journey. It is also with this song where we hear softer vocals alternating with the rough-and-tough death metal style that we’ve seen so far on the earlier tracks. It seems like this song is going to be a slower one (slower, you realize, for death/black metal), but that is far from the case. The drumming summons so much gusto as to completely blow you away. In “Pantheon Unravelling” the synthetic sounds of the keyboard make for an almost techno style sound which you may think wouldn’t work, but it actually does. The song overall is a killer, truly something black metallers will nod their corpse-painted heads in approval of. “Starless: Eternal” is strictly instrumental and segues neatly into “Odyssey: (Un)Dead.” The keys make for an enchanting beautiful beginning, and this theme stays with the whole song. We even get a bit of a duet going when we hear growling death metal sung alongside a lower toned female vocal style. The Breathing Process cites Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, and Emperor as primary influences. You can sense the feel of said influences on certain songs throughout the album, but I must say, The Breathing Process honestly makes their music their own. This album is also a concept album, as explained by the band in an interview. It’s based on a man who has been ostracized, who travels through diverse and often harsh environments such as deserts, oceans, and glaciers. The songs attempt to create the atmosphere as the character intrepidly battles, “isolation, endurance and death.” As you can tell by now, there is a lot going on with this album, both lyrically and instrumentally, and I for one, say bravo.

PLACE OF SKULLS – AS A DOG RETURNS (C+) Giddy Up Records/Sony Red, 2010

“As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly” — Proverbs 26: 11. I never thought I’d start off a review with a quote from the Bible, but it seemed appropriate given the Christ-loving nature of this band. Even the band’s name, Place Of Skulls is a biblical reference to Golgotha (the site outside of ancient Jerusalem’s walls where Jesus is alleged to have been crucified). Place Of Skulls overtly avows their Christian faith invariably throughout AS A DOG RETURNS. This is their third album, following a four-year hiatus from their sophomore release THE BLACK IS NEVER FAR. They’ve been on the scene for much longer than that, vocalist/guitarist Victor Griffin and bassist Lee Abney were previously involved in bands Pentagram and Death Row. So, the addition of drummer Tim Tomaselli rounds out the current lineup for Place Of Skulls. They’ve placed themselves under the enveloping umbrella of doom metal, but also claim territory under blues and “down-tempo.” I must agree with that, because while listening to AS A DOG RETURNS, it only vaguely feels like the doom metal most metalheads are accustomed to. The album is punctuated by bluesy riffs. The singing is reminiscent of early metal singers, because it is not heavy, not even raspy or guttural; it’s fairly clean, making the lyrics easily heard. And lyrically, it only somewhat stays within the parameters of the doom tradition, due to pensive and melancholy moments. Even as the band states, they “lyrically reflect upon their spiritual beliefs, faith, God, politics, and the search for peace.” They’re the type that would be proud to go by the appellation of a Jesus Freak, or being affiliated with other Christian bands. We’re welcomed into AS A DOG RETURNS with “The Maker” which is a jolt of downcast rock. The song flirts with thrash, but sticks to the doom-rock hybrid it claims to be. “Breath Of Life” exudes sorrow from the moment it begins. Griffin cries, “Tossed by the waves, am I sinking?… Without you, the tides of hope have broken…” The song cascades into a chasm of despair. Of course the song is sprinkled with religious wording referencing prayer, salvation, and the Holy Spirit. All of this, and then a poignant guitar solo. “Though He Slay Me” almost sounds like a prayer, with lyrics begging, “Jesus, will you teach me to deny myself? My flesh is weak, my soul is frail, but in my weakness, your love never fails.” The song emits a morose atmosphere and our reflective singer ponders the omnipotence of his favorite deity. Then we’re off to “Psalm.” Sigh. Another song with heavy religious overtones. The song is engraved with what sounds like a tribal drum, which meanders through most of its first half. When those drums comes to a cessation, the song picks up a heavier vibe. “Dayspring” is the longest, running nearly 10 minutes. “Timeless Hearts” adds a rustic charm — a harmonica? But for the most part it’s jamming, something rockers can get excited about. “Desperation” is yet another woeful rumination. “Do you ever think it’s useless? Do you ever feel like letting go?… Tell me why these things are still the same. Tell me why no one can feel, learn from mistakes.” “As A Dog Returns” is what brings the album to a close. It’s not as gloomy as some of the other songs, and it even boasts an attention-grabbing guitar solo. If you can stomach the maudlin praises to the Almighty, or have the ability to tune it out and focus strictly on the instrumentation, then it’s a decent album. If you’re a Slayer fan, then you’ll find Place Of Skulls to be anathema to your blasphemous tastes. That’s honestly my biggest gripe, and I’m sure it is what will turn off others as well, especially if they’re marketing themselves to a genre whose followers are generally gluttonous for gore, war, and annihilation. On the other hand, if you like Christian metal then this will be music to your sinless ears.

VALDUR – RAVEN GOD AMONGST US (B) Bloody Mountain Records, 2010

They hail from the frigidly icy, dismally dark mountains, blazoning black metal as their emblem. Sounds like a typical European black metal band, right? WRONG! Valdur resides in the mountains alright, but in California’s eastern Sierras. RAVEN GOD AMONGST US is Valdur’s second release, and it proves that they are still on the prowl, bloodthirsty for the next conquest. What’s even more impressive is that Valdur is very DYI, showing steadfast determination to make it to the top. RAVEN GOD AMOGNST US was not only self-financed, but released by drummer Sxuperion’s very own label, Bloody Mountain Records. And that is not the aberration — they are just as melodic as they are brutal, a challenging dichotomy. But they succeed in making it euphonic, plunging down to their blackened death metal roots, vivifying them to make for a truly wicked album. The thirty second intro cackles and crashes you into “Wound Fires In The Afterlife,” galvanizing the album into monstrous action. Vocalist Thor epitomizes the raspy and bestial death growls, while the guitars and drums create a hauntingly infernal atmosphere. “Great Abyss Unfold” starts as if the sound is coming from somewhere distant. Then at terrifying speeds they rush up to, getting louder and louder until they are frighteningly right in your face, utterly engulfing you, executing musical ferocity! The song never stops or slows down; it’s a barrage of tenacious tempos and guttural growls. It’s not until the end that evanescence creeps in and carries the sound away. Oh, but not for long. “Gravlagt I Morkets Natt!” brings with it a sinister aura. It’s not as melodic as the preceding tracks, but it keeps the consistent pattern of being fast. By the title’s name, you know that the song is in a foreign language. The album features some Norwegian lyrics, thanks to lead singer Thor’s Scandinavian heritage. But that’s about the only characteristic “European black metal” dose you get, along with “Med Fjell I Horisonten.” With “Past Of Wolves” we’re back to a melodic spirit, most notably the guitar work charging the way with memorable riffs. The vocals are recorded in quintessential black metal style — well, old school style, rather, so it does sound a tad muted. “Berserrker” marshals onward with the assault that is RAVEN GOD AMONST US. It’s a solid and strong offering, but it was hard to distinguish anything novel about it, compared to other tracks. The last two tracks left me feeling the same way: they’ve all got a demonic, dark quality, but we’ve already experienced this on earlier tracks. It’s an above-average album, but black metal fans are the ones who will get the most enjoyment out of it.

YEAR OF NO LIGHT – AUSSERWELT (B) Conspiracy Records, 2010

Imagine you’re rowing in a dilapidated wooden boat. The skies are ashen gray. Wispy, billowing clouds fluctuate, foreboding something sinister. Directly in front of you is a hauntingly beautiful island. The thick, ebony silhouettes of the dense forest arc around the bend of the island. A jagged, sable line guides your bleary eyes to a forbidding tunnel cutting through the trees. Pallid, gray waves lap at the island’s edges, slowly and sorrowfully. You draw nearer to this ghastly, yet enchanting island, mesmerized by it. Have I succeeded in drawing in a very vivid and palpable atmosphere for you? This is what Year Of No Light’s second full-length album AUSSERWELT does for listeners through their music. I was actually describing the ominously dark artwork for the album. Several sources acclaim the album to be very ambient, calling the music pieces “soundscapes.” As you might have guessed by now, this is a completely instrumental album. It’s hard to label the band or confine them to any one of metal’s bajillion sub-genres. Ones that I keep seeing coming up to describe them are post-rock, traditional drone metal, doom metal, black metal, hardcore, post-metal, and probably more. The album is delicately and intricately forged upon many layers. I can imagine zealous pedantry erupting over this album, analyzing every musical note, every instrument, etc. And there is room for this scrupulousness, because without vocals, there are no lyrics; there’s nothing that the album is clearly trying to convey. So, much is left to the listener’s imagination. The album is divided into four songs, and the first song is further split into two distinct songs, “Persephone I” and “Persephone II,” respectively. All of you Greek mythology scholars should recognize the name as being that of the Goddess of Spring — and unwilling wife of Lord Hades. So, that right there is ample enough to spark a storyline to go with the atmosphere. “Persephone I” is indeed the first track, and it serenades you with its lonesome song, playing distorted, down tuned guitar work. The drumming settles in and harmonically pummels away. You feel like you’re going on an odyssey, you’re not sure where, but the climate evokes despondence and hopelessness. Perhaps, this is reflective of Persephone: You’re imprisoned in the frightening and tortuous depths of Tartarus, far away from the viridian fields and kaleidoscopic flowers that brought you so much joy. As the song progresses, the sense of yearning is omnipresent, despite the bleakness. You really have to pay attention to all of the songs, and listen to them more than once for you to fully appreciate it. It took me until the third listen to pick up on some distant sounding chiming on “Persephone I.” There are also electronic keys at work on AUSSERWELT, but they’re not always conspicuous. To me, it just shows that the cohesion of the album is seamless, and truly a piece of art. “Persephone II” intrepidly soldiers onward. The atmosphere still feels cloudy and portentous. It’s the marching quality of the drumming that makes you feel like you’re on a mission. “Hierophante” is imbued with doom metal charm, crashing and thrashing drumming, and eerie, mutilated guitar riffs. The song dips into slower, surrealistic pieces which really make you stop and reflect on what exactly it is that you’re hearing. Is that the jingling of bells I hear, behind the guitars? The whole 13+ minute song remains cloaked in darkness. “Abbesse” is what guides our journey to an end. The sonorous drumming sounds almost rigid and gives a sense of dread. The repetitive clanking of the cymbals is only one of the many subtleties to be picked out on this track. By the time we reach the end, it is much quieter, a kind of sadness still pervades, perhaps signifying that the journey never ends. When the music stops, you feel like you’re still lost in AUSSERWELT. Even if instrumental albums aren’t normally your thing, I’d still recommend giving it a listen.
