-Y&T Update

[Note: This is from the band’s latest e-mail newsletter. – Tim]

Since Phil’s post on the forum last month announcing that he has cancer, he’s posted an updated message about his health and well-being:

He is reading (and re-reading) every single response. Please brighten Phil’s day and post a message to him there.

On With The Show

In July when doctors ordered Phil off the FACEMELTER tour and into the hospital, he asked the band to continue the tour for him. And so, to honor Phil’s wish, the band tapped bassist Brad Lang (Jet Red, War & Peace, Foreigner) to help out. The next morning, Brad flew out to jump onto the tour; he had learned 21 songs in 24 hours — along with Phil’s vocal harmonies! Phil and the band are so grateful to Brad for his enthusiasm, support, and graciousness to step in while Phil fights the battle. For Brad, subbing for Phil Kennemore and playing with Y&T is a dream come true.

We’d like to extend our thanks to you — the incredible Y&T fans — for so warmly welcoming Brad on this tour. Reports from every city continue to rave about Y&T’s stellar show. Thanks to Brad, the band can carry on — for Phil and for the fans. As Phil so brilliantly penned on the FACEMELTER CD, On With The Show…

Phil Kennemore Fund

The band recently started “The Phil Kennemore Fund” for people to make donations to help Phil with his enormous medical bills. Donations of any amount, regardless how small, are greatly appreciated.

-New Grave Digger And Iron Fire Albums On Napalm Records

Are you ready for some pure HEAVY METAL glory! Behold the gleaming, glorious new albums from true-metal mainstays Grave Digger and Iron Fire! Grave Digger’s THE CLANS WILL RISE AGAIN and Iron Fire’s METALMORPHOSIZED are both set for North American release on October 12th, 2010 — so scream for me, North America, and raise the banners high!!!

With the mere first notes of the introduction, fans of Grave Digger will unequivocally know they have returned to the Scottish Highlands! The majestic sound of bagpipes stylistically establishes the direction of the German power metal institution’s latest album. THE CLANS WILL RISE AGAIN is a formidable and compact work, in which no one song outdoes another. Yet tracks like “Paid In Blood,” “Hammer Of The Scots,” or “Rebels” will undoubtedly grab on to the most discerning metalhead with their unstoppable mix of heavy metal riffs, driving double bass and catchy choruses. Kilt-wearing fans will find “Highland Farewell” their personal favorite, as the bagpipe takes on a leading role and gives the track its unique flair. Grave Digger’s newest addition, guitarist Axel Ritt, rejuvenates the band revolving around legendary front man and scene grandee Chris Boltendahl, and provides them with a fresh and energy-laden springboard from which to launch their latest attack. Scotland provides Grave Digger with plenty of lyrical inspiration, ranging from its sheer mystique to its proud people. It also allows them to once again return to the glory days of TUNES OF WAR, an album that previously visited Scotland’s colorful history. THE CLANS WILL RISE AGAIN presents a band that has managed to mark their 30th anniversary with yet another musical milestone.

METALMORPHOSIZED marks the 10-year anniversary of Iron Fire’s crusade in the name of true metal. The Danish formation has not strayed from their steel-forging tradition, while delivering their latest collection of power metal hymns that will undoubtedly detonate like highly explosive dynamite in the ears of both avid headbangers and fans of the metallic art. Heavy guitar riffs, majestic melodies, and forward pressing drums build the foundation for mastermind and front man Martin Steene’s charismatic vocals. Steene even recruited former band members to celebrate this significant milestone with him. Each note, each riff, and each chorus echoes Iron Fire’s resolve and convincingly shows that this band is armed and ready to fight for their metal ideals. A power metal opus par excellence!

-Inner Wound Recordings / Ulterium Records Announces The Release Of SoulSpell Metal Opera’s LABYRINTH OF TRUTHS On October 18th, 2010!

The album features special guests as Jon Oliva [Jon Oliva’s Pain, ex. Savatage], Roland Grapow [Masterplan, ex. Helloween], Zak Stevens [Circle II Circle, ex. Savatage] and Germán Pascual [ex. Narnia].

SoulSpell Metal Opera is a Brazilian Heavy Metal project conceived by drummer Heleno Vale. Many singers play different characters in a story concerning the conflicts among human emotions in a way never broached before. These characters face situations of internal conflict as they are requested for making decisions which, without their knowledge, affect and change the course of the present, future, and even past of all the other characters. Although the story takes place in the present, many historic events are also tangled in it. SoulSpell’s story intends to make us wonder how a fifteen-year-old boy, a powerful evil dragon, or even a simple humble lumberjack, by simply living and believing, can interfere in the lives of all in every possible dimension.

After a successful reception, the project gained assistance from great world-wide names like Roland Grapow (ex. Helloween, Masterplan), Zak Stevens and Jon Oliva (ex. Savatage), Blaze Bayley (ex. Iron Maiden), Tim Ripper Owens (ex. Judas Priest, ex. Iced Earth) and some great Brazilian names like Edu Falaschi (Angra) and Nando Fernandes (Hangar).

THE LABYRINTH OF TRUTHS proves that Brazil has lots of talent, and the spirit of the project is something special for sure! Familiar voices like Jon Oliva and Zak Stevens mixed with exciting vocalists like Germán Pascual and Leandro Caçoilo creates a great diversity, and the term “Metal Opera” surely fits the album!

1. The New Math (What He Said)
2. OSI
3. When You’re Ready
4. Horseshoes And B-52’s
5. Head
6. Hello, Helicopter!
7. ShutDOWN
8. Dirt From A Holy Place
9. Memory Daydreams Lapses
10. Standby (Looks Like Rain)

*Limited Edition (CD above + extra CD with three more tracks and three videos)
1. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun (8:49)
2. New Mama (2:22)
3. The Thing That Never Was (17:21)

* “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” is a Pink Floyd cover performed by Kevin Moore and Mike Portnoy. “New Mama” is a Neil Young cover performed by Kevin Moore. “The Thing That Never Was” is the original “Looks Like Rain” demo performed by Jim Matheos and Mike Portnoy.

The Multimedia section is approximately 19 minutes long and includes a concept piece directed and edited by Kevin Moore for “Horseshoes And B-52’s” as well as two separate documentary style clips shot at Carriage House Studios during the recording of the album.

OSI (Office of Strategic Influence) is an American progressive experimental super-group formed by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos back in 2003 and features the talents of Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater). The band’s name refers to the short-lived U.S. government agency Office of Strategic Influence which was established shortly after 9/11 to manufacture and promote pro-U.S. propaganda in domestic and foreign media. OSI inked a deal with Metal Blade Records back in May and is currently working on their fourth album and Metal Blade debut, which will be out in 2011. The band gained a strong underground following through the release of their three full-length records and an E.P. Their 2009 album, BLOOD, includes guests Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). Past participants include Mike Portnoy on the first two albums, Sean Malone and Steven Wilson on the debut, and Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) on FREE.

OSI’s music can’t easily be pigeonholed and is a completely different animal when compared to its founders’ other projects. The music is a combination of dark rock choruses with atmospheric, often industrial keys and is an eclectic mix of both Moore’s and Matheos’ influences.

OFFICE OF STRATEGIC INFLUENCE will be released on Metal Blade Records the 24th/27th of September 2010!

-Keyboardist Lisa LaRue Enlists One Of 2010’s Best Startups For Assistance With 2KX Project

Native American Musician Offers Rewards For Fan Participation

MUSKOGEE, OK — Musician/keyboardist Lisa LaRue has enlisted Kickstarter — one of 2010’s Best Startup Companies (Billboard, August 21, 2010) — to aid with recruiting funding for her new musical recording project 2KX. LaRue is seeking $5,000 by November 10, 2010 for support with recording and marketing her upcoming project which she estimates will be released early in 2011. For information on pledging to this project, please visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/885666456/native-american-musician-creating-with-the-world-2 . Those who pledge to the project could qualify to receive a song written by LaRue for them or a loved one as well as numerous other rewards for their involvement.

LaRue recently spent time in Los Angeles recording the title track for the CD FAST AND BLUE with co-producer John Payne (Asia Featuring John Payne), Maxi Nil (Visions Of Atlantis), Steve Adams (ARZ), Mike Alvarez (Bass Clef Experiment), and Merrill Hale (ARZ). A song sample is available at http://www.reverbnation.com/lisalarue . Other musicians in the project include David Mark Pearce (Oliver Wakeman Band), Mitch Perry (Asia Featuring John Payne, Michael Schenker Group, Cher) along with LaRue on keyboards. Additional musicians to be announced.

Based in Northeastern Oklahoma and working for her tribe (United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma), Lisa LaRue is not only fulfilling her dreams but hoping to be an inspiration to other native entrepreneurs. While staying in her home community and doing important work for her tribe, she is recording a progressive rock album with musicians from around the world! Progressive rock has recently witnessed a resurgence across the world, particularly in the U.K., but as a Native American woman, Lisa has taken on a new challenge of working with musicians of different cultures and backgrounds to work in a unique way — each participant writes and records their own parts without any musical direction, but what comes from their heart. The combination of backgrounds, influences, demographics and talent is not only proof that music is the universal language, but that an indigenous woman can stay in her own tribal community and still work with the world and touch the world as well, in a way that is not stereotypical but uniting — while using modern technology to create the final product. One of the “hold-ups” to native people being successful is the lack of opportunities in the tribal community. But with the internet and other forms of technology, it is now possible.

“I’ve connected with fabulous musicians from other parts of the United States, Greece and the U.K., and we all share the common goal of creating great music, and have proven to ourselves that we write and play in spiritual harmony,” says LaRue. By allowing each musician the opportunity to add to the songs what comes from their hearts without any musical direction, the outcome will show that music IS, indeed, the Universal Language.

Even though technology is easily available, it costs money — not only for the small necessities like high-speed Internet, quality computers and software, but for the costs of professional mixing, mastering and final production. “Staying in my community and working for my tribe is my priority, but so is using the gift the Creator gave me — the ability to play what comes from my heart. And I want to show other Native artists that they can reach out to the world while staying an integral part of their community!”

To be a part of this project, have the satisfaction of making a dream come true though quality music that will last through the ages, and at the same time reap rewards for yourself, visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/885666456/native-american-musician-creating-with-the-world-2 .

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Update

TSM are thrilled to welcome to the party Right To Silence.

Please find below the text info for the new album BAD DREAMS.

Band Name: Right To Silence
Album Title: BAD DREAMS
Street Date: April 24, 2010
Genre: Metal
Recorded and mixed by Bobby Altvater (Affair, etc.)

Right To Silence is not the name of a campaign of an angry neighborhood against molesting sounds and noises but the name of a Metal “Supergroup.” “Supergroup” because of the high level of performance and technical skills the guys have. This formation exists since the beginning of 2007 and looks back to different band and music experiences of the single band members. The strange name Right To Silence was fixed after a long phase of planning and, as a matter of fact, in metaphor to the noise which Right To Silence produce.

The band simply tries to do their thing and to play their Metal Sound, which seems to succed because also an audience which is “not really” into Metal gets curious while listening to them!

The band is taking care expecially of the melody and the mood of their songs which makes them really interesting.

After recording a demo tape in 2008, Right To Silence spent a lot of time playing live acts as local support for Hate Squad, President Evil, Debauchery, Mando Diao, Agnostic Front, Comeback Kid, Gallows, and Danko Jones.

The north Italian aggressive Power Rock band finished to record and mix their first longplayer BAD DREAMS in December 2009 at the Sky Studio of Bobby Altvater in Munich, Germany. The Album is available in stores since June 2010 and online on iTunes, Amazon, CdBaby, Napster and other online stores!

Massive Sound, interesting arrangements and the crazy ideas of lead singer Simon Staffler make BAD DREAMS a really ambitious album. What genre do they play? No idea! The songs take influences by Trash, Hardcore, Blues, Rock, Metal, Metalcore, New Metal and other noise.

On stage the guys convince the audience with a powerful and hard Metal sound, which is underlined by screaming and clean singing, colorful solos and a little bit of etno-world-music (they have a guy who plays didgeridoo, yes man!).

A quintet full of performance, rhythm and power!

TSM are thrilled to welcome to the party Italian Hardcore Metallers Arcadia.

Please find below the text info for the new album ROY PHILIP NOHL.

Band Name: Arcadia
Label: Studio A
Street Date: April 2010
Genre: Hardcore

Arcadia first gathering happened in 1996, a normal day, after school in the drummer’s garage! After the first reharsing session, two years later, Arcadia recorded the very first demo tape (yes, the good old tapes…) called WAR OF SILENCE, making the first gigs in the area to promote it.

Back to ’99 the band recorded a three-track CD called TRUST with a new lineup and a new, more personal direction. This let Arcadia obtain a contract with No Brain Records, an Italian indie label that allowed the band to record the first official full-length, SYNTH.

The album was a mix of modern industrial metal, monolithic riffs and rough vocals; they promoted it live in the whole nation, also supporting known Italian bands like Extrema, Raw Power and Crackdown.

In 2002 Arcadia recorded the first version of NET REALM, out for EMI Distribution, making gigs, interviews and reviews for the major magazines in Europe.

Two years later the band had the opportunity to make some shows in America thanks to RG Promotionz which brought the band to play with some icons like Obituary, Testament, Body Count, Henry Rollins, supporting them in the Sun And Steel Fest Tour.

This experience was very important for the band, soon a decision was to be taken: who wants to be a musician in, all the others out.

So, after a break to reform a new and definitive lineup, the band entered the Nadir Studio in Genoa to record FRACTURE CONCRETE and moved to Los Angeles for one year and a half, playing more than 250 shows in the whole continent!!!

In 2007 the band got back to Europe as the will to play in new countries was always growing up.

As soon as Arcadia were back home, they started organizing their first European tour which brought them to play in U.K. and Eastern Europe for a couple of months.

After a gig in Prague the band was contacted by Valery Records, which offered a deal to record their forthcoming album COLD COLD BODIES; back from the tour the band stopped for a while for the recording sessions, and as soon as the record was out, Arcadia was again on the road in Italy, central and eastern Europe and Asia! While working on the new songs, the band found anyway the time to open for the Italian tour of Agnostic Front and to headline another European tour.

Now the latest album ROY PHILIP NOHL is out and the band is being reviewed by the best magazines in the world. A two weeks tour with Six Feet Under and Illdisposed is just over and Arcadia have just supported Napalm Death in their Italian tour… and what else? Ah yes, they are working on the new tour in November 2010 and on a couple of videos! So… stay tuned!!!

TSM are thrilled to welcome to the party South Africa’s Earl Grey & Croquet.

Please find below the text info for the new album FROM THE 21ST CENTURY.

Band: Earl Grey And Croquet
Label: Independent
Street Date: June 1, 2010
Genre: Rock

“Reviewing albums of South African bands normally ends with me deciding one of two things, the album either sucks and I mentally use it as a coaster — or — it is a great album.
FROM THE 21ST CENTURY is a great album.” – Joe Diedericks, Digital Life magazine

“FROM THE 21ST CENTURY is seven-track E.P. that showcases this band’s remarkable talent and unique brand of originality.” – Chase Richards, iMod

In June 2010, Earl Grey & Croquet will release their much anticipated album: FROM THE 21ST CENTURY. We are Earl Grey & Croquet — four young musicians and friends with a unique and original approach to music, song writing and performing.

When we began to understand the pure joy of playing music together as friends, it quickly became a way to vent feeling and emotion, that which is true, expressive and above all: exciting. Our music entertains and stimulates, taking audience’s on a trips of highs and lows, thrills and chills all with easy-to-listen-to, innovative music. Earl Grey & Croquet have a diverse following of fans of all cultures and ages who enjoy their unique sound and energetic stage presence.

Our diverse following must be because of our eclectic mix of varying musical influences: from old school legends like Neil Young, Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan to new age bands like Kings Of Leon, aKing, Counting Crows and The Killers. Earl Grey & Croquet’s style of music thus varies, incorporating folk with blues, alternative with psychedelic rock and other styles, all of which just seem to fit and sound right.

Over the years, our own compositions have become well known with hundreds of fans. That said, we also enjoy doing covers; songs like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird,” Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone,” and Kings Of Leon’s “King Of The Rodeo.”

Earl Grey & Croquet’s stage show is a professional act, led by energetic and lively Laurie Sloan, with the two brothers, Chris and Jonny Smith keeping the beat alive and moving. Dan “the man” Millar on bass, keeps the songs grounded with his steady and groovy riffs. As musicians, but more-so as friends, we live, play and enjoy our music.

Earl Grey & Croquet’s music is of a kind to be shared and enjoyed. After all, in its essence, at its core, it’s just good people playing good songs — with a little intensity and emotion thrown in too. Earl Grey & Croquet are officially endorsed by Casio and Dawson Eco Plectrums.

We pride ourselves in being unique and letting people enjoy us for who we are.

-Scythia Announce “Exiled Across Canada” Tour Dates + Free Download

Vancouver progressive folk metal band Scythia have announced their “Exiled Across Canada” tour dates set to kick off in Victoria, BC on Sept 24th. The six man & woman contingent will be echoing their thundering tunes over the following six weeks across Canada.

Blending epic storytelling with modern progressive metal to create an interesting dynamic that includes an oboe of death and classical violin. Scythia’s ancient and medieval influenced melodies will bring the past back to the present as they ready to brandish their swords and prepare for tour in support of their upcoming release …OF WAR produced by Shaun Thingvold who has engineered on projects with SYL, Fear Factory, Darkest Hour and many more.

“Folk music is definitely more ambient, pure, and beautiful. Metal is intense, raunchy, and driving. The use of both in songs, combined with dynamic contouring, has the ability to take the listener on the kind of journey that rises to mountain peaks and descends into valleys, in a sonic sort of way,” comments vocalist / guitarist Dave Khan.

Formed in late 2008, Scythia is not your older brother’s metal band. Taking its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with a painting of Nordic/Russian warriors riding bears while brandishing swords, Scythia not only “gives the painting musical significance,” but it is also “the name of an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia.”

“Violins automatically make metal awesome, no matter what.” – Scott Alexander, Obsidian Fox Photography

“The ‘Epilogue,’ an appropriately galloping classical metal piece with a sweet violin and piano ending.” – Ravenheart Music (Review)

“The strong card of Scythia is the orchestration and the combination of progressive metal riffs with synths and violins in a very melodic folk result… the progressive guitars and violins are ‘married’ perfectly (my favorite parts from the band)… an epic power metal approach.” – Heavy Metal Cosmos

-Introducing… Hero In Error!

Hold Tight! PR are excited to introduce to you, one of the finest technically melodic metal bands to spring from The Emerald Isle in quite some time… Hero In Error!

Formed in Dublin, Ireland during the winter of 2008 and taking direct influence from the likes of Every Time I Die, The Acacia Strain and Sikth, the band offer up some killer technical hooks to match their straight-faced brutality.

Opting to work with the almost legendary pairing of Dan Weller and Justin Hill (ex-SikTh) on the recording of their debut E.P. (upon which Hill lays down guest vocals on “Under One Sky”) to capture a more distinct and mature sound, Hero In Error have set the benchmark high as they continue to strive beyond the “dime a dozen” nature of other bands currently saturating the scene.

Despite their musical career being in its infancy, Hero In Error’s hardworking attitude and tightly honed live show has made them a much talked about prospect, helping them to rack up some impressive support slots alongside the likes of Mastodon, Architects and Iwrestledabearonce along the way.

Heor In Error’s debut E.P., THE HIGH POINT OF NEW LOWS, will be released on October 4th, 2010.

-Viking Skull’s HEAVY METAL THUNDER To Be Released October 26

Restricted Release today confirms October 26 as the North American release date for HEAVY METAL THUNDER, a special reissue package from England’s Viking Skull. Re-mastered and featuring all new artwork, HEAVY METAL THUNDER combines the band’s popular debut album, BORN IN HELL, and the CHAPTER ONE E.P., both previously unavailable through proper American and Canadian retail outlets. The album also includes five bonus songs and will precede a new, still untitled E.P. planned for release in early 2011.

Viking Skull, featuring vocalist/guitarist Roddy Stone, guitarists Dom Wallace and Frank Regan, bassist Kevin Waldie, with sole-American drummer Jess Margera (CKY, The Company Band), found initial American interest when the song “Skull Heaven” appeared on volume one of Bam Margera’s Viva La Bands compilation series in 2005. A second song, “Blackened Sunrise” would follow on volume two in 2007. Early fans would have to wait until the winter of 2008, however, to witness their first Skull show; the band finally landing on U.S. shores to share the stage on a short east coast tour with Clutch.

Stone recalls, “our tour with Clutch was the first time for us playing the states. It quickly became quite clear to us that America loves big riffs through big amps and that’s what we’re about. No fancy hair cuts, eye liner, or spooky clothes, just balls out, meat and potatoes heavy rock. That tour was one of the best we’ve done in terms of crowd reaction, and on top of that we got to see Clutch every night.”

HEAVY METAL THUNDER comes nearly two years to the day after the release of DOOM, GLOOM, HEARTACHE & WHISKEY (Powerage); an album that was embraced by international media on its release in 2008. “Genuinely fantastic rock ‘n roll,” asserts Kerrang! “Whiskey-swigging, bar-room-brawling, southern-baked hard rock and metal,” said Blabbermouth. It was MetalSucks that most aptly described the band’s sound noting, “if you take a foundation built on Black Sabbath, add the support structure of Thin Lizzy, wall it up with a thick layer of Motorhead, and retrofit the whole package with the likes of Orange Goblin, this is the house Viking Skull has built.”

“We tend to think, if it ain’t broke don’t try and fix it,” notes Stone about the band’s straightforward heavy metal anthems. “We like to think back to the day when men were men, and amps where amps. The time when having a good riff/song was important and had nothing to do with posing, we’re a proper band with proper tunes..”

It was 2002 when assorted members of England’s Raging Speedhorn and crew faced the very sobering notion that their daily offering of free booze would dry up whilst not on tour. So for founding members Stone, Waldie, and Regan, the lure of a free pint was enough to encourage them to form a band. In quick time, Viking Skull was recording and enjoying non-stop touring (European runs with H.I.M., Dio, CKY and others) when one memorable evening things came to an abrupt halt. In what can only be recalled as a drop-down, all out battle (fueled by lots, and lots of absinthe unfortunately supplied by then simply friend Jess Margera) the ‘Skull’s outer edges fried and the Northamptonshire-based band broke up. Later finding out what had happened Margera offered up his services and within short time wounds healed and Viking Skull was back.

-Yaotl Mictlan Release Party To Feature Aztec Dancers, Chicano Artist Showcase

Extreme metal band Yaotl Mictlan will perform on Saturday, September 4 at Bar Deluxe (666 S. State Street, Salt Lake City) to celebrate the recent release of their latest album, DENTRO DEL MANTO GRIS DE CHAAC. The event will include a special showcase from Chicano artist Veronica Perez and feature traditional Aztec dancers.

Yaotl Mictlan was recently honored by the Boston Phoenix as one of the Best New Bands From America. The highly regarded weekly newspaper said, “with an aesthetic that merges brutal death metal, Mayan imagery, and an over-the-top stage show, they have concocted an angry brew of metallic cultural warfare. In a conservative place like Salt Lake City it makes the band’s heads-on-sticks live savagery all the more righteous and dangerous.” Metal Maniacs adds, “Yaotl Mictlan are ferocious… a seriously fresh and sophisticated take on a solid sound.”

Founded by brothers in 1998, Salt Lake City-based Yaotl Mictlan (meaning “warriors from the land of the dead”) unite metal and their native Mayan heritage. The band made its critical first impression on the ears of Brujeria vocalist Juan Brujo. So impressed Brujo later produced the band’s first demo, A BATALLA VAMOS. The new full-length DENTRO DEL MANTO GRIS DE CHAAC is the band’s first with new label Candlelight Records. It follows their 2006 debut, GUERREROS DE LA TIERRA DE LOS MUERTOS (American Line Productions).

“Quality epic metal is quite an effort to get right and this band have done a superb job with this release.” — BlogCritics

“…the overall tone is oppressively heavy and where the shifts between ambient and crushing were predictable and unsatisfying on AND WE WEPT THE BLACK OCEAN WITHIN, here they’re blended together for a new brand of musical heft that sets A Storm Of Light apart from generic b-list post-metallers and shows the true potential of the band.” — The Obelisk

We already have some killer plans for the future. And all I can say at this point is that we’ll be moving forward with full force and without mercy.

“Those of you who’ve followed Dark Funeral since the beginning in 1993, surely know that this is not the first time we’ve undergone a major lineup change. And whatever some people may have thought or whined about, no one can deny the fact that I/we’ve always succeeded in recruiting new and amazing musicians to move forward and reach new heights with the band. There is absolutely no doubt in our mind that this will again be the case.

“On August 21st we performed our last show with Emperor Magus Caligula at the Summer Breeze Festival in Germany. Since this was a very special performance in many ways, we not only put on our biggest pyro show ever, we also captured this gig with 10 cameras (including one crane). So you can be sure to expect a DVD release from this killer show in the near future. More info regarding the DVD will come in due time…

“Since parting ways with E.M. Caligula, it come as no surprise to the rest of us, that B-Force would follow the same path and throw in his towel too. So I wish to thank him for the six fantastic years he’d been with us on bass. It’s been a pleasure indeed working together.

“Said B-Force of his decision to leave the band: ‘After six awesome and crazy years with Dark Funeral, I have decided to leave the band. It’s my own decision to leave one of the best bands/friends in the world, but I feel that I need to move forward in life and do something else music-wise. There are absolutely NO hard feelings between Dark Funeral and myself. We are and will continue to be good friends! I want to thank the band and all the fans all over the world. You kick ass everywhere I’ve been playing with the band. I thank you all. May the dark forces be with you.’

“We have already found a new and totally amazing bassist; a bassist who lives and breathes Dark Funeral in its purest form. And we couldn’t be more honored to have him onboard. We will however wait until everything is settled before we present him to all of you, so please be patient.

“Since announcing the departure of Caligula, we’ve been overwhelmed with vocal applicants. Among them are a couple of very strong candidates. However, since we feel no hurry to fill the position, we’ll continue the search to make sure that when we eventually hire someone, it be someone who totally blows away everything in his path.

“If you do believe that you have what it takes for the job, we are still accepting vocal applications. Send us a brief introduction and some AUDIO/VIDEO files/links of your vocal performance to: vocalist@darkfuneral.se.

“From now until we have found and installed a new vocalist, we will keep ourselves busy rehearsing and working on material for a new full-length. Rest assured that as soon as the new lineup is complete, we’ll continue to tour the world in usual Dark Funeral manner. More news to come… — Lord Ahriman and Dark Funeral.”

-When I saw Y&T about a month ago, during the afternoon soundcheck I saw a dude wearing a “Valkyr” T-shirt, and he had his little long-haired son with him. The kid had drum sticks and was a Y&T fan, and got his picture taken with Dave Meniketti — very cool. A few days later I discovered my buddy Jeff saw Valkyr live, and the guy I saw in the T-shirt is the band’s guitarist, and the kid is indeed his son. Check out this Facebook link for a video of the 5-year-old playing live with his dad’s band. FIVE years old. Friggin’ amazing.

-I’m not sure what’s up with those Accept tour dates — we had to cobble those together from slightly different lists found on their official Web sites, http://www.acceptworldwide.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/accepttheband . And besides the ProgPower USA and Japanese dates, I’m also not sure if King’s X will appear on all of ’em.

-So yeah, Judas Priest’s “The Hellion” is in that Honda Odyssey commercial but I haven’t seen it. Tried looking around online for it, too, and got skunked. I thought *everything* was on YouTube these days. Or, am I just an idiot?

-Be sure to check out that latest health update from Y&T bassist Phil Kennemore. He actually asks fans what kind of look he should go for, now that he’ll be losing his hair. Have to admire that spirit!

-Check out this “Oldest Metalhead” clip from the BBC that Neal showed me — it’s about an 82-year-old headbanger. Awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOEp-xxqu3E

It almost amazes me at times at how many bands there are out there flying under the radar. October File is another such band that I was recently acquainted with. These Brits are hoping to expand — especially across the pond and gain an American legion. OUR SOULS TO YOU is their second full-length album, and it has some notable extras. First of all, there are two mixes of this album: one by John Mitchell and the other by Justin Broadrick (Godflesh). And the album clocks in at over an hour, giving you tasty overdose of metallic delight. I read other reviews of this album that put a lot of emphasis on saying this was an “angry” album, which proceeded to go into over-exaggerated details on how it should make you erupt into an unstoppable rage. Oh my goodness gracious, I thought. Maybe I should ask someone to strap me to a chair while I listen to this so I don’t break into a fury and try to kill someone. But, alas, I didn’t need to take such precautions. The album can be said to be saturated with anger, but it seems to be a lackluster kind of lividness. It’s like the vocalist is mad, but not mad enough. Enough contemplating over the album’s atmosphere though, let us analyze the music. “Crawl” is what gets the ball rolling. There was nothing particularly outstanding about it. The vocal style is coherent enough, that, if you wish, you can sing, er, scream, along. If it makes any sense, it almost seems that the vocals and instrumentation are parallel — one does not overshadow the other. It could be described as thrash, perhaps hardcore, with some coloring of punk in there. “Corporate Evasion” has a bouncy kind of beat to it. I appreciated the drumming on this track, which espoused a marching-like quality for some sections. It does amount to a certain catchiness, and on the second listen, I had inadvertently memorized the chorus. “Falter” entertains a downtrodden disposition, though the guitars keep up a good pace, making for an interesting juxtaposition. “Dredge” creeps over to borderline spoken word style of singing for some portions. It sounds like slam poetry but on steroids. It sounds like a vexing rant. But the song mutates far from this to an almost chanting style, with the musical accompaniment so harmoniously in tune, it sounds epic as hell. But then we crash back down to earth with the former kind of singing. “Eau De War” ascertains that the vocal range will probably be the same for the duration of the album since we haven’t seen it change thus far. While the chanting/spoken word styles were cool on the previous track, it still was set at the same range. “Eau De War” has a decently long guitar/drum piece towards the end. “Our Souls To You (Part 1)” trumps out sinister sounding drum beats, almost beckoning you — and only you. The guitars shoot in and turn up the volume. But then we’re back to the drumming we were first introduced to. Later, the guitar takes the floor with some riffage to create a very melodic ethos. The speed picks up later in the song. And if you haven’t guessed it by now — it’s an all-instrumental song, and a long one too. “Love Is (Warm AK47)” obviously caught my attention just by song’s gun-happy title. But it wasn’t really all that different from other songs on the album. There was some guitar work that I liked though, where it seemed to almost rain sadness. Very cool. We come to a close with “Our Souls To You (Part 2),” which was an appropriate way to end it. The drumming again is the focal point, but it sounds more tribal. And there’s layered chanting in an unidentifiable language, which is further layered by voices on an audio tape. Then our charming vocalist interjects “f*ck” into all the mix repeatedly, making for a very strange song. While the weirdness is always welcome, I did get annoyed with it after a while. I appreciate this band’s attempts with experimentation, but it wasn’t all that memorable.

TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED – DEGENERATE (A-) Candlelight Records, 2010

Proving that British death metal is not only alive, but viciously strong, Trigger The Bloodshed is on the attack, spawning their latest assault, DEGENERATE. It’s a bloody massacre of an album! “A Vision Showing Nothing” absolutely devours you once you play the song. “De-Breed” is just as heavy, fast, and brutal as its predecessor. There’s a devilish guitar solo that jumps out and hijacks your attention about midway through the song. I couldn’t help but think, damn, that is some fierce talent, and it’s really a treat to see guitar solos at all. “Hollow Prophecy” rips and shreds into your ear cavity with a terrifying scream. Instantly the song has taken off in every which way, making you think the song has been playing for some time, when it’s only been a couple of seconds. Again with this song, there’s some soloing, albeit, shorter, but it’s still appreciated. There’s never a dull moment with this song. “Dead Vein” shows us that DEGENERATE has no intention of slowing down any time soon. It’s almost as if Trigger The Bloodshed got together and proclaimed this to be the most insanely fast, solo-laden, brutally sounding, beast of an album — EVER! And they made that their mission. If that is so, then they certainly hit success. “Dethrone” is one where the song doesn’t start off like a racehorse at the beginning of a race. But give it a few seconds and we’re hearing guitar playing so fast, you think that by now the guitarist’s fingers must be about ready to fall off. Vocally, Jonny Burgan is right up there amongst the ranks of death metal elites. He screams with such a hell-bent fury, that it’s truly for only those ears who can handle it! “A Sterile Existence” shows off some long-ass screams, followed immediately by a quick guitar solo, and then we’re back to sounding melodic. You feel like you’ve been swept up in a cloud of chaos by a malevolent tornado, and by the time the song is through with you, you can barely recover before you’re hit with “The Soulful Dead.” That’s yet another onslaught. There are eight tracks total, just falling short of 40 minute album. But that’s fine, because you definitely get your fill of metal just with that. I also couldn’t help but be reminded of Trigger The Bloodshed’s American counterparts, death metallers Job For A Cowboy. They’re very similar sounding, which is why it is also ironic that they’re touring together (or maybe not so ironic then.) But they’re different due to the technicality. Personally, this is the first time I have heard of Trigger The Bloodshed, and I was impressed by DEGENERATE. This band not only bleeds talent, but is determined as all hell to get to the top. This is a band to keep an eye on.
