-Y&T: A Message From Phil Kennemore

[ Note: This is from the band’s August 8 e-mail newsletter. – Tim]

A Message From Phil…

To all of my dear friends and fans around the world and on the forum,

Up to now you haven’t heard much information (other than about my extreme back pain) because there really hasn’t been much until now. I hated leaving you all in the dark but I didn’t want to say anything until there was something conclusive to say. We do have a lot more information now. The number one thing you need to know is that I have cancer. It wasn’t absolutely formally diagnosed until yesterday.

With the bad news I also got the good news that along with surgery and treatments, I will be back rockin’ and rollin’. I’ll be getting a hip replacement as well as back surgery, which means I’ll also be more agile. The doctor said that this is treatable and I’ll be walking out of this place and I’ll be able to go on the road and do everything I need to do to continue my rock ‘n’ roll life, in due time.

I wanted to thank everyone for your well wishes. I’ve been sitting here in the hospital reading all of the things that you’ve all posted online, and I want you to know it means so very much to me to see how much I am loved, supported, and missed. I can really feel the love as I’m reading. I love reading your posts on the web site forum, and, in fact, I need to hear it. From here on out, whatever thoughts and feelings you have, please know that I wish that I could personally respond to each and every one of you, but I’m not able to right now.

Brad [Lang] — thank God for Brad! I’m so grateful that he stepped in to help keep Y&T on tour, bringing FACEMELTER to the people while I was ordered to the hospital. Right now I think he’s the best guy on earth!

I’ll be released from the hospital within three-to-four weeks, continuing treatment, and at some point, I’ll be returning to the road. Keep the love and good vibes flowing. Do me a favor and go out and see the band now — Y&T is kicking serious ass — and I’ll be back rocking with you all soon.

-Avantasia: The Metal Opera Comes To Town + Headlining The Wacken Open Air 2011

“It’s gonna be a once-in-a-lifetime affair!” said Avantasia main man Tobias Sammet when the all-star project set off on a world tour a few years ago. And although it seemed to be impossible to bring the project onto the stage after an extensive preparatory time Avantasia headlined some of the biggest summer festivals in 2008. To this day many fans recall the Avantasia live shows a magical once-in-a-lifetime concert experience.

Actually Tobias didn’t see a chance to bring Avantasia on stage again, but they will do it again: “There has always been the desire to do it again, but of course there is always a risk. It requires a huge amount of time and energy, there are no figures based on experience, because I don’t anybody who has taken an all-star Metal Opera on the road to play indoor venues. The stage production is abnormally expensive and you must not forget the many people who are involved and who come from different parts of the world. It requires a good timing. At some point we sat together and checked if and how we could possibly do it once again and we soon found out, that December 2010 would be the right period to do a real tour. I admit that four weeks are not really a long time frame, but it’s better to do a short tour than no tour at all. And if we hadn’t taken that chance, it would have never happened because we will come with a lot of musicians and vocalists and it’s a nightmare to mind all our individual schedules with our main bands.”

Unlike during Avantasia’s festival tour in 2008 the band will seize the fact that it’s their own tour and their own shows and play a lot longer on their winter tour: “It was great to play Wacken or Sweden Rock Festival but playing a festival you only have so much time. You play ten songs and people have a party and everybody’s got fun. But doing our own tour we can really create an atmosphere, we can play a lot longer and take people on a journey through the history of Avantasia. We can actually take people to the world of Avantasia itself. Fans can expect a bombastic concert experience.” Many so called ‘Metal Operas’ have been released on albums recently, but Avantasia will bring it on stage and take fans around the globe with them. “You can’t compare a normal band to what we are going to do. If all your favourite singers appear on one stage at the same night to take you on a musical journey, then this isn’t just great, it’s über-great!”

Giclée Prints From Manowar Artwork Now Available At The Kingdom Of Steel

Hey Manowarriors! Now you can acquire your very own, stunning replicas, of the of the amazing oil paintings by Ken Kelley for the legendary Manowar album covers.

These reproductions taken from the original art are simply beautiful and are now available to you as giclée prints. A giclée print is, without a doubt, the next best thing to an original painting!

Giclée (from the French verb gicler meaning “to squirt, to spray”) is the use of the ink-jet process for making Fine-Art prints (first done in the early 1990s).

The term “giclée” (or the anglicized “giclee”) is frequently used to describe any high-resolution, large-format ink-jet printer output with fade-resistant dye or pigment based inks. It is common for these printers to use between seven and twelve color inks.

Though originally intended for proofing, many artists and photographers use ink-jet printers as an alternative to lithography for limited editions or reproductions.

Each print is carefully protectively sprayed, then final varnished, then mounted on wood stretchers and shipped ready for framing!

From FIGHTING THE WORLD to MAGIC – A TRIBUTE TO RONNIE JAMES DIO, imagine hanging any of these classics on your wall! It will look like you own the original oil painting!

-Armored Saint Video For “Left Hook From Right Field” Off LA RAZA Now Live!

Legendary L.A. based metal band Armored Saint recently shot a video in their hometown on July 1st for the track “Left Hook From Right Field” off their current release LA RAZA with director Jeremy Schott of Mental Suplex. To check out the video head over to Metal Blade TV!

Be sure to check out MetalBlade.tv for production videos, interviews, behind the scenes footage, and classic videos from the Metal Blade vaults!

Vocalist John Bush gives us his description of the video for “Left Hook From Right Field”: “BAD ASS!!! That’s how I would describe this video. The photography is absolutely beautiful. Rene, the boxer, did a nobleman’s job and is convincing as hell. Jeremy’s team was awesome to work with and super efficient. Armored Saint was captured raw and with full power. Sometimes making a video, actually the majority of the time, making a video blows. Not this time!” Bassist Joey Vera adds, “The video came out great and does justice to the song. We were going for a ‘Raging Bull’ look and I think we captured the vibe for sure. Most videos are pretty boring to make but this one was actually fun. We spent some time shooting scenes ‘on the fly’ and tried things out that were not in the story line, meaning we had a chance to improvise. The story line is a pretty good representation on the allegories that the lyrics paint. Good fun once again.”

LA RAZA debuted at #49 on the Hard Music Albums Chart, #18 on the Heatseekers chart, #52 on the Top Independent Albums chart, and #2 on the Hard Music Core Stores chart. Armored Saint’s LA RAZA also entered the official German album Charts coming in at #96.

In conjunction with the new video, Metal Blade TV has launched one of Armored Saint’s classic videos, “Reign Of Fire,” here:

Check it out to get your retro video fix and keep checking back for more classic videos coming soon to Metal Blade TV!

-Ross The Boss: Power Of The Night Festival

Pitch Black Records and the entire Power Of The Night Festival team would like to extend their warmest thanks and congratulations to Ross The Boss and his band as well as Scott Columbus for an outstanding performance at Power Of The Night Festival in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Special thanks also for the last-minute addition of an unrehearsed “Hail To England” re-titled “Hail To Cyprus” especially for that evening. A decision which as singer Patrick Fuchs commented was based primarily on the warm hospitality the band experienced during their time in Cyprus as well as the audience’s enthusiastic reaction (fan-filmed video available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DAyYHh1jYQ ).

Ross The Boss delivered top quality metal and proved again both on stage as well as off stage that good solid heavy metal is also comprised of good character and courtesy and of course a tremendous respect for fans. Ross The Boss is indeed a TRUE metal leader!

Pitch Black Records would like to wish Ross The Boss the best of luck with their new album scheduled for release in November on AFM Records. We are more than confident that it will simply destroy everything in its path!

-Styx Set To Launch THE GRAND ILLUSION/PIECES OF EIGHT Tour This Fall, Performing Both Albums In Their Entirety; Seven-Song E.P. Of Re-Recorded Classics And One Brand New Track For Sale At Every Show

[ Note: This is from http://www.styxworld.com/ . – Tim ]

It’s the tour Styx fans have been waiting for.

Styx — Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James “JY” Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums) and Ricky Phillips (bass), along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo — are getting ready to head out on the U.S. concert trail again this year. However, for this round of dates, the band has an extra-special treat planned — it won’t be a typical Styx show. Along with the classic hits, the band will be performing 1977’s THE GRAND ILLUSION and 1978’s PIECES OF EIGHT in their entirety. Both albums spawned such hit singles and Classic Rock radio standards as “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).”

And as icing on the cake, a seven-song E.P., entitled REGENERATION, VOLUME 1, containing six newly re-recorded classics — “Come Sail Away,” “Crystal Ball,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Lorelei,” “The Grand Illusion” and “Sing For The Day” — and a brand new track, “Difference In The World,” will be available for sale at every stop along THE GRAND ILLUSION/PIECES OF EIGHT October/November tour route.

“This is the most unique Styx concert ever,” says singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw. “It’s a hybrid experience of enjoying the artistry of the vinyl album and the energy and of our live performance. Some songs have never been performed live!”

Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early ’70s, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late ’70s and early ’80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Over the course of their 38-year career they’ve released 15 studio albums, 6 best-of compilations and 4 live albums, garnering 8 Top Ten singles. Styx has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

On the touring front, Styx has performed more shows since ’99 than all of the previous years of its career combined. Two Super Bowl appearances, Pollstar box office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, Foreigner (to name a few), two more studio albums and no end in sight, Styx continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time.

MindSplit are a new band yet one with years of experience behind its individual members. With a style planted somewhere between straight metal, progressive metal and classic rock the band deliver a truly epic tale with their debut album CHARMED HUMAN ART OF SIGNIFICANCE which is set for release on September 17th, 2010 on Lion Music.

Featuring veterans of the Scandinavian metal scene in guitarist Matthias Holm and vocalist H.B. Anderson, the pair began writing and recording together again in their spare time c.2003 once again after the duo had worked together in the late ’80s with The ‘n’ Sin. When the music was taking shape bassist Conny Payne (Madison) joined along with highly respect sessions musicians — drummer Jon Skäre and keyboardist Jonas Lidström. This new collaboration turned into a whole different ballgame though when H.B. found his great old, old grandfather Xerxes Anderson’s Artificial Universe (a.k.a. Prof. Xandau 1807 ~ 1851) notes from his therapy sessions.

Prof. Xandau was a much respected therapist during the first half of 19th century and had his sessions all over the world based in both Europe and the U.S. These notes are the solid ground to this project and are used to tell a true story about psychological thoughts and human behaviours. H.B. Anderson comments, “The memory notes declare what’s going on in the human mind in different situations making for compelling listening, although as there are no names involved so it’s totally anonymous. Its fantastic literature and breathtaking reading, the human brain is very complex and odd. You can say it sure lives its own life.”

This inspired lyrical setting led to the music of what would become C.H.A.O.S taking on its own personality. This story line is set to a musically accomplished and captivating release which will draw the listener in from the first listen. Musically the album is big, powerful, dark yet with subtle light and a very impressive aura with a powerful production to suit the mood. This has been further extended by the promotional video for the song “NMe – Myself & I” which has received positive reactions from YouTube viewers worldwide.

With CHARMED HUMAN ART OF SIGNIFICANCE MindSplit has produced a debut album of exceptionally high quality and one that will appeal to a wide range of metal lovers and those with an appetite for enthralling concept stories.

Anthriel – THE PATHWAY
RELEASED: 17-9-2010

LM Promo Page: http://www.lionmusic.com/cd/thepathway.htm

With their spectacular debut THE PATHWAY, Finnish progressive metal outfit Anthriel have produced an album which has all the potential to be hailed a classic and is guaranteed to fascinate metal fans worldwide.

Formed in 2004 by guitarist Timo Niemistö, keyboardist Antti Hakulinen and drummer Jari Kuokkanen the band went through a couple of lineup variations before finding bassist Klaus Wirzenius and ultimately released a three-track E.P. VISIONS OF INNER LIGHT AND DEEPER THOUGHTS in 2007 which won considerable praise on the underground metal circuit. Yet it was until the band found powerhouse vocalist Simo Silvan in 2008 that the bands sound became fully realised.

Anthriel — the Archangel of balance and harmony is the perfect name for the band’s music. With a sound driven by big guitar riffs, deft keyboard touches, a rock solid articulate rhythm section and a healthy dose of expressive vocals high in melody built into intricate yet digestible arrangements this is metal that is easily appreciated on first listen — yet where further plays reveal numerous hidden depths that will keep the listener coming back for more. The quality of material would not be best represented with anything less than a superb production and this is exactly what the THE PATHWAY serves up being an impressive self production by Timo Niemistö and mix by Jussi Kulomaa at MSTR Studios.

On the band’s sound Simo Silvan comments, “We don’t want to go extremity with any style of music. There is a time for a head banging and time for musical landscaping. We try to keep our music as versatile we can. THE PATHWAY is a mixture of various different kind of music styles like heavy, pop, acoustic, orchestral and instrumental and symphonic metal. The music and lyrics were written hand in hand with the album theme.”

Thematically THE PATHWAY is a concept based on a sequence of individual songs and themes with inspiration coming from R.A. Salvatore’s Forgotten Realms: “The Dark Elf Trilogy.”

On the basic premise of THE PATHWAY Timo Niemistö comments, “THE PATHWAY is the story of a man who finds himself grown against his former principles and philosophy of life. He decides to leave his past behind and begin a journey to find his own personal promised land and balance. As the path gets rough good and evil starts to battle in his mind where the reality and fantasy gets mixed. He puts the blame to the Gods for playing with his life and turns his adversities to the divine entertainment with consequences that ultimately lead to the discovery of perfect harmony from within his own soul.”

This compelling story is a captivating lyrical theme for the first class musicianship on offer all of which comes together to make Anthriel – THE PATHWAY a serious contender for best newcomers in progressive metal in 2010.

Vanisher combine an old school thrash/death metal mentality with an absolutely modern melodic fluency allowing them to succeed in shattering all stylistic barriers with their debut album. THE HISTORY OF SAINTS is well rounded in all things relevant in metal today (production/songwriting/artwork) and quickly establishes Vanisher as a band that everyone should keep their eyes and ears on.

-MVD Entertainment Group: Eric Clapton – THE 1960S REVIEW On DVD October 19

The Story Of Clapton’s Formative Years

While few would argue that Eric Clapton is one of the finest guitarists of all time, it is sometimes forgotten just how pivotal, influential and downright startling this man was during the 1960s. And while, throughout the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s, Clapton has remained a musician and songwriter of rare ability with moments of glory resplendent on album after album it was during the decade in which he emerged that his awesome skills were used most creatively. As an early member of the Yardbirds, a crucial part of the Bluesbreakers, a founder member of Cream and “the one who mattered most” in the short lived Blind Faith, EC, to many, really was a deity.

In this extraordinary documentary, his life and career throughout these crucial ten years is put under the microscope, and with the help of archive interviews with the man himself, exclusive contributions from friends, band mates and colleagues, rare and classic performance footage, seldom seen photographs, location and period archive plus a host of other features, the story in question is told in a manner it never has been before.

Includes brand new interviews with musicians and performers; John Mayall, Paul Jones, Neil Innes, Tom McGuiness, Chris Dreja, Top Topham, Ben Palmer, Dave Kelly and Cream producer Bill Halverson, plus expert insight from Cream biographer Chris Welch, Yardbirds biographer Alan Clayson and Uncut magazine’s contributing editor, Nigel Williamson.

From the adventure of a child's mind at the excitement of going on holiday, to a chance meeting full of possibilities that can never be anything more, from ordinary people caught in an extraordinary conflict to what might lurk behind those suburban net curtains, to leaving the earth to escape man made destruction, each song tells a different tale. Mixing folk, hard and progressive rock to evoke the storylines, arK's unique lineup, including flute and guitar synth rather than a keyboard player gives the band a signature sound all of their own, yet distinctly English.

"I always felt that the band and its music never got the exposure and reward it deserved." says Jowitt, known for his success with iQ, Jadis, Frost* and Arena. "I'd long wanted to try to get the songs out to a wider audience. When Steve Harris got in touch last year, it seemed the ideal opportunity. I hadn't expected Pete and Tony to be up for it, but a chance meeting with Pete in the pub showed exactly the opposite to be true. And hopefully, we can show everyone what they missed!"

German multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and control freak "t," is back with his third album. After fronting German prog rock masterminds Scythe and two highly acclaimed solo albums, he took four years to write, perform, mix, produce and co-master ANTI-MATTER POETRY, a 68-minute concept album. t, again, played all the instruments and sang all parts here.

Art is a bitch, and so is literature — and music. They always present us worlds well out of reach — pipedream kingdoms of epic journeys, heroism, boundless yearning and lots of all the things we are, well, let's face it, not. Art is, insofar, simply destructive for your everyday middle class John Doe. It makes him long for things he neither really wants or needs: danger, uncertainty, lovesickness, bleeding hearts, je ne sais quoi. So, for our private universe, poetry is condensed destruction. It is antimatter. This album deals with the cliches that we retreat to when we celebrate unrest. When we crave for craving. When we swap the sun for a black hole. When we die a little to feel our lives again. This album is furious about the stupidity behind this. It is also helpless in avoiding it. It is a one-way street monologue. It is anti-matter poetry.

• A good following from previous albums has a good built-in fan base
• Hypnotic and compelling, this album just hooks you in

[Note: This is a combination of two separate updates. – Tim]

New Neal Morse CD from Radiant!

Hello everyone,

We have been home now and have had a chance to catch our breath and are now ready to put Neal's new worship CD on sale at Radiant! It is titled MIGHTY TO SAVE and has 13 tracks and is 75 minutes long.

It all started when Neal Morse's wife, Cherie, told him that there were quite a few songs that he, Julie Harrison, Wil and Jayda sing at their worship events that are not on CD. Then, Neal got excited and wrote five new songs and kept thinking of more songs that he would like to record, including some German songs like "Heiliger Geist (Holy Ghost)" and one other (which is too long to list here!) so there are two songs that Neal is singing in German for the first time on this CD!

It features sparkling versions of well known songs like "How He Loves Us" and "Mighty To Save" as well as new original songs like "Only What You Do For Christ" and "The Center." Neal played almost all the instruments on this one (even the drums) and it sounds great! Hopefully this disc will bless you and stay in your life for many years to come.

Here's the track list:

1. How He Loves Us
2. Heiliger Geist
3. Mighty To Save
4. Only What You Do For Christ
5. Revelation Song
6. O Herr, Giesse Strome Des Lebendigen Wassers
7. Fall On Me
8. Who Am I?
9. Let Us Worship
10. The Center
11. I Won't Turn Back
12. Spoken For
13. Hosanna

Produced by Neal Morse
All Instruments played by Neal Morse
Sax – Mark Leniger

-Hammers Of Misfortune Landing Page With Songs Of All Four Albums Available! Reissues Out Now!

A landing page that houses pre-orders and one song from each reissue is now live at http://www.metalblade.com/hammersofmisfortune/ . The San Francisco based, groundbreaking progressive metal outfit Hammers Of Misfortune joined the Metal Blade Records roster in early 2010 and is currently at work writing their new studio album, which is expected to be released in 2011. The following reissues will also be made available on vinyl via Metal Blade Records in the fall 2010.

THE BASTARD (originally released: 2001)
"An unknown San Francisco-based band called Hammers Of Misfortune releases a metal opera entitled THE BASTARD, one of the best metal albums ever. It wins recognition in Terrorizer Magazine as one of the 'Top 40 Albums of the Year.' But no one seems to notice. Tragic is only perhaps slightly too strong a term to describe this situation." – Maelstrom.com

The band's first release, THE BASTARD, is an epic tale told in three acts with three distinct characters/voices. The release was met with critical acclaim and was voted among the top 40 releases of 2001 by the writers of Terrorizer Magazine.

THE AUGUST ENGINE (originally released: 2003)
"THE AUGUST ENGINE is one of the finest pieces of epic metal that I have ever heard. Hammers Of Misfortune have exceeded every expectation that I had coming into this album, and there is something on this disc for fans of all types of metal. Fans of The Lord Weird Slough Feg, U.S. Power Metal, Folk, and NWOBHM especially will want to check this album out." – Metal-Observer.com

"THE AUGUST ENGINE was voted as the best album of 2003 by Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles writer Chris Bruni and received a 10/10 rating from a different writer in the same issue: Entirely something new, and entirely something creatively masterful." – Martin Popoff, BW&BK

THE LOCUST YEARS (originally released: 2005)
"Notoriety and record sales be damned, I don't think there's a better band out there right now than Hammers Of Misfortune. THE LOCUST YEARS is the kind of record that will be talked about fifty years from now — this is a metal opera that f*cking rocks unashamedly, dexterous virtuoso metal that never forgets hooks and heart." – Blabbermouth.net

FIELDS/CHURCH OF BROKEN GLASS (originally released: 2008)
"What qualities define a truly great band? Proficiency, of course; technical acumen, originality, a vision — these are sufficient, while heart, soul and depth are absolutely necessary. But there's something else; some magic unknown that makes a band meaningful to its listeners. Whatever that thing is, Hammers Of Misfortune has it — a nearly painful beauty, like first love, a radiant sunset, good fortune descending from nowhere.

"…reminiscent of those glory days in the '70s when ambitious ventures from bands like Genesis rewarded the faithful with an overload of ideas and sensations, albums simply too rich and interesting and complex to play just once, or even 10 times. Hammers Of Misfortune combine gorgeous vocal harmonies recalling folk-based classic rock — the Mamas And The Papas, Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds — with sinuous, complex Opeth worthy arrangements and keyboard pomp Keith Emerson would the proud of. The Hammers are simply the finest unknown rock/metal/folk/Renaissance band working today, and like any lover, I'm jealous of sharing them. But I must." – Metal Maniacs Magazine

You can order all four Digi-pak reissues of Hammers Of Misfortune for 12,99 Euro each at http://www.emp.de/ !

JUKEBOX is a MASSIVE 500+ all-original song box set of songs we have written, recorded and/or played in the 25 years 7th Heaven has been around. This box set is a great musical journey thru different styles of music. We do not think there has been another band to date that has released this many originals at one time. This could break a world record! JUKEBOX has a bunch of guest singers as well as featuring your favorite members. All songs have been written by at least one member of 7th Heaven in the 25-year history. Some songs are brand new, some are older but had never been released, all are fresh new recordings. This product will be available in five formats:

· 1 – A box set of traditional CDs (about 20-25). The box set contains a bonus disk of the original MP3s of demos as they were written and recorded over the last 25 years. This bonus data disk is only available in the full CD box set.
· 2 – A data DVD with all the songs as MP3s.
· 3 – A flash drive with all the songs as MP3s.
· 4 – The Internet: iTunes, Amazon, NTD Records store and http://www.7thheavenband.com/ .
· 5 – A limited edition Apple iPod with the entire catalog on it.

Look for a complete listing of all songs on our Web site with full production notes and credits, as well as writing credits, who is performing on each track, all the lyrics to every song. This section of the Web site will be done this summer. JUKEBOX will be available late-summer.

Update — You can check out over 30 songs off JUKEBOX right now on our Web site. Go to the home page ( http://www.7thheavenband.com/ ) and click on the jukebox photo and the player in that site has some song samples for you to listen to.

We are looking for a release date of September 2, 2010.

7th Heaven Web Site

I just wanted to share a crazy statistic with you. Since we do so much marketing and advertising, we watch our analytics all the time to make sure our efforts are effective. In the last couple months our Web site has been getting over 100,000 clicks throughout the entire Web site per day. Why that is crazy is because when we put the Web site up years ago, I don't think we had that much traffic in an entire year. I thought it would be cool to share that with you.

7th Heaven On The Big Screen

For the next couple of months, 7th Heaven will be seen on the big screen in a ad before every movie that is played at the Streets Of Woodfield in Schaumburg, IL.

7th Heaven On The Little Screen

There will be cameras around 7th Heaven this summer doing a reality TV show on what our life is like in 7th Heaven. You will get to see tons of behind-the-scenes things that happen in our world. We do not know what network will air the footage, but we think it will air this Fall. So when you're out at a show and the camera sees you, smile and show off your 7th Heaven support.

7th Heaven On Billboards

Did you see the 7th Heaven billboards on major Chicagoland Expressways? Keep watching, 7th Heaven will be on different billboards throughout the city this summer. Let us know when you see them.

25th Anniversary CRUISE — The Next 7th Heaven Cruise

Celebrate our 25th anniversary with us by coming on the next 7th Heaven cruise. We will be sailing on Royal Caribbean's "Allure Of The Seas," which is the "Oasis Of The Seas'" new sister ship that comes out three weeks prior to our sailing. We set sail for the Western Caribbean on Sunday January 16, 2011. We have GREAT rates on this ship and have a very limited amount of cabins left available, so please put your deposits down ASAP. The cruise is selling way faster that anticipated, so lock your room and price down soon. We only have four inside rooms left (the cheapest room). The cruise starts at $790 for the week and more details can be found on our cruise Web site — http://www.7thheavenband.com/cruise . (Payment plans are also available.) To book this trip and find out availabilities, email our travel agent Neelie at Cary Travel at neelie@carytravelexpress.com .

This will be on Sunday, September 19th from 12 noon – 3 p.m. off Golf Road in Schaumburg in the Busse Woods Forest Preserve. Details and a map can be found on our Web site under the tour page.

7th Heaven #13 On Billboard Charts In Chicago

7th Heaven is now #13 in the Billboard Charts thanks to all of you who have been supporting the band. To think the band would even show a presence on this chart is amazing.

NEW 7th Heaven T-Shirts And Merchandise

We have a bunch of NEW T-shirt designs available at the merchandise table at our shows. Check them out. Over the next month we will be releasing a few brand new designs and limited run shirts. We also have a bunch of other cool stuff coming out this year like wristbands, necklaces, dog tags, temporary tattoos, water bottles, key chains, beach balls, and things that glow in the dark, so make sure you continue to stop by the merchandise table at each show. 25 Years Of 7th Heaven !!!

2010 marks our 25th year of being a band!!! We will be releasing JUKEBOX as well as some other news stuff coming soon. We typically are not a band that stops to look back because we always focus on the future, but this milestone is one that very few bands can say they have achieved. The history of this band is an amazing story, for those of you who have shared your lives with 7th Heaven over the 25 years, you have seen some amazing good times and some sad bad times. You have watched us get older, wiser and better. We have watched many of you go from high school to college to careers to marriage and families. Feel free to check out our MASSIVE history section on our Web site. It's broken down by years and really is a massive amount of information. You can also learn about the very important band members that have helped put 7th Heaven on the map and keep it there. We are planning to have a reunion show at Durty Nellies on November 19, 2010 featuring some past band members and many original songs over the past 25 years.

All of our original CDs are now available on iTunes. Our new USA-UK CD, SILVER, LIVE AT DURTY NELLIES and FACES TIME REPLACES are all now available. Our new 500 song JUKEBOX will be available sometime in July on iTunes. You can even purchase 7th Heaven ringtones on iTunes. Remember to leave us a good review on iTunes.

-Six Volt Electrifies With New E.P. TEENAGE ANTHEM

See Why Everyone Is Talking About This Rising Band!

NEW YORK, NY — While most teenagers are relaxing on their Summer vacation, up-and-coming pop rockers Six Volt have been busy playing crowds across the country alongside heartthrob Cody Simpson, gracing the homepage of J-14.com, and receiving wild applause from various press outlets including Absolute Punk. With many more dates to come as part of the band's busy Simon Malls and Camplified! Tour schedule, this band is certainly not taking a break! On behalf of their label, Shuffleboard Records, Six Volt will also be releasing new content in a ground-breaking fashion suited to fit the ever-changing digital industry landscape. Their sophomore release, a five-song E.P. entitled TEENAGE ANTHEM, will become available online this October 12th.

Six Volt is the first band off the New Jersey-based music label, Shuffleboard Records. Noticing the remarkable changes in today's modern music industry, Shuffleboard Records and Six Volt will be releasing the new Six Volt content in a contemporary fashion — every six months, a new 4-5 song Six Volt E.P. will be made available to the public and available via iTunes and other digital outlets. This will insure constant new music for fans and an ongoing way to stay in touch with the band! Andy Karp, CEO of Shuffleboard Records and Former EVP/Head of A&R at Atlantic Records, recently spoke on the group, "I've spent over twenty years in the music business doing A&R and promotion and I have a good idea of what it takes for bands to be successful. Six Volt know that more than anything, you have to give your audience what it wants the most — that is, great new music on a regular basis. I'm impressed."

Though young in age, Six Volt has certainly garnered great respect from the press! Absolute Punk recently reviewed their first single, "Mind On Me," and said: "The song drips with the kind of commercial flair and inherent energy that radio charts would eat up," calling the sound "jubilant, caffeinated pop-rock," and described lead singer Nichole Deppe's vocals as "crystalline, honey-dipped, and far-reaching." New Jersey's own, The Aquarian, called Six Volt "legit" and said "Mind On Me" was "honest as opposed to trite" comparing Deppe's "pleasant voice" and attitude to Avril Lavigne.

The band also took J-14.com's Hot Band Alert this June 2010 with a homepage feature alongside heartthrobs Justin Bieber and Taylor Lautner. Check the piece out now at http://www.j-14.com/2010/06/j-14-hot-band-alert-six-volt.html !

What's coming up for Six Volt? With Shuffleboard Records, Six Volt has proudly announced a joint partnership with the After-School All-Stars Organization ( http://www.afterschoolallstars.org/ ) and welcomes them as their official 2010 "Youth Rocks Live" charity. The nonprofit, started by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and represented by celebrity ambassador, Kobe Bryant, provides free comprehensive after-school programs to nearly 80,000 children in over 450 schools, in 13 different cities including Oahu, Hawaii.

In helping to fund development of music programs throughout After-School All-Stars in each of its 13 cities, Six Volt will donate 5% of all merchandise sales to the charity during their 2010 Summer Tour which is sponsored by the Youth Arts Forum ( http://www.youthartsforum.org/ ) and Paul Reed Smith Guitars ( http://www.prsguitars.com/ ). Band: Uncommon Houseflies
Label: Maggot Records
Steet Date: 2010
Genre: Punk, Indie rock, Power-pop

About The Uncommon Houseflies

The Uncommon Houseflies began somewhat by accident when Louisville, KY., music writer and amateur bass player Kevin Gibson asked his guitar-playing son Scott to help him record a song as a Christmas gift. The song never became a hit and no offers were forthcoming.

It's true, however, that Kevin raised Scott on heavy doses of the Ramones, the Beatles, Weezer, etc., and early in Scott's childhood it was common for the two to play air guitar together when no one was looking. It was, in a way, the birth of the Uncommon Houseflies.

"It was a special time," a wistful Kevin said.

"I have almost no memory of it," said Scott. "I was only four."

The duo later added drummer Kevin Hays (the Rumors) and became a band that plays accessible power-pop — sporting punk, indie rock and even alt-country influences — with humorous, off-the-wall lyrics.

The Houseflies broke through in 2007 when their dark-comedy romp "Disgruntled Shooter (In The Nursing Home)" was played on the syndicated "Dr. Demento Show," and they haven't let up, finding their way onto streaming online radio and even iTunes.

Several new songs have become staples of the band's always-unpredictable live show. From the over-the-top rocker "Supermarket Sushi" to the country-fried "Idiots In Love" to the laugh-out-loud ballad "Cotton Candy In The Rain," and even select cover songs like "Love Stinks" and "Camel Walk," the Houseflies always aim to have fun. And it's often at someone else's expense.

The band's new album, EXCREMENT WEATHER, is coming in July 2010; breaths are being held. But until the bomb drops, you might want to consider trimming those toenails. Because, that's disgusting.

About The Album

EXCREMENT WEATHER, the second album from the Houseflies, is the kind of disc you want playing on your car stereo if you're on a first date — with Jack Black. Sporting punk, indie rock, power pop and even alt-country influences, the Houseflies blend parodies, off-the-wall characters and bizarre story lines to create a musical experience that sounds like Tenacious D fronting Fountains Of Wayne while on a bender.

Power-pop like the quirky "Na Na (Where's The Spatula?)" and the tongue-in-cheek title track blend easily with the stories and characters in the darkly funny "Supermarket Sushi" and "Nick The Carnivorous Pony," and sometimes give way to parody such as the 1950s-esque prom theme from hell, "Pink Party Vomit." Meanwhile, songs like the catchy and startlingly funny "Cotton Candy In The Rain" and "Idiots In Love" fill out an album that will keep you guessing as well as tapping your toes and singing along to the unending hooks and pop melodies.

A band that is built on pure fun had to release an album like this one; this is a rock 'n' roll band that once served thirty pounds of free bacon to its fans at a live show. EXCREMENT WEATHER reflects that kind of spirit pretty accurately, and comes with a free slice of bacon pre-packaged with every CD. OK, not really. That would be stupid.

Band Lineup:
Kevin Gibson – bass, lead vocals, gas pains
Scott Gibson – lead guitar, vocals, telepathy
Kevin Hays – drums, vocals, pimp suits
Kirk Kiefer – rhythm guitar, special sauce

Track Listing:
1. Zany Pete's Revenge (1:45)
2. Cotton Candy In The Rain (2:46)
3. Idiots In Love (2:38)
4. Na Na (Where's The Spatula?) (5:21)
5. Excrement Weather (3:30)
6. Beating Up Hippies (2:52)
7. Supermarket Sushi (5:33)
8. Pink Party Vomit (4:04)
9. Zombie Girl (2:00)
10. Nick The Carnivorous Pony (5:50)
11. The Last Roofie (4:26)

Band: SweetKiss Momma
Label: Independently Released
Street Date: May 1st, 2010
Genre: Roots/Southern Rock

SweetKiss Momma, the five-piece rock powerhouse hailing from rural Washington State, U.S.A., comes charging right into the ears and hearts of music fanatics across the globe. Packing an authentic punch of rock, blues, and southern soul, they skillfully combine the raucousness of a wild Saturday night, with the dulcet harmonies of a sunny Sunday morning, and possess the rare ability to be both exhilaratingly fresh and comfortably familiar.

Lead singer Jeff Hamel, drummer Tyson Lickert, and guitarists Waid Hoyt and Aaron Arnold, first began playing together at their local church in the early part of the 2000's (bassist Randy Jackson, a childhood friend of the guys, came aboard in the fall of 2009). After spending years solidifying a well-rounded musical foundation for themselves, each member has matured into a master of their respective craft, and together they meld into one amazingly cohesive unit. Although Jeff handles most of the lyrical and melodic duties, and lead guitarist Aaron crafts the majority of the riffs from which the songs are built, each member adds their own element to every song.

Their first performance came in the spring of 2008, and they soon released a three track, self-titled E.P. in August of the same year. While continuing to pick up steam like a well-oiled locomotive steam engine, the American roots rockers finally unveiled their debut full-length album in May 2010. REVIVAL ROCK, a 12-song sonic phenomenon, deftly displays the vast world of each member's talent.

With CDBaby handling their physical distribution, the LP has reached #1 in sales in "Roots Rock," its primary sub-genre (as high as #2 in "Southern Rock," its secondary sub-genre), while intermittently climbing its way into CDBaby.com's Top-10 on the overall sales charts. As the record continues to sail off the shelves, an increasing number of online and terrestrial radio stations, in a wide array of formats, have been spinning SweetKiss Momma tunes, garnering them new fans all over the world. Additionally, their music is slated to be featured in two upcoming independent films; both set for release in the fall of 2010, as well as an undisclosed video game (formatted for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles) due out sometime in late-2010/early-2011.

While the "SKM" machine continues to achieve extraordinary heights on its own, maintaining a completely independent and self-financed operation, the band says that they would not "shy away" from the marketing, distribution, and tour support afforded by a record label.

SweetKiss Momma consistently wows audiences with their dynamic live performances, and with comparisons ranging from such legends as Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers, to contemporary stars like The Black Crowes and Kings Of Leon, you can't help but smile when you hear how genuinely honest these guys are in representing their influences. Check out their official Web site or social networking sites for streaming audio, further news, and additional information.

-Picked up Maiden's new THE FINAL FRONTIER at Best Buy the other day. (Yes, on Tuesday. I'm still weird about making sure I get stuff the day it comes out.) This time, I actually put the limited/deluxe edition version back in favor of the "standard" version. There was only like a $2.00 price difference, but the deluxe version comes in a metal case that wouldn't fit in my storage unit, and the bonus content was a video (which I'm sure is all over YouTube anyway), some "online extras" that appeared to *not* include any bonus tracks, and some studio footage. Meh. Normally I'm a sucker for the extras but not this time. As for the album itself, so far I've only been able to give it two cursory spins but I already like it a *lot* more than 2006's A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. (Note: That is not necessarily high praise…) Clocking in at 10 tracks in 1:16:39, the boys are still very definitely into long songs. But as I've been saying since, oh, VIRTUAL XI came out, "long" does not automatically mean "progressive." I'm betting 15 minutes could be shaved off this album and nobody'd notice. Back to the headphones…

-I finally finished Slash's autobiography, and just picked up Dave Mustaine's. Gotta love the title: "Mustaine." I've been meaning to track down Biff Byford's and Lemmy's recent autobiographies, but I keep forgetting. I wonder if they're even available in the U.S.? And while I'm at it, I'd love to see something released by Dee Snider and anyone from Judas Priest.

-Speaking of Dee Snider, did you see the episode of "Growing Up Twisted" where his son Shane lost a bet and had to get his chest waxed by his brother Cody? I tell ya, it *was* funny but it was very, very demented and unsettling.

-That's sure bad news about Y&T's Phil Kennemore, but man, you have to admire his spirit and upbeat outlook. Everyone here at Detritus surely sends best wishes and hope for a full recovery.

-Some of those Swashbuckle song titles are killer. "This Round's On YOU!," "The Gallow's Pole Dancer," "You Bring The Cannon, We'll Bring The Balls." Awesome.

-In my current playlist: Iron Maiden – THE FINAL FRONTIER (UMe), Stratovarius – POLARIS + LIVE (Armoury Records/earMUSIC), Lethal Saint – s/t (Pitch Black Records).

Abigail Williams is a bit of an anomaly among the traditional black metal bands. The main difference? They are an American black metal band. And we all know black metal bands are infamous for exploiting their home countries' mythologies and legends and the like, so Abigail Williams did the same thing, but on their turf. So if you were thinking the band's name sounds familiar, it should. It was one of the central characters in Arthur Miller's book, "The Crucible," based on the Salem Witch Trials. Aha! I applaud the cleverness, but when it comes down to it, the band's musicality is unoriginal. The sound of the toll of a bell, and then the album awakens and comes to life. The opening track, "Hope The Great Betrayal," lays the groundwork for what is to be expected, a dark confection of savory black metal, quenching a hunger for something fast and growling. The drums keep a beat that thrashes so harmoniously with the vocals, making the song worthy of spontaneous headbanging. Staying true to black metal spirit, there's ominous howling that penetrates and petrifies the soul. This was personally my favorite song on the album, but it mistakenly makes one think this is going to be a promisingly epic album. "Final Destiny Of The Gods," commences with drumming that is just searing with rage, at least that is the feeling it evokes because it is so insanely fast. But as the song wanes and waxes, so did my interest in it. On all of the tracks, the vocals shred like a murderous knife, making your blood curdle. Well done. Don't get me wrong, these guys are talented, but their music doesn't break any new metal ground. Vocalist/guitarist Sorceron recently commented, "The new songs are far more guitar-driven and have a bit more of a traditional sound in some ways. We let ourselves have much more room with writing this album, kind of a more open, free environment than what we have done in the past." Calling it traditional is on the mark, and maybe they are writing differently from their past works, but not too differently from their predecessors. IN THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT will appeal to black metal aficionados who crave this kind of stuff. For me, it just didn't fill the creativity void.

After purchasing this album, I expected it to be similar to the band's previous releases WAKING THE FALLEN and CITY OF EVIL, but sadly I was disappointed. I am not saying the album is bad; it isn't. It is just different. If you view it as just another band releasing a hard rock album, then yeah, it is a great offering, but this isn't the Avenged Sevenfold I am used to, being a fan after the release of WAKING THE FALLEN. The opening track, "Nightmare," is a menacing song, but I find myself skipping it, not because it is bad, it is great and tries to create the illusion of a nightmarish song. The reason I skip it is to get to track two; "Welcome To The Family" which is catchy, has great guitar riffs, and is most likely my favorite on the album. "Danger Line" starts off promising but slowly dies down to the point of being bland and forgettable. "Buried Alive" is an emotional song, but quite dull, even though some of these songs can be a reflection of the death of drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan; they don't have the staying power of a truly great song. "Natural Born Killer" is definitely a song to listen to, on an album that is a lot softer than previous works, or what I had expected from the band; this one delivers. Now if you thought M. Shadows has lost his growls and heavy voice, just listen to "God Hates Us" which reminds me of the Avenged Sevenfold I used to listen to, it reminds me of how heavy this band can be. I won't delve into the guitar work too much, because if you know Avenged Sevenfold, you know the guitarists are incredible, and if you are not familiar with them, let me assure you, the guitar work on each album never disappoints. Other than an amazing solo halfway through "Victim" I would advise you skip this track, unless you like soft, slow emotion-filled songs. "Tonight The World Dies" is another slow, heart-filled one, which is not my cup of tea, but you may find yourselves liking it. Even though "Fiction" starts with a cool piano section, it isn't that great and isn't worth the time to listen to. The closer is "Save Me," which is a great way to end this album because the song is very good, and is very much a reflection of their musicality and reminiscent of previous Avenged Sevenfold, which is a good thing. Another highlight is that Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy, took over drums for this album, due to "The Rev's" death. In other words, the drums are amazing. I would advise you definitely give this album a shot; if you are a hardcore Avenged Sevenfold fan, you may hate it, but try it out; it really isn't a bad album.

Sophisticated guitar master George Bellas delivers another lesson in advanced composition and amazing performance on solo album number six, THE DAWN OF TIME. Previous release STEP INTO THE FUTURE was a bit hard to take as it was one piece of music spanning what must be some kind of record at 79 minutes; THE DAWN OF TIME is just as lengthy but avoids listening as much like an endurance test, prudently split into 19 relatively succinct songs. George digs deep into his reservoir of knowledge and techniques, impressing with progressive time signatures on "Seeding The Universe" and the title track, delivering inspired shred on "Electromagnetic" and "Nightmare Awoken," and taking some interesting stylistic turns on "Mysterious Light" and "Metropolis." At the end of the day, George makes music for other musicians to marvel at, and marvel they should, as his approach contains a wealth of intriguing concepts and tones; casual listeners and those looking for a quick fix of metal or shred, however, may be disappointed in the time needed to invest in such a creation, but if you're one of those not dissuaded by involved works of art you'll find a lot — and I do mean a lot — to enjoy here.

THE EMPIRE SHALL FALL – AWAKEN (B+) Angle Side Side Records, 2010

Formed in 2008, The Empire Shall Fall is anticipating the release of their debut album on October 12. This album was produced by guitarist Marcus de Lisle and mixed by Sean Small, and Empire Shall Fall also consists of vocalist Jesse David Leach, formerly of Killswitch Engage. Self-described as metal/hardcore they cite At The Gates, Meshuggah, and Edge Of Sanity as their prime influences. The thing that really sets this band apart from the metal masses, is that their lyrics are politically charged. What do I mean? In the opening track, "Awaken," we see lyrics screaming, "It's the system's design to keep us in line. Awaken the passion inside. No one can see it, it's under the surface." The song continues to slam an oppressive regime — and then says that the remedy to this is to "channel the anger to make a difference." They say we must open up our eyes wide and awaken the passion inside. Musically, the song is riveting with metallic rage. There are higher pitched vocals and the guitar work is brilliantly executed. On the song, "Voices Forming Weapons," the vocal range invades new territory with a softer tone. This is not screaming, it's actually singing. But the song ricochets with vehemence back into the satanic sounding screaming. Staying consistent with their political assault, lyrics in this song proclaim "Political methods to misguide us, half truths revealed in time. Open your eyes to see that, we can unite in time… …To up rise against the hate, against oppression. We shall overcome." They say that speaking out can be a weapon in itself, and set out to rectify all of the injustices. "Choirs Of Angels" rockets into a fast, angry and belligerent song. Nothing too special at first, but it progressively gets slower and by the song's end, you're cast into a tragic state of mind. There're some notable guitar pieces that radiate metallic goodness. Lyrically, this song was the most striking to me out of any of the others. Why? It is a song about September 11th and posits a conspiracy theory. The opening lyrics: "On that September morning, all that we see; a terrorist attack against our liberty. Mournful morning gripped in tears as the media exploits and feeds our fears. Dig deep. We see the contradictions, raising questions to this day unanswered. They designed the silence of our dissent, create an enemy for us to hate instead. Lies." I can see this song being controversial, but of course controversial in a good way. It seems like one of the aspirations of this band is to get their listeners to think. They want people to question authority — to question everything. In several of the songs, if there was one notion that they kept coming back to, it was change. This is a band out to change the world! Take the song, "Our Own" for example. Again, they lambaste the tyranny of politics: "We are the future. We must change. Change. Step one in the solution. Our voice. Speak truth to overcome. The enemy is ignorance. Silence is powerless. Fight." There's more lyrics I could cite, but you get the point. Personally, I like seeing a band with a message — and the determination to propagate their convictions and ideas and do it all in a way that satiates the metalhead's hunger for headbanging music. So you've got intelligent and daring lyrics and heavy riffs coupled with brutal vocals. It's the best of both worlds. This has to be one of the best albums I have come across all year.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE VOL. 1 is the second CD from this East Coast band (INDEPENDENCE DAY was their first). After a recent lineup change, the band now consists of Brian Quinn on guitar, Danny Beissel as lead vocalist, Mike Vlaanderen on bass, and Bobby Pirylis on drums. The self-proclaimed "bastards of rock n roll" have recently opened for Tantric, Shinedown, and Candlebox. It's evident on these tracks that each of the members have had a lot of experience in music with a variety of bands, and they list those experiences as ranging from "hardcore bands and thunderous rock groups to gritty blues acts and acoustic duos." Influences are eclectic as well, ranging from AC/DC, The Cult, Elvis Presley, and even The Byrds. However, this strange mix seems to serve them well when it comes to touring. Most of the songs here — "After The Fire," "Down To Us," and "Anywhere (Sundown)" — would rate above the halfway mark on a scale of 1-10, though not by much. "Coming Up" has some interesting harmonizing at intro and outtro that compliments slower tempo. Pressed to pick just one, "Only Time Can Tell" would be the weakest track. Their site hosts four acoustic videos recorded with CellarSessions.com; of those, "Don't Let Go" is a decent effort at a ballad. While Fosterchild is interesting and the songs will appeal to many hard rock listeners, it's difficult to pinpoint anything that sounds truly original on this disk. Maybe it's all in Beissel's voice; there are times when he goes for the hard rock howl that lends nothing to the music, and tends to make most of these songs sound too similar. I would go see this band live, but hopefully they will find something more unique to lend to their sound and their lyrics for their next release.

I've listened to this album several times over and I'm still not sure quite how to describe this band. Heaven Below is an American rock band, but I think their sound can fall into the nu metal category (that's even a bit of a stretch), or otherwise be called alternative. They may be fresh on the scene, but the music sounds all too familiar. The words: trendy, angst-y, and hardcore come to mind. As vocalist Patrick Kennison says, "We love the vocal harmonies of classic bands like Alice In Chains, or the angst of legends like Trent Reznor, but our riffs and song ideas tend to be spawn from guitar driven bands like Metallica, or even Rage Against The Machine." Okay, I can see maybe a little bit of Alice In Chains, and Metallica is good comparison, but Rage Against The Machine, eh, not really. The album runs on the short side, with only six tracks, but it's enough. "Dying Vicariously" is what sets the record in motion. The title alone should give you an idea of the melancholy and oh so emotional nature of this band. The next track "When Daylight Dies," laments about a lost love, with choruses shouting, "I can't live without your love… still I'm standing in the rain, when daylight dies." Even, thoughts of suicide enervate the poor character of this song. The next song is "Heartbreaker" which is definitely faster paced and of a more cheery theme — "cheery" for this band. It's explosive and full of emotion, but the energy is angry not depressive. And right after this, we're back to the disheartening and dismal attitude with "King Of Nothing." There's guitar pieces that play so softly, it seems like they were written for a tragedy. All of the vocals are clean, making the lyrics easily heard. I think teenagers especially would like this band. If you like evocative, dark songs, with despair looming in every corner then try this out. I'd also say, if you like fashionable bands that minimally scratch the metal threshold, this may be something worth checking out.

It could be that third time's the charm for In This Moment. A STAR-CROSSED WASTELAND is their third full-length album, and it's as brutal as it is emotional, with unexpected twists along the way. The band says that with this album, they have found their sound. But what is that exactly? I'd say it's a happy medium between their first album, A BEAUTIFUL TRAGEDY and their second one, THE DREAM. A BEAUTIFUL TRAGEDY is decidedly metalcore and mixes elements of scremo, whereas THE DREAM shifted gears dramatically by softening up and sounding more pop or pop rock. A STAR-CROSSED WASTELAND is angry and emotional, and brings back the vociferous vocals. Listen to the opening track, "Gunshow," which is a powerful metal song, both musically setting the stage for a brutal album, but also starts the beginning of a "themed" album. Vocalist Maria Brink said in an interview that there was debate within the group as to whether or not it was a concept album, so they compromised on calling it "themed." The theme follows Brink on a personal, healing journey, spilling her guts and thus fueling the rage so passionately echoed in the fiery screams. There's also the theme of an apocalyptic and desolate world. But hope is not lost; the earth maybe be a wasteland, but renaissance and growth is inevitable. There's a desert theme that involves yes, cowboys! (See the song, "The Last Cowboy," and of course, "Gunshow" with lyrics professing, "let the best man win.") Songs like "The Promise" are truly a tasty treat; it's a duet (featuring vocalist Adrian Patrick), but not only that, it marries screaming and soft vocals from both of the singers breeding delicious harmonies. They shift from vicious vocals to the sweet-sounding singing so ostensibly effortlessly, it is amazing. "Standing Alone" is memorable because the chorus is catchy. It's melodic yet aggressive! There's uniqueness in each song; for example, "A Star-Crossed Wasteland" begins with a lovely piano piece. "The Last Cowboy" is where the album takes a new twist, because the song half spoken/half sung. Brink's emotion suffuses like a torrent of raw passion. It's gut-wrenching when you listen to the lyrics, song-by-song and accompany Brink on this winding road. Because the songs oscillate on this spectrum of soft, reflective songs, to ballads on one end, to the heavy-as-hell, fearsome songs the other end, you know this album is going to intrigue anyone interested in creativity and diversity. As someone who never had an affinity for metalcore, I am finding that this is quickly becoming one of my favorite releases of this year. Venture into the STAR-CROSSED WASTELAND and experience the odyssey.

Doom, Dooom… DOOOOOOOOOM… yawn. I've been known to dig a bit of Doom Metal here and there but this split release featuring a pair of British doom/death heavyweights was a bit of a chore to get through. Both bands were unfamiliar to me before receiving BLACK LIGHTS & SILENT ROADS, though I'd at least heard of My Silent Wake, who are known mainly in the Christian metal underground since MSW mainman Ian Arkley has also been a member of such cult Christian bands as Seventh Angel and Ashen Mortality. The Drowning are an unknown quantity (at least to me) but judging from the liner notes inside the CD booklet, both bands are good friends and have shared numerous gigs together, which led to the idea for this split. Anyway, musically, both bands on this split sound quite similar and should be up your alley if you're down with stuff like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and the like, i.e. slow, epic, gothic drones with vocals that sound pained and tortured before breaking into occasional death growls during the heavy parts. ("Whine… whiiiiiiine… groooooaaaaan… WOOOOOARRRRRRGH!"). As for me, if I didn't have the CD booklet in front of me, I wouldn't have known where My Silent Wake's half of this split ended and The Drowning's half began. Honestly, the only song that jumped out at me was MSW's final track, "Rebirth," and that was only because it's 23 and a half minutes long (!!) so by the midway point I was practically screaming "For cryin' out loud, is this damn song over yet??" The Drowning are similarly long-winded on their first track, "The Doomsday Feire" (?), which clocks in at nearly eleven minutes. Is it a requirement in the doom/death scene to utterly challenge the patience of the listener or something? I hate to sound like a prick and I realize that I am simply showing my ignorance of this area of the metal scene with my uninformed commentary, so suffice to say that both sides of this split were simply not my cup of tea. As for the bands, doom on, brothers, doom on… you'll just have to do it without me.
