-Kiss Debuts “Kiss Liveshare”

Kiss becomes first band to introduce live interactive concert photo experience for fans

LOS ANGELES — Kiss, the iconic American rock band that has sold more than 80 million albums, played for millions and become an integral part of the American culture, has just notched another first in their long list of stellar achievements: Liveshare by Cooliris featuring Kiss ( http://www.cooliris.com/liveshare-kiss ), an exciting mobile photo-sharing application that will launch on Kiss’ The Hottest Show on Earth tour this summer.

Fans attending The Hottest Show on Earth tour, Kiss’ biggest, loudest, most over-the-top concert tour ever that kicked-off July 23 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, will become the first to have photos of Kiss, themselves, and their friends experiencing the raw power and excitement of a live Kiss concert, appear live on giant Kiss video screens.

Through a free downloadable app, Kiss fans can snap photos during the concert with the highlights being displayed on the Kiss jumbo screen. Users will also be able to share photos to Facebook and Twitter, bringing their friends into the live concert experience.

The new Kiss Liveshare experience is the first time that the excitement and energy of a concert can be shared in real time with friends and fans that can’t be at the live event. Photos taken at the Hottest Show on Earth will appear on Facebook and KISSonline while the event is unfolding, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the concert photos through the popular Cooliris 3D wall.

Kiss is excited to be able to bring this awesome concert experience to fans wherever they may be.

The free Liveshare app featuring Kiss will be available for download at the iTunes Store and Android Market.

Kiss is the first band ever to launch such a highly-interactive and socially-engaging fan photo experience. Kiss and Live Nation Merchandise partnered with Los Angeles-based new media firm Riot House ( http://www.theriothouse.com/ ) and Cooliris ( http://www.cooliris.com/ ), innovator of the fastest and most stunning way to engage with media on desktops or devices, to bring Kiss Liveshare to fans on The Hottest Show on Earth tour.

The Hottest Show on Earth tour, produced by Live Nation, will trek through a mix of arenas and amphitheaters throughout North America. Kiss is giving back to the United States Armed Forces by donating one dollar from each ticket sold to benefit the Wounded Warrior Care Project ( http://www.projectaugusta.org/ ).

Kiss is also partnering with Guitar Center, the world’s largest musical instrument retailer, for Guitar Center On-Stage, an unsigned band competition that will provide emerging artists the chance to open for Kiss at 22 of the band’s tour stops. In addition, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will choose one grand-prize winner to receive a $10,000 Guitar Center shopping spree among other prizes. -Y&T / Meniketti Update

[Note: This is from the band’s August newsletter. – Tim]

As fans in Oregon, Washington, and Colorado witnessed at the recent Y&T shows, the band has been kicking serious butt on this summer’s FACEMELTER tour. Even though Phil Kennemore was experiencing severe back pain ever since the June European tour, he soldiered on and played the shows anyway. Now, with much regret, Phil’s doctors have ordered him off the tour to get the treatment he needs to move forward.

Extremely proud of the new FACEMELTER album, and the work that he, Dave Meniketti, John Nymann, and Mike Vanderhule have done, Phil insisted the tour continue. So to honor his wish, we flew in a bass player to sub for Phil until he is able to return. As the band’s manager, Jill Meniketti, posted on the web site discussion forum about these recent events, Phil says: “On with the show.”

The guys are so sorry that they had to cancel the show in Springfield, IL, but Phil was receiving local treatment and tests in St. Louis and the band was unable to continue until that important business was finished. With less than 24-hour’s notice, Brad Lang (of Jet Red fame, War & Peace, and Foreigner) was gracious enough to step up to fill in on bass for the time being to help out the band and keep the tour continuing. He’s extremely proud and excited to be playing with Y&T and helping out for Phil. Brad’s doing a great job of representing the Y&T live experience. We want to thank you all for giving him the warm welcome he’s received on the shows he’s played so far.

For the record, Y&T has only cancelled one show on this U.S. tour — Springfield, IL — and that one cancellation was due to Phil’s medical needs. Any other shows that have been cancelled or changed or moved in any way are the fault of the agent and/or local promoter for that particular original show.

We hope all of you fans who live near where Y&T is playing the next few weeks will come out to support the band, as they play the classics, as well as songs from the new FACEMELTER CD.

Y&T Does Dallas!

The Fort Worth show has moved to Trees in Dallas, TX. So come on down and have your facemelted.

Y&T Melts Your Face!

-Forthcoming Quiet Riot Documentary To Go Behind The Scenes Circa Crazed METAL HEALTH Era — Fans Asked To Help Raise Funds

Without a doubt, THE heavy metal success story of the early ’80s was none other than Quiet Riot. After years of struggling in L.A. clubs (despite legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads being in their ranks throughout the ’70s), the classic QR lineup of Kevin DuBrow (vocals), Frankie Banali (drums), Rudy Sarzo (bass), and Carlos Cavazo (guitar) hit mega-success with their first-ever U.S. release in 1983, the classic METAL HEALTH. Spawning two hit singles that have gone on to become synonymous with heavy metal — “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Metal Health” — the METAL HEALTH album went on to become the first-ever metal U.S. debut to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard album charts, and resulted in a solid year of sold-out shows and non-stop MTV video airplay.

Despite this being an absolute standout era of the band’s career, very little substantial video documentation has surfaced. That is… until now. Banali is in the midst of constructing a full-length/behind-the-scenes/warts-and-all documentary about the group (the first-ever solely about QR), which will focus on this aforementioned era, but also, recount QR’s entire story — from the first time DuBrow and Banali crossed paths in January 1980, through DuBrow’s untimely passing in November of 2007.

The video footage — directly from Banali’s archives — will include the aforementioned performance in 1980 through some of the last shows QR played, including footage of their Rocklahoma performance in 2007. Additional video footage captures QR in many phases, including a 1982 performance of “DuBrow” (a short-lived name Quiet Riot went by in the early ’80s), with DuBrow, Banali, and bassist Chuck Wright (Sarzo was playing in Ozzy Osbourne’s band at the time), and Cavazo’s first video performance with the band, his second total. Also included will be live performances, backstage footage, sound checks, studio sessions, and interviews — most of which has never been seen.

Banali has already invested money into the project, and to make the documentary reach its full potential, he is having an online fundraiser that ends September 2nd. Fans are being called upon to help back the project, and lend a hand in its completion. Also via the aforementioned link is a list of the different increments you can pledge — all of which give rewards of QR-related merchandise, and as the pledge amount increases, so do the rewards (including such simply awesome items as an autographed QR photo that includes the late DuBrow’s signature, a personal drum lesson with Banali in L.A., dinner with Banali at the Rainbow in L.A., your own personalized METAL HEALTH platinum CD award, your name in the film’s credits, amongst many other cool opportunities).

As Banali says, “The moment my friend Kevin DuBrow died, my life and career went from sixty to zero with his final breath.” But now, DuBrow and Quiet Riot will receive a much-deserved video retrospective, that will leave no stone unturned. Get ready to bang your head and feel the noize once more!

The first stages of putting the documentary together are now underway, and a “teaser” clip of what to expect has been posted via this link:

SMOKE AND MIRRORS Out Now On Frontiers Records USA

HOLLYWOOD, CA — James Lomenzo (Megadeth, Black Label Society) joins Lynch Mob for their summer tour in support of their current release SMOKE AND MIRRORS on Frontiers Records. The band lineup for this tour consists of George Lynch (shred master), Oni Logan (vox), and Brian Tichy (time-keeper).

After seventeen long years singer Oni Logan and guitar wizard George Lynch found their way back together and again show their amazing abilities in some killer new Hard Rock songs. “I would say this new record, SMOKE AND MIRRORS, is the record we should have put out as a follow-up to WICKED SENSATION… better late than never I guess…,” says Lynch presenting the new record.

Lynch Mob was formed by George Lynch, one of the few genuine guitar heroes of substance to emerge from the Los Angeles scene, after Dokken split up in 1989. The band’s first album WICKED SENSATION went on to sell over 500,000 units in the U.S. and featured the talents of singer Oni Logan, Anthony Esposito on bass and another former Dokken member Mick Brown on drums. After a tour in support of Queensryche, Logan opted out, with Robert Mason taking his place on the follow-up self-titled release. However Lynch and Brown eventually returned to Dokken releasing two studio albums until he left again in late 1997 putting together a several new incarnations of Lynch Mob and exploring new sounds with different projects.

-Kamelot: POETRY FOR THE POISONED Album Cover Revealed!!

Kamelot is back, and bigger than ever! Offering a glimpse of what is to come, they have unveiled the cover artwork for their highly anticipated 9th studio album, POETRY FOR THE POISONED.

The strikingly dark, beautiful artwork is from Seth Siro Anton. He sums up his experience in working on POETRY FOR THE POISONED: “It was a great challenge for me as an artist to visualize the music of this new Kamelot masterpiece. Really difficult, as I had to combine a Fine Art aesthetic and technique blended with a really dark, melancholic, poisoned atmosphere. I am really satisfied with the final result; it’s definitely the darkest artwork for Kamelot so far… A sweet poison for the eyes that successfully addresses their new poetry of music.”

Front man Roy Khan assures that POETRY FOR THE POISONED will both please the band’s existing following and expose the universe of Kamelot to a whole range of new fans. “POETRY FOR THE POISONED is our longest and toughest production so far, but when I hear the result I know it was well worth the struggle,” he says.

Debuting in North America on September 14, 2010, this will be the premier release on their newly formed label Kamelot Media Group (KMG Recordings). For this momentous release, the band chose to team up with longtime allies Thomas Ziegler of DisManic Distribution/E1 and Gunter Ford of Knife Fight Media. Guitarist Thomas Youngblood states, “We are in a very unique and fast changing era for the music world; I am very excited about the new venture of KMG in North America. We have a team of experienced and passionate people working with us on this new release, which will be another step for Kamelot and our fans.” Says Thomas Ziegler, “It was a lot of fun working previous Kamelot releases, and I am very excited about the fact that the team is working together again. With our experience and energy and our new friends at E1 we will make POETRY FOR THE POISONED a BIG success!” Gunter Ford adds, “In these changing times, Knife Fight Media was created in order to provide marketing, promotion, product development and label management services for artists and labels in need of maximizing their Brand in a fast changing and challenging landscape of the North American Music Industry. I believe the ‘Kamelot Brand’ is one of the leaders in its genre. I will be working closely with Thomas Youngblood, Roy Khan, DisManic and the Knife Fight Media team around this fantastic new release to grow POETRY FOR THE POISONED even beyond the level of success we experienced with their previous releases in North America.”

The dynamic compositions of POETRY FOR THE POISONED take the listener on an emotional journey that touches both the mind and soul with its mix of Progressive elements, Modern Rock, Dark Arts and also Power Metal! “I think this album is by far our most diverse, fusing new ideas and elements along with the traditional Kamelot sound and style that we have established over the years,” states Kamelot guitarist Thomas Youngblood. He continues, “It comes at a time where many people around the world are searching for something to grab on to spiritually, including myself. I recently lost my mother and to be honest it was very hard on me. So there are some melancholy moods reflected on this album.”

POETRY FOR THE POISONED was recorded at Gate Studios in Wolfsburg, Germany with producers Sascha Paeth and Miro and features guest appearances by Simone Simons (Epica), Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne, Firewind), Björn “Speed” Strid (Soilwork) and Jon Oliva (Savatage, Jon Oliva’s Pain).

POETRY FOR THE POISONED will be available in three versions (Regular CD edition, Digi-pak CD with bonus DVD and 2LP gatefold vinyl edition). DVD bonus material:

-Glasgow-Based Rockers, Logan, Prepare To Unleash THE GREAT UNKNOWN October 5th, 2010

Producer Keith Olsen certainly has a knack for spotting talent — over the years he has overseen the creation of some truly mammoth rock records — namely Ozzy Osbourne’s NO REST FOR THE WICKED, Whitesnake’s SLIDE IT IN, and the Scorpions’ CRAZY WORLD. Logan is in some splendid company with Olsen at the helm of the group’s first world wide release, THE GREAT UNKNOWN.

THE GREAT UNKNOWN — available on October 5th, 2010 — will be the first Logan recording to receive a major push Stateside. It will be released on Guardian Angel in conjunction with Mesa Bluemoon through Universal. The group — Kenny Collins (vocals), Al Reilly (lead guitar), Mick Coll (rhythm guitar), Steve Reilly (bass), and Iain Stratton (drums) — is already a major player in Europe. Case in point, they have opened up stadium gigs for Bon Jovi and toured alongside the likes of Alter Bridge and Hinder. In fact, Logan left Alter Bridge vocalist (and current front man of Slash’s solo band), Miles Kennedy quite impressed, as evidenced by his quote, “They drank Central Europe dry of vodka.”

Accolades continuously pour in about this fast-rising band — including praise from such respected publications as Guitarist Magazine (“If Logan are taken on by a U.S. label and producer, they could go a long way”) and Classic Rock Magazine (“Anthemic, stadium filling sound”). Their instantly memorable tracks as “Hallowed Ground,” “Jump In Again,” and “Rock & Roll Way” are ready to take radio by storm — it appears to be only a matter of time until America catches up with the rest of the world, and falls under the hard rockin’ spell of Logan and THE GREAT UNKNOWN.

Certain albums cannot be simply heard casually, as they leave a lasting impression. Certain albums captivate the listener with such intensity that he becomes part of the music himself. Liv Kristine’s SKINTIGHT is one of these rare artistic works of handcrafted pop.

The Norwegian manages to create an oasis of authenticity with her third solo album. Guitars and percussion solely build the foundation upon which to celebrate her fascinating vocals. This conscious Spartan presentation allows for a surprising emotional journey. The title track “Skintight,” or the darker hit “Boy At The Window,” are rocking mid-tempo tracks that contrast the more touching ballads such as “Twofold” or the lively “Wonders.” Liv Kristine achieves the impossible by creating a studio album with an incredibly real live atmosphere. On the ballad “The Rarest Flower” her voice seems to hauntingly brush up against the skin.

Each song represents a facet of a diversified life. Liv’s voice gives us her sense of freedom (“Train To Somewhere”), her strength (“Life Line”), and her sincere love (“Love In Grey”). She opens up her soul for the world to see. Liv Kristine sings longing into our consciousness, allowing us to break away from the humdrum of daily life. Liv Kristine’s musical works encompass a Grammy nomination in 2005, myriad top chart placements, and the title songs to the cult television series “Tatort” and “Schimanski.” Her current album speaks to her musical greatness. Through intelligent songwriting skills, her songs wake the desire to walk barefoot over a dirt road, feel the snow melt in your hands, or experience the summer rain on your skin. It simply allows one to feel again and after hearing this album, one is born anew. With indescribable ease, SKINTIGHT frees the senses and allows desire to enjoy life to the fullest.

Atrocity Featuring Yasmin – AFTER THE STORM

Atrocity are one of the most successful metal bands from Germany. In addition, the group is one of the most experimental and diverse music acts in the history of metal, because they have the courage to explore new musical horizons. At the same time, Atrocity stands for top-notch productions. With their previous studio effort, the longplayer WERK 80 II, the band entered the top 20 of the German Media Control Charts. Some time ago, the “metal chameleon” decided to work together with vocalist Yasmin — no one else than the sister of front man and producer Alexander Krull — on a new project. This comes as no surprise, as the band already worked with the A-list vocalist in the early Nineties. The result of this cooperation was the E.P. CALLING THE RAIN, which turned out as a milestone of the scene. The songs were a perfect blend of ethnic elements, world music and metal. Up to this point, this was an unimaginable mix of atmospheric yet gripping musical diversity.

The latest Atrocity Featuring Yasmin album AFTER THE STORM does not simply repeat the collaboration, but elevates the songwriting and production to a new level. All instruments were performed live, and a huge amount of percussions allows for a tapestry of complementary rhythms. The driving and tribal-like beats are the foundation of Atrocity’s music and allows for an intense and fascinating atmosphere. The string instruments and vocals harmonize perfectly with the mood of the individual songs and with the whole music, respectively. Besides wonderful atmospheric songs such as the title track “After The Storm” or the emotional “Silvan Spirit,” true rock songs like “Black Mountain” or the anthem “Transilvania” show a completely new side to this metal band. With the mystical songs “A New Arrival” and “As The Sun Kissed The Sky” or the music-turned-Celtic legend “The Otherworld,” Atrocity, together with the exotic vocals of Yasmin, takes the audience into a mythological world. The band featuring the singing siblings Alex and Yasmin switches to high gear with the catchy song “Call Of Yesteryear!”

No listener will remain untouched. The music of Atrocity Featuring Yasmin can only be described with one word: unique!

Genre: Pop/Rock

With a tint of Britpop, MoOt takes songwriting back to its roots. His songs will seem familiar to you on the first listening.

In our time of electronic music, digital downloads and mass-media comsuption, MoOt takes out the fakes and puts his money on the essence of pop music songwriting, standard 3 minutes 30. A verse, a chorus, a bridge and there you go … his tunes will stick in your head and never let you go !

The story started in 2007, when MoOt went into the studio to record few tracks. He will stay there two whole years, writing, recording and producing the songs, playing each instruments. The first album LIFE IS TALKIN’ MISERY was released in April 2009, and is now available on CD & Vinyl, iTunes, Amazon, and many more…

2010 started right with a European tour and the promotion of LIFE IS TALKIN’ MISERY. Sales were good and the L.P. ran out of stock. In the meantime, U.S. Market opened its doors and a Limited Edition of the album is planned, including a live version of the famous “I Am The Walrus” by Lennon-McCartney.

This summer, MoOt will work on two L.P.’s, the first based on collaborations with other artists and the second based on his new songs. A promotional video clip of the new single is also on his to-do list.

-Fear Factory Narrowly Escape Devastating Bus Fire

Northamptonshire, England: Fear Factory in the early morning hours narrowly escaped fire that quickly engulfed their tour bus while in route to London. The fire reportedly stemmed from a back wheel tire before spreading throughout the double-decker coach. BBC News confirms the fire closed down two lanes of the southbound M1 as Northamptonshire fire officials battled the blaze.

Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares released the following comment moments ago: “We had just finished playing a sold out show in Sheffield and we were on our way to London. Everyone was asleep except for two of our crew. At about 3:30 a.m. the bus driver noticed smoke coming from the back right wheel. He stopped, jumped out and noticed a flame underneath the wheel well. He tried to extinguish it but the flames were too much. Everyone on the bus was woken up by one of our crew yelling ‘Get everyone up and out of the bus.’ Everyone grabbed their bags and ran off the bus. We stood on the side of the freeway going ‘thank God we all made it out’ until someone noticed our merchandise guy was still asleep on the bus. A good friend of ours ran back on the smoked-filled bus and got him out just minutes before the bus was completely in flames.”

Fear Factory are currently on tour in the U.K. continuing performances in support of their latest album, MECHANIZE. The band completed their most recent American tour on July 27th to a captivated audience in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The following evening the band departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport for an additional three weeks of dates in the U.K. and other various European festivals.

Cazares adds, “our eyes are burning and we were all coughing from the smoke. Some of us lost wallets, money, computers but that’s not important compared to our lives. It only took about 20 to 30 minutes for the bus to be completely covered in flames. The fire trucks and the police finally arrived but it was too late to save anything on the bus. A coach bus picked us up and brought us safely to a nearby hotel. We found out only a short while ago that the trailer was saved where all our gear was. But the bus is just a metal frame on the side of the road.”

-Late ’70s Punk Experimentalists The Notekillers Return To Release WE’RE HERE TO HELP Via Prophase Music On November 9th

“It’s clear this band ranked with any of New York’s much celebrated no-wave acts.”
– Kelefa Sanneh | New York Times

August 2010 winners The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) Poll!

The Notekillers, who originally slugged it out during the punk wars of the late 1970s, continue their improbable reincarnation march with this barely-hinged celebration of rock & roll noise. Woefully under-documented back in the day, their only official recording — THE ZIPPER, a self-released 7″ — was a favorite amongst the cognoscenti in the experimental underground and a secret influence on some of the most important avant-bands of the past 20 years.

Now, following an acclaimed archival release on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! label, the Notekillers complete their leap out of the shadows and land solidly in the present with WE’RE HERE TO HELP — a brand new L.P. with all new material developed during their second life. Rich with tuneful, neck-snapping hooks that explode at any and all times, this album will connect deeply with anyone who lives for the dizzying, defibrillating power of positive audio aggression.

With WE’RE HERE TO HELP the Notekillers present further evidence that they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with any of the mightiest musical units on the planet. They will be playing the Philadelphia Film and Music Festival as part of the Prophase Music Showcase on 9/23 (At the M Room with Kohoutek, American Speedway, and Dark Sea Dream).

“Astonishing… While the rhythm section churns furiously, David First peels off a series of scrambled guitar lines, precise even when he’s improvising. His diagonal riffs are marvelously untraceable (Surf-rock? New-wave? Heavy metal? Free jazz? Serialism?), and somehow these dense compositions inevitably come out sounding like party music. It’s clear this band ranked with any of New York’s much celebrated no-wave acts.”
– Kelefa Sanneh | New York Times

“That record (THE ZIPPER) was so heavy for me and Kim and Lee… It was this propulsive guitar instrumental that was just breakneck… They had a big influence on me… The music is way ahead of its time.”
– Thurston Moore

David First was recently interviewed for inclusion in the upcoming music doc “Philly Pop Music – The Lost Pioneers:”

-Juston Stens, Ex-Dr. Dog Drummer, And His New Band Give Away Debut E.P., Announce Shows In N.Y., Philly, CMJ & more!

The debut E.P. from ex-Dr. Dog drummer Juston Stens and his new rock n’ roll band Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang, will be released on August 24th, but you can get it entirely for free by signing up at http://www.parkthevan.com/getreal . This offer will only be available for the next two weeks. Says Philebrity.com of the E.P.: “…some deeper 1970s vibrations such as Pussycats-era Nilsson, Todd Rundgren and other shaggy weirdos like Thunderclap Newman, Emmit Rhodes and Jerry Rafferty… and we must say, it’s all killer, no filler.” Enjoy some free Summer jams courtesy of Park The Van Records.

After six years, countless tours, and five albums with Dr. Dog the time had come to part ways and for Juston to realize his own musical journeys and visions. In his own words: “After a long break, I needed to return to myself, my guitar, my piano, my pencil and paper, and my voice.” Juston, self-taught multi-instrumentalist, put down the drumsticks and returned to guitar to write new and finish old songs of life, love, loss, heartache, heart break, and death while managing to keep a positive outlook throughout the entire experience.

In January of 2010 Juston left Philadelphia for Tucson, AZ to record with his dear friends The Golden Boots. From there he drove East to Black Mountain, NC to record with the mountain wizard Seth Kauffman of Floating Action. To round it all off he returned to Philadelphia mix with long time Dr. Dog collaborator/engineer Bill Moriarty. This collection of songs is to be released in a series of 7″ records later this year, and later as a digital E.P. on Park The Van Records.

“Juston Stens will never die!” This was the chant created by the members of Dr. Dog to celebrate the intensity, integrity, and ingenuity of Dr. Dog’s hard hitting metronomic mad-man Juston Stens. It was often heard after playing a killer set, wiping off the bloody knuckles, or just fixing something on the tour van or an amp in a way that would amaze even MacGyver… and so, it has become the working title of Juston’s upcoming debut full-length album, which is slated to be recorded with and produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, and this full band venture will include newer songs co-written with newest member Ms. Carrie Battle (Harlan Twins, Pittsburgh, PA) .

You can catch Juston + his band of brothers and rock n roll super friends at any of the dates below:

-Austin’s Premiere Indie Rock Band One-Eyed Doll Comes To The Rescue Of A Crude Oil Rig In Flames And Its Driver In Texas

Austin’s premiere indie rock band One-Eyed Doll was recently en route from Abilene to a show in Forth Worth, Texas, when they spotted a thick cloud of smoke in the distance spiraling up to the sky. Curious as to what was going on, front woman Kimberly Freeman and her band members Jason Rufuss Sewell (a.k.a. “Junior”) and “Mr. Swimmy Socks” took a detour towards the scene. There they found a Crude Oil big rig tipped over and in flames, with its driver displaced.

Kimberly and crew quickly came to the driver’s aid, offering him water and air conditioning to escape the heat while the emergency response crew battled the flames, as well as the use of a cell phone to connect with his wife.

If the story sounds unreal and straight out of the movies, see for yourself as the band caught the whole ordeal on video and posted it on their YouTube:

Hailing from the Appalachian Mountains in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee, U.S. Christmas create a kaleidoscopic brand of sound that evades easy classification. Founded in Marion, North Carolina in the summer of 2002, the band played rough biker bars, art spaces, and house shows all over the southeast dirt circuit for years, self-releasing albums in rough CD-R format. Scott Kelly of Neurosis heard the band’s third record, SALT THE WOUND (released in Russia by the label RAIG) through his show on Combat Music Radio/KMBT, which inevitably lead to the release of the band’s fourth album EAT THE LOW DOGS on Neurot Recordings.

USX now approaches a decade of playing, recording, and evolving, and continues to blur the boundaries of heavy music with earsplitting rock that is by turns jangly, crushing, dark and truly eclectic. The band has often been associated with space rock with Germany’s Rolling Stone including the band in an article/compilation CD on the history of that genre. However, USX are not simply continuing the space rock tradition (although the band, alongside Minsk and Harvestman, recorded a tribute to the British space-searchers Hawkwind earlier this year, also released via Neurot), but are rather a group of musicians who pay attention to a wide variety of music from all eras and origins. Close attention to the band’s lyrical content will show that USX is not at all concerned with outer space, but rather themes of earth, nature and terrestrial human history. In fact, the mountains and people of western North Carolina are a primary influence on the band’s sound. And though many have focused on their use of vintage synthesizers and theremin, the band does not rely on any one instrument to create its bizarre sounds — proof that brains and hands are a musician’s most important tools.

U.S. Christmas will kick off the weekend performing two special shows with Corrosion Of Conformity before heading out on a handful of one-off performances in September throughout North Carolina including at stop at the Hopscotch Music Fest in Raleigh [ http://www.hopscotchmusicfest.com/ ]. The fest features countless artists from all genres including Weedeater, Harvey Milk and Public Enemy. Confirmed dates below. Further dates TBA.

-I have a few more nuggets from the day I interviewed ex-Scorpions drummer Herman Rarebell. (Check out the full interview in last Friday’s mini-issue #558.5.)

…This was Herman’s first visit to Chicago in a decade, and he commented the area right around his hotel (the Hard Rock) “looked very European.” I’m culturally ignorant so I don’t know if this was meant as a compliment.

…He confessed the big-ass drumsticks shown on the cover of his 1985 solo album HERMAN ZE GERMAN & FRIENDS were actually notched, so that he could break them over his head during concerts without killing himself. (I probably could’ve guessed that…)

…”What You Gonna Do” from his recent HERMAN’S COLLECTION features a rap from Prince’s former bass player.

…I said his final Scorpions album, 1995’s LIVE BITES, seemed kind of “thrown together” and he bristled just a little bit, saying he actually liked it because his drum sound on it was awesome.

…We talked a bit more about the Scorps’ first post-Herman release, 1996’s limp PURE INSTINCT, and he revealed guitarist Rudolf Schenker didn’t much care for the band’s new direction on it, either, and that vocalist Klaus Meine wanted to go for that sound/vibe.

-So, Buckcherry… Here’s more hype for the new disc ALL NIGHT LONG:

“In the spring of 2010, meat-and-potatoes metal heads were briefly forced to contemplate a world without Bret Michaels and shortly thereafter grapple with the loss of the great Ronnie James Dio. It had to be reassuring, then, to know that Buckcherry was releasing ALL NIGHT LONG, the band’s fifth studio album, in a couple of months. In an era in which doomy experimentalism on the one hand and post-Creed douche-rock on the other had pulled up right alongside metal’s rich history of righteous sleaze, Buckcherry maintains an almost quaint swingin’-d*ck approach to hard rock. ALL NIGHT LONG was produced by Marti Frederiksen, who has also worked with Aerosmith and Def Leppard.”

“Post-Creed douche-rock?” Awesome. Totally awesome.

-Steve showed me that Wildside bit, but we still don’t actually know who is in the band. We’re assuming it’s the same lineup that played a gig or two earlier this year, with 4/5ths of the 1992 UNDER THE INFLUENCE lineup: singer Drew Hannah, guitarist Brent Woods, bassist Marc Simon, and drummer Jimmy D.

-I’ve watched the first four episodes of Dee Snider’s new A&E reality show “Growing Up Twisted,” and I must say it’s pretty darn good. His sons are freakin’ hilarious, and it feels about 500% more realistic than “Gene Simmons Family Jewels.”

-In my current playlist: Y&T – FACEMELTER (Meanstreak Music Co.), Stratovarius – INFINITE: SPECIAL EDITION (Armoury Records/earMUSIC), Mob Rules – RADICAL PEACE (AFM Records), Chinawhite – CHALLENGES (Rock Company), Sweet – I SAW HER STANDING THERE (SINGLE) (indie).
