-Nightfall In Cooperation With Metal Hammer Greece Launch Online Player With Two Songs Off Stunning New Album ASTRON BLACK AND THE THIRTY TYRANTS!

Click http://www.metalhammer.gr/magazine/ and check out the player with the two new songs “Astron Black” and “Astronomica/Saturnian Moon!”

Pompous, grandiose, savvy — the album attracts names from people who have been enjoying an earlier audition, offering satisfaction to the whole team involved in the genesis of it.

The band claims ASTRON BLACK AND THE THIRTY TYRANTS the best Nightfall album so far, raising expectations to the maximum. “We have worked hard and we’ve put lots energy and effort in the details of the production. The outcome is massive and believe can attract any metal fan’s attention.”

The powerful Athenian act is now running on an ingenious combustible engine made of Greek, American and German blend and is aiming high. Dare to join!

The album’s artwork has been created by Travis Smith (Opeth, Death, Nevermore, Katatonia, a.o.). It is unique and beyond Mr. Smith’s typical patterns. “The front cover depicts the sea, the grand opposite of the sky-cum-space, and the means we humans are inventing to explore the unexplored. We are part of this universe and we use its planets to navigate, to tune our lives through the ‘time’ set by their motion, and who knows, may be to escape to some day in the future.”

The album was recorded in various places with Soundlodge (Germany) being the main studio. It has been produced by Efthimis Karadimas (“Athenian Echoes”) and co produced by Jorg Uken (known from his work with God Dethroned, Dew Scented, and Sinister).

ASTRON BLACK AND THE THIRTY TYRANTS will be released on August 27/30 in Europe and on August 31 in North America.

Suicidal Records is proud to announce the release of Infectious Grooves/Cyco Miko’s FUNK IT UP & PUNK IT UP: LIVE IN FRANCE ’95. Recorded live in Lyon, France in 1995 by soundman Tom Abraham straight from the board with zero sound alterations, this never-before-released double live gem features original Infectious Grooves members Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies), Robert Trujillo (now with Metallica), Dean Pleasants (Suicidal Tendencies), Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) and Dave Nassie (former No Use For A Name; current Bleeding Through). Infectious Grooves was formed soon after Robert Trujillo joined Suicidal Tendencies in 1989. Muir and Trujillo got together with some friends to write song that centered more around the bass, but with the intent of giving everyone else a whole lot of freedom. “Sex Pistols and Parliament were my two favorite bands when I was young,” comments Muir. “People think they’re completely different but I saw a lot of similarities, even if musically they were categorized as completely different styles. There’s something beautiful about breaking rules that never should have been made.”

Suicidal Records released FUNK IT UP & PUNK IT UP: LIVE IN FRANCE ’95 on June 15th, before the new Infectious Grooves record hits stores later this year. Further details TBA.

-Progressive Metal Band TesseracT Signs Worldwide Deal Century Media And Will Tour The U.S. With Devin Townsend

Century Media is proud to announce the worldwide signing of progressive metal act, TesseracT.

Hailed as one of the best unsigned bands from everyone from the Washington Post to U.K.’s RockSound magazine, TesseracT are pleased to finally shed the “unsigned” tag as they announce a worldwide recording deal with Century Media Records.

The band comments: “TesseracT is very excited to be working with Century Media. We have been looking for a long time and have spoken to many companies but feel that the hard work ethic and enthusiasm that Century Media showed will help take us to the next level and will see TesseracT emerge from the underground and on to the international scene.”

TesseracT has spent the last year finalizing their debut album, ONE, which was produced by TesseracT band mates, Acle Kahney and Amos Williams. With constant support from the U.K. media, TesseracT has been able to achieve a loyal following in their home country as well as the rest of Europe, having their video for “Concealing Fate Part II” in constant rotation on Scuzz TV and other media outlets. They’ve toured throughout the U.K. and EU playing everything from clubs to festivals and last spring made it over to Russia for the first of what will surely be many stops. Their international touring plans continue as they are pleased to announce they were invited as special guests on Devin Townsend’s North American West Coast run.

“For TesseracT to be on the road with Devin Townsend is just unbelievable for us. From his work with Steve Vai to the craziness of SYL and all the way through to his latest solo albums, he’s always been way out there, pushing the boundaries of modern rock and metal and has been a constant in cutting edge music. It’ll be a great opportunity for us to watch and learn from a very creative and accomplished musician and song writer. We cannot wait for October to come!”

Formed in 2003 as a solo writing project in the mind of guitarist Acle (who was a founding member in Fell Silent) TesseracT first broke through in the scene with their 2007 demo and later appearances at U.K.’s Bloodstock, Hammerfest, Caos Emergente in Portugal and the Hellfire 2 festival at the Birmingham NEC arena. TesseracT soon become one of the most talked about bands among musicians and tech-heads, thanks to the quintet’s time signatures and musical complexity. TesseracT are far from an exclusionary exercise in tech metal pomposity though. They fully embrace their experimental, prog sensibility without excessive indulgence or pretentiousness, delivering atmospheric, metallic songs that stir strong emotions and evoke powerful mental images.

TesseracT is:

Acle Kahney – Guitars
Amos Williams – Bass
Dan Tompkins – Vocals
Jay Postones – Drums
James Monteith – Guitars

TesseracT 2010 North American Tour Dates, special guest to Devin Townsend

10/8 – Vancouver – Rickshaw

10/10 – Portland – Hawthorne
10/12 – San Fran – Slim’s
10/14 – Los Angeles – Key Club
10/15 – San Diego – Ramona

-Hard Rock Trio One Eyed Doll Releases Their Rave Reviewed Album BREAK

One-Eyed Doll Raved The Next Joan Jett!

Austin’s Hard Rock Trio Fronted By Wild Woman Kimberly Freeman Is Rattling Cages And Brainpans Letting Their Fans “Name Your Own Price” To Download Their Popular Album BREAK

Sporting a cowboy hat, ragged fairytale dress, striped long-leg tights and lace-up mega boots, One-Eyed Doll’s front woman Kimberly Freeman, is a wild-eyed presence even before she belts out a note. As soon as Freeman unleashes her voice on stage it’s combined by slashing, pulling and hammering on her guitar. Freeman’s on-stage persona is a mixed-up Strawberry Shortcake taking a wrong turn and ending up in Tim Burton’s infamous movie, “Nightmare Before Christmas,” creating the illusion of the unpredictable. That personality can be found throughout the band’s latest album, BREAK, which as with past releases, is innovatively offered to fans as a “name your price” to download the album for $10, $.50 or even free.

Named the #1 rock band in Austin, TX by Reverb Nation, One-Eyed Doll swept the SXSW Music Awards two years in a row (2009-2010) in numerous categories, including Best New Band, Best Punk Band, Best Metal Band, Best Goth Band, Best Female Vocalist and more. The band has appeared in Guitar World magazine, toured nationally with their eye-popping and ear-bending performances, which has won over reviewers, and has also found a devoted flock at major animation and comic conventions.

At One-Eyed Doll’s core is Freeman and drummer/producer Jason Rufuss Sewell, AKA “Junior.” The pair has worked together in the studio since 2006, Junior taking the drum throne in late 2009. BREAK follows two previous albums, HOLE and MONSTER, along with Freeman’s atmospheric “Sleep,” which is the title of her self-released book about making the album. Freeman has also released another raw, acoustic and sometimes A Cappella album, LIVE ON SOUTH CONGRESS, which was recorded at various eclectic spots around Austin.

Freeman’s music journey began on the west coast, playing in coffeehouses around the Eugene, Oregon area, singing many songs she’d actually written while in China. Her time in the world’s most populace nation came after volunteer work she did with the American Red Cross following the tragic events of 9-11. She calls the experience working at Ground Zero “traumatizing.”

“I needed to leave the country, get some head space,” she says. With the experience teaching English as a second language she applied though she didn’t know a word of Chinese. “I had to learn quickly,” she says. “It’s amazing what the mind can accomplish under pressure.”

While working in China she also began performing — despite her insistence that she wasn’t a singer — her boss would trot her out before Chinese businessmen and politicians at events. “I’d sing old Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline tunes, old honky-tonk. They loved it. I started rewarding children in the classrooms with songs and once in a while threw in my songs and those affected them so much more.”

A little trouble in China kept Freeman there longer than intended, but when she returned home, she decided to try her hand at live performance with her grandfather’s old guitar.

Eventually, Freeman met some other musicians who asked her if she wanted to form a rock band and a new rock princess was crowned. The band hit the road on less than a shoestring budget and after a harrowing incident where the drummer jumped off a cliff into dubious shallow waters (he survived, but barely), the group ended up in Austin, where it dissolved. Freeman found a new home and formed One-Eyed Doll, creating a buzz with her larger-than-life performances.

While she’d never studied performance art, Freeman’s grandfather, Bernie Jones, was also a touring slapstick comedian — blind in one eye — but served as an inspiration to the band’s name. “The band name is a tribute to him and also comes from the metaphysical idea of a third eye,” states Freeman.

One-Eyed Dolls’ BREAK has been hailed as the band’s best album so far. Insight Magazine said the group has “…turned in a studio recording that is as twisted, enchanting and real as their live show.” BREAK’s lead track, “Airplane Man,” was inspired by a bodybuilder friend who had “wings” of his own. Freeman calls the catchy and rocking “Beautiful Freak,” a slice of candy-feel pop, like the music she often heard in China. The theme of murder as metaphor surfaces in two songs, “Murder Ballad” and “Murder Suicide,” while “Cinderblock” is a child abuse story about a young child with an alcoholic father. “New Orleans” comes from an unfortunate and horrifying incident of racial violence witnessed in the Big Easy and “Resurrection” is a tale of young love, death and hope that sadly never comes.

Recently the San Antonio Music Examiner gave Freeman the ultimate comment claiming “Freeman quickly becoming Texas’ own Joan Jett.”

“This is three-piece rock the way it should be done,” said The Aquarian. Sepiachord summed it up with “The band has a wonderfully theatrical style, but they are a rock band. A kick ass rock band.”

With BREAK quickly making waves, a new band documentary that’s spreading the word, plus, a Tregan musical endorsement and full studio offerings through Freeman and Sewell’s Nebulost Productions, the One–Eyed Doll universe continues to expand.

In concert, songs from BREAK blast into new places, no two shows the same. “I never write set lists, It’s all spontaneous,” says Freeman, who’s been known to leap into crowds and then take a running charge to hurl herself back on stage, vaulting over drums to crash into Junior.

“It’s me, amplified,” Freeman says. “We never know what’s going to happen.” And that spontaneous combustion of rocking anticipation is what makes One-Eyed Doll so rare.

-Slovenian Thrash Kings Negligence Complete Work On New Album COORDINATES OF CONFUSION! Release Date Set!

Slovenian Kings of Thrash Negligence have completed the work on their upcoming new album COORDINATES OF CONFUSION.

The album was mixed by Ruzz (drums) in their own Negligence studio in late spring of 2010 and has just been mastered at West West Side Music in New York by Alan Douches.

“We’re stunned by the result of the mixing and mastering and can’t wait for you metalheads to hear it!” comments the band.

COORDINATES OF CONFUSION will be released the 8th/11th of October 2010 via Metal Blade Records in Europe!

Negligence was formed in 2000 by Dyz and Jey, two excellent Slovenian guitarists who shared the same passion for music and decided to start working together. They soon found a proper and stable lineup and played lots of shows in their homeland Slovenia including a gig at the infamous Metal Camp festival. Between 2003 and 2005 they also released three unnamed demos.

2005 marks a turning point in the history of Negligence when they parted ways with their old singer and presented the 15-year old Alex as their new front man. The band gathered a bigger fanbase and in 2007 Negligence independently released their debut album OPTIONS OF A TRAPPED MIND. The album opened many new doors for the group and got a good reception amongst metal fans and received great reviews worldwide. Following the release, the band went on to promote their album supporting some of the biggest acts in metal, such as Exodus, Forbidden, Heathen, Sadus and Death Angel among others.

At the end of 2009, longtime member Dyz parted ways with the band but was still part of the production for the second album. Negligence have recently found a second guitar player — his name is Aljo — who will help increasing the sheer power the band is able to deliver on stage!

Alex – vocals
Jey – guitars
Aljo – guitars
Lipnik – bass
Ruzz – drums

Mondo Generator – “Dog Food”

What do Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures), Happy Tom (Turbonegro) and Marc Diamond (The Dwarves) all have in common? Aside from the fact they all play in some of the best bands to ever grace the earth, they all feature on the brand new single from Los Angeles band Mondo Generator. The first taste of the new album from the band which is due for release in July, is the track “Dog Food” which is set to be unleashed in May to coincde with the beginning of the bands upcoming tour.

Over the last year, band founder Nick Oliveri and fellow member Hoss, alongside producer Bradley Cook have been working on Mondo Generator’s fourth full-length album TIME TO DESTROY. During the recording process they have enlisted a number of guests to make an appearance, “Dog Food” is the first taste of who is featured on the album. With Marc Diamond on guitar duties, Happy Tom has laid down some bass tracks, while Dave Grohl provides the drum tracks and Nick Oliveri delivers his trade mark vocals.

With a fresh Mondo Generator lineup in place, the band will kick off a world tour in Australia from late May before heading to Europe for shows across June and July which includes both festival and club shows. They’ll hit home territory for a US tour in August and September.

“Dog Food” will be released as a limited edition 7″ as well as in an extended CD/digital format.

-This Is The Summer Of THE WRETCHED SUN…

Minneapolis Prog-Metal Masters and winners of the Scion/MetalInsider No Label Needed contest Iron Thrones are coming to YOUR town!

“Epic” is a word that is not lightly used in Metal, but could apply to a number of tracks on the Iron Thrones E.P., THE WRETCHED SUN. “We focus on conveying emotion and building an epic atmosphere, and sometimes it takes 8-12 minutes to say what we’re trying to say,” says guitarist and producer Henningsgard. “We’d never cut it short just for children with short attention spans: there’s no Disney version of Iron Thrones.” Produced by Will Putney for Machine Shop Productions (Lamb Of God, Clutch, Four Year Strong, Chiodos) this second release for Iron Thrones comes after their victory in the No Label Needed Contest & Series presented by Scion and MetalInsider, beating out hundreds of bands in the quest to gain knowledge and assistance in navigating the business of music.

The Minneapolis-based four-piece came together from the demise of guitarist and producer Henningsgard’s band Everest. Vocalist, Adam Clemans (previously of Sumerian Records’ Veil Of Maya); Drummer, Peter Clark (whose prior band recorded with Henningsgard) and Bassist, Curtis Parker joined the remains of Everest and since the band was so renewed in sound and personnel, they changed their name to Iron Thrones prior to releasing their debut. That self-produced album, VISIONS OF LIGHT, was self-released in November of 2008 as a free digital download and was re-released on Tribunal Records in early 2009. The critical response was overwhelmingly positive to this first offering.

The band’s sound, inspired by the likes of Opeth, Burst, Mastodon, and Between The Buried And Me, as well as post-metal such as Cult Of Luna and rock bands such as Cave In and Thrice, was amped up further by Putney. “With THE WRETCHED SUN, we were able to compile everything that’s great about intelligent metal into one cohesive work of art. It’s refreshing to work on a record with as much creativity and diversity as these guys display. I’m glad the epic production did it justice,” Putney explains.

And the critics agree… “THE WRETCHED SUN slays and must only be listened to in its entirety,” says Marc Meltzer of MetalInsider. Albert Mudrian, editor of Decibel Magazine, raves about “I Once Had The Crown” saying the track “F#*!ing rules!”

On this album, the band goes back to its early roots and takes a few notes from their first two classic albums: SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE and HARDCORE 81. TALK – ACTION = 0 was produced by chief punk Joe Sh*thead Keithley and Chon (Live Free Or Die).

Keithley, Canada’s godfather of punk, has teamed with his cronies Floor Tom Jones (drums) and Dirty Dan Sedan (bass) to come up with one of D.O.A.’s hardest hitting albums to date. On this lucky 13th full-length, there’s plenty of what one might expect from the boys: power, politics and humor.

The album opens with the blistering track “That’s Why I Am An Atheist,” followed up by the Eddie Cochran inspired “Rebel Kind.” If you have ever doubted that D.O.A. has always been a barometer of the times we live in, check out the angry anthem “Don’t Bank On A Bank” and the all too timely “I Live In A Car…”

Music Video: http://www.youtube.com/joekeithley

Canada Single on iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/25sxad6

Further to that point, the track “The R.C.M.P.” explores the misdeeds of Canada’s national police force. To mix things up, the band includes an ode to Star Trek with the song “Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty And Bones,” and there are sizzling covers of “The Times They Are A-Changin'” and “That’s Amore.”

D.O.A. burst onto Vancouver’s music scene in 1978 and have been rocking the world, making people think, and sticking it to the man ever since. After they released their first snarling piece of vinyl, the infamous DISCO SUCKS 7″ E.P., it became an underground hit and opened the doors to international prominence, riots, rip off record companies and legions of fans.

In 1981, D.O.A. made the term “hardcore” their own and pushed it into the common vernacular. With the release of the legendary album HARDCORE 81 and subsequent tours by that name, D.O.A. became known as the fathers of hardcore. The band has always worn its politics on its sleeves and done a lot of rabble rousing along the way. D.O.A. has also worked hard at helping out those that really need help over the years. They’ve played benefits for: Rape Relief, anti-racism, anti-globalization, OXFAM, first nation’s rights, anti-censorship, and environmental causes, amongst many others.

D.O.A.’s people power philosophy and sound has been forged by Keithley. His powerful songwriting, singing, guitar playing and stage charisma have always anchored D.O.A. Joe has run for the Green Party three times in Vancouver and his book about D.O.A. entitled “I Sh*thead – A Life In Punk,” went on to become a Canadian best seller.

Other Interesting D.O.A. Facts:

– In 2002, Mayor Larry Campbell declares December 21 to be D.O.A. Day in Vancouver

– In 2009, Keithley was voted one of British Columbia’s all time most influential citizens by Vancouver Sun readers

– Keithley ran for the Green Party three times, the third time he received the second most votes of anybody in the party

– Keithley founded Sudden Death Records in 1978, SDR now has 88 releases

-Divinity Confirm First Dates In Support Of New Album; THE SINGULARITY In Stores August 10

Preparing for the August 10 release date of their latest album, THE SINGULARITY, Canada’s Divinity today announce their first live performances to support the album, their first via Candlelight Records. The shows are scheduled pre-release with additional dates in September with full touring planned for October.

Guitarist Sacha Laskow comments, “We are stoked to cross this great, giant country once again to promote the new album release and be a part of some sick shows with some of the best metal bands in the world. We are also so glad to finally have our new album out and available everywhere, so make sure and pick it up August 10th. We spent a year locked in the studio perfecting the album and are extremely proud with the results. It’s a snapshot of where we are in time with all the influences the different songwriters bring to the table coming together under one theme.”

About.com calls Canadian modern metal juggernaut Divinity “a band to keep an eye (and ear) on.” Following their debut album, ALLEGORY (2008, Nuclear Blast), the Alberta-based five-piece have crafted another polished album of melodic death/thrash that is sure to further their already growing fanbase. “The more I listen to THE SINGULARITY, the better it gets,” says MetalSucks on an early review of the album. “It’s complex, it’s progressive, it’s deep, it’s brutal, it’s shreddy, it’s hooky, it’s artsy… it’s everything you want a metal record to be.”

Armed with an arsenal of growls, high-pitched screams, and melodic clean vocals, THE SINGULARITY successfully works through an amalgamation of crushing thrash, complex progressive metal arrangements and brutal death metal overtones. It should easily qualify as one of the year’s more memorable aural assaults. The poise of each song’s shifting time signatures and their unpredictable rhythmic insanities alone are devastating. Lyrically tackling the themes of mindless consumerism, survival in the midst of adversity, the chaos of existence, and humanity’s battle against technology, Divinity deliver a rock-solid audio palette. Songs “Monsters Are Real,” “Emergent,” “Beg To Consume,” and “Lay In The Bed You’ve Made” unquestionably exhibit the band’s dynamic and ferocious range.

Divinity, featuring vocalist Sean Jenkins, guitarists James Duncan and Sacha Laskow, drummer Brett Duncan and bassist Nick Foster, have performed alongside Cannibal Corpse, Overkill, Into Eternity and others. They were a participant on 2008’s Canadian Summer Slaughter Tour.

-Acetate Records Announces An Unreleased Album By The Factory And A New Record By The Superbees On September 7

The Factory – s/t

“Andy Warhol would be proud. Spinal Tap would be jealous. Sergio Leone would be transported.” — Washington Post

Much like predecessors New York Dolls, Stooges and Dead Boys, The Factory burned like a roman candle, then disappeared into the night. The Washington D.C. band ruled the roost in the late 1980s, opening for Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Public Image, Ltd. and Johnny Thunders, turning the heads of both fans and music industry reps along the East Coast.

Led by Vance Bockis (formerly of The Obsessed, 9353 and doom metal gods Pentagram), The Factory were a brash extension of late 1970s Rolling Stones, picking up where the strut and sneer of SOME GIRLS and TATTOO YOU left off, creating an explosive concoction of straight ahead Rock n’ Roll, Punk and R&B. Unfortunately outside influences got the best of them and The Factory broke up in 1992 without formally releasing anything more than a track on a compilation L.P.

Acetate president (and D.C. native) Rick Ballard held on to The Factory demo he got from guitar player Robbie Limon for the last 20 years and recently found the band online. He immediately contacted them to discuss a release — the master tapes were located, cleaned up and mastered.

“Self Submission” starts the record with the subtlety of an alarm clock, Bockis barking and sneering over tight rhythms, while closer “Six Feet Down” is a warning shot of things to come in a lifestyle pushed too far. In between, they effortlessly explore seedy, drugged-out, and sometimes transcendent side of the city. From the disco-tinged “Love To Dance” to the melancholy of “Misfortune Son,” The Factory capture the gritty pulse of the D.C. streets on this self-titled release.

The Superbees – TOP OF THE ROCKS

The Superbees are back with the long awaited follow-up to HIGH VOLUME. Critics hailed their raucous Acetate Records debut as “an electrifying set of garage rock that would impress fans of Thee Hypnotics, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the White Stripes. The band crafts undeniably catchy tunes out of influences like MC5, the Stooges and Rolling Stones, complete with vocalist and guitarist Dave James’ wall of searing riffs.”

Back once again with the original lineup, The Superbees deliver TOP OF THE ROCKS, a knockout six-song E.P. that picks up where HIGH VOLUME left off. Joining the Bees once again are Jake Cavalier (The Fuzztones, Lords Of Altamont) on Farfisa and indie-rock recluse Cody ChesnuTT (The Roots), who handles percussion duties on “Bad News.”

“The joint was packed to the rafters, the benefit was to replace equipment stolen from The Superbees, who opened the show with a blistering set of Detroit style garage punk. Check these guys out, they’re very cool.” — Jeff Dahl, Sonic Iguana

“…one of the most electrifying pure rock bands in town… a searing set of Saints/Sonics-inspired garage shock. Vocalist/guitarist Dave James… a mad riffing hooligan, knocking out killer chords while engaging in high-energy Townshend-like leaps and scowling at the audience…” — Jim Freek, LA Weekly

-Weedeater Announce 3rd Time’s A Charm Tour; Recording Of New Album Nears

Sludge bastards Weedeater have announced several new headlining shows throughout the Midwest and Southeastern U.S. this September. Kicking things off in their home state, the band will devastate the crowd at Raleigh, North Carolina’s Hopscotch Festival on September 11th, also with Public Enemy, Tortoise, Kylesa, U.S. Christmas, Harvey Milk and tons more. Weedeater will be dropping plenty of new material from the upcoming album on these shows, which will lead directly up to the recording of JASON… THE DRAGON with Steve Albini, finally.

Weedeater have been pushed to their limits over the past twelve months. While it’s been a year of heavy and successful touring for the band, it was also a year of catastrophic physical injury to this seemingly invincible trio. Leading off with Dixie Dave Collins’ shotgun accident which spawned the brutal “Nine Toe Tour” earlier this year, and continuing shortly after that with drummer Keko tearing his meniscus after returning from said tour and requiring surgery. Both of those accidents prevented the group’s two previously scheduled meetings with Albini. The group’s latest installment of injury includes guitarist Shep breaking his pinkie finger while on tour in Europe this July alongside Black Cobra and Saviours. Luckily, Shep can still riff with his cast so the European tour and the recording session were spared.

These accidents have forced the band to push the recording for their now hard-earned upcoming full-length back several times now. Initially scheduled to take place in January of this year, then again in April, the trio will now step into Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio this September 15-19 to hammer out their mammoth 4th full-length JASON… THE DRAGON, their second release for Southern Lord Recordings.

Hailing from Albany, NY, Addicted To Pain has been unleashed onto the metal scene, releasing a four-track self-titled E.P. for metalheads everywhere to devour. Leo Curley (vocals, guitar), Bob Horvath (bass), and Gregory Nash (drums) make up this truculent trio. They describe themselves as “vintage, manly metal.” They also proclaim their sound is, “of ’80s era first-wave thrash.” After giving this E.P. a listen, I can attest to those remarks are correct! The first track is “Hear N Now.” Immediately I thought of Metallica upon hearing the vocals set in. It’s an energetic song. It’s straightforward metal, sounding kind of like a modernized ’80s thrash song. Next up is “Trust Me.” It’s intense, bludgeoning your ears with a certain brutality, a brutality that makes metalheads want to get up and scream with music. “Abigail” is third on the list, and following suit of the previous tracks, it delivers a blaring sonic punch! It’s fast, and has an old-skool feel to it. To wrap up the E.P., “Going Going Gone,” is yet another fiery assault! And it’s even a bit catchy. I can imagine this band having an explosive live show. For an E.P., this was quite an onslaught.

Canvas Solaris are back with their latest instrumental opus IRRADIANCE, a labyrinthine experience of odd metre rhythms, avant-garde themes, disjointed riffs and technical solo passages, in other words, prog metal! To say that IRRADIANCE is more accessible than Canvas Solaris’ previous works is really not saying much, as the album falls pretty much in line with what we’ve come to expect from the band, but there is a marked effort to keep things crisp and a bit more melodic this time around, with tracks such as “Adaptive Optics,” “Conveyance Of Flux,” “Soliton (Emergence From Dispersion)” and “Vapor Chasm” able to retain listener interest despite the eccentricities. Excellent production and precision performances from the guys keep things tight and surprisingly stimulating at times. In the end, Canvas Solaris are a very technically adept unit who make albums for a select few, and if you’ve enjoyed the band’s output in the past it’s reasonable you’ll find IRRADIANCE to your liking. Interesting but definitely off the beaten path.

Oh. My. God! With bassist Byron Stroud (Fear Factory, Strapping Young Lad, Zimmer’s Hole), drummer Bob Wagner (Econoline Crush), guitarists Ian White and Terry Murray, AND to top it off, Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory, Ascension Of The Watchers, G/Z/R, Ministry) on vocals — this is truly a legendary setup! This was all made possible when the band Caustic Thought (comprised of Stroud, Wagner and White) hosted a reunion show at the Cobalt Hotel in Vancouver in 2008. It was this event that catapulted them into what is now City Of Fire. The name of the band is actually named for Vancouver, explains Bell: “I have always loved Vancouver. During this session, my eyes were intensely aware that Vancouver is vibrant with life, like a raging fire.” This album features 11 original tracks, three bonus tracks and a video. You really couldn’t ask for more with a debut album, and let me tell you, this album really kicks ass! The opening track, “Carve Your Name,” kicks off the album to soaring metallic heights! Bell has a growling, brutal voice (reminds me a bit of Rob Flynn from Machine Head.) But he’s not always commandeering vocal ferocity. There are moments when a softer (soft for metal of course — which we still know has heaviness to it!) voice takes over. This is actually how the second track, “Gravity” opens. The transition from a straight-up heavy song like “Carve Your Name,” to a slightly more mellow, more flowing song like, “Gravity” is just so seamless. The whole album is this way, which shows that these gentlemen have expertly crafted this album! The next track, “Rising” begins with a smooth and poignant guitar piece, which then segues into a full blown metal song. In fact, several songs commence with a striking guitar section. Further into the album, the song “Dark Tides” stood out to me. Living up to the “darkness” in the title, the song elicits a spine-chilling feeling as eerie sounds evade from the background. Overall, this is an album with wide appeal. Simply if you like metal, and have respect for some of the genre’s most esteemed musicians, you will like this. To get a good sampling of this album go with “Hanya.” It’s heavy, catchy and easily gets you in a headbanging mood.

Alex Masi does the “jack of all trades” thing on new album THEORY OF EVERYTHING, his first since 2006. Handling all aspects of the project including songwriting, recording, production and instrumentation, this is a solo project in the truest sense of the term. Alex is known primarily as a shredder, but his depth of musical knowledge and adroit technical capabilities make him far more than that. Listen as Alex renders beautiful melodies on opener “Theory Of Nothing,” hypnotizes with exotic Middle Eastern rhythms and searing leads on “Ladies Of The House,” tackles a bit of futuristic fusion on “Scratch The Meat” and lays down some funky atmospherics on “Jam On Haunted Hill.” There’s a cool Jeff Beck meets Shawn Lane vibe throughout the album, most notably on “Queen Of Headf*ck” and “Have A Talk With God,” Alex always mindful of injecting diverse influences and a masterful vibrato into the proceedings. Only weak aspect of the album for me is the use of loops and sampling, which often keep the drum patterns dance beat simple, but otherwise this is an excellent album that is required for Alex Masi fans and recommended for those who would enjoy an experimental excursion into world-class instrumental guitar bliss…
