-Kiss City Tour Guitar Picks

[Note: This is from a Kiss Army newsletter. – Tim]

“Forget the white picks! These are the Collectors’ Collectibles!” — Paul Stanley

You rocked with Kiss on the historic Sonic Boom Over Europe Tour. Now own the ultimate tour collectible — Kiss commemorative city tour guitar picks! For the first time ever, limited-edition Kiss city picks were made for each tour stop. These special Kiss picks feature the country’s flag with Kiss logo, city and date of show on the front side and band member’s signature on the back.

Only a very small quantity of these Kiss city tour picks are left from each show and are now available exclusively at KISSpickworld.com.

“The new custom tour city guitar picks are a special addition to our usual arsenal of Kiss picks. We had just a few to throw out onstage each night of the European tour. I told my guitar tech to save a couple for me!” – Tommy Thayer

Each pick is limited to a maximum of only 200 made, and they will never be made again! The only remaining picks are the ones that were not thrown out to the crowd by Kiss or kept by the band members for their own collections. To put how limited these picks are in perspective, note that a normal Kiss tour pick is produced by the thousands, and in some cases, tens of thousands during the course of a tour.

There is also a bonus guitar pick for each city that includes a Kiss concert photo and signature alternating between Paul or Gene’s. Collectors will also note that this is the first tour in Kisstory in which Kiss has used the German Kiss logo on their tour picks!

“I love the way these picks look! What a great souvenir from each show. I threw these out every night when we’d come out to bow before the encore.” – Eric Singer

Paul Stanley’s guitar tech, Fran Stewart, told us that once people realized how rare these picks were, local crew and stage hands were taking them from the mic stands before Kiss hit the stage. The techs then resorted to handing the picks directly to the band members while they were on stage to keep them from being stolen.

Because these picks are in such demand, we expect bootleg versions will soon be circulating. Be sure to order directly from KISSpickworld.com to guarantee you’ll receive an authentic Kiss city pick, Only the genuine Kiss city tour picks include a bonus, foil-embossed Kiss Tour Guitar Picks collectible card, featuring the corresponding country’s flag and a statement of authenticity. These beautiful cards are collectibles in their own rights.

KISSpickworld.com was launched to give fans and pick collectors a central place to purchase genuine collectible Kiss tour picks without fear of buying fake or bootleg picks.

“Straight from the Kiss stage to you…the ultimate Kiss Tour guitar picks!” – Gene Simmons

-Shred Guitar Master Paul Gilbert To Release Third Guitar Instrumental CD

FUZZ UNIVERSE Out August 3rd On Shrapnel Records

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Paul Gilbert unleashes his third instrumental masterpiece on Shrapnel Records, August 3rd to the world. “FUZZ UNIVERSE is my third guitar instrumental album,” explains Gilbert. “Being a fan of pop music and rock bands, I am a reluctant convert into the art of instrumental rock music. But after touring with Joe Satriani’s G3, I witnessed firsthand the power of the electric guitar to take center stage and rock the audience. Playing my guitar-driven songs live was a blast! This discovery led to a huge increase in my touring as a solo artist. In the last couple of years, I’ve played nearly 150 shows all over the world, with my guitar leading the way.”

FUZZ UNIVERSE’s title is inspired by Gilbert being so immersed in the world of guitar it made him realize that he lives in a FUZZ UNIVERSE. “Every generation of guitar players has their own terminology for the rock guitar sound: Distortion, Overdrive, Gain, Crunch, Saturation, Drive, etc. For me, the word is FUZZ.”

Gilbert’s extraordinary talent of arranging/composing lends to the new music’s fresh melodies for songs that shows his true diversity and only in Gilberts words will you understand:

“On FUZZ UNIVERSE, I think I’ve taken a giant step closer to the ultimate rock guitar sound and playing of my dreams. I’ve used many of my signature techniques from Racer X and Mr. Big, but twisted them into new chords, grooves, and emotions.

“As always, my influences are diverse and not what you might expect from a ‘heavy metal’ artist. While I was writing the songs for FUZZ UNIVERSE, I was immersing myself in Bulgarian Female Choir music, Baroque lute and violin pieces, Johnny Cash songs about trains, cows, mules, and mining coal, the Bee Gees, and Ronnie James Dio. I mix all this into my head, and out came endless new ideas for my guitar to chew on.

“After several months of being locked in my writing room, I gathered my touring band together and headed to the studio. Jeff Bowders played drums. Craig Martini played bass. Emi Gilbert (my wife) played keyboards. And I bent the guitar strings until I couldn’t play anymore.

“As usual, there are no dramatic stories here. No heroin overdoses, motorcycle accidents, celebrity divorces, or band-member boxing matches. The emotion, drama, and power are all in the music. That is the universe that I want to live in.”

Paul Gilbert is regarded internationally as one of the greatest players in the industry. Starting his recording career with Shrapnel Records as a teenager in the late ’80s, Gilbert remains one of the most active guitarists from the original shred guitar scene. His rise to Platinum success includes a number one song with Mr. Big, and cult status as founding member of the legendary and highly successful underground progressive metal band Racer X.

-La Famiglia Superstar: Self-Titled Debut Out Now Through Emmeciesse Music Publishing

La Famiglia Superstar is a super band comprised of some of the greatest musicians of the hard rock scene!!

On vocals, talented and award winning Terry Ilous, (XYZ) also known for his work with members of Black Sabbath, Stevie Wonder, AC/DC, Rod Stewart. On bass the extraordinary and magical Marco Mendozza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, David Lee Roth, Ted Nugent), acclaimed by many as one of the greatest bassists of his generation. On drums, world renowned groove master drummer Atma Anur (Tony MacAlpine, David Bowie. Richie Kotzen), And last but not least on guitar, the amazing new Italian guitar hero, Steve Saluto (a recording studio genius).

The self-titled album produces the alchemy of four brilliant artists, working together to capture the soul of the listener.

From the opening track, “Never Enough,” a pure driving rock song with a super catchy melody that will please all Melodic Hard Rock fans, to the various paths of experimentation, (the smearing colored funk) “What We Gonna Do,” to the more modern rock track “Can U. Tell Me” which also gives us a compelling refrain. Airy sounds take over in the quiet “I Come Around,” which then turn into the profound and hopeful, “I Miss You,” a pure radio hit song. In this amazing and unpredictable album, you will hear what is probably the finest rendition ever recorded of the classic Whitesnake song “Here I Go Again,” and enjoy a total change of pace in the acoustic song “Closer.” This remarkable album, ends with an in-your-face instrumental track called “Vision,” full of overflowing riffs and groove. La Famiglia Superstar delivers a unique album that embraces the past , and creates a sound that mixes Melodic Rock, Funk and contemporary sound. This will agreeably surprise the listener, as it does not follow the typical pattern expected by musicians of that caliber and history, and will take you on a journey where Groove, Harmonies and heavy guitars all blend in a harmonious sound!

-Intense Millennium Records To Re-release Frontline Music Catalog

Intense Millennium Records is a partnership between Divine Metal Distro, Roxx Productions, and two additional individuals Josh Dieckmann and Sandy Scafedi. We have come together under this one umbrella to form a company that is dedicated to releasing fully licensed material from one of the most prolific group of record labels to exist in the Christian Metal scene, the Intense/Frontline/Alarma Records group. This will be the first time that many of these titles will have seen any form of quality release since their original releases back in the 1980s and 1990s.

Our first batch of releases is scheduled for release in November of 2010 and include classic albums from Vengeance Rising, Sacred Warrior and Bloodgood. All of our releases will be completely re-mastered to give these albums the best modern audio quality that is available today. As well each release will have brand new artwork based on the original cover designs, along with eight-page booklets complete with lyrics, and liner notes. When possible bonus material will be added as well.

The first five titles that will be released are:

Few albums can claim to have started a musical movement like HUMAN SACRIFICE. While thrash metal had already been well established by 1988, only a handful of bands had attempted to combine such fast, heavy music with lyrics reflecting faith in Christ. None of these bands had released anything more than demos or a couple tracks on compilations until this monster of an album came roaring onto the scene. Fusing fast riffing, driving bass and drums, hyper-speed bluesy lead guitar, and just enough melody to make things more memorable, HUMAN SACRIFICE did more than just introduce Christianity to the genre — it revolutionized the developing style of “Christian metal” in a way no previous band or album had done. Vengeance Rising raised the stakes and gave fellow thrashers a unique album that set the bar for future releases.

Vengeance Rising – ONCE DEAD
Where Vengeance Rising’s debut HUMAN SACRIFICE stormed onto the scene and created quite a stir, ONCE DEAD tightened the thrash attack into a well-oiled machine. While the band’s debut was experimental and diverse, ONCE DEAD was a snapshot of a band seasoned by touring and songwriting, with a more consistent approach that capitalized on thrash metal’s calling card — velocity. Vengeance Rising’s second album is rife with fast, thrashy anthems that take their sound to the next level, ramping up the volume, intensity, and energy even more. When other thrash bands were starting to slow down, Vengeance Rising took the opposite approach for maximum effect.

Sacred Warrior – REBELLION
The burgeoning Christian metal movement had several notable bands by the mid 1980s. None, however, took the progressive elements of pioneers like Queensryche and Fates Warning and combined them with the pure energy and heaviness present in much of the thrash metal of the time. Enter Sacred Warrior — a band that skillfully and successfully combined these two elements to create a metallic attack that rivaled many of their contemporaries, and stands the test of time as one of the greats of the era. REBELLION, the band’s auspicious debut, capitalizes on that potent mixture by offering up searing riffs, lightning fast solos, soaring vocals, and a rhythm section that thundered with authority.

Bloodgood – BLOODGOOD
Heavy Metal has been accused by its detractors as all sounding the same. While the mid-’80s saw a glut of metal bands cashing in on the style, many of which sounded the same as the next band, no one could accuse Bloodgood of being a sound-alike. Combining a melodic, classic heavy metal approach with the uniquely operatic vocals of Les Carlson, Bloodgood carved out its own niche in the metal scene by offering up listeners a potent mix of high-pitched vocal wails, melodic yet energetic guitar riffing, a tight rhythm section, and memorable songs that would stay with you for weeks. This powerful blend came shining through on Bloodgood’s self-titled debut album, and quickly set the bar for metal bands wishing to share their faith with the world.

Bloodgood – DETONATION
Bloodgood’s second album, DETONATION, was the perfect follow-up to their high-energy debut, and raised the bar even higher for faith-based metal bands. The fast songs were faster, the emotion in the songs was more intense, and the musical attack was tighter. The lyrics were also stronger, as the band took on some fairly unpopular topics like suicide and homelessness. Truly a landmark album in the scene, this classic contains the duo of songs “Crucify” and “Messiah” that showed what a real metal band could do with such emotionally charged subject matter and pull it off with such ease.

Beginning in January of 2011 we will unleash two classic Frontline titles per month. With such a vast catalog of titles at our fingertips we welcome any suggestions from you the fans in regards to what titles you would like to see released the soonest. There is currently a poll on our Web site, feel free to stop by and let your voice be heard.

New Worship CD From Neal Morse!

Hello everyone,

Greetings from Belgium! Right before we left for Europe, Neal completed a new worship CD! It is titled MIGHTY TO SAVE and has 13 tracks and is 75 minutes long.

Neal Morse – MIGHTY TO SAVE (Worship Sessions 2010)

It all started when I told him that there were quite a few songs that he, Julie Harrison, Wil and Jayda do at our worship events that we don’t have on CD. Then, he got excited and five new songs and kept thinking of more songs that would be good to record, including some German songs like “Heiliger Geist (Holy Ghost)” and one other (which I can’t spell!) so there are two songs in German for the first time on this CD!

So, that is the good news! The bad news is that for right now this CD will only be available at the worship events this summer. When we get home we will put it up on the Web site, but for now we just wanted to let you all know about it.

It features sparkling versions of well known songs like “How He Loves Us” and “Mighty To Save” as well as new original songs like “Only What You Do For Christ” and “The Center.” Neal played all the instruments on this one (even the drums) and it sounds great!

Here’s the track list:

1. How He Loves Us
2. Heiliger Geist
3. Mighty To Save
4. Only What You Do For Christ
5. Revelation Song
6. O Herr, Giesse Strome Des Lebendigen Wassers
7. Fall On Me
8. Who Am I?
9. Let Us Worship
10. The Center
11. I Won’t Turn Back
12. Spoken For
13. Hosanna

All Instruments by Neal Morse
Sax – Mark Leniger
Vocals – Neal, Wil and Jayda Morse; Julie Harrison, Marie Toussaint

See you soon at one of our worship nights we hope! God bless you,

Cherie Morse

The program kicks off in grand style with four performances culled from Johnny’s long-sought-after 1983 appearance at Canada’s Massey Hall. Leading his high-energy trio — Jon Paris (bass, harmonica) and Bobby T. Torello (drums) — with laser-like focus and fire-breathing intensity, the DVD opens with a blistering rendition of the Sonny Boy Williamson blues classic, “Unseen Eye.” Johnny would later release a studio version of this track on 1985’s SERIOUS BUSINESS [Alligator].

Next up is Johnny’s original mid-tempo ballad, “Stranger,” for which he plays a solo that is nothing short of a textbook of his virtuoso capabilities: with blazing speed and razor-sharp execution, Johnny’s ideas flow from one to the next with his one-of-a-kind unrelenting drive and inspired, passionate execution. The Massey Hall segment rounds out with Johnny’s original fingerpicked Delta-style blues workout, “Sweet Papa John,” and the rock ‘n’ roll classic, “I Used To Love Her.”

The next two tracks come from Johnny’s 1984 performance at the Capital Theater in Passaic, NJ, featuring the hard-driving shuffle “Mad Dog” (released on that year’s GUITAR SLINGER [Alligator]) and the slow blues workout, “Good Times Woman.” With his newly acquired headstock-less Lazer guitar, Johnny plays with mind-boggling speed and flawless precision.

Later that same year, Johnny performed in front of 100,000 people at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, with Paris and new drummer Tom Compton. Four tracks are included from this outstanding performance: “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Boot Hill,” plus incendiary versions of two of Winter’s signature tunes, Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” and Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” Shirtless and with his screamin’ demon tattoo in full view, Johnny prowls the stage like a possessed madman.

The fast rock ‘n’ roller “Lights Out” (GUITAR SLINGER) and Johnny’s old favorite, “Please Come Home For Christmas,” filmed in 1984 in New Hampshire, are succeeded by two videos shot for Alligator Records: the GUITAR SLINGER version of “Don’t Take Advantage Of Me” — which was, at the time, shown in high rotation on MTV — and a very rare and candid interview with Johnny, during which he plays unaccompanied electric guitar.

This DVD also includes rarely seen archival footage of Johnny riding his tour bus, talking candidly about his deep feelings for blues music, and relaxing backstage prior to a Swedish television appearance in 1987. Two songs are included from that performance: a rock-solid rendition of “Sound The Bell” (featuring subtle quotes from Freddie King’s “Sen-Sa-Shun” and “San-Ho-Zay”) and the hard-rocking shuffle that has become one of Johnny signature songs, “Mojo Boogie.”

The final segment of the DVD features two absolutely scorching performances from the 1988 Pistoia Blues Festival in Italy: the extended slow blues, “Early In The Morning,” and a lightening fast version of “Serious As A Heart Attack.”

“For guitarists interested in learning from one of the true masters of blues and blues/rock music, LIVE THROUGH THE ’80S provides an intimate and well-produced view of Johnny Winter’s genius as an innovative and endlessly inventive player, offering enough guitar pyrotechnics to last a lifetime. And for music fans, it is simply a priceless collection of riveting performances from a true hero of electric blues guitar.” – Andy Aledort, Guitar World

Band: Shot
Album Title: SHOT
Label: Rain Of The Rock Records
Street Date: 12/1/09
Genre: Hard Rock

“We wanted a name that matched our style. Something that really screamed to the audience: You’re going someplace. And you’re going through old-fashioned, hardcore rock and roll. Then someone said our music makes them feel like they were shot out of a cannon. And that was it. Perfect.”

That quote belongs to Justin Best, the enigmatic rhythm guitarist and songwriter for Shot, the best band you haven’t heard of. Yet.

Originally formed in early 2009, Shot honed its musical talents on the mean streets of New York City. With their face-melting guitar solos, huge Neanderthal-style drums, and searing vocals, Shot’s aggressive style harkens back to the elder gods of arena rock and roll. Indeed, Shot draws inspiration from across time and genres to help them on their sacred mission: to thrust hard rock back in to the mainstream. Born from under the underground, the band’s over the top live show and dedication to creating kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll has already entertained crowds as large as 800, destroyed guitars, and singlehandedly caused buildings to collapse. The boys have become fixtures on the New York music scene, and the Shot army continues to grow.

One listen to Shot’s first album, released in December 2009, reveals precisely why Shot has earned the admiration of its fans and the respect of its critics. With its radio ready sound. Shot is bound to please even the most demanding rock and roll aficionado. Whether it’s the fan favorite rock anthem, “Don’t Come Round Here,” the do-what-I-want “Axegrinder,” the trippy Aerosmtih-on-speed rock jam, “In The Streets,” or the lighter-raising “I Won’t Leave You Here,” the E.P. is quickly becoming a classic in the resurgence of New York rock ‘n’ roll.

Shot’s first E.P. is now available on iTunes, Amazon, and in direct distribution markets.

Band Lineup:
Billy Sioux – Lead Vocals
Justin Best – Guitars, Vocals
Hector Marin – Lead Guitar
Roach – Drums

Band: Serial Obsession
Label: Indie
Street Date: April 12, 2010
Genre: Hard Rock

Serial Obsession, the N.Y.C.-based hard rock band has returned with a full-length follow-up to their self-released 2008 E.P., SEXY BUT USELESS. The disc received positive press from both print and online magazines such as Fireworks in the U.K., Dangerdog.com, lehighvalleylive.com, and Glitzine.net to name a few plus getting airplay on internet stations like Firestormradio.com, WDHA in Jersey, jango.com and the Clear Channel produced New artist radio channel. In 2009 Serial Obsession produced a video for the tune “Grey” which was saw much traffic on YouTube.

The band, consisting of Shawn Sugrue (vocals/guitar), Mike Suozzi (guitar/vocals), Jason Rosin (bass), and T. Motts (drums) has spent the last year honing their craft on stage both locally and regionally and writing new material which leads us to SHOTGUN OPERA. Serial Obsession has put together a 10 song collection of music that covers the Rock N’ Roll spectrum from the Hard hitting opener “All The Way,” the radio friendly “Follow You Down,” and old school guitar driven tracks like “So Cold,” “Can’t Believe It’s Real,” and “Half Cocked.” Throughout the disc the band craftily blends both modern and classic rock influences with interesting results like “Dear Abby” and “Edge Of The Blade.” Other tunes like “Inside Out,” “Costa Rica,” and “No Surprise” are examples of how Serial Obsession blend radio friendly melodies with arena rock power. Serial Obsession is preparing to make some big noise in 2010! So sit back and turn it up to 11 and enjoy… SHOTGUN OPERA.

“The production is top-notch, crisp, and clear, and better than expected for a self-produced albums, not doubt a tribute to Serial Obsession’s talent and professionalism. On an otherwise excellent album, only ‘Follow You Down’ and ‘No Surprise’ seemed dodgy but, not to worry, still sound great and fit well with whole work. Serial Obsession’s SHOTGUN OPERA is prime American melodic hard rock and, in my humble opinion, the album they were destined to make. Their time has come. Strongly recommended!” – Dangerdog.com

“You will hardly find a dull moment in this tight production, even for an independent release the sound and the musicianship is top notch. Is refreshing for the band to continue climbing the ladder and carry on from their successful E.P. and now with a solid hard rocking album stapled on the ground, let’s hope the group gets the recognition they deserve. As for you the readers, recommended to any Hard Rock fans new or old, you are bound to find something here that will satisfy your rocker hungry frenzy. Check them out and support the band!!!” – My Global Mind

“…THE TIME OF NO TIME EVERMORE sees the Dutch band achieving what much hyped (especially in retrospect) ’70s bands like Black Widow and Coven never could: a visionary blend of hard rock, psych rock, acid rock, and even art rock, dripping with obsessively detailed satanic ritual.” 4/5 – All Music Guide

-Suicidal Angels Premiere Track, Post Sonisphere Footage; Interviews Available

The members of Greek thrash quartet Suicidal Angels recently released their new album SANCTIFY THE DARKNESS in North America through Sonic Unyon Metal. The album, which was released in Canada and the U.S.A. on June 22nd, 2010, was released in Europe by Nuclear Blast in late 2009.

Today, Stereokiller.com has premiered the track “Beyond The Laws Of Church” from SANCTIFY THE DARKNESS; check out this scorcher here: http://www.stereokiller.com/SuicidalAngels

Suicidal Angels have been very busy in 2010. After a European tour supporting Overkill, the band then did their first ever headlining tour of Europe, with support from Canada’s Cauldron and Sweden retro metallers Enforcer. The band completed work on their upcoming third studio album in June, and also recently played the Sonisphere Festival in Athens, Greece on June 24th along with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, something which was a dream come true for the band.

Footage from Suicidal Angels’ performance at Sonisphere Greece can now be viewed online at:

“Thursday, June 24th. About 12 o’clock and even before we hit the stage you are out there, rooting for us and ready to wreck the place. And that’s what you did…,” stated Suicidal Angels guitarist Nick. “From the first note, you were banging your heads, moshing, beating the sh*t out of each other, screaming your lungs out! We haven’t felt more excited before and you could see that in us. We want to thank everyone who was there; it was and forever will be, an honor, to open that festival for you. Until next time, Thrash ‘Till Death!”

Suicidal Angels will be taking part in Thrashfest 2010 this November and December. The tour, which is already being called the “thrash metal tour of the year,” also features Kreator, Exodus, and Death Angel.

“…they offer some of the most genuine-sounding old-school thrash you’ll hear in 2010. There are no death, black, or -core influences popping up here; these tunes are all blue-collar ragers that smack of Razor, Dark Angel and Destruction.” – Decibel Magazine

“Lots of catchy riffs here, some tight rhythms and fast syncopation, all hallmarks of the great thrash bands who were able to play at breakneck speeds.” 4/5 – Stereokiller.com

“They’re taking their favourite moments and using them as the impetus for creating new favourite moments… If you need some authentic, neck wrecking, rhythm guitar chugging, riff-tastic thrash, this is your band.” 8.5/10 – Hellbound.ca

“They have taken all the elements that constitute the best of the genre, drawn on their influences from the architects and innovators and injected their own personal styles to create a high-energy, blistering release full of head-banging, mosh pit anthems.” – Metaleater.com

-Dewey Beach Music Conference Offers Fresh Perspective On Industry Conferences

TRENTON, N.J. — Nestled in the seaside town of Dewey Beach, DE, the Dewey Beach Music Conference (DBMC) packs the punch of a monster music convention into a noticeably smaller radius.

The 2010 edition will take place September 30 through October 2.

As a smaller conference, every detail counts and it is evident in the caliber of talent that has consistently showcased at DBMC in the past five years. “Many of the artists we’ve selected have gone onto become internationally recognized performers so the level of talent speaks for itself,” said Vikki Walls, co-founder and director of the conference.

With a little research, those words ring true as there is a long list of high caliber performers that have graced the DBMC stage, most notably Melody Gardot, Halestorm, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Parachute, and Zach Myers from Shinedown, to name a few.

Equally as impressive is the long list of industry elite who have recently served as panelists and speakers. From Matt Pinfield (Columbia Records, Sirius Radio) and Joe Cuelo (VP of Music Supervision, MTV) to Shelly Yakus (Engineer, Tom Petty, John Lennon) and Paul Reed Smith (Artist and Founder of PRS Guitars), every corner of the music business is covered at DBMC.

This environment, in turn, provides industry professionals an excellent discovery ground for new artists.

In addition to its three nights of showcases, DBMC hosts two convention days, which include demo and mentoring sessions, a tradeshow, and industry meet & greet events. The mentoring and demo listening sessions are a jewel of DBMC, allowing artists valuable one-on-one time with industry pros.

“We pride ourselves on being the most ‘musician friendly’ conference out there,” said Walls. “This is the only event that offers free badges to all showcasing bands and all bands that submit for consideration. Our focus is on the musician and offering up-and-comers a great environment to learn and get their names out.”

Dewey Beach sits on a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay. The result is a casual, laid-back vibe mirroring a beach vacation. All performance venues are within a few blocks walking distance of the main conference area. No cabs, no hassle, no venues that are hopelessly disconnected from the center of activity. That center of activity, The Rusty Rudder, possesses an intimate and friendly atmosphere. Registrants interact with panelists, speakers, exhibitors, musicians, and professionals from all aspects of the music industry without any pretension.

Registration for DBMC includes full access to panels, mentoring sessions, clinics, demo listening sessions, the trade show exhibit, a conference directory, a compilation CD and goodie bag, and four separate VIP parties where up-and-coming artists and industry experts co-mingle over free food and drink at one of several different outdoor beach clubs. All showcases are free to the public.

-Notorious Underground Journalist/Musician Ryan Bartek Unleashes His Entire Discography As A FREE DOWNLOAD

…the following is a statement from Mr. Bartek…

In the spirit of “Independence Day,” I hereby offer my ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY for FREE — no strings, no catch, no shoddy iTunes wrangling — SIX ALBUMS, ONE BOOK & the legendary “PAN-TRIBAL SOCIALIST MANIFESTO.”

This includes…

A.K.A. Mabus – LORD OF THE BLACK SHEEP (L.P., 15 tracks: 2006)

Sasquatch Agnostic – COMPLETE MAMMALOGRAPHY (three E.P.s & 41 tracks: 2007-2009)

Jack Cassady – THE REAL MAN IN BLACK (L.P., 14 tracks; 2008)

& PDF files of the classically cult

“The Big Shiny Prison” (2010)

& “The Pan-Tribal Socialist Manifesto” (2006)

Before I continue further, let it be known that any missing items will be released later this year, including the cult underground film “Dadbot: The Motion Picture” (2004) and a reissue of my first book “The Silent Burning” (2005) on 9/11/2010.

Currently I am in the Northwest (PDX, U.S.A.) working on two new records (Jack Cassady & Sasquatch Agnostic) and preparing for the European sequel of “The Big Shiny Prison” which will take place Summer 2011 alongside a guerilla acoustic tour. Any interested parties please contact me in terms of me interviewing you for this book or simply weird avenues for me to explore, odd people to meet, etc.

I’ve never been to Europe and simply cannot wait… But it is very expensive and I am very, very poor. However it’s just a matter of funding & it looks as if everything is on track. Even if it’s a one-way ticket & a passport, I’m showing up next year. To hell with starvation — I want Paris…

AHEM… Back to the topic at hand…

Finally being released in any official form is the long lost A.K.A. Mabus record LORD OF THE BLACK SHEEP (2006). The first of its mutant breed in Detroit, A.K.A. Mabus was an experimental grindpunk outfit that burned fast & hard for a year of psychological warfare before imploding.

This is the first time the album has ever been freely available, despite numerous copies floating the file-sharing, basement troll circuit. It’s the album I killed myself to make throughout my early 20s — a turbulent five year course of false starts & flake musicians. When we finally came out swinging we found ourselves a tad too late & eons ahead of our time. Alienating everyone instantaneously, we were quickly rejected by the uniform punk scene & detested by those way too “true metal” for their own good.

A.K.A. Mabus ended up playing dozens of dive-bars amongst lazy Godsmack imitations & Lamb Of God clones, leaving every venue scratching their heads or running for cover. We came, we saw, we slaughtered — but always to an audience of maybe 12 people.

We recorded the debut album Easter Sunday 2006 and it was scheduled for release on 9/11/2006, but after endless personal apocalypse & band in-fighting I threw in the towel, hit the road & wrote “The Big Shiny Prison.” The rest is history, and this early history is now yours, FREE.

LORD OF THE BLACK SHEEP is drenched in true sweat, true fury & raw as a condom made of broken glass. I sincerely Hope you dig it.

The Sasquatch Agnostic COMPLETE MAMMALOGRAPHY includes three E.P.s — the flagship THUNDER OF THE YETI, the lethal grind karaoke sessions IN THE CATACOMBS OF CHARENTON & the world’s first Zen Buddhist Grindcore album GRINDHARMAGEDDON. Combined they render a 41 track leviathan sure to ruin it for everyone.

The idea of Sasquatch Agnostic was simple — to create a savage trainwreck of noise so ear-piercingly insane that 99% of humanity would lunge for the stereo killswitch within 30 seconds of exposure. Just some deranged, obscure thing you’d get in a tape trade from one of the basement trolls. Then things got a little more serious.

Thus, Sasquatch Agnostic is now culminating here in Portland with a tight live lineup & an extremely focused “real deal” album in the works.

And, of course, THE REAL MAN IN BLACK.

Quite frankly, the Jack Cassady album is the best thing I’ve ever done. Sure to manufacture career suicide in the eyes of every “grimmer then thou” stereotype, this acoustic album was written primarily on the road. Panhandling songs & coldhearted whiskey tunes for audience of the moon alone.

THE REAL MAN IN BLACK features completely reworked covers of classics by Cramps, GG, Cash, KMFDM, VNV Nation, Pink Floyd, NIN, Charles Manson & others + a slew of original material.

In the near future I’ll be re-recording half of this + a dozen new tracks for the looming follow-up GHOSTNOMAD LIVES. I will then be embarking on a guerilla tour of the European Union as Jack Cassady Summer 2011 and simultaneously working on a new book, the follow up to “The Big Shiny Prison.” Which goes without saying that…

Also available, of course, is the extreme road journalism saga “The Big Shiny Prison” as a Free E-Book PDF file, which features 100’s of interviews & a jaw-dropping roll call of some of the greatest underdog musicians in the U.S.A.

315 pages, 606 hours on greyhounds & over $10,000 spent, not a single label or publishing house would touch it with a 20,000 foot pole. Thus, I spread it around the underground for free. And you know what? Not a single dissatisfied customer. More info: http://www.myspace.com/ryanbartek

And for even greater career suicide, I’ve also dropped the notorious “Pan-Tribal Socialist Manifesto” (better known as “The Mabusvanian Conspiracy”). This is a PDF file — a 56 page propaganda manual of lunatic design that outweighs the U.S.A. PSYOP version 1000 fold. The “Manifesto” was the tongue-in-cheek-but-still-not-really ideological backbone of A.K.A. Mabus. No one got the joke, but that’s ok. Maybe you will. Posted is the OMEGA VERSION, with two additional Requiem’s completed early 2010.

Luckily you can’t be convicted as a sex offender for brain rape.

Any torrent freaks I’d appreciate help in getting these around.

Thanks to any and all for the Support,

–Dr. Ryan Bartek, Benedict Badoglio,

Il Propagandist & Jack Cassady

-Projektfest’10 Announces Recession-Proof Ticket Prices; Adds Voltaire To Lineup

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — As a result of tough economics times, Projektfest’10 — set to take place in at the Trocadero in Philadelphia the weekend of July 30-31 — has been revamped to be much more wallet-friendly, with ticket prices being reduced from the already-low price of $39 to just $10.

“It’s quite simple: It’s the best thing for me and it’s the best thing for fans,” said Projekt founder Sam Rosenthal. “I received feedback from fans that the economy is really tough, and although they’d love to attend Projektfest, the $39 ticket price plus travel expenses are a bit much for them.”

Although the price reduction may seem drastic, Rosenthal saw it as a better alternative than taking the route of many major summer tours and cancelling the festival altogether. Projektfest is as much about the connection with fans as it is the music and many have already made travel plans from across the country.

“If I kept the price at $39, there is a large group of really wonderful (and no doubt fabulous-looking) people who won’t be at Projektfest,” Rosenthal said. “This was not good news because wonderful and fabulous-looking people enjoying each other, enjoying great music, having fun in a big party atmosphere is what makes Projektfest wonderful. I knew I needed to change something and lowering the price and consolidating the entertainment is a win-win decision: they have the opportunity to attend Projektfest at a price that doesn’t hit their wallets so hard, and I have the satisfaction of seeing all of their wonderful and fabulous-looking selves at the event instead of being sad, lonely, and perhaps even mopey due to their absence.”

The entertainment has also been consolidated, leaving a few changes to the already-announced schedule. The revised Friday night Trocadero lineup is The Twilight Garden, Unto Ashes, Black Tape For A Blue Girl (featuring Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls), and — just added — Voltaire. The Saturday day stage has been replaced by an in-store at Digital Ferret Records, with Platform One. Most of the Merchants will be at the Trocadero on Friday Night.

The festival is now All Ages, and the cost is $10 or free with the purchase of a Projekt CD.

Projekt is America’s premier independent label specializing in intense music in the darkwave, shoegaze, ethereal, ambient, and darkCabaret genres.

The first Projektfest was held in 1996 in Chicago, where the label was based. Rosenthal took a break from the festival after 2002 to focus on raising his son, but after touring with Black Tape For A Blue Girl earlier this year, the festival-itch returned and Rosenthal began making arrangements for its return.

-Black Skies: Tour Update + New Show Added

North Carolina doom trio Black Skies, who kicked off their U.S. tour July 1st, are currently demolishing the masses with a new lineup, new songs and a high energy live display of sonic power they’ve built their name upon. Founding members Kevin Clark and Michelle Temple are joined by recent recruit, ex-Des Ark drummer Tim Herzog.

Said Michelle from the road: “The our is going great! In Pittsburgh, Chicago and Iowa City where we’ve played before and people have seen the band’s various lineups, the new material has been very well-received, some saying it’s our best yet! This was our first time as a band to Columbus and Madison. Both shows went really well and we plan to make these regular stops on future tours. We’ve made new friendships with some great bands as well. My personal favorite so far was Rebreather from Youngstown. Awesome guys and amazing band! We have the night off tonight (July 6th), our only day off during the 24-day tour, so we’re going to find a good spot to camp somewhere then it’s off to Denver to play with Black Lamb! We’re looking forward to getting back at it and playing every night until the tour ends in Nashville. We all feel very grateful for everyone’s support and for the ability to be able to do this!”

Check out live footage of Black Skies earlier this spring at the Milestone in Charlotte, North Carolina. (note: footage does not feature Tim Herzog):

-October Tide’s A THIN SHELL Set For U.S. Release

Candlelight Records today confirms September 28 as the North American release date for A THIN SHELL, the new album from Sweden’s October Tide. Currently featuring guitarist/founder Fredrik Norrman (Katatonia), vocalist Tobias Netzell, drummer Robin Bergh, and session bassist Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry, Carnal Forge), the album is the band’s first in ten years and follows the 2009 reissue of their debut, RAIN WITHOUT END (Candlelight).

Mixed/mastered at Black Lounge Studios in Sweden and featuring artwork from American photographer/graphic designer Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia, Testament, Death), A THIN SHELL delivers what fans have anxiously awaited from this treasured band. Seven doom-laden and emotive songs that are every bit as heavy as they are catchy fill the impressive recording that officially closes the band’s self-imposed, decade-long hiatus.

“I have wanted to get October Tide back together for some time,” reveals Norrman. “When we decided the time was right, ideas for new songs surprisingly came together nicely. Many sleepless nights were involved, with lots of coffee of course, but the songs were written in flow one after another.”

Discussing the recording process Norrman notes, “we started recording in March of last year. Jonas (Kjellgren) liked what he heard and offered to get it into the (Black Lounge) studio’s schedule even though we didn’t have a label yet. What was meant as a side project so long ago is now my main project and I am very proud of it. We only hope people enjoy it as much as we do.”

Formed in 1995 by then Katatonia guitarist Norrman and Katatonia/Bloodbath vocalist Jonas Renkse, October Tide quickly made a mark with two albums recorded and released during the years 1997 and 1999 (RAIN WITHOUT END and GREY DAWN, respectively). Much of the band’s music was written during a short break up of Katatonia which later proved only temporary as the band would reform and continues today; their latest album NIGHT OF THE NEW DAY features work by Norrman. October Tide would not perform live during this short period of activity and few interviews with the members were granted despite praise from both media and fans. The band, until reforming in late 2009, would maintain a cult status throughout the doom/metal community.

Decibel Magazine calls RAIN WITHOUT END “a peculiar album. It reminds of past and future Katatonia albums yet, it’s entirely unique in vibe and riff assembly. October Tide’s slow to mid-paced doom/death stuns… Renkse and Norrman using counterpoint, build/release tension and melody to peerless effect.” EBlogger Lonely Ghost Transmissions on its 2008 review of the album’s European re-release says, “RAIN WITHOUT END is without a doubt the greatest doom-death metal album ever.”

A THIN SHELL Track Listing
1. “A Custodian Of Science”
2. “Deplorable Request”
3. “The Nighttime Project”
4. “Blackness Devours”
5. “The Dividing Line”
6. “Fragile”
7. “Scorned”

Candlelight Records is distributed exclusively in the United States by Caroline Distribution, EMI Music for Canada, and Plastichead Music for the rest of the world.

-Gollum Added To Mayhem Festival Lineup August 3

Wilmington, North Carolina metal enigmas Gollum were recently added to one of the dates on this year’s edition of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. The fest runs from July 10 – August 14 and features over a dozen bands including Korn, Lamb Of God, In This Moment, 3 Inches Of Blood, Hatebreed and Shadows Fall. Gollum will perform on the Jagermeister Stage August 3 at the Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina. This marks the second year in a row Gollum find themselves on the bill for the prestigious event.

Commented the band on their addition: “We are thrilled to be invited back a for the second year in a row! Last year, West Palm Beach, Florida was so surreal and unbelievable! We really look forward to playing on the Jager stage at the Mayhem Festival again this year, this time in front of our home state crowd in Raleigh! Thanks to Jagermeister! We are currently planning a fall tour and are in pre-production for the our next record.”

Prior the Gollum’s performance at Mayhem, they will play a string of local shows. Confirmed dates thus far include:

7/09/2010 Rock Shop – Fayetteville, NC
7/10/2010 Reggies – Wilmington, NC
7/23/2010 The Pour House – Raleigh, NC
8/03/2010 Jäger Mobile Stage/Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival – Raleigh, NC

Gollum are currently touring in support of their critically-acclaimed THE CORE full-length released via Rotten Records on May 22, 2009.

“THE CORE is one of the most complex, sonic-scraped albums of the year because you
literally have no idea where these guys are coming from, much less where they’re wading towards through their distorted furrows…” — About.com

“…ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the future giants of progressive/eclectic rock/metal, if you will, a band worthy of taking place along the Opeths, Mastodons and Tools of the world – Gollum…”
— Imhotep

“…music this different that’s able to fire on all cylinders is the equivalent of expanding ones mind without the drugs.” — Way Too Loud

“…an incredible album full of hauntingly exotic metal tunes and outright death metal bludgeon.” — Away-Team

“This album is a brutal metal experience similar to something you might hear from Mastodon, possibly Isis, but then take those sounds and fly warp speed so far left of center that you’re fluttering around in your own dimension. Mixed with the traditional metal guitar tones and rhythmic soundings, we have Gollum experimenting with bizarre song structures and seemingly random mood swings that create a truly wondrous listening experience. ” — Ripple Effect

“While it certainly falls into the metal category, the band throws everything from vintage thrash riffs, sludge filled doom riffs and vicious vocal snarls at the listener and they make it work perfectly. Think early Megadeth meets Eyehategod…” — Unbound

-Japanese power metallers X Japan gave a surprise performance on July 1 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, as part of the charity event entitled “Yoshiki Foundation America Kick Off Party.” The surviving members of the band — Yoshiki, Toshi, Pata, and Heath, with Luna Sea guitarist Sugizo standing in for the late Hide — played an acoustic version of “IV” (a single that was originally recorded/intended for the “Saw IV” soundtrack). The event included a fashion show, a video about the charity, and a contest, and upon its conclusion the band filmed a video for the new song “Born To Be Free.” A new album is reportedly due out in August. The band is confirmed to appear at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago on August 8, and will then return to Japan for shows on August 14 and 15 at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama.

-I keep forgetting to mention this but I was kind of disgusted when I bought Ozzy’s SCREAM, and found a small ad inside saying anniversary editions of BLIZZARD OF OZZ and DIARY OF A MADMAN are coming soon, with some pomp along the lines of “The ORIGINAL versions restored in all their glory!” Um, yeah, weren’t Ozzy and Sharon the ones who decided to reissue those albums in 2002 with Bob Daisley (bass) and Lee Kerslake’s (drums) original parts redone by Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin, respectively? Kinda funny to tout a “restoration” when you were the ones who took ’em apart in the first place.

-Over the weekend we found ourselves in a mom ‘n’ pop music store, looking to buy a drum as a birthday present. I got to talking with the owner, a friendly older guy, and he asked what kind of music I liked. I said “old school heavy metal” and he goes, “Ah yes, so like Maiden and Priest?” I smiled and said, “Yep, those are two of my favorites.” Then I felt a tug at my elbow; it was my five-year-old looking up at me with big eyes, saying “Daddy! Daddy!” “Hang on a sec,” I admonished, but my kid interrupted again, saying “You like Kiss a lot, too!!” Good stuff.

-In my Steve Blaze interview last week, I referred back to an interview he’d done many years ago. A couple days later I heard from the guy who conducted that old interview — Mike McCarthy. He recognized what I was talking about and contacted me. His original interview ran in Ant magazine many moons ago. I briefly wrote for Ant and I hadn’t heard from Mike in a while, so it was nice to reconnect.

-In my current playlist: Lillian Axe – DEEP RED SHADOWS (Love & War Records), Orden Ogan – EASTON HOPE (AFM Records), Fosterchild – UNDER THE INFLUENCE VOL. 1 (indie), Various – METAL FORGE VOLUME TWO – A TRIBUTE TO AC/DC (Future).

Here’s something pretty unique — prog metal from Budapest! Dreyelands are one of the few Hungarian outfits that I’m aware of, but they imbue their debut album ROOMS OF REVELATION with the kind of meticulous quality you would expect from any of the current crop of bands hailing from more common locales. What makes ROOMS OF REVELATION such an interesting listen is the blend of styles on display here, ’80s melodic hard rock effectively fusing with modern progressive metal. Check out how this recipe plays out on accessible but considered tracks such as “Pretending,” “Way To You,” “Vain” and “Leaving Grace.” The musicianship is naturally adroit, but well-heeled with full listener engagement the goal. On the next release I would like to hear a bit more lead guitar peppered throughout to counterbalance the keyboards and I’ll be curious to see how Dreyelands further distinguish themselves from the multitude of groups mining similar territory. Overall a very impressive debut that should find favor with fans of Seventh Wonder, Circus Maximus and Vanden Plas.

SOULFLY – OMEN (A) Roadrunner, 2010
11 tracks, RT: 40:35

I have been listening to Soulfly for well over a year now, and have collected about four out of their six offerings. I can say without any doubt that this is their best CD yet. OMEN opens with the song “Bloodbath & Beyond,” which is a fast, upbeat and heavy song that immediately jumps into some heavy riffing and the signature Max Cavalera vocal delivery. Though it isn’t too memorable, but that may be due to the fact that it is the shortest song on the album, and doesn’t have many complex or intricate riffs, as we hear later on. The second song is my favorite on the album. I love the fact that Max always tries to have guest vocalists and musicians work with him. On track #2, “Rise Of The Fallen,” Greg Puciato from Dillinger Escape Plan sings nearly the whole song with Max, interjecting some vocal work in-between. I had never listened to DEP before, but Greg Puciato’s vocal delivery just blew me away. The song has some beautiful guitar work by Marc Rizzo, and will hopefully have you playing the song over and over; at least it did for me. “Great Depression,” the next song, has some fast picking for the verses, a very catchy chorus that is easy to bang your head to, and will make you want to get up and thrash about. “Lethal Injection” has another guest vocalist, Tommy Victor from Prong, singing with some very dark lyrics… essentially about someone dying due to a lethal injection and the fear and thoughts that consume them. It has a nice Rizzo solo about halfway through the song that really makes Soulfly different from some random metal band screaming about scary stuff and chugging the same riffs over and over. With Rizzo incorporating his melodic style and complex playing it really makes Soulfly different in a good way. “Kingdom” is another track that is very catchy and has some great riffs, and I would say is one of the better tracks on this album. “Jeffery Dahmer” is another amazing song, about the serial killer of the same name, which is interesting for a Soulfly song, but another great track. “Off With Their Heads” is pretty ordinary for Soulfly, because it consists of moderately fast-paced palm muted chugging and some cool melodic Rizzo scales. The next three tracks I would almost call bland, in the sense that they are similar to Soulfly’s style of music and after listening to the album constantly these are the songs you get bored with: “Vulture Culture,” “Mega-Doom” (reminds me of “Cavalera Conspiracy”), and “Counter Sabotage.” The album ends with the signature Soulfly instrumental, “Soulfly VII,” which is always a beautiful song. With very diverse guitar work, and softer more elegant riffs, and solos that are played in a more legato style, this really ends the album in a nice way. Overall, this album is definitely worth buying, and certainly worth listening to. Best Soulfly album yet.
