-IN DARK PLACES…1986-2000 — The Complete Discography Of Crimson Glory Out Soon!

[Note: This is from http://www.metalmind.com.pl/ . – Steve]

Metal Mind Productions presents the complete discography of one of the best and most influential prog-metal bands of the ’80s — Crimson Glory.

The exclusive five-CD box entitled IN DARK PLACES…1986-2000 contains all of their studio albums: CRIMSON GLORY, TRANSCENDENCE, STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL, ASTRONOMICA (two-CD). The box also includes bonus tracks, such as songs taken from singles, videos, live or demo tracks plus a 60-page booklet. All recordings are re-mastered using tube technology. Box is limited to 1,000 numbered copies and is a must-have for all fans of the band as well as for the lovers of the progressive metal genre!

Crimson Glory’s origin reaches the ’80s, when the band emerged with a dazzling combination of early Queensryche style, fascinating guitar melodies and distinctive, emotive vocals. The lineup, consisting of Ben Jackson (guitars), Jon Drenning (guitars), Jeff Lords (bass), Dana Burnell (drums) and Midnight (vocals) recorded two albums — CRIMSON GLORY and TRANSCENDENCE, both bringing the band a large number of devoted fans. The unique musical mixture, followed by a characteristic image (all band members wore silver masks) marked the beginning of a prog metal legend. But the band did not wish to be captivated in only one musical style. With their third album, Crimson Glory reached far beyond simple power metal musicianship, replacing it with complex, precise songwriting, controversial both in sound and structure. STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL turned out as an epic musical experience, filled with elements borrowed from prog metal, as well as blues and hard rock. For some fans the band explored far too commercial regions, but others greeted Crimson Glory’s evolution enthusiastically. Unfortunately, after the release of their third L.P. the group stepped down from the scene for six years. It wasn’t until 1997, when Jon Drenning and Jeff Lords decided to reunite Crimson Glory. Ben Jackson’s return was a great start to the process; however it was soon clear that this trio will be the only remaining members of the original lineup, as vocalist Midnight was at that time not interested in recording a new album. Drenning, Lords and Jackson had a tough decision on whom to set as a replacement for the charismatic singer. The final choice was Wade Black, whose vocals sounded much more powerful and aggressive, brining a totally new quality to Crimson Glory’s music. After adjoining ex-Savatage drummer Steve Wacholz the band was ready for a definite comeback. In 1999 ASTRONOMICA saw daylight. The album proved the band’s great form, being both a nod to the past as well as updated for the present, retaining some of the classic guitar harmonies with a slightly more dynamic approach. Although soon after its release Black left the band to front Seven Witches and Leash Law, Crimson Glory did not cease to exist. On May 2010 the band announced that a new singer, Todd La Torre, had joined the band. La Torre made his first (and as yet only) public appearance with Crimson Glory at ProgPower USA X as one of seventeen guest performers paying tribute to Midnight, the band’s original singer who passed away in 2009. The band is currently working on their new material.

Metal Mind Productions will release IN DARK PLACES…1986-2000 on August 23rd in Europe and October 5th in the U.S.A. (via MVD).

-Update: Crimson Glory Further Comment On News Of Metal Mind Productions’ Upcoming Release Of Five-CD Box Set

[Note: This is from BraveWords.com. – Tim]

Crimson Glory wishes to formally address the announcement made by Metal Mind Records regarding plans to release a box set featuring the band’s discography:

“Crimson Glory does not recognize nor sanction the new CD releases or box-sets made by Metal Mind Records (Poland). They are producing our CDs illegally and thus have ZERO rights to market, promote, advertise, release, distribute or sell any of our material; therefore they have ZERO rights to make any profit from our image, likeness or music.”

This has been an ongoing battle between Crimson Glory and Metal Mind ever since Roadrunner Records took yet another step in blatantly disregarding the band’s legal requests to cease and desist all involvement with Crimson Glory by illegally selling the rights (which they did not possess) to the Polish record company in 2007. It is a glaring example of what a shambles the music industry has become, and it is crucial to the band that their fans recognize the reality of the situation: Since Roadrunner’s involvement with Crimson Glory nearly 20 years ago, not a single cent generated from the production, sale, or publishing of ANY Crimson Glory record has been returned to the band.

“We have become disenfranchised from our own music,” says lead guitarist and founding member Jon Drenning, “with everybody making a profit from our efforts but us! As a group of hard-working dedicated musicians who have now given 25 years of our lives and hearts to this band and this music, it is beyond heart-breaking to watch these companies deliberately break the law and profit from selfish and downright criminal actions. This music is our passion; creating each record has been a labor of love, and what’s happening to us and our music right now is frustrating and insulting.”

Drenning adds, “We wish to make it perfectly clear to our friends and fans out there, all over the world, that these and any other albums or releases are not being produced or distributed with our permission, and that the money they wish to spend on our records is money that we as a band have earned but will never see until this matter is properly resolved. While we appreciate our fans wanting to purchase our material, it’s imperative that everyone out there recognizes that in doing so, they are only helping to make a criminal richer. In the meantime, Crimson Glory is presently negotiating with other labels regarding the remastering, re-releasing and future distribution of all of our material, and anything to do with the band regarding album releases, tour dates, promotional material etc will be shared via official press releases and the Crimson Glory MySpace and Facebook pages ONLY.”

“CRIMSON GLORY RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT OUR FANS DO NOT PURCHASE ANY MORE ILLEGAL CDS!”

-Lillian Axe: Ronny Munroe In, Derrick LeFevre Out

[Note: This is from http://www.lillianaxe.com/ . – Tim]

Love & War Records and Lillian Axe welcome Ronny Munroe as the new voice of Lillian Axe. As of August 1, 2010, Ronny Munroe, formerly the lead vocalist of Metal Church, will join Lillian Axe as a fulltime member replacing departing vocalist Derrick LeFevre as lead vocalist of Lillian Axe.

The members of Lillian Axe wish Derrick LeFevre nothing but the best of luck in his future endeavors. Unfortunately Derrick could not commit to the rigorous touring schedule that Lillian Axe prides itself on to this day.

When Ronny Munroe takes the stage, he has the crowd’s attention. His unique vocal style sets him apart from other singers because he brings something extraordinary to every song. Ronny is an in-your-face performer, consummate professional, innovative lyricist and songwriter who fuses melody with hard hitting rock in a way that will take your breath away.

Lillian Axe founder and guitarist, Steve Blaze says, “We met Ronny in Seattle playing a show together two years ago. My first impression was ‘damn he’s tall!’ After watching him perform, I thought to myself how amazing a vocalist and presence he was. I always keep in the back of my mind great talents when I see them, and Ronny was one of those guys. During the three days we spent together in New Orleans rehearsing and getting to know each other, I was amazed how well he fit in as a human being as well as a band mate. The true talent is only half the game; the person is the other. Ronny has it all. Having Ronny as a writing partner and performing partner is something I am very much looking forward to!”

Bassist Eric Morris agrees, “I am looking forward to what a vocalist like Ronny can bring to the table. I think he will add a whole new element and catapult our music into a brand new fan base as well as satisfy the die-hards.”

-Triumph’s Classic Anthem, “Lay It On The Line,” Featured In New Adam Sandler Movie, “Grown Ups”

Actor Adam Sandler has always had a knack for including standout classic rock tunes in his movies. His latest flick, “Grown Ups,” is no different, as Triumph’s hard rocking “Lay It On The Line” is included in the movie, which opened nationwide June 25th.

Also, the official Japanese release of their new “best of” set, Triumph: GREATEST HITS: REMIXED, hit the Land of the Rising Sun on June 23rd.

GREATEST HITS: REMIXED was released in the U.S. and Canada on May 18th, and throughout Europe during May as well. These 14 tracks of anthemic metal have never sounded so good, as they were all recently re-mixed by Rich Chycki (who has recently worked with Aerosmith and Rush). The set also includes a previously unreleased recording — “Love Hurts” — which will be the lead-off single from Triumph’s GREATEST HITS: REMIXED.

“We have been planning this release forever,” says bassist Mike Levine. “For years, Triumph fans have been demanding that we give them a fresh greatest hits package and they are going to love this one.”

Also included in the set is a DVD, mixed in 5.1 audio, that features eleven promo and live videos in widescreen (plus additional unreleased videos for “Child Of The City,” “Blinding Light Show,” and “Love Hurts,” and footage of the group’s 2008 induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame).

The deluxe two-disc package is housed in a six-panel digi pak — including a 20-page color booklet, complete with liner notes, lyrics, and chockfull of vintage photos.

Whether you’re a long-time Triumph fanatic or a new convert, you have never heard the group as crystal clear and loud n’ proud as you will throughout GREATEST HITS: REMIXED. “GREATEST HITS: REMIXED rocks like no other Triumph set,” declares drummer Gil Moore. “This is the definitive Triumph collector’s edition.”

-Former Members Of Yes And Toto Return With A New Band

YOSO To Release Debut Album July 2nd Europe & July 23rd U.S.A. On Frontiers Records

HOLLYWOOD, CA — The term “Super-Group” describes a band rising out of two of the most creative bands of the past 30 years: YOSO is formed out of Toto’s brilliant lead vocalist Bobby Kimball and the creative force of former Yes members, Tony Kaye and Billy Sherwood, thus equalling the magic of Yes with the voice of Toto. However, YOSO is much more than a combination of two classic rock groups. The band’s debut album ELEMENTS will debut July 2nd in Europe and July 23rd in the U.S.A. on Frontiers Records. This long awaited release comes with a bonus live CD where the band plays some old and new classics. This musical blend presents a fascinating combination of the sound of Yes (90125/BIG GENERATOR era) and Toto, with a very interesting and original sound that truly encompasses the styles.

Even with the band’s two diverse heritages, YOSO intends to become its own identifiable entity in a very short time. YOSO’s mission is to make the next decade one where their music will stand the test of time holding up alongside their classic rock roots.

“YOSO was started when I suggested to Bobby Kimball we should write some new music and form a band,” recalls Sherwood. “We had been working together on various tribute projects that I was producing and one thing lead to another. Before too long we had five songs in the can and were well on our way to making a record. That is when we started thinking seriously about taking it to the next level. Once there was a few songs underway the concept grew into the band we now have, YOSO.”

YOSO’s lineup was later rounded out with two amazingly gifted musicians: Johnny Bruhns as the guitarist and background vocalist and Scott Conner on drums, percussion and background vocals.

ELEMENTS track listing includes: Yoso; Path To Your Heart; Where You’ll Stay; Walk Away; The New Revolution; To Seek The Truth; Only One; Close The Curtain; Won’t End Tonight; Come This Far; Time To Get Up; Return To Yesterday. Bonus live CD: Yoso; Rosanna; Owner Of A Lonely Heart; Walk Away; Good For You; Yes Medley (Yours Is No Disgrace/Heart Of The Sunrise/South Side Of The Sky/Starship Trooper/I’ve Seen All Good People); To Seek The Truth; Hold The Line; Cinema; Gift With A Golden Gun; White Sister.

REBORN IN FIRE: With a wide selection of powerful new material the album features some of the world’s leading voices in metal. Titled REBORN IN FIRE the album also features the incredible talents of the Australian singers featured on the debut, and incorporating the celebrity guests the album will clock in with eight singers. The album has features on Zak Stevens (Savatage), Mike Vescera (Loudness), Steve Grimmett (Onlaught), Carlos Zema (Outworld), Sean Peck (Cage) and the three incredible voices from the debut that you have. All performances are incredible. This is the first time Zak Stevens has done anything in the power metal style since Savatage and he agrees, Savatage fans will definitely see this as a return to form.

Zak Stevens is one of the feature artists on the upcoming album REBORN IN FIRE. After rising to legendary status as lead singer for Savatage and Circle II Circle as well as Machines Of Grace, Zak is featured on a full-length song on the album. Zak’s vocals were recorded in Tampa, Florida by Mark Prator, who engineered the Savatage albums EDGE OF THORNS and HANDFUL OF RAIN. The album was mixed and mastered at Frontiers Studio in Sydney, Australia.

From Zak: “It’s an understatement to say that I had an amazing time working on the new Empires Of Eden CD. Stu Marshall is a super-talented recording musician who really knows how to get the best performances out of the artists he works with. Stu asked me to write my own lyrics and vocal melodies to the song I appeared on (‘Prognatus Ut Obscurum’). That’s exactly how I like to do things, and that really allowed me to bring out more of myself on the composition. As a result I was able to give an all-round stronger performance, there’s no doubt about it. Working with Stu was a fantastic experience for me. His vision for the overall spectrum of the album was stunning. I learned a lot… and that’s what it’s all about in the world of music and artist collaboration.”

Chris Ninni is one of the surprise stars of the melodic metal scene, sounding like a hybrid of “John Farnham / Joe Lynn Turner,” Chris’ incredible range and power have added a pure melodic touch to Empires and is sure to showcase Chris as one of the finest rock voices on the scene today.

Mike Vescera is one the feature artists on the upcoming album REBORN IN FIRE. Mike’s incredible voice has appeared on multiple albums for Yngwie Malmsteen and with Japanese metal giants Loudness. Mike is featured on a full-length song on the album entitled “Of Light And Shadows.”

Empires Of Eden // Band Bio

Empires Of Eden represents a powerful voice in aggressive contemporary power metal. With a list of collaborators spanning several countries and a wide range of musical disciplines, this studio project is a veritable dream team of uncompromising artists cooperating in a framework which allows them to bring their finest talents to the table.

While Empires Of Eden has been created as a labor of passion by virtuoso Stu Marshall — of Paindivision and Dungeon fame — the central philosophy is to give all the musicians as much freedom as they need to produce the best work they are able to. Drawing on influences as diverse as Helloween, Gamma Ray, Iron Maiden through to Cacophony and Arch Enemy, Empires is a no-compromise shred laden adventure that will excite guitar heads and metal fans alike.

Marshall leads an all-star cast of players, singers and writers who over the years have proven themselves to be some of the most exciting performers in metal today. Including stars of the heavy metal scene like Zak Stevens (Savatage / Circle II Circle), Mike Vescera (Yngwie Malmsteen / Loudness), Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper / Lionsheart), Sean Peck (Cage) and Carlos Zema (Outworld).

Empires Of Eden also showcases three of metal’s finest voices. Vocalist Mike Zoias is a powerful operatic force who can combine the classic, finely crafted tones with a fire rarely experienced in metal vocalists today. Louie Gorgievski, whose fire-breathing style combines a unique power and brings a passionate Dickinson-style vocals to the project. Louie is current vocalist with the band Crimsonfire and has proven he is a must-hear voice for all fans of high-powered vocals. Completing the vocal talent is Chris Ninni. Chris is one of the surprise stars of the melodic metal scene, sounding like a hybrid of John Farnham / Joe Lynn Turner, Chris’ incredible range and power have added a pure melodic touch to Empires and is sure to showcase Chris as one of the finest rock voices on the scene today.

While the initial framework for the songs has been created by Marshall, all singers have been instrumental in creating their own lyrics and melodies. This provides a wide range of flavors to Empires Of Eden and again highlights the collaborative spirit that the project is built upon. Marshall has contacted many of his friends and respected musicians to add their magic to the recording.

Under other circumstances, such an ambitious allocation of free reign might result in a directionless melee of self-indulgence. However when taking into account the specific individuals chosen by Marshall to cooperate in this project, it’s immediately clear that they share a disciplined and visionary approach that drives them towards the same goal. Strong, soaring melodies and well crafted chorus’ reign supreme through everything that Empires Of Eden is.

-Flamenco Guitar Master Benjamin Woods Of The Band Flametal Releases New CD HEAVY MELLOW Featuring Steve Stevens, July 6th, 2010 On Flametal Records

“It’s not hard to believe that Ben Woods might have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical virtuosity. With dark, feral eyes and fingers blurring on the guitar, it’s easy to imagine him at a crossroads cutting the deal” – East Bay Express~

HOLLYWOOD — Benjamin Woods and his monster creation Flametal will release their latest masterpiece HEAVY MELLOW July 6th on Flametal Records. This album embraces the metal-works of Slayer, Megadeth, Kiss and the Scorpions to name a few. “This is a Flamenco Guitar tribute album to some of the great Metal masterpieces,” says Woods. “It is definitely a different album from the other Flametal releases and is more of a solo effort that is a very powerful to play live. Although the songs are very dark, everyone gets it, even your Mom.”

Woods is a new breed of virtuoso and a speed metal guitarist from the start. By a twist of fate Woods gear was stolen by a junkie, leaving him with only a Spanish Guitar to practice on. This was the defining moment that ignited a passion for Flamenco Guitar. After spending years studying and performing authentic Flamenco, Woods created the genre-bending group Flametal, earning him an international reputation as the master of Flamenco and Metal. Playing Metal without a pick, or distortion would seem impossible to most, but through his training and creativity, Woods is the first and only musician to successfully combine real Flamenco and Metal. Here he pays tribute to some of his favorite metal tunes, played in the Flamenco idiom, with traditional accompaniment. “I had to use all my Flamenco knowledge to play these metal favorites without losing the integrity so I picked great songs with great melodies. On some songs I sped up the tempo, dropped a verse or created a new solo version only slightly changing the arrangements,” explains Woods. “The King Diamond song was a great challenge to put into the 12/8 time Flamenco rhythm of Bulerias, and the solo was definitely fun, but a bitch to learn on the Spanish guitar. The Megadeth tune was difficult to create melodies from Mustaine’s vocal grunts and growls, but cool how it fit into the slithery rhythm of Tanguillos. I was very fortunate to have Steve Stevens do some nylon and electric guitar solos on my original tune ‘Cursed.’ It’s a raw preview of what the next original Flametal album will be with many great guest artists featured.”

Woods has built a substantial following through his years of touring and recording as HEAVY MELLOW unveils him to be a master musician with deep musical roots in metal, classical and Flamenco guitar. Woods is also one of the only American Flamenco guitarists to ever grace the pages of Spain’s national newspaper El Pais, and Spain’s number one Flamenco publication ALMA 100.

Woods’ raw energy combined with exotic and sophisticated acoustic playing and the talent of a new-generation shred-master is a much needed breath of fresh air to the instrumental rock genre.

Flametal’s new album HEAVY MELLOW is available for download on iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. For more information visit http://www.flametal.com/ or http://www.myspace.com/flametal .

-While Heaven Wept Live Album Details Announced

While Heaven Wept are currently working on the forthcoming release of their new live album TRIUMPH:TRAGEDY:TRANSCENDENCE – LIVE AT THE HAMMER OF DOOM FESTIVAL set for a November 2010 release date.

TRIUMPH:TRAGEDY:TRANSCENDENCE will be made available as a CD/DVD set courtesy of Cruz Del Sur Music, as well as a 2xLP set via a joint collaboration between Cruz Del Sur Music, Iron Kodex, and High Roller Records. The DVD portion will contain several bonus features that will be detailed after the band will finish the studio work on the masters.

The release is a stunning 24-track audio capture of While Heaven Wept’s performance at the Posthalle in Würzburg, Germany on February 6th, 2010. The final master will be later synchronized to the multi-camera pro-shot footage, resulting in the band’s very first DVD. This release is guaranteed to take all fans by surprise, seen the awesome quality of both audio and video materials.

The philosophy behind this release is twofold; First, it is an expression of gratitude to everyone who attended the show — who made it such a special, unforgettable experience for the band. Secondly, being that there are so many fans of the band who they’ve not been able to reach tour-wise, this record should help tide those fans over until While Heaven Wept can make it to their town.

In the words of WHW’s Tom Phillips, “The audio quality of this release is incredible — perhaps in some ways better than even VAST OCEANS LACHRYMOSE — along with the excellent energy of the performances and the excitement of the improvisations. The video is even more amazing, so expertly filmed and edited by our friends at Streetclip TV in Germany.”

Expect TRIUMPH:TRAGEDY:TRANSCENDENCE – LIVE AT THE HAMMER OF DOOM FESTIVAL to be an incredible live testimonial of WHV excellent musicianship and stage power, a release which will haunt your stereo and DVD player for many a night of relentless epic doom!!

-Atrocity Feat. Yasmin — New Album AFTER THE STORM North American Release Date Set For September 15th!!!

Attention, Atrocity fans — hot news! The brand-new album of Atrocity feat. Yasmin is entitled AFTER THE STORM, and it will be released soon in North America on September 15th. This is, without a doubt, a very special album based on a cooperation between the band and guest female singer Yasmin. Admirers of the legendary and just re-released CALLING THE RAIN E.P. won’t have to wait any longer. Atrocity is surely the only metal band which attracts fans from the metal scene as well as from ethno, folk and world-music genres.

Says founding vocalist Alex Krull: “Fans and musicians of the band have been waiting much too long for the continuation of CALLING THE RAIN. Now time has finally come and we just can’t wait to let our fans hear and enjoy the new songs. We are incredibly happy with the result. The songs contain great rhythms, the music is sounding very special and organic; moreover, the energetic vocals together with the mythological-based lyrics convey a magic atmosphere. Well, once more it’s time to take blinkers off! Just listen, and it will take you away!”

Below you will find more details in the official product information to the release AFTER THE STORM:

***Ethno meets Metal***

Atrocity are one of the most successful metal bands from Germany. In addition, the group is one of the most experimental and diverse music acts in the history of metal, because they have the courage to explore new musical horizons. At the same time, Atrocity stands for top-notch productions. With their previous studio effort, the longplayer WERK 80 II, the band entered the top 20 of the German Media Control Charts. Some time ago, the “Metal chameleon” decided to work together with vocalist Yasmin — no one else than the sister of front man and producer Alexander Krull — on a new project. This comes as no surprise, as the band already worked with the A-list vocalist in the mid Nineties. The result of this cooperation was the E.P. CALLING THE RAIN, which turned out as a forerunner milestone of the scene. The songs were a perfect blend of ethnic elements, world music and metal. Up to this point, this was especially for a metal group an unimaginable mix of atmospheric yet gripping musical diversity. The latest Atrocity Feat. Yasmin album AFTER THE STORM does not simply repeat the collaboration, but elevates the songwriting and production to a new level. All instruments were performed live and a huge amount of percussions allows for a tapestry of complementary rhythms. The driving and tribal-like beats are the foundation of Atrocity’s music and allows for an intense and fascinating atmosphere. The string instruments and vocals harmonize perfectly with the mood of the individual songs and with the whole music respectively. Besides wonderful atmospheric songs such as the title track “After The Storm” or the emotional “Silvan Spirit,” true rock songs like “Black Mountain” or the anthem “Transilvania” show a completely new side to a metal band. With the mystical songs “A New Arrival” and “As The Sun Kissed The Sky” or the music-turned-Celtic-legend “The Otherworld” Atrocity, together with the exotic vocals of Yasmin, takes the audience into a mythological world. The band featuring the singing siblings Alex and Yasmin switches to high gear with the catchy song “Call Of Yesteryear!” No listener will remain untouched. The music of Atrocity Feat. Yasmin can only be described with one word: unique!

Band: Hogjaw
Album Title: IRONWOOD
Label: independent – swampjawbeamusic L.L.C
Street Date: May 11th, 2010
Genre: Rock, Southern Rock

Web:
http://www.hogjawmusic.com/
http://www.myspace.com/hogjawband

Like a Four wheel Drive, Hogjaw, have taken the off-road into the music industry head-on. Blazing they’re own trail of rock & roll, Hogjaw, have brought back the sound of pure listening. Cranking tunes and bringing music back for the people that can be understood by all walks. With vocals telling stories, guitars blazing & drums thundering: Hogjaw’s record’s are going to come at you like a freight train of sound!

Hailing from the desert land of Arizona, Hogjaw is bringing in the rock from the Southwest. The quartet includes Jonboat Jones (vocals/guitar), Kreg Self (lead guitar), Elvis DD (Bass) & J. “Kwall” Kowalski (drums) deliver a dose of genuine rocking goodness.

Hogjaw was formed in late 2006 through the power of jamming… “when we realized what we had, it just snowballed.” Everyone in the band is standing friends from High School and with one common goal, rockin’, it became easy for the music to develop. With years of playing in label bands, touring afar, and playing beat-up acoustic guitars in and around the hills, these guys find their talents on a way of their own. It is spoken through the songs… and with support from everyone surrounding Hogjaw…. Things couldn’t be better for the group!

The band has had the opportunity to spend most of 2009 & 2010, traveling the States playing music from Major events, to playing Clubs and Bars with acts like Cowboy Mouth, Ratt, Helmet, Valient Thorr to Railbenders, Gin Blossoms, Jimmy Van Zant, etc. The album DEVIL IN THE DETAILS was in the top sales for ’08, ’09 & 10′ at CDBABY.com… Their videos have been in the top 10 at OurStage.com and also the record has been picked up by many European & English distributors with turn around sales. Locally the group recently had their CD acknowledged as top 5 record of the year by “you asked for it” at the Phoenix New times… Also with a nomination in the hard rock category for the Phoenix new times “summer of sound” concert series ’09.

Now with the second installment of the Hogjaw catalog, IRONWOOD. Two years after the first release (DEVIL IN THE DETAILS) the band is still on course. Singing songs that define the artists and keeping true to what they stand for. The sophomore record shows more growth from the quartet, which is what you would expect a group to do…

Give them both a spin and we hope you dig it as much as we all do in the HJ camp… Cheers to everyone and look forward to hearing back some feedback!!!

ELECTRIC CITY by Mike Campese

ELECTRIC CITY is the seventh solo release from guitar virtuoso Mike Campese. The 14 song, over 76 minute CD is filled with some of the most blistering guitar work Mike has ever recorded. The CD kicks off with a bang with the tune “Eleventh Degree” featuring some intense melodic shredding and jazzy harmonies. Just when you thought you heard some crazy guitar playing, Campese takes it up another notch with “Shred Machine,” which is just pure non-stop shredding done very tastefully. This is defiantly Mike Campese’s most heaviest CD to date, with the down tuned song “Heavy Thing” and the in-your-face progressive vocal tune “LandShark.”

Mike Campese really shows off his versatility with the indian inspired tunes like “Cruisin Across The Mojave” and “Camelryde.” Like each Mike Campese CD there is something for everyone, Campese does some pretty intense over-the-top guitar work, especially on the demonic arpeggio blistering tune “Over The Top,” which Paganini fans would love and the face melting tune “Napali Coast.” Mike does sing on a few tracks on this disc like on the epic tune “Kauai Blue,” which is loaded with lush harmonies.

Mike can really shred but he has a strong sense of melody that he is known for which can be heard on his catchy ballad “Closer To The Sun” that has some beautiful haunting melodies. Campese even gets a little funky on the tunes “Butterfingers” and “Punk Ass,” featuring some hip sassy melodies. The Mike Campese fans are going to love this Cd and it should bring him over the top.

Track Listing:
1. Eleventh Degree
2. Shred Machine
3. Heavy Thing
4. Cruisin Across The Mojave
5. Over The Top

8. Napali Coast
9. Punk Ass

-City Of Fire’s Self-Titled Debut Due Out August 24th

It was early 2008 when the Cobalt Hotel in Vancouver hosted the reunion of Caustic Thought, a popular local band that had not played together for twelve years. Little did bassist Byron Stroud (Fear Factory, Strapping Young Lad, Zimmer’s Hole), drummer Bob Wagner (Econoline Crush), and guitarist Ian White know at the start that this special evening would light a spark that would take this reunion further than they initially expected.

After recruiting guitarist Terry Murray, the four decided to rearrange, write and record new material. As the writing came together Byron reached out to friend and band mate Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory, Ascension of the Watchers, G//Z/R, Ministry) and the final member was found. The spark that ignited on that very special night among old friends had now become a spirited new band… City Of Fire was complete.

The band’s self-titled debut contains eleven energetic and melodic songs that reflect the band’s immensely talented musicianship. Three additional songs were recorded earlier this year adding to the album’s overall depth. Bell recalls of the early sessions, “I have always loved Vancouver. During this session, my eyes were intensely aware that Vancouver is vibrant with life, like a raging fire. This is where the name of the band came from. I was inspired like never before and I believe it shows.”

Musically, City Of Fire finds its roots in everything from metal to hard rock to punk, and boasts a more commercially-oriented sensibility; a sound reflective of the evolving maturity of its members and audience. Sonically hard yet groove heavy, the band has conceived a sound that distinguishes itself from the rest.

“Byron and I have always talked about music and realized that we had many similarities between us: the same music likes and dislikes,” Bell explained to popular music site Noisecreep. “Byron knew that I would love the music he and the guys were creating and he was right. When I first heard the music, I was excited by the sounds I heard.”

CITY OF FIRE will see U.S. release just as Fear Factory finish up their Canadian run of dates which will include their performance at Montreal’s Heavy MTL Festival where the band will appear alongside Megadeth, Slayer, Mastodon, Korn, Rob Zombie, Lamb Of God and more.

-Nocturnal Fear: New Lineup + Next Album Update!

Led by Michigan thrash institution Nocturnal Fear, the battle against false metal rages on! Outmanned and outgunned pockets of resistance continue to inflict serious carnage upon the enemy. From the frontlines, Nocturnal Fear reports: “Our perimeter is now fortified by ‘The Axes Of Death’ Chris on guitar and new ‘SpecialForces Kommando’ Warmonger on bass. That’s right! An alliance has been formed with the enigmatic nuclear-war bass-assassin Warmonger! The prophesied Circle Of Iron is complete!”

Even now, deep underground in their reinforced concrete blast-proof bunker, Nocturnal Fear plan their next onslaught, EXCESSIVE CRUELTY, again to be released by Moribund Records. “We shall emerge no sooner than this winter, STRONGER, FASTER, LOUDER, and HEAVIER to unleash an assault that will CRUSH the enemy into submission,” says the band. “Trendy false-metal scum are in for a rude awakening, for they have made a fatal error in miscalculating the resolve of the true legions of metal — Nocturnal Fear ‘bangers kill!!!”

A release date for Nocturnal Fear’s EXCESSIVE CRUELTY will be announced later this year. In the meantime, consult http://www.myspace.com/nocturnalfear and http://www.moribundcult.com/ .

-Votum Added To Metal Hammer Festival 2010

Polish prog metallers Votum recently confirmed their appearances at this year’s edition of the Metal Hammer Festival in Poland alongside Katatonia, Opeth, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside and headliners Korn (with one band still to be announced). The event will take place on August 27 at Spodek Hall in Katowice.

Votum formed in Warsaw in 2003. The band will unleash their second full-length, METAFICTION, in the U.S. on August 3 via Armoury Records. At once dark, somber and beautiful, METAFICTION was recorded at the famed Izabelin Studio in Poland and is a seven-track concept album that focuses as much on the music as it does the lyrics and visual art surrounding it. Votum’s concern is not of the particular style of music they play but rather the atmosphere pouring from within. For fans of Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Anathema.

“…METAFICTION is a progressive musical puzzle. A puzzle to a psychotic search. A mindgame; look for the pieces, connect them together and write the ending of the story.” – Power Of Prog Blog

-Yes, the new Halford song “The Mower” *is* pretty cool, if a little screechy, but I just can’t get over that title. A buddy of mine asked: “Really?!?! ‘The Mower’!?! Is this a late April Fools joke? ‘The Ripper’ & now ‘The Mower’?!?!” I admit, when I first read that title I wondered if “The Mower” would be part of an epic “Lawn Care Trilogy” along with “The Weedeater” and “The Mulcher.” Ah, I only tease because I love Rob Halford. Check out the song in the Knuckletracks player at BraveWords.com.

And speaking of the upcoming Halford album, MADE OF METAL, I wonder if the songs will truly be new recordings or if he’s planning to include some of the one-offs that have already been released, like “Drop Out” and “The Forgotten Generation” from METAL GOD ESSENTIALS – VOLUME 1 or “Fetish” and “God Bringer Of Death” from the RESURRECTION reissue. I’m hoping it’s a cohesive album of all new stuff.

-I pulled out Lillian Axe’s POETIC JUSTICE the other day, and after a quick perusal my 5-year-old asked, “Daddy, why are they all dressed like girls?” Ah, fashion.

-Neal found this — so blame him! This is horrible but funny:

Re: Ratt’s INFESTATION

I totally agree with your comments on Ratt and their album cover. I think they must have overthought that. But when you have that cool skeleton Ratt thing they use in artwork I think a plan on that with a bunch of those on the cover (animated or life like) would have been really cool. It would have been easy to come up with something better than what they chose. They have this great set of songs and their promotional aspects highlight all the wrong things. That cover does nothing to imply the contents of the album are so good or cool or rocking. I was also disappointed in their video for Best of Me. No one wants to see Stephen Pearcy sucking face with some girl… especially not with how much older he is these days… maybe in the actual 80s that might have seemed cool in a video. That and their minimal stage in the video made me think more about how far off things are for them now compared to their heyday rather than just thinking about where they are now in a positive sense. I would have liked to see them do something that would have been more energetic and inspiring both in a video and an album cover to really generate excitement and interest among current and even potential new fans. This is the rock band/guitar hero era… we are finally in a phase where the younger kids are more open to 80s style metal… the impression you’d want to give would be “COOOL!” and “AWESOME” not… “EWWW” or “WEAK STAGE”. I understand bands dont have the budgets they used to… but I think many of these bands still could do more than they do to update the cool factor. That is the stuff, along with the music that won many of us over back in the day… and those things tend to be pretty universally appealing to kids in certain age ranges… and kids (whether 10, 15, 20, 25 etc… are still people you’d want to win over… I would think it is easier to build some diehards in those sets than to win over people who already have an opinion of you from back in the day.

[Well said! Agreed 100%. I know we’re being hypercritical but we can do that since we’re fans. 🙂 The album is so strong that I hope it gets its due recognition, and that it gets “discovered” by some of the young ‘uns out there, despite that dang goofy artwork. – Tim]
