A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio

High Voltage Festival, Saturday 24th July 2010

Proceeds to be donated to the Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up And Shout” Cancer Fund

On the 16th May 2010 Ronnie James Dio passed away and the world of music mourned the loss of the greatest voice of heavy metal.

Dio was a truly iconic figure in music, whose work with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and most recently Heaven & Hell defined a genre.

Heaven & Hell were set to be on the road in Europe this summer when news came through that despite the amazing progress he was making Ronnie wouldn’t be well enough to tour and those shows were canceled. But now, remaining members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice are set to play a one off show to celebrate his life and work. The band will be completed by Glenn Hughes and Jorn Lande who will both contribute vocals. Former Deep Purple / Black Sabbath star Glenn Hughes was a close friend of Ronnie’s for many years and performed a musical tribute at Ronnie’s funeral service in Los Angeles. Norwegian Jorn Lande is best known in the U.K. as the vocalist for power metal band Masterplan, he has also released many solo albums including a tribute to Ronnie. It promises to be a fitting celebration to a man that the metal scene owes so much.

“It’s going to be a very emotional occasion. Ronnie loved his fans like no-one else I know — and they loved him. It will be a privilege doing a gig in honour of his memory, and to help towards his charity. Above all, I hope it encourages people to have regular check-ups for this disease. Early detection is vital, and greatly improves the chance of a cure. I know everyone has heard that a million times before, but seeing one of your best friends die because we all think we’re immune from this disease, really brings it home. Do it for yourself, your family, your friends. Ronnie would be proud of you.” Love & Peace, Geezer Butler

Tony Iommi says “Ronnie’s passing has left a huge hole, we hadn’t anywhere near finished what we set out to do as a band together. He was so looking forward to the European tour and we hope this appearance will go some way to fulfilling that.”

The Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up And Shout” Cancer Fund Program Description

-Magic Circle Music Update

Dio’s contributions to heavy metal are profound and indisputable. He participated in no fewer than six of the most critically important hard rock and heavy metal albums of all time, including RISING, LONG LIVE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, HEAVEN AND HELL, MOB RULES, HOLY DIVER and THE LAST IN LINE.

Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer on May 16th, 2010. It is one of the greatest losses ever suffered by the heavy metal community.

Manowar and Magic Circle Entertainment have decided to honor one of metal’s greatest legends with MAGIC – A TRIBUTE TO RONNIE JAMES DIO, a new CD featuring Magic Circle Music artists and friends performing some of Dio’s most inspired work.

MAGIC – A TRIBUTE TO RONNIE JAMES DIO is especially poignant because Dio hails from the same fertile upstate New York soil as Manowar. “Heavy metal has lost a great artist and a true gentleman,” says Manowar bassist Joey DeMaio. “I had the privilege of being his friend and, along with other friends and admirers, we wish to honor him.”

Manowar contributes a powerful rendition of Dio’s signature song, “Heaven And Hell.” Jack Starr’s Burning Starr and the Magic Circle All Star Band (with Shmoulik Avigal and Joe Stump) contribute the classics “Catch The Rainbow” and “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll” and his cousin and former Elf guitarist David “Rock” Feinstein delivers a song inspired and written for Dio titled “Far Beyond.” The album is rounded out by several tenacious, up-and-coming bands, such as female-fronted HolyHell, featuring the voice of Maria Breon (called by many “The Female Dio”) as well as Metalforce, Awaken and Crosswind, all of whom embrace Dio’s legacy in their own inspired interpretations of his songs on MAGIC.

In tribute to Dio’s legacy, famous fantasy painter and illustrator Ken Kelly, the man behind many of heavy metal’s most classic album covers (including some by Manowar) has reworked his iconic Rainbow RISING artwork for MAGIC.

MAGIC – A TRIBUTE TO RONNIE JAMES DIO is from the hearts of these musicians. It is not only their privilege, but also their duty, to honor Ronnie by singing his praises while singing his songs.

MAGIC – A TRIBUTE TO RONNIE JAMES DIO will be released on Magic Circle Music’s online store Kingdom Of Steel on June 18th, in Germany on July 16th, in the U.S. and Canada on July 20th and further international territories in the forthcoming weeks. The album will also be available at the merchandise booth of all upcoming Manowar live appearances, starting at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 23rd.

Track Listing:
1) MANOWAR – Heaven And Hell
2) HOLYHELL – Holy Diver (Live In Norway)
3) METALFORCE – The Last In Line
4) MAGIC CIRCLE ALL STAR BAND – Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll
5) AWAKEN – I Speed At Night
6) CROSSWIND – A Light In The Black
7) DEAN CASCIONE – Never More
8) FEINSTEIN – Far Beyond
9) HARLET – Straight Through The Heart
10) JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR – Catch The Rainbow

HolyHell Confirmed For Metal Female Voices Fest In Belgium

Magic Circle Music recording artists HolyHell will take Belgium by storm for the first time ever at the Metal Female Voices Fest VIII at Oktoberhallen in Wieze, Belgium on October 24, 2010. The goth/power metal sensations have been racking up some pretty hefty worldwide touring miles over the last five years and the MFVF organizers sought them out as this year’s very special guest based on the band’s growing reputation as a stellar live act. HolyHell’s eponymous, full-length Magic Circle debut was released in the U.S. and Canada on June 8th and the band is also participating in the label’s forthcoming tribute CD, MAGIC – A TRIBUTE TO RONNIE JAMES DIO, with a monstrous live rendition of one of Dio’s all time classics “Holy Diver.”

MFVF is a Metal festival dedicated to female-fronted bands and has been running since 2003. It takes place every year in Belgium, most recently at Oktoberhallen in Wieze. The growing success of the festival comes from its unique concept, but also from past appearances by Epica, Nightwish, After Forever, Tarja and many others. This year’s lineup includes Arch Enemy, Revamp, Leaves’ Eyes and now, thanks to the fans, HolyHell.

-Destruction Returns To Nuclear Blast

Legendary German thrashers Destruction have just announced their return to the Nuclear Blast folds!

Comments main man Schmier: “Sometimes I really hate the business side of my job, we have been thru some very difficult decisions in the last couple of months. Now after some weeks of hard work, I can proudly announce that Destruction is back with Nuclear Blast Records!

“We really wanna thank AFM Records for the great co-operation in the last years! Cheers for supporting all our craziness, I know it wasn’t always easy folks!!

“Going back to NB feels like coming back home now, working with old friends is one of the biggest achievements you can have in this music business known as a ‘shark tank!’ Almost eleven years ago, Markus Staiger and his label made it possible for Destruction to come back in a strong way, those were some of the best years the band ever had!

“Hopefully this will be the last label change of the band’s career, we have returned to our home port again and it feels absolutely fantastic! We are working on a fast & furious new album that will kick ass in January 2011. Expect the roughest piece of THRASH you’ve heard from Destruction in many years!”

And A + R manager Jaap Wagemaker: “We are very stoked to announce that legendary German thrashers Destruction will be re-joining the nuclear family again! After a small stint with another label, the band around scene icon Schmier has made the decision to return to the their label home Nuclear Blast!

“Everybody knows that Nuclear Blast was the label that brought back the band with a bang with their comeback album ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE and the following tour they did with Kreator and Sodom. ‘Hell comes to your town!’ was a huge success for the band as well.

“After releasing several more CDs and DVDs the band decided to try something new, but over the years we have stayed in contact with both Schmier and Mike.

“When the time was right, we decided to sit around the table and realized that the future of both Destruction and Nuclear Blast should be a path we should walk together, and so Destruction is back home!! At the moment Destruction are hard at work to seal this deal with their most thrash sounding album for a long time! The future belongs to Destruction — the mad butcher has returned!!”

-Tribunal Records/Divebomb Records Update

Colossus Joins Tribunal; E.P. And Tour Forthcoming

In their early careers members of Colossus were in several formidable punk rock acts, but thankfully came to their senses and embraced their irrepressible youthful metal roots. Now, armed with guitars and beer they are storming across the tundra of central North Carolina to conquer the world. Colossus sound as if they were actually taking part in the original NWOBHM scene alongside Saxon, Diamond Head, Iron Maiden and Angel Witch in 1982, but cosmically (and fortunately for us) slipped through a wormhole winding up in 2010. DRUNK ON BLOOD spiritedly follows on the heels of their debut album, …AND THE RIFT OF THE PAN DIMENSIONAL UNDER-GODS, and only further expands on their love of classic heavy metal, fantasy, folklore, zombies, science fiction and ultimately laying waste to any and all who catch their enthusiastic and sweat-filled live shows. DRUNK ON BLOOD is for people who like to party and remember what it was like to make music for fun. When listening to DRUNK ON BLOOD your knobs most definitely should be cranked to 11.

Cro-Mags – ALPHA OMEGA Reissue In July

Street Date: 7/13/10

Divebomb Records has partnered up with Century Media Records to reissue one of the most overlooked crossover albums ever, Cro-Mags’ ALPHA OMEGA. Since the original release of ALPHA OMEGA in 1992 its creative origins have been long argued amongst the band members, and with so many turbulent rumors floating about it’s no wonder this record has neither been properly understood nor — even worse — acknowledged by many Cro-Mags fans. We, at Divebomb Records, remain unconcerned with the drama as we feel the music created during this time in the Cro-Mags’ career is some of the band’s best. Sure such a statement could be debated for years, but the bottom line is that ALPHA OMEGA is, in our opinion, some of the finest crossover metallic hardcore N.Y.C. has ever produced, period.

We won’t bore you with typical descriptions because the legacy of the Cro-Mags certainly speaks for itself. We’re confident this album warrants a rightful place in your collection — regardless of whose side of the fence you reside on — and we hope to finally bring this much-treasured classic back into the favorable light it has always deserved!

Thrash metallers Fatal Embrace hailing from Berlin, Germany, have just released their new album THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY!

To give you a glimpse of their blend of Berlin Thrash Metal Fatal Embrace has uploaded another song of their new album for your listening pleasure. Click on the band’s Web site ( http://www.fatal-embrace.net/ ) to check out “Nothing To Regret!”

THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY, the band’s strongest album so far, deals with the most extreme and horrible fears and pains of mankind, the deepest depths of the human soul, the eternal struggle between good and evil, the life consuming beast. THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY will take every metalhead on a trip to the battlefield of the armies of the undead and the darkness. The war between heaven and hell has finally begun.

01. (Intro) The Last Prayer
02. Wake The Dead
03. Nothing To Regret
04. Haunting Metal
05. Another Rotten Life
06. Empires Of Inhumanity
07. Into Your Face

10. Way To Immortality
11. Ravenous
12. Killers (bonus track)

The CD includes the Iron Maiden cover “Killers” as a bonus track!

Formed in 1993, Fatal Embrace is not a band you would accuse of jumping on a bandwagon because Thrash Metal seems hip again. In fact, these young men started out in the early nineties (remember that was the time when Thrash was dead) as a hard hitting metal band to praise the glorious days of the ’80s when bands like Slayer, Exodus, Metallica, Venom, Sodom and Kreator ruled the musical extremes. Fatal Embrace never compromised and over the years they released three albums on different labels. THE ULTIMATE AGGRESSION (1999), LEGIONS OF ARMAGEDDON (2002) and DARK POUNDING STEEL (2006). All of them pumped up with adrenaline, energy and power.

THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY is out now worldwide!

Order THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY for just 12,99 at http://www.emp.de/ !

Fatal Embrace will play the release show for THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY on the 19th of June at Club Halford in Berlin. Support comes from Bellgrave and Motor.

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Update

Band: The Royal Ghost
Genre: Symphonic Rock/Opera
Release Date: Out Now

It all started in 2005 when the composer Teddy Jonasson made up a story together with his two daughters for a “family musical” with five-six songs. In September 2006 he started working with the music and after writing 15 songs some people in the music business came and listened to the stuff. They were really impressed and told him to finish the work of the opera so Teddy kept on working. The music took him 14 months to finish, and the he wrote the lyrics for another six months. All together it’s 29 songs and a total playing time of 1h 45 min.

Together with producer Bengt Hilding he then started to get musicians and singers to the set. After this process Bengt worked with them in the rehersals to create the right majestic sound and in May 2009 the first appetizer concert was played. The success was huge and the people who was there went completely crazy.

Two months later the freelance conductor Ulf Wadenbrandt got in contact with Teddy and asked if they could do a recording together with the famous Swedish symphony orchestra Dalasinfoniettan, and so they did. In October they started their collaboration and it can be heard on six tracks on the CD. The second appetizer concert was played in December and the reactions was much the same as after the first concert.

Now the self-confidence have grown and it’s time for “The Royal Ghost” to hit bigger stages. Plans making the complete show on theatres are made. A smaller tour version planned, and an acoustic version for smaller scenes also been planned. All along this process Teddy’s been working on their MySpace page a lot, and the reviews from listeners all over the world are overwhelming. Many of them asking when the tour come to their town. Teddy’s already been asked to make a new rock opera and bands are asking for help making arrangements for their songs or even ask for new written songs. He is a rising name on the rock scenes.

A newspaper wrote about “The Royal Ghost” as the rock version of “Phantom Of The Opera.” And very much that is what this is all about. Creating a real rock opera with influnces from melodic metal/classical music/opera/folk music, with a good story together with it.

The music is composed by Teddy Jonasson, a new interesting songwriter. Together with very talented musicians and with the help of majestic producer Bengt Hilding, they have come up with something new and fresh, with a very original sound! The songs in the opera come from different genres within rock music, and to somewhat show the depth in the music, six different lead singers with different character have been used. Musically the vibe runs from very soft ballads to hard rock, with ingredients of folk/classic, and opera/singer-songwriter to old school heavy blues rock.

The story takes part in an old castle where the ghost and princess become friends to eveyone’s despair. A revolt breaks out between the people and the ghosts. You can imagine the story as a tale of the difficulties we are exposed to in our modern world. “The Royal Ghost” rock opera has been shown in two shortened concert versions, and the response from public have been overwhelming. Even on MySpace the response has been fantastic, and critics and listeners have given thumbs up from all over the world. The full version Rock Opera consists of 29 songs and a running time of 1 hour 45 minutes.

Band: Starfire
Label: Starfire
Steet Date: April 30th, 2010
Genre: Rock

Starfire’s music features catchy guitar work and ambient keyboards, which blend into a perfect combination for rock-pop, radio-ready tunes. With Lombard as their driving force, Starfire has created their own classic pop-rock influenced by such artists as Lenny Kravitz. The band has adopted a fierce, independent approach to recording albums that is everything but predictable, emulating legendary nontraditional artists such as Hendrix, Prince and Vernon Reid. Not satisfied to adopt any specific method or formula to create their music, Starfire prefers an out of the box thinking that allows complete artistic freedom in the studio.

Main guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist for Starfire, Dairenn Lombard, has been playing since 1986, writing since 1995, and recording since 1997. Taking what Lombard’s parents taught him in the 1980s to the next level, he moved forward to teach himself new techniques as a teenager throughout the 1990s, studying the work of Rush’s Alex Lifeson, Edward Van Halen, Yngwie J. Malmsteen and Mr. Big’s Paul Gilbert. In addition to arranging, composing and writing all the Starfire songs, Lombard engineered, mixed and mastered all of their albums. The production style that has worked best for the Starfire catalog takes from several influences by music producers including Vince DiCola, Ron Wasserman, Ron Nevison and Bob Rock.

Although Dairenn Lombard is the core of the band Starfire there are other members that support him in his efforts that carry as much importance.

Greg Pajer has been playing guitar for over 20 years. He graduated from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood with a Commercial Music Degree. Pajer has been playing professionally, performing, recording, music directing, and touring with numerous bands, singers, and songwriters.

Drummer Blake Paulson holds a BA in Professional Music from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Paulson was awarded Berklee’s distinguished Professional Music Achievement Award and has worked with artists from almost every major label and indie artists that have no desire to sign with a record label, artists who have sold 100 to 1,000,000 CDs and performers that have played small acoustic sets to jam-packed arenas.

Andrew James has been playing bass professionally for the last 10 years, and during that time, he has appeared in countless live shows, performed in numerous studio sessions, recorded a number of albums, traveled to many states, and rocked thousands of people worldwide on numerous stages.

With the diverse talents of Dairenn Lombard and the strong experience of the other members when Starfire performs live, the future looks bright with many musical projects on the horizon.

Band: Jon James
Label: Pound-O-Flesh
Steet Date: February 7th, 2010
Genre: Rock/Pop/Strut

Jon James has been actively performing since he was 12, and continues to this day in similar vein. Though he likes rock stars well enough, he aspires stubbornly to sideshow greatness. He is simply perverse in that way. He likes to daydream about hanging out with Dadaists in the days of yore.

Jon hails from northern Illinois and has long resided in Minneapolis. Since the die was cast, Jon has been involved with approximately one zillion bands, and currently juggles playing with precisely six (Tina Schlieske, Ali Gray, Johnny Clueless, Patrik Tanner & The Faraway Men, Mish Mash, Brat Pack Radio).

When he comes up for air, Jon likes to work on solo recordings. AU CONTRAIRE is his sophomore album. Jon likes loud guitars and big drums, but he’s also a sucker for bizarre noise and perplexing language. If pop music is bubblegum, AU CONTRAIRE is more akin to black licorice. Yes, both emanate certain sweet notes. But the latter lurks within enigmatic shadows, redolent with concentrated essences both unusual and unfamiliar.

It is, in a word, acquired taste. But rest assured — Jon has utmost faith in your sense of adventure.

In his tender youth, Jon was heavily influenced by Brit Invasion, Glam & Power Pop. As an over-schooled grown-up, he is now equally smitten with smart, melodic wordplay — from Dylan to Bon Scott, Leonard Cohen to Kurt Cobain, Warren Zevon to Wayne Coyne, Tom Waits to Jack White. In fact, if you can corner him, he’ll confess nothing shy of obsession with the written word; a steadfast conviction that lyrics are the heart of song. Some will tell you this is a crying shame, because it just so happens Jon is also a rather monstrous guitar player. They fear he is squandering potential glory. Try to ignore them. He is simply saving your ears so that you may revel in the laughter of your grandchildren.

Lately, Jon is conducting lots of research (read: wikipedia) on traveling medicine shows, the apothecary tradition, vaudevillian history, tin-pan alley, etc. — any similar institutions of old where people toured on a shoestring, penned ditties, filled parlours and dabbled artfully in potion & persuasion. He is formulating a theory that some precise combination of these arcane arts might serve as a much needed shot-in-the-arm for our beloved music industry; rock-and-roll in particular, lest it become ossified and inflexible. Even if he’s unable to distill a workable hypothesis, it’s clear these themes will be featured prevalently in his next CD. Stay tuned …

-The Body: Release Details Confirmed + New Track Available

As the official At A Loss Recordings release from Providence, Rhode Island’s The Body draws near, details on the release and on the band’s sinister plot slowly fall into place.

Already being dubbed as an incredibly original and ultimately creepy by those who have acquired an LP, the dense, diverse seven tracks on ALL THE WATERS OF THE EARTH TURN TO BLOOD could ultimately be one of the most twisted releases in recent doom metal history. While the main destruction caused by The Body is born of its two main members, the unit frequently join forces with other rogue assassins and collectives of musical militia on stage to bring their hymns to life. On ALL THE WATERS OF THE EARTH TURN TO BLOOD, the duo have teamed up with The Assembly Of Light Choir, adding a totally mind engulfing, spine-chilling and downright freaky twist to the band’s devastating doom.

View the album artwork, new band photos, live video and more at this location:

ALL THE WATERS OF THE EARTH TURN TO BLOOD is set to see an official CD release via At A Loss on July 27th, 2010. The LP version is already available from the band directly and via At A Loss mailorder, and a digital download version will also be available in the coming weeks. In support of the release the band will set out on a 2-3 month tour of The States beginning in late July. The full routing will be announced shortly.

2. A Curse
3. Empty Hearth
4. Even Saints Knew Their Hour Of Failure And Loss
5. Song Of Sarin The Brave
6. Ruiner
7. Lathspell I Name You

“… be prepared to look beyond the realms of traditional doom, or of conventional heaviness, because The Body are anything but traditional or conventional, and ALL THE WATERS OF THE EARTH TURN TO BLOOD just might be the coolest, weirdest, most original doom record EVER.” – Aquarius Records

INNERWISH – NO TURNING BACK (A-/B+) Ulterium, 2010

Now that Gus G. is a prominent member of Ozzy’s band, Greece should be getting some well deserved recognition for their excellent metal musicians, and hopefully Athen’s InnerWish will benefit as they are a vital outfit with plenty of artillery to deliver their explosive anthems to the masses. InnerWish excel at melding Halford-style riffs with Firewind’s sense of melody, resulting in hard chargers such as “The Signs Of Our Lives,” “Burning Desires,” “Save Us” and “Welcome To My World.” Vocalist Babis Alexandropoulos sings the band’s Christian lyrics with conviction over a cool bed of molten metal rhythms, guitarists Thimios Krikos and Manolis Tsigos injecting conventional but fiery solos into the proceedings. I’m hearing better production on a lot of recent releases and NO TURNING BACK is no exception, the mix clear and commanding. Okay, NO TURNING BACK doesn’t exactly scream originality, but when the execution is this good you may not be bothered. If these guys can maintain this energy and quality live I’m sure I’ll be seeing them very soon, I certainly hope so. Good stuff!

SECTION A – SACRIFICE (A-/B+) Lion Music, 2010

Section A return with a streamlined metal charger entitled SACRIFICE for their third outing and this one appears to be the charm. The title track starts things off and lets you know right away what you’re in for, Andy Engberg’s powerful vocals and Torben Enevoldsen’s ripping guitar work exploding from the speakers. Section A wisely blend in a good deal of melody with the metal bombast as evidenced on tracks such as “Lionheart,” “Land Of The Desert Sun,” “Days Of Sorrow” and “The City Is Falling.” I almost hear Section A as what Symphony X would sound like without the overblown prog elements, primarily due to Andy’s Russell Allen-esque vocals and Torben’s fleet-fingered excursions. New drummer Thomas Heintzelmann adds a potent percussive element to the proceedings, Circus Maximus’ Lasse Finbråten makes a welcome guest appearance for the keyboard solos and a crisp, punchy mix completes the excellent package. So there you go, a bit familiar in places but overall an exceptional release from this adroit outfit. Definitely worth seeking out for the melodic metal adherent.
