Hard rock guitarist Michael Schenker is a former member of UFO and a founding member of the Scorpions and the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). He is the younger brother of Rudolf Schenker, guitarist with the Scorpions. Schenker joined UFO under unusual circumstances. The band left the U.K. to play some dates in Germany. Their guitarist at the time, Bernie Marsden, forgot his passport and was unable to make the first gig. At the venue, UFO spotted Michael playing a soundcheck with the Scorpions and managed to persuade him into playing that evening’s show. And the rest is history… Eventually, Schenker decided he wanted to play his own music and not be a hired hand for another band. In 1979, he founded the Michael Schenker Group, and the band has been recording and touring as numerous incarnations ever since.

Author, clinician, drummer… Carmine Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group’s high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart’s backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Young Turks.” In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley’s first solo album and has recorded with Stanley Clarke and Pink Floyd. He also recorded and toured with Ted Nugent, Ozzy Osbourne, Blue Murder, and was the founding member of King Kobra. Fuel Records reissued Carmine Appice’s Guitar Zeus project in August 2009.

-Styx New CD Release News

[Note: This is from http://www.styxworld.com/ . – Tim]

Details of forthcoming REGENERATION, VOLUME 1 Announced

Styx is putting the finishing touches on the soon-to-be-released REGENERATION, VOLUME 1. Produced by the band and their long-time studio/live sound engineer Gary Loizzo, REGENERATION, VOLUME 1 contains six re-recorded versions of Styx classics, and one brand new song, “Difference In The World” (which is also available as a free MP3 download via STYXworld.com). The six classic tracks are “Grand Illusion,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Lorelei,” “Sing For The Day,” “Crystal Ball” and “Come Sail Away.”

In a recent interview with Doug Fox of the Daily Herald in Salt Lake City, UT, James “JY” Young said “We’re in the ultimate, final-polishing stages of it.” Look for the complete interview with Doug coming soon.

In addition to the CD, the band also plans to make REGENERATION, VOLUME 1 available on vinyl.

Additional information will be passed along as it becomes available. Keep an eye out for a sneak-peek of the album cover coming soon.

More info at:

James “JY” Young Confirms Track Listing for New Styx Album REGENERATION

Styx guitarist James “JY” Young has confirmed the track listing for Styx’s upcoming album REGENERATION. Speaking exclusively to journalist Doug Fox, JY said the album is “99 percent there,” and will feature seven tracks.

In addition to the new Tommy Shaw song “Difference In The World” (which has been available for free download at http://www.styxworld.com/ for a week or so now), REGENERATION will feature new re-recordings of Styx classics “The Grand Illusion,” “Come Sail Away,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Crystal Ball,” “Lorelei,” and “Sing For The Day.”

Young says that re-recording these classic tracks was harder than it may appear. “When you go back and try to do it, you say, ‘How DID we do that? What gear were we using and what gear was available for the engineer to use?'” The new recordings were also different from the originals in that modern technology allows bands to record in different locations. JY says the new tracks were recorded in at least eight different studios.

REGENERATION was intended for release already, but the guitarist says it has been delayed and will emerge very soon. “It would have been good if it had been completed before we got out on the road, but we didn’t quite get there for a variety of reasons,” he stated. “At some point, with every new thing that you create, there’s a point where you have to say it’s time to let go of this and it sounds pretty darn good.”

Though JY didn’t pinpoint an exact release date, Styx recently posted a video to its official Web site that said the album should be available in the summer of 2010. Though it’s unconfirmed for now, rumor has it that Styx’s fall tour dates will feature the band performing its classic albums THE GRAND ILLUSION and PIECES OF EIGHT in their entirety.

-Herman Rarebell Remembers Ronnie James Dio

“I knew Ronnie for quite some time — he often came to Scorpions shows over the years. Although he just passed away last weekend, I already really miss him. Hanging out with Ronnie was always fun and we always had a great time laughing and joking. Without a doubt, he will go down in history as one of the greatest singers in the world of heavy metal and hard rock. The best way we should remember Ronnie and to celebrate his life is to break out any one of his classic recordings from Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, or Heaven & Hell. Ronnie, you will never be forgotten.”

-Tarot’s Marco Hietala Comments On New Album, GRAVITY OF LIGHT

Marco Hietala, bassist/vocalist of the Finnish heavy metal band Tarot which he founded with his brother Zachary, offers some insight on GRAVITY OF LIGHT, the band’s eight studio album which was released on April 23, 2010 (Europe) and will be released on June 8, 2010 (North America).

“There’s no message that the listeners should take heed of on this new album. We just tried to put everything together in a way that would keep the some of the trademarks of the band, and at the same time show the inner growth and some new things. We try to keep the band dynamics and the groove of the seventies at the bottom of everything we do, then we dress it up in the metal harness of 2010 and use everything there was in-between as a source of nuances and such.

“The creative spark for the new album were ideas for songs I couldn’t get out of my head. We had so many we wanted to actualize. As far as musical guests on the album go, we had Mikko Mustonen do orchestral work on ‘I Walk Forever.’ The song itself is pretty simple so it was fertile for that kind of possibility. The result sounds very huge, which is as we wanted it especially at the end of the song. We didn’t go over the top in the mix with the orchestra in order to avoid too much comparison with Nightwish.

“I knew Mikko from his work with Northern Kings and he was happy to do this one when I asked him about it. Which song is the ‘masterpiece’ on the album? I think it must be ‘Hell Knows,’ where we went for something really heavy and gloomy, but at the same time wanted to bring a really fragile sense of being lost into the piece.”

GRAVITY OF LIGHT entered the Finnish album chart at #2.

Tarot will be performing in North America at this year’s ProgPower USA XI festival in Atlanta, Georgia in September.

-Joey Belladonna South American Tour Canceled

It is with deep sadness and regret that we have to announce the cancellation of my South American tour coming up at the end of this month. I love playing for the fans and the last thing I hate to do is cancel shows and disappoint my fans; without you I would not be able to live my dream as a musician. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control we have to announce the cancellation of the upcoming Belladonna tour of South America.

My team has been hard at work planning this tour with the promoters down in South America since January. With the recent earthquakes that have happened down there, we thought we would have to postpone or cancel the tour, but the promoters all scrambled to find new venues and we did everything we could to make this tour happen.

My staff has been hard at work trying to salvage these tour dates, but were unable to do so. I hope to see you all out on the road this summer when I am in Europe with Anthrax and the few select shows I have with my solo band Belladonna in America. More solo dates will be announced soon.

You can keep up to date on everything I am doing via my Web site http://www.joeybelladonna.com and my MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/joeybelladonna .

June 18th 2010 Releases

Mastercastle – LAST DESIRE

Promo page inc. streaming audio:

The ultra powerful Italian metal outfit Mastercastle return on June 18th 2010 with their second album LAST DESIRE. Led by the soaring vocals of Giorgia Gueglio, the gifted guitar work of Pier Gonella and the tight rhythmic interplay of bassist Steve Vawamas and drummer Alessandro Bissa, Mastercastle made a strong impression with their debut album; the 2009 release THE PHOENIX and are back with an even more impressive follow up.

LAST DESIRE takes a similar path to its predecessor yet sees the debuts neo-classical influences toned down a little and replaced with a straighter hard rock/metal sound making for a more rocking affair. The big riffs Pier Gonella is known for are here in all their glory and Giorgia Gueglio works her vocals into new areas on the new music, whilst the bass work and potent drumming are powerfully produced creating a thunderous sound.

The straighter hard rock style of the album is represented by opener “Event Horizon,” “Away” and “Cat-House.” Whilst the title track fuses a number of different elements from an almost thrash metal guitar riff to the hard rock edged chorus to make an original sound. Guitar fans will find a lot to enjoy in the instrumentals “Las Serenissima” and “Space Trip.” The former being a cover of the Italian ensemble piece “Rondo Veneziano” rearranged for rock guitar and sees the classical slant of the debut echoed. Whilst the former is a more traditional guitar instrumental fusing technical and melodic aspects that will appeal to all metal fans. The rest of the album focuses on strong heavy metal/hard rock with strong vocal melodies and memorable themes.

Vocalist Giorgio Gueglio penned all the albums lyrics covering a variety of stories all based around the different meanings of the word “desire.” The title track is about the passion that lights between two individuals. In “Will Spell” the desire means hope, the hope of escaping from reality and the will to dream anyway. In the opening track “Event Horizon” there is the desire to cross the human borderline of reason. The songs tell about the general relativity, where event horizon is a boundary in space beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer. It’s a point of no return that represents the curiosity of the man who wants to know everything new for him.

In “Scarlett” the lyrics are based on meaning behind the film “Gone With The Wind” that represents the desire as the strength to go on between the pains and discomforts of war, where a combative women never looses her female charms. On “Cat-House” we can find two desires: the more turbid desire of a customer who turns to a prostitute to overcome the difficulties of life; and the desire of the prostitute that want to escape from that condition. “Misr” tells about the ingredients for magic or bewitched potions that responds to the desire of evocating far and unspoiled landscapes. All the lyrics are delivered with great strength and clarity from one of metal strongest new female vocalists.

The majority of what would become LAST DESIRE was written between May and September 2009. Three songs were sent to Lion Music as demo of the new album and these saw the label offer a deal for the second album. Recordings then commenced at the end of November 2009 with mixing and mastering taking place in December 2009 with the album seeing release on June 19th 2010.

Lion Music are proud to introduce the signing and debut album from one of the most original new progressive metal bands of recent years — Day Six. Hailing from the Netherlands, Day Six are a first class powerful four piece who produce a mammoth sound of great scope and depth on their debut album THE GRAND DESIGN.

With a sound that combines elements from across progressive music’s history, Day Six with THE GRAND DESIGN have come up with a unique take on the genre which is equal parts dark and light making great use of dynamics and textures. Comparisons could be made between a fusion of Pink Floyd, Rush, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater and Opeth where colossal guitar riffs collide and intertwine with synthesized textures and enthralling vocals for a truly mesmerizing effect.

Lyrically THE GRAND DESIGN is a concept album which focuses on an extraterrestrial spaceship that has been found in Lake Vostok, Antarctica. The storyline is following five weather scientists who did this discovery and found out about the secrecy on Extraterrestrial contact on Earth. The elite government finds out about the scientists, and to prevent them from bringing out the truth on E.T. life, they are locked in psychiatric hospitals while agents try to erase their experiences from their memories. However, the scientists develop a way to communicate telepathically with each other and with the E.T. beings. One of the scientists is writing a diary — the song “A Soul’s Documentary” is about these writings. In this way, they try to bring out the truth to the world despite the plans of the government.

Section A return after an absence of four years with their third album SACRIFICE. Led by the rich vocals of Andy Engberg and the virtuoso guitar work of Torben Enevoldsen (Acacia Avenue, Fatal Force) the band is completed by new drummer Thomas Heintzelmann (Decoy) for the pounding 10 tracks of the new album.

SACRIFICE marks a heavier and more direct approach from Section A with a more streamlined song orientated approach than its two predecessors THE SEVENTH SIGN (2003) and PARALLEL LIVES (2006). The progressive elements of its predecessors are used more sparingly this time round and lyrically there is no concept to follow yet the album does tread the a similar ground in lyric subject matter.

Album promo page inc. audio:

Pangea are a melodic hard rock band that should be a household name, as it stands the band are highly respected on the underground scene thanks to two albums released in the mid 1990’s. RETROSPECTACULAR marks the release of the band’s long-thought-lost third album.

RETROSPECTACULAR is classic Pangea, led by the punchy and expressive guitar work and vocals of Torben Lysolm, the band peddle a similar vein of rock to early Extreme with the guitar skill to match their late ’80s/early ’90s contemporaries. The album will also please fans of the band’s first two releases as the classic Pangea sound is continued here in fine style.

It may have taken over a decade to be finished but RETROSPECTACULAR finally sees release on May 21st 2010 on Lion Music.

Album promo page inc. audio:

Dreyelands are a melodic progressive metal band from Hungary. Their debut album ROOMS OF REVELATION showcases the band’s versatile attitude for music being a tasty mixture of the metallic and the melodic side of progressive and power metal, combined with a touch of ’80s AOR/hard rock music.

The songs are powered by heavy guitar riffs fused with ultra melodic, memorable vocal themes along with clever arrangements. Sonically the album is big, modern and natural with no triggers on the drums and live string arrangements, etc. The first half of the album has the lighter songs and as the listener gets nearer to the end they are increasingly heavier and darker.

Album promo page inc. audio:

EYEWITNESS OF LIFE is the debut album from a new act from Finland — enter Grönholm led by guitarist and song writer Mika Grönholm. The music of EYEWITNESS OF LIFE is built with an appreciation for a number of metal genres yet there is a common theme of progressive orientated riffs throughout the album, however EYEWITNESS OF LIFE avoids the monster shredding the genre is renowned for resulting in a more focused compact album for those that like strong songs first and foremost.

Nuances of artists such as Queensrÿche and Rush can be heard here and there, but the song is of main concern for Grönholm who also adds a few shades of other cultural sounds from Indian and Spanish music along with some jazz inspired progressions to add a little spice, yet the overall feel remains firmly in the metal camp and is easily accessible.

-Coming To DVD On July 27: The Rolling Stones – 1969-1974 – THE MICK TAYLOR YEARS

The story behind The Stones’ finest era…

Often regarded as the period in which The Rolling Stones recorded the finest music of their career, the years during which Mick Taylor was the fifth Stone remain the band’s “Golden Age.” Notably, on albums LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS and EXILE ON MAIN STREET the Stones’ sound changed as they developed new ideas and were informed by a range of new influences. But crucially it was Taylor’s sophisticated blues and jazz licks that gave The Rolling Stones an added dimension between 1969 and 1974 — one they lacked both before and afterwards. This dynamic film tells the behind the scenes story of this hugely productive era for the group.

Featuring interviews with Taylor himself and further contributions from his old boss, John Mayall; author and group colleague, Robert Greenfield; Village Voice music editor, Robert Christgau; Stones session musicians, Al Perkins and Bill Plummer; highly regarded U.K. music critic, Barney Hoskyns and many others. The program also includes liberal performance footage of The Stones, archive footage and interviews, numerous seldom seen photographs and a host of other features.

Extras include:
– “Meet Mick” — John Mayall and music historian Alan Clayson tell the Mick Taylor story, prior to his entry into The Rolling Stones
– Contributor Biographies

-Hello From Neal Morse

Hello everyone,

Good morning! As I sit here drinking coffee from my special “Bonn” coffee mug, (bought as a reminder from my dear wife) I am reflecting on all the great things that have happened over the last weeks and am touched by all the wonderful people I have seen and have gotten to be with all over the world. I would like to thank all of you who came out to the Transatlantic concerts and say “thanks for a fantastic time!” It was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on, in a variety of ways, and I want to thank you all from my heart. What a time it was!

To the people in the Inner Circle: It was great meeting many of you out there on the road. I need to tell you that there was a mistake made on the latest IC disc. It seems that it is PAL (not the NTSC format as I thought) and we didn’t know it. It played fine for us but if some of you are having trouble that is why. Also, about two weeks ago our business computer crashed and Cherie hired a guy to retrieve the data and set up a new computer but he hasn’t gotten it done yet. Bottom line is: she hasn’t been able to do any business emails since then. So, if you have an email in to Radiant we are not ignoring you! We just don’t have our system up and running. That should happen in the next days and we will take care of everything then.

Right now we are spending two days just being together and resting a bit after the tour. I’m sure you can understand that!! We will get right on all the biz asap.

Speaking of business stuff… We have some of the leftover Transatlantic merchandise at Radiant. I will go over what we have left and we will put it on sale next week. It will be first come, first served so, if you want any TA shirts, hoodies or DVDs be watching for that email!

OK, that’s all for now. God bless you and thanks for everything! Back to my coffee…

-Happy Birthday, Wendy O. Williams — The Legend Would Have Been 61

Wendy Orlean Williams (May 28, 1949 – April 6, 1998)

Tomorrow, the legendary Wendy O. Williams (WOW) would have turned 61 years old, and Aggronautix is celebrating her legacy. Anyone that pre-orders a Wendy O. “1982” Throbblehead through the end of May has the chance to win a prize pack that includes a Plasmatics – Coup d’Etat: Revolutionary Rock ‘N’ Roll T-Shirt, Plasmatics & Wendy O Williams – BEYOND THE VALLEY OF 1984 VINYL, and Wendy O. Williams & The Plasmatics – THE DVD: 10 YEARS OF REVOLUTIONARY ROCK & ROLL.

So radical, so unique, innovative and ahead of her time was Wendy, that today, over 30 years after she first exploded onto the New York underground scene and over 20 years after she stopped performing, and over 10 years after her death, she still remains a threat to the poseurs, phonies, and hypocrites of the male-dominated cultural (and music) establishment and their service (hidden or not) to the hegemony of the power elite.

Known during her day as first the “Queen Of Punk,” “Queen Of Shock Rock”, and “Dominatrix Of The Decibels,” and later the “High Priestess Of Metal.” “Wendy O.” (or “WOW”) as she was typically called, first grabbed the public’s attention as front person for the culture-shattering concept band Plasmatics, the counter-culture band of changing musicians created and put together around her by Yale MFA holding “anti-artist” Rod Swenson in 1977.

Both Williams and Swenson shared a revulsion for the banality, conformity of contemporary cultural consumerism and its consequences and were determined to launch a head on assault. Williams’ fearless attitude and uncompromising tough agressive vocals, claiming territory previously reserved for males, even while giving the stiff middle finger to the establishment saw her get a Grammy Nomination as Best Female Rock Vocalist of the Year, while her jaw-dropping stage shows and political stance saw her banned in London, arrested multiple times and severely beaten by the police in Milwaukee, WI.

During her 10 year recording career she produced eight studio albums, multiple E.P.s, each which still stands as a landmark in musical history. Her death-defying accompanying videos still stand unmatched today, as do her stage shows which saw her destroying icons of mass consumerism such as the sledgehammering of TVs and the blowing up of full size cars on stage as well as the chainsawing of guitars.

Plasmatics “Butcher Baby”:

In a few short days, Aggronautix is releasing their very first female throbblehead, Wendy O. Williams “1982,” in the limited capacity of 2000 numbered units.

The figure captures Wendy’s incredible 1982 look, stands at seven inches tall, and is made of a lightweight polyresin. Displayed in a tri-windowed box, here she is accurately sculpted right down to the platinum blonde mohawk, spiked arm bands, and tattered threads.

The throbblehead figure will be distributed by MVD Entertainment Group — a company specializing in music-related distribution since 1986 — and DKE Toys — a wholesale distributor of urban / vinyl / designer art / objects / toys / figurines.

Wendy is the sixth punk personality to be polyresinated by Aggronautix. In May of 2009, the company launched with a highly popular GG Allin “1991” figure, which was limited to 2,000 numbered units. That figure has since sold out…

All Aggronautix figures are now available for purchase on http://www.aggronautix.com/ or http://www.seeofsound.com/ and will also be available at many independent retailers, comic shops, tattoo parlors, and Walmart (just kidding).

Fire Trails recorded two CDs VANADIUM TRIBUTE (Underground Symphony) and THIRD MOON (Valery Records). Band: Highway 414
Genre: Blues / Rock
Release Date: March 20, 2010

Highway 414 (four, one, four) got its start when guitarist Saul Aaron Oliver decided to realize his dream of putting a band together. Although he had only played guitar for about ten years, his tenacity and love of music allowed him to surpass most of his contemporaries. After auditioning several drummers and bass players and on the verge of giving up, he found Eric Sorenson, another hard working, quick study, on drums and Dan Behrens, a veteran who had played bass for a cover band in the ’70s. Then in late 2008 they met up with vocalist/harmonica player Paul Fecke who was on hiatus after touring with a band earlier in the year and the lineup was complete.

Over 30 years separates the oldest from the youngest member in this band. The thing we all have in common, no matter how young or old, is we were all heavily influenced by the rock music of the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and beyond, from the early Stones and Yardbirds to Zeppelin, Cream, Allman Bros., ZZ Top, Stevie Ray, all the way to Guns N’ Roses and Kid Rock. The common thread that runs through all these various artists is the influence of the blues. The blues is the foundation for most all the music we grew up with and felt inspired by, so for us it is important to stay in touch with that foundation.

What sets this band apart is that we are not trying to sound like anyone else. We play what we like, the music that makes us feel good. It doesn’t matter if we’re performing a cover or one of several original songs; it comes from the soul, not from the head. We do not chase the latest pop sound. We grew up in working class homes. We play working class music for working class people.

“With Paul Fecke on harmonica and vocals, S. Aaron Oliver on guitar, Dan Behrens on bass and Eric Sorenson on drums, we have a perfect combo that actually listens to one another, making music for those who still like to hear updated but not outdated blues-style rocking, loud music.” – Martin Jack Rosenblum – The Shepherd Express

Band: The Lidocaine
Label: The Lidocaine
Street Date: October 25, 2009
From: Helsinki, Finland
File Under: Rock/Progressive, Rock/Metal

The Lidocaine is a finnish rock/metal/progressive band coming from the city of Helsinki.

Debut album THE VOICES AND NOISES OF KILING KOLING was released in summer 2009 and it has got some very good reviews in Finnish magazines. The album was recorded and mixed by Hape Haavikko between February and December 2008 in Fakiiriaudio studio in Vantaa, Finland.

After the final mix band started to look for a record company but finally decided to publish it themselves. The album has ten songs, five made by Anthony and five made by Eroz and they both sing their own songs, and this thing that the band has two lead singers has turned out to be an interesting thing for listeners and it also gives lots of possibilities for the vocal arrangements.

There is a video document about the making of the album in YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/thelidocaine and also a studio blog at
http://thelidocaine.ajatukseni.net/ .

Right now band has started reheasals for the second album and gigs coming in spring and summer 2010. The Lidocaine was founded in December 2007.

“All the songs here are very solid and well performed and given the right exposure I believe The Lidocaine could do quite well internationally, if not quite setting the world on fire.

“Stand out tracks for me include ‘All That You Ever Were,’ with its Dio era Rainbow esq mid section, ‘Dig Down Your Cave’ and ‘Enjoy The Ride.’

-Gallows End Sets Release Date For Debut Album NEMESIS DIVINE!

The Swedish Heavy Metal band Gallows End has set the worldwide release date for their upcoming debut album NEMESIS DIVINE at June 25, 2010. The album will be released through Farvahar Records and distributed worldwide by Nightmare Records. The CD has been recorded, mixed and mastered at the 7th Gate Studios by Thord Klarström. All artwork is from the hand of J.P. Fournier (also, Edguy, Avantasia, Immortal, DragonForce, Power Quest, Steel Attack, Stormlord, among others).

Originally conceived as a one-man project of multi-talented frontman Thord Klarström, Gallows End has grown to a full four-piece lineup. After releasing a three-song demo in 2007 that garnered critical and fan praise, work began on a full-length CD. The promise hinted at in the demo recordings comes to fruition on NEMESIS DIVINE — guitar-centered and laden with catchy riffs and melodies, the lyrics run from the haunting title track to the rousing “Not Your Own” to the infectious “Soul Collector.”

With clean, but gritty and powerful vocals, well-placed harmonies, talented instrumentation and songwriting, and strong production values, NEMESIS DIVINE is what a metal album should be — 59 minutes of bone-crushing, head-banging, neck-snapping, face-melting metal fun.

Kingdom Of The Damned
No Return

-Reissue Of Groundbreaking Neurosis Album ENEMY OF THE SUN Confirmed

Neurot Recordings is proud to announce the reissue of one of the most groundbreaking releases in the ever-expanding lineage of icons Neurosis, ENEMY OF THE SUN.

With Neurosis’ earlier releases — 1987’s PAIN OF MIND, and even 1990’s THE WORD AS LAW — the band’s jagged and eerie blend of metallic, hypnotic, post-gutter punk was instantly recognized as wholly unique, yet it took multiple releases for the then Bay-area unit to infinitely define their sound, forcing the world to listen, then run for cover. Their 1992 full-length SOULS AT ZERO showcased the band branching off into much more expanded songwriting, giving birth to much longer hymns, infusing them with tribal rhythms and slow-building post-doom bastardization, then breaking massive new ground for the metal world.

But it was their follow-up in 1993, the crushing ENEMY OF THE SUN LP, that would be the album to take the pulsing, hypnotizing monoliths Neurosis was crafting down to much darker, and much, much heavier territory for the rest of the band’s still-growing roster of masterpieces. Still to this day, critics and fans of heavy and experimental metal hold this release to be one of the harshest, spine-chilling, mind-warping releases in history, and countless acts have cited ENEMY… as “the one that changed everything” for them.

The eight tracks on the release was one of the most massively cavernous, crushing records the world had experienced. A mesmerizing, pressurizing, dirge-driven display of brutal riffing, thick with haunting samples, layered, anguished vocal tracks, raging multiple-member percussion contributions, and some of the most mammoth buildups ever, ENEMY OF THE SUN was an album that left a sense of anguish in your soul long after the record was over.

Neurot Recordings are exceptionally proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Neurosis, and once again issue this classic album to the masses. 2010’s reissue of ENEMY OF THE SUN bears a fully redesigned package by visionary artist, Neurosis live visual master Josh Graham, and will be released worldwide on August 30th, 2010.

*** PRESS RELEASE #23 ***
-Projekt Announces The Return Of Projektfest In July

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — “When I started Projekt,” comments label-founder Sam Rosenthal, “I never expected that 27 years later I would still be at it, still releasing adventurous music, still making fans, and performing live on a regular basis. The music industry is a mess of corporate madness, run by people who have no passion for art, just passion for money. Projekt is my way to make my art — and the art of bands I love — available for people who still have a passion for music.”

Rosenthal brings that enthusiasm and love to Philadelphia July 30 and 31 for Projektfest, the 9th label festival and the first since 2002. Projektfest ’10 will be a weekend of dark rock and indie music at the legendary Trocadero Theatre.

Projekt is America’s premier independent label specializing in intense music in the darkwave, shoegaze, ethereal, ambient, and darkCabaret genres.

“I’ve navigated the waters of the music industry for most of my adult life,” Sam says. “I love what I do, and I’ve got it to the point where the label is fun to work at and provide a minimal amount of drama. I am releasing Projekt’s 245th CD this year, I have not succumbed to the downward spiral that prevades most of the industry. Actually, the label is more profitable than ever. Why? Because we love what we do and we keep in touch with our fans. People have this idea that musicians are aloof and unapproachable. My idea behind the festival to break down the barriers and bring the fans and bands together.”

Projektfest is a hands-on event for Rosenthal, a light-hearted guy with a casual manner and an easy smile. The festival features a sampling of artists from the Projekt’s roster, including Rosenthal’s own Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Lovesliescrushing, Unto Ashes, Weep, Makaras Pen and five others.

Rosenthal’s dark rock outfit Black Tape For A Blue Girl recently released their 10th studio album, a collection of boisterously indecent character sketches performed in theatrical cabaret style. Keyboardist/guitarist Rosenthal is joined by vocalist Athan Maroulis (formerly of the pioneering electronic band Spahn Ranch), drummer Brian Viglione (of the Dresden Dolls) and Philadelphia-native dark cabaret chanteuse Nicki Jaine.

Projektfest ’10 will also introduce the label’s newest signee, Weep, the musical side of Doc Hammer, co-creator of Cartoon Network’s “The Venture Bros.” WORN THIN, the first full-length from the New York City band, takes their aggressive and firmly pop-structured songs to a place of heightened grandeur within Weep’s guitar and drum-driven dark rock sound.

“Projekt welcomes every insane idea as long as the music is beautiful and the quality is excellent,” Hammer said. “Projekt gives artists the freedom to fall on their ass or make a true piece of art. And that is something only a label run by a working artist can offer… The opportunity to make art and find an audience that appreciates it.”

The first Projektfest was held in 1996 in Chicago, where the label was based. Rosenthal took a break from the festival after 2002 to focus on raising his son, but Black Tape For A Blue Girl’s tour earlier this year brought out the festival-itch, and Rosenthal began making arrangements for its return.

“I throw these festivals to bring us together, to give the fans great music and to give the bands a chance to connect to fans of other label acts,” Rosenthal said.

In keeping with this philosophy, Projektfest ’10 kicks off with a “Meet Up,” where fans, artists, and Projekt staff can meet and mingle prior to the show at the Hampton Inn, on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. Fans can gather again on Saturday at the hotel, which will host a Day Stage and Merchants Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The festival is a two-day event presented in conjunction with the Philadelphia-based Dracula’s Ball, a gothic/industrial music night held Saturday Night at Shampoo. The Digital Ferret record store will also host a pre-event on Thursday.

“Hosting a label festival is really a blast,” Rosenthal said. “Hanging out with bands I usually only communicate with by email. Meeting the label’s fans. We sold a pair of tickets to a couple from Anchorage, Alaska. That’s dedication to the music! Our fans stick with us because they know we’re the real thing, we’re people who love this music, and make songs for people who love music.”

-Fear Factory Confirm More In-Stores/Meet-And-Greets; Additional North American Dates Announced

Candlelight Records today confirms three more in-store/meet-and-greets as part of Fear Factory’s ongoing Fear Campaign American Tour 2010. All four members of the band will be available to meet with fans at Magnolia Thunderpussy in Columbus, Ohio on May 30, Digital Ferret Records in Philadelphia on June 6, and Vintage Vinyl Records in Fords, New Jersey on June 10.

Fear Factory, currently on tour supporting their latest album MECHANIZE, had a brief scare earlier this week when their tour bus nearly went off road while in route to Boise, Idaho. Luckily no one was injured and the band made their show at Knitting Factory Concert House without much delay. Guitarist Dino Cazares says, “we were on our way to Boise for a day off when about 8:45 a.m. our bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. He swerved to the opposite side of the road. Most of us woke up when we felt the bus on the rumble strips and then the dirt. He woke up in time to swerve back onto our side of the road and pull over.” Continuing he notes, “Thank God there was no on coming cars or 18-wheelers on the road. Everyone is fine just a little nervous.”

The second leg of Fear Factory’s Fear Campaign American Tour continues the band’s ongoing promotion and the worldwide momentum surrounding the quartet’s eighth studio album, MECHANIZE. Released February 9, the album has received amazing fan and media acclaim. The record is approaching 90,000 sales worldwide and continues to see significant weekly sales. The North American dates, now expanded to run through the end of July, follows the band’s recent eight-day European tour supporting Metallica, and their successful performance at Revolver Magazine’s Golden God Awards scheduled for television broadcast this Saturday via VH1.

Fear Factory’s latest radio single, “Final Exit” made impact this week at hard rock/metal stations nationwide. The song is expected to follow the success of earlier singles “Powershifter” and “Fear Campaign.” As earlier reported, the band have done two special edits of the 8:11 minute song with hopes to position the song for breakout play on the country’s larger Active Rock stations. Vocalist Burton C. Bell noted, “Dino and I have created the edits to condense the song into a time specific for radio. We are very happy fans are loving the song for it is one that touches upon the importance of the freedom of choice and personal liberty that all human beings should be allowed.”

Complete tour dates are noted below and available at the band’s official Web site, http://www.fearfactorymusic.com/ , and official social networking sites located at http://www.myspace.com/fearfactory and http://ww.facebook.com/fearfactory . Tickets are available via all major ticket agencies and each venue’s in-house box offices. MECHANIZE is available in stores now and via Candlelight’s official webstore located at http://www.candlelightrecordsusa.com .

-Bret Michaels has certainly been busy. Upong recovering from his brain hemorrhage he left the hospital last week and gave an interview to Oprah Winfrey, Then he suffered what is termed a “mini-stroke” and was found to have a small hole in his heart. He then appeared on the live finale of Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” Sunday night — and won. Check out the commercial for his new Diet Snapple drink “Trop-A-Rocka” Tea at http://www.nbc.com/the-apprentice/video/brets-snapple-commercial/1229704/ . He’s then made several more TV appearances so far this week, including “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on Tuesday and the “American Idol” finale last night. Check out video of him performing a duet of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” with “Idol” contestant Casey James at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY4WTylpcUM . See http://www.bretmichaels.com/ for more.

-Rush will release two new songs, “Caravan” and “BU2,” via digital music providers on June 1. The tracks will appear on the band’s upcoming 20th studio album, CLOCKWORK ANGELS, and will be performed live this summer on the Time Machine Tour. The iTunes version of the two-track bundle will include a booklet of artwork and lyrics in PDF format. See http://www.rush.com/ for more.

-Votum — described as “Polish prog/atmospheric wizards” — will release METAFICTION on August 3 through Armoury Records. Hype: “METAFICTION is at once dark, somber and beautiful; emotional music for those who enjoy the mysteries of the human mind. The record, recorded at the famed Izabelin Studio in Poland, is a seven-track concept album that focuses as much on the music as it does the lyrics and visual art surrounding it. Votum’s concern is not of the particular style of music they play but rather the atmosphere pouring from within. For fans of Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Anathema.” See http://www.votumband.pl/ and http://www.myspace.com/votumband for more.

Thanks to Liz Ciavarella-Brenner, Chad Bowar, Jon Asher, MusicBuyMail, and Bill “Baluchitherium” Kotowski for help gathering some of this information.

-One day last week I stopped at an f.y.e. store near my office where all single-disc CD releases are $9.99. I’ve been there a few times looking for Ratt’s INFESTATION, but it’s never in stock. Again I was shut out, so I asked an employee for help. He said they could probably special-order it, so I followed up on that at the service desk. That guy told me I had to put down a deposit of $6.00 — no problem — but then said since it’s a “special order” the total cost would be $18.99. So first off, they have to “special order” a domestic U.S. release? And then since it’s a “special order” I can’t get the store’s usual $9.99 price? After I picked my jaw up off the floor I said “No thanks” and the guy looked genuinely surprised that I canceled my order. To which I thought, “Okay, now seriously, you’re lucky to even be selling CDs anymore. Who in their right mind would pay that?” Wow.

-So Slayer was on Jimmy Kimmel’s show last week, performing two songs from their new album WORLD PAINTED BLOOD. It was pretty surreal. And now Neal and Keith told me about a “Slayer Goes To Church” video featuring “religious crazies headbanging over a bed of Slayer. Check it out at http://www.metalinjection.net/tv/view/5028/slayer-goes-to-church .

-The Kiss songs on “Glee” were funny. The actors dressed up and wore makeup, with the drummer being Gene Simmons. Kinda surreal to see the Demon behind the kit. 🙂 And since there were five guys, one had to wear this weird hybrid makeup, kind of a cross between Vinnie Vincent, and Eric Carr, and…some Norwegian death metal dude?

-Amid all the initial shock surrounding the Dio news last week, my family went out for ice cream at this place called Happy Jack’s. I scanned the menu looking for something new, and I saw this flavor: “Stargazer.” No joke. It was good.

-Random thought. As I watched the DVD in Triumph’s new GREATEST HITS: REMIXED (see review below) I noticed drummer Gil Moore at times 1) looks a heckuva lot like Howard Stern, and 2) sounds like Ted Nugent on some of the earlier stuff.

-In my current playlist: Avantasia – THE WICKED SYMPHONY (Nuclear Blast), Heavenly – CARPE DIEM (AFM Records), Canvas Solaris – IRRADIANCE (Sensory), Brian Howe – CIRCUS BAR (Frontiers).

MASS – SEA OF BLACK (A-/B+) Escape Music, 2010
12 tracks, RT: 52:00
Mass is one of those bands that should have been a lot bigger than they were, their late ’80s albums TAKE YOU HOME and VOICES IN THE NIGHT among those I still find myself reaching for periodically. Combining melodic metal with commercially accessible songs is something Mass have always excelled at, and new album SEA OF BLACK is definitely no exception. There is an almost NWOBHM vibe to tracks such as “Thru The Rain,” “All That I Needed” and “Justify,” while “All The Years Gone” boasts the kind of exceptional light-and-shade songwriting these guys are known for. Vocalist Louis D’Augusta seems to have lost none of the skill and power to project forcefully and emotionally, his style refreshingly original. Gene D’Itria has a knack for delivering killer rhythms and stormy lead breaks that steer clear of self-indulgence, while bassist Michael Palumbo and drummer Joey “Vee” Vadala keep things basic when needed but are not afraid to inject creative and memorable fills into the material. The production is a bit raw and the band get a little too close to Bon Jovi and White Lion territory on “Coming Home” and “More Than A Friend,” respectively, but crank up the title track and you’ll find yourself right back to authentic metal bliss. Highly recommended.

TRIUMPH – GREATEST HITS: REMIXED (A-/B+) TML Entertainment Inc./Universal, 2010
CD: 14 tracks, RT: 1:11:30
DVD: RT: 1:40:15
It took me a minute to get past this line from bassist Mike Levine in the press kit: “For years, Triumph fans have been demanding that we give them a fresh greatest hits package.” Really? I can see demanding a new studio album, but a new hits package? And fresh? The CD in this new two-disc set has significant overlap with 1989’s CLASSICS and 2005’s LIVIN’ FOR THE WEEKEND – THE ANTHOLOGY. (And it omits my personal favorite Triumph songs: “A World Of Fantasy” and “Headed For Nowhere.” For shame!) Okay, all that aside, this is indeed a great overview of the Canadian trio’s vast repertoire of classic, classy melodic hard rock with an overall uplifting vibe. For the most part the disc is evenly split between album tracks sung by drummer Gil Moore and guitarist Rik Emmett (quite literally — the first 13 go Gil/Rik/Gil/Rik/Gil/Rik/Gil/Rik/Gil/Rik/Gil/Rik/Gil) with a rarity as the closer, a Moore-sung cover of “Love Hurts” that reportedly dates back to 1991. In general Moore’s songs rock a little harder, are maybe a bit more metallic, and Emmett’s songs are more intricate, thoughtful, and musical. Hooks abound throughout — just try to get the choruses of “Follow Your Heart,” “Somebody’s Out There,” or “Lay It On The Line” out of your head — and the musicianship from all three guys is without peer. (Side note to you young’uns: Rik Emmett has kept a low profile for some time now. If you haven’t heard of him, buy this and take note. He is very, very good.) The DVD features promo clips for most of the songs on the CD, plus “Never Say Never” and some bonuses. The bonus clips are “Child Of The City” from the brief ’90s era after Emmett had left the band, a 10-and-a-half minute bootleg (though pro shot) live version of “Blinding Light Show,” and a YouTube fan video/clip montage for “Love Hurts;” the longer segments feature about 30 minutes’ worth of acceptance speeches and short documentaries from the band’s inductions into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame and the Canadian Music And Broadcast Industry Hall Of Fame. Honestly, the induction footage is probably something you’ll just watch once, but the clips are a fun look back through late ’70s and ’80s hard rock video style and fashion. Triumph always took pride in its live show, so there is a lot of performance footage in the clips, but there are also a few forays into “conceptual footage” (read: hot chicks) and even some poofy hair towards the end. And finally, the package’s booklet is done well with a great band history and tons of pictures. Overall, I’d say GREATEST HITS: REMIXED should please casual and first-time Triumph fans, but I suspect diehards may be a little disappointed more “deep cuts” weren’t featured.
