Hard rock guitarist Michael Schenker is a former member of UFO and a founding member of the Scorpions and the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). He is the younger brother of Rudolf Schenker, guitarist with the Scorpions. Schenker joined UFO under unusual circumstances. The band left the U.K. to play some dates in Germany. Their guitarist at the time, Bernie Marsden, forgot his passport and was unable to make the first gig. At the venue, UFO spotted Michael playing a soundcheck with the Scorpions and managed to persuade him into playing that evening’s show. And the rest is history… Eventually, Schenker decided he wanted to play his own music and not be a hired hand for another band. In 1979, he founded the Michael Schenker Group, and the band has been recording and touring as numerous incarnations ever since.

Author, clinician, drummer… Carmine Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group’s high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart’s backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Young Turks.” In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley’s first solo album and has recorded with Stanley Clarke and Pink Floyd. He also recorded and toured with Ted Nugent, Ozzy Osbourne, Blue Murder, and was the founding member of King Kobra. Fuel Records reissued Carmine Appice’s Guitar Zeus project in August 2009.

-Accept: New Video Online!

“Teutonic Terror,” the video for a track off the upcoming Accept album BLOOD OF THE NATIONS, debuted on MySpace on May 10th. It was shot by director/producer/editor Dave Blass. Executive Producer is Doug Jeffery (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Rhianna) for Grid 41.

When asked how he came to be involved in making Accept’s “most metal video,” director/producer and long-time Accept fan Blass states:

“I first met [guitarist] Wolf [Hoffman] and [bassist] Peter [Baltes] back in ’89 when they were touring with W.A.S.P. on the EAT THE HEAT tour. I was a DJ in Boston doing the Sunday night metal show. I reconnected with Wolf later when we used a song from his classical album for a reality series I produced. After that, we talked on-and-off over the years. He reminded me that I had called him to do some photography on ‘The Biggest Loser’ when we needed some cool stylized photos of the contestants. The producers opted out of paying for a cool photographer and I ended up doing it myself. We touched base when the [band] reunion happened and talked about a video, and when it got closer, we all just decided to make it happen.

“Grid 41 is the video production company owned by Doug Jeffery who I brought in to do the project. I have worked with Doug for years and told him I needed a favor and that this would be a great project for his company as they are branching into music videos. They did the design work on the Miley Cyrus ‘Party In The USA’ and Rhianna ‘Umbrella’ videos to name a few. Too pretty for my taste… I needed more tanks and fire!

“Working with the band was great. Peter [Baltes] was impressed when I pulled my 1985 Accept shirt out of my bag at the shoot. I couldn’t tell who was more excited, the band or the crew. Even those that weren’t familiar with their music got caught up in the mosh. I mean, Wolf Hoffmann and his Flying V standing on a GIANT TANK surrounded by smoke and flames doing his guitar solo… how can you not love that?! Having spent many a night in high school waiting till midnight to catch ‘Headbanger’s Ball’ and wishing they would play ‘Balls To The Wall,’ it was a very cool to be a part of the Accept legacy. I think the best quote about the video comes from my production assistant Reed Blake who was awestruck after the first take with the huge flames, the crane, the smoke the drums, and the tanks. He said to me, ‘I have never seen anything this METAL.'”

View the Accept video for “Teutonic Terror” here:

Accept’s 2010 lineup (which features three on-going members) is: Wolf Hoffmann, guitar; Peter Baltes, bass; Stefan Schwarzmann, drums; Herman Frank, guitar; and Mark Tornillo on vocals.

BLOOD OF THE NATIONS, Accept’s twelfth full-length studio album, is scheduled to be released in Europe in September. Their 13-date European tour begins May 11th in Vilnius, Lithuania and includes opening for AC/DC in Hannover, Germany.

-Sweden Rock to Honor Ronnie James Dio

Sweden Rock Festival
June 9-10-11-12, Solvesborg

Ronnie James Dio made four appearances at Sweden Rock Festival: twice with his own band Dio, and twice with Heaven & Hell — most recently just last summer. Ronnie always had a keen eye towards Sweden and Sweden Rock, and over the years we developed a good relationship to both him and his wife/manager Wendy. It was with heavy hearts we woke up Monday morning realizing that the news of his passing the day before had not been a bad dream, and that one of the greatest of all time had indeed left us.

To honor his memory, we have decided to rename the Zeppelin Stage: this year it will be called Dio Stage. We are also planning a tribute ceremony on one of the main stages. More info on this will follow shortly.

In October, we will gather some of the most prominent Swedish metal musicians for a tribute concert on the Sweden Rock Cruise. The names of the participants will be announced as soon as they have been confirmed.

-OSI Signed With Metal Blade Records!

OSI (Office Of Strategic Influence), the hard rock duo formed by Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater), has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records! The band has gained a strong underground following since its inception in 2003. OSI already has three full-length records and an E.P. in its catalogue of music. Their 2009 album, BLOOD, includes guests Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). Past participants include Mike Portnoy on the first two albums, Sean Malone and Steven Wilson on the debut, and Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) on FREE. OSI is currently working on their fourth album and Metal Blade debut for a late 2010 release.

OSI’s music can’t easily be pigeonholed and is a completely different animal when compared to its founders’ other projects. The music is a combination of dark rock choruses with atmospheric, often industrial keys and is an eclectic mix of both Moore’s and Matheos’ influences.

Metal Blade founder and CEO Brian Slagel adds: “We are very excited to welcome OSI to the Metal Blade Family. I have been a big fan of the band and all of us here can’t wait to work on the new album.”

Keep an eye out for more news and updates as the band continues work on their new album!

-Foghat Return To Their Blues Roots On LAST TRAIN HOME Due June 15th, 2010

Foghat is often linked to the classic rock genre, due to such anthems as “Slow Ride” and “Fool For The City,” but the band has always had their roots in vintage blues. So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to longtime fans that Foghat has reconnected with the blues on their latest release, LAST TRAIN HOME. Recorded both in New York at EKO Studios and at Foghat’s own studio, Boogie Motel South, the album combines covers of such blues classics as “So Many Roads, So Many Trains” and “Shake Your Money Maker,” as well as a few new originals.

The group’s blues roots can be traced back to the pre-Foghat band, Savoy Brown, as well as Foghat’s first hit single — the classic cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You.” But perhaps the most obvious connection was a star-studded concert the band organized in 1977 at the Palladium in New York, when they hosted a benefit to start a Blues Archive at the New York Public Library. Foghat was the house band at the show, as many bona fide blues legends joined them on stage — including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, Pinetop Perkins, Paul Butterfield, Honey Boy Edwards, Otis Blackwell, and Eddie “Bluesman” Kirkland (the latter of which recently reconnected with the band, and led to his inclusion on “Last Train Home”).

LAST TRAIN HOME sees Foghat’s lineup — Roger Earl (drums), Charlie Huhn (vocals/rhythm & lead guitar), and Bryan Bassett (lead & slide guitar) — joined by several special guests, including Kirkland, harmonica player Lefty “Sugar Lips” Lefkowitz, and Earl’s brother, Colin, on piano. Due to a prior commitment for the band’s bassist, Craig MacGregor, former Foghat/Savoy Brown/Outlaws bassist Jeff Howell filled in for the recording.

Additionally, another of the band’s recent endeavors has been the creation of their own wine label Foghat Cellars. Their first wine was a 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, and they will be releasing their 2008 Chardonnay this summer. More info can be found at http://www.foghatcellars.com/ .

One mustn’t forget their roots, and Foghat once more reminds us that it’s the blues that just about every rock n’ roll style is built upon — as evidenced throughout LAST TRAIN HOME.

Complete track list for LAST TRAIN HOME on Foghat Records:

“Born for the Road” – Earl, Bassett, Huhn
“Needle & Spoon” – Chris Youlden
“So Many Roads, So Many Trains” – Otis Rush
“Last Train Home” – Huhn, Bassett, Earl
“Shake Your Money Maker” – Elmore James
“It Hurts Me Too” – Elmore James
“Feel So Bad” – Chuck Willis
“Louisiana Blues” – Muddy Waters
“495 Boogie” – Earl, Earl, Bassett, Howell, Huhn, Lefkowitz
“Rollin’ & Tumblin'” / “You Need Love” – CC/Willie Dixon
“In My Dreams” – Eddie Kirkland
“Good Good Day” – Eddie Kirkland

-Roswell Six To Release TERRA INCOGNITA: A LINE IN THE SAND On June 22

Guest Appearances By Sass Jordan, Steve Walsh (Kansas), Michael Sadler (ex-Saga)

Following up the success of the first effort, Kevin J. Anderson and ProgRock Records announce the second Terra Incognita CD, A LINE IN THE SAND, to coincide with the publication of the second novel, “The Map Of All Things” through Orbit Books.

“This CD features a different, grittier part of the story, focusing on the devastating generations-long war between continents, and it has an entirely different sound,” said Anderson.

This time, the music is helmed by Henning Pauly (Frameshift, Chain, Shadows Mignon) and features some artists returning from the first CD as well as new performers.

“Henning is absolutely perfect for this type of music, with hard-driving guitars, passion, and thought-provoking complexity,” said Shawn Gordon of PRR. “Kevin’s been a fan of Henning’s music for years, and this seemed to be a perfect match.”

TERRA INCOGNITA: A LINE IN THE SAND’S vocals are performed by rock legends Steve Walsh (Kansas), Michael Sadler (ex-Saga), and Sass Jordan (Album Rock’s Female Vocalist of the Year) and Nick Storr (The Third Ending) with guest appearances by Charlie Dominici (solo, original Dream Theater vocalist), Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon and many others), Alexander Froese (Frameshift) and Juan Roos (Shadow’s Mignon).

Anderson and Moesta penned the lyrics/story again and even co-wrote two songs with multi Grammy winner Janis Ian (“Society’s Child,” “At Seventeen,” etc.). Due to commitments to their own bands / projects, Erik Norlander and some of the original performers were unable to participate in the second CD.

“With two CDs and two novels, this takes Terra Incognita into unprecedented territory,” said Anderson. “Progressive rock has always focused on story and ideas. The union of music and prose has never before been done on this scale.”

The first volume, “Beyond The Horizon,” is now available on paper back. For more information on both releases:

Originally formed in 2004 as a group of session musicians backing up a pop vocalist, the band realized that prog was where they wanted to be and ventured out as an instrumental group similar to Planet X. After some time in this configuration they decided that having a vocalist was what they needed and found Tiago and started working on their first album. The debut album of the Portuguese band brings to the 21st century the same non-conformism and artistic expression without boundaries that was so fresh in the past, through musicians like Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Thom Yorke and Steven Wilson. Varying from the most aggressive up-tempo guitar riffs to the intimate warmth of the grand piano, REMEMBER IT is stretching from left to right of the rock repertoire, including the 25-minute conceptual seven-part epic song “My Will To Live.”

PLASTIC SOUP is the first album of the new Dutch Progressive rock band PBII, the successor to the well known Plackband of the ’70s and ’80s, often called the Dutch Genesis. PLASTIC SOUP however, has a sound that is absolutely 2010: modern, fresh and rocky but still with some great symphonic influences of the past. Stylistically, you could place it somewhere between Spock’s Beard, Porcupine Tree, Frost*, Marilion, Linkin Park and Genesis. Special guests include John Mitchell (Arena, It Bites, Frost*), John Jowitt (IQ, Frost*) and Heidi Jo Hines (daughter of Denny Laine of Wings). Though not a concept album, the central theme of the album is the environment. PLASTIC SOUP is another name for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, floating in the ocean with a size twice that of the U.S. Discoverer of this plastic soup is captain Charles Moore, who also did some voice overs on the album. PBII wishes to get more attention to this environmental problem.

EXCAVATIONS OF THE MIND can best be described as symphonic, complex, dynamic, versatile and ambitious. Thriving to revive and reinvent the progressive style and sound of the ’70s, the album hopes to reclaim a place for symphonic rock music in the 21st century. The album dives into the dark and disturbing psyche of a mentally troubled man, while staying true to the concept oriented nature of progressive rock music. The music has a complex structure with a lot of instrumental freedom. Vintage keys add to the warm, symphonic character of their sound. You can often hear a hint of bands such as King Crimson, Gentle Giant, The Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree and Pain Of Salvation in their music. The epic magnitude of the album takes the listener on a journey into ones vivid imagination. Renowned rock illustrator Mark Wilkinson, famous for his work with Marillion, Fish and Judas Priest has created the artwork for the CD.

· A very nice hommage to symphonic 70’s prog, with a modern twist
· Taps in to the prog scene in the Netherlands

-Forbidden: More Song Commentry

Reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrashers Forbidden continue their work at Sonic Room/Audio Voyage Studios in Livermore, California recording their fifth studio album, OMEGA WAVE. Guitarist Steve Smyth checks in with the following update:

“We began Day 3 going straight back into ‘Adapt Or Die,’ finishing up [the] layering and got done a few hours in. I decided to move into a track called ‘Swine’ next. ‘Swine’ is a little different from the rest of the tracks to me, a little more on the ‘doomy’ side of things, but it has more than a few surprises in there. I’m not going to give away too much here… you’ll have to wait for it!

“‘Swine’ has some cool odd-time stuff at the intro, Forbidden style, and well-arranged by Craig [Locicero] and Mark [Hernandez]! I sort of created the intro riff for this song by accident. Craig and I were jamming on some of the other songs one day, and I just happened to be noodling on something, not really thinking about anything, and he looked at me, and said ‘What’s that?! Play that again!’ I played it again, and we turned this from something completely unconscious on my part into the intro of the song pretty quickly! Mark and Craig brought some odd-time and arrangement ideas into it from there, and the rest of the song came right into it. Awesome! I’m a huge fan of things happening like that. The riff I’m talking about has the influence of Randy Rhoads and Sabbath in it, no doubt from my years of playing a lot of that stuff in my Ozzy/Sab tribute Sweet Leaf. A very dark, eerie-sounding (I hope!) arpeggiated pattern that has a moving bass line underneath it as well. Back to tracking: we started from here, and got the flow going, and moved on through the track, noting certain places where I would put some layered stuff in later, as I wanted to bring out the eerie arpeggio section as much as possible.

“Once this was done, I wanted to move into another song I had a bit more of a hand in writing as well, a song called ‘Behind The Mask.’ This one starts off heavy and moody, and does not let up for a long time! Very heavy pounding metal with a lot of peaks and valleys, as well as a killer chorus that Craig came up with for this one, which absolutely is heavy as hell, and jumps around the beat; a little tricky, but grooves like a mofo!

“Again, I don’t want to give away the farm on this one, but there’s some really cool stuff I came up with in the bridge that I hope you’ll all dig on; lots of melody in this section, and not the type of instrument or style I think was ever heard on a Forbidden record, but rest assured, I kept it heavy! We ended the day with this track, and moved into the next day from there… I was exhausted, but stoked as f*** that I got both of these tunes happily where I wanted them.”

-Divebomb Records Update

Widow Available Now (Pre-Order)

We originally released this album in 2003 and at that time shocked many loyal Tribunal Records metalcore followers by serving up a dose of traditional metal similar to the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate yet with a dash of modern Children Of Bodom flair. In 2010 traditional metal is making huge resurgence in the metal community, but Widow since MIDNIGHT STRIKES’ original release have continued carrying the torch having released two more albums (ON FIRE, NIGHTLIFE) via Cruz Del Sur Records.

Having been out of print for years and with the success of our reissue division, Divebomb Records, we have decided to give Widow’s debut album a proper release within an arena we think it will be given the respect it finally deserves. The new MIDNIGHT STRIKES…TWICE! Female fronted Spanish symphonic gothic metallers Diabulus In Musica have uploaded the second new song of their much anticipated debut album SECRETS!

Please surf over to the band’s MySpace to check out “New Era!”

SECRETS was engineered by the prestigious Spanish tech-producer Iñaki Llarena and mixed by former Epica guitar player Ad Sluijter who was blown away by the stuff DIM sent to him. Last but not least, DIM is supported by the invaluable expertise of Sascha Paeth, Simon Oberender and Michael (Miro) Rodenberg who mastered SECRETS in the Gate studios in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Diabulus In Musica managed to record an equilibrated album, including self arranged classical music elements, catchy melodies as well as darker and harsher sounds, so an eclectic but perfectly fused style is what we can find on SECRETS. The metaphorical lyrics of the versatile singer Zuberoa, express personal feelings and worries but we can also find some anthems to nature and freedom or mythological themes.

SECRETS track listing:
1. Renaissance
2. Come To Paradise
3. Nocturnal Flowers

10. Under The Shadow (Of A Butterfly)
11. Beyond Infinity

Band: Svölk
Album Title: SVOLK
Label: Tuba Records
Street Date: Out Now
From: Oslo/Norway
Sounds Like: Svölk
File Under: Rock

Svölk punches hard without gloves and with a match weight of about 400 kg. For the last four years they have established themselves on the Norwegian rock scene. Early in 2005 the band released its first E.P. BEAST UNLEASHED, engineered by Don Dons from We.

This recording has received standing ovations all over the world.

Late 2009 Svölk released history’s first Bear metal album – mastercraft hard rock from the deep forests of eastern Norway.

As original as the band sounds, it still pays a great hommage to traditional eigthies metal masters, but has signature sound of its own. Strong, rich, compelling and with a creative and intelligent twist that lifts this band way above the hundred other bands to emerge from basements and clubs this year.

It’s brutal and it’s charming. They’ve kidnapped the Scorpions hairdresser and they’re making a run for it.

Live these guys will eat you alive — are you ready to be eaten?

Band lineup:

3. Anchor

Band: Wiser Time
Label: Wiser Time Music
Street Date: Feburary 12, 2010
Genre: Roots Rock, Americana

Wiser Time originated in the small town of Millington, NJ by singer/songwriter/guitarist, Carmen Sclafani in the spring of 2002. Sclafani had been a fixture in the local music scene, performing in bars and clubs during the evenings, while working as a commercial artist during the days.

Sclafani had a love of the classic Rock and Roll sounds of ’60s and ’70s bands like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, and The Rolling Stones, and he began writing and recording material that would eventually become the self-produced five-song E.P. titled, INTRODUCING WISER TIME in 2005.

The E.P. was received well by audiences, and local radio stations began playing it. Sclafani continued performing regularly while continuing to record, which would eventually result into Wiser Time’s first full-length album, THERE AND BACK AGAIN, in the fall of 2006.

While in support of THERE AND BACK AGAIN in 2007, Sclafani met drummer Steve Decker and the two instantly clicked. Decker became a permanent member of the band, and the two would spend the remainder of the year performing and writing new material, while pushing the band from local bars to ballrooms.

During this period, Sclafani also spent time exploring some of his earlier, folkier work, and was inspired to write and record a selection of stripped-down songs including a powerful acoustic ballad titled, “What You Give – Unplugged.”

Sclafani and Decker would hit the studio in the winter of 2007 and would record Wiser Time’s second full-length album, ALL FOR ONE, in May 2008 with subsequent touring to follow, including stops in the U.K. and Germany.

In the spring of 2009, Wiser Time would begin work on their third full-length album in Brooklyn, NY. The sessions would be titled BEGGARS AND THIEVES. The band also rounded out it’s lineup by adding lead guitarist, Jimmy Somma, and bassist Damon Trotta.

“It’s fluidly enjoyable stuff, with the likes of ‘Even,’ ‘Hammer Down’ and ‘Blame It All On Me’ rocking hard, whilst the loose-limbed groove of ‘A Long Time Gone’ echoes the Brit rock soulsters Free.” – Classic Rock Magazine, U.K.

“The music is bursting at the seams with feeling. It’s gritty, it’s bluesy and it grabs your attention and warms you up like a double shot of hiskey. A dash of Humble Pie, a dash of J Geils Band and a lot of southern blues roots is the foundation for Wiser Time” – all Access Magazine, Atomic Chaser

Band Lineup:
Carmen Sclafani – Vocals & Guitar
Jimmy Somma – Guitar
Damon Trotta – Bass
Steve Decker – Drums

-Ramesses: New Release Details Unveiled

The psychedelic doom trio Ramesses were spawned in the woodland of Dorset, England in 2003, and have been brutalizing their devoted fanbase ever since, unleashing a rash of E.P.s and demos, one full-length release, splits with Negative Reaction and Unearthly Trance and more over the past seven years. They’ve ripped a wound in the U.K. and across Europe with brutalizing live shows alongside some of the best and heaviest names in the extreme metal world.

2010 brings the next slab of raging doom from Ramesses, in the form of their second mammoth full-length release TAKE THE CURSE, which is set to infect the general public on the 2010 Summer Solstice, June 21st. Releasing the album is new label Ritual Productions; the label formed by the band’s management. The beast will see worldwide release on CD and digital download formats through Ritual, as well as a 2xLP version to be released by Scottish label At War With False Noise.

On TAKE THE CURSE, mournful harmonies are the backdrop to the ever-increasing influence of The Occult on the band. Although a riff tsunami remains the centerpiece, the Ramesses sound is refracted through even more circles of hell; of dirge-sludge, of rhythm, of Lucifer himself. Grim melodies, blistering spaced-out guitar solos and atmospheric samples add depth to the tracks and display the band’s eclectic traits and ’70s influences.

TAKE THE CURSE Track Listing:
1. Iron Crow
2. Terrasaw
3. Black Hash Mass
4. Take The Curse
5. Vinho Dos Mortos
6. Baptism Of The Walking Dead
7. Another Skeleton
8. Hand Of Glory
9. The Weakening
10. Khali Mist

TAKE THE CURSE is a shattering expression of cruelty where Ramesses’ bleak sound finds an accurate counterpart in U.K. artists Jake and Dinos Chapman ( http://www.jakeanddinoschapman.com/ ) and their grand vision of suffering; the Chapman’s controversial art piece “F*cking Hell” has become the front cover art of TAKE THE CURSE. The pieces of this masterpiece used for the album’s art have never been released to the public until now. The CD version of the album will come with two alternative covers, and first 200 orders through the label Web site will receive a limited edition collectors art card set featuring the two alternative covers. The music and the artwork dredge the turpitude of humanity and explore the utter horror of possibility. Prepare to be engulfed by torrential riffing!

-Eyehategod Announce Two Special Chicago Performances

New Orleans sludge metal titans Eyehategod performed a special one-off show last Friday at Emo’s in Austin, Texas. Those lucky enough to be in attendance witnessed the band play their coveted first two full-lengths — IN THE NAME OF SUFFERING and TAKE AS NEEDED FOR PAIN respectively — in their entirety! Needless to say, it ruled in unimaginable ways. Elaborated Hellbound.ca of the historic spectacle: “…The collective anticipation and tension swelled like a ripening fruit ready to burst… The slow riffs of [Jimmy] Bower [also the drummer of Down], Brian Patton [also Soilent Green’s guitarist] and relatively new bassist Gary Mader sounded as though they were literally being strummed beneath the surface of a murky Louisiana swamp, such was their slow and powerful delivery… It was a thunderous, distinctly southern kind of blues ‘n’ doom poured through a punk-rock filter.”

Eyehategod — Bower, Patton, Mader, vocalist Mike Williams and drummer Joey LaCaze — will kick off their long-anticipated U.S. tour alongside psychedelic black metallers Nachtmystium (from June 4 – 15) and a rotating roster of other eclectic openers on June 3 at Blackbooth in Orlando, Florida. The band will pillage through 16 cities before winding down in Chicago for two dates at the Empty Bottle where they will again perform IN THE NAME OF SUFFERING (June 19) and TAKE AS NEEDED FOR PAIN (June 20) in their entirety. by Patrick Brower (pwbrower@gmail.com)

-Anybody watch ABC’s “Cougartown?” The song that played all thru last week’s graduation scene was Nuno Bettencourt’s “Pursuit Of Happiness” from his 1997 solo album SCHIZOPHONIC.

-Pretty sweet news last week about Todd La Torre joining Crimson Glory, right? Thanks to those provided video files it sounds like he’s a great fit for them. And that got me thinking about other bands that are due to release new albums with new singers, so let’s take a look at a few. Keep in mind when reading that I was very much a fan of Quiet Riot’s QR (featuring Paul Shortino on vocals in place of Kevin DuBrow) and Motley Crüe’s self-titled release with John Corabi replacing Vince Neal. In fact, that is still my favorite Crüe disc.

-First up is Balance Of Power. This British power/prog outfit rose to prominence in the late ’90s with Lance King on vocals (but even he wasn’t their original singer). When he and the band parted ways in 2002, they released an amazing recorded called HEATHEN MACHINE with Biomechanical’s John K. as their new vocalist. Next they released a live retrospective, also with John K., and then he left the band in 2004. In 2005 Balance Of Power announced Corey Brown (Magnitude 9) as their current singer. Since then? Nothing. Their Web site says they’re writing their next album, but it’s said that since 2006. I love this band and was blown away by their work with John K. I was very excited to hear the new stuff, seeing as how each singer has only strengthened the band, yet now, four years later, I can only wonder if they’re, in fact, done as a band. Radio silence is never encouraging.

-Next is the former thrash/speed, current power metallers, Angel Dust. Their last release, OF HUMAN DONDAGE, came out in 2002 and it was SO good! In 2005 vocalist Dirk Thurisch left the band and was replaced with Carsten Kaiser. The band entered the studio in 2006 to write and record the next Angel Dust album, TALES FROM ASHES AND DUST. It’s scheduled to be released in December 2010, yet the vocalist is listed as… Dirk Thurisch. So I have no idea what’s going on and who is singing, but I’ve been waiting for this album for a long time.

-Moving along, and thankfully to a band with a more linear member structure, we come to Pyramaze. Started with Balance of Power’s Lance King on vocals, he left after two albums and was replaced by Iced Earth’s Matt Barlow. Barlow left after his only album, IMMORTAL, and their current vocalist is Urban Breed (Tad Morose, Bloodbound). However the bankruptcy of their record label and problems with their last tour have cost the band a ton of money so things are progressing more slowly than before. They are said to be working on the next album.

-And I’m stopping here. These were the bands that came to me when I decided to write this, so I’m sticking with them. If you have any bands to add, lemme know and I’ll do a follow up.

WILD SIDE – SPEED DEVIL (A-) Escape Music, 2010
12 tracks, RT: 46:28
[ http://www.myspace.com/wildsidetheband }
What would happen if you took Motley Crue’s SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, mixed it with Ratt’s OUT OF THE CELLAR and added in a healthy dose of John Sykes riffs and George Lynch flash? Norway’s Wild Side apparently decided to find out on SPEED DEVIL, the band’s excellent new album of hot and heavy anthems guaranteed to have you reaching to crank up the volume. SPEED DEVIL begins with a bizarre but fun intro and it’s right into opener “Live Forever,” a high energy rocker that really sets the mood for the rest of the disc. Wild Side kind of have a one-track mind when it comes to lyrical themes, and it’s…sex! What else? You’ll hear what I mean on steamy tracks like “Play With Me,” “Wild One” and “Need To Deliver.” Great songs here, with hummable melodies that almost require an immediate replay. Andy LaRocque handled the production and did an amazing job on the mix, the songs positively jumping out of the speakers with razor sharp guitars, kinetic bass, pounding drums and piercing vocals all well to the fore. Not much to complain about here, although Joachim Berntsen’s vocals do bear a little too much resemblance to Vince Neil and obligatory ballad “Love For You” seems unnecessary. If you’re a fan of early ’80s hard rock and metal (and you know you are!), I highly recommend checking out SPEED DEVIL, it’ll take you back…
