-Crimson Glory Announces New Lead Vocalist

[Note: This is from Blabbermouth.net/ . – Steve]

Florida-based metallers Crimson Glory have announced Todd La Torre as their new lead vocalist and front man to lead them into the next era. The decision was made official on April 29, 2010.

Commented lead guitarist Jon Drenning: “We (the band) all sat down and discussed the idea, and all agreed that Todd was a perfect fit. He embodies so many of the qualities that made [late Crimson Glory singer] Midnight such a superb singer/songwriter. In Todd, we have found a healthy, light-hearted, happy-go-lucky character with a winning personality and a true love and passion for what he does and the music he creates. He amazed us from the get-go, and it is the general opinion of the band that, with Todd La Torre, Crimson Glory will sound as good, if not better than ever.

“We, as a band, have had the opportunity to work with some extremely talented singers (Midnight, David Van Landing and Wade Black). Ultimately we agreed that a relatively unknown singer would be beneficial; Todd is a blank canvas in the sense that he doesn’t have any other prior musical history that could affect the overall sound that defines Crimson Glory. The fact that he is a local talent with exceptional vocal and songwriting skills made this the ideal situation and most suitable to our creative endeavors for the future.”

Added bassist Jeff Lords: “It’s refreshing to know that in a highly competitive industry, one that is seemingly operating in an uncaring, indifferent universe, that plain ol’ good luck can come around at just the right time, as Todd is the perfect addition to Crimson Glory, and he is someone with whom I truly look forward to collaborating.”

Stated drummer Dana Burnell: “I feel great about Todd joining the band. His ability to sing the vintage songs is unmatched. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing him sing over some of our original recorded tracks as well as in rehearsals, where the very first night he blew me away.

“Since Midnight’s death, myself and the other surviving members of Crimson Glory have really strengthened our bond; we are closer than we’ve ever been, and now with the addition of Todd I’m extremely excited about the band’s future.”

Commented guitarist Ben Jackson: “Todd is a very talented singer who expresses himself incredibly well. I’m looking forward to working together and breaking new ground with Crimson Glory. I would also like to offer my very best wishes to my friend Wade Black, who in my opinion, is a tremendous vocalist and front man, and will always be part of the Crimson Glory family.”

La Torre made his first (and as yet only) public appearance with Crimson Glory at ProgPower USA X as one of seventeen guest performers (including Wade Black, vocalist on the ASTRONOMICA album and subsequent European tour, and David Van Landing, who replaced Midnight briefly for the STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL U.S. tour) paying tribute to Midnight, the band’s original singer.

Midnight passed away late last year due to long-term health complications.

Essentially unknown to the mainstream progressive metal scene, La Torre spent 22 years earning his stripes and solidifying himself as an unquestionable talent behind the drum kit of various hard rock and heavy metal projects in the Tampa Bay, Florida area; however, his vocal aspirations went largely unfulfilled until last year when Matt LaPorte (Jon Oliva’s Pain), who had only heard La Torre sing on a few occasions, casually mentioned to Drenning that he might make a nice addition to the already stellar lineup of performers the band had accumulated. It was only a short time later that La Torre found himself at the band’s rehearsal studio, and the pieces began to fall into place.

The members of Crimson Glory also commented on singer Wade Black’s involvement with the band thus far, and on continuing without Black as the front man of Crimson Glory.

“It should be noted that Wade was very respectful to Todd and made him feel at home,” the group states. “That spoke volumes to us about him as a person and his strong character. He was accommodating and a gentleman in every sense of the word.

“We truly appreciate Wade’s outstanding contribution as a member of Crimson Glory and on his performance on the ASTRONOMICA album. He has been an integral part of the Crimson Glory legacy; replacing Midnight was no small task and he accomplished it admirably and with all of his heart while adding his own sound and style to our music. It was difficult for him to have to come in and sing an album bearing the weight of the scrutiny and expectations of Midnight loyal fan base on his shoulders, but he managed to get the job done with flying colors both in the studio and live onstage. We’re also extremely proud of the accomplishments that Wade has achieved since then with his other projects.

“Wade will always be a part of our family and we hope to share the stage with him in the future when the opportunity presents itself. However, at this point in the band’s history, it’s time to go in a new direction, and we are united in feeling that Todd would be a more ideal fit for the sound and style we wish to create and help us advance far into the future.”

Drenning also hints at an upcoming European tour dates, as well as new material: “We are presently making plans to head to Europe this winter for a short roster of shows before kicking off the spring/summer tour season. Dates will be forthcoming as the time nears, but we’re definitely looking forward to stretching our Crimson Glory wings, getting back out on the road and showcasing Todd to our fans across the globe. Indeed, Midnight is irreplaceable in our hearts, but I have absolute faith that our fans will come to appreciate and love Todd as we have, and without a doubt will see what we saw that first night, and at ProgPower, and in the months since then.” Drenning adds, “The band has just started working with Todd writing some amazing new music that I believe our fans will truly enjoy; it is Crimson Glory in every sense of the word and then some, and Todd La Torre is the voice that will carry us onward through this new millennium.”

-The Rumors Are True: Joey Belladonna Rejoins Anthrax!

[Note: This is from http://www.joeybelladonna.com/ . – Tim]

With rumors swirling since Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and bassist Frank Bello were seen together with former Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna late last month in New York, the band — Benante, Bello, and guitarists Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano — is elated to announce that Belladonna has officially rejoined the band. In his once and current capacity, Belladonna will make his first appearance with Anthrax this summer when the band joins Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth — The Big Four founding bands of the thrash genre — to co-headline a series of Sonisphere Festivals in ten European cities, as well as playing a handful of Anthrax-headlined shows (itinerary is below).

“I am super excited about this,” said Scott Ian. “Joey and the rest of the band came to see me play at a club in New York, I hadn’t seen Joey for years, since the end of the reunion tour. Joey taps me on the shoulder, instant big hug, it felt like no time had gone by. The band dynamic is an interesting one — in Anthrax, Joey and I spent so many years of our lives together, we grew up together, we know each other so well, so it was like no time was lost.”

Belladonna, an essential part of Anthrax’s lineup from 1985 to 1992, sang on some of the band’s most popular albums including SPREADING THE DISEASE, AMONG THE LIVING and PERSISTENCE OF TIME. He had reunited with original members of Anthrax for the 2005 – 2007 “Among The Living Tour,” but this situation is different. Explained Belladonna, “I had been in touch with Charlie and Frank, then I got a call from their manager who said that everyone wanted me back in the band. I thought, ‘are you guys for real? You want me up there, fronting the band like it was before?’ I was thrilled. We’ve already started to reconnect with the old ways of having conversations. Everything is easy going and feels really good.”

“We’re going to do these summer shows and gel as a band,” explained Charlie Benante, “get comfortable playing with each other again, and the energy from that should go right into making new music.”

Immediately following the final Sonisphere festival in early August, the band will fly back to the U.S. and begin writing and rehearsing for a new album that’s expected to be out in early 2011.

“We’ve got an unusual luxury of hindsight,” added Ian. “We finished an album a year ago, we’ve lived with those 12 songs since then, and we can look back on them and see what we really love and what we can make even better, especially with Joey back in the fold.”

Added Benante, “There are five or six songs from a year ago that we don’t want to change, we love them the way they are, other than having Joey making them his own with his vocals. Then there’s another five or six that we may want to rework, and then there are a bunch of other tunes that are still in the early stages, that we want to finish.

“The band has been on an emotional roller coaster since last summer,” Benante continued, “but I think everything that we’ve had to deal with during that time was pushing us toward this, to Joey being back in Anthrax, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect or appropriate. To have Joey with us playing these shows with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth is the way it should be — as Anthrax’s vocalist from ’85 to ’92, he was part of ‘The Big Four.'”

“John was a real stand up guy about the situation,” said Ian, about John Bush, Anthrax’s vocalist from ’92 – ’05. “He knew we wanted to move forward at full speed, that we needed a total commitment to Anthrax, and he knew that wasn’t what he wanted. We certainly wish John well. We’ve had so many great times with him, and we appreciate his stepping in last summer at the last minute, and performing with us since then. He will always be an integral part of the Anthrax family.”

With worldwide sales in excess of 10-million, Anthrax is about to celebrate its 29th year as a band. Over its career, Anthrax has received multiple Gold and Platinum albums, multiple Grammy nominations, and a host of other accolades from the press, industry and fans.

Complete dates for Anthrax — with Joey Belladonna on vocals — are as follows:

-Forbidden Announces Album Title + More Details!

Reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrashers Forbidden continue their work at Sonic Room/Audio Voyage Studios in Livermore, California recording their upcoming new album OMEGA WAVE. Album artwork has been commissioned from Kent Mathieu (Forbidden, Exodus, Autopsy, Exhorder). The album is being produced by Forbidden guitarist / songwriter Craig Locicero and Tim Narducci. All tracks will be mixed by Sean Beavan (Slayer, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails).

States Locicero:
“After a year of writing and a couple of months recording this son of a bitchin’ album, we’ve finally decided to call it OMEGA WAVE. It certainly would have been easy to self-title it, but anyone who knows anything about Forbidden and our history understands that we spend a considerable amount of time thinking about these things. That’s just what we do. OMEGA WAVE seemed most fitting and it’s one of the thrashiest songs on the record! An ‘omega wave’ is the feeling of impending doom that hangs over everyone in these difficult times, more so than any other era in history. Many feel that our time is almost up, partly because it has been written and predicted in almost every ancient society; also because most people can tell which way the wind is blowing, if you know what I mean. So the question is, is this all really happening by design or is it a self-fulfilled, man-made hysteria that we are creating by accepting it in our collective consciousness? Either way, it’s a black wave of negative energy that exists to billions of people. That is the Omega Wave.”

On why the band sought out the artist Forbidden’s career began with:
“Within the last few months, we’ve reconnected with the original artist who painted the artwork for our first two albums, FORBIDDEN EVIL and TWISTED INTO FORM: Kent Mathieu. I love the work he’s done with everyone, but there is no denying that the first two covers he did for Forbidden are a couple of the most iconic pieces for our genre. Getting Kent on board was a coupe and he gets us like no other artist could. He’s got a pile of lyrics to inspire him and he fully understands the OMEGA WAVE concept. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with. Should be perfect!”

On the dedication of co-producer Tim Narducci:
“Tim and I have know each other since ’86, when I was in Forbidden Evil and he was in Tyrannicide! We were under-aged kids drinking beer in the Ruthie’s Inn parking lot! That’s some history and he knows his metal! Some of my peers have been grilling me on what it’s like to produce a record for the first time. It’s time consuming and somewhat difficult to get the performances out of someone you’ve known since you were kids, but I am not doing this alone. Tim Narducci has been by my side every step of the way. We help each other stay focused and motivated. He’s excellent and catching the little things and bringing the big picture together. We also have a great engineer and person in Brad Barth, who is a recording wizard and also owns Audio Voyage/Sonic Room (where we’re tracking). I really love working with these guys. Tim, Brad, and I have been playing together in SpiralArms since 2005. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves and recording over the last five years and recently completed Spiral’s first full-length album that comes out this summer. We started recording and finished that album before we began the Forbidden record.”

On the talents of mixer Sean Beavan:
“Once we finish the recording process, everything gets into the hands of a true genius. I still can’t believe how lucky we are to have Sean to do it. Sonically, he’s very unique and on a different level. He’s produced, engineered, and mixed some of the best sounding material out there. I met Sean through my work with Rick Rubin on the Manmade God record I did in 2003. Sean mixed it and we became friends. I learned a lot from him and he really listened to my input when Rick asked him not to (ha, ha). Sean will make the Forbidden record sound like nothing else going, and that’s a great thing! Hopefully everyone will appreciate how cool and organic the tones and performances are. We set out not to make a record that sounds like anyone else besides Forbidden. I don’t feel like it could be in any better hands than Sean’s to keep the integrity of what we started all the way to the finish line.”

As a final comment on the new album, Locicero adds: “Whatever OMEGA WAVE turns out to be will ultimately rest upon my shoulders. I picked the team and that’s fine with me. I can live with that.”

Song titles on the new Forbidden album are as follows:

· Alpha Century
· Forsaken At The Gates
· Swine
· Immortal Wounds
· Hopenosis
· Adapt Or Die
· Inhuman Race
· Behind The Mask
· Dragging My Casket
· Overthrow
· Omega Wave

THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY, the band’s strongest album so far, deals with the most extreme and horrible fears and pains of mankind, the deepest depths of the human soul, the eternal struggle between good and evil, the life consuming beast. THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY will take every metalhead on a trip to the battlefield of the armies of the undead and the darkness. The war between heaven and hell has finally begun.

The CD will include the Iron Maiden cover “Killers” as a bonus track!

Formed in 1993, Fatal Embrace is not a band you would accuse of jumping on a bandwagon because Thrash Metal seems hip again. In fact, these young men started out in the early ’90s (remember that was the time when Thrash was dead) as a hard hitting metal band to praise the glorious days of the ’80s when bands like Slayer, Exodus, Metallica, Venom, Sodom and Kreator ruled the musical extremes. Fatal Embrace never compromised and over the years they released three albums on different labels. THE ULTIMATE AGGRESSION (1999), LEGIONS OF ARMAGEDDON (2002) and DARK POUNDING STEEL (2006). All of them pumped up with adrenaline, energy and power.

THE EMPIRES OF INHUMANITY will be released June 4/7 via Metal Blade Records in Europe and on June, 8 through Metal Blade in North America!

The band plays and records all of their music, every note, and will be taking the stage to perform LIVE in 22 cities beginning on May 31st. They are currently in their Red Bank, NJ studio finalizing their self-titled album, due to release September 14th and the celebrated first single, “Mind On Me,” is available digitally on June 1st. Besides their remarkable talent and community esteem, Six Volt is highly respected for their charitable ways — 5% of the band’s income goes to the homeless and causes that help the environment.

Six Volt will headline the entire tour, aptly titled “Youth Rock Live!” The shows will take place at various Simon Malls in the Tri-State area and has already lined up sponsors in Shuffleboard Records and The Youth Arts Forum, who will be the official presenters of the event. Paul Reed Smith Guitars, http://www.prsguitars.com/ has also joined the tour as a sponsor and Six Volt will be giving away (1) PRS SE model guitar to a lucky fan at each of their 22 Simon Mall shows. Granger Whitelaw, Jr. who is on the Artist roster at PRS plays a custom PRS McCarty made by Paul himself. “I will play this guitar until I am buried with it,” said Granger. “It is the Stradivarius of guitars and has tones only found in a PRS.” Paul Smith, Founder of PRS says, “I met Granger about two years ago and have seen him grow musically. We are honored to support him as a player and Six Volt.”

Each date features special opening act and talented musician, Whitney Kelly, also a New Jersey native (Tinton Falls). Kelly will open for Six Volt as well as play during the band’s break so they can get out and meet the fans. “This tour is very exciting,” says Whitney. “With thousands of fans on YouTube.com, Facebook and MySpace the tour will give me a chance to meet many of them while working with a great band, for a good cause.” Whitney has performed live at many venues including PNC Art Center, Liberty State Park, Manhattan Children’s Museum and the Count Basie Theater. She also recently completed a music video with Jake T. Austin from Disney’s “Wizards Of Waverly Place” for her original song “Watching Over You.”

Six Volt, respected as a young band that plays all their music without any professional backup musicians, includes members Nichole Deppe (Vocals), Granger Whitelaw, Jr. (Guitar), Joe Cilento (Guitar), Jake Wood (Bass), and Robby Wood (Drums). The band’s fresh sound and talent has earned them high esteem in the Tri-State area and their audience is quickly expanding. In 1982 Daniel Band burst on the scene with their song “I’m Sorry,” the lead single from their debut album, ON ROCK. Daniel Band was one of the very first hard rock/metal bands with a Christian message. This debut was raw and full of energy that expanded the scope of hard music in the church. In 1982, there were four hard rock bands with a Christian message that could be found in your local bookstore. There was Jerusalem, Rez Band, Petra, Barnabas — and now Daniel Band. Christian rockers thought they’d found pure gold in Daniel Band. With those Geddy Lee (Rush) vibes and the wild and dirty guitar tones (ala Ted Nugent, early Kiss, AC/DC) throughout the album, fans knew they had something special with ON ROCK.

This 2010 Collector’s Edition has been digitally re-mastered (far better than the 2001 reissue on Magdalene Records) and features two brand new songs, “It All Turns To Rain” and “I Give You All,” recorded by the band in 2009 specifically for this special release! To commemorate this classic album, Retroactive Records asked Christian hard rock/metal historian Keven Crothers (White Throne Blog) to reflect on the significance of this historic album in the liner notes. Long out of print and hard-to-find, now is your chance to capture the hard edged charm of the debut release from Daniel Band on this Collector’s Edition release. ON ROCK has never sounded or looked better!

*White Throne Blog: “ON ROCK is powerful rock ‘n’ roll that glorifies Jesus without hesitation… Make no mistake, fans of Bachman Turner Overdrive, Foghat and April Wine should eat ON ROCK for breakfast.”

Old school thrash is in vogue again with the debut full length from Disaffection. After recording an impressive four-song demo, these Brazilians have upped the ante in every possible way. Disaffection has done their homework, crafting song after song of thrash goodness, with killer riffing, well-placed solos, and in your face vocals. The songs aren’t just facsimiles of your favorite tracks from yesteryear, though. Disaffection manages to maintain the attitude and sincerity of ’80s thrash while incorporating their own flavor, creating a sound that pays homage to the pioneers of classic thrash, while remaining relevant to the current scene. The band is comfortable blazing ahead at 100 miles an hour in full-on thrash frenzy, slowing it down to elicit a controlled headbang, and then ripping your head off again — all within the same song. The production is slick while retaining that dirty thrash sound. The killer hooks dig deep, keeping you coming back for more while causing serious neck pain from obsessive, compulsive headbanging! Fans of Slayer, Warbringer, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Kreator, and anyone who lives for thrash or even just in your face heavy metal will feast on these 10 songs. Join Disaffection as they lead you into the new thrash revolution!

“Disaffection unashamedly wear their influences on their sleeves, sounding like a combination of Exodus and Slayer complete with machine gun riffing, shouted gang vocals, fast guitar licks, and those all important mosh beats and quick double bass assaults.”

This heavy metal classic was originally recorded in 1989 but never saw a proper label release until 2005 (limited to just 1,000 copies!). The 2010 Collector’s Edition features stunning new artwork, while the music has been re-mixed, re-mastered and partially re-recorded. We extend a special thanks to the amazing Robert Sweet (Stryper) for providing real drums on this Collector’s Edition (the original release featured a drum machine). We asked him to “really let loose” and to “drum like you’ve always wanted to — with no restrictions” and that’s exactly what he did! The result is a world-class heavy metal release with drums by a bonafide superstar! In addition, there are three tracks included on the Collector’s Edition that did not appear on the original release — an Intro track, an Outro track (both instrumental), but the real gem is the Robert Sweet Drum Solo entitled “Area 51.” This is the very first Robert Sweet drum solo (studio recorded) released since the legendary Roxx Regime demo! Don’t expect candy-coated glam metal here. Final Axe specializes in big, neck bulging, fist extending, righteous riffs. For fans of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Armored Saint and early Bloodgood. Enjoy!

Doom duels doom on the new opus from My Silent Wake and The Drowning. My Silent Wake is already well established in the U.K. death / doom scene, having released three full-length albums on Bombworks Records. The Drowning has also been a force in the U.K. scene, having released several albums of their own. Over the years, the two bands have shared the stage on many occasions and have forged a great friendship, so the idea of sharing an album together was a no-brainer. The result is a feast of death / doom that is quite diverse and demonstrates the versatility, creativity, and musicianship of each band. Each band contributes several new original songs while paying homage to their relationship by each covering a song from the other. My Silent Wake begins with the first four songs, starting with a cover of Attrition’s “I Am (Eternity),” including guest vocals from Attrition, a brand new original song, a brilliant acoustic cover of The Drowning’s “Devoid Of Light,” and their longest and perhaps most diverse song to date, “Rebirth,” clocking in at over 23 minutes. The Drowning then takes the stage with the crushing song “The Doomsday Feire,” continues with two more brand new songs and then completes the album with an amazing heavy interpretation of My Silent Wake’s” A Photograph,” originally from the acoustic disc of THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY. Both bands deliver with memorable melodies, crushing riffs, and amazing sonic and dynamic contrasts to weave a musical tapestry that can both sooth the soul and crush you with its heaviness. The intricacies of the songs are expertly woven, making them enjoyable and accessible on a first listen while growing richer and rewarding the listener on continued listens, allowing the listener to truly experience the compositions. This is a required purchase for fans of My Dying Bride, Candlemass, Trouble, Iced Earth, Dead Can Dance, death and doom metal, and well-crafted songs. Prepare to be immersed.

Band: Ballbreaker
Genre: Hard Rock
Release Date: Out Now

As they continued to perform their tribute to the music of AC/DC to sold out clubs, concerts, and fairs across the state they felt that the time was ripe to release an all original CD. The year 2000 was a landmark year for Ballbreaker, in that it saw the release of the classic, independently released disc BALLBREAKER 1 that features such favorites as “Inside Out,” “Whiskey, Women, & Rock,” and “Give Me A Reason.” The disc found quick acceptance from fans and press alike. This new CD gained them exposure in magazines and on radio stations throughout the United States, Italy, France, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Germany. The first track off the disc, “Inside Out,” was also used in ads for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills during their 2001/2002 season.

2003 saw them as a featured artist on a world-wide release called VOLTAGE OVERLOAD, on Sharkbite Records. This was an AC/DC tribute disc with 10 of the world’s top AC/DC acts paying homage to the hard rock legends. Ballbreaker appeared performing the song “Let Me Put My Love Into You,” recorded live during their support of Loverboy.

2005 found the band celebrating their 10th anniversary with the release of their second full-length original CD, HANGMAN’S TREE. Ballbreaker’s newest, hard-hitting platter of straight-ahead rock n’ roll quickly found critical success, being called “a power rock n’ roll bomb” by French music distributor, Alain Brennus, and being ranked in the top ten hard rock releases of 2005 by Canadian webzine sleazeroxx.com, which also listed the track “Little Misunderstood” in the top 25 songs of 2005. The critical acclaim soon translated into a distribution deal with Houston, Texas based, Perris Records, and endorsements by companies such as Coffin Cases out of Los Angelas, California. As the buzz around allbreaker’s “Hangman’s Tree” continued to grow, the band found themselves with appearances in major publications such as Rock N Roll Damnation, and Revolver Magazine. Yet another highlight for the band was that four tracks from the disc appeared in the independent, feature length film, “A Night At The Cat,” released by Daydream Productions. The Boys in Ballbreaker rounded out 2005 with appearances on various radio and television programs such as, “The Sunday Night Shakedown With Frank Deblase,” “The Headbanger’s Basement With Darrell Michaels,” and Time Warner’s “Radio TV.”

As Ballbreaker embarks on its second decade of rock n’ roll their future looks brighter than ever. Currently, the band is set to unleash their third CD, DADDY LONG LEGS. Band: Sparkling Bombs
Label: Nicotine Records
Street Date: Out Now
From: France/Germany
Sounds Like: early Manics, T-Rex, Placebo, Suede, New York Dolls…
File Under: glitter rock

Sparkling Bombs appeared in 2001 somewhere between an unknown galaxy and the East of France where they decided to celebrate the rebirth of glitter in their own stylish sensual modern way. Their first and introductory five-song CD FROM BUBBLEGUM FUN TO GLITTERED DEPRESSION (Coexistence Obscure/United Musics Company distribution) was released in summer 2002 and has been sold-out for a long time now.

These glamorous Bombs are keeping the trashy sexy new romantic glam rock flame alive and already toured and shared international stages with bands as various as the New York Dolls, The Lords Of The New Church, the Offspring, Louis XIV, Nashville Pussy, American Heartbreak, The Fuzztones, Peter Pan Speedrock, Kill The Young, Peppermint Creeps, Walter Lure (The Heartbreakers), The Bellrays, Sin City Sinners, Trashcan Darlings, Rebel Rebel, etc.

The first full-length CD of the band, titled DEAD DREAMS FROM THE SILVER GUTTER (Coexistence Obscure/Zone 51/Musicast distribution), was officially released in September 2004 and has often been described in the worldwide media as an elegant mix of dark glamorous rock and catchy pop tunes with incisive punk rock ‘n’ roll guitars. After touring all over Europe and in the U.K., the Sparkling Bombs released a new CD untitled DIAMOND SKIND (Mascara Drama, 2006), seven songs filled with power pop, boogie and hard rock ‘n’ roll touches.

The band went back to the U.K. in summer 2007 and played more shows in Germany, France and Italy. One year later, the Sparkling Bombs finally fly out to the U.S.A. (July 2008) completing a successful West Coast tour. SPRAY PAINT PRAYERS, the Bombs’ new album in which their noir-pop sound collides with seductive ’70s rock ‘n’ roll influences is now available through Nicotine Records. With members both based in France and Germany, the Sparkling Bombs defined Europe and the world as their playground.

“WOW! Hey, kids, rock ‘n’ roll! I’m sorry to confess that America does not have bands this good, anymore. The Sparkling Bombs are tantalizingly alive, French glamsters, bubblegum-sinners, with total power-pop hearts, exceptional guitar heroics, and a glossy, new wave sheen. I never expected a new band like this, to be so sexy, so groovy, so utterly listenable. This is fabulous radio music from another time. Lush, spooky, synth pop songcraft from the late night bar. Really catchy, sweet, gum smacking, heartbreaking music with poetic imagery about innocence corrupted, poisoned love, pop culture kidnapped, the decay of the after hours lifestyle, nostalgia for an opium dream of ‘Velvet Goldmine’ color, drama, sedition, and romantic danger. They totally grabbed my attention, sucked me in, and easily won me over. If you liked Silver, or Semi-Precious Weapons, you’ll likely, love the Sparkling Bombs”
-Geordie Pleathur, http://www.sugarbuzzmagazine.com

“They play that poppy glam rock with strong ’70s inspiration, and they play it really well! Sparkling Bombs are a great band, playing fun glitzy pop rock, a band you can thoroughly enjoy listening too! Nothing new really but fun just the same.” Rating 8/10
-Barry Gennard, Glitzine U.K., http://www.glitzine.net

“Stereotypically stylish French men flirting with the best of British glam, Sparkling Bombs have long delivered a live show every bit as dazzling as their profile on paper suggests it ought to be Easily worth the effort of slapping on the glitter and glad rags for.”

About Nil Durden

Simple melodies. Open tunings. Straightforward lyrics. All stripped down to bare essentials. Nil Durden combines his singer-songwriter attitude with raw rock ‘n’ roll sounds, blending his red dirt acoustic guitars with a pounding rhythm section. And with a ’61 Strat on steroids.

After the years he’d spent in bands, Nil Durden first approached the career of solo artist in 2007. “There was so much in those songs that something was missing. I had to get back to basics, just me and my acoustic guitar.” From furious riffs to soulful ballads, his clear-cut tunes are a blend of alternative & classic rock with a subtle southern feel.

Backed by a ’70s-style, three-piece rock band — as if Jeff Buckley met The Black Crowes — his acoustic driven rock ‘n’ roll hits the listener with its live energy and in-your-face immediacy.

Nil’s from Italy, “but you’d never guess that by listening to the record,” says Steve Fenton of The Mag — he’s bilingual and sings with perfect American accent. His debut E.P., HEADS OR TAILS, was recorded in Italy in 2008 and finalized in London by John Davis (U2, Led Zeppelin, R.E.M.). Nil Durden has then been working on new songs and looking for a label that would be interested in producing a complete album.

In the meanwhile, here’s what critics said about HEADS OR TAILS:

“An exceptional E.P…. four songs that smoulder like hot coals!” – Steve Fenton, The Mag.
“Lyrically the E.P. is amazing, vocally tasteful…” – Brian Rademacher, Rock Eyez.
“A superb diverse E.P. that leaves you wanting the full album. Nil Durden is a solo artist to keep your eyes on.” – Fireworks Magazine

*** PRESS RELEASE #12 ***
-Classic Melodic Rock Band Beyond The Labyrinth Releases Third Single “Oceans Apart” For Upcoming Album CHAPTER III – STORIES!

Beyond The Labyrinth (“BTL,” Classic Melodic Rock, BE) has always been a band out of the ordinary. For their upcoming third album CHAPTER III – STORIES, the band decided to approach it from a “Work In Progress” point of view, releasing new songs single by single through iTunes and as limited-edition hard copies, only finalising it the album after all the singles have been released.

In this “Work In Progress” approach, BTL now releases a third single “Ocean Apart,” a powerful ballad written by singer Jo De Boeck and guitar player Geert Fieuw. The second song on the single, “Where Kindred Spirits Meet,” is a mid tempo Hard Rock anthem.

Previously released singles under this approach are “Saturation Point/Hypersensitive” (September 2009) and “Hidden Agenda/Stories Waiting To Be Told” (December 2009).

Background Stories

“Oceans Apart”

Love works in mysterious ways, as does music. As they say, when one door opens, another window of opportunity opens.

People who read the fine print on a CD (the so-called “the credits”) already know that (BTL singer) Jo De Boeck co-wrote the music for “For Eternity” (featured on the 2008 CASTLES IN THE SAND album) with (BTL guitar player, Keyboard player) Geert Fieuw, but when Jo came into the studio one evening, announcing “I wrote a song, but we need to work a bit on the music,” he was being way too humble. After having heard the melody line and lyrics, Geert’s jaw dropped — this was not just simply a song, this was the best BTL song he ever heard, even with hit potential…

“Oceans Apart,” a love story, underwent quite some rearranging until the band settled on “let’s make it a power ballad mix of AOR and Marillion approach.” After all, hit ballads by Guns N’ Roses The Scorpions, Bon Jovi have proven the age-old adage: “It’s the wildest rockers that write the best love songs.”

“Where Kindred Spirits Meet”

Jamming along to some new ideas one day early in 2009, (Beyond The Labyrinth bass player) Gerry said “Oh by the way, I have this bass riff, can we do something with it?” Now admitted, the bass is an underestimated instrument — providing drive and the missing link between rhythm and melody, most people tend to overlook its function. However, this particular bass riff had so much drive and inspirition that Geert grabbed his keyboard and soon the rough shape of “Where Kindred Spirits Meet” was laid out. During several songwriting sessions, Geert perfectioned the song into a mid tempo anthem with a memorable chorus and some great lyrics — in a typical BTL sound setting.

When someone passes away, most religions believe that he transcends to a different stage, an afterlife. Even considering it from a mere scientifical point of view, one has to wonder where the deceased person’s energy has gone to — the principle of conservation of energy in a global universe still applies.

“Where Kindred Spirits Meet” is a journey into the metaphysical, an ode to those who have left us — and a message that they will not be forgotten.

Beyond The Labyrinth is:

Jo De Boeck – Vocals
Geert Fieuw – Guitars, Keyboards
Gerry Verstreken – Bass

drums on “Oceans Apart” and “Where Kindred Spirits Meet” played by John Van Tongelen

Classic Rock Revisited

-Man, Accept’s new “Teutonic Terror” video is awesome. It’s got a post-apocalyptic vibe like Kiss’ “Lick It Up,” but with more tanks and fire, and less girls. 🙂 There’s also a very cool little homage to the RESTLESS AND WILD album cover at the end, too. I was talking to Neal about this video — I said watching it made me feel like a 14-year-old kid again, and that’s a good thing. I’m excited to have Accept back. Rock.

-The news bit about the My Silent Wake / The Drowning split album cracked me up. It’s totally cool that each band covers one of the other’s songs, but then the one band put a 23-minute song on there, too! Album hogs!!! 🙂

-In my current playlist: Triumph – GREATEST HITS: REMIXED (TML Entertainment Inc./Universal), At Vance – RIDE THE SKY (AFM Records), Cherry St. – MONROE/X RATED (REISSUE) (Perris Records).

Haken’s debut album AQUARIUS has been causing quite a stir in the prog community, with many singing the band’s praises as the next big thing; whether it lives up to the hype or not really depends on your penchant for the idiosyncrasies of this style, for they are all here: long, drawn out songs (“Celestial Elixir” clocks in at almost 17 minutes), inventive if sometimes jarring arrangements, bizarre melodic themes, obscure lyrical content and crack instrumentation. Still with me? Okay, Haken may just be for you. Although Haken cannot be directly compared to any one band, you can hear the influence of traditional and contemporary heavyweights ranging from Genesis, Marillion and Yes on the vintage side to the more modern elements found in the music of Dream Theater, Opeth and Pain Of Salvation. AQUARIUS takes some dedicated listening to “get,” as curve balls are thrown on songs such as “The Point Of No Return,” “Streams,” and “Drowning In The Flood,” and you’ll really need to eat your Wheaties for aforementioned marathon track “Celestial Elixir,” but if you persevere I think your patience will be rewarded with some inspired material. AQUARIUS is certainly not for everyone, and those unaccustomed to the avant-garde approach may want to wade into this slowly and cautiously, but as initially off-putting as some aspects of Haken’s music can be (eg; carnival music, pop vocals), it does make for an interesting aural experience. Full points for the musicianship and creativity, the overall score balanced by the somewhat difficult accessibility.

I was fortunate to see Judas Priest on the original BRITISH STEEL tour way back in 1980, and little did I suspect then that almost 30 years later I would see them performing that iconic album in its entirety, delivering the material with just as much energy and passion! I’ve been looking forward to this package since seeing them in Atlanta last August, and I can with great confidence tell you it has been worth the wait. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you about the album BRITISH STEEL, as it contains several of Priest’s most familiar songs, “Breaking The Law” and “Living After Midnight,” but let me just say that this re-mastered edition sounds great, bringing to life such metal classics as “Rapid Fire,” “Metal Gods,” “Grinder,” “The Rage,” and “Steeler.” Fans of the early Priest sound will be ecstatic to know that Tom Allom has come back on board to produce the live set and he has done a fantastic job of capturing the band at their explosive best. The live CD (which is exclusive to the three-disc special/deluxe edition version) is awesome, but what really makes this package special is the DVD recorded at the Seminole Hard Rock Arena in Hollywood, Florida. Blasting out of the gate with “Rapid Fire,” the band run through BRITISH STEEL with the same determination and fervor as when the album first came out, leaving the audience awestruck by the time “Steeler” concludes in a sea of glorious feedback. Following the consummate performance of BRITISH STEEL, the Priest continue with stunning renditions of live staples such as “The Ripper,” “Victim Of Changes,” “Freewheel Burning,” and “Diamonds And Rust,” Ian Hill and Scott Travis laying down the thunderous metal foundation while Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing impress with fiery riffs and solos. So how does Rob Halford sound, you ask? Incredible! How he keeps his voice in such good shape at this point is a mystery, but suffice it to say he is one of the few vocalists from his era who can still execute the songs with as much power, conviction and virtuosity. Great stuff, and a show I guarantee you’ll be watching repeatedly. Also included is a 30-minute interview on the making of BRITISH STEEL and a nice 20-page booklet. So here’s my verdict — this is a must-have for Judas Priest fans, probably required for traditional metalheads in general and highly recommended for those who for some unknown reason have never savored the pleasures of this most influential of heavy metal outfits. Get it!!!

PAT TRAVERS – FIDELIS (B+) Alexus Records, 2010

Criminally underrated guitarist Pat Travers is back on the scene with FIDELIS, an album that effectively recalls his ’70s/’80s hard rockin’ blues style. Kicking things off with the energetic R&B flavored “Ask Me Baby,” Pat makes it clear that he has lost little of the flair and vibrancy that found him favor with fans of creative arrangements, soulful vocals and of course, high octane guitar. Pat revisits his CRASH AND BURN era with the excellent “Edge Of Darkness,” gets into a killer groove on “I’ve Got Love To Give,” shows his bluesy side on “Save Me,” then really hits his songwriting stride with “Then I Fall.” A couple of ballads and several fairly laid-back tracks take a bit of the edge off the overall impact, but I’m confident FIDELIS will make the Travers faithful happy. A cool listen from one of the greats…
