-Iced Earth Sign Worldwide Deal With Century Media Records; Jon Schaffer Announces The Sons Of Liberty Project

There is no better way for Century Media Records to celebrate their 20th Anniversary in North America than by having the band that propelled them to success return home. Iced Earth, one of the most groundbreaking metal bands of all time is extremely excited to announce a return to their roots by partnering back up with Century Media. This new worldwide deal sees the band rejoin the label that released the legendary albums THE DARK SAGA and SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, as well as all of the early Iced Earth albums. In addition to Iced Earth, Century Media will also release Jon Schaffer’s Sons Of Liberty project.

Antje Lange, managing director of Century Media Records Europe, comments: “We are extremely happy and proud to welcome Jon Schaffer and his bands Sons Of Liberty and Iced Earth back on the label. Schaffer is one of the most talented and charismatic musicians in metal and it is an honor for us as a label to work with him. Despite an already very successful past, we feel that an even bigger success is in the cards for the future.” Schaffer further states: “I am excited about the opportunity to work on Sons Of Liberty and Iced Earth with Century Media. This was the label where my career began and there are many memories, some of them great, some of them not. However, we all grew up and are able to see eye to eye on the mission ahead: making sure my creativity gets the best possible outlet. I am much looking forward to this team delivering the goods and releasing some killer music.”

Sons Of Liberty’s BRUSH-FIRES OF THE MIND is set for a July 13th release. Schaffer handles all vocals and instrumentation for Sons Of Liberty, but the effort also features guest solos by legendary producer Jim Morris, Iced Earth guitarist Troy Seele and world-class bassist, Ruben Drake. Born from Schaffer’s desire to stimulate curiosity about a pattern of global banking corruption that is undermining the independence of people and their countries, Sons Of Liberty aims to spearhead a multi-faceted and peaceful resistance of the tyranny being wrought every day on regular people. Schaffer, in turn, has reverently named his new project after a secret organization comprised of notable United States’ patriots that formed in 1765. These patriots worked fervently to expose and resist the tyranny that the colonists were subjected to, which ultimately led to the American Revolution. For additional information regarding Sons Of Liberty and how you can learn more in its cause, head over to http://www.sons-of-liberty.net/ .

Iced Earth has confirmed four special North American shows this fall. Meant as an “Escape From The Studio,” these exclusive dates will also get fans the chance to see Sons Of Liberty on stage for their first-ever live performances.

-Wuthering Heights’ Entire New Album To Stream This Monday

This Monday, May 10th Wuthering Heights’ new album SALT will be streaming in its entirety all day at http://www.heavylaw.com/ . The album was released in North America on April 27th via progressive metal kingpin Sensory Records.

Formed at the beginning of the nineties, Wuthering Heights emerged from the Danish metal scene and immediately drawing attention of the rest of the progressive/power metal world. Their brilliant epics of symphonic speed/power metal with progressive and folk roots became the trademark of their entire discography. The band’s previous albums were very well-received by fans and media worldwide and solidified Wuthering Heights’ status as one of the most interesting bands to emerge on the international heavy metal scene.

After three years of silence from the band, the band’s fifth album, SALT, is finally available. Featuring the same lineup as seen on their last album — 2007’s THE SHADOW CABINET — this tightly knit unit have created another epic album which is undoubtedly their strongest to date. While writing its lyrics, guitarist/songwriter Erik Ravn discovered that the imagery of the sea was a perfect setting for his dark tales of personal and global Armageddon. Consequently the music has traded some of its Celtic delicacy for the rawness of the sailor’s tunes. Never before has the end of the world sounded so uplifting!

SALT Track Listing:
01. Away!
02. The Desperate Poet
03. The Mad Sailor
04. The Last Tribe (Mother Earth)
05. Tears
06. Weather The Storm
07. The Field
08. Water Of Life
09. Lost At Sea

Early Media Reactions to SALT:
“…a tidal wave of fiery power metal that steers clear of overt cliché and irksome cheesiness, and progressive composition (epitomized by 16-minute epic ‘Lost At Sea’) that keep one equally intrigued and adrenaline-pumped.” – Outburn Magazine

“From the atypical tempos and transitions to the dynamic time changes, the overall construction of this album immeasurably showcases Wuthering Heights’ versatility. And while the musicality is indeed reminiscent of a pirate adventure, there is much diversity in the tone throughout.” – L.A. Music Blog

“…Wuthering Heights would aurally beat up just about any power metal band today, they are THAT f*cking good.” – All Metal Resource

Mastercastle – LAST DESIRE

Released: June 18, 2010

Promo page inc. streaming audio:

The ultra powerful Italian metal outfit Mastercastle return on June 18th 2010 with their second album LAST DESIRE. Led by the soaring vocals of Giorgia Gueglio, the gifted guitar work of Pier Gonella and the tight rhythmic interplay of bassist Steve Vawamas and drummer Alessandro Bissa, Mastercastle made a strong impression with their debut album; the 2009 release THE PHOENIX and are back with an even more impressive follow up.

LAST DESIRE takes a similar path to its predecessor yet sees the debuts neo-classical influences toned down a little and replaced with a straighter hard rock/metal sound making for a more rocking affair. The big riffs Pier Gonella is known for are here in all their glory and Giorgia Gueglio works her vocals into new areas on the new music, whilst the bass work and potent drumming are powerfully produced creating a thunderous sound.

The straighter hard rock style of the album is represented by opener “Event Horizon,” “Away” and “Cat House.” Whilst the title track fuses a number of different elements from an almost thrash metal guitar riff to the hard rock edged chorus to make an original sound. Guitar fans will find a lot to enjoy in the instrumentals “Las Serenissima” and “Space Trip.” The former being a cover of the Italian ensemble piece “Rondo Veneziano” rearranged for rock guitar and sees the classical slant of the debut echoed. Whilst the former is a more traditional guitar instrumental fusing technical and melodic aspects that will appeal to all metal fans. The rest of the album focuses on strong heavy metal/hard rock with strong vocal melodies and memorable themes.

Vocalist Giorgio Gueglio penned all the albums lyrics covering a variety of stories all based around the different meanings of the word “desire.” The title track is about the passion that lights between two individuals. In “Will Spell” the desire means hope, the hope of escaping from reality and the will to dream anyway. In the opening track “Event Horizon” there is the desire to cross the human borderline of reason. The songs tell about the general relativity, where event horizon is a boundary in space beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer. It’s a point of no return that represents the curiosity of the man who wants to know everything new for him.

In “Scarlett” the lyrics are based on meaning behind the film “Gone With The Wind” that represents the desire as the strength to go on between the pains and discomforts of war, where a combative woman never looses her female charms. On “Cat-House” we can find two desires: the more turbid desire of a customer who turns to a prostitute to overcome the difficulties of life; and the desire of the prostitute that want to escape from that condition. “Misr” tells about the ingredients for magic or bewitched potions that responds to the desire of evocating far and unspoiled landscapes. All the lyrics are delivered with great strength and clarity from one of metal strongest new female vocalists.

The majority of what would become LAST DESIRE was written between May and September 2009. Three songs were sent to Lion Music as demo of the new album and these saw the label offer a deal for the second album. Recordings then commenced at the end of November 2009 with mixing and mastering taking place in December 2009 with the album seeing release on June 19th 2010.

01. Event Horizon
02. Misr
03. Wild Spell
04. Last Desire
05. Away
06. Space Trip
07. Jade Star
08. Great Heaven’s Climb
09. Cat-House
10. Toxie Radd
11. La Serenissima

Lion Music are proud to introduce the signing and debut album from one of the most original new progressive metal bands of recent years — Day Six. Hailing from the Netherlands, Day Six are a first class powerful four piece who produce a mammoth sound of great scope and depth on their debut album THE GRAND DESIGN.

With a sound that combines elements from across progressive music’s history, Day Six with THE GRAND DESIGN have come up with a unique take on the genre which is equal parts dark and light making great use of dynamics and textures. Comparisons could be made between a fusion of Pink Floyd, Rush, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater and Opeth where colossal guitar riffs collide and intertwine with synthesized textures and enthralling vocals for a truly mesmerizing effect.

Lyrically THE GRAND DESIGN is a concept album which focuses on an extraterrestrial spaceship that has been found in Lake Vostok, Antarctica. The storyline is following five weather scientists who did this discovery and found out about the secrecy on Extraterrestrial contact on Earth. The elite government finds out about the scientists — and to prevent them from bringing out the truth on E.T. life, they are locked in psychiatric hospitals while agents try to erase their experiences from their memories. However, the scientists develop a way to communicate telepathically with each other and with the E.T. beings. One of the scientists is writing a diary — the song “A Soul’s Documentary” is about these writings. In this way, they try to bring out the truth to the world despite the plans of the government.

Since forming in 2002, Day Six have become a mainstay on the live Dutch music scene and won two major competitions in the Netherlands: the Metal Battle and the Aardschok Metal Bash. As a result Day Six have grown to be one of the most well known progressive metal bands in the Netherlands and with the worldwide release of THE GRAND DESIGN, Lion Music will introduce the band to a wider audience.

Day Six – THE GRAND DESIGN comprises of nine tracks and clocks in at over 70 minutes and it set for release on Lion Music on June 18th 2010.

1. Massive Glacial Wall
2. Lost Identity
3. Castel Gandolfo

Be Sure TO Check Out…

Section A return after an absence of four years with their third album SACRIFICE. Led by the rich vocals of Andy Engberg and the virtuoso guitar work of Torben Enevoldsen (Acacia Avenue, Fatal Force) the band is completed by new drummer Thomas Heintzelmann (Decoy) for the pounding 10 tracks of the new album.

SACRIFICE marks a heavier and more direct approach from Section A with a more streamlined song orientated approach than its two predecessors THE SEVENTH SIGN (2003) and PARALLEL LIVES (2006). The progressive elements of its predecessors are used more sparingly this time round and lyrically there is no concept to follow yet the album does tread the a similar ground in lyric subject matter.

Album promo page inc. audio:

Pangea are a melodic hard rock band that should be a household name, as it stands the band are highly respected on the underground scene thanks to two albums released in the mid 1990s. RETROSPECTACULAR marks the release of the bands long thought lost third album.

RETROSPECTACULAR is classic Pangea, led by the punchy and expressive guitar work and vocals of Torben Lysolm, the band peddle a similar vein of rock to early Extreme with the guitar skill to match their late ’80s/early ’90s contemporaries. The album will also please fans of the band’s first two releases as the classic Pangea sound is continued here in fine style.

It may have taken over a decade to be finished but RETROSPECTACULAR finally sees release on May 21st 2010 on Lion Music.

Album promo page inc. audio:

Dreyelands are a melodic progressive metal band from Hungary. Their debut album ROOMS OF REVELATION showcases the bands versatile attitude for music being a tasty mixture of the metallic and the melodic side of progressive and power metal, combined with a touch of ’80s AOR/hard rock music.

The songs are powered by heavy guitar riffs fused with ultra melodic, memorable vocal themes along with clever arrangements. Sonically the album is big, modern and natural with no triggers on the drums and live string arrangements etc. The first half of the album has the lighter songs and as the listener gets nearer to the end they are increasingly heavier and darker.

Album promo page inc. audio:

EYEWITNESS OF LIFE is the debut album from a new act from Finland — enter Grönholm led by guitarist and song writer Mika Grönholm. The music of EYEWITNESS OF LIFE is built with an appreciation for a number of metal genres yet there is a common theme of progressive orientated riffs throughout the album, however EYEWITNESS OF LIFE avoids the monster shredding the genre is renowned for resulting in a more focused compact album for those that like strong songs first and foremost.

Nuances of artists such as Queensrÿche and Rush can be heard here and there, but the song is of main concern for Grönholm who also adds a few shades of other cultural sounds from Indian and Spanish music along with some jazz inspired progressions to add a little spice, yet the overall feel remains firmly in the metal camp and is easily accessible.

-Bronz Returns

It was twenty-five years ago today and despite serious New Years Eve hangovers Bronz were in John Henry’s rehearsal studios in London working with Max Norman on pre-production for the scheduled recording of their second album CARRIED BY THE STORM. Little did they know that it would be a quarter of a century before the music they were creating was to be finally released…

In 1984 Bronz the band were one of the first British Rock acts (N.W.B.H.M.) New Wave of British Heavy Metal, to hit America in the mid ’80s, touring their debut album TAKE BY STORM. Fronted at that time by Max Bacon on lead vocals, the band were playing 30,000 seater stadiums and their first album went on to sell well over 200,000 albums worldwide.

The single “Send Down An Angel” was frequently aired on the then-fledgling MTV in America and across Europe, with a video featuring the actress Emma Thompson. It reached a top 10 position in the U.K. rock singles charts and a top 20 in the rock album charts. Just as Bronz were set for stardom with a second major U.S. tour and album lined up, they imploded. The eagerly awaited second album gathered dust in the vaults a forgotten “gem.” Now 25 yearslater, Shaun Kirkpatrick and mastering engineer Gordon Young have digitally dusted off the master tapes to reveal a startling fresh, vibrant AOR classic.

The rest of the story:

For a while Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy) helped out on guitar until that position was filled by Michael ‘O’ Donoghue (ex Grand Prix). Max Bacon, the singer on TAKEN BY STORM, was poached by Steve Howe and Steve Hackett (they went on to form a new super group G.T.R.) and his position was soon filled by a new up and coming rock vocalist Ian Baker who features on the new album CARRIED BY THE STORM.

Clive Edwards took charge of the drums (ex Wild Horses/ Pat Travers/ UFO) and bass was covered by Lee Reddings.

Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne’s Producer) was brought in to record the band’s second album CARRIED BY THE STORM. It was recorded over several months in both the Roundhouse and PowerPlant studios in London… but as it was nearing completion the record company went into receivership.

Band lineup:
Shaun Kirkpatrick – Guitars / Roland Guitar Synth / Backing Vocals / Programming
Ian Baker – Lead / Backing Vocals
Michael ‘O’ Donoghue (ex Grand Prix) – Guitars / Backing Vocals

Gary Barnacle – Saxophone on “Carried By The Storm” & “Man Girl Machine”

-Hannah Ford Joins Bellevue Suite

In February of 2010, 19 year old drumming sensation Hannah Ford (The Hannah Ford Band & Pandorum) and Bellevue Suite front man Michael Sean crossed paths at Planet 10 Studios in Chicago. Little did anyone know what flame may have ignited as they passed by one another in the hall, introducing themselves and speaking briefly.

As the next few weeks unfolded, multiple conversations took place regarding the possibility of Hannah filling the currently vacant drum throne of Bellevue Suite. After listening to the infectious lyrics and harmonic vocals of Bellevue Suite, Hannah agreed to a meeting and a rehearsal in early April, just 2 months after the initial introduction.

It was agreed by all who attended that the rehearsal was a complete success and there was remarkable chemistry created from the very first note!

Hailed by many in the radio industry as the next band from the Chicago market that will go national, Bellevue Suite has made a name for themselves from Los Angeles to New York City through their awe inspiring live performances and their huge cross over brand of Rock. Rarely does a band capture so much passion and energy on stage, while delivering hook after hook in songs composed from the desire to create pure Rock music. The songs speak for themselves, but now with the addition of Hannah Ford’s blazing stage presence, vocals and undeniable skills as a drummer/musician, Bellevue Suite is definitely a MUST SEE in the LIVE performance category.

The lineup consists of front man Michael Sean, guitarist Jeremy Jayson, Hannah Ford on drums, and Dann Walters on bass guitar. Their music combines the hard rock edge of the late ’90s grunge scene, the powerful riff rock components of classic metal along with the soaring vocals and melodic harmonies from the ’80s to create a solid and accessible sound delivered with a 2010 attitude.

Hannah, Michael, Jeremy & Dann have agreed to an opening “feature” show that will be nothing less than spectacular! The venue for this Bellevue Suite /Hannah Ford Mega Event is COMING SOON! July 17th 2010 will mark the date.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS… this is an event you won’t want to miss.

-Witchery Complete Their Long Awaited New Album, Post New Track Online; Announce Slew Of “Special Guests Musicians” On YouTube

Witchery’s lineup reads like the who’s who of Swedish Metal: Jensen (guitars) plays with The Haunted; solo guitarist Rickard Rimfält for Séance; bass player Sharlee D’Angelo is in charge of the deep end of Arch Enemy and Spiritual Beggars; while drummer Martin Axe hits the skins of Opeth and Bloodbath. The upcoming album WITCHKRIEG, set for a June 29th North American release, features the debut of new vocalist Legion (ex-Marduk, ex-Devian) and an army of the best metal guitarists. The fretboard wizardry of Kerry King crowns “Witchkrieg,” the opener and title track.

Guitar player Jensen had met Kerry in 1999 on the first U.S. tour of his band in Los Angeles after the Witchery show at The Whiskey. “He came on our bus and we partied all night long. We played air guitar while listening to old Rainbow records,” Jensen remembers. “At the Roskilde Festival in Denmark I bumped into him again. I played him the song, he listened to it three times straight and said: ‘Yeah, I’ll do it.'”

Hank Sherman (Mercyful Fate, Force Of Evil) was already guesting on three former discs by Witchery. “He is a good friend and will play with us on the next and the next one after that,” reckons a smiling Jensen. Also on board is Andy La Rocque (King Diamond): “It’s always cool to put down a solo on a good song and something that is good sounding, I think I was in the right mood at the time also, which made it sounding melodic and crying.”

The new track “The Reaver” can be heard now at http://www.myspace.com/witcherytheband and features Gary Holt and Lee Altus of Exodus. Gary Holt: “While in Europe touring for The Atrocity Exhibition our good friends in Witchery (as well as a couple of other bands you may have heard of!) kidnapped Lee and I for a little guitar solo madness, which we were more than happy to provide! We had a blast, shredded some solos, went to our gig and proceeded to get wrecked, which included a bit of artistic sharpie work on the engineer! Good times!”

Last but not least Jim Durkin of Dark Angel fame also contributed a guest solo. “Jensen and the Witchery guys have been dear friends of mine for many years… Plus I truly love the band’s music! So when they asked me for a solo I jumped at the chance to blaze one out for them! I’m honoured to be included on this list of such great players that were invited to play on the album!” said Jim Durkin who’s responsible for immortal Dark Angel 1986 classic DARKNESS DESCENDS that is still hailed as one of the fastest Thrash albums.

-Shaman’s Harvest: The Show Must Go On!

Self-Release Rockers Shaman’s Harvest Open For AC/DC As Singer Nathan “Drake” Hunt Performs In A Wheelchair With A Torn Ankle And Lead Guitarist Ryan Tomlinson Plays Injured With A Broken Knee Cap

Missouri rockers Shaman’s Harvest opened for iconic rock band AC/DC last month in Kansas City, despite band members suffering some injuries. Afterall, “the show must go on!”

Singer Nathan “Drake” Hunt performed in a wheelchair for most of the show in Kansas City after going through intensive surgery on his ankle for an injury while back when he was “…working for the man,” lyrics from the band’s current hit single “Dragonfly.” Being on the road his ankle has suffered more damage due to their rigorous performance schedules. Drake will be out of his full leg cast at the end of the month and into a boot cast, allowing him to stand for upcoming shows.

But Drake isn’t the only wounded soldier out on the tour battle field. Lead guitarist Ryan Tomlinson also performed that same set sitting on stool after shattering his femur in February at the Music Millennium Conference in Harrisburg, PA.

Shaman’s Harvest will continue to SHINE, title of their latest album, with the band’s single “Dragonfly” flooding the commercial rock radio airwaves and performances, injured or not, at major festivals including Edgefest VI in Little Rock on May 8; Rock Fest in Kansas City on May 15; Rock On The Range in Columbus, OH on May 23; Rocklahoma in Pryor, Okla. on May 29; Point Fest in St. Louis on June 6 and Summer Fest in Milwaukee, Wis. on June 28.

Shaman’s Harvest will also open up for major rock band Puddle Of Mudd in a few selected cities including Hooligans in Jacksonville, N.C. on May 11, the Watertown Fairgrounds on May 19 in Watertown, NY; the Town Ballroom in Buffalo, N.Y. on May 21; the Capitol Theater in Davenport, Iowa on May 28; The Masquerade in Atlanta on June 3; and the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, TV on June 4.

-Kivimetsän Druidi – BETRAYAL, JUSTICE, REVENGE Now Available

Choosing a name that translates as “Druid Of The Stone Forest” in their native tongue, Finnish symphonic folk-metal group Kivimetsän Druidi was founded in 2002 by brothers Joni (guitar/vocals) and Antti Koskinen (synthesizers), who collaborated with numerous henchmen over the ensuing years on a handful of self-released demos and E.P.s, including 2004’s TAIVAL, 2006’s MUSTAN VALTIKAN AIKA, 2007’s THE NEW CHAPTER, and 2008’s TAOTTU. This body of work eventually earned Kivimetsän Druidi a deal with Century Media, and by year’s end, the Koskinens and their present band mates, Leeni-Maria Hovila (vocals), Antti Rinkinen (guitar), Simo Lehtonen (bass), and Atte Marttinen (drums), released their first full album, SHADOWHEART, whose lyrics were reportedly inspired by a fantasy novel written by Joni Koskinen about the “Land of the Crystal Mountain and Stone Forest.”

-D.O.A. Plays Through May Day Riot in Zurich, Switzerland

Over 400 Protesters Arrested

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND — On May 1, 2010 thousands of people marched and protested in cities from Hong Kong to Istanbul to mark international worker’s day, demanding more jobs, better work conditions and higher wages. D.O.A. happened to be performing at one of those rallies in Zurich at Kanzleistrasse 56, a public outdoor space that’s about three blocks by three blocks wide.

“The idea of why the promoters hold this protest there (without a permit) is because they say that it’s still a public place,” said D.O.A. front man Joe Keithley. “It used to be a squat back in the ’70s, but the police forced everyone out. The activists claim that the only thing that matters in Zurich is money, so it was a statement against the city and the way they run things.”

According to AP reports, “police used water cannons in an attempt to disperse dozens of stone-throwing protesters as unions and politicians protested against ‘excessive’ Swiss banking bonuses.”

Keithley claimed that no one in attendance was doing anything out-of-line.

“There were a couple thousand people in the crowd,” said Keithley. “Towards the end of our set we saw the helicopters above us… Police moved in with water cannons mounted on large police trucks that were about half the size of fire truck. They were armed with riot shields, batons, and guns that fired rubber bullets.”

Keithley claimed that there were over 1,000 riot police in total.

“When we finished playing, the police surrounded the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone leave,” said Keithley. “Anyone that tried to get out were tackled and dragged off. If they resisted, the cops would surround them, so I assume a lot of force was used.”

According to Keithley, the police began to move in ten yards at a time with locked arms forming a barrier around the entire site.

“As they starting marching in towards us, our roadie grabbed us and we ran in the building behind us,” said Keithley. “The doors were made to withstand force.”

According to Keithley, over 400 people were arrested. “The police were practicing on people, and in this case it was the punks and protesters,” he said. “They’re practicing to make the public accept this tactic.”

Keithley also claims that police used tear gas outside immediate area.

“I have been in a lot of riots that back in the day in L.A., and that was really violent, but this was easily four times bigger than any riot than I even been in… And the police were way more organized,” concluded Keithley.

D.O.A., are touring in promotion of their 13th studio album TALK – ACTION = 0 to be released on June 8 via Sudden Death Records. On this album, the band goes back to its early roots and takes a few notes from their first two classic albums: SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE and HARDCORE 81. TALK – ACTION = 0 was produced by chief punk Joe Sh*thead Keithley and Chon (Live Free Or Die).

The album opens with the blistering track “That’s Why I Am An Atheist,” followed up by the Eddie Cochran inspired “Rebel Kind.” If you have ever doubted that D.O.A. has always been a barometer of the times we live in, check out the angry anthem “Don’t Bank On A Bank” and the all too timely “I Live In A Car…”

-I finished Ozzy’s autobiography, and then caught an old episode of VH1 Classic’s “That Metal Show” where Rudy Sarzo talked about his book “Off The Rails.” Then I got an email from Borders about a “40% off any book” coupon. I think you know where I’m going with this. 🙂 I finagled my way into multiple coupons and came home from the bookstore with Sarzo’s book, Slash’s autobiography, and “Anvil! The Story Of Anvil,” all in paperback. There are sooooooo many more rocker books I want to get, too… Wow. I love this stuff.

The book (“I Am Ozzy”) is a fun and breezy read — I laughed out loud several times while reading — but it glossed over the Jake E. Lee era and most of the Zakk Wylde era. I’m now looking forward to Sarzo’s book for more detail on the Randy Rhoads era.

All the Ozzy stuff inspired me to take a spin through his pages at Wikipedia, and just for giggles I dusted off his “forgotten” albums SPEAK OF THE DEVIL and THE ULTIMATE SIN. (Sharon may be able to delete them from record stores, but not from my collection!) The former’s version of “Never Say Die” kinda reminded me how fun that old Sabbath song is.

-I found a used copy of the old Saturday morning cartoon show “Groovie Goolies” and picked it up, thinking my wife and kid would like it. Turns out the boxed set’s special features include an interview with… Alice Cooper. Cool.

-Do yourself a favor and read Mark Morton’s interview with Jon Oliva, mentioned above in “News/Rumors.” Fans will get an answer, in no uncertain terms, as to whether there will be another Savatage album.

-Not to make light of their situation, but that Shaman’s Harvest press release kinda made laugh. I mean, really, what WOULD be serious enough to cause them to miss a gig opening for freakin’ AC/DC?!?!

-In my current playlist: Judas Priest – BRITISH STEEL – 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Columbia/Legacy), Helloween – UNARMED (Sony Music/The End Records), Jon Oliva’s Pain – FESTIVAL (AFM Records), Omega Crom – BLOOD, STEEL & FIRE (Reversed Records).

JUDGE JACKSON – DRIVE (B) Curtis Joe Records, 2009
10 tracks, RT: 37:09
[ judgejacksonband@gmail.com ]
DRIVE is the fifth CD from Los Angeles-based Judge Jackson, the band that channels .38 Special and “countrifies” rock. A visit to their MySpace page shows a very sparse touring schedule this year. This is quite a change from past years when the band toured a good chunk of the country opening for bands as diverse as Gov’t Mule, Doobie Brothers, Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, Army Of Anyone, UFO, and Joe Bonamassa. Todd McTavish (vocals), Lee Jackson (guitar), and J.J. Garcia (drums) are back with new member Brian James on bass after Ryan Rogers left the band. DRIVE is an improvement over 2007’s self-titled CD. The first three songs on this release are the best of the lot: “Just Because” and “Pickin’ Me Up” are upbeat and would be great to get a live crowd going, and “Drive” will grow on you. After that, the CD loses some ground moving to mid-tempo with “The River” and “Me Then You.” The jury is still out on “Radio;” after playing this multiple times, there are times I like it and times I don’t. Judge Jackson closes the CD with a duet between McTavish and Julia Henry called “Meant To Be.” Even with the country-rock feel of the other songs this one is most definitely better suited to a country album — it seems out of very out of place with the rest of the work. In a country context, the song might rate higher, but for a CD that is supposed to be classified as rock, this song rates about a 3 on a scale of 1-10. While the band asserts themselves as a straight-up rock band, DRIVE certainly does not feel like a rock album. If you are in the mood for some countrified or southern rock, sometimes this band can deliver, because when they are good, they are really good, and the best songs here are worth listening to. If Judge Jackson can get just a bit more consistency with their musical mix, keeping the more rock-oriented songs on one CD and moving their country songs to a separate release, they have the potential to put out a great CD.

Venturia guitarist Charly Sahona takes a break from his main band to release his first solo album NAKED THOUGHTS FROM A SILENT CHAOS, and it’s an interesting synthesis of modern rock, prog and metal that works surprising well. Charly handles all the guitar, vocal and keyboard duties and does an admirable job on tracks such as “Raise The Shadow,” “Away From Our Sins,” “It Will Fly Away” and “All That Can’t Be Said.” There is an almost Gothic atmosphere to the songs with Charly’s haunting voice and keyboard textures adding to the originality quotient, and while this isn’t a shred album there are some cracking good solos to be found here. Venturia band mates Diego Rapacchietti (drums) and Thomas James-Potrel (bass) provide excellent backing but it’s clearly Charly’s show. Overall a very strong debut that should interest those seeking unique modern rock that retains a distinctive metal edge.
