-Magic Circle Music Announces U.S. & Canadian Releases!

Manowar, HolyHell, Jack Starr’s Burning Starr And Joe Stump Release Date!

Magic Circle Music recently inked a distribution deal for the U.S. and Canada with MRI Associated Labels, partners of Sony’s U.S. distribution specialist RED. On June 8th, 2010 Magic Circle Music will christen this partnership with four highly anticipated releases:

THUNDER IN THE SKY – Manowar
HOLYHELL – HolyHell
DEFIANCE – Jack Starr’s Burning Starr
THE ESSENTIAL SHRED GUITAR COLLECTION – Joe Stump

Artist: Manowar
Title: THUNDER IN THE SKY
Label: Magic Circle Music
Release Date: June 8, 2010

Manowar’s influence in the rock music industry is undeniable. Since their inception in 1980 they have established themselves as the irrefutable “kings of metal” and are arguably one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. Their impressive and sometimes audacious career is characterized by stellar musicianship, unparalleled song craftsmanship and sheer determination. They have released thirteen studio albums, two live albums, eight DVDs and countless compilations, all of which have sold in excess of eight million units worldwide. In the last decade alone, WARRIORS OF THE WORLD (2002) reached number two on the German album charts and the top 10 in many countries throughout Europe and Asia and 2007’s GODS OF WAR debuted at number two in Germany and Greece respectively. They have earned numerous gold and platinum awards and completed more than 30 tours headlining venues that averaged between 10,000 and 50,000 sold-out seats. With unrivaled conviction and the courage to unflinchingly cut their own path as their guiding ethos, Manowar have left an indelible imprint on the Heavy Metal genre of music. Manowar is a band that constantly pays homage to its fans by giving them exactly what they want: a massive, powerful soundtrack to their lives, songs that celebrate the audacity of the individual, and the spirit of the community.

Their latest groundbreaking project is The Asgard Saga, a multimedia adventure combining the talents of Manowar and German bestselling fantasy author, Wolfgang Hohlbein. With Thor, the God of Thunder, as its central figure, each song on the E.P. musically interprets a poignant moment of this action driven saga.

The 2-disc THUNDER IN THE SKY E.P. features brand new tracks such as “Let The Gods Decide,” “God Or Man” and a much-requested remake of the classic “The Crown And The Ring.” Disc 2 features the power ballad “Father” in 15 different languages, including German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Portuguese.

This is Manowar at their mightiest: fast, powerful, epic!

Artist: HolyHell
Album: HOLYHELL
Label: Magic Circle Music
Release Date: June 8, 2010

“Dramatic, emotional and epic!” HolyHell’s eponymous, full-length Magic Circle Music debut evokes such a visceral response that Andreas Schöwe in Germany’s Rock It! magazine calls it “dark, mystic, melodic rock with classical appeal of the utmost grace! Dio flirts with Nightwish.” With an endorsement like that, something truly wicked this way comes…

The thirteen song concept album taps into the dichotomy of its namesake, as HolyHell explore, both lyrically and musically, the eternal struggle between darkness and light, life and death, evil and divine. And songs like “Angel Of Darkness,” “Holy Water” and “Prophecy” exude a confidence and coherence that belies their brief existence. Formed in 2005 by singer Maria Breon, HolyHell is a remarkable combination of individual talent and wisely endured ripening. The band has already toured Europe several times playing to enormous festival crowds, cultivating a unique blend of symphonic power metal, neoclassical shred and Evanescence-like Goth that comes to fruition on HolyHell.

Maria Breon’s powerful voice and emotional depth may be the trademarks of the band’s sound, but the classically trained singer (who studied voice at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music) is aided by inimitable industry vets Joe Stump (guitar) and Rhino (drums). Brandishing the nickname “Shred Lord” in guitar cliques around the globe, Stump is a reputable player in his own right and has several solo releases under his belt. Rhino is a former member of Manowar… ’nuff said. Bassist Jay Rigney and keyboardist Francisco Palomo (who has several degrees in music and theater) complete this virtuosic lineup. In 2007 HolyHell released the APOCALYPSE E.P., which landed on German charts after selling over 6,000 copies in a matter of weeks by virtue of the band’s live performances alone. Set for a U.S. street date of June 8th, HOLYHELL was produced by Manowar bassist and Magic Circle mastermind Joey DeMaio and the album bears the crystal-clear, massive sound for which he’s known. Mixing and mastering took place at Galaxy Studios in Belgium, one of Europe’s most renowned studios, with award-winning mixing engineer Ronald Prent and two time Grammy Award winning mastering engineer Darcy Proper. As Horst Vonberg at Lords of Metal e-zine says, “Everything about this album is just right!”

Artist: Jack Starr’s Burning Starr
Album: DEFIANCE
Label: Magic Circle Music
Release Date: June 8, 2010

It is said that there is no substitute for experience and guitarist Jack Starr can certainly attest to that fact. “I am a living connection to the music that is influencing the artists of today,” says Starr. His band Burning Starr debuted in 1986 and released their sophomore effort, NO TURNING BACK, that same year. It’s an album Rockadrome.com calls a “classic,” an “essential blend of Judas Priest and Riot style melodic mid ’80s traditional power metal.” Now, after a 20 year hiatus, Burning Starr is back with Defiance, the band’s first release on Magic Circle Music. For Starr, DEFIANCE is a testament to both his perseverance and his influence.

Starr began his professional career in 1982 with an invitation from guitar baron Mike Varney to appear on the Shrapnel Records compilation U.S. METAL VOLUME 2. Soon thereafter he founded the band Virgin Steele, whose eponymous debut was the inaugural release on Music For Nations, the British label now legendary for launching the careers of such industry heavyweights as Metallica and Ratt. In 1984 Starr released his acclaimed solo CD, OUT OF THE DARKNESS, which features ’80s vocal kingpin Rhett Forrester (ex-Riot) as well as musicians from Rainbow and The Rods. In the mid-to-late ’80s his band Burning Starr became a cult sensation with releases like ROCK THE AMERICAN WAY, which Hit Parader magazine called “an album that rocks with both strength and precision.” The band also became a springboard for musicians who would go on to play with Danger Danger, White Lion, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dirty Looks, Quiet Riot and Widowmaker, among others.

In the ’90s and throughout the early part of the new millennium Starr revisited his blues roots with the formation of Smoke Stack Lightning and the Jack Starr Blues Band. But Starr’s metal odyssey didn’t end there. He recently reformed Burning Starr and the band now includes vocal sensation Todd Michael Hall, bassist Ned Meloni and special guest Rhino (formerly of Manowar, currently with HolyHell) on drums. Striving to help strengthen his connection to the genres he helped define, Starr signed with Manowar’s label, Magic Circle Music, knowing that this association would improve both the quality of his work and the breadth of his influence. Defiance is not only brimming with Starr’s prototypical power metal songwriting and rock guitar heroics, but it also benefits from top notch production, courtesy of Joey DeMaio.

Songs like “Ancient Ones,” “Once And Future King” and “The Day Of The Reaper” embody the power and glory befitting, dare we say, a king of metal.

Throughout his career, Jack Starr has consistently performed and recorded with world-class musicians, cultivated a devoted fan base with his signature style and inspired musicians who have kept his legacy relevant in recent years via the symphonic and power metal movements. DEFIANCE is inarguably a testament to these facts.

Artist: Joe Stump
Title: THE ESSENTIAL SHRED GUITAR COLLECTION
Label: Magic Circle Music
Release Date: June 8, 2010

“Joe Stump is a fire breathing guitar monster and his NIGHT OF THE LIVING SHRED is the best neo-classical guitar record since Yngwie’s groundbreaking 1984 debut RISING FORCE” says Guitar One magazine.

Metal guitar virtuoso Joe Stump is the Shred Lord extraordinaire. His performances are bombastic displays of intensity and Guitar One named him one of the ten fastest shredders of all time and Guitarist magazine voted him one of the top 20 shredders in the history of metal. He has toured the world extensively as both a solo artist and with Joe Stump’s Reign Of Terror. He is a member of the power metal band HolyHell who recently released their self-titled debut album. Stump is furthering his legacy by educating guitarists at the world renowned Berklee College of Music as an associate professor and shred guitar guru. The list of his former students includes members of Anthrax, Firewind, Diecast, Killswitch Engage and countless others.

On THE ESSENTIAL SHRED GUITAR COLLECTION, Joe reimagines some of his all time favorite recordings, along with a few new tracks. “Attack Of The Killer Swans” is a neo-classical speed metal tour de force reworking of the “Enchanted Lake” theme from Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake. “The Devil’s Fiddler,” pays homage to another of Joe’s classical heroes: Romantic-era violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini.

From the fierce Euro-metal riffs of “In For The Kill” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” to neo-classical masterpieces like Paganini’s “Revenge And Demon’s Eye,” today’s studio technology breathes new life into these classic tracks. Even the emotionally gut wrenching guitar work contained in “Je t’aime” and “The Dark Gift” capture the killer riffs and strong melodies that epitomize Joe’s masterful technique and profound command of the instrument.

This record mandatory listening for all fans of European influenced shred, old school hard rock and guitar driven metal. Discover what most music experts already proclaim: Joe is the ultimate guitar monster.

-Enuff Z’Nuff To Play Download Warm-Up Full Electric Show

Enuff Z’Nuff will be appearing at the Masque club [formerly the Barfly], Seal St., Liverpool, England on Thursday June 10th. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the U.K.’s hottest new act in support, Hollywood Tease. This special appearance is a warm-up show for the band’s appearance at the prestigious Download festival and tickets are strictly limited for this up close and personal gig. Tickets are priced at £16 each and are currently only available via 07818 258294 or rockrockprod@btinternet.com . Over the counter sales will be from Probe Records, Liverpool and X Records, Bolton from May 6th onwards if any are remaining.

They say that when the going gets tough the tough get going. It’s an old adage that could be applied to numerous rock bands who refuse to die but for Enuff Z’Nuff it’s become, more or less, a battle code. In fact it’s a maxim that they’ve lived by since day one of their inception.

Formed in 1984 out of the Chicago suburbs EZN, as they are affectionately known to their loyal fan following, have struggled with both success and hard times in equal measure. Signed to Atco Records in the late ’80s the band’s debut album, released in 1989, almost-but-not-quite accelerated the band to stardom with its infectious brand of power-pop — a sound that fused Van Halen with Cheap Trick. Tracks such as “New Thing” and “Fly High Michelle” became instant MTV staples but, by no fault of the band, failed to explode on a commercial level. It was an odd state of affairs, everyone — and we do mean EVERYONE — lauded the band as saviours of a rock scene that had grown too fat and too predictable for its own good. EZN were a breath of fresh air in a stagnant room.

Despite valiant attempts to maintain a level of superior sophistication by delivering a succession of perfectly formed and energetic albums, bolstered by high-octane live performances, the band were inexplicably sidelined in favour of numerous trends and fads. Converts however were always quick to provide a welcome in the hillside with each twist and turn of the band’s fortune… or misfortune. It’s no secret that progress was impeded by several sad episodes, including the death of original guitarist Derek Frigo and, later, drummer Ricky Parent.

Core founding members Chip Z’Nuff and Donnie Vie have, make no mistake, been on a rollercoaster of a career but have come out the other side better men as a result. Recent concert dates in Europe at the beginning of 2010 saw the band ignite a new, perhaps more intense, relationship with their audience and attracted new converts keen to investigate what the hullabaloo was all about. Certainly from a performance stand point, the band’s enthusiasm and energy level was, as our American cousins like to say, off-the-hook. The sight of Chip and Donnie blasting out their classic three minute pop-rock anthems was enough to draw a tear from even the most battle hardened cynic in the audience.

Prominent Metal Guitarist Lands Cameo Appearance In Gothic Comic Book Series Issue #3

LONDON, UK — Guitarist Gus G of the popular metal band Firewind and also the newly recruited guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne is featured in the third issue of the gothic comic book series “Eternal Descent,” slated for publication in July, 2010. The issue features a storyline inspired by guitar hero Gus G who helps “Eternal Descent” characters Lyra and Sirian race against time to save Apollo and the rest of the band from the dissonant call of the Damned. The comic book will be available at comic book stores worldwide through Diamond Distribution. Llexi Leon, creator of the multi-media concept Eternal Descent, recruits ESP artists for cameo appearances in the “Eternal Descent” comic which is inspired by a host of iconic metal musicians. The initial launch issue was released on March 31st, 2010 with subsequent issues to be released every 4-6 weeks, spotlighting God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle in issue 2, and Gus G of Firewind and Ozzy Osbourne in issue 3. Other bands including Static X, Atreyu, Children Of Bodom, and Soulfly are slated for upcoming cameo appearances in subsequent issues.

“Llexi Leon really caught my attention when I met him at NAMM, and he described his vision of combining actual rock dudes in his comic book series and doing an issue with each one,” explains guitarist Gus G. “I immediately asked him if we can be in one of his books and that’s how the whole thing started. It’s incredible! I feel Llexi has done a great job in capturing all of the band members’ characters.”

Llexi Leon began making noise in London, England in 2005. His highly intricate guitar style exhibits the many influences corralled to create his intense sound — from classical, flamenco, electronica, and ambient genres to the more prominent genres of rock and metal. All of these genres infused to one, Leon has built a cinematic metal fantasia with his music which has branched out to a comic book series. His main aspirations are bringing stories to life through escapism. He utilizes everyday events and his vivid imagination to drive him to create more avenues for his multimedia enterprise. To prove its tangibility, Llexi Leon, has recruited artists from Marvel, DC Comics, “The Darkness” and “Magdelina” on pencils, inks, coloring:

~ Jason Metcalf on pencils and inks, and a driving force behind detailing the “Eternal Descent” world, who previously worked on “The Darkness” and “Magdelina.”

~ David Rivera will begin inking over Jason’s pencils from issue two and beyond, while Javier Tartaglia and Joel Chua, both veterans of many Marvel and DC comics titles, provide stunning colors.

Leon also began his own production company Incendium Records to release his first concept album LOSING FAITH and the E.P. THE PHANTOM IF THE OPERA. This fulfilled Leon’s dream of having all Eternal Descent media developed with the utmost highest standards under one roof. Leon has also begun recording his third CD release with producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kiss) which is slated for release early in 2011.

Eternal Descent endorses ESP Guitars. Ovation Guitars, Kahler Tremelos, DiMarzio Pickups Ernie Ball Strings, Marshall Amps, Digitech Pedals, Guitar Grip, Pickboy, and Coffin Case.

Wendy is the sixth punk personality to be polyresinated by Aggronautix. In May of 2009, the company launched with a highly popular GG Allin “1991” figure, which was limited to 2,000 numbered units. That figure has since sold out…

All Aggronautix figures are now available for purchase on http://www.aggronautix.com/ or http://www.seeofsound.com/ and will also be available at many independent retailers, comic shops, tattoo parlors, and Walmart (just kidding).

-Andrew W.K. To MC Church Street School’s Community Guitar Jam Led By Mike Diamond Of The Beastie Boys This Saturday, May 1st At 3:00 P.M.!

Make more music! Make more art!!

Church Street School’s
20th Anniversary Block Party
Saturday, May 1st

In conjunction with the Tribeca Family Festival, Church Street School invites kids, parents, and all comers to make music and art with the neighborhood’s renowned musicians and artists — including Mike D. of the Beastie Boys and Andrew W.K.

On May 1, Church Street School hosts a Community Weaving and Guitar Jam to celebrate two decades of art and music education in Tribeca. The day-long celebration will include face-painting, instrument-making, open-art classes, sample music lessons, and frenzy of fun in and around the school located at 74 Warren Street.

Festival-goers will be able to help create a large-scale art installation of woven materials to celebrate the school’s recent expansion AND take part in a massive, all-players-invited, Community Guitar Jam led by Church Street School dad Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys — potentially the world’s largest guitar-jam ever led by a drummer! Andrew W.K., musician, entertainer, and creator/host of “Destroy, Build, Destroy,” will MC the jam. Community Board 1 Chair Julie Menin will officially dedicate the school’s new facilities, made possible by a grant from LMDC and the Department of Cultural Affairs.

On the outdoor stage at the school, afternoon performances by students, faculty and alumni will culminate in the dedication and the Community Guitar Jam. The party continues with the New Orleans sounds of The Sugartones Brass Band.

“Come ready to create, or to bask in the creativity of downtown Manhattan! Bring your own guitar, or just come and sing!” says Church Street School Director Lisa Ecklund-Flores. “We hope everyone who comes to the festival will celebrate our 20th anniversary by adding to our community weaving installation, and grabbing a guitar to play with Mike. You can also take free 15 minute instrumental lessons, or create your own art. As always, we are devoted to offering everyone the chance to unleash their artistic and musical energy here at Church Street School.”

“We are thrilled that Church Street School for Music and Art has always been an important part the Family Festival, and we are totally jazzed to help them celebrate their 20th anniversary,” says Peter Downing, producer of the Family Festival Street Fair, an annual tradition of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Church Street School’s 20th Anniversary May 1 Block Party Activities Include:

11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Open Art
Create Treasure Ships, Watercolor Books, Flags and Handmade Musical Instruments (all ages)

1 – 3 p.m. Performances, Music Workshops, Community Weaving
Our street stage starts hopping with performances by students, faculty and alumni of the school. Sample 15 minute lessons, music and art workshops — see what we’re all about! Participate in our community weaving to celebrate our newly expanded space.

3 – 4 p.m. Community Guitar Jam
Bring your own guitar or any stringed instrument and be a part of history. If you require amplification, bring your own battery operated amp. This largest Guitar Jam ever will be led by Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys, and Andrew W.K. will MC the event. All players are welcome!!!

4 – 5 p.m. Party!
Kick up your heels to the sounds of The Sugartones Brass Band, and celebrate our 20th birthday with us!

In case of rain, festivities will take place inside the school.

-Kings Of Modesty Finish New Video For Standout Track, “Never Touched The Rainbow:

Finland’s finest prog metal export, Kings Of Modesty, are gearing up to take it to the next level toward their quest for global domination, with a striking new video for a standout track from their forthcoming full-length debut (HELL OR HIGH WATER), titled “Never Touched The Rainbow.” Shot in an unmistakably David Lynch-esque style, the story line focuses on a gentleman who turns out to be delusional, and is “hanging between two worlds.” Directed by Carda Helenius, the video was shot in Helsinki (at Hotel Vaakuna and Finland’s top nightclub, Tiger), while the main characters are played by Karri Leino and Päivi Salminen.

Comprised of members Jason Flinck (vocals), Samuel Hjelt (guitar), Mikael Hjelt (keyboards), Henrik Tuura (bass), and Raino Simoinen (drums), Kings Of Modesty will be releasing HELL OR HIGH WATER on May 4th in the U.S., and are aiming to tour behind it. “Hammering melodic metal” (in the vein of Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Kamelot) is a spot-on description of the style that the quintet specialize in, and the song “Never Touched The Rainbow” — and its accompanying video — serve as the perfect taster for this fast-rising group of headbangers.

-D.O.A., Canada’s Punk Legends, To Release 13th Studio Album TALK – ACTION = 0 On June 8

New Single And Video For “I Live In A Car” Out Now

U.S. June Tour Dates Announced

VANCOUVER, BC — D.O.A., Canada’s punk legends, are set to release their 13th studio album TALK – ACTION = 0 on June 8th via Sudden Death Records. On this album, the band goes back to its early roots and takes a few notes from their first two classic albums: SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE and HARDCORE 81. TALK – ACTION = 0 was produced by chief punk Joe Sh*thead Keithley and Chon (Live Free Or Die).

Keithley, Canada’s godfather of punk, has teamed with his cronies Floor Tom Jones (drums) and Dirty Dan Sedan (bass) to come up with one of D.O.A.’s hardest hitting albums to date. On this lucky 13th full length, there’s plenty of what one might expect from the boys: power, politics and humor.

The album opens with the blistering track “That’s Why I Am An Atheist,” followed up by the Eddie Cochran inspired “Rebel Kind.” If you have ever doubted that D.O.A. has always been a barometer of the times we live in, check out the angry anthem “Don’t Bank On A Bank” and the all too timely “I Live In A Car…”

Music Video:

Canada Single on iTunes:

U.S. Single on iTunes:

Further to that point, the track “The R.C.M.P.” explores the misdeeds of Canada’s national police force. To mix things up, the band includes an ode to “Star Trek” with the song “Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty And Bones,” and there are sizzling covers of “The Times They Are A-Changin'” and “That’s Amore.”

D.O.A. burst onto Vancouver’s music scene in 1978 and have been rocking the world, making people think, and sticking it to the man ever since. After they released their first snarling piece of vinyl, the infamous DISCO SUCKS 7″ E.P., it became an underground hit and opened the doors to international prominence, riots, rip off record companies and legions of fans.

In 1981, D.O.A. made the term “hardcore” their own and pushed it into the common vernacular. With the release of the legendary album HARDCORE 81 and subsequent tours by that name, D.O.A. became known as the fathers of hardcore. The band has always worn its politics on its sleeves and done a lot of rabble rousing along the way. D.O.A. has also worked hard at helping out those that really need help over the years. They’ve played benefits for: Rape Relief, anti-racism, anti-globalization, OXFAM, first nation’s rights, anti-censorship, and environmental causes, amongst many others.

D.O.A.’s people power philosophy and sound has been forged by Keithley. His powerful songwriting, singing, guitar playing and stage charisma have always anchored D.O.A. Joe has run for the Green Party three times in Vancouver and his book about D.O.A. entitled “I Sh*thead – A Life In Punk,” went on to become a Canadian best seller.

Other Interesting D.O.A. Facts:

– In 2002, Mayor Larry Campbell declares December 21 to be D.O.A. Day in Vancouver

– In 2009, Keithley was voted one of British Columbia’s all time most influential citizens by Vancouver Sun readers

– Keithley ran for the Green Party three times, the third time he received the second most votes of anybody in the party

– Keithley founded Sudden Death Records in 1978, SDR now has 88 releases

– Keithley was made into a throbblehead early this year by punk rock collectible co. Aggronautix

-Rosetta Announce Album Details; New Song Ready For Consumption

Rosetta have posted a new track to their MySpace page, which has been fully revamped to accommodate the track and artwork from their highly-anticipated new full-length A DETERMINISM OF MORALITY, to be released on Translation Loss May 25th, 2010. Stop by to check out the track “Revolve” from the album here: http://www.myspace.com/rosetta

The expansive seven anthems that form A DETERMINISM OF MORALITY were recorded at Translator Audio by Andrew Schneider (City Of Ships, Pelican, Unsane, Made Out Of Babies), and further progress the material from the band’s acclaimed 2007 sophomore release WAKE/LIFT, also released by Translation Loss. The layout features artwork by Mike Wohlberg of tFk! Illustration (Pelican, The Acacia Strain, A Life Once Lost).

Praised as one of the most powerful and creative bands with a hand in forging the post-rock/post-metal/metalgaze scene over the past seven years, the Philadelphia-based quartet have astounded audiences with each release. Previous releases from Rosetta have been praised by Decibel, Revolver, Terrorizer, Metal Maniacs, Rock Sound, Lambgoat, Blabbermouth and countless more popular publications over the years. Bridging blissful, relaxing interludes with painful, cavernous riff assaults, all with an epic and forward-thinking approach, Rosetta continue to cohesively expand the angles of their finite sound on A DETERMINISM OF MORALITY, taking their already massive approach to new paralyzing, infectious plateaus of metallic bliss.

A DETERMINISM OF MORALITY Track Listing:
1. Ayil
2. Je N’en Connais Pas La Fin
3. Blue Day For Croatoa
4. Release
5. Revolve
6. Renew
7. A Determinism Of Morality

Rosetta recently wrapped up a national tour with label mates City Of Ships and Battlefields, AND will be touring the U.S. heavily in support of the new release. They’ll also be returning to Europe for a second tour in 2010. Upcoming on-the-road activities for the year are in the planning phases and will be announced shortly.

The story tells the tale of King Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, who apparently is an ancestor of Lee’s. Hype: “Christopher Lee has created a truly epic canvas by introducing modern metal symphonies, in a style which resembles a movie score with a very powerful storyline and mesmerizing lyrics. A full orchestra, heavy metal musicians, choir and special guest vocalists bring the legend of Charlemagne to life.” See http://www.christopherleeweb.com/ , http://www.charlemagneproductions.org/ , and http://www.myspace.com/charlemagnemusical for more.

-I saw Queensryche’s “cabaret” show is coming to Chicago this fall. Man, I dunno… I heard and read a little bit about this gimmick when they first announced it an scratched my head. Despite my reservations I mentioned the upcoming gig to a few friends and every single one of them got back to me — quickly — with a “No!” For some reason this inspired me to dig out last year’s AMERICAN SOLDIER and give it another spin. I never reviewed the album because, frankly, I didn’t like it and I didn’t want to publish a bad review of an album whose concept I totally, totally loved. I mean, who wouldn’t get behind something that sheds light on the plight of our troops? So it’s been a little over a year since the album’s release and I thought a little time and space might change my opinion. Sadly, nope. Michael Wilton’s guitar sounds nice in a few places but overall there’s just nothing on the disc that makes me want to listen repeatedly.

-I got the new Category 5 CD in the mail yesterday. Technically. I opened the envelope and out slid six pieces of what used to be the new Category 5 CD. In all my years of reviewing albums, this has happened *maybe* twice. I had to show the carnage to my wife — she’d actually never seen a broken CD before. The funny thing is the envelope was totally unscathed — the corners weren’t even bent!

-I tried to buy the new Ratt the other day at lunch time but my local f.y.e. store — where all CDs are $9.99 — didn’t have any copies. I saw it at Best Buy for $13.99 but just couldn’t bring myself to pay that much. I’ll probably break down and pay, though, especially after reading Keith’s review below.

-What the heck is going on with Bret Michaels? From a brain hemorrhage and a stay in the ICU to talk of possibly resuming touring in a month?! Wow. Here’s hoping he makes a quick and full recovery.

-In my current playlist: Van Canto – TRIBE OF FORCE (Napalm Records), Vendetta – HERETIC NATION (Lion Music), Brainstorm – MEMORIAL ROOTS (AFM Records), Worlds Apart – CLEAN SLATE (Perris Records).

FIRECRACKER – BORN OF FIRE (B-) Escape Music, 2010

Firecracker is guitarist Stefan Lindholm’s pre-Vindictiv project and this collection of recordings from 2004 offers an interesting look at his early development. BORN OF FIRE begins with the excellent “Blind Date,” a very well written melodic hard rocker featuring the Goran Edman styled vocals of Tommy Kerevik (Seventh Wonder), Stefan’s Yngwie inspired axework and an impressive keyboard performance by Pontus Larsson. Frankly, I wish the whole disc measured up to the high standard set by that first song, but I found many of the subsequent tracks to meander somewhat, with plenty of high octane musicianship by Stefan and Pontus but vocal melodies that are just kind of… weird! Tommy Karevik is an excellent singer but I think he fits much better in Seventh Wonder, just as I feel Stefan has really actualized his potential with Vindictiv. So basically here you have some excellent parts on pieces such as “Gamekeeper’s Song,” “Back Broken,” and “A Place Called Behind,” Tommy’s impassioned vocal performance along with Stefan and Pontus’ spirited duets raising the proceedings to above average territory, the virtuosity especially evident on ripping instrumental “Speed Devil.” BORN OF FIRE is one of those discs that is probably going to take repeated listens to get into and will likely appeal mainly to fans of Vindictiv and Seventh Wonder, but the raw talent on display here might catch the ear of some shred connoisseurs as well. Not fully developed but worth a listen.

PHONOMIK – SOUL CREEPER (B/B-) Nightmare Records, 2010

Danish outfit Phonomik have just released their debut album SOUL CREEPER and it’s a mixed bag of goodies incorporating traditional and modern hard rock, metal and progressive elements. Opener “Massacre” immediately establishes Phonomik as a band of today, with heavy rhythms, eerie keyboards and urgent vocals all present and accounted for. “Mental Fire” also reflects Phonomik’s embrace of the current scene, and while I understand this is a good move commercially, I’m not sure it best serves their music. You get a better sense of the potential these guys possess on “Infected,” a cool piece balancing melody and crunch, although once again the vocals stray into nu-metal territory and detract from the overall effect. Things really come together on the storming title track and my favorites, bonus cuts “Broken Son” and “Die Alone,” these really demonstrating what the band are capable of. Phonomik stay away from the flashy guitar solos and keyboard passages but it actually works here, as that type of thing would probably not blend with this style effectively. I’m probably just getting old, but I’d like to hear less of the modern conventions and more of the quality riffing and songwriting Phonomik are clearly skilled at; I’ll be listening out for what happens next…

RATT – INFESTATION (B+) Loud & Proud/Roadrunner, 2010

Wow! Ratt’s INFESTATION ranks as one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in a VERY long time. When this project was first announced last year, I will confess that my interest in Ratt was near zero, and had been for a number of years. I had been a fan of the L.A. rodents in my high school days, but by the time ’88’s disappointing REACH FOR THE SKY album came around it had become pretty obvious that the band was merely phoning it in, and my tastes had moved towards heavier fare by that time anyway. Over the next decade or so I watched from a distance while Ratt went through their inevitable breakup and eventual reunion, suffered the tragic death of founding member Robbin Crosby (R.I.P.), and had a falling out with Stephen Pearcy that led to his being replaced by journeyman vocalist Jizzy Pearl (Love/Hate, L.A. Guns) for a good number of years. However, time (not to mention lack of record company interest) heals all wounds, and eventually Ratt patched up their differences with Pearcy and announced that they were starting work on their first studio album since 1999’s self-titled disc for their new label, Roadrunner Records (!). When the first previews of INFESTATION hit the Net a few weeks ago the fan reaction was absolutely ecstatic and even though it sounded too good to be true, I gave a couple of the new tracks a curious listen on the band’s web site and suddenly heard myself saying “DAMN. This is GOOD.” Needless to say, I ended up buying a copy (my first new Ratt release in over 20 years!) as soon as it became available and it’s pretty much been ruling my CD player since then. INFESTATION is a rock solid collection of classic-style Ratt rockers, kicking off with the positively slammin’ “Eat Me Up Alive” (best song on the CD, bar none — this should’ve been the first single, not the middling “Best Of Me”) and cruises through ten more tracks that sound fresher and rock harder than anything Ratt has released since INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY way the hell back in ’85. New guitarist Carlos Cavazo (ex-Quiet Riot, of course) fills the late Robbin Crosby’s shoes admirably, meshing nicely with longtime Ratt axeman Warren DeMartini to create the band’s trademark wall-o-shred sound. Pearcy’s voice, which I’m told has been something of a hit-or-miss proposition on their last couple of tours, has aged better than I expected. He sounds a little less whiny than the old days (which is a good thing) and has added a bit more of a gritty snarl, but he’s lost none of his swagger. In short, these Ratts are in great musical shape. “A Little Too Much,” “Last Call,” “Look Out Below” (a killer slab of vintage sleaze rock that should get strippers across America gyrating up and down poles to it in no time) and the killer “Lost Weekend” (which rides atop a rumbling riff straight out of OUT OF THE CELLAR’s “Lack Of Communication”) are all standout tracks, bringing back fond memories of the band’s early records when they’d first perfected their blend of DLR-era Van Halen crunch and Aerosmith’s sleaze-soaked boogie. The album doesn’t stumble till the next to last track, the ballad “Take Me Home” — Ratt has never been much of a “ballad band” and this song shows why. Fortunately “Don’t Let Go” follows that misfire and finishes off the album on a high note. All in all, INFESTATION is a surprisingly awesome return to form from a band I’d written off two decades ago and it shows that Ratt still has the fire in their bellies and plenty of fuel left in their tank. Get this one and crank it, immediately if not sooner.

RAVEN – WALK THROUGH FIRE (B+) Metal Blade Records, 2010

Raven and I go back — WAY back. I’ve been a complete and utter fanboy for this legendary NWOBHM trio ever since their early ’80s heyday and even when they all but disappeared from the U.S. metal consciousness for much of the ’90s, I still faithfully bought each new CD. In fact, 1999’s RAW TRACKS compilation was the first album that I ever reviewed for Detritus. (Jeez, was it really that long ago?) In other words, Raven is MY band, dammit, and I’ve been waiting for the Stateside release of this disc for a long time now. It’s been ten years since Raven’s last studio album (2000’s ONE FOR ALL) and since then the band has been through the wringer (as usual). Guitarist Mark Gallagher severely injured his legs in a home-renovation mishap, which required a lengthy rehab and recovery period that essentially put the band on hiatus for the first half of the decade. The band also lost several close family members during this period. Thankfully Mark fully recovered and now Raven is ready to stalk the metal world again!! WALK THROUGH FIRE is a very apropos title for this comeback disc. Raven has never let anything keep them down for long or get in the way of their mission — which is, of course, to continue cranking out some of the loudest, most gloriously obnoxious, purest heavy metal ever unleashed upon God’s green Earth. WALK THROUGH FIRE was released over a year ago on Japan’s King Records label and though it was absolute torture waiting for it, the long overdue U.S. release is well worth investigating. As soon as John Gallagher’s first high pitched squeal cuts through the wall of guitar insanity and drum abuse on the opening salvo “Against The Grain,” it’s like they never went away. Mark’s riff mastery hasn’t lost a step and John’s pounding bass and trademark yelps and yowls are also in fine shape throughout WALK THROUGH FIRE, with the best examples being the crunchy-as-hell “Breaking You Down,” the catchy “Trainwreck,” and the punishing “Long Day’s Journey.” The killer cover of Montrose’s “Space Station #5” and the smokin’ “Hard Road” and “Bulldozer” sweeten the deal even further. The two bonus tracks (live versions of the classics “Live At The Inferno” and “Rock Until You Drop”) are a nice touch too (even though I wish they would’ve included the extra studio cut from the Japanese edition, “Necessary Evil” instead — but what the hell, you can’t have everything!) — it’s about time the U.S. version gets some exclusive stuff for a change!! In case I haven’t made it quite clear already, WALK THROUGH FIRE is yet another quality slab of steel from these longtime NWOBHM survivors — do yourself a favor, buy two copies. You’re going to need the extra when you wear out the first one. It’s great to have Raven back, alive and kickin’. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another ten years for their next one.
