*** PRESS RELEASE #1 ***
-Frontiers Records Announces The Release Of Y&T’s First Studio Album In 13 Years

NAPOLI, ITALY — Y&T, featuring original members Dave Meniketti (vocals and lead guitars) and Phil Kennemore (bass), along with longtime members John Nymann (guitar) and Mike Vanderhule (drums) have recorded their first studio album in 13 years, aptly titled FACEMELTER to be released in Europe on May 21st on Frontiers Records.

With a discography of 18 albums and three greatest hits collections, Y&T has sold over four million albums since their 1974 inception. The band has toured with numerous Rock icons including Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and Mötley Crüe, receiving constant and extensive airplay with hits such as “Forever,” “Rescue Me,” “Mean Streak,” and “Summertime Girls.” Y&T songs have been featured in a multitude of movies and television shows, including “Real Genius,” “Out Of Bounds,” “Baywatch,” and “Hunter.” After five U.S. top 100 albums, songs that tipped into the 40s, two Bammie Awards, and many international television appearances, Y&T’s hits are still played nowadays on classic rock radio stations everywhere. Y&T’s high-energy music still captivates legions of fans around the globe, proving Y&T’s music timeless.

As the title indicates, FACEMELTER — the anticipated new recording — is a hard rockin’, song-oriented album that lives up to its name: it captures the band’s raw energy and tightness that they’ve become known for. Featuring heavy grooves, powerful guitars, and strong melodies, the band shows their versatility, delivering a range of high-energy rockers, mid-tempo head-bangers, modern rock grooves, majestic ballads, and signature Y&T rock anthems. To mark the return, the band engaged John Taylor Dismukes — the same artist who designed covers for Y&T’s classic albums MEAN STREAK, BLACK TIGER and IN ROCK WE TRUST — to create the amazing art of the new FACEMELTER.

“What a great feeling to dive back into making new Y&T music,” states Dave Meniketti. “After being away from it for this long, the anticipation of writing a new CD worth of material was, at first, a bit scary, but as soon as we started up I was happy to find how natural it was to get right back in it again. I think we’re going to have to keep this up, because musically and emotionally, we still have a lot to say!”

“It’s ridiculous that we waited so long to make a new record,” states Phil Kennemore. “In creating new music for FACEMELTER, I rediscovered the most important thing for any artist, and that is to continue creating . . . it feeds my soul. My hope for FACEMELTER is that people might just find a few new favorite Y&T songs.”

“We recorded together to capture as much of a live feel as possible which I feel is the strong point of the band,” adds Mike Vanderhule, while according to John Nymann, “The chemistry we have between us makes it so easy to develop ideas. Now that we are ignited with new material, I can’t wait to bring it to the stage.”

Face-melting is a term that has been with Y&T since the mid-’70s, when a rabid fan ran backstage and told the band, “you melted my face,” which inspired the group’s first publishing company: “Facemelting Music.”

If you haven’t yet taken Y&T’s new album for a ride, grab your leathers, strap yourself in, and prepare to have your face melted.

FACEMELTER includes the following tracks: Prelude, On With The Show; One Life; Shine On; Wild Child; I Want Your Money; I’m Coming Home, If You Want Me; Hot Shot; How Long; Gonna Go Blind; Don’t Bring Me Down; Blind Patriot; Losing My Mind*
* Bonus track included on the first pressing in digi-pak.

-Launch Of New Label, Love & War Records, To Focus On Both Up-And-Coming And Established Metal Talent

It’s not very often that three long-time friends get a chance to launch a record label together, but that’s exactly what Phil Sadler, Charlie Bagarozza, and Steve Blaze have done, with the creation of Love & War Records. And with such a strong link to metal veteran act Lillian Axe (Blaze is the lead guitarist/founding member of the band, while Sadler promoted the group’s shows in the Midwest area), it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the label’s first-ever release will be the group’s tenth album overall, DEEP RED SHADOWS. The album — produced by Blaze and mastered by Ty Tabor of King’s X — promises to be another kick ass entry into the group’s catalog, and will be released on July 20, 2010.

Love & War Records will accept solicited and unsolicited materials from artists. Submissions should contain at least a three-song demo CD, optional DVD of the band performing live, current band photo, current band bio and any info on live shows you have played. All submissions will become the property of Love & War Records.

The official titles for the three label founders will be “Owner and CEO” for Sadler, “President/Head of A&R/Talent Relations” for Bagarozza, and “Producer/A&R” for Blaze. “After having six label deals, including major and indie labels, it was time to become a part of a family that could learn from the errors and strengths of our past situations,” says Blaze. “We want to surround ourselves with a great team to guide our artists and great artists who care about the wonderful art of hard rock and metal music.”

The Sweet: LIVE IN AMERICA CD and their much sought after Sweet merchandise are being sold via their Web site: http://www.thesweetband.com/ .

Two examples of request Sweet reviews include:

“Ballroom Blitz At The Canyon Club: The lineup’s mostly new, but the ’70s British glam rockers Sweet were back raising hell again…on their ‘Are You Ready Steve?’ tour that bassist Steve Priest kicked off last year. The reconstituted Sweet, featuring guitarist Stuart Smith, keyboardist Stevie Stewart, drummer Richie Onori and powerhouse, crowd-pleasing lead singer Joe Retta, kept the crowd roaring with classics (‘Little Willy,’ ‘Love Is Like Oxygen,’ ‘Teenage Rampage’), lesser know hits (‘California Nights’) and a clap along, dance along cover of ‘I Saw Her Standing There.'” – Music Connection, April

“Was it bubble-gum? Glam? Hard rock? A singles band in an album era, Sweet played pop melodies through the ’70s with such joy and malevolence that the English Quartet typically confounded critics in the U.S., where much of their catalog went unreleased. For every glam-tastic American hit like ‘Ballroom Blitz’ there were equally catchy U.K. protopunk smashs like ‘Teenage Rampage’ that suggested the Who covering the Archies via a phalax of violent guitars, vicious drums and castrato-high harmonies… Sweet were the glitter gang Def Leppard always wanted to be.” – Rolling Stone, April 12

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Richie Kotzen will hit the road on his world tour starting in South America April 22nd in Goiania, Brazil, but is working his way back to his long-awaited return to the U.S.A. This will be his first string of tour dates in the U.S.A. in over a decade and a concert not to miss. He will be performing from his 17 plus solo albums with various charting hits he wrote or performed with Poison and Mr. Big.

Kotzen’s latest critically acclaimed release PEACE SIGN on Headroom Inc is sweeping the Nation. Kotzen has an amazing ability to create projects that awe critics and inspire aspiring musicians having done it again with his new release. “I’m really excited about this new CD,” explains Kotzen. “I’m not sure how I did it, but somehow I think it has a really live sound, even though I’m playing all the instruments on all but four songs. I think it is because of the music I grew up on. Bands like Cream, The Stones, and of course Hendrix all had that ‘live — create it on the spot’ sound so I suppose that is the way I hear music.”

Kotzen has been touted as “one of the best guitar players in the world” with a voice on par with some of the greatest rock/soul singers. He has also enjoyed a truly incredible journey in the world of music. Among numerous accomplishments, in 2006 as a solo artist, Kotzen was the opening act for the legendary Rolling Stones’ A BIGGER BANG tour in Japan. And in addition to writing and being featured on #1 charting albums and tracks, Kotzen has amassed an impressive 25 plus album discography.

Come see the hot ticket of the year and one of the greatest guitar players to hit the pages of Guitar Player Magazine, Guitar World and more! U.S.A. tour dates below~

Casanova – CASANOVA (Deluxe Edition)
Street Date: May 11th

Though Casanova may not have become a household name in the ’90s hard rock scene it wasn’t for a lack of great songs and drive to succeed. Their roots began in such classic and esteemed German hard rock/heavy metal bands such as Mad Max and Warlock. Formed in 1990 when Warlock super-producer, Henry Staroste, brought Michael Voss and Michael Eurich together to craft the debut album, CASANOVA, that took the hard rock world by storm. Well, the hard rock world outside of the U.S.A. that is.

Touring Europe in support of the album, which eventually sold 170,000 copies, only helped to establish and strengthen their rapidly increasing fanbase. A devout fanbase that remains by their side, even now, 20 years later. CASANOVA has been out of print for years and was never actually released in the United States until now. With supplies diminishing over the years, the price of obtaining an original copy of CASANOVA has skyrocketed to prices over the $100 mark. So with it being the band’s 20th anniversary we are extremely excited to present a new deluxe edition of the album which includes not only re-mastered audio, but seven (7) bonus tracks. This updated release of CASANOVA is the ultimate edition and more importantly a celebration of the classic hard rock sounds of Casanova!

Street Date: May 11th

DESOLATE KINGS: THE ORACLE ANTHOLOGY is the first ever comprehensive release of North Carolina cult heavy metal band, Oracle. Featuring a then youthful Shawn Pelata on vocals (current member of Line Of Fire) the band existed between the years 1990-1993 and released two demos and a critically acclaimed E.P. entitled, SELAH.

There have been previous issues of SELAH released almost half heartedly, but Divebomb Records decided to finally put together an issue of Oracle material worthy of collector’s expectations. DESOLATE KINGS: THE ORACLE ANTHOLOGY features 17 tracks from Oracle’s entire history plus a brand new interview with Shawn Pelata as well as new introduction by long time fan and columnist, Olaf Becker (Turn Or Burn magazine).

For the collectors we were able to unearth an alternate vocal version of their original demo cassette, plus the super rare two-track demo featuring the band after Shawn’s departure. So this is it, for the fans, a true anthology of a great North Carolina metal band, Oracle.

Street Date: June 15th

We originally released this album in 2003 and at that time shocked many loyal Tribunal Records metalcore followers by serving up a dose of traditional metal similar to the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate yet with a dash of modern Children Of Bodom flair. In 2010 traditional metal is making huge resurgence in the metal community, but Widow since MIDNIGHT STRIKES’ original release have continued carrying the torch having released two more albums (ON FIRE and NIGHTLIFE) via Cruz Del Sur Records.

Having been out of print for years and with the success of our reissue division, Divebomb Records, we have decided to give Widow’s debut album a proper release within an arena we think it will be given the respect it finally deserves. The new MIDNIGHT STRIKES…TWICE! (Deluxe Edition) reissue features the re-mastered original album, NO STONE UNTURNED demo plus new band interview and enhanced footage of full six-song live set from the MIDNIGHT STRIKES era.

Coming Soon

We are currently putting our August releases together. Besides the Line Of Fire reissue (released in unison with new album MOMENTUM coming on Tribunal Records) we have the second installment to the Casanova catalog, naturally treated to a “Deluxe Edition” with bonus tracks and much more.

We have also partnered up with one of the biggest metal labels in the world to bring back a classic from the NYHC/crossover scene. It’s one of our personal favorites and we hope to make it yours as well! Stay tuned for more details as we are able to unveil them.

Solitude Reunion

I personally wanted to thank all the Solitude fans who came out to the reunion show. I had a blast and judging from the crowd reaction, and the even more impressive fact that the show SOLD OUT, the other fans in attendance did too! They band may do another gig down the line, but if they don’t this show was one for the ages as the rocked through 18 songs (most original some “inspirational” covers). We hope to continue gathering images and video and will pass along to everyone we can!

For now I have uploaded what pictures I was able to take via my iPhone. Not the best, but it is all I have for now.

House Of Shakira Announce Andreas Novak As New Vocalist

As highly acclaimed Swedish melodic rockers House Of Shakira head towards the start of their third decade in the business; April 2010 marks both the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for the band with the addition of new lead vocalist Andreas Novak (Novak/Mind’s Eye) joining the band.

The arrival of Andreas Novak marks the amicable departure of vocalist Andreas Eklund. On the reasons behind the change in personnel bassist Per Schelander comments, “It’s hard for us to believe that it was 13 years ago in 1997 that Andreas Eklund walked into our rehearsal studio and blew us away with power and high notes. Back in ’97 we were dead sure that we would never find a singer that was able to take on those melodies that Mikael Eriksson left us with (and continued to write) but Andreas proved us wrong.

“However, when we started to work on the songs for what will be our sixth album we all felt that these new songs called for another voice and expression. We also felt strongly that we needed to work with a singer that wrote his own lyrics. It was one of the hardest decisions we have had to make to ask Andreas Eklund to leave the band but there was no way around it but to part ways. We look back on the last 13 years and the ups and downs during these years proudly, as well as integral in shaping the band as it is today. But, life often calls for tough decisions and as all our fans know, HoS are no quitters!

“So we are incredibly proud when we announce that our new vocalist is Andreas Novak.

“We first heard Andreas’s wonderful vocals on the magnificent Mind’s Eye album A GENTLEMAN’S HURRICANE and it’s a voice that we all feel is perfect for the material we are writing at present. Andreas shares the same love for music with melodies as we do and our expectations on our collaboration are extremely high and we hope to enter the studio to begin recording in May.”

The new House Of Shakira lineup will make its live debut on April 24th 2010 at The Cave in Stockholm and the band invite all to join them in welcoming Andreas Novak to the fold and with seeing in the next chapter in the bands history with a bang!

RELEASED: May 21, 2010

Section A return after an absence of four years with their third album SACRIFICE. Led by the rich vocals of Andy Engberg and the virtuoso guitar work of Torben Enevoldsen (Acacia Avenue, Fatal Force) the band is completed by new drummer Thomas Heintzelmann (Decoy) for the pounding 10 tracks of the new album.

SACRIFICE marks a heavier and more direct approach from Section A with a more streamlined song orientated approach than its two predecessors THE SEVENTH SIGN (2003) and PARALLEL LIVES (2006). The progressive elements of its predecessors are used more sparingly this time round and lyrically there is no concept to follow yet the album does tread the a similar ground in lyric subject matter.

On the music’s direction Torben Enevoldsen comments, “Musically, this album is a bit heavier and straighter forward than our previous efforts. The songs are perhaps also a bit faster and more energetic. It’s however basically still a blend of very melodic hard rock and metal, with a slight touch of Prog. The initial writing actually began right after the release of PARALLEL LIVES, back in 2006. The writing and recording sessions then went on and off during 2007 and 2008, until the album was finally completed in September of 2009. I did most of the recordings here in my own studio in Copenhagen, but Andy’s vocals were recorded at Stonetower Studios in Stockholm”.

On the band’s new drummer Torben proudly states, “I think that our new drummer, Thomas Heintzelmann, has opened new doors to the band technically. His double bass drumming is very fast and tight, and that enabled us to utilize this in our new songs. As a result, a song like ‘Land Of The Desert Sun’ became just the way I wanted it. Very tight, fast and heavy.”

Continuing the band’s tradition of having a first rate keyboardist come in an play solos SACRIFICE is no exception with Lasse Finbråten of Circus Maximus adding his distinctive style and creating a nice collection of solo trade offs with Enevoldsen.

SACRIFICE sees Section A back in full metal mode for their new album and is sure to appeal to long-term fans of the band as well as win over a new audience.

RELEASED: May 21, 2010

Pangea are a melodic hard rock band that should be a household name, as it stands the band are highly respected on the underground scene thanks to two albums released in the mid 1990s. RETROSPECTACULAR marks the release of the band’s long-thought-lost third album with quite a story behind it.

Pangea have existed as a band in its trio formation of Torben Lysolm (Vocal and Guitar), Jan Engstrøm (Bass) and Tony Olsen (Drums and Percussion) since 1991. In 1992 the band entered a production deal with a producer and studio owner and their debut album THE FIRST was released in Japan and Southeast Asia in ’95. Once the and was ready to release their second album MANCHILD in the spring of ’97 a couple of European labels found interest and both albums were released in Europe late in ’97. Having high hopes for their third album the band took a big risk and made an expensive album only to discover that the economic market in Japan collapsed resulting in no label willing to pay anywhere near the asking license price.

This however turned into a crisis for the band on a larger scale with the studio where the album was being recorded suddenly closed down. Only drums, percussion and vocals were saved from revivable backups, the rest was gone. The band went through several phases of “what do we do now?” which ultimately resulted in Torben Lysolm leaving the band in 2004 going on to produce and mix for acts such as Acacia Avenue, Section A, etc. Jan and Tony auditioned several musicians to replace Torben but no replacement was found and the band finally called it quits in 2008. However, the trio regrouped a little while later and decided to finally finish their third album and see where it takes them.

Torben Lysolm comments, “We decided to redo the whole thing and oddly it was not too difficult. We had worked so much on the previous production of it that it was all still in our backbones even all these years later. We’ve changed stuff here and there which appeared to need it after reviewing the album ourselves for several years. Lyrically I teamed up with Martie Kolbl. I heard some stuff she had written and I really liked her style of writing. Odd twists and stuff I’d never come up with myself. She wrote the lyrics for five songs and I am happy that she’s finally going to see the fruit of her labour after all this time.”

RETROSPECTACULAR is classic Pangea, led by the punchy and expressive guitar work and vocals of Lysolm, the band peddle a similar vein of rock to early Extreme with the guitar skill to match their late ’80s/early ’90s contemporaries. The album will also please fans of the band’s first two releases as the classic Pangea sound is continued here in fine style.

It may have taken over a decade to be finished but RETROSPECTACULAR finally sees release on May 21st 2010 on Lion Music.

Dreyelands are a melodic progressive metal band from Hungary. Their debut album ROOMS OF REVELATION showcases the band’s versatile attitude for music being a tasty mixture of the metallic and the melodic side of progressive and power metal, combined with a touch of ’80s AOR/hard rock music.

The songs are powered by heavy guitar riffs fused with ultra melodic, memorable vocal themes along with clever arrangements. Sonically the album is big, modern and natural with no triggers on the drums and live string arrangements etc. The first half of the album has the lighter songs and as the listener gets nearer to the end they are increasingly heavier and darker.

EYEWITNESS OF LIFE is the debut album from a new act from Finland — enter Grönholm led by guitarist and song writer Mika Grönholm. The music of EYEWITNESS OF LIFE is built with an appreciation for a number of metal genres yet there is a common theme of progressive orientated riffs throughout the album, however EYEWITNESS OF LIFE avoids the monster shredding the genre is renowned for resulting in a more focused compact album for those that like strong songs first and foremost.

Nuances of artists such as Queensrÿche and Rush can be heard here and there, but the song is of main concern for Grönholm who also adds a few shades of other cultural sounds from Indian and Spanish music along with some jazz inspired progressions to add a little spice, yet the overall feel remains firmly in the metal camp and is easily accessible.

Genre – Progressive Metal

Mattsson is a name that has become synonymous with melodic progressive metal fused with symphonic, neo-classical and ethnic touches. This direction is continued and taken to a higher level for TANGO, the fifth album to be released under the Mattsson banner. Led by guitarist / composer Lars Eric Mattsson, TANGO sees the collaboration between Mattsson and vocalist Adrienn Antal who first paired up on 2008’s DREAMCHILD release build upon its predecessors impressive foundations for this overall heavier release.

Genre – Guitar Instrumental

French guitarist Cyril Achard is back in an aggressive power trio format for VIOLENCIA, an album which boasts just one guitar with no overdubs working with a grooving rhythm section. VIOLENCIA signals Achard’s intention to produce driving rock once again some seven years away from the scene. VIOLENCIA marks Achard’s most metal and aggressive of all his electric guitar releases and proves itself to be an accessible instrumental offering with Achard’s best playing to date in a rock setting.

-Pitch Black Records ~ Arryan Path, Lethal Saint & Silent Fall “Three Fabulous New Albums”

Please find below the text info for the excellent new album releases by Arryan Path, Lethal Saint & Silent Fall on Pitch Black Records.

Band: Arryan Path
Genre: Epic Power Metal
Release date: Feb 16th 2010

Pitch Black Records is proud to announce the release of the second album by legendary epic/power metal Cypriot act Arryan Path! Six years after the band’s debut album (ROAD TO MACEDONIA) Arryan Path are now back sounding fresher than ever with a killer new album that’s just pure adrenaline pumping, “in-your-face” metal!

Handling the reins is none other than Nicholas Leptos on vocals (Diphtheria, Prodigal Earth) accompanied by his guitar shredding brother Socrates (also of Diphtheria and Prodigal Earth) along with guest musicians Geroge Kallis (keyboards), Stefan Dittrich (drums) and a special participation by Vagelis Maranis of Sanvoisen handling some of the guitars on the album and of course lending his voice on a song.

Recorded and mixed at Maranis Studios in Germany, TERRA INCOGNITA is now available worldwide through Pitch Black Records. It is also available as a digital download with the CD version featuring an additional bonus track.

A special limited edition of 50 numbered copies will be available in mid March with the CD encased in a beautiful engraved wooden box along with a signed booklet, band stickers and an extra disc with exclusive audio and video content.

Hoping to clear the controversy surrounding the band’s name once and for all, first and foremost Pitch Black Records has a zero tolerance on racism and is very firm on NOT collaborating with anyone lacking respect for different races and ethnicities. “Arryan” (double ‘r’) is simply a type of flower and has NOTHING to do with “Aryan” and its associations with Nazism.

Band: Lethal Saint
Album title: LETHAL SAINT
Genre: Traditional Heavy Metal
Release date: February 9, 2010

Pitch Black Records is pleased to announce the release of the debut album by Cypriots Lethal Saint, a band made up of four spirited youngsters who could easily be mistaken as having just woken up from a wild ’80s party but with no hangover whatsoever, picking up where they left off, full of energy and passion!

Despite the band’s young age, their album has just about every element that distinguished ’80s traditional heavy metal — a raw, grimy sound, galloping riffs and pounding drumming, melodic lines and chant-alongs and of course a voice that reeks of leather and booze!

These boys, even though none of them were around back then, must have had the right… “education” since their debut album makes it clear enough that they are more than proud to fly the flag of traditional heavy metal way up high!

Band: Silent Fall
Album Title: OTHERWISE
Genre: Metal
Release date: February 2, 2010

Cyprus-based Pitch Black Records announces the release of the debut album by French melodic metallers Silent Fall (formerly known as Winterland). Recorded and mixed at Wildpath Studio in France, the album features brilliant melodic metal achieved by unique compositions and performances on vocals (Adrien Eyraud), guitars (Olivier Caron & Pierre Cabannes), bass (Sylvain Rousselle), keyboards (Guillaume Tertis) and drums (Fabio Carnielli).

Titled OTHERWISE the album is available worldwide through Pitch Black Records with the CD version featuring a bonus track as well as an additional download track exclusively available for anyone who purchases the CD. The album is also available as a digital download through major MP3 stores.

Silent Fall was created in May 2005 out of the passion for music of three band members: Guillaume (keyboards), Cyrille (guitar) and Adrien (lead vocals).

2008 saw the departure of Cyrille and Ben, to be replaced very shortly by Sylvain and Pedro. The band now concentrated on creating new music while preparing for their first album. However, different musical tastes came to life within the band which lead to the departure of Paulo and Pedro. Sylvain thus decided to move to bass while two new musicians, Olivier (guitar) and Fabio (drums) settled into the group. Having recorded four songs at Wildpath Studios, the group took a short break to participate at Raismesfest 2008 alongside renowned bands such as Gamma Ray and Korpiklaani.

The decision to change the band’s name to Silent Fall came in early 2009 as it was discovered that another band performed under the same name. Silent Fall’s first full-length album, OTHERWISE was recorded in May 2009 and the search for a label began while a few more live shows had been arranged.

Inspired in particular by bands like Angra, Sonata Arctica, Mercenary, Raintime and Edguy, the music of Silent Fall is a blend of melodic power and symphonic metal, while at the same time creating a unique personality reflected by the musical diversity of the band’s members.

During the over-the-top excesses of the late ’80s, every new rock band grabbing for the brass ring went the hair-metal route, but Charlotte refused to be blind little lambs led to the corporate rock slaughter, instead creating a fresh, invigorating, blues-drenched melodic metal sound that conjured up a restless, roaming, slithering rock ‘n’ roll voodoo. In other words, they said the devil be damned and marched to their own thunderous drums. And when they damned the devil, God or Fate or Lady Luck or whatever you want to call it took them on one hell of a hard rocking ride. Their mission: Play the kind of metal music that unleashes the primal beast in all of us and nails everyone to the wall with its moody aggression.

They unveiled their unique style at Jezebel’s in Orange County, California and quickly garnered barrels of buzz for their Great White, Led Zeppelin, and Guns N’ Roses-influenced sound. Their popularity rose rapidly, taking them through renowned venues like The Whisky-A-Go-Go, The Roxy, and The Troubadour. But they never lost sight of their vision, refusing to follow the popular trends, always staying true to themselves while delivering vibrant, creative, unpredictable hard rock music.

Legacy was a pack of righteously rogue mousse-abuse mavericks who merged the messianic message with loud, raucous, rowdy rock ‘n’ roll. Created in 1987, the band felt a burning deep in their souls to unleash an all-cylinders-cranking metal machine that could not only rock your face off, but share a message of sacred love while doing so. The sizzling salvo of heavy guitars, thunderous rhythms, melodic hooks, and layered vocals went hand in hand with who they were as servants of faith. Citing Columbus, Ohio as their home base and bands like Stryper, Dokken, and Scorpions as their influences, the band invaded all manner of musical venues in their quest to bring their message-oriented metal to the masses.

In the winter of 1989, Legacy became the first white-metal band to ever take the coveted crown in the Battle of the Bands at the renowned Alrosa Villa heavy metal club. Fueled by this success and gaining momentum rapidly, they opened for several Christian rock legends, including REZ, Shout, Sacred Warrior, and Allies. Despite any obstacles thrown in their way, the band never lost faith in their mission to rock for the Rock and answer the call to dance with metal destiny.

-The Yardbirds On Tour This May

The Yardbirds will be playing east coast and Ohio dates this May. A true institution, in the brief period from 1963 to 1968, The Yardbirds made an indelible mark on the music and culture of the time, and then on future generations.

To the casual music fan, The Yardbirds are best known as the band that honed the skills of future “guitar gods” Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page; and for their slew of chart hits, including “For Your Love,” “Heart Full Of Soul,” “Shapes Of Things,” “I’m A Man,” and “Over Under Sideways Down.” However, led by core members and songwriters Jim McCarty (drums), Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar/bass) and the late Keith Relf (vocals/harmonica), the band’s experimental explorations also provided the crucial link between British R&B, Psychedelic Rock, and Heavy Metal, while pioneering the use of innovations like fuzz tone, feedback and distortion. Even their 1968 break-up set the stage for Rock ‘n’ Roll’s future… leading Jimmy Page to form the New Yardbirds, later re-christened Led Zeppelin.

Reuniting decades later, McCarty and Dreja with a new generations of talented players including the raw talents of young lead guitarist Ben King, bassist Dave Smale, and vocalist/harmonica player Andy Mitchell, the group has been steadily touring and making new music.

The Yardbirds’ 2003 CD, BIRDLAND on Steve Vai’s Favored Nations label featured guest appearances from Vai, and friends Brian May, Joe Satriani, and Slash.

In 2007 Favored Nations released the YARDBIRDS: LIVE AT B.B. KING’S, again showing the power of the band, and its legacy of great songs.

This season, The Yardbirds return to the States under the leadership purposeful and insightful Dreja and McCarty and the future music superstars: King, Smale and Mitchell.

Band: La Roxx
Album Title: LA ROXX
Release Date: April 2010
Record Label: Steelheart Memories Records
Cat. Number: SMM0919

Style: ’80s Glam/Street Rock reissue
Country: Italy
Bar-code / EAN-Code: 8 026274 009190

– For the very first time on CD the debut album of Glam/Street Hard Rockers from Italy La Roxx originally out, only on cassette, in 1992.

– The album was originally recorded for a release in U.S.A. and Japan thru a major label, and a promotional tour in the States (prior of the announced release) was set up, with gigs played at famous Troubador, Foundation Forum and F.M. Station in Los Angeles. Unfortunately things went bad, as the label supposed to release the album suddenly dropped the offer, so the band found itself with a great (and expensive!) album in its hands without a label ready to release it!

– The album has a pure Party-Glam-Street Rock flavour, close to the sound of U.S. bands like Poison, Pretty Boy Floyd and early Motley Crue.

– Fantastic artwork with a deluxe full-colour 16-page booklet, including pics, memorabilia and lyrics, plus a fully re-mastered sound from the original DAT master tapes!

Track listing:
1. Intro – Run (Animal)

Band: Snew
Genre: Hard Rock / Sleaze Rock
Release Date: March 30, 2010
Available as a mega deluxe CD and digital download.
Available From: SnewStore.com / Amazon / iTunes / Everywhere

Snew often draws comparisons between AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, with a little Ramones thrown in. An odd mix which only goes to prove the originality of a band whose sound is so easily accessible to the masses.

March 30, 2010 Snew released their second album WE DO WHAT WE WANT with best selling audio guide guru Bobby Owsinski in the producer’s chair and Grammy winner Ed Cherney best known for his work with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton on engineering and mixing duties. Recording took place at the renowned Los Angeles studio Village Recorder. This album takes sonic leaps for the band and contains what many industry insiders are calling hit after hit.

In 2009 Snew teamed up with legendary improvisational guitarist Allan Holdsworth for a new rendition of the Deep Purple classic “Highway Star” that has been coveted by Holdsworth and Purple fans as a surprising gem that gets uncounted and continuous downloads across global legal portals like iTunes and bootleg spots like Bit Torrent.

The band’s debut album SNEW YOU released July 2008 has received critical praise and was named one of the Top Ten Albums of 2008 by SleazeRoxx.com. Snew continues to expand its reach across international borders with an increasing number of broadcast and Internet radio stations too many to count. These days Snew is one of the most talked about bands on the Internet and has an international fan base.

Quotes from the press:

“Some music begs you to listen, some music tells you to crank it up and some music just rams itself down your throat. California’s Snew plays the latter, Good luck finding a bad song on this, in fact you won’t even get a second to catch your breath. Snew screams, rocks and pummels from beginning to end with a determination that only a band this young and fresh could muster up. The group manage to keep things pretty simple, in the way AC/DC does, but their energy makes BLACK ICE sound like a CD by a lounge act.”

“What they deliver is some seriously energetic kick ass hard rockin metal. The vocals of Curtis Don Vito fit the music perfectly and the band of guitarist Andy Lux, bassist Cat Tate and drummer Mark Ohrenberger sound as if they have played together for 20 years. If bands like AC/DC are what turns your crank then Snew should be mandatory listening.”

“If you want to hear hard rock the way it should be played, do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars, go and get it today. Highly Recommended!”

Band: VK Lynne
Genre: Rock/Blues/Christian
Release Date: Out Now

“This lady has a voice that MUST be heard! I could see myself driving a couple of hours away to hear her in concert because it would be worth it.” ~Darren Fox, Cutting Edge Voices

Making that voice heard was all she ever wanted to do. Singer/songwriter VK Lynne hails from Pennsylvania Dutch country, where she learned enough about the blues to sing them before she even owned a guitar. “Folks think that if you’re from that part of the country you’re Amish,” she explains. “I tell them, ‘the Amish are there, but the white trash folks who live around them in trailers and such? Those are my people.'”

After college, she moved to Philadelphia, where she recorded her first 10-song CD, THE KEY OF V. “The title was kind of a joke; the band would ask me ‘what key did you write this in?’ and I’d just shrug — I didn’t know word one of music theory at that point — finally, one session the guitarist muttered ‘the key of V.’ — so it made perfect sense.”

However, staying in Philadelphia didn’t. So she packed up and moved to L.A., where she began singing lead with Hollywood jam-band staple, Monogroove. “I really learned the scene that way — the clubs, promoters… and we were gigging constantly; Rin (the band’s founder) tossed me right into it; I was co-songwriter for the band, singing lead, playing rhythm guitar and harmonica — and to this day I don’t know how to play harmonica!”

Once she found her footing, she began re-focusing on her solo material, and left the band to make her second full-length CD, BLACK HALO. “Sound guys would come up to me after a show and say ‘I can’t believe that voice came out of that little body! You look like a little rock and roll angel up there!’ Then my band said, ‘Well, I guess a rock ‘n’ roll angel would have a black halo.’ Although my music is largely secular, I think you can be a rock star and have faith, even if the world thinks that gives you a black halo. By the time we were ready to do the CD, there was no doubt it had to be called that. It seemed to sum up who I was.”

BLACK HALO took off in the indie music cyber-world, and VK spent the early 2000s hitting the Hollywood club circuit with her backing band, making notable appearances at such places as The Key Club, Genghis Cohen and The House Of Blues on the Sunset Strip (opening for Cross Canadian Ragweed).

“[VK] is not only gorgeous, with an amazing international marketing appeal, but her music is bloody fantastic. VK Lynne is a name to travel and be famous…” ~Eat This Music

Thanks to her enormous MySpace and Internet radio presence, she began to garner pockets of fans virtually everywhere. One of those places was Scandinavia. In 2008, she was contacted by Danish producer James Thomas (Cher/Beth Hart). VK was just preparing to go into the studio for the third time, with a collection of new material she was inordinately excited about, when the opportunity to work with him presented itself. She and Thomas discussed the project, the fresh direction she wanted to take, the fact that she had a growing fan base in Scandinavia, and decided that it was time for her to take a new approach in a new place with a new face. VK gathered up her songs and headed to Denmark, where she and Thomas created the tracks that would become WHISKEY OR WATER. “James listened to my lyrics and listened to my voice, and created a sound based on them — (rather than the narrow, sometimes obvious instrumentation ideas I lobbed at him) — a sound that I hadn’t heard before. The sound of VK Lynne.”

Heavily blues-based, but grounded in rock, WHISKEY OR WATER chronicles the last three years of VK’s life and her spiritual journey throughout that period — her struggles with anorexia, Hollywood, religious hypocrisy and love. There is tragedy here, yet hope. “What I am trying to say with my songs can be summed up in one scripture.” She smiles; “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart — I have overcome the world.”

-Andrew W.K. Wins “Best Band In New York City” & Parties With 3OH!3

NEW YORK, NY — With over a decade in the business, Andrew W.K. has continued to produce a singular and intriguing body of work and his fans have stuck beside the prolific rocker along the way. In a popular vote organized by Metromix New York, those same fans voted Andrew W.K. as the “Best Band In New York City,” beating out impressive competition including MGMT, Animal Collective, Mos Def, LCD Soundsystem, and many more. With a collaboration with 3OH!3 in the near future and a ton of new music in the works, Andrew W.K. continues to prove why he is the king of “partying hard” and working even harder.

After meeting 3OH!3 at group birthday bash/spring break throw down at a house party in Memphis, Andrew and the guys began masterminding the “House Party” re-mix — up and running now at http://www.AndrewWK.com/ . Keeping the party alive, the video debuted Friday, April the 16th, and with a new “House Party” music video in the works featuring Andrew and 3OH!3, the track is set to become another party anthem of this generation.

The rocker also has been busy unveiling his high school years (when he was still called, “Andrew Fetterly”) in the Guardian’s online article titled “It’s Time To Let You Hear The Song Which Earned Me A Juvenile Restraining Order.” The piece became a smash hit with readers and quickly rose to the top of the Guardian’s most read features, becoming the third most popular article on the entire Guardian site!

At 17 years old, Andrew professed his love for his high school crush through a darkly romantic tune. Due to the popular demand, Andrew shared more about the aftermath of his obsession. The follow-up can be heard at http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/apr/15/andrew-wk-my-destiny-girl .

-Prog-Metallists Bushwhack Strike Back With New E.P. Release CANVAS Due May 18, 2010

The last we heard from Bushwhack, it was all about “the instrumental,” as not a single vocal was spotted throughout their 2007 self-titled debut. But on their latest release, the four-song E.P., CANVAS, the lads have indeed opted to broaden their musical horizons and take “the vocal plunge.” The New Haven, CT group — comprised of Frank Sacramone (keyboards), Sean McCusker (bass), Jamie van Dyck (guitars/vocals), and Ben Shanbrom (lead vocals/drums) — have also toughened up their sound considerably, and focused their sound more towards the harder side of things.

“With the E.P. being as short as it is, we just wanted to present four songs that we had written since our debut album that showed our new direction, with the order not mattering as much, as the four songs are all very different,” explains Jamie. “The E.P. feels more song-oriented and less album-oriented, which likely comes from the length of the E.P. as well as the presence of vocals. Each song on the E.P. showcases a unique and specific side of Bushwhack, which is intentional as we only had three original songs and one cover song to show everything we had. I think because of that, the songs are more accessible, and every track on the E.P. is strong, while our debut may have had one or two songs that in retrospect might have been better left off the album.”

And since the release is comprised of a quartet of songs, Bushwhack made sure each song has the power and drive to stand on its own. “I really liked how ‘Morning’ and ‘Clubbed To Death’ turned out,” says Frank. “‘Morning’ has so much harmonic complexity, along with having a thick layer of acoustic and electric guitar tracks. And even through all that, it really gets stuck in my head. ‘Clubbed To Death’ sounds epic, I hope we made Rob D proud.” Another standout is “Flawed,” which also happens to be one of Sean’s favorites. “It is our heaviest song but also has some of the prettiest piano lines mixed in. It is also really fun to play, it just grooves.”

With vocals now doing battle with all the heaviness and complexity, CANVAS undoubtedly will expand Bushwhack’s fanbase even further. But it turns out that although Ben did a fine job handling vocal duties on the release, he would like to return to solely focusing on his drumming duties. “Our most immediate concern is getting a lead vocalist. It is just too much stress for me to handle hitting all the high notes, screaming, and banging out all of my nonsense beats. Jamie and I plan to keep some of our vocal duties in this band, but to perform at our best we would like to focus on our instruments and find a stable lead singer. From there, we’d like to start playing out more consistently, possibly tour, and create the sophomore album of our dreams.”

Suicidal Records is proud to announce the release of Infectious Grooves/Cyco Miko’s FUNK IT UP & PUNK IT UP: LIVE IN FRANCE ’95. Recorded live in Lyon, France in 1995 by soundman Tom Abraham straight from the board with zero sound alterations, this never-before-released double live gem features original Infectious Grooves members Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies), Robert Trujillo (now with Metallica), Dean Pleasants (Suicidal Tendencies), Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) and Dave Nassie (former No Use For A Name; current Bleeding Through). Infectious Grooves was formed soon after Robert Trujillo joined Suicidal Tendencies in 1989. There’s something beautiful about breaking rules that never should have been made.”

-Category 5 Goes OFF THE IVORY COAST

DETROIT, MI — Detroit based melodic rockers Category 5 have just released their debut E.P., OFF THE IVORY COAST through Reel Time Records.

The five-song mini album is bookended by two in-your-face scorching rockers, “Lost In Legacy” and “7 Daze Warning” and filled out by the more mid tempo tracks, “Home Again,” “I Wonder” and “Party If You Want To.” Hitting off with “Lost In Legacy” the track has a driving backbeat and kicks the E.P. off in fine style. The mid tempo “Home Again” is the first song written by the band and showcases Perry Zaremba’s powerful vocals, while “I Wonder” has a haunting melody and is a reflection of bass player George Koch’s memories of his well respected mother. “Party If You Want To” changes things up a bit, featuring a lighthearted groove and a sax piece played by special guest Dave Whitelaw. Finishing off the album is the high powered “7 Daze Warning” and is a tale of the beginnings of Category 5, similar to Boston’s “Rock N’ Roll Band” or Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar.” Within the five songs on offer the band’s varied influences such as melodic metal, prog rock, jazz and even country are very much evident to the listener. Says Zaremba, “Our songs are inspired by many different influences and are motivated by our ever changing experiences in life. We are looking for people who will enjoy the irony of a Category 5 that can’t be categorized. I am having so much fun right now. I love the act of creation.”

Forming in Detroit, MI at the end of 2006, Category 5 came to be when lead guitarist Joe Czentnar put an ad in a local paper looking for a singer. From that ad Czentnar met Perry Zaremba, “After meeting about 50 people and listening to a modified version of really bad ‘American Idol’ auditions. This also entails meeting some people that you would and should never allow in your home!” Hanging on to Zaremba’s number. Continuing his search Joe began playing with other musicians and soon found guitarist / keyboardist Kevin Davis with another band and the band eventually brought bass player George Koch and drummer Kenny Morss.

Czentnar had gained a bit of notoriety in the late ’90s when he played with internationally acclaimed prog rock band Twist Of Fate, earning a Grammy nomination for their Bob Ludwig mastered album. He also shared the stage with artists such as Ted Nugent, John Waite and Mitch Ryder during that time. “With Category 5, I have the luxury of being in a band in which all members write and it’s not as intense a situation as my previous band. We have a lot of fun and that’s really what it should be about, isn’t it? We challenge each other musically and that makes it an exciting experience.”

OFF THE IVORY COAST will be available from your favourite import dealers as well as in select mom and pop stores and big box chains including Best Buy. The E.P. is also currently on iTunes and on Amazon in download format.

-Spanish Symphonic Gothic Metallers Diabulus In Musica Post First New Song Of Their Upcoming Debut Album SECRETS!

Female fronted Spanish symphonic gothic metallers Diabulus In Musica have uploaded the first new song of their much anticipated debut album SECRETS!

Please surf over to the band’s MySpace to check out “Come To Paradise!”

Front lady Zuberora comments the song as follows: “This is one of our favourite songs from the album. Actually, is the second one we’ve written when we started with DIM, so it’s kinda special for us. It’s full of energy and we never get tired of it! This is why we thought that ‘Come To Paradise’ was the most suitable song to open SECRETS and welcome all of you to our special world!”

SECRETS was engineered by the prestigious Spanish tech-producer Iñaki Llarena and mixed by former Epica guitar player Ad Sluijter who was blown away by the stuff DIM sent to him. Last but not least, DIM is supported by the invaluable expertise of Sascha Paeth, Simon Oberender and Michael (Miro) Rodenberg who mastered Secrets in the Gate studios in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Diabulus In Musica managed to record an equilibrated album, including self arranged classical music elements, catchy melodies as well as darker and harsher sounds, so an eclectic but perfectly fused style is what we can find on SECRETS. The metaphorical lyrics of the versatile singer Zuberoa, express personal feelings and worries but we can also find some anthems to nature and freedom or mythological themes.

Merauder’s latest album GO IS I was released last August, their first for Regain Records. Quoted as being the hardcore assassins’ most brutal album to date, the stylized crunch of GOD IS I shows the band at their most inspired and invigorated in years with its runaway freight train grooves, mid-pace stomps, seething gang vocals and death metal drenched riffs all built into the band’s patented metallic hardcore delivery.

“On GOD IS I, the band’s brawny, grooving thrash — inspired by New York’s Hardest (Cro-Mags, Biohazard, etc.) — still has the power to peel skin off heads.” – Revolver

“…with the release of GOD IS I, Merauder brings credibility back to metalcore.” – SLUG Magazine

“This album is super f*cking heavy and a return to the form of the Merauder I’ve always loved… This is the way that metalcore is supposed to sound.” 90/100 – Stereokiller.com

“…what Merauder have accomplished here is nothing less than a near perfect blend of hardcore and metal elements.” 4/5 – MouthForWar.net

“HEY HEY PETER…WHERE YOU GOIN’?” (or: “Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of the Untimely Death of a Musician”)

According to an old saying, there are only two absolutes in life: Death and Taxes. On the morning of April 15th (income tax deadline day here in the U.S.), those absolutes converged as the news of Type O Negative front man Peter Steele’s passing began making its way around the Internet. The news first broke in the wee hours of the morning courtesy of FUSE-TV’s Juliya Chernetsky via Twitter, and the story was confirmed by the band’s label and management a few hours later: Petrus T. Ratajczyk, a.k.a. Peter Steele, had died on April 14th of a suspected heart attack. He was 48 years old. Type O’s sizable fanbase, which had been holding out faint hope that perhaps this was some sort of hoax or a morbid joke (the band had pulled a similar Pete-Is-Dead gag on their Web site back in 2005), began mourning in earnest across the worldwide web, myself included.

I’ll confess that I hadn’t been following Type O for a good portion of the previous decade, but I still couldn’t help feeling exceedingly bummed by the news of Pete’s passing. He’d been a unique character and a respected member of the Metal community for nearly 25 years and I’d been a rabid fan of the hulking, 6-foot-7 inch Brooklynite’s music for over two decades, going all the way back to the debut album by his previous band, Carnivore, in 1986. That band was a pretty standard ’80s speed/thrash outfit for the most part, but Steele’s gift for exceedingly gory, apocalyptic sci-fi lyrics (“World War III And IV,” “Thermonuclear Warrior”) and odes to out-and-out male chauvenism (see “Carnivore” and “Male Supremacy”) made them stand out from the rest of the speed metal pack. Such adolescent crush-kill-destroy bravado quickly endeared them to hordes of teenage metal dorks such as myself, who grooved on the comic book/horror movie imagery. Carnivore’s second (and final) album, RETALIATION (1987) was the first step in Steele’s musical evolution. Gone were the anthems about bikers and songs about cunnilingus; RETALIATION was a brutal, potent mix of thrash metal and Noo Yawk Hardcore that was about a subtle as a boot to the head. Steele’s angst and fury dripped from every track of this snarling beast, and to this day RETALIATION is an album that makes me want to beat the crap out of somebody whenever I hear it. It was a flat-out nasty record (I mean that in a good way, of course) that was perfectly suited for the Cold War times in which it appeared.

…and after that, Carnivore disappeared, seemingly without a trace. Rumors of a third release (with the working title JESUS LOOKS LIKE ME) circulated for a while but the band — and Steele — had mysteriously vanished. We would learn later that Peter, disenfranchised with the “business” side of the music business, had gone back home to Brooklyn and taken a job with the N.Y.C. Parks Department. The desire to create music still burned within him, however, and in 1991 he returned to the scene with his new band, Type O Negative. Their SLOW, DEEP AND HARD debut maintained some ties with the previous Carnivore material, but the new lineup (especially the addition of keyboardist Josh Silver) added a whole new dimension of doom and horror to Steele’s rants about suicide, welfare scammers and cheating ex-girlfriends. I saw Type O Negative for the first time around this period (in the middle of a multi-band bill opening for Prong, of all creatures) and they terrified yet fascinated me at the same time. For an idea of what those early Type O shows were like, check out the “faux-live” disc THE ORIGIN OF THE FECES, which may not be a truly “live” album as it was whipped up in the studio with the band’s friends providing audience noises, but still portrays the mayhem of the experience quite well. Legend has it that Steele signed his Type O record contract with a mixture of his own blood and semen. After witnessing that no-holds-barred, fangs-bared performance, I could easily believe it. To this day, SLOW, DEEP AND HARD remains my favorite Type O Negative album. It was a groundbreaking release which proved that “extreme music” didn’t have to be played at 10,000 RPM to make its point.

BLOODY KISSES followed in ’93, which served as Type O’s breakthrough to the world beyond the New York area. At first, I couldn’t wrap my head around that album. While SLOW, DEEP AND HARD was brutal, doomy and uncompromising, BLOODY KISSES was melodic, haunting, and even soothing at times. Somehow “Black No. 1/Little Miss Scare-All” became a surprise hit single for the band, and they were on their way, so to speak. I saw the band live several more times in clubs around the N.Y./N.J. area in those days and began noticing a change in the crowd they were drawing almost immediately — there were fewer leftover skinheads calling for Carnivore songs like “Race War” and “Jesus Hitler,” and more pale-faced girls who dressed like Winona Ryder’s character in “Beetlejuice.” That was fine by me, to be honest, as the girls smelled better than the skinheads and it was a far more pleasant experience to have them smashing up against me at the front of the stage…

The last time I saw Type O live was in the Summer of ’95 when they were opening for Queensryche’s PROMISED LAND tour. Though they seemed a bit out of their element in a large venue as opposed to the small clubs that had been their home, the music spoke for itself, as did the band’s trademark self-deprecating humor (Steele introduced the band to the audience by saying “Ey, howya doin’, we’re Type O Negative from Brooklyn, New York… those of you who are here to see Queensryche, we’ll be out of your way soon, and we appreciate your patience…” haha.) When the smoke (and 2+ years of road dogging) cleared, BLOODY KISSES had become the largest selling album in the history of Roadrunner Records (a title held until Slipknot’s debut came along at the end of the ’90s), and it had been a hell of a lot of fun watching the band grow from a local favorite into bonafide Rock Stars, despite Steele and company’s reluctance to be tagged as such.

One Playgirl centerfold and a Goth makeover worthy of a paperback romance novel cover model later, Type O’s turning point, OCTOBER RUST, was released in 1996. This was where the band and I parted ways for a good number of years. Type O’s ever-evolving sound had progressed to a point where they were more Bauhaus than Black Sabbath, and I had moved on to other things besides. The band did just fine without my help, it would seem, touring the globe to throngs of adoring, black clad, vampire-caped fans. I gave the WORLD COMING DOWN (1999) and LIFE IS KILLING ME (2003) discs each a few cursory spins as they were released, and though I was impressed with the expansion of the band’s sonic palette each time, it still did little to pull me back into their dark little world. Maybe I just wasn’t depressed enough anymore. Still, I always made sure to read the latest interviews with Steele (the man had a wickedly funny, morbid sense of humor that shone through in every new article) and continued to root for them from afar.

My interest in Type O was renewed with the release of 2007’s DEAD AGAIN (their first for new label SPV, after an acrimonious split with longtime home Roadrunner), which brough the band full circle, hearkening back at times to the SLOW, DEEP AND HARD/BLOODY KISSES era. It was their best record in over a decade in my book, and now sadly it appears that it will be their epitaph as well. A shame, because I really dug (and still dig) that album and was curious to find out where they’d go next.

It’s been a hell of a ride, Peter. We’ll miss your unique vision and your characteristic blackened gallows humor. Wherever you are, I hope you’re basking in the September Sun…with that axe in your hand.

-Woo-hoo! A new Pretty Maids album is coming soon! I just spent some time poking around their site ( http://www.prettymaids.dk/ ), and thoroughly enjoyed vocalist Ronnie Atkins’ blog-type thing called “Ronnie Remembering,” where he reminisces about the various past eras. The entries are arranged chronologically, starting with “PRETTY MAIDS 1982-1983” on up to “JUMP THE GUN / IN SANTA’S CLAWS 1987 – 1990.” There are some awesome stories in here, including shout-outs to bands like Rough Cutt, Icon, and King Kobra — the latter is even given credit for inspiring the Maids’ all-time classic song “Future World.” Other good stories revolve around the band members attending a New York Yankees game in the Bronx, running out of a high-rise they thought was on fire, touring with Saxon and Deep Purple, and working with legendary producer Eddie Kramer. Great, great stuff.

-Those new covers albums by L.A. Guns and George Lynch on Deadline look to be both strange and interesting. It must be kinda weird for the Gunners to be covering a Buckcherry song, since they’re so much older — err, I mean, *mature* — than Buckcherry. And what in THE heck is up with Mr. Scary covering Savatage/TSO stuff? I’m scratchin’ my head over that one, but I’m also dying to hear the songs.

-I’m also extremely happy to hear about the newies from Y&T and Lillian Axe. Kudos to Meniketti & Co. on their return to the world of studio albums, and kudos to Blaze & Co. for slamming out their third album in four years. Keep up the great work!

-Given all the turmoil surrounding Michael Schenker’s career, are we *really* to believe the McAuley-Schenker Group has reunited to play the Rock N America festival in July? If so, that’s awesome.

-In my current playlist: Slash – s/t (Dik Hayd Records, LLC), Giant – PROMISE LAND (Frontiers), BugGiRL – BLOOD, SWEAT & BEERS (Impedance Music/MVD), Stampede Queen – A NIGHT AT THE COCKFIGHTS (REISSUE) (Perris Records).

These youthful Canucks are so metal that their joints probably squeak when they walk. BLOOD, STEEL & FIRE, the self-released debut from Vancouver based Omega Crom, is a whirlwind of old school, high speed thrash riffage, impressive drum abuse, and lyrical tales of warfare and destruction, all wrapped up in a cool cover painting featuring a blood covered, axe wielding Conan the Barbarian type. Not too shabby for a first effort, I suppose. They call their style “Ripping Metal” and describe their sound as “Judas Priest on Steroids” on their MySpace, but does Omega Crom live up to their press hype? Well… almost. Drawing inspirations from both the thrash/death metal and prog realms, Omega Crom can certainly play. The guitar team of Johnny Ketlo (who also handles lead vocals) and Wayne Holden are an impressive pair of shredders and they’re the true stars of this band, laying down walls of twisting, razor-wired riffing on every track, while Dan La Pierre backs them up with some suitably intense drum devastation. Omega Crom can whip up one hell of a thrash storm (as on the stand out track “The Passing Of Azazel”), and then slow things down (see the opening of the epic last track, “Metal-Revolution”) without losing an ounce of intensity, but unfortunately (for me at least) the band falls short in the vocal department. One second Ketlo’s screeching out lyrics in a high pitched falsetto, then suddenly he switches to a death style “BLURRRRRRRGH!” and then shoots right back up again, up, down, up, down, throughout the entire disc. After a while it’s like listening to a sonic yo-yo. These guys should either draft a full time vocalist so Ketlo can stick to guitar (where his strengths truly lie), or he should simply pick one vocal style and stay with it. BLOOD, STEEL & FIRE sounded pretty damn good on the first spin but on subsequent plays the vocal schizophrenia began to grate on me. Still, BLOOD, STEEL & FIRE is not a bad “rookie card” release from a young band who have got the musical goods. If they could narrow their focus a little and quit trying to be all things to all metal people, their next release could be something special.
