Sweden Rock Festival Updates
June 9-10-11-12, Solvesborg

For the first time ever on Sweden Rock Festival: Mayhem

The ultimate pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene released their — and the whole scene’s — first studio recording in 1987: DEATHCRUSH. Mayhem, then centered around founder/guitarist Euronymous, became infamous for a live show with such features as impaled pigs’ heads, as well as singer Dead’s suicide in 1991. The band’s second, even more historical record DE MYSTERIIS DOM SATHANAS arrived posthumously in 1994 — after Euronymous was murdered by the man who played bass on the album, Count Grishnackh of Burzum. However, this was not the end of the arguably most influential deliverers of primitive, definitive musical blackness. Drummer Hallhammer, original bassist Necrobutcher and new guitarist Blasphemer resuscitated Mayhem, and in 2004 DE MYSTERIIS vocalist Attila Csihar returned to the fold as well. Following Mayhem’s fifth studio record ORDO AD CHAO (2007) Blasphemer took his leave. These days, Hellhammer, Necrobutcher and Attila take the stage along with deadly guitar duo Morfeus and Silmaeth, and with this lineup Mayhem will now make their long overdue SRF debut. Rejoice, all true black metal lovers!

Some Classic Doom To Sweden Rock Festival 2010: Cathedral

When doom metal was established as a separate sub-genre in the early ’90s, Cathedral was one of its most influential and successful acts. Singer and founder Lee Dorrian used to be in Napalm Death, and Cathedral’s debut FOREST OF EQUILIBRIUM (1991) was also kind of extreme — a pitch-black, sinister classic. The band’s later works have been more groove-orientated and not equally slow, but still decidedly heavy. After their heralded eighth album THE GARDEN OF UNEARTHLY DELIGHTS (2006), many believed Cathedral called it a day. However, now they’re back with their progressive double album THE GUESSING GAME and are also headed for this year’s SRF.

Classic NWOBHM: Praying Mantis To Sweden Rock

Their classic debut TIME TELLS NO LIES (1981) established Praying Mantis as one of the prime melodic bands within the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Sadly the band split up shortly afterwards due to various problems, including a conflict with Rainbow about who would get to release the single “I Surrender.” Praying Mantis’ Japanese fan base in particular remained devoted, and the band reunited in 1990. The comeback album PREDATOR IN DISGUISE was followed by more, equally excellent releases, most recently the lauded SANCTUARY in 2009. The band’s lineup has changed numerous times (former members include Iron Maiden refugees Paul Di’Anno, Dennis Stratton and Clive Burr), but its nucleus has always been the Troy brothers, Chris and Tino on bass and guitar, respectively. At Praying Mantis’ SRF debut the duo will be accompanied by guitarist Andy Burgess, drummer Benjy Reid and singer Mike Freeland.

-Nightmare Records News

Release: April 16, 2010

Diversity and experience and most of all passion make Phonomik’s music vivid and intense. The style is a culmination of timeless and classic rock. Melodic integrity and hard rocking riffs play in favour for Phonomik’s unique sound. The renaissance meets 2000 with the primal scream of a caveman. Appealing to the human emotions Phonomik’s music scales love and hate. Grinding the edge while borderlining hard rock and metal Phonomik is an experience of profound art and lyrical poetry dating back to the origin of emotion — recognizable and real as every second just past.

Inspired by and honouring the great heroes of rock, Phonomik wishes to contribute to the universal art of music by standing on the shoulders of giants. Soul Creepers take exit point back to when Jesus hung on the cross but this history is about the thieves who hung beside Jesus and cried “if you are the Son of God SO get us down from here.” Then Jesus died sped up to heaven but our dear friend of theives joined the slip stream and was caught in the nothingness. Now he is a Soul Creeper who has to live by others souls, and is sentenced to a total of eternity. Refers to the ancient beast that dwell deep inside the human soul or the wispers that take us to dark places.

4. Wake Up Dead

Release: April 13, 2010

Steve Cichon’s third album hits the streets, although you may not recognize his name yet… known also for his work with Vicious Circle (the original one.) Steve isn’t singing on this one, rather sticking to his God given talent of guitar. Steve has a gift for blending wonderful melody and composition together into a beautiful soundscape as well as showing off his technical skills without overshadowing the music. Steve blends many textures and tones of guitar, metal, hard rock, classical, Spanish acoustic, guitar synth, jazz, new age, along with varying guitar styles meshed together into each song surprisingly smoothly and all with his own sense of musicality basted in a heavy edge that urges the listener to raise his fists evoking the live arena concert experience. Remember the wonderful music from the ’70s heavy rock and progressive movements, Steve manages to capture the essence of this “Real” and “Uncommercial” musical liberation of no boundaries with this collection of ten tracks he offers us on CRANIAL FEEDBACK. This album is truly a musical mind journey to take you through your own great depths. Steve said this about the album’s creation… “I wanted to create a soundscape of the perfect live show, when I began writing the album, I visualized myself on a large world stage outdoors and in my mind the music wrote itself, flowing out of me so freely, I felt I had to include all of the aspects that I heard in this visualization to have the listener really understand and feel of what I experienced during the creation process.” Steve’s songs have received praise from representatives of major recording label, to name a few: John Kalodner (Geffen); Charles Koppleman (EMI); Jimmy Lenner (Virgin); Aziz Goksel (Atlantic); Aaron Jacoves (Taxi) and Gene Simmons (Kiss).

Track Listing:
1. Richochet
2. Crystal Clear
3. Siren
4. Panacea
5. Headrush
6. Great Escape
7. Sedated
8. Northern Lights
9. Kung Pao

-Hammers Of Misfortune Signs To Metal Blade Records!

Metal Blade Records is pleased to announce the signing of San Francisco’s progressive metal outfit Hammers Of Misfortune. Metal Blade Records will release four of the band’s previous releases in late summer 2010 with a new studio album expected in 2011.

“Metal Blade contacted us in April of 2009. After some back and forth we came to an agreement that will allow Hammers Of Misfortune to continue making albums the way we always have: unsupervised and self-produced. Also, we grew up on Metal Blade releases — from Destruction and Slayer to Trouble and Fates Warning — so we feel pretty good about that.” – Guitarist and founding member John Cobbett

“We are really happy and honored to have signed Hammers Of Misfortune. I have been a huge fan for awhile now and I personally am really excited to work with them.” – Brian Slagel

Formed by the eclectic and versatile guitarist John Cobbett (GWAR, Ludicra, Slough Feg, Amber Asylum, Jarboe) in the late ’90s, Hammers Of Misfortune started as an exercise in songwriting and making coherent full-length albums making the group more of an experiment in art than your typical band. Hammers Of Misfortune is made up of some of the most talented musicians John Cobbett and co. can find.

Founding member John Cobbett explains; “I set out to do it this way from the beginning. Having been in a dozen or so bands that broke up before realizing their potential, I decided that the songs and albums were the most important thing. So I formed a ‘break-up proof’ project that depends more on good material and strong albums than a consistent lineup.”

One thing that is consistent, though, is that Hammers Of Misfortune has always consisted of John Cobbett (guitars) and Chewy Marzolo (drums) with Sigrid Sheie (keys, voice, flute) being another a long term member of the group. Bassist Max Barnett (ex Old Grandad) has been with the group for over a year now and Hammers Of Misfortune recently added Leila Abdul-Rauf (ex Saros) on guitar and vocals.

Come late summer 2010, Metal Blade Records will be reissuing the following Hammers Of Misfortune catalog:

Stay tuned to both the band’s and Metal Blade’s Web sites for further details on packaging, pre-orders, and release dates.

-Presenting The HAWKWIND TRIAD — Harvestman, U.S. Christmas & Minsk

To see official release this May via Neurot Recordings, the HAWKWIND TRIAD album is a fitting tribute to the British band that somehow seems to simultaneously remain unknown to the majority of the world’s rock listeners, while also standing as one of the most influential psychedelic bands of all time.

The TRIAD is unique, as it is an album of covers by three separate artists that essentially flows like an album. Each band — Harvestman (Steve Von Till of Neurosis’ psych guitar based project), Minsk, and U.S. Christmas — have approached these 11 iconic songs with respect, but each have also recognized the need for the songs to be reinterpreted in a new space and time. The result is a full-length psychedelic feast that not only captures the feel of Hawkwind’s individual songs, but also has the feel of their classic albums. Even the artwork by Boston artist Thomas Saraceno appropriately provides trippy surrealist scenes fitting to many albums from the ’70s. Most of all, the TRIAD was done out of pure veneration for a band than laid a solid foundation for every heavy, trippy, weirdo band that exists now — as well as for those who will freak out in the future.

U.S. Christmas – “Master Of The Universe”
Harvestman – “D Rider”
Minsk – “7×7”
Harvestman – “Down Through The Night”
Minsk – “Assault And Battery/The Golden Void”
U.S. Christmas – “Psychedelic Warlords”
Minsk – “Children Of The Sun”
U.S. Christmas – “Orgone Accumulator”
Harvestman – “The Watcher”
U.S. Christmas – “You Shouldn’t Do That”
Harvestman – “Magnu”

-Indica: New Digital Single “In Passing” Out Now!

Two tours with Nightwish, one platinum and two golds in Finland, numerous top-ten singles — for Indica it seems that the only way is up.

A modern, romantic mixture of Pop, Rock, exotic instruments, Finnish melancholy and mystic, nature-related lyrics make this band so unique.

The Finnish girl group was founded in 2001 by schoolmates Jonsu (vocals, violin, guitar, keyboards, theremin) and Heini (bass), who had played together in a children’s string orchestra. Their lineup was soon completed by Sirkku (keyboards, clarinet, piano), Jenny (guitar) and Laura (drums, percussion). Five beautiful girls with just one thing in common: as fully fledged musicians, they’re all light years away from casting shows and musical triviality.

Since the debut album which was platinum-certified, the band has released three more albums in Finland, two of which went gold, remaining in the charts for weeks. The last of the three, VALOISSA (2008), was produced by Nightwish boss Tuomas Holopainen who was also involved in mixing the band’s new album A WAY AWAY.

“In Passing,” the first single shows the big hit potential of this band with massive arrangements, a really strong chorus and Jonsu’s beautiful voice. She is also playing the violin in the song which makes it even more unique, touching and diverse. “In Passing” was co-produced by Roland Spremberg (H.I.M., A-ha, Livingston), mixed by Marc Schettler (Farin Urlaub, Silbermond, Sportfreunde Stiller) and mastered at the legendary Sterling Sound Studios in New York which have already been used by Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Scorpions.

-Bruce Moore Releases New Book “Metal Missionaries / The Assimilation Of Extreme Christian Metal Into The Main Stream Consciousness”

Heavy Metal has long been associated with dark, evil and nefarious themes. Throughout its history, Metal has also been linked with rebellion and the questioning of authority. While the stigma has by and large been accurate in the past, an underground movement has been gaining popularity over the last decade. Extreme Christian Musicians, they look and sound the same, but they are bringing a message of hope, faith, love and redemption to fans of the genre. There have long been fringe Christian Metal Bands with product available exclusively in Christian outlets and gift shops. For the first time Extreme Christian music has moved from the dusty back bins of the Christian Book Stores to the front racks at super retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target and Hot Topic. Everyday these bands are on the road traversing the country and taking their message and their brand of music to the masses hoping to make a difference. “Metal Missionaries” contains in-depth interviews with over twenty groundbreaking Extreme Christian Artists from around the globe, including, Becoming The Archetype, Corpus Christi, Grave Robber, Fearscape and many more.

Beginning April 1st 2010 “Metal Missionaries” will be available for digital download exclusively through undark.net. Log onto http://www.undark.net/ to order and download your own personal copy.

What People are saying about “Metal Missionaries”

“Bruce Moore has taken on the arduous task of communicating with extreme Christian bands from all over the globe to assemble a very concise and informative book. ‘Metal Missionaries’ dismantles some of the ignorance surrounding what is deemed ‘acceptable’ to God in modern music and shows that God is so much more creative than any of us could begin to fathom. I have no doubt that this book will bless any true metal fan. May God continue to bless you as well, Bruce!” -Wretched, Grave Robber

“Although volumes could be written containing testimonies from Christian bands and their fans, Bruce Moore has captured the spirit of the movement in this wonderful book. In it you will find his heart, as well as the hearts of many Christian metal musicians as they convey the feelings and experiences of so many that have been involved in this exciting movement for the past few decades.” -Pastor Bob Beeman, Sanctuary International

“It would be a gross denial to claim that ‘Metal Missionaries’ is anything but a solid journalistic foray into the burgeoning Christian Metal movement. To my knowledge, no other book on the market so honestly and expansively presents this generally unreported phenomenon. ‘Metal Missionaries’ is an enjoyable read, even for a blaspheming rabble-rouser of my notorious caliber. In Bruce Moore, ‘The Snake’ once again loses a fine propagandist.” -Dr. Ryan Bartek; author of “The Big Shiny Prison”

“‘Metal Missionaries’ is a smooth read and offers wonderful insight into a peculiar sect of metal, one which has experienced scrutiny and even contempt from both secular and religious communities alike. As a person immersed in the same music communities as Bruce, I still found myself learning many new things. This book is not only factual and informative, but also a fine example of why Bruce is such a pleasure to work with and know”. -Chris Gonda, founder of PureGrainAudio.

About Bruce Moore

Bruce Moore has been employed in the music business for over 18 years in various capacities. He has worked as a live sound engineer and as a recording engineer in some of the countries most prestigious recording studios such as The Hit Factory and Soundtrack NY. Bruce is a regular contributor to many national and international publications some of which include PureGrainAudio, The Gauntlet, Crave Magazine and Sick Drummer. Band: Mavalour
Record Label: Motor Pro Records
Genre: Classic Rock / R&B
Release Date: Out Now

Mavalour is a Classic Rock & Roll Band hailing from San Francisco, California. As is often the case, members of the best bands in the area gravitated together after seeing each other play at various venues and having a common thread in their styles.

The biggest challenge was getting two lead singers to see past their individual interests and figure out how to run the Band with just one. As both Tony Malson and Jaan Hjorth knew that their combined efforts could result in a richer musical production than if they had two seperate bands, it was decided Jaan would play Guitar, and Tony would be the lead Singer. With that challenge out of the way, they started the band Mavalour, the two of them collaborated to write the songs on this CD, ELECTION SMILE.

Working together with the best musicians they had met over the years in the Bay area of Northern California, they produced a Classic Rock album with solid Guitars, a driving rhythm section, and songs with that extra something that makes you want to listen again. Tony Malson started his Music career in Washington and was raised on the heavy “Seattle Sound.” Jaan Hjorth played in San Francisco and Hollywood and for many years lived and worked in London where he embraced an English Electric Blues style played through Marshall amplifiers. At one point his Band The Lorry Dogs actually had Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones as their Bass Player.

Bill felt the project had authentic credibility. He went on to cultivate the Lads and help them learn about music and the industry. The members of Mavalour are trying to embrace the rich history of Rock & Roll, and present a product that they feel represents a nod to the aesthetic and tonal senses of the past. They work to put a contemporary edge to the songwriting and production, and the combination seems to be working.

Currently playing shows around Northern California to good acclaim, they are now starting to promote their wares. They recently went down to Hollywood to play at the Vipeer Room on a Saturday night and the response was exceptional. They look forward to branching out on their traveling schedule and are currently contemplating a series of shows through the Pacific Nortwest.

They were recently seen at the infamous Bell Nine Studios in Piedmont California laying down some tracks that have an even stronger embracement of traditional Rock & Roll stylings. We hope to hear more from them soon.

The music is composed, performed, recorded and mixed by Alfred Mueller. As it is a one-man-project, the music is not planned to be played live. o the great prog bands of the ’70s like Yes, Genesis, Kansas, ELP, Saga, Rush, King Crimson, UK, Camel, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band

o Anyone’s Daughter, Eloy — prog metal bands like Dream Theater, Enchant, Symphony X, Royal Hunt

o new prog bands of the ’90s: Magellan, Cairo, Everon, Spock’s Beard, Glass Hammer, Ines

o electronic music of Tangerine Dream, Yanni, Chris Franke and Vangelis

o also, prog-related artists like: Rick Wakeman, Mike Oldfield, Alan Parsons Project, Karl Jenkins (of Soft Machine and Adiemus), Pierre Moerlen’s Gong, Steve Morse, David Arkenstone, Pat Metheny, Gandalf

Biography of Alfred:
Born in 1962. Taking organ lessons since the age of 12. First synthesizer when he was 17. At the age of 18 he had his first band Played in bands of different styles.

In 1992 he won the rock contest “Headliner” in Germany with his band Rachel’s Birthday. In 1996 Rachel’s Birthday’s CD AN INVITATION TO was released. 1999 – start of Soniq Theater.

“UNKNOWN REALITES is the stunning new album from Soniq Theater, which is basically based around the multi talented Alfred Mueller, who has played all the instruments and produced, recorded, mixed and mastered the whole affair. And what a job Alfred has done, I tell you what I wasn’t prepared for this CD, it’s a remarkable listen that more often than not is simply beautiful in construction and beautiful. The CD opens up with the instrumental ‘Longing For Freedom.’ The track reminds of A-Ha, high tech power pop mixed with progressive rock soundscapes. A superb opening track. ‘Revealing A Dream’ is another instrumental and reminds of guitarist Bernd Steidel’s work, only more progressive with hints of Vangelis. ‘Revolution Hymn’ has a more traditional progressive rock feel, a little more melodic and jazz based.

“Next is the quite beautiful ‘Cosmic Angel,’ it a gentle moody piece heavily laden in synths as are most of the album’s track, this one makes me think of Spock’s Beard as the track builds and is one of the highlights. Next up is ‘Black Mustang,’ a catchier driving song with a few sound effects mixed in with lots of synth, this comes over a little like Vince DiCola’s music from ‘Rocky IV.’ ‘Pavillon’ is breathtaking, an inspiring beautifully performed tune, lots of twists and turns along the way, a very nice theme style song, lovely melodies.

“The jazz funky beats are blended into the next track called ‘The Nitty Gritty,’ and then we get another highlight, the excellent ‘Call Of The Unknown.’ Here we find another track that is very diverse, sonic and hard to latch onto, very catchy. ‘Roll The Dice’ is basically a race of ’80s pop, think Human League without vocals, maybe even Erasure. Next is ‘Organic Food,’ this song shows Alfred delving back into traditional progressive rock and is a lovely track, a slight Genesis feel crossed with say Steve Howe. The closing track is called ‘Slipping Into The Future,’ this song ventures into new age territory mixed with prog leanings and perfectly ends an interesting and diverse album that is well worth exploring. Check Alfred out at http://www.soniqtheater.de/ .” – Nicky Baldrian

-16 Second Stare To Release Self-Titled Sophomore Album

“Bonnie And Clyde” To Hit The Active Rock Airwaves Soon!!

From Crüe Fest 2 2009 To Join Forces With Cold And Nonpoint On Tour 2010

16 SECOND STARE Out April 27th On Goomba Music

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Gaining ground in an industry that is tough as nails, the band that is sweeping the U.S.A. with their industrial metal is the Hot Ticket to see this year and out with Billboard charting band Cold. 16 Second Stare breaks new sonic ground with their new self-titled album releasing April 27 on Goomba Music.

With an aggressive sound, in the veins of Rob Zombie, NIN and Marilyn Manson, their new self-titled record, 16 SECOND STARE is ready to take their place in the vanguard of the international metal scene. Fueled by the ferocious vocals of Chris Davis, who stepped out from behind his drum kit to prowl the stage like a madman, and driven by the onslaught of guitarist Angry Tim Shanks, the band has been winning legions of fans with its uncompromising stage show. During the summer of 2009, on the road with Crüe Fest 2, 16 Second Stare showed what they were made of winning over huge crowds with their radical onslaught. Now they’re unleashing an equally radical album.

16 SECOND STARE took a year to make and, during that time, the band underwent a transformation. “I started singing lead and everything clicked into place,” says singer and drummer Chris Davis. “We used to think about radio play, but this time decided to go for the jugular. We’re going to get right up in your face and if people like it, that’s fine. If not, f*ck ’em. Anyone who’s seen us live knows we kick ass, so we decided to kick ass in the studio too. Making Chris the singer was the best move we ever made.”

Come out and hear the Hot Ticket of the year, 16 Second Stare on tour now with Cold and Nonpoint.

-Skyforger Post Second Song MySpace And Studio Report And Reveal Details About The Concept Of Their New Album KURBADS!

Latvian Pagan Metal Kings Skyforger are ready to release their latest masterpiece KURBADS upon mankind!

This will take a few more weeks though, but to give you another glimpse on the rich variety of this album the band has posted another new song on their MySpace. Click here to check out “In The Underworld”: http://www.myspace.com/skyforgerofficial

Skyforger have also posted a studio report including sound and loads of details on the recordings of KURBADS. Click here to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoevwrTaZzk

KURBADS offers the typical Skyforger fusion of various metal styles, like old school Thrash and Heavy Metal as well as Latvian Folk music, all rounded up with the trademark Skyforger sound!

The whole artwork was created by Skyforger’s guitarist Martins and is connected to the story of Kurbads. Kurbads is the name of a legendary hero from Latvian fairytales of old. He was born magically from the white mare, grew up very fast and was unimaginably strong!

Comments lead vocalist and guitarist Peter: “The tale of Kurbads is a collection of stories and legends recorded near the end of the 19th century by folk enthusiasts. Usually, they were short or medium in length and had many variations. The main theme found in all of them, however, is that of a man who fights against mythical evil forces and, by defeating them, becomes a hero. I think that the tale of Kurbads is interesting because it uncovers many things from Latvia’s past, not just historical facts of course, but aspects of daily life and people’s ways of thinking who lived in ancient times. Baltic cultural heritage is mostly unknown to Europe and even more so to the rest of the world. So we wanted to reveal some parts of it, and also show that, in Baltic literature, there are great legends and tales just as those about Cuchulainn, Nibelungs, Kalevala, King Arthur and the knights of the round table, and more!”

Skyforger’s new album KURBADS will be released as a limited 6-panel Digi-pak on the 23rd/ 26th of April 2010 via Metal Blade Records in Europe and on the 11th of May 2010 in the U.S.

-Online reports indicate last week’s press release on the Michael Schenker Group’s appearance at this year’s Sweden Rock Festival might’ve jumped the gun. It stated guitarist Michael Schenker would be joined by singer Gary Barden, guitarist/keyboardist Wayne Findlay, bassist Neil Murray, and drummer Simon Phillips, but Murray apparently stated online that nobody had actually asked him or Phillips to perform at that show. Stay tuned…

I came to Armored Saint the same way I came to Anthrax — John Bush. For me, he was the voice that drew me into both bands. He remains, in my opinion one of the most underrated voices in American music. Since I became aware of John via his new gig with Anthrax, that brought me into Armored Saint (thanks to my brother) at SYMBOL OF SALVATION. I moved forward with them through REVELATION and NOD TO THE OLD SCHOOL, reaching back over the years to give a listen to MARCH OF THE SAINT, DELIRIOUS NOMAD and RAISING FEAR. And then John’s voice was gone from the landscape. After being pushed to the sidelines for an Anthrax reunion tour after MUSIC OF MASS DESTRUCTION in 2005, there was no more music being recorded with John’s voice. Until now. Armored Saint has reunited to produce a 10-song disc for Metal Blade Records, titled LA RAZA. The title comes from a song on the disc that the band calls a cross between Santana and Mars Volta. The song “La Raza” comes from the band’s Latin roots (the Sandoval brothers and Joey Vera being of Latin descent) but is not indicative of the entire album. The first song, “Loose Cannon” lets you know this is an Armored Saint album. The voice is unmistakable, but those who only know John from Anthrax will notice a distinct, more melodic difference. In fact, with the exception of “Little Monkey,” there is very little here that would bring to mind Anthrax. “Head On” moves a little harder than “Loose Cannon,” but still fits comfortably in the Armored Saint catalog. “Left Hook From Right Field” brandishes a nice hook of a title and had my seven year old signing along as I listened. But as heartily as he went along with that song he sang along more enthusiastically with “Little Monkey” (could have just been a seven year old’s fascination with the word monkey — but he said that was his favorite). For as much as that track feels much harder than typical Saint tunes, “Bandit Country” sounded like it fell off SYMBOL OF SALVATION. Song after song I found myself getting happier to hear the music. I’ll be honest. I can’t trash any vehicle that brings back John Bush, but with that aside, I can find no reason to be disappointed with any track. This is one solid comeback and an album I highly recommend. Go give a listen to “Bandit Country,” “Black Feet” and “Little Monkey” to see for yourself. I want to give this an “A” just because it brings John Bush back to the party, but being more subjective I’d say it rates a rock solid “B.”

BUGGIRL – BLOOD, SWEAT & BEERS (B+) Impedance Music/MVD, 2009

This E.P. was an unusual offering for me — a “band” consisting of only two people! BugGiRL, otherwise known as the Spence siblings (Amber on guitar/vocals and her drum bashin’ brother Clinton, a.k.a. “Clinno”) have been making a racket on the pub-rock scene in their native Australia since the early ’00s and have racked up rave reviews for their raucous live shows wherever they go (the best one I saw on their Web site came from a critic who claimed they sounded like “AC/DC with the vocals of Tina Turner while being penetrated from behind”…BWAHAHAHAHA! After reading that, I was sold on ’em before I even heard a note!). Now it appears that the duo is hell-bent on making a name for themselves here in America too. BugGiRL are currently touring the U.S. to stoke the fires for their forthcoming full-length album, DIRT IN THE SKIRT (due this June) , and judging by the ammunition they’re packing on this brief but oh-so-tasty E.P., BugGiRL should have no problem finding an audience among fans of all things loud and sleazy, i.e. AC/DC, Airbourne, Nashville Pussy, Motorhead, or Betty Blowtorch. In short: this guy-n-gal ROCK! I’ll confess that at first, I thought listening to a duo would be an odd experience (especially since the only previous brother/sister combo I could think of was The Carpenters, who obviously weren’t even in the same musical universe…haha). I expected to wonder “where’s the bass player?” throughout the recording, but Amber and her brother fire off enough six-string pyrotechnics and drum abuse that I didn’t even notice the lack of other players. The five tunes on BLOOD, SWEAT & BEERS are a wall of sound and a sharp smack upside the head, topped by Amber’s versatile vocals, which can be either a bluesy croon (as heard on “Bad Blood”) or the pissed-off shriek of a metal goddess (see “Motor City Lover”). The E.P. was produced by Mark Ortiz, who has worked on such legendary Aussie classics as AC/DC’s POWERAGE and LET THERE BE ROCK and Rose Tattoo’s BLOOD BROTHERS, and he captures BugGiRL’s fiery, stripped down rock ‘n’ roll essence to a tee. In other words, BugGiRL hits with the force of a commando raid, and BLOOD, SWEAT & BEERS causes maximum hearing damage in its minimum running time (less than 20 minutes!). I look forward to getting my mitts on that full length as soon as it hits the racks.
