-W.A.S.P. Cancels Show

[Note: This is from HeadbangerNYC.com. – Tim]

W.A.S.P. mainman Blackie Lawless has released the following statement regarding the band’s last-minute cancellation of Thursday, March 11 concert at the Blender Theater at Gramercy in New York City:

“An unfortunate incident arose this evening at the Gramercy Theater in New York City that we need to let you know about. It prevented W.A.S.P. from performing this show, and caused us to disappoint many of our New York fans and friends.

“About 50 VIP tickets were sold to about 50 different fans for $50.00 apiece, twice the normal ticket price for this show. It turned out that part of that VIP ticket price included a meet-and-greet with W.A.S.P. These tickets were sold to these 50 or so fans without W.A.S.P. having any knowledge of this, let alone agreeing to this.

“Upon learning of this late in the afternoon of the show day, W.A.S.P. insisted that the promoter of this venue, who sold these VIP tickets to these fans, return the VIP portion of those tickets back to the fans. This meant that the promoter would have had to give each of those VIP ticket holders a refund of $25.00 of each ticket. W.A.S.P. demanded that this $25.00 be returned to each of these ticket holders in cash prior to the meet-and-greet, which W.A.S.P. was still going to do. The promoter refused. W.A.S.P. then informed the promoter unless these monies were refunded to these fans, in cash, that the band would not perform the show. Again, the promoter refused and W.A.S.P. canceled the show.

“We are saddened that it had to result in the cancellation of our performance for this evening, but we believe this unfortunate situation amounts to nothing more than our fans being ripped off.

“We have never charged a fan for an autograph and WILL NEVER charge any fans for an autograph.

“To all the fans that came to the show and were turned away, please accept our sincerest apologies. W.A.S.P. CANNOT and WILL NOT ever stand by and watch or be involved in their fans being ripped off… EVER.”

-Running “Door To Door,” FireHouse Teams Up With Universe Racing

BERWICK, PENNSYLVANIA — Like baseball and hotdogs, rock-n-roll and auto racing go hand in hand. Keeping that tradition alive, Universe Racing, an ARCA Racing Series Presented by RE/MAX and Menards race team is pleased to announce its alliance and marketing partnership with the multi-platinum recording band, FireHouse for both ARCA events at Pocono International Raceway this season. In conjunction with Tyler Jett Motorsports Marketing, the partnership has been agreed upon, with the possibility of the team running more than just the events at Pocono this year.

Consisting of band members CJ Snare, Bill Leverty, Michael Foster and Allen McKenzie, FireHouse has been a force on the hard rock music scene for over two decades. Most fans remember their rockin’ hits like “Don’t Treat Me Bad,” “Love Of A Lifetime,” “Live My Life For You” and “When I Look Into Your Eyes,” among others. After all of these years together, the band continues to tour, make new music and entice new fans while maintaining the same fan base they’ve had for years.

FireHouse are no strangers to auto racing. They have performed at numerous racing events including Bristol Motor Speedway and Iowa Speedway. Drummer, Michael Foster has always been an avid fan of auto racing. Front man and Pennsylvania native, CJ Snare, commented, “We are very proud to support Universe Racing. As a young man growing up in PA, we always heard about the Pocono Raceway and for FireHouse to play a small part in the races is an honor. We are all race fans but by far the biggest fan is our drummer, Michael Foster,” noted Snare.

Matter of fact, the band released “Door To Door” on their CD labeled PRIME TIME. The song is specifically written around racing. Along with many other FireHouse favorites, “Door To Door” is available for download at iTunes.

Owned by Bronx, New York businessman, Tony Aquilino, Universe Racing is entering its first season of competition with Hazleton’s Steve Fox at the controls. Fox has over 30 years under his belt in many forms of racing. He began racing motorcycles and snowmobiles and has since competed at many local short tracks in the Northeast. He also has a handful of ARCA Racing Series starts at Pocono International Raceway, where he is the General Manager for the Stock Car Racing Experience.

“This is great,” exclaimed Fox when asked about the newly formed alliance. He continued, “I’m thrilled to be working with FireHouse, one of my favorite bands. When FireHouse burst on the scene in the ’90s they really went right to the top. They have proved that they have staying power with how popular they still are today. I’m really looking forward to having a lot of fun with this and I hope they are as well. Looks like this season we’ll have to ‘Reach For The Sky.'”

FireHouse will be in the Pocono area the night prior to the Pennsylvania 125, which is slated for July 31. Along with Skid Row, FireHouse will be performing at Penn’s Peak, a popular club in nearby Jim Thorpe, PA.

With FireHouse Music on the hood of the FireHouse Music Dodge Charger for both Pocono races this season, and if agreed upon by the management at Penn’s Peak, Fox and others from the Universe Racing team may be on hand at the Jim Thorpe venue for concert-goers to check out the full bodied stock car and the great rock band that helps support their efforts in the ARCA Racing Series.

Both Fox and the entire Universe Racing team look forward to the summer events at Pocono and hope to obtain backing to run more races this season. Thanks to FireHouse, Universe Towing, Valve Tech Sales and G-Force Racing Products, they’re off to a great start.

Please visit http://www.universeracing.net/ for more information regarding Universe Racing and view the entire FireHouse schedule at http://www.firehousemusic.com/ .

About Metal Blade Records:

The noise began 28 years ago…

A music starved kid named Brian Slagel, killing time in suburban Los Angeles, gets sick of watching the local metal scene being ignored by the major labels. Working days at legendary metal emporium Oz Records and nights putting together one of the first metal fanzines, The New Heavy Metal Revue, Slagel asks some distributor friends if they’d be interested in circulating a compilation of unsigned bands if he put it together. The distributors said yes and Metal Blade Records was born. Of course it wasn’t quite that simple. Putting in long 17-hour days between Oz and Metal Blade, Slagel pieced together the bands that would grace the label’s first release — The New Heavy Metal Revue presents METAL MASSACRE. Metallica, Ratt and Black ‘N Blue were just a few of the willing locals. Except before METAL MASSACRE, Metallica didn’t exist.

So now for almost 30 years, Metal Blade Records has been setting the trend in heavy metal music without compromising its underground beginnings. Brian Slagel and Metal Blade Records have without a doubt had a major role in developing the American metal scene since day one and remains one of the most essential sources of metal music today. Since its beginnings in 1982, Metal Blade Records has unleashed some of the most influential and significant metal acts like Slayer, Metallica, Cannibal Corpse, GWAR, Six Feet Under, and King Diamond while developing acts like As I Lay Dying, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amon Amarth, Unearth, Behemoth, Job For A Cowboy, Whitechapel, Goatwhore, The Ocean, Soilent Green, Lazarus AD and 3 just to name a few. There are few who can argue that Metal Blade is one of the leading independent metal labels around! Constantly growing and expanding, Metal Blade has offices in Japan, Canada, and an office in the U.K. Not to mention the already significant Metal Blade Records Germany who’s been a strong and major force in the European scene for over a decade. By keeping a constant eye on the underground, adding some of the best bands out there to its roster, and sponsoring leading metal tours and festivals like the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival and New England Metal & Hardcore Festival, it is obvious that Metal Blade Records is here to stay!

-Casanova’s 20th Anniversary — Debut Reissue In April

Though Casanova may not have become a household name in the ’90s hard rock scene it wasn’t for a lack of great songs and drive to succeed. Their roots began in such classic and esteemed German hard rock/heavy metal bands such as Mad Max and Warlock. Formed in 1990 when Warlock super-producer, Henry Staroste, brought Michael Voss and Michael Eurich together to craft the debut album, CASANOVA, that took the hard rock world by storm. Well, the hard rock world outside of the U.S.A. that is.

Touring Europe in support of the album, which eventually sold 170,000 copies, only helped to establish and strengthen their rapidly increasing fanbase. A devout fan base that remains by their side, even now, 20 years later. CASANOVA has been out of print for years and was never actually released in the United States until now. With supplies diminishing over the years, the price of obtaining an original copy of CASANOVA has skyrocketed to prices exceeding the $100 mark. So with it being the band’s 20th anniversary we are extremely excited to present a new deluxe edition of the album which includes not only re-mastered audio, but seven (7) bonus tracks. This updated release of CASANOVA is the ultimate edition and more importantly a celebration of the classic hard rock sounds of Casanova!

W:O:A Top News

In the year 1980 the band Grave Digger was founded in Gladbeck. During that time no one could imagine how pioneering the band would be during their career for the metal scene.

30 years later, the band that never lost the bound to their fans, will play an exclusively and unique show at W:O:A 2010.

The main focus of the show will be on their most sucessfull album TUNES OF WAR from 1996, which appears in a trilogy with KNIGHTS OF THE CROSS and EXCALIBUR. The topic of the album is about the Scottish history and the battles between Celtic and English people in the 11th century untill the riot of the Jacobins during the 18th century. Not only it gave the band their first chart entry, but TUNES OF WAR also gave the band an honorary membership of the Scottish Cavanaugh-Clan.

For the very first time the entire album will be performed in its original way. To draw attention to the look of the stage there will be an elaborate stage concept and a special pyro show with a lot of famous guest appearances: The Baul Muluy Pipes & Drum band from Hamburg, but also the queen of metal Doro Pesch, Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian and the A Capella ensemble Van Canto will support Grave Digger with all their energy. That will make the gig into a remakable event.

It will be the first and the last time Grave Digger perform the album live in its entirety. The bonus to all of this will be hits like “Ballad Of A Hangman,” “Heavy Metal Breakdown” or “Excalibur.”

The writing relationship between Sean and I developed when Sean joined the band this past spring. When Sean got the job as the new guitar player for Nelly Furtado we made a pact between the two of us to finish the new CD before he had to take off on tour. We went right down to the wire last week, but in the end victory was ours and everything was finished by the time Sean got on the plane for Europe. Band: Sahara Steel
Album Title: Sahara Steel
Genre: Rock
Release Date: Out Now

Perris Records is proud to announce the re-release of this hidden gem from Mid Michigan. Perris Records recruited Anthony Focx (Ace Frehley, Buckcherry, Foreigner), (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Metallica mixes for XBOX games) to re-master the CD. This band in the mid ’90s opened for many hard rock classic bands such as Molly Hatchet, Foghat, Foreigner, Extreme, and Night Ranger to name a few. Guitarist Pat Sheppard’s style has been compared to George Lynch and vocalist Jack Klunder hits notes only monster vocalists for the BulletBoys and Steelheart can hit. Pat Sheppard also grew up next door to President and CEO of Rocknation, Tom Mathers. Mathers had this to say about this CD: “This band should have made it along with the many bands of their era, only to be crushed when GRUNGE hit with bands wearing flannel shirts, singing depressing lyrics, playing crappy guitar riffs and NOT able to play guitar solos, then you would get signed by the majors to drown out talented bands such as Sahara Steel. Crank this CD is your player and I guarantee it will rock your world.”

Track list:
1. Fatal Heartbreaker
2. Back In Trouble
3. Heart Of Fire
4. Open Fire
5. Booze, Tattoos, & Rock ‘N Roll

-Sweden Rock Festival Update

[Note: This is a combination of two separate updates. – Tim]

June 9-12, Solvesborg

Eight more bands confirmed to Sweden Rock 2010!

CINDERELLA (U.S.) – Only show in Scandinavia 2010!
In the ’80s, Philadelphia’s Cinderella was one of the most lauded and successful bands in glam oriented metal. Their debut NIGHT SONGS arrived in 1986 to become an instant mega-success. Main characteristics included Tom Keifer’s unmistakable vocals, highly impressive songs and unusually prominent blues influences. The latter became increasingly dominant on the succeding LONG COLD WINTER (1988) and HEARTBREAK STATION (1990). After the raunchier STILL CLIMBING (1994) Cinderella were forced to take an extended break, since their music no longer had any support from the music industry. Now the band finally make their serious comeback, with their classic lineup intact: Tom Keifer (vocals, guitar), Jeff LaBar (guitar), Eric Brittingham (bass) and Fred Coury (drums). So many of you have longed to see Cinderella at SRF — 2010 is the year when it happens. And it will be the band’s only Scandinavian appearance this year, as you may have guessed.

Finnish singer Michael Monroe (né Matti Fagerholm) is best known from Hanoi Rocks, one of the most influential bands in modern glam history. Their five records from 1981-84 have influenced bands like Poison and Guns N’ Roses. But Mike has also released several solo albums, including the classic NOT FAKIN’ IT (1989), and led acts like Jerusalem Slim and Demolition 23. In 2002-09 Mike once more fronted Hanoi Rocks, releasing three more fine rock albums. Now the singer is once more on his own, excepting of course his illustrious back-up musicians. Namely guitarists Ginger (The Wildhearts) and Todd Youth (Danzig), bassist Sami Yaffa (Hanoi Rocks, New York Dolls, Joan Jett) and drummer Jimmy Clark (Deborah Harry, Joan Jett). Top-notch musicians and three decades of stellar rock ‘n’ roll to boast — Michael Monroe is one of the genuine rock ‘n’ roll articles at this year’s SRF.

Grave Digger from Germany have made major contributions to heavy metal history not once, but twice. Once following their debut HEAVY METAL BREAKDOWN (1984), which put them at the frontline of the exploding German metal scene. And once more spearheading heavy metal’s triumphant return in the ’90s, with such albums as the famous “Middle Ages Trilogy” — TUNES OF WAR (1996), KNIGHTS OF THE CROSS (1998) and EXCALIBUR (1999). Grave Digger have continued creating fan-fave records in the 21st Century, like THE GRAVE DIGGER (2001) and last year’s BALLADS OF A HANGMAN (a new album is on its way). Now one of the world’s leading “true metal” bands make their highly anticipated comeback at SRF, as always with indefatigable singer Chris Boltendahl at the helm.

Sator was discovered by the Swedish public in 1988, thanks to their bizarre version of “Oh Mama” by female pop-duo Lili & Sussie. Their album debut SLAMMER arrived the same year, and STOCK ROCKER NUTS in 1990. These albums contained ballsy and punk-influenced rock ‘n’ roll and established Sator as a cult act in Sweden. The third record HEADQUAKE (1992) was actually a bona fide hard rock release. It was a great success that has since become a classic, but Sator still chose not to continue in that direction. Instead they returned to their roots, but the album releases became more scarce and the band itself all but invisible. In 2009, Sator was at the crossroads: quit, or give it all once more and show the youth of today where bands like Backyard Babies and the Hellacopters have their roots. They chose the latter, and will now return to SRF in 2010.

Robert Dahlqvist played guitar with the Hellacopters but also wanted a side project where he also handled lead vocals. The year was 2004, and the new band was named Thunder Express after a song by MC5. Under this name, the band released two albums filled with raw and rootsy rock music, influenced by the likes of the Rolling Stones, the Faces, Fleetwood Mac and of course the Hellacopters. However, their big national break came when they “translated” their name to Dundertåget (literally “Rumble Train”) and switched to Swedish lyrics. The first Dundertåget album SKAFFA NY FRISYR (“Get A New Haircut”) was one of the most talked-about records in Sweden in 2009. This April, the band will release their sophomore album. DOM FETA AREN AR FORBI (“The Fat Years Are Gone”). And in June, one of Sweden’s hottest bands at the moment makes their SRF debut.

F.K.Ü. (S)
Certain thrash lovers are sceptical towards FKÜ from Sweden. If a band takes a name that is the acronym of “Freddie Krueger’s Ünderwear,” dresses up as said “Nightmare On Elm Street”-antihero on stage, and writes lyrics exclusively as tributes to old horror movies and metal legends — is it even possible to take them seriously? Absolutely, since FKÜ are dead serious when it comes to songwriting. In fact, they’re probably one of the best bands of their kind at the moment. They have made three albums, and the most recent one, last year’s WHERE MOSHERS DWELL, is definitely the band’s biggest success so far. The music is solid old-school thrash, equally classy whether you find the lyrics amusing or not. The greatest moshpit alert of this year’s SRF?

Steelwing is Sweden’s newest stars in the new wave of traditional heavy metal, also featuring compatriot bands like Enforcer, Portrait, In Solitude and Helvetets Port. The band got signed by Nuclear Blast after winning a contest against more than 1,200 bands from around the globe. Now their debut LORD OF THE WASTELAND will arrive on April 30th. Some of you, primarily Swedes, may remember these talented true metal fighters as Scavenger or Hellevator, but now when they finally introduce themselves at the international metal scene it is under the Steelwing monicker.

On the release of the eponymous debut from Des Moines’ Stone Sour in 2002, many mistook the band for a new side-project by Slipknot-members Corey Taylor (vocals) and Jim Root (guitar). As it were, the duo had been in Stone Sour even before Slipknot, and when the latter took a break the two released an album by their “other” band. The sound was more melodic than Slipknot’s — it has been referred to as post-grunge — and many were surprised by how well Taylor mastered “normal” singing. Stone Sour released their second album COME WHAT(EVER) MAY in 2006, and started getting serious attention from audiences outside America as well. Currently, during another gap in Slipknot’s schedule, Stone Sour is working on their third album for a possible August release. But we don’t have to wait that long to see one of the currently most talked-about names of modern American metal at SRF.

-Forbidden: First Studio Report + Working Song Titles

After a thirteen-year hiatus, San Francisco’s Forbidden have returned to the studio to record their as-yet-untitled fifth studio album. Last week, drum tracks were recorded at Bombshelter Studios in downtown Los Angeles with owner Eric Kretz (drummer & founding member of Stone Temple Pilots). Forbidden are currently at Sonic Room Studios in Livermore, California tracking bass, guitar, and vocals.

Guitarist/songwriter Craig Locicero checks in about the band’s experience thus far:

“What a week it’s been. F*cking insane!

“February 28th – Mark [Hernandez], his tech Jeff (Trigger), Tim Narducci and myself left for L.A. and the Bomb Shelter. We packed 3 drum sets (all Sonor) and one guitar for me. It was one of my trusty Les Pauls, if you’re wondering — she’s is a rock! Had dinner in Japan town at what was referred to as the Denny’s of sushi — good and cheap!

“March 1st – I left early to go pick up the new Line 6/Bogner 100 watt HD. Everyone else starting pulling out the pieces of drums and hardware and matching whatever sounded best together. Mark switched out to one maple kick drum instead of two birch ones. It simply sounded amazing! He’s had the same kick since 1990 when he joined Vio-lence. We were a bit concerned about the one kick vs. two kick issue, but it sounded perfect. Eric Kretz came down and lent us a hand and showed us some mic techniques for the overheads… just enough to sound spectacular.

“March 2nd – We started tracking at 12 and we nailed the first song in a couple of hours. The next one was pretty easy as well. Tim was great working with Mark and getting him to try different things for the sake of the songs. His ear was money the entire session! On the third song, we hit a snag with the click we set up before we left the Bay. It was actually comical to watch Mark and I try to figure out what was wrong. Kretz showed up and was sitting behind me for a while without my knowledge. I turned around and we both laughed. Eventually we figured out the click issue.

“March 3rd – We started by taking the only showers of the week in the morning! ‘Scumbag metal dudes, we are!’ (Yoda style.) It was a very productive day after we cleaned up. We flew through 3 songs. Everything went perfectly. The groove was grooving… whatever the hell that means (???). It started to feel like a real record to me. Everything was coming together wonderfully.

“To be continued…”

Working titles on the new release are as follows:

Adapt Or Die

While we typically are not a band that seems to stop and look back, as we always seem to keep our eyes focused on the future. This milestone is one that very few bands can say they have achieved. The history of this band is a amazing story, for those of you who have shared your lives with 7th Heaven over the 25 years, you have seen some amazing good times and some sad bad times. It looks like our song “Better This Way” will be the lead-off track to radio this summer.

-Eternal Descent, ESP Launch Ltd Graphics Edition Guitar Contest

~ESP Guitars Web Exclusive: “Eternal Descent” Comic Book~

~Eternal Descent Lands Guitar World Spotlight~

LONDON, UK — Eternal Descent’s Llexi Leon officially formed a mutually beneficial strategic alliance with ESP Guitars in October, 2008 and since that time, the mastermind behind Eternal Descent has been on a whirlwind campaign. With the release of a CD, an E.P., a comic book via IDW, and a forthcoming CD in the works with producer Eddie Kramer, Leon, an Incendium Records recording artist and guitarist, has aligned with ESP Guitars to produce three original custom model guitars. These unique guitars, based on LTD’s EX, F, and EC models, have custom graphics of the main “Eternal Descent” comic book characters and feature color-coordinated DiMarzio pickups. Eternal Descent and ESP Guitars have teamed up for a contest — you win the contest, you pick the guitar! The contest winner can choose either the Lyra, Loki, or Syrian model guitar, all based on the “Eternal Descent” comic book characters. To enter, follow this link: http://www.eternaldescent.com/contest/index.php

In addition, ESP Guitars has launched an exclusive Eternal Descent web portal/section for the “Eternal Descent” comic book. Filled with info highlighting the comic book published by IDW with the first issue released on March 31st and 23 subsequent issues, this section will feature art, contests, news as well as anything else “Eternal Descent” comic book related. The comic book boasts the first ever to feature ESP endorsed guitarists from bands including God Forbid, Static X, Firewind, and Atreyu as characters in comic book issues. To visit this exclusive section on the ESP Guitars web site, follow this link: http://www.espguitars.com/eternaldescent.html

To support his expanding career, Eternal Descent/Llexi Leon are covered in the April 2010 issue of Guitar World where Leon talks about his concept for his music and comic book: “I love writing music that creates an atmosphere. Yet at the same time, I’m a big fan of epic films and comics that deal with the whole good-versus-evil theme. So I thought ‘why not combine the two?,’ and that’s how I came up with Eternal Descent.”

Llexi Leon began his own production company, Incendium Records, to release his first concept album LOSING FAITH and the E.P. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. This fulfilled Leon’s dream of having all Eternal Descent media developed with the highest standards under one roof. Leon recently began recording his third CD release with producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kiss) at the helm. He has also secured a publishing deal with IDW to release 24 issues of his comic book featuring artists Jason Metcalf, David Rivera, Javier Tartaglia and Joel Chua beginning March 31st.

-Solitude Reunion Show 2010

w/ Faith Or Fear & Thunderbrew

WHEN: APRIL 17, 2010
WHERE: JB McGuinnes – 519 E. Basin Rd, New Castle, DE 19720
(near the airport/10 mins. from Wilmington)

Delaware thrash/speed metal band, Solitude, was formed in 1983. Despite releasing three critically acclaimed demos true “break out success” always seemed to slip through their fingers. While influenced by Metallica and Testament they were also equally drawn to works by Rush, Mahavishnu Orchestra and even Eric Johnson.

In 1987, they released their first demo, FOCUS OF TERROR, which received an enthusiastic response from the scene thus resulting in the track “The End” appearing on THRASH ATTACK III. SICKNESS, released a year later, found the band quickly gaining ground with great reviews in fanzines worldwide most notably, Kerrang! As if all the positive press and opening for bands such as Death, Dark Angel and Sacred Reich, wasn’t enough to warrant the scene’s attention. “Typhoid Mary” was then chosen to appear on Metal Blade Records’ prestigious Metal Massacre series.

FALL OF CREATION brought greater exposure in publications like Metal Maniacs, Thrash ‘Em All and Metal Forces and they signed with Red Light Records in 1993 and recorded FROM WITHIN in 1994. Sadly enough, right before the album’s release the label went belly up and it never saw the light of day in the U.S. After a crushing blow like that and 10 years as a band Solitude decided to quietly bow out of the metal world.

POISONED POPULATION: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (1987-1994) is a two-disc re-mastered collection of all 26 tracks. It features all new artwork, extensive liner notes, full lyrics, enhanced live concert videos and much more.

-Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions Update

Band: HellCircles
Album Title: STILLNESS
Genre: Heavy/Prog Metal
Release Date: Out Now

HellCircles were born in November 2008 from the idea of the singer and keyboardist Marco Parisi and the guitarist Roberto Fornaroli, joined in a short time by Fabio Pedrali on guitar and Davide Ravara on drums, for a long time together in foregoing lineups. The aim is to create a style that merges the main influences of each one of the four members; the result is a mix of elaborate and kicking rhythmics and melodies, fast tempos and melodic yet aggressive vocals.

The lineup has been later completed by Danilo Arisi on bass and after few months, in May 2009, the band conceives the first work: STILLNESS, a five-track demo album, recorded at New Sin Studio in Loria (Treviso). They’re now working on the first full-length album, due to be released in 2010.

Band: Rayburn
Album Title: RAYBURN
Label: Psych Of The South
Genre: Rock/Progressive Rock
Release Date: Out Now

Rayburn was an amazing hard rock band from Little Rock, Arkansas that formed in 1970 and played in a moody and technical style with inventive songwriting.

Their unreleased recordings are must for fans of underground psych and prog sounds. They recorded for Mega Records, an RCA records subsidiary, and got signed to the label.

However their success was cut short when Steve Stephen’s father, who was co-owner of one of the biggest investment banks in the country, went to the label and bought Rayburn’s recording contract out from under them in order to derail his son’s music career. Over the next two years, the band recorded at Jaggars Studio in Little Rock and for Steve Cropper’s TMI studio in Memphis, but the band’s second chance at fame continued to elude them. In 1974, guitarist Jimmy Roberts’ life was cut short when he developed cancer at the age of 21.

Three years later in 1977, the band reunited to record more songs from their early ’70s era that they never got a chance to record with Roberts.

For the first time in over 30 years, Rayburn reunited for a live concert in their hometown of Little Rock, AR in July of 2009. With the help of the band member’s musical children, the 2009 version of Rayburn was a tribute and reboot of the original group with the meeting of two generations to celebrate the music of the past. At the concert, their reel-to-reel demos from 1972-1977 were released on CD, featuring a full-color 12-page book compiled and researched by Harold Ott.

This was a supremely talented group that was gone too fast and held back from the world. With this release, Psych Of The South attempts to correct that injustice with a CD of 14 of Rayburn’s original compositions heard here for the first time.

Track list:
1. Your Mind (Doubt)
2. Got To Get Ready To Die
3. Steam Shuffle
4. Said, I Love Only You
5. Righteous Man
6. Songbird
7. See My Eyes
8. The Trail Is Gone
9. Your Mind (Doubt)
10. America
11. Saltless Tears
12. Hey Friend

-Haken Debut To See Release Via Sensory

Haken are arguably the most exciting sound to emerge from the modern progressive movement.

Formed in 2007, Haken is a virtuosic progressive rock/metal band from London, England, comprising some of the country’s finest young musicians. Featured in the band are members of To-mera and Linearsphere. In July 2007, Haken showcased their music for the very first time to a packed out London bar with a great response, followed the next week by a sold out show at The Peel in Kingston. Within months of this double-debut performance, the band were billed in support of Riverside at Camden’s prestigious Underworld. Haken continued performing sets to packed houses throughout London and on U.K. tours in support of cult metal bands King’s X, Bigelf, and To-Mera and continue to extend their fan base. One of the band’s demo tracks was featured on the cover CD for the second issue of Classic Rock Presents Prog magazine in 2009.

The band melds metal with progressive rock, drawing influences from contemporary bands like Dream Theater and IQ as well as “old school” icons Genesis and Queen. AQUARIUS is their debut release — a 72-minute, larger-than-life conceptual sci-fi/fantasy work filled with bombastic keyboard flourishes, stunning vocals, and lethal guitar work. The album was recorded in The Netherlands at Spacelab Studios (Delain, Everon, Wolverine) and mastered in Germany at Eroc’s Mastering Ranch. Graphics has been created by Dennis Sibeijn at Damn Engine to tie in with the AQUARIUS story.

Check out an extended preview of the album here:

In their brief existence, Haken are already highly respected within the British metal community, and their unique and imaginative genre-bending approach to music has garnered praise from all corners of the globe.

AQUARIUS will be released on March 29th, 2010.

-Methusalem Announces New CD UNITE AND CONQUER!

The Dutch Heavy Metal band Methusalem has set the release-date for their upcoming album UNITE AND CONQUER at March 26, 2010. This self-financed album will be distributed by Rock Inc.

When the band decided that it was time for a new, full-length album, they threw overboard all biases about how heavy metal should sound and listened very carefully to what producer Arno Krabman from Graveland Studios had to say about their current style. The result is an album that features a bunch of songs that are all miles apart, some more traditional, some more modern, yet all fitting perfectly into Methusalem’s philosophy. That philosophy is still to rock the world with hard rock and heavy metal, but in stead of living in the past, they’ve now made an album that remembers the past.

The album was mastered by an international mastering professional, Darius van Helfteren, who had also previously worked with Judas Priest and the Scorpions. He gave the album that last edge that it needed to sound truly great. Finnish graphic designer Jan Yrlund was asked to create the artwork and succeeded in capturing the overall lyrical theme of the album in the cover artwork.

Methusalem has uploaded an album preview and a video teaser at their MySpace:

To celebrate the release of UNITE AND CONQUER, the band will party online with their fans during a four-hour online MySpace Release Party, where the new album will be for streaming for four hours at March 25 from 19:00 till 23:00 CET.

Who wants to celebrate this release live with the band, can visit the Official Live Release Party at April 1 at the Gloppe in Leeuwarden (NL).

-16 Second Stare Join Forces With Cold And Nonpoint On Tour

In Support Of Self-Titled Debut Album Out April 27th

“Bonnie And Clyde” — First Single To Hit The Airwaves

HOLLYWOOD, CA — LOUDER, HARDER, and HEAVIER than their debut, 16 Second Stare breaks new sonic ground with their new self-titled album releasing April 27 on Goomba Music.

With the aggressive sound of their new self-titled record, 16 Second Stare is ready to take their place in the vanguard of the international metal scene. Fueled by the ferocious vocals of Chris Davis, who stepped out from behind his drum kit to prowl the stage like a madman, and driven by the onslaught of guitarist Angry Tim Shanks, the band has been winning legions of fans with its uncompromising stage show. During the summer of 2009, on the road with Crüefest 2, 16 Second Stare showed what they were made of winning over huge crowds with their radical onslaught. Now they’re unleashing an equally radical album.

16 SECOND STARE took a year to make and, during that time, the band underwent a transformation. “I started singing lead and everything clicked into place,” says singer and drummer Chris Davis. “We used to think about radio play, but this time decided to go for the jugular. We’re going to get right up in your face and if people like it, that’s fine. If not, f*ck ’em. Anyone who’s seen us live knows we kick ass, so we decided to kick ass in the studio too. Making Chris the singer was the best move we ever made.”

Standout tracks on 16 SECOND STARE include the current single, “Bonnie And Clyde,” a heavy stomping rocker, with the grinding guitars of Shanks complimenting the processed vocals Davis lays down over his own brutal backbeat. The shrieking harmonies of Davis and Shanks add another sinister element to the mix. “Bonnie And Clyde” is already being played on Sirius Satellite’s Octane channel, AOL’s Extreme Alt Rock station, and is climbing the Media Base Active Rock chart.

Come out and hear the Hot Ticket of the year, 16 Second Stare on tour now with Cold and Nonpoint. The trek will begin on February 17, 2010 at Juanitas in Little Rock, Arkansas.

BRIAN HOWE – CIRCUS BAR (B+/B) Frontiers, 2010
14 tracks, RT: 51:14
You may remember Brian Howe from his stints with Ted Nugent and Bad Company, but since his departure from Bad Company in 1994 he has embarked on a solo career and released two albums, the latest being the curiously titled CIRCUS BAR. Brian’s vocals are in fine form here, delivering some gorgeous AOR gems cut from the cloth of Rick Springfield, Bryan Adams and John Waite with some modern pop flavors thrown in to keep things fresh. Fans of early ’80s MTV ready anthems will get the most from CIRCUS BAR, Brian clearly having a good time on tracks such as the instantly hummable “I’m Back,” uplifting “Life’s Mystery,” infectious rocker “There’s This Girl,” reggae-splashed “Could Have Been You” and a quiet remake of Bad Company’s “Holy Water.” Brian had some help from several well-known names in the business, Pat Travers lending a hand on “My Town” and the Little River Band’s Wayne Nelson partially handling bass duties, with Brooks Paschal providing the suitably crisp production. Some relatively standard sounding tracks bring the score down a bit for me, but overall CIRCUS BAR is a pleasant break from the hard rock and metal I can usually be found listening to. A nicely crafted slice of good time AOR…
